Interesting concept but horrible execution and narrative.

Post-apocalyptic setting. Modern world invaded by rifts spewing monsters and mutating the world. People who awaken are able to develop special abilities and rank up in strength/power via absorbing the spirit power from defeating these monsters. Moreover exotic materials from these monsters and rifts further help steer the world's technology towards fantasy. This novel really lacks world building. No doubt the setting is cliche but at least spend effort crafting the world, convey to readers more about the world and tell readers what makes... more>> it different from other novels. A sign of amateur writing.

Secondary characters and antagonists for now feel more like throwaway characters. They lack proper background, character development as well as interactions between the cast. They feel more like puppets rather than a real character.

Protagonist isn't unlikeable but hes not a well written character either. At best its a pretty shallow character. Nothing interesting about his personality and attitude, if fact I think he is boring. Like all chinese fiction novels, main characters always have unbalanced overpowered abilities. The key here is unbalanced, something I feel that is rampant in chinese novels. I don't mind OP powers but unbalanced OP, might as well make protagonists God right? Anyways our MC gets a kind of base building & empire management ability. The novel's synopsis says it all.

Now the premise of this novel is more of the colony building and management in a post-apocalyptic setting. I feel that its poorly done. In a sense, its too simplified. It lacks technical concepts, details on the geopolitical climate, the survival and social intricacies, basically the ins & outs as well as issues of colony building & management, you get where I'm coming from right? Again, it just all lacks depth. Also doesn't help that theres too much reliance on the MC's building ability which also introduces contradictory concepts into the plot. I'd say its the poor story planning on author's side.

All in all this is a pretty bad novel. I like the premise but poor execution, shallow narrative, poorly written throwaway characters and skin-deep colony building & management plot. <<less

Quite enjoyable, haven’t really seen much of Mc’s skills. But having the survivors that he saved work as laborers so he can construct is really similar to mmorpg games. Luckily, people with special abilities aren’t unusual (although rare) so MC making city stone walls appear out of no where isn’t too bad. I mean, the survivors thinks MC has divine abilities

Things that make me drop novels are the main character’s personality and attitude. This MC isn’t a genius, super athletic, or anything. He was suddenly given a system and rolled... more>> with it. Isn’t pe*verted or arrogant. He gains fame through his subordinates like the people his summons or the robots that was a bonus after building a castle.

Maybe that’s what the ‘misunderstanding’ tag means. Survivors thinks MC is this buff, strong, burly looking dude since he’s the master of all these strong subordinates, but his only ability to build. <<less

Its not that bad actualy aside from conflicting argument here and there

Standard chinese novel

But just like any chinese novel write in modern world it has some well quite illogical argument

Like when MC thinking about who possibly want to stal his technology and he said " the military wont do such a thing "

Well surprise surprise yes they will its common ocurence when military force company to open their trade secreet for military purpose not to mention chinese military were famous for stealing tech

Right off the bat I can tell this is going to be a slog to read. First chapter and we have mentions of some tech that helps people awaken super powers, how was humanity able to do enough research and testing in the short time since the apocalypse started to figure out the super power situation AND start helping people unlock them WHILE fighting off the invading demons that are supposedly beating the military... Clearly this novel has minimal or no plot progression actually planned out and the author is... more>> just winging it. So be warned. <<less

From the premise, it reminds me a lot of the RTS game: They are Billions. The game was literally about building a well-defended city against zombies and contains a lot of features of the MC's ability.

This includes building towers, market system and inns to invite experts. Overall, I find it quite interesting.

The main problem is that it is an OP system based novel. The problem with system based novels is that the system does the heavy lifting. In the vast majority of times, the system gives way more than what... more>> has been done. The cause and effect relationship of these type of OP system is warped and disrupts the power balance and calls for massive power inflation as the story progresses. This novel is one of them. <<less

i don't remember where I left off, around 40+ chaps min. but I must say the author is severely lacking in "brains".

why do I think the author lacks brains? ... more>>
Spoiler

why does the author think that these s*upid 3% increase in stats is actually a lot? since 3% of 33 = 1 it means that for every 33 stats you have you get +1 stat....33 turns to 34? does this author think that such an amount is any different from margin of error? if you have +10% in stats then MAYBE it is worth enough to count but 3%? then it takes so much time to upgrade the buildings to boost the stats by yet another 3%.

in the end after the 3% stat boost piles up like 33 times I guess you will be as strong as merely 2 players/cultivators? since the defence is subtracted from attack I guess it might be an attack worth 3 players/cultivators? can someone be able to beat a monster that takes 6 people to beat if they only have the strength of 2 people? I think not. how is it that the author makes the main character be strong solo at times? does "experience" really make him able to match 6 players/cultivators when his stats are basicly only within the margin of error compared to others? even if he could "match" them why can he defeat the monsters any faster than others when the attack is within margin of error?

if the author had any "reason" within his brain then he would've made each lvl building upgrade increase stats by 10%-30% and each level/tier cultivation upgrade increase 10-30%. also the skills themselves are s*upid for only increasing basic damage by like 3-6%. is there a point in using a skill then? maybe it might help a little but still within the margin of error.

[collapse]

although this review is after it's been a long time since I read it so there might be a few tiny differences, but I couldn't bother to read it again to refresh my memory since the author's lack of reason gives me a headache...i don't know if it was cultivation level or tier and I don't remember if they were called players or cultivators.

if you want a story with consistency and reasonable world layout and story setup this is NOT for you.

if you are looking for a story without consistency and reason and can actually IGNORE ALL NONSENSICAL STATEMENTS without batting an eye.... this story IS for you

I like reasonable and logical stories with consistency.... Thus this is a story that is NOT for me <<less

Kinda disappointed and not much good outlook considering the info dump from the beginning and in the second chapter he shot a pistol five times when in the first chapter he only had two bullets.

If there's such an inconsistency off the bat, I highly doubt the author's writing and story skills.

Well, I do admit that MC not you're godly genius when it comes to a certain things and you can't blame him for that.

He's not born genius so he asked for other opinions which is not bad. Their is a part of chapter that he need to other place not only for personal reason but also to learn from them. For example business and the like. In this way if can be more 'real' than 'fake'.

The Novel is quite decent and it doesn't deserve a one star, the narration from 1-30 is bad but the narration get better as the time passes,

It also had an interesting story, and the world building is quite good, it's good for spending your time while you're bored,

Spoiler

I dropped this however because there's so many texts and so many fighting scenes at 230-265, I thought the MC was just going to manage and build a territory...

A good read and is recommended, I'm now addicted to this type of novel <<less

The novel has good ideas (already tested) but it does it really poorly (the author wants to be overly original and it does more harm than good)...

Spoiler

The system is really weird since it answered BS to the mc's questions about it's abilities and then it didn't speak anymore (from a sentient system who tell lies in half of it's sentences it became a non-sentient system the very next chapter it appeared)

[collapse]

Spoiler

He can summon followers but unlike other followers in all the other novels with the same "army creating system" concept who are created by the system (given common knowledge and a personnality by the system), here they are taken from other worlds (given common knowledge) and bind to the MC by a contract, making them obedient.... But their stories are just f*cking annoying and unnecessary, the authors wants to add some background to these summons while there was no need to since their summons, you just have to develop their characters and that's all.... PS : Ordinary soldiers are just puppets without conscience, personnaly I don't care if they're puppets or IA (but I know that some won't like that they're just simple puppet)

[collapse]

the MC has a normal IQ which should be a good thing but he doesn't use his intelligence at all T-T he doesn't act like the gamer he's supposed to be.

Spoiler

With the help of the system he can do anything, normal people would just fasten his ressources gathering but the MC hope to use ordinary people as his main army rather than puppet soldiers and his summoned followers.... It's super s*upid since he increases other people power while slowing his and his followers strengthening, why divide your power when you can keep it all, given that the shelter he lived in was destroyed because of a treason from a higher up he shouldn't be so confident about letting normal people strengthening their power

[collapse]

Spoiler

The MC use the system like some ultra novice player and not like the experienced player he should be. He doesn't know which building he should build in priority. He build only special buildings while ignoring the common ones. I admits that some of them are essential but some are just.... MEH :-/ should be way better to develop his economy rather than these remaing not so useful special buildings

[collapse]

I like the concept but it was so poorly done (and the translation doesn't help) that I can only give a 2/5 <<less

Decent start if you're into management/cultivation-like stories but the execution definitely gets worse over time. Waaaay too many plot holes. The core side characters/followers never truly get fleshed out. In a way this story is mainly how overworked these people are. He throws 99% of everything on these people and we really never 'see' them develop, we're only told a summary from time to time. Actually now that I think about it this story is like a 4x strategy game. In early game/story you have to pay attention to your... more>> resources/population and what things you build for your budding empire, but once you hit the mid to late game you usually end up either mass queuing all your build orders or having AI handle things via priorities. Either that or your technology simply makes those details all but irrelevant. This story is like a badly balanced 4x game that's in early access and many never get an actual release.

Some specifics -

Spoiler

The MC is always lamenting that he doesn't have enough people. Especially talented people. So what does he do when he decides to massively expand by opening branches in all the other settlements? Well, he just does it... duh! Why sweat the details like they have been the rest of the story?

Followers? Yeah, at some point the author is to lazy to even name them let alone develop them. It starts with twins/tripplets that only get a family name, but eventually they only name the leader of groups of them. Honestly the throw away characters we get pov changes to have more back story than the MC/followers. But doesn't mean they're unique. It's mostly the same thing rehashed. They're poor and the MC gives them a path to a better life or in the case of antagonists they're pathetically inept and get curb stomped one way or another. Usually in either case it's not the MC that does anything. It's his followers.

Spirit Stones/Currency? Let's go on and on about how much he's making/spending until the numbers get bloated and then just stop caring anymore because we were already in the millions. It's kinda silly because at one point they talked about different grade/levels of spirit stones but then never actually put it into use.

I'm pretty sure he summons a pharmacist follower twice but they are never talked about again. We just see more potions show up out of no where. Likewise there was one that specialized in scrolls but there were no details there either. I can't remember if that was before or after the author suddenly came up with contract (s*ave) scrolls to explain away how the MC was able to bluff his way into forcing a transcendent to be his follower.

MC can make flying battleships (they call them planes but w/e) that can (barely) threaten transcendents but can't seem to use the same tech to protect his territory? I mean that would be to OP right? Oh wait he has his two OG puppets that become transcendents.

MC reunites with his family for a few chapters and they're never seen again. Except for his one cousin. She gets a little screen time as she becomes a disciple of the MC's training school and eventually becomes one of his minions too. At first he was super protective of her by giving her a bunch of life saving consumables but eventually he doesn't seem to care much and sends her out on a dangerous mission investigating a cult. Of course we see hints that his mother is trying to get him married but nothing comes of it. The closest we get to romance is the MC occasionally ogling his female followers. Though I think there was at least one time that he thought about the frost mage follower as his ideal girl.

I thought for sure they'd have the other settlements go after his family since everyone either wants to stop his rise to power, his technology, or both.

The progression of time in this series is just silly. As of ch 400 I think there has been less than 6 months since the calamity. Early on in the story the author talks about how slow it is to travel or build things but somehow that doesn't stop the MC's massive expansion or mass production of all the things. At first this can somewhat be explained away by the use of the system but more and more it seems like he's having things be produced by hand... by his workforce that is never large enough, yet he can meet all the demand...

[collapse]

I think the author should have leaned more into the system if he wasn't going to spend time on an increasing number of followers. Have a few quality characters and handwave the rest of the workforce with puppets that eventually get replaced by humans once he has enough power and they have enough training. <<less
