I Rely on Kisses to Clear Survival Games

Cheng Zhi Chu was pulled into an infinite stream of horror games. If he didn’t clear them, he would die.

But can someone tell him why others clear the games using violence and force but his method of clearing the game is by kissing the boss?!

Cheng Zhi Chu: I am a straight man. Even if I kill myself or am killed by monsters, I will not kiss the boss!

Boss: Be good. Kiss me and I’ll let you go.

Bai Yi had been trapped in the game for many years.

Rather than exploding in anger in the silence, he had turned crazy. And so…….he split himself. His soul was broken into many pieces and each of them became the boss in the games.

But, regardless of how the soul was split, from the beginning to the end there was one thing that didn’t change —–He, likes Cheng Zhi Chu.

Every fragment of his soul was utterly in love with him.

It was also because of this that he and every fragment of his couldn’t stand seeing people other than himself getting close to Cheng Zhi Chu —- Even if the other party used to be a part of himself.

Dark desire gradually surged inside him.

Anyone who gets between him and Cheng Zhi Chu——even if it’s himself —– he would kill them all.

“The person who you should really kiss……is me.”

Characters:

  • MC isn't one of those OP or strong from the start qt protags, nor is he a whiny green tea b*tch. He's just terrified and useless at first, and he really feels like the unfortunate protagonist of a horror movie. Also, although MC is ocassionally described in a way that makes him sound like a warm and charming pretty boy (specifically in instances), the author usually doesn't constantly call him beautiful or extoll his virtues. Although he doesn't become OP, he does go through some growth, and by c50ish he's gone from a crying panicking mess who barely survives (in c1), to a little panicked but capable of keeping his wits while being chased by a ghost.
  • The ML we see the most is a somewhat boring "gentlemanly yandere", though his diary entries at the end of each chapter can be funny. His boss selves are more interesting. Some are creepy or scary and feel like actual horror bosses, and I think it's great that their love for MC doesn't make them any less dangerous for him. Others are more like "horror movie with a pitiful ghost" type bosses, and those bosses make me ship the boss and MC, and make me more invested in the main CP by virtue of "the bosses are just parts of ML". Story-wise, I think it also shows the contrast between ML's sweet love for MC and his more problematic yandere obsession with him.
  • Side characters aren't that interesting. They have some personality, but they don't have that same magnetic "wow, I would love an entire series on just this side character" charm that some other novels have. Most side characters also only appear when needed by the plot and then completely disappear again.
Story:

  • This is a genuine horror qt novel (and not just a romance qt with "horror media settings"), so there's some gore, which can make this somewhat difficult to read for some people. PSA/TW for people bad with that kind of thing (but then, why are you reading a horror tag novel?). There's more thought put into the instance worlds, and sometimes I actually think to myself "damn, I'd love an entire novel/game in this world" or "ahhh, I wish there was more info on this monster's backstory!"
  • The system is entertaining, which is always a plus for a qt novel. It reminds me of a little kid who thinks he has figured out a great solution for a difficult problem, and the adults try to explain to him how inefficient/wrong it actually is but the kid is fully convinced that he's the next mathematical genius. It doesn't show up very often, but when it does it's a riot.
  • The genre flips between horror and comedy in a well-paced way that breaks tension in good places and doesn't go on for too long. The pattern seems to be "tension -> comedic moment -> (repeat) -> tension -> horrifying scene -> tension (?) -> comedic moment -> next scenario". It's good for people who might get too scared to have a moment of reprieve before moving on, and personally all my favorite funny moments were funnier because they were so tension breaking.
  • It's written like an action novel, ie snappy "narrated as it happens" type, which I have recently become really appreciative of after reading so many novels where the author seemingly nakes their novel longer by purposely extending scenes to the point where they lose all tension and cohesion.
  • Not gonna lie, it lowkey feels like I'm reading Outlast fanfic at times.
Overall:

It's not perfect, but it's enjoyable to read. I'm on a horror qt/regular BL novel streak right now and this is one of the better ones. Genuine horror settings, funny scenes, entertaining MC, good writing, and great TL! Sometimes I find novels that are ok but a slog to get through, or have a promising premise but I end up having to skip or persist through 20-50 chapters before it gets interesting, but this is one I looked forward to reading and finishing from the start. It's... more>> somewhat short though, the ending felt sudden and I was really looking forward to seeing all the different bosses, but that would've taken hundreds of chapters.

Recommending this to people who want to read a horror comedy with good writing but not too serious. <<less

More like a 3.5

The novel is seriously funny in some areas and not so much in others. I have to admit each boss in each instance was interesting, probably a bit more so than the actual male lead. I actually feel so much for Su Ling (one of the instance bosses) than I do for any other character.

The MC is a normal guy, no super powers or luck besides just getting the ML's undivided attention. I do wish the side characters were more fleshed out, as Gu Zhen and Ji... more>> Xiao seemed like they would make very interesting second and third male leads. I wish I knew what was so captivating about the MC that everyone keeps falling for him though. He's described as cute but not the breathtaking beauty that all the other MLs are.

What I took stars off for and what still really bugs me at the end of the novel was:

Spoiler
  1. When and where and why and how did Bai Yi fall for MC? They said in the Rose Villa instance that he dreamed about MC (who was a kid of like 8 years old) and his daily life and just fell in love and grew obsessed... but what tied them together? Why did Bai Yi even dream about him in the first place because MC sure as hell did not dream about him in any way!
  2. Why is Bai Yi so powerful? In other novels where the ML is the boss in all instances it's because he's this supernatural or extraterrestrial being but Bai Yi was just a normal man with good luck who got mu*dered. He's literally bending space and time in those instances. I really do not understand why he is so strong??
  3. And how come he can be resurrected with a body that has been dead for 6 years, what age did he resurrect to? Does his family not think it's weird he didn't age up? All the other bodies in the mass grave were turned to bones and maggots, how come his is still fresh? Like, idgi? Everyone else that got mu*dered was also because of luck.
  4. Mr Mu and his organization... so what happened to the investigation into that? If they were the OG players even if Mr Mu got killed (again, how? If he stole hundreds of people's luck and Bai Yi was fighting him with his luck gone) where did the whole organization go to??
  5. Just SO many loose ends! And the author spent so much time elaborating them that I feel cheated now that the novel's over and those loose ends aren't explained!

I finished the novel and it left me feeling frustrated :\

Honestly, the MC wasn’t that clever when everyone claimed he was. He was more on the dense side almost bordering s*upid. Not that I hated it, just kind of annoyed me sometimes. Also, there were some side characters that may have been unnecessary for the story to flow, probably only introduced as to add spice?

But apart from that, the plot is good, there’s lots of fluff and the ML was rather amusing (possessive MLs ftw). Just take into account that the extras are more of a must-read because they tidy... more>> up the loose ends that the main story didn’t explain.

i just wish it was more explicit, if you know what I mean. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) <<less

It was a good read, it reminded me of Game Loading a lot. If you're expecting an OP, cold MC who don't need no man then you might want to click away. In this book, the MC is naive, cute, not exactly weak but not strong either. It can be said that he relied on the ML a lot. Do I hate that? Not really. But I did get kind of annoyed, maybe because I was expecting the MC to be stronger at some point. The character development was (probably?)... more>> there. As I read I saw MC grew from a scaredy cat into less of a coward (lol).

The horror and suspense were quite good. It wasn't exactly that scary since you'll get some lovey dovey moments so it was quite easeful. The mystery also got my brain working. There were ML's diaries written at the end of each chapter and they were really cute.

The only part I was dissatisfied with was Mr. Mu's story. The author depicted him to be the main villain of the story, but we did not encounter him at all (apparently because he was already defeated by the ML in the past and had become a monster trapped in the game?). But I mean, if you're going to write about a villain who caused misery upon the ML then you might as well write it thoroughly. Tell us the detail of how he managed to kill ML and how in the end he was defeated. Not just some "ML: After he killed me, we met again in the game, we fought and I won". It gave me the impression that the author was lazy and couldn't bother to explain his background story.

The MC was also quite stubborn about his s*xual orientation lmao, it was around 70 chapters later that he finally realized and admitted that he liked ML. I felt that the story ended kinda abruptly but all in all it was excellent. <<less

Thank you very much to the translators!!!

This was a fun read, really liked the relationship between the two protagonists! I have my favourites when it comes to arcs (mainly those pertaining to Cheng Zichu himself) but they're all pretty entertaining with the exception of the last instance, in my opinion.

Spoiler

The boss rush in that last bit was just kind of unnecessary and disappointing. Like did the merman AND his brother have to be fragments? Did the twins have to be fragments too? Kinda unnecessary in my view.

But fun none the less! A solid 4.5/5 for me!

Spoiler

Joshua and Su Ling are still best boy to me. Joshua, especially, once out of his instance is such a darling hehehehe!!!

I am fan of Unlimited flow novels, but this one is different.. In a bad way. There is no mystery, puzzle, games or problem solving. It is exactly as title says, he clears by kissing and nothing else.

Plot: 3/5- idea is there but the execution was meh? I felt bad for some of the characters/ghosts, their past story was tragic. I think I liked stories about their past more.

World building: 2/5 -World building is very typical settings of horror movies. School, hospital, mansion e.t.c So nothing fresh or interesting.

Main character/MC:... more>> Well he is not that smart, strong or beautiful. Just a normal dude. I was annoyed with him at some parts, he acts like a damsel in distress.

ML: He is very bland. I really don't understand the reason of his obsession with MC. And I prefer every other piece of souls personality than main ML. ML is the blandest of them all. Being obsessed with MC is his whole "personality". <<less

In terms of the usual 'solving each instance/game/unlimited flow world', it's pretty weak compared to others (the earth is online, kaleidoscope of death, global university entrance exam or even mist) - but hence the title: relying on kissing the boss to complete the game. Obviously, you should be here mainly for the dog food and not really the 'mystery' or 'survival game' part of the novel. I say that cuz a lot of the instances don't really stand out unless they're used to explain the backstory of the MC or... more>> ML (like I still remember GUEE's first mystery/game related to the hunter, refraction and finding the seat for judas, which I read a year ago). That's that for the survival game and mystery aspect.

KTCSG is kinda weak in most aspects, except the romance is good. But honestly, Game Loading is better.

Anyways, MC and ML together are way too cute - ML's possessiveness and yandere-like tendencies make it even cuter, especially his diary excerpts, EXTREMELY CUTEEEEE. So much dog food even before they get together, which is making me wanna read more novels with dog food rather than them survival games XD

Anyways, you should read this! <<less

3.5 (They should really let us give half points.)

Just finished this story. I didn't read too many reviews before I read becuase it looked like a lot of people didn't finish reading the story, which in itself is telling I suppose.

I in no way hated or even disliked this story. It is exactly what I imagined it to be when I read the synopsis of it above. My biggest complaint of this story is how all of the instances seem to be long and detailed then we get to... more>> the end and the fusion story and everything is rushed into a few chapters, with very little content that pertains to the story. If I am being honest I felt like I was reading a story that the author themselves kind of quit on near the end.

There seemed to be a lot of potential for this story line, and I think some of the instances showed off that potential, it was really just the rushed feeling at the end that didn't sit right. I can only complain so much though, because rushed or not, the story was wrapped up without a ton of loose ends.

This is not a complicated story by any means, the main focal point is an obsessively loving and jealous ML, who regardless of their appearance or memories love the MC more than life itself, literally in most cases.

Overall I thought the story was pretty cute, there wasn't any particular character or event that I really loved, but all in all I thought it was a cute story to read that didn't require too much effort on my end.

Spoiler

Side Note: There is no NSFW, there are just kisses for days!

I was really impressed with this novel. It has very effective horror, humor and sweetness. Sophisticated character development and growth. It takes confidence to handle a plot with this many twists and intertwined elements effectively and this author does it. I also really appreciated that even though it was survival game, there were breaks between the arcs where you got to see characters 'in reality'. It gave depth to the story that you don't normally get with this genre. There was a satisfying ending and the extras, while gruesome at... more>> times were entertaining wrap-ups for other aspects of the plot. It was also nice to see characters normally killed off as cannon fodder kept around as real world friends for the couple after the happy ending.

I definitely recommend giving this a try! <<less

The recs above are on point: this is gonna be a downgraded version of Game Loading, an awesome mirror of Misplacement Game, with the same mystery feel as To be a Heartthrob.

The premise is nonsensical & fun, which is why I instantly dove in without even bothering to look at opinions. I really adore pampering themes & the ML in this one dotes on the MC to the point of ridiculous obsession. Yes, sometimes his antics may be too extreme but for us third-parties, it's incredibly entertaining. Lighting candles for poor MC... It's horror but not really lol. The instances may be frightening for the other players, but for the MC who's given grace & exceptions since he's loved by the instance bosses, they're a piece of cake! Best... more>> feature of this novel that makes it stand out is ML's little diary entries that are included at the end of each chapter. They're hilarious & adds a lot of fun "depth" to his crazy personality. It makes reading the chapters way more fun & I like that it gives ML more flavor than his standard vinegar-eating OP self. Also MC is like a walking gay magnet... like the guy just attracts every hot dude out there. <<less

I did not expect it to be this good. I came for the kisses and stayed for the plot. Kind of a mix between Game Loading and Misplacement Game. I never really read novels with weak and extreme shou-like MCs but the MC was pretty cute in this one, even if he does scream and cry a lot. I really like the ML, especially his little diary moments at the end of the chapter, they're hilarious. I really like their interactions, even if they're mostly kissing. And I kind of... more>> feel bad for the ML, he literally got friend-zoned 20 times in every chapter. Also the extras are amazing. <<less

To start with, it's more of a 4.5 star rating for me.

The translation was good and though there are some grammatical errors, they weren't too much and could be overlooked as they weren't affecting the way the story flowed.

The descriptions were also pretty detailed and maybe creepy or scary for those who aren't used or love the horror genre.

The characters were also fleshed out and were also completely endearing in their own ways. I'm not too fond of yandere ML as they feel so overused and some end up crossing... more>> the line and it seems to be too toxic, but Bai Yi was one of the few exceptions. Haha. I especially loved his diary entries and his inner thoughts. Still wanting to peek at those drawings by BY haha.

The arcs were engaging and made me curious to know exactly what happened and why. The only thing I don't like is that they feel too short and the story seemed rushed by the end.

But overall, it's a story that I would recommend for reading. <<less

I personally liked the novel although there are some arcs that were left unjustified. For example the bloody fairytale, it would have been good if it was longer and more development about the vampire prince and how the MC reunited with Chrisis.

I've grown to love some of the soul fragments such as Xie Yuan Huai and Su Ling. Overall, this is a good novel for those who were binging.

The plot is more focused on the relationship instead of horror. It's a nice read if you're tired of high emotional take type of novels.

You don't feel the surprised since we already know who the ML is from the synopsis alone.

PS: the ML diary entry is the most funny part here though.
