【Hero Alistar, a legendary hero who has saved many people with the Holy Sword ■■■■■■. There was a person who was always with him, Saint Magali. The two of them, with a bottomless kindness and benevolent spirit, no matter what danger befalls them, they saved many people that suffered hardships and injustice. This book describes the history of the legend of the greatest Hero and Saint of all time.】

Excerpt from the preface of 『Holy Sword Legend』.

My childhood friend, Magali was chosen as a saint.

From now on, it seems that she has to keep smiling to everyone in the capital, and has to live in a terrifyingly strict world that has things like manners and dance.

We’ve been together since birth. As expected, there is something left in my mind.

While feeling a little lonely… I held down my childhood friend who no matter what was trying to escape and turned her over to the knight who came to pick her up.

「Alistaaaaaaaaaaaaar!!」

I could hear a resentful voice, but that was probably my imagination.

I was taken along to the capital to see her off as a last struggle… but, it ended without any problems.

「Now, I’m going home. Good luck ^^」

I turned my back to my childhood friend who looked at me with resentful eyes. And when I was on my way home… I was being chased by goblins.

「Noooooooo!! Someone help meeeeeeeeeee!!」

This is a misunderstood legend of a hero and saint with the worst personalities that’re pulling each other’s leg while pursuing a happy life.

It's pretty early still but it's an ok read. It's mostly just an adventure comedy about the two scummy people desperately trying to get rid of each other or drag the other into their misery. Pretty outsides, rotten insides, both are forced into "selfless" arch-type roles and you basically just revel in how their actions don't match their true feelings.

Overall it's ok, it's enjoyable to finally see the Hero being all "why tf do I gotta do this?? I just wanna mind my own sh*t and go home." And I... more>> like how both saint and hero are selfish and terrible people. The sword and Hero's banter is hilarious at times but I do dislike the fact that the sword can force the MC's body or give MC painful headaches to do their will. I would have preferred if they were more equal or if in their downtime, MC's misusing the sword/punishing it for it forcing it's will on him (ex: threaten to dull the blade or stick it in a pile of manure). While it's understandable that you need the sword to force the hero to move so that we actually have a plot, it's forceful and traditional "we must help!" mindset makes it a pain to read due to the one sided power dynamic. <<less

It is a shame, the non-verbal exchanges are very good but that cursed sword is so ruin the character. While the story will end too quickly otherwise since the MC is pretty clever, that sword basically takeover his body most of the time to play "justice" and its sense of "justice" is so childish and meddlesome I wonder why it hasn't just lockdown MC's conciousness and takeover his body completely already.

I tried to read on hoping it would improve and it did improve a bit with his childhood friend involvement,... more>> it is still terrible. <<less

This forced me to write a review... the story arcs are the same as you would find in a typical 'Yuusha' novel but the MCs interior monologues make it extremely enjoyable. Probably the most self-centered and tr*shy character who doesn't have a spine ... more>>
Spoiler

(in a good way tho, he won't just throw himself into danger for 'Yuusha' reasons or let emotions make decisions for him, however, a Holy Sword will ruin that for him)

whose only redeemable traits are his exceptional acting skills and discerning eyes. And I like how he just doesn't start behaving like a completely different person upon suddenly gaining power.

His childhood friend's monologue just got started from chapter 26, I think it will be equally enjoyable... can't wait for them to start their 'legendary tale' together.

On a side note, the translation is a bit off during the initial chapters but gets better later on. <<less

I would have rated it 4+ stars if not for the holy sword's personality really....

I'm sure that other reviews have talked about it already but I really can't stand its existence thou I have managed to read until chapter 70 (75 now but so far everything is the same). Now lets talk about what makes it good and terrible!

Character-wise it is great! Not so original for the side characters but that is normal, I can even say that they have more character in them compared to general isekai protags but... more>> that isn't a big claim to make lol. The main characters are obviously the main seller of the series. If you have ever read Death march and thought that he was too bland or arifureta and thought he was done badly as an edgy character then this one can be claimed as just right! And the best part? There are two of them. Not copied pasta, they are different enough to separate but similar enough to laugh as they struggle on similar issues.

Story!

So simply put the main character, Alistar, is focused on one thing and one thing only. A pampered life. he tries this by acting like a good guy and trying to find a rich gullible girl. The problem is someone has the same idea! A female childhood friend named Magali, since they know each others nature they try to remove the other party both so that they are secure, and because they find the other annoying for many reasons.

What made it Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?

Now that I said some of the major good points in the story I'll talk about the biggest detractor. The holy sword. Or rather as Alistar calls it the Cursed Sword.

One of the major plot movers in the story is actually the Sword trying to act through Alistar, his wielder. The only problem is that they have incompatible personalities and while that would set up some good bantering in a different novel in this one the Sword just gives him headaches at best and controls his body
Spoiler

or uses his lifespan

[collapse]
at worst. Literally any argument no matter how logical it is on Alistar's side is ignored by the Sword who more and more appears to be the classic hero idealist kind. What kind is that? The kind that rushes out in the middle of the night. As a weakling. With no training. Now I would be less angry if not for the fact that it is Alistar's body that he is forcing to act and not his own but there we have it. The biggest villain in the story really is The Holy/Cursed Sword who threatens MC to act out his heroic ideals. <<less

This is a fantasy and not an isekai. The premise is fresh and funny about how two childhood friends both hiding their own true tr*shy personalties have to take up their respective roles. Tbh tr*shy MCs make the story a lot of fun because of how what they say and what they are actually screaming internally contrasts.

I'm only on c4 now but I took a peek at the raws and this looks extremely funny comedy action fantasy novel.I hope they don't mess it up

This story had a lot of potential. The start and end (if you can make it to there!) is quite good and would easily be a 4+/5. Unfortunately any positives are decimated by the Sword.

The problem is that author decided it would be a good idea for the MC to find a Holy/Cursed Sword that controls the MC's actions turning the MC into nothing less than a puppet. While it isn't a bad idea in principle the problem is that for around 80% of the novel the MC's actions are... more>> dictated by the Sword and it gets old very fast.

The problem with this setup is you have literally zero character growth for the MC since all his actions are controlled and even if you did have character growth it would be irrelevant as MC wouldn't be able to do anything anyway. If it was for 5-10 chapters max then it would be a nice idea. Unfortunately you will find that literally 100+ chapters of a 155 chapter novel consist of the MC not wanting to do something and then the Holy/Cursed Sword takes control of the MC's body and makes him do it while ignoring the MC's will. If it happens once or twice it's original. When it happens 30+ times it's tortuous to read as it feels like author has simply copy pasted the plot and changed character names. <<less

Amazing how just 1 simple element can completely f*cking ruin a story in two three chapters.

Up until the moment the holy sword was introduced, the story was easily 5 star. God tier comedy.

After the holy sword was introduced? Complete f*cking garbage. Amazing how much hate I could get for that piece of sh*t of a sword in just a few minutes. Basically, after the holy sword is introduced, the main character doesn't have free will anymore. He gets tortured by the sword to follow its commands and sometimes the sword... more>> even directly controls his body. He gets no choice in doing anything, he's nothing more than a s*ave. <<less

Alistar and Magali are such an interesting duo, given their traits and all, but the sword just appears there to dampen everything. Its character is just a total put off.
I've never been a fan of being forced to do a specific thing, so I just can't find what happens to ML as something fun. If he indeed has to be 'hero-like', I'd rather want a more loose reasons, like if he doesn't do a good deed at least once a day he'll receive divine punishment, or perhaps once he's... more>> recognized by the country as a hero, he has to act as one in public otherwise he'll be executed (like her female counterpart), and so on. That way he'll have more room to use his wicked brain to do good deeds while pursuing his evil dream. <<less

I loved this.

Alistar and Magali are just so funny, and the Holy Cursed sword is perfectly cancerous.

It started out interesting, but the sword has ruined all the goodwill that was developed.

It controls him through mental pain to do whatever it wants, which means the story has essentially devolved into a guy just b*tching constantly, all the while going along with whatever the sword says.

All the fun is gone.

The story and characters interation is great and is a real fun to read.

Plot progression on the other hand feel forced and author milk the joke too much, to the point it just got annoying to read.

It would be great if the childish sword tune down his "justice" or at least learn from his mistake but nope, bad people do bad thing, me must punish, without killing, despite their crime is raping/killing/kidanapping innocent and may come back and bite my ass later, cause killing is bad.

The sword really ruins this... more>> novel for me, if its the author's goal to make readers hate the sword then he did it. <<less

In the beginning it was an amazing comedy. Like 5 star material. I've also read the manga and both are thoroughly hilarious until that shitty Holy Sword appeared. This novel crashed as soon as the holy sword showed up cause the MC is forced to follow it's orders. Like he's basically a s*ave to the sword. I dropped this after that.

This series really disappointed me

Well, what a ride. It had it's ups a downs, I really loved the interaction between ML and FL and MC's scummy behavior were golden in 8 out of 10 times
... more>>
Spoiler

it has an open ending and can easily have a continuation with those possible Arcs that the in-universe Legend tells, but this line caught my atention

"Therefore, if you are a history major or want to know more, I would appreciate it if you could pick up the continuation of my book, although the title has not been decided yet.

We, too, should strive to get as close to their backs as possible, making sure that we follow the example of the Hero Alistar and Saint Magali and strive to be the kind of people who love and help the people near us and dedicate ourselves to the good of the world.

See you."

Did the author implied that someone else can continue with their work or am I think it too much?

I wish I could see more FL's deredere side with MC, couldn't stop grinning on those parts, and a more details of the incidents that led to
Spoiler

Alistar and Magali's wedding, and the subsequent reactions of the other female characters that were interested in MC

anyways a good read if you have patient on those annoying parts in the first 3-4 arcs like
Spoiler

the Holy Cursed Sword self righteousness, I know that attitude was the plot enabler but DAMN it was annoying at the beginning.

Well, the novel is fun to read. The mc's inner monologue often made me laugh. This is actually the only reason I even read this novel.

You should read it for yourself and make your own judgement about it. Written here is only my own opinion.

I don't mean to talk bad about this novel, it's plot and translation quality is quite good. Also, I can understand and even agree to some of the mc's ideology. I really like the mc's character.

BUT, the only problem is the holy sword. I understand that... more>> the author made it to make the novel more interesting, I agree at first. But as the story goes on I get quite irritated about it. Always forcing the MC to be a hero against his will, and helping every girl in their trouble because its 'right' is what I hate the most about it.

That is reason why I rate this novel 3/5. Out of respect for the author who wrote this novel and the translator. Also because I did enjoy reading to some extent. <<less

An unique take on fantasy genre. The protagonist (s) is interesting so far, will update later in the future.

Ps. Author's grammar is solid and words is fluid enough for me to read without any discomfort

This is actually amazing.

The internal and unspoken dialogue draws eye-catching sparks between the main leads, and the world is delivered quickly and efficiently, drawing upon well-established fantasy tropes; it plays second fiddle, in any case, to the interactions and machinations between the dual protagonists. Some people may hate the sword, but in truth that is literally the only thing that can keep the male protagonist on the plot rails, because his drive to escape responsibility is put forth so strongly. The story knows that it lives and dies on its... more>> management of contrasts, so it has no choice. A flaw would be that the issues that they have to deal with, so far, are not very interesting.

As always, the question is whether the author can maintain this banter going forward, but at its current stage it is a breath of fresh air. <<less

The dynamic in the beginning between the leads was pretty interesting but the next arch was just the male lead being controlled to do good deeds. It was a bit funny at first but that was the entire arch so the joke was run into the ground. The next arch seems to have both the leads again so here's hoping.

Also the site that the chapters are on is tr*sh. It was working for a bit but now it's a mess of links and unnecessary pages. From c20 most chapters are... more>> split in two even though NU doesn't show that. <<less

So I went in thought id read about a witty and selfish Protagonist, which is perfect, because it deviates so much from all the cookiecutter MCs out there.

But then the author makes the interesting MC into a s*ave to a "holy sword" that tortures him if he doesnt help people and endanger himself.

It was promising for the first 10 chapters and then just went downhill, and theres no way up due to the powers the author gave the sword. (Can read MCs Mind, can control his body and can torture... more>> him whenever it wants)

Appearently by Ch30 the MC still doesnt have free will and im not willing to read this crap dynamic for that long.

Just hate it when good MCs get ruined by the circumstances theyre in with no real way out.

Tl;dr: Not a masochist, no thanks bro. <<less
