After a particularly vicious beating, he wakes up and realizes a Pill God’s soul has somehow merged with him, giving him additional memories. Relying on his improved instincts as he finally begins to cultivate, he realizes a huge conspiracy is underfoot within the Phoenix Cry Empire, one involving his father, the members of the imperial family, and even the emperor himself.

In order to solve the mysteries around him, he must rely on his new alchemy techniques and the powerful but baffling Nine Star Hegemon Body Art. Countless enemies block him as he attempts to climb to the peak of the cultivation world.

What a conflicting novel.

It's quite funny and the main character is really charismatic, it draws you in.

But conversely the author seems to insist on writing contrived, nonsensical plot developments to hamper the MC. And the worst part is, the characters don't acknowledge what's happened at all, the scandal is forgotten.

I'll use a fictional but analogous example - if the MC was in a pill competition and they asked the contestants to 'refine a cauldron of the highest grade pills they can' in order to join their alchemy association, and the... more>> MC produced a pill that was 20 grades higher than anyone else without even using a cauldron, just created it using the heavens and his pill fire in a never-before-seen display of alchemy, the organisers would walk up and be like 'wow that's the most impressive thing i've ever seen, congratulations.... is what I would be saying BUUUUT technically we asked for a CAULDRON of the finest pills and you didn't use your cauldron". Then they would go 'look rules are the rules, we can't bend them just to help you out, BUT if you want you can come join our alchemy association... but as you didn't actually place in the competition you can only join as like, the janitor'.

And its not just once, the most frustrating plot developments happen one after the other. No one is like "damn you got robbed you deserve better", it's just accepted that the most op guy is the janitor.

At times the story is really fun but I wouldn't suggest anyone read it unless they are masochistic, because the author insists on torturing the reader. The rating of 2 is partially because it really is torture to read, and partly because the author should be taught a lesson for doing the literary equivalent of taking a fine dining meal and dumping tomato sauce on it. <<less

So I've read up to chapter 230 and I can say this novel is pretty bad, not the worst but quite bad. The only reason I kept reading is because during the first book I kept seeing small good points, however mostly just super bad tropes. The second book is better but I will probably stop reading soon as allover it's pretty damn bad.

The good:

  • Occasionally funny
The Bad:

  • A lot of plot holes and inconsistency in power levels. The MC can beat or resist anyone regardless of level it seems.
  • Way too much harem. All major female characters who are attractive are just there to fall for the MC, with one exception who of course is there to regret angering the MC.
  • For male characters you pretty much know how they will end up once they are introduced, are they a d*ck to the MC? He will allow it to escalate out of proportion and kill them.
  • Anything the MC does is hailed as brilliant, no matter what he does everyone around him worships him. And in some cases half a chapter can be dedicated to describing how amazing everyone around him thinks the MC is.
Problems with the MC:

  • The author makes a point repeatedly about how much the MC suffered and is suffering. But quite frankly he hardly suffered that much, he was bullied for a few years as a kid that was it. All "suffering" that happens after the story starts turns out to be good for him anyway.
  • The MC has a single flaw, he is too proud and never backs down because of the pill god memories he has. However this never bites him in the ass, it always works out. Which makes this flaw just boring.
  • Anything that he does / says will be pretty much taken as pure genius by everyone around him constantly and it gets annoying fast.
In closing, this novel had potential if the author had not turned the main character into a Mary Sue. He never does something wrong and he never truly suffers. If you look at good wuxia like I shall seal the heavens the MC has several flaws and not only does the MC suffer for it, other people also think him weird because of his flaws. I think if you are 13-14 and looking for a harem power fantasy novel then this is probably a great read. For anyone looking for wuxia with decent characters go read I shall seal the heavens or Upgrade specialist instead. <<less

I am extremely close to dropping this novel. It's arguably one of the worst novels I've ever read which is quite bad considering the time I spend on the webnovel site. Anyways, here's my pros and cons:

pros:

- good translation

- yeah that's pretty much it

Cons:

- MC is a hypocrite. One example would be ... more>>
Spoiler

how the idiot continuously rejects getting another pet because apparently it's betraying his current pet yet the clown has 1000 different women. wtf kind of excuse is that. Another example would be how the MC refused to use a shield/armor because it apparently wasn't his own strength yet he uses weapons, skills, pills, etc. Overall a massive turn-off for any novel.

[collapse]

- 0 character development.
Spoiler

you would think he'd develop even a little bit after a close person dies due to his incompetence. He does things like throwing the enemies in a well instead of killing them and "letting fate decide" whatever the f*ck that means. He continues to due these arrogant actions and not go full power from the start. He does things like purposely chasing the enemy to drain his power when he can easily kill them. He plays around which lets the enemies get away all the time.

[collapse]

- Dao heart - I think it was called a dao heart but it's only used as an excuse for the author to continue his lazy writing. Instead of coming up with a valid excuse for why the MC cant do something, he throws in the "dao heart" bs. "oh he cant do this because of his dao heart. he cant do that because of his dao heart" etc etc

-inconsistent - It doesn't seem as prevalent further along with the novel but there were a decent amount of plotholes In the beginning. Author just randomly forgets rules he comes up with like an idiot.

- the whole face slapping and brick fighting bs that people seem to find extremely funny gets dull really quick

- usual cliches left and right

- Cringe. A lot of cringe. The MC continuously gets describes as god this god that. death god, war god, flame god god god god. It makes me want to dig into my skin. A lot of the "jokes" I find childish and unfunny as well. It makes it worse how the author writes things like "burst out laughing" "spat out blood" and other descriptions to these already unfunny jokes.

- He's always at the bottom.
Spoiler

He joins the worst sect out of 100 something. After he reaches the top, it turns out the 100 something sects are considered the worst branch of something bigger. He goes even further beyond yet once again he's at a sect that's considered the worst. Worst worst worst worst. it's boring and lacks creativity.

[collapse]

- Battles become dull as well. Every single battle is exactly the same. The only difference is the names. And the cherry on top is that the enemies always getaway in the last minute.

- I'm not even exaggerating, the enemies literally get away every single f*cking time it's honestly ridiculous.

- author for some reason kills off the actual interesting characters... off-screen. yeah f*cking off-screen. He just kills them off yet he keeps the plastic tr*sh alive.

- annoying young masters - he barely beats rank geniuses, now there's rank 2. he beats rank2 geniuses, now there's rank 3. He beats rank 3 geniuses now there's rank 4. etc etc. And the usual plastic arrogant personalities.

- tr*sh naming sense - the author really named one of the mc's main moves "spit the heavens 2". It's not a f*cking movie title wtf is split the heavens 2. Split the heaven and split the heavens 2....0 creativity. Others are straight-up cringe chunnibyou tr*sh like double destruction dragon or something.

- author tries his best to lengthen scenes to the point that it's like watching the Namek saga in Dragonball

- random info dumps - literally drop them out of nowhere

- repetitive phrases. yes, you explained it once you don't have to say the exact same thing in every f*cking sentence in a single f*cking chapter.

- random scenarios with 0 explanation like some random lady taking away his girls corpse and them just letting her do so

- Boring harem. plastic characters. MC acts all strong and arrogant but is a pu*sy when it comes to women. Also, there are a sh*t ton of women that drag MC down from the beginning. And it's ridiculous how
Spoiler

MC dedicates everything in the beginning to a girl he met for like 5 f*cking minutes because she's a jade beauty.

[collapse]

It's disappointing since the novel had a lot of potential in the beginning and considering how good the translations are, but it starts to decline fast after chapters 70-80 something. I'm currently at around 880. I don't know if I can stick around any further considering people complaining about the exact same repetitive bs in chapter 2000+. I honestly don't understand how people are able to give this novel positive reviews. this is one of the most frustrating novels I've ever read. Even ATG would be a masterpiece crafted by Picasso compared to this dogsh*t novel (not saying ATG is bad or anything but it has its own flaws)

Update: dropped few chapters later. Goodbye <<less

The dichotomy which exists in this novel can best be described in one sentence: This novel is a 4, but it deserves a 3.

Let's begin with the positives. We have an MC who is NOT lucky. It is constantly shown how the other martial geniuses are more lucky than him, to the extent that they have Heavenly representation of their luck. This novel also has a harem of at least partially interesting characters, even though the interesting harem members are only introduced later on. The power level of the MC... more>> stays grounded to an extent such that he constantly is forced to actively pursue stuff to strengthen himself.

Now, let's get into the negatives. The harem has got no real romance. I would say that the author has tried throughout the novel to literally stop the story to legitimize certain things, but the harem and the MC power level can never be legitimized.

The character of the MC is supposed to be "domineering". He is supposed to be this Omae wa mou shindeiru character who cannot be stopped. And yet, he is needlessly always shown as a victim. And this victim complex is more than Taylor Swift, especially in the later parts of the series. In addition, cliches aside, the fact that such a domineering man would prefer struggle so much to stay a virg*n... Just does't add up, especially from his meaning of domineering.

Now, the villains. I have one word for them: c*ckroaches. The author has perfected the technique to ensure the continued survival of one-dimensional villains who have no character trait other than the thicc character trait. I am astonished by how some of their dialogues have been written, with the most common being:

"Angered you? What qualifications do you have to be angry? You are just an ant! You should never have resisted! Resisting is your wrong! Resisting means you should die!"

No matter how satisfying it is to read about these disgusting folks getting their skulls bashed, understand that there is not one exception to this kind of villains. With the foreshadowing that is present right now, it might end up that 2000 chapters later, the guys who stole his talent probably did that just because they felt he doesn't deserve it. I mean, yes. Sure! But don't you have anything extra? Other than that one-dimension? No? Well then just f**k off!

In conclusion, Nine Star Hegemon Body Art is an inconsistent novel which has its moments of excellent humour, witty wordplay in the source language, and satisfying fights. But the lack of a counter-balance, and the author's seeming interest in spending weeks describing how great everything is, instead of actually questioning their greatness, fails this novel.

This is not Mango approved. <<less

So far it is average wuxia novel- typical cliche plot, lots of arrogant young masters, slapping faces, IQ of villains averaging 2 at most, MC IQ around 10 but since everyone else is at 2 he is smartest person out there. Plot armor saving MC even when he makes terribly decisions that are later exposing him to otherwise avoidable danger.

It's not terrible, not bad but at the same time not great or even good, just average. I think it deserves 2.5-3/5

I've changed my mind -- the story started great but after all of the author's shenanigans I'm dropping the rating to one star. I've never read such a consistently infuriating story. It's like the author got together a group of scientists to work out the perfect combination of words to evoke the limits of human rage.

  • Meaningless fights that drag on for chapter after chapter? Check!
  • Excruciatingly annoying enemies that escape over and over and over? Check!
  • Entire arcs where the MC's cultivation is stuck and he makes zero progress? Check! Heck, the author even throws in one powerful enemy after the other to harass the MC while he's stuck, so you can really FEEL the frustration!
  • Contrivances, deus ex machina and people picking up the idiot ball, all for the sake of heaping on more pointless drama? Check!
There are many more but I think you get the point.

Honestly most of the reviews outright baffle me.
Most of them are in the vein of "This is a cheap rip-off of xyz" or "I dun understand y protag so s*upid"

Frankly speaking, the story doesn't exactly start off all that amazing. It's got your standard MC gaining a cheat, in this case memories of a Pill God. As the story goes on however, it's not really the plot that drives the story. The plot gets better for sure, and certainly stop hindering the story.

What makes this story a half decent... more>> read is the main character. He's amusing, and doesn't need any particularly s*upid side-characters to show his comedic value. It's not overtly inane in short.

Overall, I find it starts off around 3 stars at best. There are some questionable tropes, and plot decisions that aren't exactly desirable. As the story goes on, it certainly improves, tropes are avoided, or subverted in silly yet amusing ways.

Long Chen may be your stereotypical shameless, but moral maincharacter, he may make dumb decisions, but he feels far more like a real person than most MCs. He looks after his brothers, his harem and allies, and they progress together as one giant family. Bit p**sed it's harem, but at least his jade beauties have good characters and actually yeet his enemies.

Don't take it too seriously. It's an amusing read, and you don't have to suspend anywhere near as many braincells as you do in a lot of the 4.0+ rated CN novels I've read. If you can accept it's a cultivation novel, I feel like you'll probably have a lot of fun with it.

Oh and despite the hordes of typical braindead idiots who exist to be faceslapped, some people do recognise Mount Tai. And it's all the more amusing when it happens. <<less

The MC is full of cringe. Side characters are made s*upid to let the MC appear smart.

Pretty much every Sect that the MC goes to follows the same plot. MC becomes like some kind of Gary Stu preaching to the genius and ordinary disciples about not having combat experience and make them look up to him BLAH BLAH BLAH.... Just about every law enforcement department targets the MC thinking that he has secrets worth stealing while 1000's of others couldn't even care about his secrets. Corruption is dominant in the... more>> Sects because their Sect leader couldn't be bothered to deal with it until MC comes along.

MC is full of contradictions. He doesn't want to waste time yet he refuses to use the Sect's uniform which leads him to perform a time consuming mission just so he doesn't need to use the uniform. MC uses priceless treasures on his followers which changes their lives and allows them to reach a height that they never would've been able to with their talent and without his help, they are his sworn followers and soldier of his troops. Preaches about them being life and death brothers. MC's personality despises traitors and deserters. One follower goes to a higher realm and heard news that MC was at war and would need help but he ended up abandoning his mission to follow and help the MC because he has a nice comfortable life with high status in a new Sect and found a pretty girl. Deserter's love rival plotted against him and the little bugger goes running to the MC garnering praise and sympathy from the MC. MC even takes the deserter back to his comfortable life and even beats up the love rival for the deserter. Deserter join MC and MC is so happy.

Fights are unnecessarily dragged over several chapters and the MC having to fight the same enemy more than three times on three separate occasions doesn't help the sheer frustration of it. <<less

The novel is really good,

MC has a harem, but he earns it through being funny which is pretty rare at least in my experience of xianxia novels.

MC is also shameless enough, and its really funny.

MC is a little bit overpowered, but he earns the power instead of sitting around doping up all day and when he does get stronger via pills or anything, he has the cheat memories, but no way to make use of them because he lacks ingredients so he goes on a little journey for the... more>> ingredients.

Overall, novel isn't like a lot of the other stereotypical xianxia/xuanhuans/wuxia novels out there and its really nice, funny and relaxing to read. <<less

This story has a bunch of the cliches but for the most part everything is done better than other generic chinese novels. It dosent focus too much on 1 power up after another although there are enough power ups to keep the reader satisfied.

I'd say it is a combo of atg, agm, and invincible, but it takes most of the good parts from each and mashes them together.

I binge read the first 200 chapters on a lazy saturday and it all went by fairly smoothly. There are some things that... more>> I found annoying or objectionable but the traits are also reasonably explained and even the MC finds them annoying. There is definitely a lot of parody and it pokes fun at the genre every couple chapters.

Overall, it is a refreshing read since after 2 years of reading most of the stories in the genre it started to get a bit stale. <<less

Wrote this little review/rant for those who are just starting out or plan to start out but are not sure cause of all these negative reviews, I will write a more in depth review some other time but this is for you guys.

The reason why this series has shitty ratings on novelupdates, is cause most of the reviewers on that website have the attention span of a frog and the patience of a chihuahua
The first 100 chapters, the author makes it seem, like he had all the plot cliches... more>> checked out, and made a generic story. It for sure was generic, but the way it was delivered wasn't. The character interactions with the nobles and the marquises and the princes are very well done, and I actually felt danger for him, cause it felt so real. His relationship with Ming Yan, how she wants to break off the marriage, it's very generic, same goes for all the other stuff, but as I said earlier, the way it was delivered was unlike any other. The girl is kind, she didn't want to embarass him, went out her way to go through a recluse spot and talk about it, takin in consideration the feelings of his mom and his image/pride etc. She also felt bad about it because it didn't feel good to kick him while he's already down and cried etc. Eventually actually starting to have feelings for him. For MC, he had love at first sight, it wasn't created for the plot, it felt natural.
But people don't pay attention to these minor details, they just see that it's a cliche plot and automatically close their eyes and move on, once he joins a sect, things starting to get good, he meets lots of geniuses, puts them in their places, bad blood is formed but eventually they even squash the beef and become brothers. Usually the guys would've plotted against him for hundreds of chapters or so until he killed all of them, but instead they buried the hatched and became brothers. The war between the righteous and evil paths, etc. And finally the jiuli realm. All of these 3 things legit happen in 300 chapters, the series is not boring, permanently something is going on to keep you entertained story wise, action wise, character wise, etc. <<less

This novel is very hateful, MC has a gods memories who looks down the nine firmament of heaven of the Immortal World but the MC literally has credible expierences, he just have the Pill God Memories so the author could write his alchemy refining sessions as "easy" but MC is literally just a mediocre alchemist and he even used Pill Gods Memories to justify his alchemy ability which os just average in the Immortal world, and the genuises appearing in the story is so Heavenly.

The cultivation techniques "Nine Star Hegemony... more>> Body Arts" is literally a cutlivation art that with cultivated to the peak, the user can challenge anyone in the universe, but the MC cultivate it but can only be comparable to favored, choosen geniuses which literary pales in comparison to the central plains, so heres the genius ranks " Favored, Choosen, Rank 1-6 Celestials, Rank 7-8, Celestials, And True Celestials" MC is literally so weak even with a heaven defying cultivation art that he needed lots of battle techniques to match his opponets, but his enemy literally have it too which results to the MC being beaten and laiden with grave injuries, he is always in battle with life and death and he is always inferiot to geniuses since they can escape with "space talismans" and its been a thousand chapters but MC never had one, it always relies on plot armor for the MC to survive, save by mysterious lady, elder and sect master and many more which literary doesn't align with the cultivation's arts domineering way, MC always beaten back and blue. MC fights life and death battle in the secret realm and they are both heavily injured, same powers and same level and they both get away and escaped, MC the condenses another one of the nine stars and mc's power grows 10 time stronger and he fights his enemy of the previous life and death battle again and MC dominate his opponent but his enemy used a secret treasure that used is core energy (foundation) and spirit blood (cultivators foundation) as a sacrifice to fight the MC and he manages to heavily injure the MC and they fight equal again and the enemy get aways, severals days later MC and the enemy meets again but enemy is said to have been able to miraculously recover his spirit blood and core energy and the enemy miraculously too the enemy got stronger and fights the MC equals again, the scheme go again and again, basically nothing change, MC gets chased again and again and schemed against, the plot is the same just that people is stronger, from the xuntian monastery - xuntian supermonastery - xuntian dao sect - head xuantian dao sect, the novel is not recommend to people who expect a better and changing situations, even with superb cultivation art and a treasure that originated from the creation of the universe, MC is still weak, he literally got struck by a curse from an enemy genius the same levels as himself and the caused him to stagnate in his physique, the MC can't fight with energy and he can't used energy to nourish his body so breaking through was not feasible for him because it would only be useless, so his cultivation stagnated for years while the MC friends and soldiers he cultivated is already way ahead of him and the MC can't even beat the weakest soldier he trained in the Dragonblood legion and then I stopped at (1366) caused the novel is so hateful and the plot is only repeating again and again and each sect the MC advanced takes like 300 chapters for each one. <<less

This was one of the first 2000+ chapter web novels I started reading a year or two ago. I enjoyed the never-ending adventure of Long Chen in this limitless cultivation world because I did not examine, like Batman, the various plot-holes and deficiencies. This is a novel to be enjoyed like soda not wine. It's often times comedic and tries to ramp up the tension but, like most web novels, doesn't have the courage to kill or permanently damage any main characters.

My only gripe with NSHBA is that the cast... more>> of characters has grown too large and its difficult to remember everyone of significance to Long Chen. Other than that I treat this novel like a slightly spicier Saturday morning cartoon. Funny, low-stakes entertainment. I was again discouraged by the reviews written before me. Not everyone who reads web novels have the sensibilities of a jaded, hardened grizzled NYT reviewer. There are very few novels north of the 3.5 stars that aren't yaoi/yuri/shonen-ai/shoujo-ai. I can't believe that all the good web-novelists only write those kinds of stories.

NSHBA is not the hill to die on for me, but I noticed a lot of the negative reviews had to deal with disliking harems or the fact that Long Chen can never permanently deal with his enemies unless they become irrelevant to the story. I don't even like the concept of harems, but this one is quite benign as harems go, and is certainly less explicit than some of the smut recommended on this site (Long Chen still has his V-Card where I left off).

With regard to the never-ending, near-undying nature of Long Chen's enemies, I would again like to refer you all to the saturday morning cartoon or many comic books. Lex Luthor harassed Superman for most his adult life without any consequences. There are plenty examples I dont feel like getting into, but I think most of the negative reviews are from people who clearly have graduated to more sophisticated plots and literature in general but have clearly run out of things to enjoy and have circled around to tr*sh a novel as unserious as this one.

NSHBA is YA content targeted at heteros*xual boys. You can nitpick DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Pokemon, etc. As not being sufficiently deep or lacking fleshed-out supporting characters as well. In terms of quality I think that this novel is slightly above the average of its genre. <<less

2.5/5 For now?

The problem with the novel is that the author set the story up so that the MC had this flaw that basically moves the story forward which can really make or break this novel for some people.

This is just a minor spoiler about why the MC's hubris drives the plot.

Spoiler

His cultivation technique makes it so that he can't submit to anybody - AKA a stronger antagonist blows air in his ear and he will always fight back regardless of the amount of enemies that will make. This causes all the problems in the story which makes it very annoying sometimes.

[collapse]

The author set up this loop - it's very cyclical and I'm basically waiting for a tragedy to happen to befall the MC otherwise there will be no change in the flow of the story which is:

    • MC, his wives & friends arrive at [insert new place] which has people much stronger than them, and they always want him dead because of the author.
    • Then there's a struggle of infighting/betrayal and chasing antagonists/super duper geniuses who are arrogant for like 50 chapters. Maybe the genius ran away 3 times so there are more chapters for that.
    • Then the author reveals who is actually the hidden hand controlling the board - which happens to be some new supreme power that has a number of geniuses that MC will have to fight or it is an old enemy cannon fodder which has unlocked a new power
    • Then the cycle repeats until MC, his wives & friends get strong enough.
The MC is portrayed to basically be immensely smart and always knows or at least has perceptions as to who wants him to die, but he'll jump into every single trap because of his hubris.

If you don't like harems don't even touch this webnovel - the romance is sappy and rarely realistic. There are only a couple moments where I enjoyed the development of a few women and wanted to read more about them.

Overall the first couple of arcs were very enjoyable (4/5) because the MC's fate seemed just purely unlucky, but the author set it up so that everyone wants him to die so you get kind of angry sometimes.

ATG is loads better than this if you're looking for a flawed MC. <<less

I'll start with a disclaimer, this novel is definitely not for everyone. I mainly like it bc its basically junk food thats fun to read and I don't have to pay too much attention most of the time. Its going to have a ton of the tropes everyones used to if you've read a few novels in this genre. If you're wanting a well crafted, intricate novel you'll be disappointed and probably hate this. If I'm being honest I should probably give it 2 or 3 stars but I rate... more>> things on how much I enjoy it so hear me out before you completely give up on it.

I guess I'll start out with the good. The MC is pretty fun for the most part. He starts the story as someone trying to get stronger but he has a good amount of fun and comedy. I actually really laughed at some of his jokes at the start. The author does a great job with how he speaks to others. Every novel says their MC has a sharp tongue but I really do think the author has kept the insults or arguments he comes up with pretty clever and satisfying throughout the story. He doesn't start out as a complete mu*derhobo who kills everything that moves but the world and events do eventually make him this way to a certain extent. It doesn't feel that unearned and he doesn't go around slaughtering innocents... for the most part. (I'll go more into this in the bad section) Early on I really enjoyed some of his dialogue when he's flirting with the many members of his harem. Its fun and cute at first but it does get a bit stale and the author eventually stops focusing on the romance for the most part. I'm happy to at least have some romance bc some novels really suffer from a lack of it. For those that care (I'm kind of indifferent) the cultivation technique the MC uses is cool and is thoroughly explained and pretty well thought out. The action and fights is really enjoyable most of the time and are the main reason I've stuck with it. The author does a good job hyping things up and describing the fights, although I do have some complaints which I'll mention in the bad section. The worldbuilding is okay, the world is decently interesting to explore whenever the MC isn't tied down to sect.

Onto the bad. (I wonder if I should make multiple paragraphs for this bc I feel like its going to be long and rant filled) The way the author sets things up at times is simply infuriating. The amount of times I wanted to pull my hair out over the most obnoxious things happening was definitely not just a few. The MC has insanely bad luck and the world quite literately wants to kill him most of the time. Without going into major spoilers the author explains this away as being a part of his cultivation technique which I think we all know is insanely overpowered and has some world shattering secrets to it. I think the authors excuses for why so many things go wrong are really flimsy and just make the novel annoying to read. I can still remember one near the start of the book where the MC is doing the entrance exam for a sect he's joining where he has to go into a tomb and defeat the evil spirit inside. The sect actually f*cks up and forgets to remove one with an insanely powerful spirit that the MC can't possibly hope to defeat. The sect acknowledges that they made the mistake but still force the MC to try to complete it after they weaken it a bit, but its still way more powerful than he is. Their "fair compensation" is that they'll accept him into the sect at the lowest level even if he can't defeat it. They also allow to of his future harem members to help him and if they can't defeat it they'll lose their core disciple positions they just won by beating the harder tombs. So the MC ends up beating it with his two waifus being almost no help in the end but the spirit decides to blow its head up rather than have it given to the elders so the MC can get his reward. You were supposed to give the head to them in order to pass. So, what happens next? "Oh sorry, you failed bc it blew its head up, nevermind that we f*cked up in the 1st place and it never should have existed for you to fight" "Oh well, at least you can be a lower disciple but we really can't bend the rules even though you clearly beat it" Whats that you say? The girls should have failed too? Oh well, they get to keep their spots bc we'll bend the rules to let them participate in the first place and then say they keep their spots after we said they wouldn't. As for you we really can't bend the rules even though this whole situation was out f*ck up in the 1st place" The author doesn't even address the fact that girls keep their spots and he flip flops on things like this all the time. Writing down this incident made me just as annoyed as I was at the time and I stopped reading here for a couple months. I hate the way the author explains this and many other future incidents away so just be prepared for this type of bullsh*t and inconsistency with rules. Every sect he joins, which is a lot always has all of these problems and bawckwards people. The MC will form close relationships with all the sect leaders and outside of one of them they all seem like horribly incompetent people to me. The author in my opinion gives terrible reasons for why they've let their sects deteriorate so much by the time the MC shows up. Thankfully annoying sects and s*upid rules goes away the further you get into the novel bc the MC stops giving a f*ck and just kills everything that tries to slow him down or get in his way.

Next set of complaints. The romance is alright at first but it feels pretty weak the further you go on in the story. There aren't a ton of quiet moments for relaxing talks and flirting. If there are I didn't find them as interesting as the first couple partners he ends up with. Its also kind of annoying hearing the MC always says how much his waifus sacrifice for him. Which is true for the most part but its not like he hasn't been crystal clear about his life being filled with thorns and hardships. Stop being so mopey about it and just accept that they really love you. Characters are interesting and have cool personalities or quirks about them but the development outside of the MC is fairly nonexistent. They may get stronger and more accepting of the hard and bloody lifestyle they live but that hardly feels like development to me.

The MC wastes too much time collecting for or helping power up his legion of "hot blooded brothers" which I just found annoying. Maybe people will like the fact that he has this insanely powerful and loyal legion that follows him around but I couldn't care less for the most part. I would have been fine with his waifus and a few of the named characters that exist in his legion that actually get some screentime but theres 10, 000 of them and we obviously don't know any of them. The part thats annoying is the MC will always say he's running out of time or he needs to focus up and get stronger, but he dicks around to try to get all these benefits for this large amount of people that slow him down so much. Fights are one of the best parts about this novel but it doesn't mean they can't be infuriating too. The author blends in my first complaint where the MC just gets so unlucky and the enemies are all loved by the heavenly daos, so of course they'll probably be able to run away multiple times before we kill them. It happens a ton for half of the novel and doesn't get better until later where the MC just kills people on the first try most of the time. It also ties into my complaint about him wasting time making his legion stronger when his cultivation technique is just absurdly strong compared to everything else. He gets upset when people die or things go wrong and I'm just sitting there thinking about how he could have single handedly won the fight if he just put all his focus on his own cultivation. It wouldn't be a problem if he got stuff for the named characters and his waifus but for the rest he wastes way too much time getting them to a decent level which gimps his own cultivation. I get we need the enemies to seem strong so its interesting and we have a story but I can't help but think about all the time he wastes that could solve all his problems. As far as the fights themselves they can get a little stale at times bc you'll read a 10 page fight where the enemy and the MC just cycle through all these absurd abilities with the "haha, this isn't even my final form" attitude. It could be condensed at times but I still like the fights overall.

As I stated before, the MC doesn't start off as a mu*derhobo although he does kill from really early on. The way the author sets it up the world is trying to kill the MC and anybody would get worn down by that after a while. The later parts of the novel are such a joy bc he finally just starts killing enemies and doesn't care about his status or the consequences. The worst and most annoying parts of the novel are when he's a member of a sect and he has to follow all these rules and always has people f*cking with him to slow him down. The MC doesn't take sh*t from anybody from early on and he even kills most people that get in his way but the sects limit the amount of killing he does by a lot. He stays in them even though they do next to nothing for him most of the time bc he needs to waste time building up his legion. The author does have some problems with repeating the same type of setting and plotline over and over again. For instance theres 3 settings that get repeated ad nauseum: time spent in a sect, Ancient inheritances, secret realms, different spaces etc. and out in the wilderness/kingdom hopping when sh*t hits the fan for him personally and he has to run away from all the trouble he's caused. I really loved when he goes out on his own bc I don't have to read about his legion or sect life and it feels fresh and interesting when he stumbles upon different things.

I'm getting kind of tired of typing about this and I think that sums up most of the good and bad. If you read all of my ramblings well bravo, I know I don't write super well and tend to repeat myself and use run-on/broken sentences lol. I know I wrote way more for the bad but this novel really is a lot of fun with the fights and when the MC is making fun of or cursing his enemies. The romance is okay at first and at least it exists bc I know a lot of novels completely neglect it which makes things really boring, at least for me. The novel is that s*upid popcorn movie thats easy to watch and you don't have to pay a ton of attention to. Its dumb fun, so give it a try if thats you're thing and you like this genre. <<less

One of my favorite cultivation novels, but thats only until about chapter 1500..

This novel was pretty fun to read, but the repetition goes to some next level sh*t in this one.

  • Every fight follows the same pattern, ALWAYS.
  • Every joke is the same, ALWAYS.
  • MC carrying the whole dragon blood legion with him for 4400 + chapters is the same s*upid shit, ALWAYS.
  • This is one of the most s*upid plots I have ever seen in a cultivation novel. MC carrying 10.000+ dead weights with him because of "BROOTHERHOOD". Bit*h plz, out of the 10.000 we only know 15 peoples names. The rest can go all die for all I care. Some tr*sh people somehow become amazing cultivators, ALWAYS, by following MC around.
  • MC ALWAYS being the underdog in every single fight with other geniuses. In first fight, MC will ALWAYS be weaker and barely draw with the opponent, or just run away. In second fight, MC will ALWAYS be just a bit stronger than the genius opponent, but ALWAYS not strong enough to kill him. MC must ALWAYS fight all the genius opponents at least 3 times in order to kill them, sometimes even more.
  • MC ALWAYS gets framed, and chased for s*upid reasons, by the whole world.
  • MC will ALWAYS BE A virg*n, even 4000+ chapters in. (I dont count the s*x with Leng Yueyan, because he was basically forced into submitting. He literally got f*cked, instead of fcking.)
  • Oh and yea, MC will ALWAYS be lower in cultivation than the whole dragon blood legion by a few stages.
Do you fellow daoists, manage to see the patern here??? I guess you do. Its the word 'ALWAYS'. Because thats what happens in this novel. The same pattern of the above points happens ALWAYS during the 4400+ chapters of this novel.

So concluding,... more>> I'd like to say that this was one of my favorite cultivation novels of all time, until I got bored the f*ck out, because I am not about to read 4400+ chapters of recycled plot over and over and over and over again.

I do suggest reading this novel to people, but its definetely one of those novels that one must drop at some point midway. I dropped just before Long Chen leaves the first world, as for where you drop it, its your call.

Until next time! <<less

I'm not sure how this novel has such a low rating a 3.3. I've read atg, marital world, I shall seal the heavens. And I strongly believe that it stands on par with atg and martial world. The humor is good in my opinion. People say its repetitive but I honestly dont see how you can call this novel repetitive when atg has a tournament every arc. 100% sure a bunch of people read 50 chapters and spammed 1 star reviews. The harem is good also with characters that feel... more>> different. The story is not cliche <<less

I don't recommend reading this under any circumstance. The novel on the whole doesn't seem too horrible but when you apply any amount of thought to the story it all falls apart. Here's what I mean by that.

The first thing we are made aware of is that the MC is supposedly a combination of the original body and a pill god. My problem with that is the MC acts like a complete idiot at times and a master at others. He wants to make money, but can't figure out that... more>> he can simply sell off some pills for it. Say it was left behind by his father or something. Either way, he complains about a lack of funds when the pills he makes can supposedly sell for millions. If he wanted to hide it all I'd understand, but he blatantly shows them off by giving them to people.

The second is how the story has all the boring tropes, every woman is beautiful, every person ever can be classified as either a ride or die or an enemy to be killed. Every single person that isn't a friend is immediately antagonistic towards him for no real reason at all. Not to mention the extremely annoying way the MC is controlled by his dick. He supposedly falls in love after a single moment of staring at a woman he's never met before, then a few chapters later is falling over himself to please another girl. At this point I'm surprised he doesn't go after his own mother, at least then it'd be somewhat interesting to read.

The final straw is how utterly s*upid the novel itself is. The plot of his father being the most powerful being of his generation yet the entire capital going against his family doesn't make any sense. There could be something more to it but I sincerely doubt the author could write something remotely complex. The MC is often dumbed down for plot reasons and the same applies to everyone around him. The best way I can explain it is if you could imagine the most outrageous scenario possible with everyone being utterly idiotic and make it the norm, that would be this novel. The worst part of it all is that this is only 16 chapters in and I dread to think about what happens a couple hundred later.

Do not read this under any circumstance, there are other novels out there with these tropes but this is just so bad it makes them seem like masterpieces. <<less

Nine Star Hegemon Body Arts has the usual xianxia/xuanhuan tropes that you can be found in almost every of them. Perhaps, that could be considered one of the flaws it has, but barring that, there are things that it does very well that make this story stand out above others.

Here are some of what I think are highlights about the story:

  • While the story tends to follow a repetitive cycle
    Spoiler

of moving onto a sect -> tournament/another dimension world -> grand fight -> move to bigger sect -> rinse and repeat with variance

    [collapse]
, what stands out to be the hidden past of Long Chen and the history behind his world and others. The mystery really pushes the reader to try and learn more about the greater plot, which is a first for me, personally. There are also some decent explanation on so many "geniuses" are appearing within Long Chen's era, and it feels like the author has really planned far ahead (though, there are some plot holes and armor, of course).
  • Dialogue is really refreshing, though more on Long Chen's side. Sadly, antagonists are often seen uttering the same old adages of "courting death", "frog in the well", "if I don't kill you, I'm not human". However, what comes from Long Chen's mouth are often hilarious and different than most other novel's characters. A reoccuring theme in the story is how Long Chen often has to fight against both Righteous and Corrupt Path sects, and he often snarks against the hypocrisy of the Righteous Path. It feels almost like a call out to a lot of novels where the main character is often suppressed by people who are supposed to be shining paragons. Not only that, the conversations about Heavenly Daos, loyalty, and "righteousness" are also great to read through.
  • Most of the heroines have their own personality and backgrounds, and they're not instantly "once a waifu, no longer plot relevant". Each heroine are strong, and some of them are just as strong or stronger than the main character. Long Chen displays great loyalty to his wives, and there is no s*x or dual cultivation shenanigans at all.
Here are some neutral or negative points of the story.

  • Long Chen has character flaws, and he gets called out on it rightfully so. Long Chen does not view himself as a paragon or anything; as long as you don't threaten his brothers and his loved ones, he won't do anything back. Of course, the plot always tend to force this point, which results in him having to kill no matter what. While he's not a person who slaughters for no reason, his temper and patience is often a major issue.
  • The story shares many standard xianxia/xuanhuan tropes about cultivation methods and levels, alchemy and flames, and battles. If you've seen one novel's fight, NSHBA isn't any different. The arcs tend to be repetitive in nature, though there is still enough variance within them to keep you interested in the story.
  • Side characters are not that fleshed out. Even if there are re-occurring characters, we just only know their name, their cultivation level, and barely any of their motivations, background, or interests.
  • Often times, you'd wonder how someone who has a higher cultivation base than Long Chen would have "little to no battle experience" and only got there through "receiving pointers" only. This odd consistency just makes cultivation levels feel like a joke at times.
  • The amount of times that the Righteous Path has colluded with Corrupt Path to try and kill Long Chen will make you roll your eyes. One argument can be said that this is part of the major plot
    Spoiler

that the entire continent has such deep corruption and Long Chen is part of the tide to cleanse it all.

    [collapse]
Above all, I do think that NSHBA is one of the most enjoyable reads for a xianxia/xuanhuan novel, and that if you were interested with Battle Through the Heavens, this might appeal to you as well.

The novel's good points are all over shadowed by its bad points. There are so many meaningless and dragged out fights, where the enemy may not even die due to karmic luck.

It's okay once in a while but when most battles are just a rinse and repeat version of previous fights, it's very frustrating.

1800+ chapters and still no sign of the main plot. This is not worth reading at all, It's just pure torture to the reader because the author is dragging the story endlessly. 3 stars are just for... more>> the occasional comedy. <<less
