“The first person to dig ziliujin fuel out of the ground could never have predicted that what they dug out was the beginning of a dog-eat-dog age.

Our entire life was but an ugly confidence game of greed; this is something everyone knows, but that they could not bring to light.

From where did this con begin? Maybe from atop the first clean white canvas sails of a foreign ship that sailed across the ocean, or from beneath the great wing of a Giant Kite as it rose unsteadily into the skies — or from a time even before that: as the spreading ziliujin, like an ink stain upon the earth, turned the great plains of the wild north into a sea of flames.

Or maybe it was when We… when I met Gu Yun in a world all covered in ice and snow.”

WARNING: This novel focus more on politics and Wars and Battles than Romance.

This is the best novel of all Priest's Novel I have Read. I have no words to described it. It hard to find such a good written novel. I really like the story building of the world, especially The War and Battles were so well written, Truly a Masterpiece.

This is my first time reading seme as protagonist (MC) and it was pretty unique and good. I really love the Relationship of MC and ML Although it... more>> Knocks on my Guilty Pleasure Point but....... who cares. Our MC (CG) kind of remind me of Luo Binghe from SVSSS in some aspect
Spoiler

They both were mixed blood.

They both liked someone much older than them.

They both have inappropriate Relationship. One with his Shizun another with his Yifu. The former one is better than the latter.

One is all about "Shizun" and other is all about "Yifu". Everytime CG calls GY "Yifu" I end up remembering LBH.

They both have something inside them that they aren't able to control. Thank god, this didn't end up like SVSSS where uke sacrifice his ass to bring Seme under Control from exploding.

[collapse]

As for ML (GY), he remind me of Wei Ying from MDZS
Spoiler

ㄟ (-᷄ ω -᷅) ㄏTheir level of shamelessness

How they can so seductive.

Good at flirting and impressing girls

They both carries flute and can use it against the enemy, although the way they use it is quite different.

And they both are so narcissist

Well, it's good that GY was not totally like WY. it's good that he found out about CG feeling pretty soon on his own, unlike my clown WY, making us wait almost until the end of the novel

[collapse]

I really love how the story was multiple dimensional. I really like how we got to know the reason for some people action.

Leaving aside the main and supporting characters and even villains, I even felt so sad for some Fodder character which appear only for a while to be killed
Spoiler

like the guy, the small soilder, who died while protecting CG in watch tower. His death was so sad. Only his arms were left. He was only 15 at that time.

For me the ending of a story, the way story ends matters a lot. I really love the way this novel ended. Neither rushed nor lagg. Plus the extra chapter with beautiful story (that we wanted to know) made it even more fantastic.

I really enjoyed the journey but as always in some part I really find Priest description hard to imagine. I have to read it for 2 or 3 times to fully get that scene and what's going on (especially the mecha thing) 😅😂😁.

Well, I'll miss, Cheng Geng, Gu Yun, Cao Chunhua, Ge Chen, Shen Yi and Miss Chen. It was so nice to see them all grown up and getting old. Finally, the story ended where we started from.

Atlast, As a pure Yaoi Fan, I really want to read the "the Beautiful Scene" in Bed, especially when the couple have good amd sexy relationship and great chemistry. It's sad that Priest doesn't write Smut, Although I know and can understand her but still I feel sad 😢😢😢. Once again I have to go and feed my greedy eyes, heart and soul some Fanfiction of this novel with the "beautiful Scene" <<less

Phew. This is the most wordy book I've ever read (and I read the legendary master's wife). From chapter 80 I think I was just pushing through from stubbornness. I was so ecstatic when I finished the last word. That being said, the story was really good.

I loved the world building and the characters with all their quirky personalities. The romance was swoon worthy and the MC and ML had really cute and hilarious interactions. I found myself LOLing and asking "wow did he really just..." A LOT and when... more>> your guard is down from the swoon they stab you with knives and feelings.

Side characters were also very well done. in depth with their own story lines. No lie, I would suffer through more of this story for some of those side characters. I still need to read the extra chapters but aside from the wordiness this was a modern classic.⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pros to the translator and their hard work. It was pretty well done. I can't imagine how long it took to translate such a wordy book. <<less

This is the best romance BL novel I have ever read 😍 Slow burn and the romance is sparsely scattered among the strong political plot. Yet you can feel the strong feelings of the main leads.

If fixing the whole damn country just so that your love can live carefree is not romantic. Then what is ??!!

Priest definitely is my favorite author, she's just amazing and I am in short for words to describe her writing.

The story leans more on politics and sometimes I feel s*upid cause my knowledge isn't so vast. However, you can't help but fall in love with the characters. It has adventure, comedy, lots of conspiracies and a little bit of romance.

This was my first ever Priest novel and honestly, she just blew me away!!!

Protect Chang Geng and his precious Yifu!!! I really love when he calls Gu Yun, Yifu, it's just... more>> too pleasing to read haha.

Plot: 7/5 stars

Characters: 10/5 stars

Also, the flow of character and romance is just so beautiful. It isn't rushed, Gu Yun comes to love his adopted son slowly and it doesn't look or sound weird. The love between them develops naturally and oh, I just love them so much!!!

The translator did an amazing job and her notes are funny haha. Definitely worth the read!! Please give Sha Po Lang and ChangGu lots of love, Shen Yi, too~ <<less

This story is extremely well researched. There's a lot of focus on strategy, politics and economy in a nation dealing with war and crisis, and in the middle of that, bittersweet romance. The secondary characters are deep and lovable, which is something I really miss while reading other novels. Both main characters are imperfect, and so the author can clearly show their growth thorought the narrative until you love them to death. There's a lot of tragic and violent scenes and backgrounds, but they go hand in hand with really... more>> ridiculous and shameless scenes that have made me spit my coffee all over my laptop more than once. I'm so grateful for this translation... It's really good that the translator keeps including notes about the language and the different meanings of some words! <<less

First: You should read this novel. (Use the translation by northwest flower. Net)

Second: It is true, what other reviews have said, that the romance is not as front and center as other danmei that I have read (though it is still an integral part of the MC and ML's characters and the development of the novel). HOWEVER, it is just as satisfying (or even more satisfying) than the others. Why? Because the affection between the MC and ML is equal and they are not afraid to express it! I... more>> find that there is an annoying trend in many novels that start out with a one sided love, that once they get together, one of the couple has to be coerced or tricked or annoyed into showing affection for the other. However, not in Sha Po Lang. Here both the MC and ML are not reluctant to let the other know their feelings and to act on them. They both love each other. They both want each other. They would both die for the other. Though the MC has a bit of an obsession and is clingy sometimes (because of some s*** he's been through), the ML understands that and instead of always getting annoyed with him and pushing him away, he accepts him and tries to fulfill his needs. So, though the sweet and fluffy moments are fewer, they are unbearably sweet and reflect a realistic couple where both people are truly in love.

Third: This would be an excellent book even if there was zero romance. I find that in other danmei, people tend to want the romance so much because the other plot points in the book lose their interest. However, in Sha Po Lang, the plot is complex and not at all boring. The development of the MC through the pilot is interesting in and of it self. That said, the romance still does drive some of the plot, it is just a bit more subtle. <<less

this is a 'Just finish it this morning and couldn't stop thinking about it and really want to reread already' review.

Like many people say this is a War Story. About long rotten country and how the heroes are struggle to cure it. the romance is one of the best romance I've read this year. the leads characters development are amazing. The side people are interesting but the writer keep push them back in the background. I just want all of them in the room together they are allllll fun. Priest... more>> give us some juice in the extras tho. soooo good

the story are simpler than you think. Priest just seem so passionate in telling it that it scare off people. she detailed it like her life depend on it. I FEEL it. kind of amazing.

the writing style is master. it just don't hurt my ADHD brain while read and re-read line. so clear and thought out. step by step. like river. like it's alive and living, go really well with the story.

BUT the story is not without flaws. the major flaw is the lacking of good villain. make the build up tension hang mid air.

this is my first Priest Novel. let's say I'm a little disappoint in the plot department but very in love with the world building and its characters.

Read this if.....
-you interest in reading so many 'detailed' war strategy. Politics. Priest challenge you to catch up time and time again. leave things unsaid, ETC. she seem to enjoy writing very much.
-you don't mind adoptive father/son relationship. it was a major part of the story. don't force yourself
-you like reading about "super smart characters". it was very common in Asian lit. we think smart people are hot AF LOL. still they are far from perfect.
-Many funny shits happen. Gu Yun is leading the comedy here. All Support Characters are fun and entertaining

I find it very strange for people to feel uneasy about the love line when reading this. because at the very beginning Chang Geng never really regard Gu Yun as his father at all. And Gu Yun never really act like father figure. And it was very common for kids to developed crush in Chang Geng age.

More than that they're pretty much fcked up people who find hope in each other. they thought they will never have anybody as their own then they got each other. reading them carefully dance into each other is the best experience so far.

*Spoiler ahead**** thing I don't like

Spoiler

the thing that I don't really like it Book3. We got the war build up for 2 big ass books. We got the chilling war, the devastating state, I got goosebumps at some point.
but the following inner struggle court politics is very weak.
it wad okay if Priest want to spotlight on how smart Yan Wang is. I know Priest want to show us the Reform giant plot.
But to make someone smart they need to win real threat. here we got many easily solve politics. make one think that if the bad nobles are this s*upid why didn't they fall on their skirt faster?
i don't know... It fun to read but couldn't help feel boring to read similar situations through out the book. At last it does pick up a bit at the end of book3

so that why I give it 8.5 <<less

Let me start by saying that I enjoyed this novel. I won't say that it is the best story I have ever read, but it was very well written and it kept me interested from start to finish.

I loved the world that Priest created. It was vivid and bright, even during the dark times. I live for steampunk and was so very excited when I discovered Sha Po Lang! There have been comments about aspects of the steampunk world feeling disconnected or hard to visualize, but I had no trouble... more>> with it at all.

Spoiler

In fact, one of my favorite scenes is that first New Years celebration in the capital. The city in lights, the red kites, the crowds, the colorful descriptions, the atmosphere. It was all brilliant. So perfectly executed.

[collapse]

The story itself was excellent. From start to finish, there were little to no weak points, save for the ending - which I will talk about in a moment. However, I enjoyed the conflicts that arose, most of the battles were well thought out and executed, and each piece tied in well with the next. The politics, the war & military aspects, the hardships of the civilians, and yes, the bit of romance thrown in here and there. It was all very well written.

As for the characters, sadly, I found that I simply could not emotionally attach myself to most of them. At least not beyond Gu Yun and Chang Geng - and to a lesser extent Shen Yi.

I both loved and hated the dynamic between Gu Yun and Chang Geng. I understood, overall, why both of them were the way they were. I felt for both of them. I loved both of them. And, at times, I wanted to shake both of them.
Spoiler

Did the adoptive father\adopted son relationship give me issues? No. Well, not after the time jump at any rate. Once Chang Geng was older I was good. They spent so much time apart that - short of the yifu kink sprinkled in here and there - their relationship always felt lightyears away from an actual father/son relationship.

My favorite moments between them came from the added extras. Those scenes hit the hardest and made me feel the most. Especially Chang Geng's response to Gu Yun's letter. My heart ached for him. For both of them honestly because Gu Yun's reaction through the whole scene was pure gold. It was honest and raw and it made me hurt for him.

However, the line in the book when Chang Geng said he could no longer tell what was a lie and what was truth when it came from Gu Yun - I felt that. Every time Gu Yun lied to him, or kept the truth from him, I hurt. I understood Gu Yun's reasoning. I really did. But when you've told so many lies to the person you care about that they can no longer decipher real from fake - that's not healthy. That's not okay. And that Chang Geng simply went along with it because he knew in his heart that the man loved him, I can't say that was especially healthy either. But they both had their flaws. Chang Geng told his own lies and held back his own truths. Though never, I feel, to the extent that Gu Yun did. There's saving face and wanting to appear indestructible, and then there's simply not trusting your lover enough to know that they can take hearing the truth. Chang Geng, I think, in my heart, could have weathered more than Gu Yun believed he could. But I understand why Gu Yun felt he couldn't. Felt that neither of them could. And it breaks my heart a little.

[collapse]

On a lighter note, Shen Yi, bless him, was simply my source of endless amus**ent. I felt his pain and frustration. This man was tormented so much. Gods I just wanted to hug him.

The other characters seemed to simply drift in and out of the story with no real impact. Yes, they were there. Yes, they mattered. Yes, they had impacts on the story in their own ways. But I found that, overall, I did not care whether they lived or died. Even the villains didn't evoke any sort of strong emotion from me - except Hu Ge Er. She conjured up many emotions for me and none of them were good.

With the others, I grew frustrated from time to time with some, giggled here and there over others, but beyond that, there was nothing. This I found sad because I wanted to love the characters. I want to care about them, but largely didn't.

The ending, as well, was another sad point for me. There was no 'UMPH'. The final battles felt more perfunctory. It tied everything up and was done. Said, 'hey, here's an ending'. Scenes with certain characters that should have delivered a powerful 'punch' merely fizzled and flickered out with a pitiful whimper and a feeling of resignation. A feeling of 'Oh... this is it. Well okay then.'

Overall:

Would I read this again? Yes

Would I recommend this to someone? Yes. Read it. Read it now. You need to. <<less

Beautiful, engaging, politically and dramatically charged, dangerously complex and sweetly romantic, this has to be one of the best action-packed steampunk novels I have read!

Chang Geng is a wonderful example of a character that goes from weak to strong, and as many say "evolves like a pokemon everytime he appears". His early life has been a train ride of misery, but it hasn't diminished his capacity to care for and love people, something that we keep seeing as the story progresses.

Gu Yun on the other hand, is the steady character.... more>> The only development he gets, yet arguably the most significant, is how he slowly begins to place "self care" higher and higher on his priority list, if only to please and placate Chang Geng. But it's clear that he finally has something to live for now, and live happily too.

The plot is tight, political and the palace drama stays very firmly inside the boundaries of realism despite the whole steampunk genre. Every character here is nuanced, especially the Emperor Li Feng. Shades of grey is how I would describe the whole court!

Even the antagonists are well developed, and have victories and losses of their own. There is no easy and quick solution to the problems that arise, the MC and ML have to work and toil for every hard earned merit, and so the satisfaction of reaching the conclusion is really relieving!

But despite the war and battle and politics, there is a good amount of humor and sweet romantic scenes in the book! The relationship between Chang Geng and Gu Yun isn't rushed, but a slow build across the years.

Truly a beautiful combination of all the elements.

PS: Hats off to the translators who have done an incredible job, because the original chinese is on a literary level so high that it can only be regarded in awe!!!!

There're a number of things I love about this book but it could be quite hard to read for many people so here's a heads-up.

Priest's literary style is quite flowery, laced with many Chinese idioms, metaphors and reference so it may seem wordy when being translated into english. Spl is extremely plot-heavy with lots of politic schemes and wars; the romance only takes about 1/4 (or even less) of the book so if you skim through all the politics and are just here for the romance, I wouldn't recommend this... more>> books. It's a plot-focused book with a side of romance, not the other way around.

Even the plot itself is very slow burn, you may feel very bored around chapter 30 (tbh the first time I read spl, I also had to take a break around this part and came back to it later when I had the mood), but please remember, the MC was only around 14 at the beginning, he needed time to grow; plus those chapters were setting-up for the war ahead as it is the EXPLANATION for the downfall of the country. Once it reaches the war arc, everything gets intense real fast and you feel like you have to keep your breath through the whole chapters. The characters are all very unique; they were portrayed with depth and reasons and their development is just superb.

Moving to the romance, although there were not much intimate scenes, it was still written very satisfyingly. You may wonder how the author will transform the love of a father and a son into the love between partners but worry not, it was dealt with very intricately.
Spoiler

Basically there was no father-son love at the beginning. ML has never known what the love of a father was like and consequently didn't know how to be a father either. He raised MC just the same way his father did to him: let him do whatever he wants and doesn't interfere with anything. ML's love for MC since the beginning has always been guarding and protection for the weaker and has nothing to do with the father-son love, thus, created a room for the romantic love to develop. As for the MC, he never loved the ML like a father/parent. He actually had a crush on him since they first met, even.

[collapse]
Are they in*est? No, they are distant cousins, like at least 3 generations of distance and that is even legal nowadays. However, there is a 7-8 age difference. Just like the plot, the loveline is very slow burn but very real and logical.

Overall, please don't be put off by everything I have said and give it a try, you definitely won't regret it by the end. <<less

This novel is one of the best I have ever read. I was crushed when I finnished it and I am really craving for more..

The plot's great, although I struggeled a bit with those affairs halfway through, but I connected the story as it progressed.

The romance is just.. amazing. It's a beautiful slowburn and it really felt natural and mutual between them. Precious.

Additionally, I have to point out Priest's sense of humour... My god, how I love it.

This is F*CKING AMAZING!

This plot is a masterpiece: by having a smart MC and ML the complexity of this novel is high. The storyline presents exceptionally thorough war strategies, politics, economics and schemes (parties plotting against each other, rebellion etc.). The interaction between the MC|ML starts off in the childhood days of the MC and takes the reader through his adolescence, 4 years of separations and then the "restart" of their relationship. It's a very very slow romance without smut or cheesy scenes: it still contains sweet and fluffy moments... more>> without sacrificing the MANLY character traits, staying realistic and true to the respective personalities.

The main focus of this novel is clearly the plot, romance only secondary, explicit scenes non existent.

As plot-twists are everywhere, you have absolutely no clue what the grand plan of MC actually is, which keeps the tension constantly built up. Meanwhile ML's easy going character grants superb comedic moments in between. Very well balanced. Due to the heavy and detailed plot this certainly is no skim-through material, but the translation is very well made, so you can read through this smoothly. [Sometimes the grammar is a little off, though almost undetectable]

And I love the fact that this one of the few BLs that actually has a likeable, capable female character. <<less

This novel climbed top 3 best novel I've ever read in novelupdates. I love it as much as MDZS.

The story has a very heavy plot about war, politics, and military. A very bit romance, it's slow burn, but when it kicks in, you will totally love our main couple.

... more>> Have I said how much I love Gu Yun since less than chapter 5? He is AMAZING! Hahahahhaa. He is God of War, smart, calculative, yet so freakin funny and annoying. Ask his best friend, Shen Yi. LOL

And our MC, Chang Geng, also amazing. He is Gu Yun adoptive child cause of special circumstances, so rest assured it's not in*est. While Gu Yun focus in military, Chang Geng mainly focus in country council, strategically building a country and eliminate enemy.

So our pair is such a power couple.

Please try to read it and enjoy the fantastic ride. <<less

whew, , , idk how to feel abt this novel. Objectively it is quite good but it really reads like a history textbook rather than a novel. When I was reading I did manage to get pulled into the story but it really did take a massive effort to start in the first place and I was constantly unmotivated. After a while I only read to finish the novel out of stubbornness and spite. But objectively, I can say it was still a good book hence the 3 star rating,... more>> just not very fun.

Somehow I just was not able to get into the romance, ironically it felt strange and rushed, till now I don't fully understand how yifu came to love chang geng as well. It was just very hard to enjoy and funnily enough I felt myself skipping through some of the romantic parts to get back to the plot.

I think I also expected much more from Priest, I though she would paint a very complicated conflict between the kingdom and the 'barbarians' and really blur the line between good and bad, as it always is during war, but it really wasn't like that at all. That was sort of disappointing. In the end the book left me feeling pity for the 'barbarians'. <<less

Well, this is first time that I'm going to write a review. So it might be lacking.

Spl is the fourth danmei I read although it was the reason I get to know this type of novel exist and get attached to it. I always thought that it's long and get a lot of time and it won't finish soon... and yeah just as expected it got me three month to finished it while I finished all other novels in just one or two weeks. But what was the reason?! Well,... more>> that's because the plot is just so... So perfect and excellent. What I mean to say is like I was reading areal history book like all the things that mention in it happened once upon a time in past.

Its so realistic and political affairs that happen in court is just so... Mind blowing. It was my first experience to read a novel with this much of politics and war affairs and it got me a lot of time to digest it and put them together and understand what really is going on. When I reach the part about what really happened for cheng gang and how his cursed come.... I was like *wtf?! :-/* and then I started to read those whole chapters again to come to understanding and I was really in awe.... Like how?! How is it possible to write such perfect plot line? How did priest even think about such thing?? So yes it was hard to digest and understand.

About the part of Romance (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`) its really slow burn and like veryyy slow but that's alright its completely alright as much as it didn't have romance and lovelydovy scenes that's what make it more attractive. I mean when the scenes and kisses are less in it you will suddenly go into some kind of blow just with small touches and small whispers of love..... and I should say extra chapters completely compensate us and its enough for me to reread those chapters and eat dog food till the end of my life. (ᗒᗣᗕ) ՞

In the end its really make you addicted, when I was at the middle of story when their whole country was stuck with war and political affairs I thought 'oh god, I cannot read this again at all or my mind will blow up' but you see after I finished it I decided to start reading it again cause after three month I can't let go of Gu Yun's beauty and his smooth and sweet talks, (˘ ³˘) ❤︎ oh my god and now I'm controlling myself to not pour all my feelings here.㋛︎

So to who all read reviews before deciding to read the novel or not (unlike me) I recommend this novel to you all. You can see the power of priest writing skill in this novel. You can see the romance and you can meet the reality and cruel part of history it it. You can see how love bloom between people and how trust come to shape despite being a curse by barbarian goddess. Yes, so please read it despite of it being so long and in eyes of some people being boring because of the lack of scene and mature content. It will be nice experience and a very nice journey full of adventures (●’◡’●) ノ <<less

I finished this story and read it again, and then again. I had a hard time moving on. It’s thrilling and the ML is just awesome. One of the best characters ever. MC, is not as great but he does grow. And for once in Danmei, there’s is a female character totally worth of adoration. The steam punk part of it... well, I love it. This story is just fantastic!

Story line is amazing! And the romance is so few but so sweet! 4 start bc the plot is full of politics! There’s literally a chapter where people were just discussing politics and I am so lost! I don’t even pay attention to real life politics hence why I am reading fantasy BL novels! I still don’t understand how CG feels about his emperor brother.
Spoiler

So did CG really wanted the emperor to die? Did he help aid the emperor’s death?

Overall, still a good read.
