This novel is far from perfect. Its main selling point is a fairly well done overpowered female protagonist. On the other hand, its main weaknesses are a terrible sense of blind Chinese nationalism, the weirdly s*upid mind games that all the characters face, as well as the complete lack of research the author has done on any of the subjects presented in the novel.

I first began reading this novel both because of the amazing review score it had, as well as for a cross-dressing protagonist. The story starts off quite... more>> well, with a female lead who dies in her own world but is pulled into reincarnating into a future world because of a "grandpa teacher"-like spiritual entity inside her mind. It continues on to quite hilarious descriptions of her mother and the other characters around her as she slowly progresses through life pretending to be a boy in order to be able to inherit her father's inheritance and legacy.

The characters in the novel, up to the point I've read, are quite interesting. They're all varied in personality and working through their own motivations as they interact with our heroine Ling Lan. We have an overbearing mother character, a kind grandpa figure who's also a hidden ninja, a s*upid yet competent AI assistant, as well as a wide range of friends that collect around her. Yet the most interesting character is still the MC Ling Lan, who despite being an incredibly talented girl pretending to be a boy, only has the single objective of having a normal life and ultimately giving birth to the most talented child possible.

Another aspect of this author that I really like is her skill in describing battles. The author has a natural talent for describing and directing melee fights between individuals. While there isn't much focus on any actual martial arts or actual techniques, the author still does a good job with understanding the capabilities and physical limits of the human body and expressing the fights as a natural and fluid manner. However, at the same time, the author is quite terrible at understanding the limitations of non-human entities.

This brings me to one of the main areas where the author has been negligent - her research into science fiction. This is undoubtedly a science-fiction work, but this novel does nothing more than throw around the jargon without understanding what any of it actually is. Ling Lan's "AI Assistant", named Little Four, is more of a little kid than an AI. At times he's smart and competent, but most of the time he's nothing more than a little kid throwing a tantrum (though this adds to the comedy). As things go, this is a terrible trait for any AI assistant to have. Next, there are the mechas. While I congratulate the author for adding the detail that the main obstacle for a mecha pilot is being able to withstand the G-forces of the constant accelerations the vehicle has to face, at the same time I also have to blame the author for not understanding the slightest bit about the mechas themselves. When faced with a complicated system like a humanoid robot, she believes that it's only possible to completely control such a robot using hand motions to individually manipulate each joint of the robot, causing a huge amount of stress on the hand-speed of the operators. She has completely refused the idea that such systems might use computer assistance to automate the processes, and views AI in controlling robots as a bad thing. This is only annoying when you consider that any AI system as advanced as the ones in this story should be able to pilot these mechas far better than any human operator ever could. In addition, there are several instances where weapons are magically enhanced by the addition of an AI into them, breaking out of physical limitations that they should not have ever been able to break out of.

Ultimately, while this is a science-fiction story, it's also a terrible example of the science-fiction genre as it completely fails to understand the implications, uses, and limitations of the very technology it introduces.

On a related note is the idea that kids mature much faster than in the past. In the story, it's completely understandable that kids are much more physically developed because of the various gene-stimulating agents and chemical therapies that they undergo from a young age. However, at the same time, there is no explanation for why 6-year-old kids have the same level of mental maturity and genius as a grown man. Right from the beginning, we see 6-year-olds engaged in mind-games and politics against each other. This would be okay if the story presented some form of explanation for why these kids have such mental stimulation, but if we just look at the experiences of the MC Ling Lan, there is no instance where the kids undergo any kind of mental augmentation at all. Even for Ling Lan, there is no explanation for why the "learning space" provided by her AI assistant expects 6-month-old children to be able to understand the human language and also start playing mind-games against trained military instructors in order to obtain training.

One of the more annoying aspects of the story is the author's obsession with Chinese nationalism. Right from the beginning, we are made to understand that the new Federation is just the author's idea of a Chinese space empire. Later on, we learn that their main enemies are the Empire, which is overtly declared to be a Japanese colonial space empire, signaled by their use of the rising sun as their symbol and how their commanders all use childish Japanese words in the middle of the military talks to further clue the readers to that fact. The author also makes it clear of her vehement hate for the Japanese in several passages where she references the Nanking Massacre. The Japanese troops are always dressed in black, have black mechas, and are blamed for a lot of the faults in the government because of their agents who have infiltrated the Chinese government. In addition, the Japanese commanders are portrayed as incompetent egotistical maniacs who know nothing about their own troops and have to rely on their subordinates to make decisions for them. The Empire is very clearly a stand-in to express the author's own rage against the Japanese.

The author also has a terrible habit of releasing spoilers in the middle of the story. It's as if the author is constantly afraid that her readers can't understand the implications of things, as she often reveals what will happen in the later chapters as an implication of the decisions that are taken in the current chapter. For example, very early into the story, in the middle to talking about Ling Lan's father's legacy, the author directly tells us that her father is not actually dead and will return in a later chapter, directly spoiling a major part of the story for us.

Overall, this story is cute and humorous. It fits into the standard trope of female-oriented CN novels where we see an overpowered female lead who plays mind-games to defeat all her opponents. However, don't come into this story expecting to find any actual science-fiction elements, competent villains, or extremely consistent internal logic. <<less

At first I was skeptical of all these 5 star reviews being a some sort of Qidian conspiracy... but after reading it, it's actually rather interesting.

Just kinda think of it as a somewhat xianxia plot (kinda), but sci-fi and with a crossdressing MC haha. Honestly tho, it's pretty refreshing to see a female in this type of "manly" setting. Crossdressing hijinks are something to look forward to too ;3

Basically our MC Ling Lan dies at 24 due to a long term illness. Before her soul can scatter, she's saved by... more>> this super advanced AI thing and dragged through space and time into the future (not the future where the AI is from tho). In that future, there's mechas and hover cars and cultivation and such. Ling Lan has a golden finger with super good body constitution and spiritual power and a training system and a good lineage, but things don't go so easy for her in this military dominated society. Seems like it'll head into politics/interstellar war territory too, so that's something I'm looking forward to.

Not sure if you can consider our MC as a Mary Sue, but it's a nice change from all those vengeful female assassins and doctor geniuses these Chinese female protagonist novels are usually plagued with. She's cool and kickass in her own way, not to mention that since she's crossdressing, she shouldn't have to be subjected to the weak and pretty stereotypes for females you see a lot... then again I can't read ahead (dunno a lick of Chinese) so I can't guarantee anything. Let's hope the male lead doesn't stick to the stereotypes either.

Give it a shot up to 34 if it peaks your interest, then switch over to Qidian if you feel like it has enough worth to continue. The translation quality of both have been really satisfying so far.

EDIT// MTLed up to CH 854 by now (there's still 600 some to catch up?). Spoilers under the cut:

Spoiler

As of 854:

  • her dad came back
  • she and her school buddies are 20 something now
  • they've graduated from school after establishing their own team
  • Ling Lan has been put in charge of an actual regiment that she had to reform
  • still hasn't revealed she's a girl and still hiding her OP-ness
  • love interest is established (pretty obvious) but nothing has happened (except maybe visiting his room at night)
  • something might be going on with Little Four & the system but only hints so far
  • maybe a war coming up soon
[collapse]

I actually do still like it, but it can get a bit slow at times. By slow, I mean the plot moves at a crawl pretty much. It's not too slow, but it's slow enough. I've yet to see Ling Lan and the others really find a purpose to fight in war (other than nationalism and looking up to Ling Lan etc) so it's hard to understand their motivations. So far it feels like an endless power up novel with no goal in sight (I mean you can infer conquering the universe/becoming the strongest would be end game, but idk). They've been adding in new mysteries while not really resolving past ones so I'm just kinda...

Anyways, still good for people who like reading dem eternal xianxias. Just wish it was a little more fast paced. <<less

Last update : 16 Mar 2018.

After half a year of hiatus, the author recovers and the story continues.. ---

Read it. Love it enough to read google's MTL !! Transmigration to the future, Female MC, hard working MC, social interaction.. That's normal. However, when you combine Gundam with Wuxia and Inter Galactic Starwars and battle and war and Psyche Training and humerous Romance and Boy Love and Army Politics and Traitors.. You get this wonderful novel! ---

There're reasons for the development of MC in every arcs. A bit of plot armor is acceptable (and require). The dialogue and humor between each characters is very good, almost everyday-like talking, not overrated drama. BEST of all - the female MC is surrounded by good boys, but there is NO harem. The romance is developed slowly and hilarious romantic, as the female MC is very tyranny and cold heart and cruel and ruthless male BOSS since childhood until adult (and no one know that she is not male!). But

Spoiler

the male MC still loves him (her?) despite she (he?) clearly state that he (she??) hates man.

BTW, should we call boy love if the female MC loves the male MC?
[collapse]

Ahhh! Do not expect any romance until ch. 800++

Sorry, NO harem or interc**rse or s*x scene at all. BTW, The most hilarious about the characters is that male (assistant) MC.
Spoiler

He is the most beautiful girl of the whole galaxy. He knows that too, and use his peerless beautiful face to unceasingly allure the she-male female MC.

[collapse]

There is school (and inter school) fighting arc, but not boring at all. SOME characters (several) who appear in these arcs are not just the passer-by but pivot in 300-400 chapters later! Such as
Spoiler

>the superstar singer girl who is on the stage to calm down the soldier

[collapse]
>. She is the very boring character that's finally discarded but developed into malignant male MC, 400 ch. Later! This author's style is also applied to some minor and insignificant events too. ---

Some flies in the oil. After Ch. 500, the author (has to?) uses the conflict between China (Federation of Huxia) and Japan (Sunset Empire) and USA/EU (Caesar Empire) as the background (to conform to China government's "suggestion" to novel writers). Bear this in mind and enjoy the rest.

---

Last, the human in this novel lives upto 150-200 year old. The MC is starting from in-uterine fetus, and developing almost day by day. So in the early arc, it's something like manga novel for kids. However, later it become gundam for early teenager, school fighting for the late teenager, war for the grown-up, wuxia for the adult.

BTW, unlike other reincarnation novel, there is reason in this novel : why she was dead; why able to reincarnate & become Mary Sue.

Last word : the novel is not short. Do not expect the good reasons in the first few hundred chapters. A book should not be judge by its cover.

As someone who keeps up with the raws to the most current release (and is also the original translator), this series is something I'd definitely recommend.

A few things first, every chapter and every event has it's relevance to the story. It's a very well plotted out novel that knows where it's going. However, the issue is that most english readers can only keep up with the current translation release, which might warp people's perception of the novel.

The author is the kind of person who reveals the setting as the story... more>> goes along. Thus at chapter 100, the amount of setting you'll have is actually very small and mainly centered around what Ling Lan knows. The author's not the kind of person who feels it necessary to bog down the reader with immediate detail on everything, but she does like to sprinkle in a few things that will show up in the future. I guess the best way to describe how the story flows is like a game; a lot of information is intentionally obscured until it finally has plot relevance.

Don't assume that you can just skip chapters either, because the novel isn't built on episodic events. Every single one of the chapters has it's intention and meaning. Every chapter is meant to further the plot, explain a bit of the setting through other characters, and/or develop side characters. The really isn't much filler.

Anyway, if you like a good, intellectual, or just fun time, I do suggest reading this novel before making any hasty judgements. The story is constantly punctuated by Ling Lan's own brand of humor and is really quite good. Outside of some confusion with names, this series is pretty easy to follow with machine translation too (if you really can't wait for official translations to come out).

This novel is pretty much "OK" but there some things I don't like at all:

Spoiler
  1. Hand speed,
  2. Virtual space,
  3. AI companions,
  4. The Custom Great DAO,
  5. The MC need to pretend to be a boy because she would be left without his father military benefits.
  6. The father of the MC being "dead" and the plot to kill him.
  7. The AI controlled guided missile called "The newbie killer" (do you see the problem with this right? I hope you are not blind? Do I have to elaborate with this?)

Spoiler

1 - Using your hand speed to control mechas would only happen if were to be inside a game, inside a competitive gaming scene, where using AI that would play for you to be illegal and over all pointless, as it is a game meant for humans against humans.

When you could put out an army of mechas controlled by AI that would overrun the enemy, that don't need to be trained over 18 years, and would offer a constants performance the moment they are born, would not get psychically tired, then, even before the enemy could take 18 years to train ONE new generation of mechas pilots, their capital would had being destroyed by mechas controlled by AI. The hand speed BS is "Not OK"

2 - The virtual space is only use as a training space, but it is also a world on its own, where spoiler alert you can also die inside it, well at least your mind, a well known problem, and yet the pots are in every household and every one with an universal internet red where you can move between planets very far away of each other (with not lag I remain you), and nobody think about this "problem", so the virtual world it is not safe but everyone pretends it is until "uh oh" someone is dead and there is not "defense" against that, if only...

Leaving aside that for now, when the MC goes to the planet were "Anakin" is located (you know who, his mecha panther partner), in this virtual space the MC enters a mecha store where you could buy a mecha with your credit car (amazing right?), do I need you to remain you mechas are regulated up the ass and you can't just walk into a stored and buy a mecha?, and the novel never says if he is buying a virtual mecha or a real one ? then if he can buying is a virtual mecha what it is the point ? mechas are not some kind of game for kids to play with it, they are real weapons for the army, and training pilots for the army it is real serious matter, this makes the whole virtual space look just like a big game where everyone, and I mean every one and their mothers go to play with mechas, there is nothing else to do but mecha mecha mecha mecha, see how many times I said mecha ? btw as a side note "gamers" can also help military personnel to complete "missions" inside this "virtual space".

In resume the novel doesn't know if it is wants to be a game in a virtual space, or a real world were they are at war with another world, well why you would care about that, when you are inside a virtual space playing with your mechas and improving your hand speed, why bother with real wars when you can carry on fake wars in the real space too, after all the real/virtual space is in not shape of form different for the real world, heck when mechas are "damaged" or take "damage" they need to be "repaired" like a game. taking damage inside a training is "ok" but having to repair your mecha when you are outside your training so you can continue training haha, see if you can find that outside a "game", making this virtual game space just "Ok" I can take it it is just game but I am sure it will be not "just a game" later on.

3 - So AI companions or bio-something, they had come with the AI that was granted by GOD Author, they are the personal trainers for the MC, making her so much so op beyond every one expectation, and without everyone realizing it, all this inside her own private personal virtual space, why this bio-something companions are so kind and started to feel emotions for the first time in the short? lives?, well because the MC it is so cute? nup, but because the MC has insane level of tolerance and talent, and perseverance, she never quits, that's what make them "care". I would be real here, if the author wanted to make the MC special then it should had make it special not by giving a overwhelming perseverance that would make the bio-something-companions like her, I doubt they bi0-something has never meet anyone with good perseverance.

What I mean by this ? well by now the MC is 10 years old, and has "friends" I dare to said, the bio-something-companions care more about her, that the MC cares about her "friends" and not taking them seriously and only looking at then are "children" playing with mechas, bio genetic enhanced children at that by the way, that are no way less smart than her or have less perseverance than hers, making her "spacial" trait and the thing that moved number 1, 9, 5 "moved" to tears and concerned about her, making them just something "Ok".

4 - The Custom great DAO, Author "I need to make the MC overpowered but I don't want to make it too overpowered with the most powerful thing, that's I know!" and we get a "Custom" Great DAO, that the MC needs to develop on her own... that's "Ok" until you realized, the motivation of the MC is.... "having babies!" What? Why?, well because she is a woman, and as a woman she only know how to get married and have babies, a bunch of those to take please!, "i am so smart" the author thought, "What s*x would you want your baby Miss?", "Make it... Random".

Then what about her mother? she didn't go thorough out the same hardships as the MC and had a nice healthy baby with S grade potential? now I ask of you, what comes first, the chicken of the egg? why not just adopted one? nup she had a better plan, her plan? well pushing down people for their seed, uusing her strenght, so she needs to become strong enough. I dared to said the motivation of the MC is so cheap and can be solve so easily without so much problems, but no, it is survival of the fittest! now, a war for having the best baby, babies everyone, everyone wants to have those right?.

oh right a Male seed is the one that gives the fetus 99.999999999% of

their true potential!, Females? they are just furnaces, a babies generator machine that you put some seed in, great message there author, by the way if 10 thousand years into the future we can not even choose or change the s*x of people, but we can create premium magic tubes that make us move faster than the speed of sound and are capable to leave after images, then there is something wrong with how the technology has advance.

I know you are read a lot because you are reading this and I like to write a lot, and I think you know that survival of the fittest it is not the survival of the strongest, even the strongest dies if they can't adapt to the changes of their environment, a population with a low amount of genetic diversity will die out if it can't adapt to their environment. This can be a mute point if you consider that 10 thousands years into the future humans can very well control their genetic and become strong (but not their s*x or body constitution for piloting a mecha), but then why not just make everyone strong with those magic tubes

and conquer the whole universe? Not, we can't have that, we can't have female pilots! they can't handle G force, or more like D force, NO EVEN BETTER why not called C force, if you catch my drift haha (so disgusting joke, I am sorry about that)

Well because humans still doesn't know what make the people "strong" nor they know what being strong is? After all, what it is the objective of the human race? Multiply and conquer their environment using the resources they have at hand, but no, if you are weak you are at the mercy of the strong, greedy and powerful!. Then again why would the strong and powerful care about everyone else? haha, let me tell you a secret, if the powerful are always "bad" then how did she make any friends that are also with powerful backgrounds? should not they be also bad? What about how the humans spanned thought out the universe?, if it is the survival of the individual strongest then why everyone else is there? What about the war? why are countless planets with other countless people just living their normal everyday lives without the greedy and powerful bothering them? and making then stand in with their two hands every day at 1 pm for their own amusing?

What about the great custom dao? did you forget about that? this is the great DAO point after all, if you forgot about that then my job here is done, onto the next point.

5 - The MC need to pretend to be a boy: No, she doesn't need to be pretend to be a boy, she is a boy, and she doesn't know how to be a girl, being a boy is the author just being silly and to have something to attract more readers into the novel, the novel as it stands is good enough without the MC being forced into a boy, either way being force to be a boy only works when you are not 10 thousands years into the future may I remain you, where may as well not being any difference between female and males, with that kind of technology.

As for the father military benefits not going to his own child (and I don't mean if it is boy or a girl, I mean when their family stepped with another hidden plot twist for the future aka baby boy number 2, you know "luke you have a sister", is the author not being happy with a 200 chapters novel but a 5 thousands one, heck why stop there 10 thousands years into the future will get the end!), the military benefits are by law theirs, and not something they can't take away becouse the MC is a gurl, forcing the MC pretend to be a boy so they can have them is like I said to have more drama, and I already told you this is just to have more plot twist and what not (here is a secret, a Web novel can be changed as you read them, cool right? I bet you didn't know that don't you)

If such thing were to truly happen, the government would had being well aware that such things are happening very often, maybe too often, and would make their own LOYAL doctors check the baby s*x and to not let their own family tell you "well yes sir, yest this is a totally a boy and I am not lying to you, now give me a ton of money", No government would be that s*upid, to put a rule "you can not be a girl to get this big fat check" then, never ever even bother to check the s*x, how many cases there had being in the past for the government not get a clue!, do you think the MC it is the first girl being force to being a boy? HECK NO!, I bet we will find in the future the MC will find another case like her a sister to who to hang and talk girly stuff, but why spoil the fun right boys?.

If you argue "But they use their own machine to check for the s*x in the beginning" a machine can be tricked, a physical check is needed to be made by a doctor, and even then if you can argue you can change a girl into a boy physically then what it is the point of having only boys being pilots? when there are boys that can't make into pilots either, discriminating woman pilots is pointless at this point. see! it is the future you can do what every you want about genetics and body constitution and what not.

Oh right, one more thing, remember when MC was a day student because her mother was afraid that she stayed full day they would find she was girl? well f*ck that!, lets go camping for 6 months to another planet, I am not making this out, I think the author just forgot about that for plot convenience. don't you worry, the author would find a way to allow for that in the future.

6 - The father of the MC being "dead", a God Pilot..., the youngest and most promising pilot..., most talent most courageous, most handsome pilot, puff gone, just like that, due the Greedy and Corrupt Government Officials, yeah right, and nobody knows he has a son, no wait just a few people know about that, yeah right, not in a million years chance this is happening, I would believe he fought another GOD-Level pilot and lost but this method of having the father go missing because a hidden plot, yeah it is not happening, the only reason for this is to have the MC go weary to her surroundings and not believe in anyone, and always be in fear of being watched out by the military, and that bring us the "i want to go low profile" kind of personality motive, then again she wants to be free and strong to push a male and make babies, and life her life as she wants and not being restricted but restricting others with her strength, for what else her strength would be used then?, eh do I need to remain you there billions of billions of people that are just living their every day normal lives? no?, well MC has to be strongest will to live free, everyone else is not living free, everyone else is a s*ave that doesn't want to raise and broke away from their chains of oppression called THE MAN!.

Oh right, she forgot she is rich and with access to with the best resources in the capital planet of the federation, but not everyone else is just too unwilling, if they truly wanted they could do as those peerless genius, because you know every has peerless genius inside them, and if they don't then they just need to put what they lack of talent with effort!, yup MC just want to live free and without restrictions and avenged her dead father, that's a blood debt! that needs to be paid.

Her mother? well she just wasted her life living as a woman, what about her life in the military?, shhh don't tell her that, she would be sad about it. (but that's the only way for woman to meet with strong powerful man right? for their seed! remember the man seed gives 99.99% of the baby potential long life)

7 -

The AI controlled guided missile called "The newbie killer": haha I knew you where waiting about this point don't you? no need to be anxious, funny thing about this is that makes the WHOLE MECHAS MECHAS MECHAS, and HAND SPEED sooooooo pointless that it make me laugh when I got to this part.

You have a weapon that needs to be piloted by humans using their "hand speed" and a simple AI GUIDED MISSILE, that cost you a fraction of the mecha, that can bring down those expensive machines, very efficiently at that, and it is called "newbie killer", that works with little to no human intervention HAHAHAHAHA, OMG this author like to shoot himself into the foot so hard. Why not... why not just called it "plot killer" and end the novel right there?

Dear reader, if you are wondering what this is all about, let me tell you, if you have a weapon that could bring a mecha, something that cost you billions and worse kill the pilot that costed you 18 years of harsh training and expensive resources, what do you think will happen? you would be filled with those missiles up the ass as soon was you were spotted in the enemy radar, you would not have time to say good bye to your love ones.

Now now, lets move to the AI GUIDED part of the missile, you are telling that, 10 thousands years into the future, you can have a guided missile that can bring down mechas very easily if they are not careful (and can be mistake with any other type of guided weapon of short range plasma shot), but the mechas, the all powerful MECHAS that can't have remotely controlled, can't be piloted by girl and

only have a silly half backed worthless AI assistant with little to no use, and presets (presents (macros) that nobody knows about or how to use, but the MC of course knows, you know, if you thought MC advantage was not strong enough), making the mechas full dependent in their all mighty and mythical hand speed? and their third leg dangling between their legs, well sir, I take my hat off, I can't say anything bad more about those mechas.

[collapse]

Overall review Ok of an Banana.

PD: Number 4 for best AI in any web novel ever 10000 years of a Mecha.

Mecha, Mechas, Mechas.

Unique and interesting indeed, only problem is the author re-structure words and sentences on chapters to fill into other chapters, its not really much of a problem but it becomes glaringly obvious on later chapters, you can easily skip 3-5 sentences even paragraphs and you wont miss anything from the plot..i mean they even have 10 chapters for a single enemy confrontation which can be easily summarize into 4-5. In conclusion, a unique and interesting novel ruined by greed.

Oh also there should be a shonen tag included there. Felt like... more>> im reading a japanese manga aimed for kids <<less

BEFORE YOU SCROLL FURTHER, I ONLY HAVE ONE ADVICE FOR YOU ALL HESITATING TO READ THIS NOVEL! READ TO CHAPTER 100!

The reason why you are still scrolling or reading the reviews is that you are unsure whether reading this would be worth your precious time. Since all the other reviews already talked about the ups and downs of this novel, I find that the only way to convince you to read it is by giving you a number.

READ TO CHAPTER 100. At that point you would have a overall feel... more>> of the novel and most of the explanations are already explained. If webnovel says you have to sign up, just search: "It's not easy to be a man after travelling to the future." on google. Most websites provide free and accessible chapters.

The explanations may be long, but are VERY INFORMATIVE AND IMPORTANT. The fact that there are so many descriptions proves that the author spent time thinking of this story, so whenever someone complain about the explanations being long makes me feel distressed for the author who put so much effort for the readers. As for those who said the story is too vague or not explained well enough, I want to virtually throttle them. If the author explain e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g from society structure to mecha science to government system, then even a hundred essays would not be enough. Plus some questions get answered along the way. The author is not dumb enough to explain everything in the beginning and overwhelmn readers. If after reading past 100 chapters you still don't appreciate the plot and story, then feel free to drop it. I respect your decision.

ENDURE! READ TO CHAP 100! YOU CAN DO IT! If you actally enjoy it, yay! I have read past chapter 4000 in the raws and I guarantee you that it will only get better and better and better! The story would not drop in excitement as you might expect when MC gets too op, it really just gets more and more intriguing as she becomes stronger with comrades together rather than alone. My favorite is when she kills them without giving the villians a chance to "talk it out but secretly prepare to flee or heal"

For those that want romance, don't worry, there will be romance. But it will make you laugh and cry! Some people might not like the guy, but once you get used to it, you will find how funny and weird and refreshing the romance is compared to others. NO HAREM OR REVERSE HAREM! I PROMISE! Dropping such a good story just because the romance is not to your liking is pretty sad.

Yea smart scheming kids seems pretty unrealistic but at least the author acknowledged it and gave an explanation for it. Some novels just straight up gloss over things like that. I see how some critiques talk about the science of mecha being off but dude, the setting is far in the future so you can't really say the future science is wrong according to science logic today. This is a fantasy story after all, not a university science report. Even if the science is wrong, I will still continue to read it due to the fact the author put so much effort and thought to describe and create a new "science" for the sake of the story.

Please see for yourselves before making any judgements. The worst that can happen is missing out on what could be the best read of your life, at least that was almost the case for me. <<less

I've finished reading this till the last available chapter for the raw. Since the author seems to be on hiatus now, I don't think I would be getting anymore update anytime soon...???

Now let's get into what I have to say about this novel.

First and foremost, I think we all need to bear in mind what kind of situation the MC was in since I noticed that there's lots of people who seemed to fail to PROPERLY UNDERSTAND.

1. The MC lived her life as a male since she was reborn into... more>> her new life (20++ of living), as all of us knows already. And living as a female among all the masculine guys, being treated as male soldier, and also have been taking hormonal suppression all her life, you can't expect her to be all flowery and rainbows. In our time, I guess we can say that she's a tomboy or maybe the hardcore (?) level of tomboy.

2. I noticed that lots of people have been complaining about how the real gender of the MC haven't been reveal even up to this point. I just couldn't help but wonder if they perhaps actually skipped some parts that could explain why this happened.

Spoiler
[collapse]

  1. Her family and the MC actually already planned to make her withdraw from the public eyes so that she can regain the life she should have as a girl.
  2. But something happened that made it impossible so the MC had to continue to attend an academy for male soldiers-to-be.
  3. MC made a deal to continue living as a male with her mother just for a few years then she would be her female self, but because she couldn't leave her companions and felt the need to guide them more, so she didn't keep that promise.
  4. Later on, she herself said that, leaving this kind life wouldn't do. She love her life now. So you can guess what happened.
  5. Even if she wanted to escape her life as a male, she couldn't. And I think this is the most important point. Who is she? She's a high ranking official in the military. Who's her father? The people's hero and the threat to the others of similar ranks and is someone they kept their eyes on to scheme against. Then, you think a person like this could just easily leave her current life? Or could she easily reveal her real gender? Their whole family would be dead first. This could only happens, just as the MC herself thought, once she become strong enough no one could mess with her or her family. Only then people wouldn't be able to do anything even if they knew that she and her family had been the deceiving the whole country and military.
So I think, if you're expecting for some kind of shoujo like romance where the ML would be ecstatic to know that the one he love is actually a girl after accidentally barge into her showering, or being in that situation with any other males, then I think you've found the wrong genre.

If something like this actually happened or if the MC just suddenly decided to reveal her gender to the ML or anyone elses for that matter, I would actually drop the novel because being a major general at her young age, I would think that she didn't deserve that title with how s*upid she act.

Fortunately, she's smart enough to be able to keep her biggest secret, deserving all the boasting of her intelligence and IQ.

So yeah, read the tags before you proceed to read.

Oh and plus, remember that the MC isn't exactly an OP character. She's where she is now only thanks to all the ridiculously hard work she put in to the point of being a so-called OP as some people might says.

There's moments where she almost died, countless of time, just to be this sort of omnipotent being everyone around her viewed her as. She's hardworking. And you expect her to be a mediocre female soldier in disguise who live a normal shoujo life in romance? Even the laziest one would be strong given her situation.

So, all in all, despite some of the questionable aspects that I myself noticed, like how the mecha works in this novel, which I think could be ignored and nothing big, this novel is the one I would say at the top in my list.

The MC Ling Lan is someone whom I really really love, and appreciate that the author had created her and successfully kept her character in consistent with greatly remarkable growth.

So yeah. I just hope people would look over some the weaknesses and just focus on the Ling Lan herself. <<less

Actually this isn't 1/5 at all. I just want to lower the rating a little bit.

Now why?

First of all, I felt cheated. This story is basically a scam. I'm so angry and frustrated right now. I just want to warn all those readers who plan to read this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't imagine a female MC or you'll end up like me. Just imagine it as a BL or sth. (Not trying to downplay BL novels or anything but I actually am an avid yaoi reader lol so I actually... more>> LOVE BL but I wished someone told me that I should've read this like it was a BL so I won't get so turned off like this, ugh.) The MC is so manly af that it says on the novel that if you put him side by side with his daddy (WHO IS 40 sth already) and ask who is a girl between the two of them, then you could've mistaken the dad as the girl AND DEFINITELY NOT THE MC. This is because of those hormone surpressor that MC is taking since she was 10!! I've read some spoilers and in the raws (which is 1400+ already) and she still haven't revealed she's a girl yet!! Even the ML doesn't know she's a girl (remind you translated chapters are still at chapter 260+) So basically if you're expecting a grand reveal of her gender, IT'S NOT HAPPENING!! Even when they revealed her gender to her father was so anticlimatic. So if you want to enjoy this, just read as a BL where MC is the seme, okay? Cuz ML looks way more weak and feminine than her anyway. I'll try to refresh my mind for a few weeks then I'll continue reading this but NOW imagining it as a BL cuz this story is such a waste to not be finished reading. THE STORY WAS DEFINITELY INTERESTING AND I AM HERE FOR IT AND THE MC'S BAD-ASSNESS!! <<less

As of now, this is a great novel, and while it's a reincarnation story, the story is original in the fact that the MC gets reborn into a world where there are galactic wars, mechas and spiritual energy! So no massive déja-vu for now.

The translation is well done, no error that make you cringe, so thank you translator♥

Spoiler

The MC is a girl who died in her previous world because of having too much spiritual energy, she gets reborn in a sc-fi kind of world (mecha, federation,..) where her new father is lost in a war. To make sure she gets her rightful inheritence, her mother disguise her as a boy

[collapse]

I recommand it, since it's a very good story to read and not repetitif at all.

i just hope that there will be more chapters in the futur if possible!!! <<less

Okay, I've got to say this novel is one of my guilty pleasures.

The protagonist, Ling Lan, is absolutely an overpowered existence that satisfies every inch of my cravings for an unapologetically strong, badass female character that isn't shackled by romance. That in itself might turn off for some readers, so I would not recommend this story for people who want to see the protagonist suffer and grow slowly. Spoiler alert, you will see none of that. While Ling Lan might face trials along her journey to the top like every... more>> other protagonist, you as the reader know that she'll be able to overcome them no matter what and never eat a loss. This is one of the major charms and flaws of this story.

However, I do have to say that the trials she faces are fairly realistic and that there is always a force that is stronger than her — which is why even after 1000 or so chapters I'm still not bored (and I have to say I have the attention span of a goldfish). I also like the way she acknowledges the mistakes that she makes and remains relatively humble given her OPness. In the novel, Ling Lan even states that her companions are much more talented than she is, so she uses hardwork (albeit combined with her cheats) to try to be stronger. I feel like she's a very inspiring character. Reading about her really motivates you to be more proactive in your life as well!

As for the other characters, I like how many have their own distinct personalities and abilities. Despite the fact that there are literally so many Chinese names, you will eventually grow to remember all of them. Most of the characters that interact with Ling Lan are her teammates, and they just grow on you as you read on. The only thing about the characters in this novel is they all end up basically worshipping her or grudgingly respect her, but details, details. Characters that also seem insignificant make a comeback too, so that's nice (well, they don't say too insignificant for long I guess because the author drops way too many obvious foreshadowing hints lol). The author has a knack of incorporating many different characters and transitioning between the different arcs smoothly. On another note, the battle scenes in this novel are also written in surprising detail as well.

There's also a lot of elements in this novel that make it interesting like mecha piloting, combat skills, virtual worlds and entities, as well as almost "magic" abilities resembling those of cultivating novels (you'll see what I mean the characters reach domain stage).

Another flaw of the novel, as mentioned by many other reviewers, is the painfully obvious Chinese nationalism. In the story, the Chinese federation is the number one military faction and all the other factions are depicted as inferior with the exceptions of some stand out characters (but even then they are always beat). In addition, the author always makes sure to highlight how Chinese soldiers are the best because of how they choose the ruthlessly sacrifice themselves to hurt the enemy, how they're just so much more advanced and so on... It isn't that big of a deal to me because I just choose to ignore it, but I know that some people would definitely be bothered.

Despite all the flaws in this story, I still highly recommend it! Just know that it really caters to a certain type of audience haha. Suckers for an OP female protagonist come hither! <<less

Edit: I have increased my rating from 4 to 5 stars because this novel is SO DAMN GOOD, I particularly love the fact that "cannon-fodder" characters are portrayed as actual humans by the author. Instead of brainlessly running to their deaths, most go back to living their own lives (as any sane person would) , and some even undergo character development to return as better people!

Before readers start bashing me for inconsistency, I'll admit that the enemy empire is an exception. To justify the war and killing in this novel,... more>> the author decided to paint enemy soldiers as inhuman psychopaths who spout cheesy villainous lines before dying as literal cannon fodders, while the allied soldiers are noble and patriotic "white knights". But this is the only real problem I have with this novel, and war is definitely not the main focus of this story, so please please please give this novel (and my little review) a chance :3

Edit #2 (at chap 260) : Ling Lan is boss, Ling Lan is LIFE!! Really guys, don't quit just because the beginning is slow; everything after is so worth it! The last 100+ chaps were pure epicness. Who said male leads are the only ones who can look cool AF without relying on a single love interest??

Original review:

Not what I expected, but awesome nonetheless! The novel description is kind of misleading, because this is mostly a growing up + cultivation story with the romance coming in much later.

At the beginning, the plot isn't super interesting, but it's good enough to engage most readers. The characters feel very comfortable to stick around with, and solid world building means that we are integrated into the protagonists' new environment without difficulty. Although the story might have a slow progression, the author is just setting up a great foundation for future epicness (and what most of us came to see, our FL soaring over others in a male-dominated world!)

As other reviews have said, there were some problems with the sci-fi setting, and blatant Chinese nationalism i.e. Caricature of the Japanese. But trust me, this doesn't have much of an effect on the overall story unless you're highly bothered by it, so I only docked one star. <<less

This novel has certainly panned out to be top-shelf material. Simultaneously fresh and trope-defying, the read has been enjoyable through-and-through. The other reviews do well to outline what tropes I am likely referring to. However, the pace is slower compared to most light novels, and this has come at the cost of slightly less action. In turn, the novel does well to thoroughly develop a diverse cast of characters that is, in my opinion, reminiscent of Douluo Dalu. The romance is virtually nonexistent at this point in the novel, and... more>> while the ML's identity has been hinted, I do not expect any development in this area until the characters age further.

I do recommend this novel; I believe it to be among the best in the female MC tag.

A quote from a previous reviewer:

"Then my last complaint is how the story forces you to read each chapter carefully because if you miss one chapter due to being bored, you won't know what on Earth is going on."

...

Pardon?

That is how reading works. You cannot just skip chapters and expect there not to be consequences. Are you daft?

I am far too old for this nonsense.

This is a story of an OP female protagonist, who "struggles" with her new identity in the sci-fi new world.

Honestly, this description is putting this novel toooo nicely !
Though I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning chapters but slowly I came to realise just how hypocritical MC she is.

I don't see any point in her life where she actually 'struggles' on 'her own'.

She can do almost everything with her cheat (lil 4 n system) or because of miraculous coincidence... more>> (just toooo many DAMN coincidence).
At this point I don't evem know why she faces challenges? Just send your lil 4 to the ememy kingdom or hack the higher militry base and find all the answers!?

Also, I must really applaud the author for his shamelessness to dump every psychologically negative events on to her strong willpower. Mind you a person who has lived her whole life on the hospital bed and has not seen the real world cannot have such mental capacity. Rather their mind would definitely break under the trainings she so claims to have gone through.

Every one in the way of 'BOSS LAN' is either a blindly faithful believer or a bad person who plans to harm her. There may be some in the neutral faction but they all accept her as very strong or fear her.

And after every other paragraph the author tries to remind us how she is ' very cold and ruthless, unfeeling and decisive'.

REALLY!? DECISIVE!? I call that recklessness!
She is so quick to dump all the injuries or even possible death chances which her team members might suffer on to the notion that 'this is a good chance of tempering'.

Spoiler

She leads everyone for grand-melee battle, she takes over the spaceship, then during the Caesar operation of fledgling annihilation she leads everyone to battlefield.

A bunch of amateurs (Except her own team of which I don't want to comment on) are fighting against professional fighters (who have been soaked in blood) and STILL none of them dies! *applaud * The other countries are nothing more then idiots that can't even defeat a bunch of 9th graders! At least make the fights believable.

[collapse]
Also every single time she breaks the rule to do these unbelievable things rather than reprimanding, all the officers have appreciation in there eyes.

Give. Me. A. Break!

The first code when going to a battlefield or fight is DISCIPLINE! Ling lan rarely listnes to the commanders... similarly even in her team, the team members (qi long) often breaks the orders.

Also a side thought...
Spoiler

The empire is depicted as japan and they are basically very evil. (haha and it seems the only thing the author knows about japan is the word 'baka'?)

Except china every other empire or country is either a cannon fodder or evil. It boggles me just to think... how the hell can peace be obtained, there should have been a world-war... my bad universe- war ongoing.

[collapse]

This novel could have had more humorous events with MC being a girl but oh well ? can't help much! <<less

ive seen some of the reviews saying the MC acts just like a guy and I find that dumb af. Its like saying this type of personality can only exist in men/women thus if they act feminine they are immediately classified as a woman and if they act masculine in a woman body they are immediately a man. If you cant even differentiate the difference between personality and gender you should stop reading fiction and learn some basic knowledge.

As much as I thought that the novel had a somewhat interesting start, it quickly became more or less the same as almost all CN novels, uninspired, boring and redundant. This kind of story has been seen in so many variations that the only way to make it good is to create realistic and believable characters and give the world building some thought to make it realistic.

Both is more or less absent, while the characters aren't really bad, they are also not really good. If you take into consideration that... more>> the majority of people the protagonist is interacting with are children, you might guess that they will behave like children and even with increased intelligence they will still be somewhat naive, but nope, they are instantly scheming against each other the way you usually see it in reincarnation novels that are set in ancient china. There is barely any difference between adults and children (in terms of intellect) in the story and that's just for the sake of convenience.

But that would still be acceptable if the whole world wouldn't be so horribly awful and unrealistic. Science is completely absent:

-The protagonist is already training when she's about 1-2 years old, which is simply not possible and training that early won't make you stronger but rather result in long term dammage for the body, since the body has to properly develop and just training for ridiculous amounts of time won't make it better

-Mechas make no sense. Sorry for the mecha fans, but that's a fact. Modern weapons would obliterate any mecha, it's improved mobility gives it zero advantage against missiles, projectiles or beam weapons. Especially if you consider that we're in a distant future which basically means that we have a sci-fi story. AI would pilot these mechas far better than any human or rather achieve singularity before that, so "Littly four" is a poor excuse for having no idea about modern computer science.

Long story short, the story is riddled with inconsistency and the thoughts of the protagonist just don't feel realistic or convincing. Science is basically nonexistent and the whole setting could have been invented by a 13-year old. <<less

I think giving it a 5 is overrating this novel.

A few reasons as to why:

    1. While it has some really interesting parts, it drags down sometimes as well. This due to the writing being a bit bloated/fillery at times.
    2. It feels too upbeat and easy. Some people like the "fast pace", but... even in the supposedly more tense parts, I didn't feel much tension. This is not only caused by the writing style, also by the characters;
    3. Adding onto the tension, the writer could do a better job writing emotion into the novel, similarly to the previous point;
    4. The world building isn't... very... detailed.
If you think about it, so far we went through about 15 years of her life. This took 230 chapters, but it probably could've been 150. To me, this is a black mark. This is exacerbated when you read one single chapter per day instead of bingeing. Some people say it is fast-paced... it kinda is and isn't at the same time.

That aside, it still is pretty good:

    1. It offers a few unique gimmicks (female crossdressing MC, the instructors in the learning space, little four, and some other plot-related things). A lot of people pick up the novel due to the gimmicks;
    2. The characters and their interactions are fun. There is a limited amount of character development;
    3. For people liking power tripping MC's: she doesn't do it often, but she is extremely OP. This increases the fun factor to me.
Now, a little bit about the plot. So far, the novel has some direction, but it's not like there is a very clear goal. There is no burning hatred or clear desire. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since the main character is only just growing up, but this needs to change later on in the novel. If the other aspects of the novel were better, then this slight lack of direction would be less apparent. I hope the writer slowly changes a few things later on in the novel. It needs some darkness, some change of pace maybe after she graduates?

TL;DR:

Right now, the novel reads reads a little like a roller coaster: fun characters, interactions and events, but slightly out of balance and without clear direction.

I hope the writer changes the atmosphere and pace up little bit. Or improves on what it is.

This Belle, is different from common female protagonist novels you have read out there! It's story is unique for me because, I haven't read a novel about a female MC + Mecha. Most Mecha operator stories are usually males, also from the story flow, common female protagonist stories involved cat fights, family struggle, chasing or escaping from the ML. It truly live up to the expectation from the title itself, not deviating from it.

This is one of my new favorites on Novel Updates. A sick girl is reborn into a healthy body far into the future. Unfortunately, her father died, and she has to masquerade as a boy in order to inherit his military benefits.

Spoiler

Following birth is training and measuring of her combat abilty. This gives the sense of planning for the future much like a crafting or strategy-type fantasy, where the reader's expectations build over time.

Some characters attempt social maneauvering to get the better of the heroine, similar to quite a few Chinese historical romances. However, this isn't the focus of the story. It never gets to the point where everyone is out to get her. Several characters are amusing.

Action scenes appear but have clear endings and don't dominate the plot. There are also some descriptions of cultivation practices.

Expecting a harem in the future.

[collapse]

Overall the novel has a varied plot which prevents the reader from getting bored. The mecha setting is also a breath of fresh air.

Though the main character is strong, she doesn't entirely cross the line into becoming overpowered. She even has a weakness.

The slow age progression might annoy some people. The world building is also a bit illogical at times. I don't think this pulls the story down though. <<less
