A back-to-basics(?) monster evolution novel.

A new VRMMORPG, “World of Yggdrasia”, was recruiting beta testers from all over the world. Ten thousand testers began their journey of swords and sorcery in a new realm, one that was as large as Earth.

At the same time, a clandestine experiment was underway. Unbeknownst to the world at large, 100 secret alpha testers were given bodies of monsters and summoned to the same land.

The girl of white was one such tester. Despite the odds against her, she continued to evolve again and again. To rebel against the real world’s invasion, she would become a most terrible beast, the destroyer of worlds… the Bunny Girl!

“…wait, what? Me?”

Our protagonist would survive, unyielding, knowing no despair.

Entertaining from start to finish, with unpredictable story development will make you glued to the pages for days.

The main character is weak at the beginning, but through sheer will and luck, she managed to gradually become stronger.

The world is described neatly, with background story slowly revealed.

It's okay.
Spoiler

The setting is about a military corporation that has found an another world in "cyberspace". They gather two dozen people with superpowers and send them in to gather mana, which is convertable to electricity or something. However, unlike any sensible military organisation, they decide to kill off their supersoldiers for experiments and then send in untrained civilians, who think they are playing a VRMMORPG.

The protagonist is one of the two dozen supersoldiers, but manages to get away from the evil corporation's grasp after dying, mostly due to bad choices made by the civilians. She is overpowered to say the least, but is nice enough to almost never use her skills after the prologue (which is 20 chapters long).

The writing is okay and the translation is good. The writing fails to address why everyone, including the protagonist, keep making shortsighted or outright nonsensical decisions, but does a nice job of conveying the protagonist's power up progress. Indeed, this novel is best enjoyed as a simple power fantasy rather than the Matrix of WNs it's trying to be, simply because everyone is so s*upid that there is no suspense.

Having read some reviews before and after reading the novel, I felt like it deserves better.

The world building is solid. The plot isn't perfect, but it's taking it a bit too far to say there is a deus ex machina. There is a plot armor at play, but it is definitely coherent with the story.

The most underserved comment, in my opinion, was the age. She is a believable 11 year old. She isn't particularly intelligent, she struggles with her emotions, and her clear-headedness is understandable. I know not everyone was... more>> forced to harden themselves in their childhood, it's something that is and should be rare, but it is no reason to expect other children to behave like you did at the same age. I was a bullied kid until I took things in my own hand at exactly that age, around 2012. I was told to not fight back, and to that kids would get bored if you did nothing. The truth I realized at that age was that weakness only brings people to pick on you, not the opposite. With her life having been harder, that time should have come earlier, and one strong point I want to make is that you are more ruthless and don't forgive others (as a general entity) as a kid than as an adult. Kids that are forced to harden themselves only do so out of self preservation. They suppress their feelings, and only open up over more than a decade. To that, the MC is a very believable 11 year old, especially considering her background. There was a point in my life in which I believed I was apathic, and in a way I was, but through my own belief in my capacity to make myself so. The emotional path the MC takes has many parallels to those of many kids, which is why I felt the need to so strongly defend the novel against these one-sided reviews. <<less

I honestly can't believe they let this 11 year old girl play this game. I'm not joking. I simply just can't see a reality where they'd let her spend half a year potentially losing her mind, instead of putting her in school for gifted children, where she could thrive and eventually become a leading figure in whatever subject she chooses.

To put it simply, the character is entirely up to the whims of the writer. He could have made her a 2 year old and literally nothing would change, other than... more>> a number.

Hey, maybe I'm just making a fool of my self and this is explained thoroughly in detail later on. If that were the case then the writer failed at dropping any hints.

Edit: So, I managed to get through the story by forcing myself to believe the main character was a 20 year old extremely intelligent hardcore gamer.

So how was it? The story was okay, not the best, but was still entertaining. As said in previous reviews, almost every human character introduced are comical over-the-top villains. No evil demihumans, only 1 believable human, a comic relief human, a misguided human, and a bunch of unbelievable characters.

I don't quite understand where the reviews praising the world building are coming from. The most we get are country names, generic stuff about the world ending, and that's about it. No, wait, there was a single nation we were told a very tiny amount about, oh and there were the names of some mountains!

I suppose it's not that much of a surprise, apparently the author only wrote comedies before this. Overall, it's a surprise the story turned out as well as it did. I do believe this could relatively easily be rewritten into, say a light novel, and turn into a solid 4/5 stars. <<less

I enjoyed the story. The MC is totally ruthless but she's still likable and you want her to succeed in killing off everyone who threatens the World Trees.

  1. I honestly don't dislike the premise or the main character at all but, as of chapter 74, it leaves much to be desired. The beginning to the around chapter 40 to 50 is good, but once her mission is solidified and the mysteries unraveled, it turns 1 dimensional. There are some efforts made to keep it interesting past that point, but they don't actually grab my attention and keep me there. I feel that there are multiple opportunities for the apathetic MC to have meaningful relationships but they just don't happen.
  2. With that said, the translation is phenomenal and it carries almost none of the awkward quirks that most have.
  3. I have also obviously not finished the novel, so I am unaware if it gets better nearer the end.
  4. It was worth the find imo, just not the time it takes to finish it.

It's interesting, I like the first half. I enjoyed the journey from beginning to the middle.

There's a bit of edgy moments but story is still engaging enough. It's a good story but overall the elements used in the story is just bunch of cliche plot devices that is often used already.

As for the named characters, they are a bit annoying and specially the males here are annoyingly so full of themselves. As for the unimportant characters it's actually worst, everyone is 1-dimensional since almost every humans are racist mofo and no change of views at all. But well I guess it's just that kind of story. There are also many unsatisfactory parts for me, one of them is according to the story one of the MC's goal is revenge.

Spoiler

Alright, so then our MC finally manage to get her revenge to the villain (it was very unsatisfying tho), but even after that unsatisfying revenge by our MC, things didn't end there, the author still created an opportunity for the villain to Revenge-back on our MC and the villain succeeded on his revenge-plan and succeeded on pissing-off our MC, the villain is satisfied and doesn't care anymore whether he live or die. After that our MC killed the villain guy, but before the villain guy die he was smiling and laughing and the MC looks like a pathetic b*tch until the end.

[collapse]

Welp I quite like the first half, but 3/5 for overall score.

First of all, the translation by yamete is just great, most Yen press releases are not as well translated or edited.

The novel starts very well, I was highly impressed at first. However it gets dumber and more mechanistic and without heart as the story progresses. There is only a single actual character in the series at the point I stopped and she now has no personality. She isn't even angry or sad or enjoying herself, she is just blandly evil. There isn't even any careful planning involved. Humanity in this... more>> series is laughably evil, literally every single man the MC meets is a pe*ophile rapist and probably a mu*derer at best, the women are only slightly better. This isn't because she is in some dystopian prison or hell, random rustic villages are filled with the depraved.

It is just annoying and boring. There is no point to a morally ambiguous MC or story where there is no ambiguity. Humans are just pure evil. The MC is a bland mu*der machine. Everyone in the story sucks including the goddamn tree and I don't care anymore. <<less

It's a bit weak if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong it's a good enough read if you are bored but it's just not satisfying enough.

The overarching story flows well enough but there are many things that are just not explored.

Spoiler

A good example would be her Simple Appraisal skill that even at the end of the story never evolves to plain Appraisal even though all her other skills undergo changes... and those skills are unique while this one is quite common.

Then there's the fact that she never really tried to get any more common skills besides the ones she already has.

Some magic skills and close combat skills would have gone a long way but she didn't even try.

Even if she is more limited because of her race with her unique skills there should have been a way...

This story has a well-executed engaging plot without any annoying drag. You will enjoy the MC's reasonable thoughts and her personality. The characters are realistic and make up a diverse span of good and evil, even within the same race. The translation is sublime - thank you to both the author and the translator!

This story isnt a bad read but it is definitely no hidden gem.

the first arc is rushed as heck. Theres even one point where the MC literally gets an massive info dump via scribbles on a wall. The story changes from a “just struggling to see the next day alive” to “need to destroy this massive corrupt corporation to save the world” in the spam of a few chapters. It was very jarring, I was expecting subtle world building and not getting hit with a rock of information like that.... more>> Just disappointing and screams of amateurish writing.

ok lets be real this story is clearly a self fulfillment story. MC gets power extremely quickly and pretty much stays op for the rest of the story. Sure theres a couple of times where she’s outnumbered but until the big baddie the vast majority of the time theres just no real opposition. Dont get me wrong, Its very satisfying to watch these a**holes get absolutely crushed but theres not really any tension due to MC not really having any friends to worry about.

All the humans are comically evil in this story. To the point where it’s unrealistic, for example elderly picking up pitchforks to torture our MC just because she a beastman and for that bounty, when most of the human population already knows she is a dangerous terrorist is just ridiculous. The way demihuman s*avery is described is excessively cruel. Even animal irl aren't treated like that. Im honestly surprised they haven’t implemented any laws against demi-human cruelty. They would just all go extinct at the rate they are killing them in the story.

The last arc is not great. It was a great opportunity to flesh out some of the characters MC has met so far and give MC a little more heart but unfortunately everyone was mostly only briefly mentioned. Dragons also appeared for the first time but they left the story so fast that I'm confused why the author even bothered bring them in.

The ending overall was extremely unsatisfying. Yeah yeah sure whatever she defeated big baddie but what about making friends or having a real life. She only 12 years old! Let her have normal friends! Just lots of loose ends left unresolved. <<less

Edit: Someone made a really bad defense of this novel and the timing makes me think that it's a response to my review, so I feel the need to clarify.

That review mostly boils down to "she's a traumatized 11-year-old girl and that excuses everything", except that the MC does not act at all as a traumatized little girl would act. Instead, the author uses the fact that she turned into a demon as an excuse to make her completely emotionless and lacking in empathy. the main character of this novel... more>> is arguably not even a character, I call her boring for a reason, it's not possible to sympathize with her because there's nothing to sympathize with.

...........................

A bigger problem is the brute-force approach that the author uses to manipulate the readers into feeling sorry for her. Everyone she meets is a zero-dimensional cartoon villain who talks and acts in ways no human being ever would, they are all so poorly written that it's simply impossible to suspend disbelief and see these clowns as anything other than the author's puppets. As a result, it becomes impossible to empathize with the MC's misfortunes, because none of her misfortunes feel real.

I know that some novels require the reader to "turn off my brain" and I've been able to do that a few times in the past, but I would need to be braindead to be "deeply moved" by this garbage.

......................

And there's one more thing that needs to be made clear here. When I say that this story justifies genocide, I mean that the STORY does it.

This is not a case of a "traumatized 11-year-old-girl" doing something wrong. The MC is not the one who makes the decision, instead, a being that the story portrays as wise and benign claims that destroying human civilization is what must be done for the greater good, the author goes out of his way to justify this genocide and it's absolutely disgusting.

It doesn't matter if it makes sense for the MC to believe this because she's not even a factor in all of this, she just goes along with it because she lacks the personality that would be required to make her own decisions.

The story also does not frame this as her making a tragic mistake or anything, the author actually ends up claiming that the world became better after it nonsensically enough. The message of this novel really is "genocide makes the world a better place".

........

Original review:

Poorly written garbage with no redeeming qualities.

For a while, the story is nothing more than "fights" against zero-dimensional over-the-top villains that get mu*dered by the MC with no effort at all, there's basically no plot, no supporting characters, and the MC is painfully boring. Then it goes from bad to disgusting when the story tries to make genocide morally justified.

The whole "all humans are bad" routine comes across as something an edgy teenager would think is "deep", and the message of "humans must always live in fear or they will become evil" bs sounds like the rhetoric an authoritarian regime would use to justify its own genocides.

The fact that other reviewers seem to think that this novel is saying something about the nature of humans has made me lose some of my faith in humanity, ironically enough. <<less

I love this novel so d*mn much. This novel is honestly amazing in terms of the entertainment in provides. I honestly, had a lot of fun reading this novel.

The MC is a cold-hearted girl who accepted the offer of a corporation to be a test subject of a game. She's a strong willed and merciless character who will do everything to survive and protect what she has and loves. The side characters are interesting. While they don't have much character development, it's not really a problem for this novel as... more>> there's not a lot of chapters and are more drama focused.

To put it simply, this novel is "I'm a Spider so What?" but simpler and without the sh*tty ending. It doesn't have complicated schemes or cold hearted manipulation of any kind. And I think that's what made it so entertaining to read.

Like most Haru no Hi novels, this novel also doesn't have a very complex world building. Instead, however, it really delivered in the satisfaction department. I just love seeing how the protagonist is running around and kicking the a*s of people who deserved it.

It's a very very good "turn off your brain" type novel. <<less

The first half was good, but at a certain point the MCs growth felt stagnated. Sure her numbers went up, but she didn't learn any new skills/magic, and she seemed a bit gimped for the sake of plot at times, even though there was never a big threat to her. It wasn't bad, just boring compared to the first half. The final boss fight really dragged on far longer than it needed to as well.

The ending was good enough, but the story itself felt about 20-30 chapters longer than necessary... more>> based on the MCs growth. <<less

Basically Kumo Desu Ga but with a faster pace, less character development, and depth

Still a good read tho, just the first few chapters feel a bit slow but it gets better and faster after that, and then it goes at breakneck speed until it reaches the climax. Then at the end, I feel like it glosses over too many things but whatever. Still above average overall compared to most Japanese WN nowaday

The final chapters and extras made it a good-feel story for me, makes you think about the absurdness of human greed and be longingly disappointed by our ingenuity. Since it is a short story, don't expect too much from it.

It is a little enjoyable, you may skim or skip some chapters, since it is getting boring by the day.

The story is focused on an albino girl who had gotten herself inside a capsule used for virtual gaming (as an experiment), being a special child who has some sort of power, she was one of the 100 who was destined to be a disposable lab rat. Changed by plot, she was the only survivor... then after that you may... more>> continue reading, since I can summarize the entire story just by a couple of paragraphs, I won't continue doing so.

It isn't as good as Demon Noble Girl ~Story of a Careless Demon~, but still good nonetheless. The MC's personality changes a lot through the story, which makes it kind of confusing, I don't really know if it could be considered good character development or sloppy character development. The final battle is pretty meh, typical shounen jump style fight. What I recommend to do is read at least the first 50 chapters, see if you like where it's going, if not, drop it and move on, otherwise keep reading and... more>> you might be either mildly disappointed or somewhat satisfied <<less
