“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

A rare gem out there!
  • adorkable enemies-to-lovers relationship
  • comedy gold balanced with serious/somewhat dark things
  • worldbuilding different from your typical cardboard cut-out ability users/zombies/beast tides
  • ethical dilemmas!!
  • "legit" sci-fi pseudoscience that is super cool and could totally happen (math, physics)
  • really great tension, pacing, and concise writing
  • CUTE MUSHROOM!
Readers discover a whole new world with our ultra-innocent, trying-hard-to-be-human little mushroom looking for the vestiges of human civilization for clues to his missing spore. This is a story about hope, redemption, humanity, and most of all, kindness.

I was pleasantly surprised by the writing, to be honest.

An... more>> incredibly original dystopia type novel where many things are not as they seem on the surface~ There's an undertone of darkness and mystery, but at the same time, the really cute comedy and our pure mushroom MC balances it all out.

Highly recommend, fantastic translation as well. Now I'm off to reread because this was a great story. <<less

A novel that I desperately wanted to like but was left disappointed.

I loved Little Mushroom's world-building and originality, huge props to the author for thinking up a truly unique post-apocalypse scenario. The pacing was good for the most part, and the plot was engaging and very well thought out. You'd never guess this novel would have a happy ending, but when it came I found it believable and satisfying.

However, after we get past 3/4 of the novel, the narration quality declines quickly. We're thrown from one major story arc into... more>> another in a very short period of time, which gets very annoying very fast.

Spoiler

I hated 'An Zhe at Pauli's base' part of the story the most, because not only our MC and ML are apart for it when it could've been used to deepen their frankly very underdeveloped relationship, but we also get a huge amount of info-dumping to explain what exactly is going on with the magnetic fields and why everything started fusing together.

[collapse]

The sci-fi plot is already complicated enough, but because of the overall good pacing of the story it was served to the reader in small comprehensible chunks which were easy to follow. It felt to me as if the author had to rush the ending and crammed everything together at the very end, hence the info-dumping.

I also couldn't bring myself to love any of the side characters, except for Shaw whose interactions with An Zhe were hilarious. Other characters were either uninteresting and served no purpose to the plot or were killed off too quickly for me to start really caring for them. I felt like there was more to An Ze and his friend/ex-boyfriend's story, but it ended up amounting to nothing. Dousay, Poet, Lily and her friend all seemed interesting, but their characters ended up superficial and unexplored.

I wasn't a fan of the romance between An Zhe and Lu Feng either. At first, I enjoyed their dynamic and was looking forward to their every interaction, but as the story progressed, their relationship remained underdeveloped.

Spoiler

I was excited when Lu Feng's jet crashed and he ended up stranded with An Zhe, but their time together was again cut short, and by the time An Zhe is reborn in the epilogue, they felt like two strangers who got thrown together by the plot and didn't understand each other at all. Don't get me wrong, I usually like novels that focus more on the plot than the romance, but here the romance felt like an afterthought.

[collapse]

To sum it up, Little Mushroom is a decent sci-fi novel that is worth reading if you're a fan of the genre, but unfortunately, I personally didn't find it as groundbreaking as the reviews make it out to be. <<less

For those who avoided on reading this because ppl said it's sad and will make you cry:

There's fluff in the ending and extras between main CP alsooo although it's tragedy it's fully HE so it's all good. You should give it a try and I regret shelving this for so long because I don't wanna read tragedy and bleak stuff. Overall it's also a short read and won't really take much of your time so give it a go (。•̀ᴗ-) ✧

I finished this a long time ago but I'm writing this now because it has been rated 1-star.

To the reviewer who gave 1 star because you weren't expecting a dramatic novel... are you okay? The tags are clearly all there but you gave this 1-star because you didn't read them?

This novel is a sci-fi BL masterpiece. The right amount of sci-fi, right amount of tension, right amount of romance in a time where no one can be completely trusted.

Several times I thought this was BE but the resolution for the... more>> CP and the rest of humanity made all the pain worth it. <<less

So many people liked it, the rating is also very good, so I'll be the one to talk bad about it.

Just kidding, It just wasn't what I was expecting. It's my fault for not paying attention that it was a dramatic novel, and I don't like all that suspense, it's just really boring to me. But if you like theses things, go on, that's the novel for you.

Spoilers ahead.

Spoiler

The MC was a mushroom, and never lived in a society, so he was made unfeeling and this, THIS frustraded me so much. It was like he was a cannon fodder, useless and boring person. And then we have the ML, who just like in most BL stories is cold and no one approaches him. Very well, what a boring pair. I was expecting a lot of action and battles from this novel, deep friendships and a nice development. And that was why I kept reading this book. I was expecting the MC to get a lot of empathy and develop a lot of emotions. But as the numbers of stars given may spoil, he didn't. Even by the end of the novel he still didn't know how to express himself very well. OK, at least he must be strong, right? He is not. Oof. This novel reminds me of slice of life when it comes to the two protagonists, if you forget the world ending and the tragedys happening on the background of course. Anyway, it's probably my tastes who just were incompatible with the novel rather than it being the books fault. So feel free to read it. Don't let my thoughts influence you that much.

This is the first story I have ever left a review for and I've read a lot of stories so far. After finishing this story it made me want to share just how much I love it.

First things first, I had to constantly remind myself this story has a happy ending; however, it's not like cry your eyes out sad. Through out the entire story there are sad parts. Obviously since the setting is apocalyptic. So if super sad stories aren't your thing don't worry.

The world building of the story... more>> is also very good. I'm not sure if the author actually did real world research or they just made it up, but either way the way it was described made it seem so real.

The character building is also good. Not so much in the sense that the characters had an emotional epiphany at the end, but that every character that had a name was used to the fullest. No name mentioned was just useless memory waiting to be tossed out.

My favorite thing about this story is the main character. Most stories that have naive characters are usually so naive and innocent they crossover into s*upid territory (at least to me). The MC is not like that at all. One scene in particular made me realize that a character can be naive and smart. I obviously won't spoil that scene but a hint would be the third floor.

The ending wraps up nicely. I do wish the author gave an explicit answer to two events that happens at the end, but it's also nice that I'm allowed to think however I want about those two events.

The translation quality is also very good. There are some mistakes, but nothing that makes the story hard to read, and it doesn't happen often.

Overall it's a great story. I only wish it was longer, so I can enjoy the HE longer. <<less

What a beautiful story about the struggle to live and what it means to be human. In the end, the book concludes that humanity is worth saving, and can be saved, so long as they manage to hang on to that thread of selflessness and kindness towards strangers. This thread might get trampled when the situation gets tough, and threatened as people see so many dying, but as long as some are willing to live for the greater good, that's enough to prove there's still humanity. In the end, it's... more>> not the genetics that need to be saved, it's the ideals. We learn that sometimes kindness looks kind, and sometimes, kindness is cruel.

I love how the author sucks the reader into the apocalypse (which, funny enough, starts in the spring of 2020). Instead of a worldwide pandemic, the earth is struck with the loss of its electromagnetic current and people start realizing they can become infected with the newly evolved monsters. They're able to hang onto life by discarding due process, and suppressing human decency. People essentially become like the animals they're fighting, except with the ability to feel guilty for their cruelty. People deal with this guilt in many ways - some refuse to accept the new world order, some cling onto the need to help humanity survive, some live on pure hope and faith, some live for love and then the doll of their love, and some give up all hope.

The reader quickly learns to not get attached in this world. People die and individuals seem ephemeral and fragile. Characters that jump off the page with their strong personalities get extinguished in moments. This is what the apocalypse feels like - the impermanence, the need to appreciate every grain of happiness and humor as if it was a solid boulder, the need to savor the moment. There's hope that things will end well, but it's blind faith in a 'HE' tag that feels increasingly flimsy against every new death and severe peril the humans face.

Having read this book, I know I would not do well in the apocalypse. Even with the omniscient knowledge that things will end well, I still doubt and almost give up hope. I can't imagine how I'd continue if there wasn't even that certainty that things will definitely work out. This is probably why people who are religious live longer, even if that religion is just belief in the need for humanity to survive. And maybe, if there really is an apocalypse in 2020, this story will help infuse me with enough faith to live on just a little longer. <<less

Rating: 5/5- No words will ever describe how beautiful this novel is. It is my novel of the year, 2020.

It depicts a cruel reality where a little mushroom becomes all hope. This novel just did everything right, and mostly this MC crawled into my heart and left a spore. I think I’d tell this story to my kids (in a child friendly way of course), if I ever have kids that is.

I can’t say anything anymore except just read this book!

I've just started this and it's amazing. The story itself is addicting and I'm definitely going to binge reread it when it's finished being translated. The TL note in the summary is spot on though. While sprinkled through with hints of fluff, this isn't a fluffy novel. Prepare for pain. There's one thing I've realized while reading: Aside from the MC and ML, don't get too attached to any of the characters, because they probably won't still be alive in the next five-fifteen chapters, and that's if they're lucky enough... more>> to last that long. <<less

Normally I hate mtl-ing novels; even if I know a bit of chinese due to how tedious it is, but I actually finished the whole novel using mtl, , , , For anyone who's curious, the mtl is quite easy to read! The effort the translator puts into their translations is obvious though, so I definitely recommend reading the actually translated version!

The plot and atmosphere of the story is nice, balancing on the edge of despair with tinges of humour that brightens the otherwise bleak storyline. I don't know why,... more>> but the setting kinda reminds me of "Laws of the Other World" in terms of a balance between humour and angst.

An Zhe and Lu Feng are kind of a heartbreaking couple, especially as the tone of the book slowly spirals into more despair. I had to keep reminding myself it was a happy ending (● ˃̶͈̀ロ˂̶͈́) ੭ꠥ⁾⁾

Spoiler

the ending made me cry alot jsjdkfg my tearducts are already super weak so I literally burst into tears. I felt especially bad when An Zhe gets tortured because he's just trying his best (╥﹏╥)

Set 100 years into the future, the story begins when a little mushroom is robbed of his spore. Determined to retrieve his stolen spore, the mushroom must find a way to infiltrate the human base camp, where his spore is being studied for research purposes. How will he evade detection given that the Trial Court’s judge, Lu Feng, has a 100% strike rate of detecting and shooting non-humans that try to infiltrate the base? If he does... more>> find a way to enter the base, how will he find his spore? And how will he adjust to being human give that he’s just a little mushroom?

4/5 ⭐️ for Little Mushroom by Shisi (一十四洲). A story of resilience, love and what it ultimately means to be human.

I’d have given this 5 stars but I decided to dock a star for three reasons. (1) There’s a lot of science given that this is a science fiction book. My issue is not with the science but with its authenticity. A lot of things don’t make sense scientifically. (2) Lu Feng could have been fleshed out a bit more. His backstory, his version of events, etc. He comes across as an emotionless killer who one day, decides to make an exception but I think there’s more to him that hasn’t made its way to the book and that’s a shame. (3) There was no need to mention the race of the characters. This is a dystopian future. The world is about to collapse. So the mentioning of ‘brown-skinned Indian’ felt like bad writing. <<less

There's fluff in the ending and extras between main CP also although it's tragedy it's fully HE so it's all good. You should give it a try and I regret shelving this for so long because I don't wanna read tragedy and bleak stuff.

This is probably the best danmei with an apocalyptic setting I have read. It doesn't involve your usual apocalypse themes or even OP characters (even though some people claim that our ML is OP, from how I see it, he's not). The words and lines are so... more>> poetic yet they drag you into the atmosphere outright with beautiful dialogues and explanations. Such styles are treasures I love and they are rare, really rare! The setting and atmosphere of the whole novel is somber and despair inducing with angst enough to make you anxious/uneasy and cry. This novel clearly describes how an apocalypse would be. There would be no one to give humans abilities. Even fate or nature won't be on our side.

The little mushroom's interactions with Colonel were the only sunshine for me in this novel. This was the only fluff yet it made my heart warm so many times that I really felt chocked up.

The MC is a little mushroom who is ignorant of the world but is not s*upid. Naive yes, because he's only been human for a very short while, but he learns and adapts very fast. MC in this story was more like a passerby with a goal, someone who didn't participate or care about world-saving. Thus, there wasn't much action going on but the writing was smooth and it was hard to stop reading.

And the ML is one of the most well fleshed out ML I've seen. He's strong yes, but unlike most MLs in other novels who are depicted as young with mindblowing achievements but tosses all their values aside for their One True Love, he's not irrationally blinded by it, and understands himself all too well without having too many inner struggles, which to me, showcased how truly strong he is. A person who "judges" whether people are infected and pose a threat to the safety of the base — and as a result of being the best at discerning such factors, he has a lot of blood in his hands. He is a sad and almost tragic character, headstrong and has a firm belief on the base. <<less

I would just like to file a complaint against the very misleading summary. Yes, I read the reviews and knew that this story wasn't the cute little fluffy story that it made itself seem to be. However, I didn't expect this????

I've read numerous apocalyptic world settings. This is by far the most unique, and probably the best. It was extremely fascinating to read about it from the point of view of a mushroom. And I actually really liked how the author gave solid explanations and descriptions of how and why... more>> the world was deteriorating the way it was. (Props to both the author and the translator for this. Absolutely phenomenal writing and translating). Although I can't say to have understood or really grasped most of it, I still read every single word. This isn't the type of novel where you turn off your brain and just accept that "this is how it is." It's the type where if you want to actually delve into and enjoy it, you have to seriously read and consider everything. And the fact that it touched on so many philosophical and ethical points was an utter and very pleasant surprise. The whole thing with the Rose Contract absolutely blew my mind. And there was so much debate and discussion on the various aspects of humanity. It's just amazing how a novel with such an outrageous premise (the main character is a f*cking mushroom and people be turning into bees oh and the world is ending like wtf) can be so realistic at the same time.

I cried a lot during this. Way too much. I feel like the entire last part of the novel was just me sobbing. Every time I thought "ok we've hit the rock bottom, now it has to get better, " I discover the author's concept of rock bottom was not the same as mine. Somehow she always finds a way to make everything more miserable. Thank GOD that the translator clarified that this was a happy ending because I was seriously doubting myself in the later chapters.

I absolutely love An Zhe and Lu Feng. I felt like both of their characters were built very well. When I first met Lu Feng I had some terrible misconceptions about him, just like everyone else in the story did. However, when An Zhe got to know him better, I the reader did as well, and it just made me really really want to understand him more. I really felt like I could begin to understand why he's the way he is, and why exactly he fell for An Zhe. And on An Zhe's side, I guess you could categorize him into the cute silly MC category. But I really love him so much. He's a f*cking mushroom if he's not cute and silly what do you expect him to be. I really just want to f*cking hold him in my palms and cherish him. And I really was able to feel him getting closer to Lu Feng, and getting to know him better, and falling in love with him. Oh my god the moment when he discovered/admitted that he was in love with Lu Feng I absolutely lost control of all of my tear glands. I was absolutely gone.

Anyways, the progression of this novel is quite slow, and there's a lot of rather heavy plot. And it keeps getting heavier and heavier. If you're looking for a quick and lighthearted read, this is absolutely not it. But you should read it regardless because it's goddamn good. That's all. <<less

This was such a beautiful story. This story is a big emotion rollercoaster for me. I cried so many times that my eyes hurts (the last time I cried so much was in TGCF).

I thought the story was going to be sweet/fluff type (the summary toh) but It was actually full of sadness, anguish and heartbreaking moments....... making you wonder whether this story is really HE or not. Don't worry, IT IS HE.

THE PLOT:

The story starts with MC, a mushroom going to the human base to get his spore back which was stolen by a human.

It's a hardcore Sci-fi plot with humans trying to survive in the environment is full of mutant plants and animal that want to eat humans and can infect humans. The whole story is very tense and is one of the most actual apocalypse like apocalypse novel.

As much as I love the plot and felt the story was executed very well, the things related with magnetic field and frequency I kinda got it at the same time didn't. I could understand the overall situation of what happened but not exact detail. I kinda fried my brain from thinking too.

CHARACTER:

Though the characters in this novel are flat but damn it, how can anyone not love our cute Little Mushroom.

As for ML...... this was the first time I have experience such kind of ML/Seme/Gong........ So Loyal.... to Humanity. Ready to Sacrifice himself and take the most cruelest role for the sake of Humans or humanity. Mostly it has always been MC, with sacrificing nature. This one is the first.

Also I sincerely advice not to fall for or love any other characters aside MC and ML unless you want to feel the pain of tragedy.

ROMANCE:

Despite being a serious and tense survival plot story this novel doesn't lack in romance. The story doesn't only focus of sci-fi/survival plot but also on romance and the presence of romance is very clear. It's not sweet and fluffy romance but more like bittersweet romance which especially hit really hard in this tragic world making us lose hope again and again. ... more>>
Spoiler

I cried when MC realize he loves ML and that too when he was far awa far away from ML and was going to die soon. It was so hearbreaking for me.

And then when they finally met again and MC smiled and then went into the fire...... aahhghghg I couldn't stop my tears.

[collapse]

The romance between MC and ML is like it just happened as it is not clear why MC fell for ML or Vice versa. It just happened as they came in contact with eah other more and it was mutual ( -᷄ ω -᷅).

PS: I wished they had given us ML POV of what he thought of MC.

OVERALL:

This was a very beautiful story but with every chapter feel with sad and anguish moment. Though it's a HE, the story will make you waver and question whether there will really be HE or not and when there's the glimps or hope of HE, it'll once again drag you down to the pit of Hell. The author played with our heart very well.
Spoiler

I thought MC might survive when he met heterogeneous species and polly. I thought maybe they might be able to do something since this story is suppose to be HE but then the next chapter author present us with MC coughing blood and MC destine to die in that body........ F

[collapse]

Thankfully, it's HE and the extras are very sweet and a bit fluff finally.

Lastly thanks to translator for translating this novel ❤️. <<less

Don't be fooled by the synopsis. This isn't a light novel. There are deaths, there are killings, really don't read this expecting it's a fluffy romance story about a single dad and an aloof man who "kidnaps" his son :"

But regardless, this is a very interesting read. Especially if you're starting to feel tired reading about ancient worlds, transmigration/rebirth, and cultivation stories. This novel raises the question of what makes one human in a delicate way. After reading this I can't stop thinking about the MC, the ML, and the... more>> world they're living in for quite sometime.

The only negative thing I could say about this novel is that they haven't laid yet— so far (Chapter 85).

In terms of adventure, character development, plot, translation, and slow-burn romance— all are satisfying. It was worth rereading— especially that I first read it under the mountainous pressure of school requirements. Anyway, it was worth it.

Here are the things to look forward to:
(I believe it is spoiler-free)

CHARACTERS:
> I haven't been so satisfied with an MC before. An Zhe (MC) was innocent but not s*upid. He... more>> may not be as intelligent as Zhou YunSheng (from FOD) but he was understanding and receptive. He may seem overly calm and ignorant in chaotic times but in fact, he knows and decided to just accept everything. Most importantly, he may be a mushroom but he has feelings. I just really, really him.
> Lu Feng (ML) was quickly climbing the ranks of My Most Favourite MLs until... it reached the end of the novel but he hasn't banged An Zhe yet! So frustrating! Also, they have slept on the same bed more than three times yet he still won't make any moves! Where is your dick, Lu Feng?! To borrow the words of Dr. Ji (from this novel), "You (Lu Feng) disappoint me more than An Zhe"— he said that after finding out that Lu Feng and An Zhe didn't slept together after all those chances.
> Characters came and went, it was sad but the dead is impossible to come back. There are many deaths in this novel, however, it just reflects the real life— where people come and go. It is unlike other novels where some seemingly important characters were forgotten by the author. Here, their disappearance is justified.

PLOT:
> The pacing of events are not boring nor fast. Everything may be unexpected but they were narrated in a timely manner.
> The concept was unique and logical. The conflicts were properly solved and twists are something to look forward to.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
> I truly enjoyed accompanying MC's gradual understanding of human nature. The most enjoyable was whenever he tries to converse with people using his limited understanding during his first month. He was so adorable!

ROMANCE:
> It is already a great achievement when the characters' romance did not overcome the plot. This novel achieved that.
> It is frustratingly slow but satisfyingly sweet.
> The ML, though frighteningly cold, was a— uhm— capable, caring, and a good person (but was sometimes fierce so I'm not sure how to fully describe him).
> The MC is not dense in this department. In fact, he was pretty straight forward. He even once asked the ML, "Do you want to sleep with me?" at the first extra chapter.
> Of course he's not a human so he can be considered not dense.

TRANSLATION:
> The translation quality is great! It was Rainbowturtle who translated it.

Overall, it was a great novel worth cherishing. <<less
