The traitorous general Gu Mang was returning to his homeland. Everyone wanted to see him dead, and it was said that the one who hated him most was his former best friend—the cold and ascetic Young Master Mo.

The rumours said: Young Master Mo prepared three hundred and sixty-five methods of torture to interrogate him with, just waiting to try them out on Gu Mang. They were so varied it was more than enough to toy with him for a year without repetition.

Except these rumours were very quickly forbidden by Young Master Mo. The reason given was that they described him as a lunatic, and were severely inconsistent with reality.

So what was the truth?

The truth was even more unspeakable—

Mo Xi’s identity: the most abstinent commander of the empire.

His relationship with the traitor Gu Mang: they’d slept together before.

Highly recommended!!!

As a fan of Meatbun's books, I started reading this. As expected I wasn't disappointed. The novel is very slow pace at first, but that was okay, it was still exciting. I couldn't stop when I started.

ML- At first he hated the MC, but later he sympathized him and took care of him. He helped the MC to regain his memories. He was a caring partner. What attracted me was his super cold demeanor, his straight forwardness. As a commander, he was brave, always stood for justice without caring... more>> social status. These qualities were praise worthy.

MC- MC, who is well known as a defected general who was smart and brave back then. To repay for his crimes, he was made a prostitude. He no longer remembers anything, almost lost his humanity. His blue eyes, wolf like behaviour (an innocent wolf) made his appearance unique, but at the same time, made me cry.

Spoiler

It was hard to bear how people treated him, it was heartbreaking. He had to endure so much... so much that words cannot describe, even before his betrayal, he was pushed to a corner... it was so unfair, to let one man carry a huge burden by himself without anyone's help... He was such a kind soul, who thought, it's better I suffer than letting anyone take my place instead of me.

[collapse]

Since they were students ML and MC had known each other and had a close relationship, but after defecting of the MC, their relationship gets torn apart. After several years they meet again and then they slowly recover their wounds.
Supporting roles were well played. We could get a complete understanding of their characters.

This novel is terribly emotional, painful. I was practically crying the whole time when I was reading the latter half of the book.

The plot is heavy on politics, war. Ending chapters had lots of plot twisters, but personally I felt like it was way too much to change it again and again. However everything made sense, everything had a reason, even a mere tattoo, a mere token had a deep connection to the plot, no wonder since this is 2ha author.

This book is worth reading!!! <<less

Where can you find a novel that has 90% of suffering? I won’t complain because the pain be delicious hehe.

What’s nice and complex about this is that I have a lot of characters that I want killed but in the end, they did it for a reason. So, I have to think whether they really deserve to be hated. But nah, I just hate the consequences of their actions f*ckers

I feel meatbun is trying to up her angst game in this novel. If you want more dose of angst after 2ha, this is the perfect option!

This is set in the same universe as 2ha but years (lots of years) before the events in 2ha. So expect some 2ha easter eggs while reading this! But also don't forget to appreciate this novel as a standalone. Your emotions would be played all throughout the story. You may even regret having certain emotions for a certain scene or character. The story deals... more>> a lot with what your heart wants vs what your duty entails. Please read this and join the yuwu fandom! <<less

To start off, if you are someone who read Erha He Tade Baimao Shizun, and found it extremely sad, this novel might wreck you. So be prepared.

The angst and pain in this novel are sooo bad, that I had to constantly take breaks to calm myself down. Both the ML and MC are just so pitiful yet so strong and brave, I had my heart broken because of them several times!

The feel of the book aside, the story was just incredible! The side characters, side plots that all lead to... more>> the main plot, the hatred, jealousy, love, betrayal, and loyalty portrayed in the story are just so intricate and heart-wrenchingly engaging that you wouldn't want to put the book down.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes plot-oriented books with a romantic base.

And if anyone wants to know whether the ending is happy or sad:

Spoiler

It is a happy ending... it's just that the book will have you crying until the second last chapter and will lead you to believe that it's a tragedy, before something extremely cliche but also extremely needed to soothe the readers, happens and will put you in a state of tranquility and live a tiny smile on your face.

I'm up to date with the released chapters so my opinion can be taken with a grain of salt.
The translation is pure gold, it's clear and consistent. I don't speak Chinese and English is my second language but I had no trouble reading it. 10/10 beautiful job.

Now the story. Is just so heartbreaking, beautifully crafted and full of surprises. Anyone who has already finished 2ha and loved it will love this one.

Mo Xi and Gu Mang are just so complex, their relationship is deep since the begging and when... more>> you think you know everything there is to know about this two, the story hits you with backstories and development that makes you want to cry your eyes out.

Spoiler

The time mirror scenes just broke me, like for a straight week. I wasn't so fond of old Gu Mang because made Mo Xi suffer but now I understand more. And the scene that follows in the bat hut, is hilarious and painful. I wasn't expecting Gu Mangs feelings to be as deep as they were in the past, and understand his motivations (at least towards Mo Xi) way better.

[collapse]

All background characters are interesting. My favorite being Murong Chuyi and Jiang Yexue. Can't forget my sweetheart Yue Chenqing, with his uncle obsession. And the other characters either make you feel like you want to choke them to death, pat them on the back or scold them like misbehaved children. And the mini theater was something new I enjoyed a lot, since 2ha translation is still ongoing I feel I can grasp meatbuns style way better with this one.

10/10 totally worth the read. <<less

I know that I'm an emotional persom, this usually means that when I'm reading books I fall in love with a character and want to coddle them for the rest of the novel. This is why I think my experience with this novel has been so differeent to others.

The writing is as beautifully heart wrenching and sometimes exciting as 2HA. The plot is also something that had really drawn me in from the get go, lovers separated by class, only for one to betray the other.

The issue arises with the... more>> underlying themes. FYI s*avery is a pretty big theme in this novel, so much so the ML is a s*ave, thats the whole class difference. I wonder if its due to me being a POC but seeing s*avery carried out by the empire so openly with such discrimination didnt sit right. But I thought that if this was as far as it went I could get through it. It got worse.

. Throughout all of this MC doesnt complain though he knows ML must be sad he just sits quiet and does what hes told. And that is a constant theme in this novel. Throughout all of the whippings, beatings and name callings of his so called beloved, the MC does nothing, barely providing any comfort at all to his partner.

Then after his lover, who sure tried to kill him,

I've also read a lot of other posts about Yue Q, and those really annoyed me because while he is cute the way he treated

.

Tldr: this book is good but not if you cant handle brutal s*avery in a broken social system, a ML who is constantly used and mocked either way, a MC who cant get over his own pain and ideals to see his lovers strugfles and characters that are a bit too tone deaf. <<less

So far it's pretty angsty and depressey : (the MC and ML reminds me of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian from Mo dao zu shi. I know this story is gonna break my heart but its just too interesting to put down! And I really want to know how the bitter feelings between the two will work out.

Yuwu is the best novel I've read so far and maybe always will be. I've never seen something so heartbreaking but I've also never seen love so honest and pure like Mo Xi and Gu Mang.

The whole setting is something very interesting for me. I love cultivation stories and the forbidden love between enemies, especial since one is a noble and one is lowborn, is the perfect setting for a completely heartbreaking story.

It's really easy to get into the novel right from the start. The writing is so good that... more>> it even made me forget about the world around. It felt like living the story myself.

Both of the characters completely stole my heart. They're such incredible heroes written in a believable and so perfect way.

I really recommend this so much but be ready for the angst! <<less

Only reading Yu Wu I've realised that our heart also seeks pain to understand the word: Love. I've no regrets. The angst was worth it. If you're thinking of starting this then definitely do it. It's a masterpiece. This is my first review and I'll not hold myself back. The madness that runs through Meatbun's characters is something I'll never get tired of. The feelings, frustration, love everything is so human. It's what makes her characters draw closer to our heart.

Anyways YU WU is 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read. Don't be afraid of... more>> the angst. It's definitely worth it. <<less

it is a hard novel to read, as expected from meatbun, I had to take several breaks to continue because my brain could take only so much details. In general the story is amazing, Mo Xi is a very pained character, I pitied him through the whole novel because it seemed like everyone wanted to protect him but ended up making more damage to him. Gu Mang was a really really *really* strong character, he went through so much in such a short time, he sacrificed everything and everyone and... more>> always got the short side of the stick.

The way meatbun wrote yuwu was like simmering something tragic without ever giving you a break, it's not like there are huge shocks of pain in the middle of the novel, but really short albeit deep punches to your heart, something that doesn't hurt that much. Until chapter 193, that's where she lands her last fatal hit. And I tell you, it left me in shambles.

Once again, I applaud meatbuns way of developing the story, planting hints here and there, and uncovering everything when you least expect it <<less

When it comes about Meatbun’s work, I already knew what is life without some angst.

Heh some angst you said? This book literally makes you feel the pain even worse than 2HA 😭😭😭

If you wondering either wanna start reading this or not, I suggest you only start when you ARE NOT at your lowest point. Gosh, don’t torture yourself the way I do (I read this straight away after finished reading 2HA 🤣)

Honestly, this novel was a great way to make myself suffer. Every chapter just kept getting more and more painful, to the point I had to stop reading for a few days to recover. Although, there are some predictable outcomes and endings in Yuwu, some were absolutely unexpected. As for the overall story, I wouldn't say it was amazing, but I wouldn't say it was bad

This novel HURTS SO GOOD. I like it much, much more than 2ha (which I think is overrated + way too long). This book is still quite long, but every chapter feels important to the story.

The plot had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, as there were so many unexpected twists and nuances. I had some doubts as I was reading, but the ending didn't disappoint; the author did a good job of wrapping everything up, and all the "loose threads" throughout the book actually were... more>> shown to have meaning by the end. There's also some very (VERY) subtle tie in with 2ha (but you definitely don't need to read 2ha to read this, and vice versa).

The characters are so complex, even the side characters. The way the book is written, there is a lot of mystery to each of the characters, and as you keep reading, you slowly gain more insight into their background, history, and motivations. Many characters are not what they seem, but in a way that's not trite and overdone at all!

Basically... this is the most beautiful and tragic book I've ever read. Every single character's story is so tragic. Don't read this if you don't like to cry. <<less

I’ve been holding off reading Yuwu for a few months now, I read 2HA first and then I needed a break from all the angst. I had to prepare myself before reading this.

This gutted me as much as 2HA. I laughed but mostly cried reading this. If it weren’t for the spoilers, I wouldn’t know if this would end in a good way or not. I just love this couple especially the MC. I also felt for the other characters ... more>>

Lu Zhanxing and Murong Chuyi, their deaths’ gutted me. I felt sad for Gu Mang for losing his sworn brother and finding out that he had a cousin which he wasn’t even able to meet properly.

All in all, I can just say I love this book but prepare your heart and have tissues at hand if you’re just like a crier like me. <<less

The story is painfully beautiful like how someone described in the review above. I was so into to the story when I read it for the first time, empathizing with all the characters made it more hard for me. It was hard to hold myself from crying.

especially the part when it's revealed that Gu Mang has lost his memories, souls and his core. And the next one's were when Mo Xi is within the time mirror and when he used jade scroll to go back in time to learn about the reason Gu Mang defected.

In the recent chapters, when Mo Xi exhausted his spiritual power and now his core in the verge of breaking, I feel so sad. I hope nothing happens to both Mo Xi and Gu Mang, they have suffered a lot. They deserve happiness and just happiness.

The novel truly has a great start! I also love the amazing quality of the translation.

Spoiler

From the Second Chapter I can say I hate the Yue Chenqing character. He just seems like one of those annoying characters that are vile as hell. Ffs, you're in the army do your f*cking job, if you want to play around go back home and live the life of a spoiled young master!

These types of characters tend to be the ones that bring nothing but trouble.

Mannn nothing could’ve prepared me for the pain this novel gave me. It’s sad and constant suffering since the start and even at the ending I couldn’t breathe properly (don’t get me wrong, it’s happy ending) but there’s wasn’t even one chapter where my heart wasn’t heavy and in pain for Gu Mang. I just wanted him to stop suffering 😭✋
