That night, I listened to the hymns till dawn, not for serenity, but to seek a sliver of your soul;

That month, I flipped through all the scriptures, not for enlightenment, but to touch the pages where your fingers once lingered;

That year, I knelt on the grounds, my head embracing the dust, not to pay obeisance to the Gods, but to feel the warmth you left behind;

That life, I wandered through ten thousand great mountains, not in search of an afterlife, but to cross paths with you –

Gao Fei, will you believe that I lived through this night, this day, this year, and this lifetime, only to hold your hand and accompany you in this journey of life?

I think, you will have differing opinions between the female protagonist and the male protagonist, who to hate. The characters are written really well- both are as hateable as the other.

One is transparent, however, her obsession goes to the realm of a mentally challenged person, another deceives himself and is extremely obstinate.

Their actions don't lead to good ends for either of them.

One might say HYJ had a good end, but one can be happy at their end, yet still not have lived happily. She was cheerful throughout, and at the end, got what she wanted. She was happy, but was their end a good end by itself? If you've read this spoiler, just go read it. I'm not very good at expressing my thoughts.

Amazing story, but I gave 4 stars due to the tears I have shed.

It has realistic personalities. The MC is completely in love with the ML, and done s*upid things to get him. But he self-awareness and self-loathing makes me cry for, makes me sympathise even when I know if someone did that to me I would hate them.

After the MC passed away I loved how the peaceful life of the ML slowly broke down, his delusion of him doing better without the MC, became task for him not a... more>> wish. <<less

This story is greatly written with amazing detail and fantastic story-telling. The translation is smooth for easy reading. I like how the translator also wrote some review about the story easing the reader for better understanding.

So, the story is divided by two part.

Part 1:

From perspective of the girl from the synopsis. How she continue her life with lots of burden and hardship while still remain loyal to her loved one after she had done bad things earlier before. It doesnt necessarilly will make you sympatize with the MC, infact its... more>> totally up to you wheter to judge her good or bad.

Part 2:

This part is from the pov of ML. This is the continuation after the end of part 1. Basically what happen to the ML after big event that happen at the end of part 1. Pretty sad I might said.

I held back myself from giving out any spoilers as I myself really enjoy the story without any spoiler. This is a real heart-wrenching, broken hearted type of story. A bit of unrequited love and a bit obsessive love. But nothing too extreme and dont worry, im perfectly sure you guys are gonna like it. Perfect 10 ?!! <<less

As everyone said, a tragic masterpiece. All 13 chapters lead me by my emotions. In the beginning I hated her, then I pitied her, then I loved her, and then I could never forget her. Then as I watched the male lead character develop I was given the impression that I cannot tell reality in the novel from his delusions, and even when the ending came within reason, it was also beyond my wildest expectations. Perhaps one of those rare novels where MC is wicked, irrational, and despised for her... more>> obsession yet I can't possibly bring myself to hate her. <<less

An exceptionally beautifully written story.

As a die hard fan of tragedy I have to say, that this story is the one of the most simplistic yet realistic day to day life story U have ever read.

I spent the last chapters crying buckets, feeling frustrated and but unable to stop reading. The ending had a beautiful conclusion, so different from the cliche ones.

I don't usually write reviews but this book was worth the time to write one.

The book is not a happy one at all and it makes you really think about relationships and what love truly is between people. It was an emotional ride from beginning to end. Both He Yujin and Gao Fei had their own ideas about love and the relationship and seeing it from both their point of views was really interesting.

This was definitely one of the best BE books I've read and the translation was top notch... more>> as well, totally deserving of the good reviews I've seen so far. I highly recommend the book but be prepared to cry haha. <<less

Jesus lord I couldn´t stop crying. This was truly an emotional ride and I don´t give 5 stars so easily. This is a story about what unhealthy and obsessive love leads to. I couldn´t stop reading until I finished it and it still wasn´t enough. Now my eyes are puffy.

Highly recommended but be prepared to shed a few tears.

This novel is one of the most beautiful and touching tragedies I have ever read. Though it is only 13 chapters long, the flow of the stories is simple but expresses everything. For those who are reading this if you like My Fiancée Fell In Love With My Younger Sister you will love this too though they are moving in different ways.

Wow, okay. I decided to read this bc the random novel option pushed this in my direction, and the poem in the description was hella vague and I didn't know what to expect but....

wow....

I actually legit cried reading this.

... more>> Everyone in this novel is so flawed, so human. The entire thing felt very real. It doesn't help that it was being written in first person, literally shoving you into the shoes of the main characters.

The FL is spoiled, selfish, and hurt the people she loved, but ultimately, she's still a very loveable character. She's naive, oblivious, but not without reason. Seeing her interaction with the ML was just heartbreaking from start to finish but you can see that even if her ways are reckless and selfish, she did love the ML even if he hated her, and blamed her for what happened. In fact, more than half of the unfortunate incidents that happened to ML were not even done directly by her.
Spoiler

but was done rather by her father, who really dotes on her because of her weak physique. She knows of what her father had done only afer, but still accepts the fact that it would not happened if she was not as spoiled or insisted, and she understands the fact that he hated her and would not forgive her.

[collapse]
He hated her and she knows, that's why every little slightly positive thing he does, something as simple as a glint in his eyes, delights her, and it was heart breaking to see. Still, she doesn't deny that his misery started with her, and In the end, she paid for it.... kinda.... Her end left a bitterweet feeling in my mouth. Still, I think among all of the characters, the FL and the ML's ex probably got the happiest ending.

On the other hand, the ML was the one getting hurt and can't let go of it, but under his circumstances, you still can't help but sympathize to him as well. Of course, it would be natural for him to hate her, but as the story goes, his pride caused his downfall, really. Refusing to accept the fact that his heart has changed, the things around him slowly come into ruins.

The character development for both of the main characters were exceptional, really. The subtle changes you see in their actions, their train of thought, their speech, it was just truly amazing. Seeing the FL go through a variety of states from naivety, guilt, self-loathing before learning to let go was simply amazing and heart-wrenching. Seeing this development intertwined with the ML's growth was also quite touching, if only it was not too late. In fact, the first person POV was done exceptionally well in the second part of the story, when it uses the perspective of the ML. This is because we as the readers could see what was changing within him and around him, but the character himself could not, which was frustrating, heart-wrenching and emotionally draining, and ultimately; effective.

In summary, this was a really heart-wrenching story, with an ending leaving you with a series of "what if"s.

Most importantly, the translation of this text was incredibly well done. It was beautiful, powerful and without it, I don't think I'd enjoy this story as much. The poetries were translated beautifully, the words flow nicely, forcing me to read from start to finish in one go. Please give this one a chance <<less

All I can say is: wtf. I knew what I was getting into when I started reading it, but I was not expecting to be so impacted by the beautiful writing and tragic story. The translator tried her best (i think she did a great job) with trying to encapsulate as much of the original feeling of the story, but if you can read or understand chinese, I would recommend that you just go ahead and read the original. I know that's what I would be doing now if was... more>> able to understand chinese. I don't know if it was because I haven't cried while reading a novel in a while or I was just in a crying mood today, but I was bawling like a baby two chapters in and all the way to the end. The translator gave her thoughts at the end and she said something that I think perfectly summed up the story: he yujin loved too much and gao fei loved too late. I'm writing this right after finishing the story so my emotions are all the place right now. I can't give a well written review that this story deserves and all I can come up with is: if bittersweet endings are your cup of tea, then go ahead and chug this story. Bring tissues, you will need them. <<less

Well written and beautifully translated. I would have given it a ten stars if there are that many stars to rate. The extra stars would be for the translation coz the story would lose its appeal with a poorly translated work. The translator captured the essences of the short story and delivered without flaw. Adding her thoughts towards the end completes this fine piece of art.

I cried buckets especially reading the portion of Gao Fei's perspectives. That poor guy did not realize his hate has slowly evolved to love until... more>> the end of her life. Even then he does not want to admit it was love or tell her when she breathed her last breath. There is a saying - hate is the 1st cousin to love.

He tried making the last two months of her life sweeter but it was just too short. I believe the love he has for Yujin is not any less then Yujin's oerbearing love for him.

Last but not least, I would this story again and again until my tears stop flowing. <<less

I've been crying from chapter 1 till the end. Been reading this at the office, and both my eyes are red & teary. Luckily I'm not sobbing out loud or I'd have been found out by my colleagues & boss.

This story is too meaningful and realistic that I can't help but being pulled into the MC's emotion.

The author & of course our dear translator really has a way with words, the way they make the story flows smoothly is very brilliant!!!

Thanks for this translations~ Another great short story!!

I finished reading this a few days ago, but I keep thinking about this story, and after I read it again, I finally understand what it is about. There is a lot of things you can't catch in the first read because the author likes to hint at things so you may miss them. At first, I thought it was just a normal story with a forced marriage, but then the second part of the book completely change things.

To read the story from the male lead's pov was something I... more>> never expected. Even though I didn't really like him at first, after I read his part, my tears just keep falling. Even though some may say that they brought this upon themselves, this just makes this more relatable to me, because I can imagine myself making the same choices they made if I were in their position. But sometimes we do not get another chance in life. <<less

To summarize everything about what I'm about to say: They both deserve it.

I didn't cried, this was a good cause and effect:

Spoiler

The guy was force to marry the girl, karma strikes back at the girl and her family.

The guy had actually love the girl, then that's just good for you for being naive with your feelings.

Great book, great translator. And actually my first time enjoying translator’s note THAT much and making me a fan

If you’re looking for a complicated love and hate relationship where you cannot really hate 1 party and feel the complexity of love then this book is for you. Rather than tragedy alone, it’s more like a quite realistic portrayal of love and hate

O~ I shed a tearrrr. Hajma the last chapter was chef's kisses.

4/5 due to the fact I got bored with the first half of the story.... I like being on the pov of the person receiving the love rather than the person giving ya know.

But the story wouldn't be complete without He Yujin's perceptive... I even remembered her name~

Anyway it's a good read for those lovers of short tragedies. Almost like a poem I'd say.

This novel was beautifully written that it made my heart ache and let me cry tears of sorrow.

This author's storytelling along with the translator's notes altogether evokes the sadness and grief within the eyes of the readers.

The dysfunctional relationship between Gao Fei and He Yujin would rely make you question who you'd dislike more than the other.

But I cannot hate it as such because I was brought forward to this plane of drama and misery and I was only able to extricate myself after the very last chapter. It was... more>> an immersive and wonderful storytelling.

Kudos to catharcity for her great quality translation on this! ❤️ <<less

This story reminds me of "Who is the Prey?". I just feel like these would have been the story of Gao Fei and He Yujin but with Gao Fei as the obsessed lover. Still I really hate Gao Fei, a person who never knows the value of something or in in our case someone until there gone😭😭😭😭😭. Highly Recommended btw and I give this an infinity/10 solely because it made me cry and for how much love He Yujin gave but received too late...
