I was a cicada. Now I’m a dragon.

I who was reborn in a far place of a different world, was given life as a dragon. As this world’s one and only strongest dragon.

Why the cicada was reincarnated as a dragon, I didn’t understand, or if I had received life again in order to meet her someday.

For her, I will sing again and again. Till the end of my power, till the end of my life.

Ive never read anything so beautiful. We look at a cicada boi living his short life after escaping the darkness of the underground and enjoying his short life in the sun flying around. Until his life ended and he started again as a dragon. Where he met the one he loves and all the friends he could make because of his unique soul.

Hats of to you author. We sing for you mr cicada.

Wonderful idea, but I can't help but feel like a teenager wrote the novel for fellow teenagers. At least, maybe I'm just not the audience for middle school-grade s*x jokes anymore. The novel has a deep, philosophical vibe that I really like, but the s*x and p**s jokes really just dampen my mood (I recommend the novel "Our Journey to the End of the World" for an example of a novel that has this sort of episodal philosophical tone but that IMO succeeds at the implementation). I'm looking forward to... more>> the author's future work - maybe after a couple years they'll explore more branches of humor without losing their writing touch.

Since lots of people seem to praise the novel, I'll leave a couple examples of the sort of poor humor I found.

Spoiler

Ex. 1: I understand that the shotacon genre of hentai exists. But why do I have to listen to the MC h*mping a tree while the personified tree moans EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER, only for the tree to be called "motherly" right after their s*x? Yes, he's "eating" out the tree. But I'm sure we're all mature enough to realize the author had their fair share of giggles writing that scene. Please no.

Ex. 2: The MC spends about half a chapter comparing his d**k size to the sizes of other animals, 'cause we all know he slid that slider all the way to the right in Cyberpunk 2077 (by the way, the first half of that chapter was about how he wanted to b**g a female cicada, but at least that's plot relevant).

Ex. 3: The finishing move of the MC's battle with a female hero was to p*ss in her mouth while flying through the air like some weird s*x dream I imagine only a teenager would have.

[collapse]

The plot progression was also pretty lackluster. The author kept it going, but events didn't really tie to each other and the ending was pretty halfhearted. The MC might preach for half a chapter about how cicadas are resolute and strong-willed, but the same chapter ended on his addiction to sleeping and two chapters later was about his addiction to eating. The novel also tries to weirdly humanize the MC, instead of cicada-ifying him.

Spoiler

Ex. 1: The MC is supposed to not eat meat because he "has human morals" and "humanely empathizes" with their feelings. He just doesn't feel like eating something other than sap 'cause he's a cicada, don't get ahead of yourself.

Ex. 2: The MC puts a big emphasis on building graves for dead creatures. A bit of Googling has not revealed any major grave-building tendency within cicadas.

[collapse]

Some people could cry because the MC did get pretty long-winded and emotional at the end, but ultimately the big question of "why" anything is happening isn't really answered. It just happens, and the MC does something, and it all works out so he can go back to h*mping his mother tree again. Just great. <<less

I thought about refraining from rating, because I think it might be personal bias affecting my views, but then I was like oh, why the hell not, isn't rating and reviews all about personal opinions? Anyways, from an objective standpoint, I can see why the majority liked it. I didn't. The characters were well-developed and even the message communicated by the story was beautiful, but I just could not relate well. Perhaps, things were a little too bizarre for me. It is not that I haven't read bizarre stories. In... more>> fact, I really like fantasy genres, but there was just this strange sort of disconnect. I admired certain characteristics of the characters, but I couldn't really empathize with them. And the plot also seemed a little strange to me. <<less

it's a good story but this was too short for me to fully enjoy. If it had double the chapters with more development for all the characters then i'll be satisfied. In short, it was too light for me.

it reaches the bottleneck in 4/5 for me but I'll rate it 5/5 so more people will read it. (It's still a good story)

Based on the description alone I know this is gonna be a good one. However, I don't have much expectation as I started.
Boy oh boy, how much I truly glad I picked this up because it really is a gem. It's comedic, poetic and moving/heartwarming.

Truly impressive novel. Perfect for those looking for an impressive short rea-
Heck, I recommend this to anyone regardless of your genre-of-interest.

This is the kind of the story that leaves you wondering bemusedly "What did I just read?" You'll find yourself smiling while reading and than being confused as yet another wacky (and problematic) japanese novel trope is delivered through a delightfully original MC.

The fantasy setting and characters are well developed for such a short story.

Our MC is the best kind of sincere, curious and empathetic. His internal thoughts and feelings are always consistent and well considered given his total life experience. You'll be amused by and come to adore the... more>> various creatures who populate his world. Especially the world tree. :)

If there is a such a thing as a light comedic greek tragedy, this is it.

Highly recommend to anyone with even the slightest curiosity to read this. <<less

Absolutely recommend that you read this.

A very touching and heartwarming short story. You'll cry towards the end and laugh along the way.

A story that evokes this much emotion with such short amount of chapters I can tell you this is a masterpiece.

The story is quite unique because it tell the short life of a cicada that, for a twist of fate, is reincarnated in the body of a dragon. The narration is quite good: not heavy, but not sloppy. All characters showed, from the miko to the hero, from the mother to the new friend and the variuos situation that lead them in meeting our dragon, are naturally introduced and the story is never forced, even if there are some plot twist.

The only fault of this story, if you want to... more>> find one, is that it is too short and so we can't see better the word in which the story develops, but I need to say that it is because this novel is so short that the strengh of the feeling that are exuded is so exeptional.

In just seven chapter the autor was able to make a masterpiece and touching one of the most crucial concept of our life it's not important how long you live, but HOW you live is what relly matter:

Spoiler

「Nyuju, I have a request.」

I told my wish to my friend.

「Take care of Yggdrasil. Because of me she surely will be sad.」

「That request, don't tell..., dragon... ! You!」

「Nyuju. Stay healthy.」

I was going to fly away after my last words but a high pitched voice like that of a wildcat stopped me.

「You... weren't you just born?! Hadn't only three weeks passed since you were born?! Why, why?!」

As for Nyuju's words, I didn't understand their meaning.

Because,

「Isn't living three weeks already more than enough? 」

[collapse]

I found myself weeping (and I must admit that even now that I'm writing this review I'm still weeping a little... ) reading how our protagonist chooses to sacrifice his immortal life for the one he loves the most, how even in the last moment of his life all he could think was to sing a song of love, of true love, for his beloved, as cicada would do, hoping that Yggdrasil would hear it.

Spoiler

Yggdrasil doesn't matter! I want to live!

My body screamed that.

『Please run! 』

The sage wisdom born from the dragon's knowledge admonished me.

It's impossible for you. It won't come true. Only on this star you are the strongest.

You aren't the strongest on a different star. It's a meaningless death.

Don't worry about Yggdrasil, the star will save you too.

So my brain whispered.

You should escape. You must escape.

I turned my back to the red star and though of running away with all my power.

『Let's sing』

Only once. Only the small soul of the cicada said so.

In the body with the dragon's knowledge only the small soul of the cicada foolishly repulsed it.

For your loved ones, I say that you should sing.

The song of courtship, I tell you to sing it to her.

As loud as possible, I want to sing. With all my life I want to sing.

That's right, I'm a cicada. The cicada should only sing.

For my loved ones, I should sing. With a loud voice, I should sing.

I want her to hear it. My song, I want you to hear it.

Therefore,

『Let's sing』

I strongly recommend it. <<less

If youre debating between reading this and passing, then let us in the comment section and shia labeouf here decide for you. JUST DO IT! It has a kinda slow start but before I knew it I was already nearing the end. Know instead of getting shows like “in another world with my smartphone” or “death march” why cant we get this adapted instead. I swear it will be number one anime for the year maybe longer

I'm already close to the end, but it's really a charming little story.

No power fantasy here despite the dragon being the strongest being there is, it's all about it's interactions with the various creatures living near its nest, all written in a very poetic and calm fashion, even the "combat" that takes place is like that.

The translation does a good job at transmitting the original writing and story too, so contrary to my self imposed rule, I have to give it a 5 star, because that's how much I enjoyed... more>> my time with it. <<less

One of the most touching short stories I've ever read. It makes you laugh, it makes you (at least me) cry, it makes you ponder about what is truly important in our lives. Cute, perfect metaphors, funny, thoughtful, amazing, tearjerking. Don't let yourself be mislead by the seemingly cheesy premise of a weird reincarnation story. This one is truly a treasure and I will remember it fondly for the rest of my life.

I understand that some readers might think, that this story is too weird/ childish/ kinda pe*vert, but... more>> for me all these little hints at what it really means to be human and to lead a fulfilled life are just gorgeously executed. Thank you, kind translator, for bringing this gem to life for me. Edit: Min Min Min Miiiiiin! <<less

It's well-written but the story is just... Ehh? He talks about human empathy but he's a cicada dragon? Oh, but it has s*x euphemisms. Lots of s*x euphemisms. I guess that's why people like it... Well, not me.

A rare story makes me cry and this is one of those stories.

There are many funny parts and many silly parts but there are also a great many deep parts and... There are just so many different things.

It's a story that will grab you by the feels and won't let you go until you read the entire thing and process it for a minute.

Give it a try.

'Overpower' yes he was the stronger being, but this is not isekai MC cliche who would destroy anything on his way

This story is about comedy & romance, it's very very very heartwarming. Prepare your tissue for the ending

You see that score? YES this is true masterpiece

... more>> If it were made to Movie, it can be compared to 'Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso / Your Lie in April'

In my opinion, the 'intermission' is a great ending than the 'epilogue'. But the epilogue would be great IF more story can added on it a little bit, I just want to see everyone expression at the end...

Like everyone would say

"Okaerinasai" <- (welcome back)

Or something at the end. <<less

You know why short stories always tend to be good? Because the author didn't drag the story further. Very nice novel nice pacing and nice developement. Its a kind of novel that will live a long lasting impression of you. One day I will look back to this and will still remember this novel and will tell myself that "ahh I have a good time reading this" thanks for this author very well done.

beautiful, funny, and emotional short ride. The story is short but the biggest reason for reading this is the really good way of this author to induce the feeling he wants to his reader. The story isn't exceptionally deep or intriguing but it was a touching tale.

recommended for all, but be aware that you may need a box of tissue cause onion ninjas are lurking

Wanna see reviews to decide if to read or not? The answer is simple, just read it, it is a captivating and beautiful story, One ends crying with the characthers, it is an amazing work, it´s just as long as it needs to be and just like that cautivates one´s heart, don't let the concept mislead you, and for goodness measure ill say it twice, just go read it and enjoy, stuff like this, can only be enjoyed once in one´s life and it is worth of all the time... more>> it takes, just take it slowly, diggest it finely and dont rush it, with that in mind, each chapter will confer its meaning to you, the reader <<less
