Rated it 5 stars purely because I've enjoyed it so far.
Spoiler

Now the story as everyone else has explained is about how the grimoire 'Gluttony' attached itself to a student named Theodore Miller who has nearly no magic sensitivity but is extremely studious to the point of having as much knowledge as some professors at his school. To learn more about 'Gluttony' I feel "mrttao" explains it best so I won't just re-write what they already stated.

The story so far is enjoyable but don't expect a major enemy right at the start like in other novels. At this point in time there is no clear direction on what the MC's goals are in the future and honestly that's okay in my opinion. As of right now the MC is just taking one step at a time and trying to find a steady way to keep himself alive because 'Gluttony' will consume the MC if it's not fed books.

Overall, I do suggest reading this novel just don't expect fights left and right. It's simply a story about a clever kid, emphasis on the word KID, trying to be a magician so that he can explore the world of magic.

I read this novel quite a while ago, so I don't remember most of the stuff. I do remember this novel being entertaining to read. The MC was pretty op and the rise to his power was pretty fun to read. There aren't any young master and face slapping, or any that I remember. There's harem, but it isn't the harem like Chinese harem. The MC's women aren't just there for decoration, but they actually matter. There's a decent amount of time the MC needed to be saved by his... more>> women. The only problem I have was how the author rushed the ending. What could've been 700-1000 chapters became 400 chapters. The author really rushed the last 100 chapters. <<less

dont remember much, I was near the end of the novel (i think) when I dropped it because-

So, the MC gets some kind of powerup

cant remember what kind

... more>> some "Transcendence" type bullsh*t im guessing?

and it goes from main female lead romance, cant remember but there was some "Fire/Red??" to harem with characters I cant remember

he gets his power up and pulls full fantasy f*ckboy mode and straight up sleeps with some random women that I cant remember because IM STRONG MAN, MAN SLEEPS WITH WOMEN and then basically shames the FL because she doesn't want MC to have a Harem, I have some vague memory of him promising something towards her in regards to romance, but I dont remember

i dont know, I read this while it was getting translated whenever that was and now im writing a review in 2022 because I keep seeing this book in lists and its annoyed me enough to "review" this <<less

Standard overpowered MCs are the norm but I like this novel.

He doesn't become instantly op as he usually has to search for new books, first 300 chapters are 5/5 but in the last 100 chapters, the story becomes dull, enough for me to drop it to 3 stars however one thing I like about this novel is the fact author gave it a proper ending, although it was a cliffhanger, I doubt there will be a sequel, although I dislike the fact that he didn't become independent and continued to... more>> work for the kingdom (becomes Meltor empire), he is given a position equal to the emperor and that kind of solves things (I still wanted him to become independent and form his empire but I guess he just wants to live with his family peacefully), I do understand why Sylvia and Ellenoa fell for him but I still have no clue why Veronica fell for him, other than this the writer cleared most loose ends.

Oh boy what can I say ? At the first half the story was gold and later til the ending is not very.... satisfying, got our first romance way too late but atleast it's very good. The plot is very well done but the biggest downside that the author decided to left out so many key characters, they either fall behind or get completely left out. So many potential story developing got cut off or abanddoned which left a very bad aftertaste, I always get the feeling that this novel... more>> could be more for the better but everytime... everytime that feeling got cut off it is frustrating. I Gave this 4 stars solely because the MC focusing and developing is so good, I truely want to give 2 stars due to so many other characters got their role cut short while they can be so much more but oh well, if you can live with that this novel is a rare gem to begin with. <<less

One of the best I have read.

Its only 400 chapters and plot moves at a decent speed so it does not get boring like other 1000+ chapter novels.

A very interesting and satisfactory read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. This novel may very well be average in many aspects, but I found it entertaining and a breath of freash air from others that I've recently tried reading. Moreover, it isn't even all that long so you don't lose anything by giving it a chance.

Lack of side characters developments a bit more romance would be better, and a lot of unprecedented f*cking time skip bothered me a lot.

The Ending was bittersweet, It does Not! Give you the sense of a fulfillment after being so attached to the story

It even forgets one of the MC main lovers!

like f*cking hell that was not a happy ending! It just gave you the MC lovers will die because of aging and time and MC will be all alone in the end..

Decent, but too cookie cutter and certain parts are lacking. Though it’s not like the author did any mistakes, but they did not do anything too crazy either. Even then, the main mystery is basically glossed over and became nothing too unique. Lots of potential, but just ended up being okay. The writing falls off as our MC gets more and more op.

MC is like a wood block, he refuses to have conversations with people. No idea if it's because the convos take place off screen (but the characters don't seem to know because when we see them next they act as if they haven't spoken to him in years.. So wtf??), also he's as dumb as a bag of f*cking rocks. When he goes and changes his appearance to adventure he doesn't use his best magic because people would know who he is.. But how? People aren't omniscient, nobody outside... more>> his kingdom even saw him use that magic and even if they did they would assume it's the normal not special type of magic missile, it takes master level mages that specifically interacted with the original creator of the magic to even recognize the difference between them.. Ffs. Also.. Romantic subplot? My f*cking ring finger romantic subplot, there's nothing romantic in this whole f*cking novel, the MC ignores/ refuses to talk to any of his "harem" members, the only person he treats even remotely well is his master, rest of the people he either ignores or treats them like distant acquaintances. After half the novel he makes up his mind to grow some balls and face them however when he gets back from his trip he turns into a virg*n again, completely ignoring everything and acting like an autistic 5yr old <<less

So I finished the whole novel and gotta say, it wasn't as bad as the reviews make it out to be. It's a very cliche hero in a fantasy swords + magic world with an interesting premise. The amount of casual gifts of OPness was a little on the ridiculous side, but remember, this is a cliche hero story, not some bloody isolationist training arc.

I will admit, the pacing was way too fast. Like, if Theo isn't saving the world he's... Wait, no nvm, it's a time skip to when... more>> he needs to save the world again. So yeah, very very fast.

I saw some reviews flaming the politics of the story, and now that I think about it, it was a little nonsense. I didn't really notice too much since I don't think about politics much. I kinda just subconsciously attributed it to some mideval magical kingdom kink.

Worldbuilding was a tad shallow. I don't think I can remember the food or clothing or special customs of anywhere. This is both good and bad since sometimes I just think of it as word filler, but also it makes for the readers who really want immersion to dislike it. As for me, I don't really care too much about specific kingdom customs so it didn't really bother me.

... And then Gluttony, the possibly most OP thing that the MC ignored. Well, I wouldn't say he ignored it but it just felt like a lot of it was ommited. Mostly:

Spoiler

Gluttony has the power to answer any one question a day everyday after eating but the most we see it used was to make Vince breakthrough in his language. All other instances of this were obsolete or just no remembered by me. When Gluttony does need to answer a question for the specific situation the MC is in, it's not part of this daily quota.

[collapse]

As for the ending:

Spoiler

I really liked the ending, at least the part after Wrath. Wrath itself just seemed like a last minute final boss for the sake of being a final boss. Just a robot doing it's job. The battle was anticlimactic with just Theo going, "I can do this!" And Wrath going "Calculating... Nope I can counter you" And back and forth. As for the final power up, that was literally bs nakama power but idk what I'd expect from a hero cliche story. Everything after Wrath was great in my opinion. He fights Gluttony (I wouldn't consider him a final boss, but it was technically the final battle) which was sad since Gluttony was like his best friend. Then Theo just living a mortal life with a somewhat ambiguous ending but at least looping the book title was fine. Nice clean finish. Didn't need any more info.

5* was for enjoyment, since I couldn't feel whatever massive plot holes everyone else felt on my first read. <<less

In the beginning it was really fun to read. This was one of the first novels that I've seen where the main character
Spoiler

tells people about his hidden treasure or power

[collapse]

The girls all have somewhat likeable personalities and the mysteries were very interesting and made me want to learn more about it. At the end however, it seems as if everything progressed really fast and it was no longer the novel that I liked in the beginning. I like that the author made use of many nationalities and didn't stick to only one region. This is the most multinational novel I've ever seen.

Weak downtrodden MC, acquires unique power/ability and with hard work... blah, something, blah. A premise I've seen countless times in material aimed at young boys, but this time in a slightly more mature tone (for the most part). Ancient civilizations, magic academy, quests and countless thrilling battles that are found in countless fantasy adventures. With a Swordsman x Mage system similar to "Mushoku Tensei", many aspects from "Full Metal Alchemist" and a crap ton of Norse & Greek mythology.

I still enjoyed reading this novel, with rivaling nations and its intense... more>> relationships between certain characters. However what should be a mature harem, feels annoyingly childish, from time to time and the world building ends up becoming horrendously lazy. A lot of it just feels like wasted potential, because I really enjoyed the MC's thirst for magic in this non-Isekai world. <<less

Overall I have to say it's a lot of fun, though has some problems. I definitely enjoyed it, enough so to warrant a 4 star rating, which is WELL above my average for novels, though definitely not close to the top. I can recommend if you're in the mood for something good but not great, though it's probably closer to a Japanese LN than a WN.

I'll get the bad out of the way first. This series does a lot well but also lacks a lot, especially regarding a shift in... more>> tone in the later chapters making it almost feel like a different series. There last few arcs also feel very contrived, with even more Deus Ex Machina than early chapters (throughout the series it's explained he's basically a hero akin to those from stories, so he's basically fated to succeed and save everyone). The whole problem in later arcs, especially the last one, makes me angry because I genuinely think it's a fairly good series and it felt like I could no longer say that. Throughout the series I was also disappointed in the lack of characterization of a lot of characters. A lot of characters felt very shallow, especially his female love interests. By and large they didn't feel like characters in their own right but just existing for the sake of having love interests for the main character. This wouldn't be as bad if not for my personally biggest issue with the series: the lack of "fluff". The book basically jumps from major fight/event to major fight/event, often skipping laying a lot of groundwork for making you invested in the characters and displaying who they are. This is probably the root cause of pretty much every issue I have above, and if not for this then this series might have been great.

The good is definitely good though. The action is very detailed and makes sense. It doesn't give the feeling of being contrived. Like I said above, the main character is basically a "hero" chosen by fate so you know he'll survive and win, saving everyone in the process. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, it's done fairly well here. There's very little fluff, meaning you don't get a hundred chapters describing how pale a girl's skin is and how that somehow makes them attractive. It definitely feels a lot more tight than most other webnovels I've read, more akin to a Japanese LN than a WN. Despite the tag, the protagonist is definitely not overpowered either in the fights, pretty much every fight he has leaves him close to death as he barely beats the opponent. There's definitely some early/mid chapters where he'll deal with a group of weaklings of a lower level, but those are like a few paragraphs every couple dozen or so chapters. <<less

TLDR; Dropped. Boring characters; Lack of detail

Set in your typical, nobles & magic fantasy world, our main character, Theo is considered a loser for being left back for 2 years. While his knowledge is top class, his inability to enter 3rd Circle due to his lack of magical talent has prevented him from graduating. By chapter 15, the only important characters appear to be MC and PV (Professor Vince), (maybe a couple others but they haven't been developed much yet) the only character who seems to view MC favorably.... more>> Every other character is your typical a**hole, at-odds-with-mc-for-some-reason character.

Of course this wouldn't be a problem if the characters weren't so boring. The MC basically has no close interactions aside from PV since everyone thinks he's a loser. So far these interactions have been mediocre at best and seem to have only reinforced "MC so smart. If only he had OP ability (/average)... (Which he gets)."

However, what bothered me the most was the lack of detail and explanations. The author kind of continues through the story without providing much detail. Some examples are:

  1. MC getting his ability. The reason is kind of acceptable I suppose but still a little bit unsatisfying. (Basically it's because MC is MC (dunno if it'll change later))
  2. Geass Contract. If you've read/watched Code Geass, Fate, or some other series you might be able to guess what the contract is, but the author doesn't go into great detail. Is it merely a legal instrument or are there things like consequences of death?
  3. School/Outside world. Maybe I didn't notice it but I have no idea where the academy is. Obviously it's prestigious but I don't have a good understanding of the kingdoms and its place in the world and among other academies.
This could develop into something somewhat decent but if it goes on as is, it's a no. It'd be more interesting if the author possibly gave the grimoire an actual personality. Overall, the boring characters and lack of detail is what's making me drop this. This might be an okay read for some but it wasn't for me. <<less

It has it's shortcomings, a lot of inconsistencies (some of them might be due to translation errors tho), few plot holes, and sometimes it's a cringefest, but other than that it's enjoyable enough especially if you don't really care and just want a read to busy up a boring evening. Oh and the ending is quite rushed but I guess you should pretty much expect that when picking up a Korean novel.

Well, this novel is very good but there are some things that left me very sad. The story unfolds well until chapter 350, Theodore is very moralistic and right I get angry but it is not something that scrub the novel. The problem is in the defilement, in serious me I leave a bad taste in my mouth, I want to cry

The world is built well enough, some ideas are somewhat intresting and it had way better potentian than what we got.

Two biggest issues are:

First, the story is kind bland there is nothing keeping you on the tip of the toes wondering "Whats next" or "How will he solve this mess" I often found myself distracted from the story just opening new tabs. To check reddit. NUF/NU and other sites. Which definitely isn't a good sign. (Tho this just my experience)

Second, Dialogues and interactions are cringy and really painful... more>> to read, I don't want to be bashing the author for this so it might be because KR doesn't translate well into English making it sound more cringy than it should but this was the biggest offender for me. There were times I couldn't read those interactions. Im pretty sure if someone rewrote this story with the same story except with new dialogues, it would be a lot better. <<less

3 stars... it's okay, but I kinda want to give this 2, 5 stars

The writing is plenty decent, not many plotholes, no illogically s*upid enemies/MC, and no repetitive plot. Alas the story comes out bland to me.

The base plot of grimoires and magic is pretty interesting, but the author seems to be having a hard time balancing the enemies with the MC power progress. At the beginning it felt okay, but as the story progress and the other grimoires start popping, you can feel how OP they're and will wonder... more>> why does gluttony has so little power. Also I don't really agree how a lot of crisis was solved through "3rd party" interference that seems like to come down because the author said so.

Continuing on that, for a 4oo chapters book, the novel felt sparse. Usually a short novel like this is plenty jam-packed with all the ideas crammed inside a short run. This kinda relate on how I felt with the balancing issue, if Gluttony was as OP as the others, the novel will probably end much shorter.

Well, it might not be the must picked novel, but it's decent, so 3 stars is okay. <<less

Great Korean web-novel for light reading. Emphasis on web novel: this is not written to imitate a grandiose printed epic. Characters and plots are defined to move the story along, and it is enough for the reader to understand the motivations of the MC. It is the story of the MC's progression as he utilized his plot armor gift, and how through it all his sense of self remains. Even the ending was about this.

Some readers rag on about the world building, but this isn't a novel that requires an... more>> atlas. Basic details are given just to set the stage, and that is sufficient for a web novel. Stories with a cheat device shouldn't get trapped in the minutia, otherwise you will just end up questioning the existence of the cheat device in the first place.

I feel some reviewers expect too much of the novel, perhaps my opinion is different as I read it all in two sittings instead of following a chapter-by-chapter translated release. The later part of the novel did feel rushed, after all we did expect 7 sins in total and the last few seemed to be resolved very quickly compared to the MC's struggles against the earlier ones.

I have to say though that compared to some other Korean stories, this one at least wrapped it all up nicely. If this was a printed book, I would close it after the last page and put it on my shelf with a smile. Maybe I would never read it again, but I liked what time I spent with it. <<less
