I have no other words for this other than MASTERPIECE. This is definitely 10/10 for me. It basically rolled my favorite themes into one like a grade A sushi. Palace drama? Plotting & Scheming? War battles? Action? Mystery? Smart mc? Intelligent couple? Angst? Fluff? YURI? its all here!

Not only is it well written but pacing, the plot unraveling and characters' growth were all tastefully done by the author. I also really liked that the author wrote helpful notes for the readers if they couldn't read through the subtle details,... more>> that was nice of them. Anyways, , , , its definitely a worthwhile read! A well written palace drama yuri romance set in ancient china, WHAT A TREASURE THIS IS <<less

It's been a while, but I remember enjoying this novel quite a bit when I first read it. There was a number of heart-wrenching moments I loved and the plot is quite rare for a yuri novel.

What I enjoyed most was the FL. Some commenters diss her but... she is literally the embodiment of the 'unfavoured crown prince' trope, just in female form lol. I love how scheming and manipulative she is, we definitely need to have more female characters like her who are not depicted as enemies or obstacles.... more>> Honestly, I wouldn't even call her THAT manipulative. She is just a woman trying to do her best in a world that detests and suppresses women. Had she been a man in a hetero novel, I guarantee that every reader would be calling her the biggest green flag they ever saw.

Even when she still thinks of MC as a man, she doesn't really harm her or try to assassinate her 'husband'.

It's not a romance-focused novel, but as someone who likes plotty novels with just a splash of romance, I found it to be a perfect balance.

The battle scenes on MC's side are also depicted quite well. <<less

Any historical BL/GL will always be a little exciting to read since their relationship itself is like 'Romeo and Juliet'. I always enjoy reading strategically smart and strong characters and this book is one of them. I've already read her second book (Ugly man) and let's just say she's officially my favourite Yuri author. I wish both books could be adopted into an anime just like the 'Heaven's official Blessing' and 'Mo Dau Zu Shi' author (my fav Yaoi author).
I love horror genres and her third book 'My Death God Roommate' is already exciting.

Spoiler

Anyway, I rate this a 4.5/5 because the ending left me with a slightly bitter taste. I feel like the main couple really abandoned a lot of important people (I'm really attached to the MC's circle of friends and family) for the sake their 'happiness'.

I've read this webnovel last year, so I don't remember the exact details... but I do know that this story makes me feel conflicted.

On one hand, it's clear that the author is very talented. The characters are complex, the world building is fantastic and the plot is captivating.

But on the other, I can't ignore the biggest problem I had with it, which was the FL. Up until the very end, I had a very hard time liking her. Don't get me wrong, she's intriguing and well-written... but she's VERY cold... more>> and manipulative. While I respect her character, I don't think she deserves to be with the MC, who has been through so, so much. I don't remember the romance being the main point of this story, and the fluff was close to nonexistant. The FL played with MC's naivety and feelings for most of the novel (she had a goal to accomplish after all), almost until the very end, and it felt a little too late for me. The entire time my head was hurting because it felt like the MC had this strong and loyal love towards FL, while the FL couldn't care less and only saw her as an amusing pawn. So if you're reading this for the romance... don't. It will make your heart and head hurts and feel like you're witnessing someone you care about getting played like an idiot, and you can do nothing about it.

So many times I remember mumbling to myself "please just leave, just stop being so obsessed with her... she's not worth it!" At one point I was so frustrated I started hoping that the real FL was someone else we had yet to meet... but alas. In the end, the romance feels forced and frankly, unneeded. It's a little sad how I went into this novel because of the yuri tag, and stayed for plot, hating MC/ML "romance" and wishing it didn't exist.

I think I remember something about FL having a miscarriage too, but I don't know if it was a real one or completely made up... very confusing. It would have been great to know just so we could get a better understanding of the FL's personality and character, but instead it's kinda vague and not explained properly.

So while the story is amazing, it still is very bittersweet to me and I can't give it a perfect score. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Still, bravo to the author for writing something so damn good. <<less

If you're reading for the romance, you'll be disappointed. The two main characters don't actually interact that much in the early and middle parts, and it takes WAAAAAY too long until
the MC's gender is revealed to the FL.

The FL is too manipulative and unlikeable for me, but I love the MC. This story is primarily more about the MC's military journey than anything else, and that's fine because the battles are fun.

I'd give it a higher score if not for some of the conflicts resolving too quickly to be believable, and the story taking way too long to end. I feel like there's too much unnecessary parts to the story that just drags it down.

Probably one of my favorite novels, because Im not much fan of romance (I only like yuri romance) and the wars and stuff. Aside from the fact that they ... more>>

killed the bestfriend and the bestfriend's wife, I just think that they are the best side characters in this story. With the bestfriend brotherhood towards the protagonist saying that he'd give one of their child to her because our protagonist is 'impotent' and of course I think with his wifes consent though its too bad he was not able to learn the protags gender and the part that I like the most scene between the bf's wife and protag is when she learned the protagonist's gender, because in the end she didn't tell the princess although maybe there would be less problems if the princess sknew earlier about that fact

[collapse]

Spoiler

As for what I think at the princess, I think her actions are reasonable, because if you look at pov she is a target of a lot of hate from her brothers from different mothers. Why? Because if I remember correctly she's got more or the same fief as the prince's, she is favored by the emperor who felt that it is a pity that she is a princess because she would definitely become the crown prince if she were a guy, she is born from the empress who is favored by the emperor, she is intelligent, wise and scheming, and she is the sister of one of the candidates to the throne which is not good considering that she is favored by the king and she is on an enemy prince's side, making her a target to the other prince's. So going back to what I'm trying to say, I think the princess action towards our general is reasonable, because she is a princess and our general is a mere soldier at the time, think if you were a prince or princess would you even care for a soldier that isn't even posted a position just a normal soldier that could die at any moment, so if that soldier have a talent to become a general wouldn't you think that it is wasted to be just a soldier that would die when she could pull him (her) to be one of her brothers follower when he (she) get enough merit, she is also naive and talented so how could you just not, and if marrying 'him' (our general) could chase away a pest and pull 'him' to their camp why not, our general is kind and nice, 'he' was also not someone who would force someone to do it so if she (the princess) doesn't want to do it she wouldn't be force to do so.

[collapse]

Sorry for my rambling. And lastly our protagonist aside from that fact that she is cinnamon she is also strong which is one of the things I like in a protagonist she is strong not op, she works hard to get to where she is, and her mind is sharp.

So all in all I like how the characters are written, it's as if they are really alive and living, they have emotions. I like how the story started although a lot of things is happening at the end and also the ending... I don't really know what to say, its not bad but... Its underwhelming? I mean that ending is good too but seeing at how much happened it a bit underwhelming
Spoiler

them living in the village with the bf's daughter, about the excuse that the princess will become a nun and the protagonist lost all the things she worked hard for to be a village (I forgot) I mean it's a good breather considering of what they've been through it definitely exhausting but still underwhelming is underwhelming at least that's what I felt

Where do I begin with this?

This novel was absolutely lovely in every single way. I adored the characters, the writing style, the romance, the plot. Actually, I didn’t choose to continue reading the story for the romance, I continued more for the very intriguing military and political plot. Many people might dislike the battles, but I thought they were one of the best parts of the story.

As a lesbian myself, I adored the way that the romance was written, and the author’s treatment of the relationship. It wasn’t forced or... more>> unrealistic. I loved how Li Xian’s sexuality wasn’t changed or influenced throughout the story. Even though I rooted for the romance between her and Wanyue, I loved how she, as a lesbian, wasn’t forced to deal with or even enjoy a “man’s” touch.

Of course, there were moments in the story that I disliked, but that goes with any story. It didn’t impact my view of the story any less. I adored every part of the story, and mostly every character. The beginning part where Wanyue was an infantry soldier was just as lovely as the ending part, where Wanyue is a ruthless, but kind hearted general.

Sorry, my explanation doesn’t put into words how great this novel is.

Sure, I think that the ending was a little too open-ended and confusing, but I am still fulfilled by it. I think it suits the characters very well. Of course, I am a sucker for tragic endings so that would’ve been great if it happened, but I feel like it would leave the end feeling awkward and rigid. So I will leave those ideas to my fantasies, and won’t project my own flimsy thoughts onto my opinion on the story.

Overall, highly recommend. The length was perfect for the story, I couldn’t imagine it being any longer or shorter. <<less

* Warning: Horribly long, probably more of a rant-review than anything.

TDLR; Built up really well with lots of potential, loses momentum and becomes underwhelming near the end. Romance is disappointing, especially with 85% of the novel leading up to it.

–––

... more>> It started off amazing. You could see how much care and effort was put into developing the MC, from her situation (losing her village, enlisting in the military), to her personality (loyal, hardworking, steadfast), and to her growth (improving herself, gaining close friends and allies, moving up positions).

But then as things progressed, everything that initially captured the reader's attention and the romance many of us were promised seemed to fall short.

I loved their interactions at first. The MC cared for the princess in a way no one else had done sincerely, while she had been monitoring the MC from afar.

We are shown the how the MC gradually begins developing and realising her feelings for the princess. When she acknowledges that her feelings towards a person of the same gender are very much real and true, the MC had been extremely apprehensive and tried to force them down, but knowing that she had fallen too hard for the princess (which is justifiable considering her circumstance: losing her loved ones, never receiving nor giving any form of affection from/to people other than the princess), she fought for it, hard.

However, here comes the part that I disliked: the princess' character and the romance. She is introduced as someone who is driven to make her brother emperor, and is thus looking for powerful backers, people who she can hone and refine to reduce the risk of betrayal. And yes, you guessed it, she'd chosen the MC. As you can probably tell from this, there had been no sincerity in her actions towards the MC (originally). Everything had been meticulously planned and carried out from the start. However, this could still be justified with her upbringing in the palace environment, where nothing is as it seems and everyone is out to get each others' throats.

Despite everything the MC does for her, and the long period of time they had spent together, there was no indication of the princess seeing the MC as someone she could trust (kind of understandable) or open up to, even slightly. The only thing we got was small smiles and contained happiness from her when reading reports about the MC, but still, the MC hadn't know any of that, so what was even the point? There was no progress in their relationship except these small, but continuous snippets from their separate lives. And when you think everything's starting to get better,
Spoiler

even after the marriage, she had a fake miscarriage, leading the MC to believe she had some sort of affection towards the person she was supposed to marry before the MC. She doesn't inform her beforehand or reassure her or anything like that; she had to be persuaded by her head maid (?) before even considering telling the MC.

[collapse]

The MC who's head over heels for the princess isn't any better, as she's constantly making excuses for her distant behaviour and being placated with the most insignificant actions from the princess towards her.

–––

I found myself anticipating the battle scenes more than any romantic scenes with the love interest, because for once, the MC was in an environment where she shone brightly, and was actually cared for and respected amongst the soldiers.

I dropped it because of how frustrating and pointless the romance was. It's not that big of a deal before you consider how I have like, 30+ more chapters to go. Seriously, I can't see how any actual, mutual and reasonable romance could take place and be properly fleshed out in the span of less than 50 chapters when more thought and work has been put into literally any other aspect of this novel other than the romance. <<less

This novel is like an unforgettable airplane ride. The plot of the whole story is slowly driven but the fact that the author chose to make this slowburn really adds up to the spice of the story in my opinion, for some reason. I love slow-paced stories like this wherein the precious time which I'd invested, would bear great fruit in the end. It makes me feel like I had spent my time on something worth it. It's also as if I am on a journey with these characters, who're... more>> well-written to the point that I feel very attached to them. That's what makes this even more special; how in depth these characters are.. You can never truly say that they're evil or good, there will always be two sides from the same coin. And as the author said in the story, for us, being born into a more modern society, the medieval FGEP era is way different from ours which led us to a conflict between what's right or wrong. We're all aware that people had rough upbringings back then because of war, traditions, and everything else, which I definitely think had contributed greatly to the realism of this story. It doesn't aim to make your heart feel at ease at first. It will make you feel a little hopeless, but you will gradually come to understand why these important things had to happen, especially with how the characters developed through their experiences.

Spoiler

The romance was amazing. At first I wasn't very fond of Wanyue and Xian's dynamic, feeling that they would've been dangerous if paired together. What led me to think that was mainly how manipulative and scheming Princess Li Xian was, but her growth in the end was impeccable! When the novel had been reaching its end though, I couldn't help but appreciate how the author showcased Ah-yue and Xian-er's unbreakably deep bond. Almost as if they're soulmates. I adored their romance. Such a deep lover the author must also be for her to write this undeniably beautiful connection between two fictional characters. :)) But I certainly weeped a lot when Ah-yue lost Linyu and Yuwan. It scarred me for how surprising it was, especially Lin Yu's death!! *cries*

[collapse]

Lastly, I deeply appreciate how Xian and Wanyue stayed in the underworld together for eternity. A happy ending indeed, after everything they went through.

Anyway, moving on to my conclusion, I loved reading this unforgettable story. I felt anxious, angry, touched, sad, happy and a whirlwind of emotions hover within my heart as I skimmed through the chapters of this wonderfully written novel. It was a privilege to have read this and I hope that there will be many more novels of this kind to be released especially in the GL community. As an avid fan of GL, I rate this story 5 stars and will probably read it again after a year or two. Much love to the translators and the people who have worked hard for this story to be released to the public, kudos to you MVPs. <<less

It's nice, I guess? The MC is really well written and developed throughout the story. I wish the princess had been more fleshed out - her being manipulative and powerful was very interesting but I wanted to actually see more of hers and Lin Wanyue's relationship growing. It took so long for her to find out that Wanyue was also a girl, and when she did it became so rushed. It felt a bit forced, and for most of it, there was definitely some imbalance between what they felt for... more>> each other - and I get it, being a lesbian, I also wouldn't fall for a man no matter how loving he was, but at the same time, I wanted to see Li Xian falling in love with Wanyue for who she actually was, and not who she was pretending to be. <<less

10/5 stars.

The story Setting is very interesting and the plot is so good. I love the characters and their development through the story. It truly was a rollercoaster of emotions for me. For over a week I was glued to FGEP and couldn't stop reading. I can only recommend it if you like an adventurous story with a (in regard of the disguise of MC at the beginning) slight resemble to Mulan. It's slow burn but you won't get bored since the plot has to develop properly. Truly a gem!

i actually finished this novel back in september of this year, but I forgot to write a review!

where do I even begin? This is the first baihe novel i've ever read and it's become one of my favorite novels of all time. It was an emotional rollercoaster for sure and I don't regret a second of it. Lin wanyue and li xian are amazingly written characters and the way their relationship, also just them as individuals, develops over the course of the story, was probably my favorite aspect of this... more>> novel. I truly got so invested in yuexian I was crying like a baby at the end. I have to say that some of the political aspects of the novel went over my head but I think that's more of a personal quirk than the fault of the novel. Even though I don't normally seek out historical fiction at all this novel did keep me very entertained. I can't wait to re-read it soon and experience it again! Maybe i'll even add to this review or something after I do that.

i highly recommend this novel to anyone honestly, especially those who are looking for well written f/f content, please give it a chance! <<less

I can't believe that I postponed my sleeping time for 4 days in a row, I took the whole thing in this novel way to serious... got hooked up right after reading the description, and then read it till very late at night, had 4 hours sleep every day within those 4 days was def tiring but I can't just stop there.

Story: 5/5

Character:5/5

... more>> Drama: PERFECTION (tho I'm not a big fan of drama)

For me personally, this is art. I enjoyed my heart/emotion being like a rollercoaster itself throughout the past 4 days and then that OG ending hit me really bad, I can't help but cry really bad but try to suppress the snorting and other sounds that I make that night, also thanks to those sad music that I played in the background unintentionally... and yah just like pretty much everyone, I feel like they didn't deserve such a miserable ending so I was really grateful that the author makes the extra ending and end the story with "happily together forever" for both of them.

Spoiler

still amazed after 9 times cycle of reincarnation both of them still together, and throughout those cycle both of them always end up in the same-s*x relationship, inseparable indeed... and then this time where both of them lived as Lin Wanyue and Li Xian was actually the last journey for both of them since they're now living together forever in the afterlife after both of them refused to get reincarnated

[collapse]

this magnificent art really hit me hard in my already fragile and withered heart...

PS: for the author, I hope you'll get yourself a loving GF, those author's note really giving me anxiety... and I hope your body will work normally/become healthy as supposedly!! I really mean it. <<less

First of all, a huge thank you to the translators and editors who worked on bringing this novel to us. The translation for this novel is by FAR the best I have ever read. It flows so well, is easy to understand, and also conveys much of the tone of the original. I was constantly astounded while reading at how beautifully it was translated.

Female General and Eldest Princess, or FGEP, is one of the few long and fully-translated GL Chinese webnovels. Much of my praise has already been summarized by... more>> other people. The characters are interesting and realistic, their relationships range from heartwarming to aggravating (just like real life!) and the setting is incredibly comprehensive and well-planned. As someone who's not that interested in court politic stories, this one captured my attention from start to finish. Truly, trying to figure out where the story would go next, how all of the characters would react, was riveting. I usually skip these types of scenes in other novels because they bore me... and so the fact I got so invested in this one is high praise for it.

Regarding the MC and ML's relationship, some reviewers have said that the relationship felt "rushed". I will explain why I believe the pacing of their relationship actually makes sense and is quite realistic:

Spoiler

Before LX knew LWY was a girl, she had a high amount of respect, admiration, and care for her. She may not have felt romantic love, but she considered LWY as someone important to her. While she only fell IN love with LWY after she knew she was a woman, it wasn't like she just suddenly began to care for her out of nowhere. As I read once, 'a love without friendship is a mansion built upon sand.' As in, the foundation for their ROMANTIC relationship was their platonic one, which started in like... Chapter 20 or whatever, lol, so it definitely did not come out of nowhere.

[collapse]

I love this novel and I want everyone to read it right now! Please, if you're on the fence about it, read the first 30 or so chapters at least to get a good feeling for the novel. It is a gem and I hope dearly that it becomes more popular and appreciated as it deserves. <<less
