I Noticed That I’ve Become A BL Game Protagonist’s Younger Brother!

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

I remembered. In my previous life, I was referred to as a fujoshi. And that this world is a BL game I have played back then. Not to mention.. my big brother is actually the protagonist! What kind of blessed life is this?!

However, it’s a pity that my brother is already in a secret relationship with his childhood friend. When all is said and done, I can only watch as the game’s main story timeline came to an end. Isn’t this basically the God amusing oneself by messing with this poor soul?! Really?? God?? When I can finally witness a real life BL, why must my joy be tempered with?! God! Ain’t this a bit too cruel of a treat!

Well, it’s alright I guess. In fact, to be able to experience this is already totally amazing. And the delicious treat is already served! Therefore, I will feed myself by observing the capture targets that was not tied to my brother!

… And that would be the first blunder I made. How could I forget… the fact that I looked so much like my brother–!

Hi! This is my first ever review here in NU. Usually I just lurk around but because of the ending of this novel, I was stimulated to write a review. First of all, I agree with what reviewers like 'blkdragon, dogbloods***, and laztswaeg' stated in their review. To be honest, some of the actions of MC are problematic to me but I just let it fly over because I am used to this type of novel. What I have a problem with is the main ending of the story.

Spoiler

Hina, the childhood friend, is the one he ends up with in the main story. I mean, WTF! There was really no indication that that would happen in the story. And that is the reason I am also wondering what the sexuality of the MC is. Blkdragon already sums it up in their review. Again, just like what dogbloods*** stated in their review, this is clearly queerbaiting.

I actually preferred that he had no one to end up with in the main story because the alternative endings would elaborate on the different ships. But no, it was the childhood friend trope that won.

I like the alternative ending for Kaede and Natsuhi. Regarding the Natsuhi ending, I was thinking that President x MC would also be nice as well. Even Hina got the main ending and they don't have that many scenes, why not president?! Huhu...

I haven't read the last alternative ending but even that is better than what the main ending showed since Shirousa has better character writing than Hina. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I am just frustrated with what the author did.

Anyways, thank you for listening to my Tedtalk. If you want to continue reading this novel, please don't be deceived by the cover. Tbh, you really don't lose much not reading this novel. You can just erase this on your 'to read' list. The reason why I gave it 3 stars is for the translator as well as the alternative endings. Thank you. Bye~ <<less

So I bear it and read all the chapters. In the first, it really a cringy one. Seriously, his inner mind make all the fun gone. But I kinda like it in the end

Spoiler

From the time his big bro misunderstanding, I thought it got better. Akira still dense and denying all the possibilities tho. And he even told his secret carelessly (that he reincarnated and was a girl--fujoshi), but it is better than before

(Currently on the New Year 2024 short story. Unsure of which story the translator is on.)

The writing itself is a 3, at least for the main story. The love and fun I get out of it is a 5. I read the original (non-translated) stories & the additional short stories on the author's social media.

What follows is a very biased, incredibly messy, and spoiler-filled flood of thoughts.

Starting off with two clarifications & a reminder:

    • The webnovel itself is properly tagged as "NL" (M/F) & BL, and the manga is tagged as BL. I've seen people consider this as queerbait; that's understandable, but please know that the descriptions on the official websites accurately reflect the content of the story. It just seems that the translator hasn't included those notes (possibly they weren't there at the time it was translated?). The light novel doesn't have a genre. The first volume is a cliffhanger and is more similar to the manga than the webnovel, but I found out recently there is a second volume coming out March 2024.
    • Akira identifies as male. He explicitly states that his "sense of self is stronger as Amachi Akira", which happens to include the fact he's thought himself as male his whole life. I think you can debate what a soul consists of, but it makes sense to me that gender identity wouldn't necessarily carry over to each life... the human experience is extremely varied, after all. Also, Akira refers to himself as having a "fujoshi soul" and not as a fudanshi in part because he wants to be "normal" (you can debate that notion if you want - the novel reflects some norms I don't believe aligns with modern [+Western] ideals, which I do occasionally cringe at. I'm not sure if this case is an example of that, though, not necessarily - to me, it's Akira reflecting the society he grew up in. Whether or not the author intended that is a different story.
      Spoiler

I do like that Akira is unexpectedly down-to-earth about considering the confessions he receives from Kaede and Natsuhi despite all that, though, and also educates Natsuhi that queer couples do live the same lives as every other couple - and I think that somehow adds to the charm, that this is a fun story that speaks to those who like BL ((consider how funny the one side character, usually a fujoshi, who ships the main couple is in plenty of other stories)), which yes, includes listening in on his brother f*ck LMAO

but Akira is genuinely a good person who tries to be considerate of people's feelings. IDK. It's a comedy, basically. I can't explain this actually, I'm not an articulate person.

    • It's fine to have squicks about the dubious routes,
      Spoiler

      like Makoto's, or maybe Hiiragi's -

      [collapse]
I just want to remind that the contents are fictional and are also not meant to be a meaningful message. But I understand that it's debatable.
Random thoughts:

    • I love Akira's internal dialogue (hilarious, but compassionate at key moments), and in general one of the highlights of this writing is the character voices. (Shirousa-san's & Natsuhi's inner monologues are, how to say... the writing is simple, but their conflicts are still conveyed at the proper depth to me.)
    • The main story itself, while fun, lacks a lot of development for most characters. Since I am a character-focused person, this was initially a let-down, although I had plenty of happiness reading this for other reasons (character interactions, voice, general premise, etc). The various short stories do make up for it for most characters.
    • I found recently from going through the author's social media that the characters likely have a lot more to them than what has been written (this is also hinted at in short stories after the main story), and the author just wanted to keep it light-hearted. I kinda wish that it had more depth, but simultaneously am pretty grateful as to how easy and fun it was to read as it is - so again, some of the "quality" is actually dependent on what type of story you wanted vs expected.
    • The formatting has some people mentioning that you might as well play a dating sim
      Spoiler

(e.g., Miyuki doesn't show up often in the main story because in the game, he's a hidden route)

      [collapse]
; that's a valid opinion, I also just happen to believe novels don't have to be strictly one type of story.
    • Hats off to the translator, they clearly hated the first ending but they're still going. For the most part, I think their translations are accurate. Some of the chapters of the versions they used might be outdated (like ch20), as the webnovel does occasionally go through edits. The translator isn't always clear on the subject of who is talking -
      Spoiler

the biggest one that stood out to me was in Natsuhi's ending, where President mentions it was President and Akira who hung out together, causing Natsuhi to start researching places to go with Akira (so, not Natsuhi and Akira who hung out together previously)

      [collapse]
      .
I'm not a person with a big brain, and I don't want to go into too many spoilery details about each route, so I ran out of thoughts for now. If you somehow read all of this, the takeaway is hopefully that I, as an individual, have a lot of fun reading this. I think others' criticisms are fair, although part of me wishes the novel could be taken a little more lightheartedly in certain complaints. I hope the translator does all of the short stories even after the routes of they're up for it, maybe even the shorter stories on the author's social media - they're very cute character interactions, and I love them.

I feel like typing still, so here's a random & incoherent stream of thoughts about my favorite capture target.

Spoiler
    • Natsuhi-senpai... good. I honestly like that he's homophobic as a result of putting his brother on a pedestal LOLLLL. There's a lot to unpack there when you find out how attached he was to his brother when he was younger (mentioned in President's route + on SNS)
    • My enjoyment of him didn't hit me until I was reading more and more of the short stories, as he was very quiet throughout the main story - but man, he really looks after Akira. (When I read the manga after the webnovel, though... wow, chapter 14. You can really tell how well Natsuhi understands Akira ((and how touched he is that Akira cared about him))). I wish his POV in one of the first short stories was included in his ending, since it follows what he was thinking after his brother took Akira to the aquarium.
    • THE INFERIORITY COMPLEX MIXED WITH IDOLIZATION IS SO!!! THE WAY HE LEARNED TO TAKE WHAT HE WANTS AFTER BEING PASSIVE IN HIS BROTHER'S SHADOW FOR SO LONG IS ALSO SO...!!!!!! The fact that it mirrors/complements Akira's feelings about his own brother is also so..!!
    • I will stop here. My brain is nonexistent.
    • Shoutout to Natsuki while I'm at it. Strong character, love him being secretly lonely. I wish I felt more justification as to why he likes Akira in his route.
    • Shoutout to Kaede while I'm at it LOL. Also a nicely crafted character. I would've loved to see a little more about why exactly he falls for Akira after Makoto, similar to Natsuki.
    • Maybe the only legit review-like thought I'm gonna write out, I liked Shirousa and while I appreciated her unique struggle within the fictional situation she was in, I think this route is also the most telling where the author is trying to mix in modern & traditional values in a strange way, especially since Akira doesn't actually care about what Shirousa looks like, but bothers her about it for Miyuki's (and apparently, secretly, Shirousa's) sake.

The premise of having a Fujioshi reincarnating into a BL MC is unique and pretty enjoyable to read overall.

Though it is rather annoying that MC was so weak-willed that even the uke could bully him.

Spoiler

But what’s most annoying is that the whole plot seemed to setup for a BL ending and the main ending is with the annoying childhood friend?? I get that MC doesn’t have many memories of her past life so she identifies more as a he but MC clearly has 0 romantic experiences and is just het because society. And MC chose the female childhood friend in the end because of 1. A dream and 2. She’s the only female love interest. That’s so disappointing and a complete waste of the prior 19 chapter.

"Although my gender became "male", I am not gay. I've never been in love, I'm not interested yet, but probably the target is a girl. I still do not understand well, but I think it's only natural to go for a girl since I'm a boy now. Because to me, boys love is limited to enjoy 'seeing it' rather than 'becoming one'. Because I can't fangirl over myself!"

There is no way I agree with this^ If this was me, I wouldn't say I'd go looking for a guy to... more>> date but if I like them then who cares, love is love, but this seems like shehe has narrowed who they would go for just because they are currently male and that just doesn't sit right with me.

Plus, what's with that "because I can't fangirl over myself" line? Isn't that what "normal" (being sarcastic) couples do? If not, I need to have a sit-down conversation with everyone I know in a relationship.

*UPDATE*

I got to chapter 8, I read spoilers before, so I know who he picks (according to comments anyway [the female childhood friend right?]) and I gotta say: Same! God what are these choices!? If she wasn't an option, then I'd pick the older yandere janitor. I had high hopes for the red head but damn, what a let down. If I had to deal with him I would change schools... maybe even countries and turn off all social media💢 <<less

Total let down. The story is nice, classic japanese BL style.

The fujoshi girl is tiring, Hina is tiring, Kaede is surprisingly carnivorous. My favorite was the tsun bro con but by the time I read the first ending I didn’t have the will to read his alternative.

I really don’t like novels with multiple alternative endings, I always think it gives the idea that the author just didn’t have the guys to stick with his first decision.

Anyway, I shouldn’t have become invested in this as I did.

I mean, it's okay. Nothing super special but not bad either? Just kinda dull because it's so predictable yet shoujo-absurd at the same time.

Btw it's tagged yaoi but not even a kiss has happened to the MC and I doubt anything like that would happen to him in the foreseeable future anyway.

This is a very light-hearted and easy-to-read BL novel so far.

Originally, the main character was a girl in his previous life, but he has no recollection of it whatsoever other than that he was a fujoshi (a ka obsessed yaoi fangirl) and played a game in which he's currently residing. His brother happens to be the protagonist of the game, but he already picked the childhood friend-route and the MC ends up "comforting" the other targets in one way or another. In short, they turn their obsession to someone else,... more>> whom happens to be very dense.

The focus isn't so much on the past life BL game, as it is on the MC being completely oblivious to every single seduction-attempt on him that's ever made. You have to have a certain patience for these characters, if you do I can indeed recommend it as a good and fun way to spend your time. <<less

There are only three chapters so far, so I can't say much, but it's promising!

What I respect is that the first love interest we see, Kaede, actually got rejected by the big brother first before starting to fall for the little brother, our MC. It's a change from what we usually see, where the ML immediately falls for the MC without any previous serious love interests.

The only negative is that the second translator, Foxaholic, tends to forget to add punctuation to dialogue, which hurts my inner perfectionist. For me to... more>> give this 5 stars, the translator would need to get a beta-reader. <<less

Honestly the beginning is great and a bit refreshing. I don't really mind the MC is a girl in man body or there's a guy in girl body. I don't really mind either when the novel end up without dating any guys. What annoys me is how the novel can't shut up about BL this and BL that. I know its about a Fujoshi (a girl that love BL? From my understanding) but please can you tune it down a little and how the MC seems indecisive with everything. I... more>> personally thought MC is not obvious but he's a greedy person. Tsk.

I give it 2 star for MC brother and the translator. <<less

So this novel..... I wouldn't call it horrible, in fact it's quite entertaining if you turn off brain cell function and ignore the fact that every single character can be horribly frustrating.

We got creepy 25 y/o that harrasses a first year highschooler. (Hiiragi)

A cute guy who gets a bit too pushy sometimes (ugh) (Kaede)

... more>> A guy with an ugly haircut who realizes his feelings too late and has way too little screentime (Natsuhi)

The president who's quite funny but he's not really a love rival sadly (Natsu (k?) i). He has an alternative story though despite not confessing (from what I remember)

A girl (boy inside) who gets shamed for having muscles and told it makes her less beautiful (ughhhh) And she's also homophobic, or well, in regards to her brother anyway (Shirousa)

Her little brother who barely exists bc he has such few scenes and he's not a love target in the novel despite being in the OG game (....?)

Hina, the childhood friend who IMO gets too much hate but she can be goddamn annoying but NOT the worst of them and I think if she was a boy ppl wouldnt hate her as much

Not a love rival but the weird 'fujoshi' girl who gets on everyones last nerve and shouldve just disappeared for being a huge creep

The brother who has his moment of being a horrible person yet everyone forgave him (makoto)

His boyfriend who um exists ig? Like him tho

And finally the MC who says WEIRD things abt his brothers relationship and listens to them doing IT (wtf??) And is also so dense you could cut through it. He's not as bad as the fujoshi girl but he needs serious redeeming to be considered normal....

And can we PLEASE talk about the term BL???? "You are BL" You are boys love??? What??? I doubt it's a translation mistake but it sounds absolutely ridiculous. Also the constant throwing around of the words seme and uke makes me so uncomfortable

And finally the ENDING

Spoiler

So yeah idrc that he ended up with the girl. There were many hints and he literally said from the beginning he wanted a girlfriend. Plus Hina is way better than homophobic girl, fujoshi girl, creepy old janitor so yeah. The ending is so abrupt tho we dont even see MC rejecting them nor telling them he's in a relationship, plus he literally calls Hina bad things in his mind and seems to hate her the entire time and all of a sudden youre in love??? And after they start dating he thinks she looks disgusting after crying like HUH is that love????

Such a great premise and yet this will being going into my "tr*sh Bin of Disappointment" where novels come to lie when they highly disappoint me. I'm honestly happy that I happened to take a look at the reviews after returning to continue from where I left off. The rage in my heart if I had continued to read and be oblivious to the ending that awaited me, would've been enough to make me have a stroke.

I can't believe that a story with this much potential would end up with... more>> a het pairing that has no kind of chemistry whatsoever. I just cannot. I came for BL, not whatever this is. They might as well add in Q Baiting as a tag, and click bait in the tags, because this is just faulty.

Anyone who had hope based on the premise, save yourself the trouble and just skip this. The only thing that saves this novel is the translation, which had been great up until this point. I'm just sorry that the translator had to waste their time and efforts on a bad story like this. <<less
