“Can’t I properly read stallion novels anymore!”

Shen Yuan transmigrated into someone who’d tormented the young male lead almost to death, the scum villain Shen Qingqiu.

It must be known, the original Shen Qingqiu ended up being carved alive by his disciple, Luo Binghe, into a human stick, a human stick!

Ten thousand “f*ck your moms” rampaged through Shen Qingqiu’s heart:

“It’s not that I don’t want to cling to the male lead’s thighs, but who made him so f*cking black. The type who seeks thousand-fold retribution!”

Why have all the female lead’s scenes been forcibly given to him.

Why, as a scum villain, does he need to constantly sacrifice himself, blocking knife and gun for the protagonist!

Shen Qingqiu: “…I think I can still save him, one more time.”

Mo Dao Zu Shi and Scum Villain were one of the very first chinese novels I've ever read. I read them near the end of 2019 but I only decided to write a review now because I didn't know much about cnovels.

Despite reading MDZS first, I like SVSSS more because of how fun the story was. SVSSS is a transmigration novel where the main character, Shen Yuan, dies cursing a stallion novel. Because of this, he was transmigrated into SQQ, the scum villain (hence, the title).

Spoiler

Throughout reading SVSSS, I felt like coughing blood because of how much misunderstandings was caused between SY and LBH.

Thankfully, it was resolved by the end of the story. I also liked the differences between Luo Bingmei and Luo Bingge. I.e. Binghe being terrible in bed, maiden heart, etc.

[collapse]

Understandably, not everyone will like this novel and that's fine. What's not fine is hating on SVSSS because it was compared to MDZS and TGCF, written by the same author. It pisses me off because people don't realise that SVSSS was released first (2015) before MDZS (2016) and TGCF (2017).

It was apparent that MDZS and TGCF are more well known and liked because of the storylines and writing. Maybe consider that MXTX has grown as a writer. Of course, it's not going to be the same. *salty*

I'm not hating on MDZS and TGCF, they're great novels too. But please give SVSSS a chance before you slam on your keyboards. Though I wished SVSSS was longer because the world-building is so interesting, especially in a world filled with numerous plants and relics that have an aphrodisiac property.... (; ̄ー ̄川 <<less

Ok, this one was lit ? and the best thing was MC remarks and thoughts.

I have seen many Vinegar Seme but damn Luo binghe is one another level. He is the Real Vinegar King...... Change my mind.

The only thing I have Complain is regarding the Romance. I would have love to see MC expressed his romantic feelings properly before and not after ending that too in extra. I realized that MXTX makes her Ukes realised their feelings very late and It's kind of hard to tell when the ukes started... more>> falling for seme untill he realise himself and confessed.

In this one, I personally felt (believe) that the MC already fall for ML in Mausoleum Arc (or may be even before) and he realized it and even made excuse (i mean seriously no one would have gone so far for ML like he did, especially knowing ML won't die ever, protective Halo and ML is gay for him....... you know what I mean). Also he Probably realised his feelings for ML at the end of the fight before when ML goes totally out of control. But since it was never made clear properly, I am left complecated feeling..... Especially after the way it ended (Like ML with one-sided love and MC just going with the flow). It would have been much better if author didn't make their first time look like forced one and sacrificing just to save the world. This kind of destroyed the feels.

I was hoping to get some more on Mobei Jun and SQH. It would be nice to see Mobei making noodles for SQH and treating him properly and then PaPaPa (i wanted to see that) . <<less

It's an amazing story. Honestly, I full-on wept in some parts, but it's definitely worth the read. The protagonist is hilarious in an oblivious sort of way and Luo Binghe is just a big yandere puppy. It's awesome.

please take into consideration that this is all my personal opinion, it might not be the same for others.

if i’ll be honest, I couldnt really see a plot. Maybe it’s just me that’s dumb, okay, reasonable. Compared to tgcf which I read before this, svsss was rather plain, in terms of plot and stuff. But I loved the characters, side characters. I like shen qingqiu too but the problem lies with luo binghe. I find him too ooc sometimes. He cries so much. It might be because I have yet... more>> to read finish the whole novel so I dont know, okay, reasonable again. But I read the papapa scene just to read through since I decided to drop this novel and what did I find? My man cried. Luo binghe and shen qingqiu both cried while papapa-ing??? Yes but like my point is I find thing’s a little confusing and the plot a little boring, I didnt find anything major for it to be like wow! Shocker! Plot twist! But anyways, please do remember that these are all my opinions! Oh right, I also find that luo binghe is a little too op like whenever comparison is made between binghe and humans fighting like liu qingge, it’ll always say binghe js much stronger than qingge, a peak lord, way older and experienced, deemed a ‘battle god’, despite how inexperienced and new binghe is idk. Maybe in the future chaps there are people who are stronger and stuff but that’s just what I got while reading. <<less

Ok. So I really love this novel! This is the only novel after I finished reading left a gaping hole on my heart. I mean literally I felt empty at that time because I don't want it to end. The story is great, plot wise is great, comedy is 100% very nice. For sure I will read this again :D

Since I read the reviews before the actual novel, I find this a bit disappointing.

Let's be honest, although the novel is not bad, it doesn't live up to the hype. The misunderstandings after misunderstandings after another misunderstandings is by far too irritating. Is it okay for the author to keep repeating the same trick over and over again? I don't think so.

The MC starts off fine, but as the story goes on, I find him really annoying. He's too insistent with his acting, and that made things difficult for everyone... more>> involved.

On the other hand, the ML is truly pitiful (and later, psychotic). He's dedicated to his shizun, yes no doubt, but he's too s*upid naive. Maybe it's me who can't understand people with such low self-esteem, but his personality really gets on my nerves. It's depressing.

There are many occasions where I want to scream "stop overthinking things all by yourself, just say what you have to say! Talk!" but well, fine.. It's a novel after all, if all the characters are rational, there wouldn't be anything to write about. I got it. I just couldn't help getting annoyed. Especially in the later part of the story, there were too many moments that really tested my patience.

Spoiler

I must commend the scene where the MC did self-sacrificing for ML, though. It was executed very well, I honestly felt bad for the ML and cried litres for him. However, after that scene, the story direction just went downhill and somewhat became even more frustrating.

[collapse]

Anyway, If you're fine with stories filled with misunderstandings and don't mind an unstable protagonist, you might be able to enjoy this novel. <<less

This novel isn't perfect but is definitely worth a read.

Its major flaw is that the romantic build-up is terribly lackluster if not nonexistent so that when feelings are revealed it ends up feeling out of the blue or forced. Also, there is the really horrible s*x scene which quite frankly is painful for everyone including the reader.

That being said, however, there is a lot to like about this novel. The story while not unique has its own flair, the action is well written and sufficiently thrilling, then there are the... more>> likable side characters you wanna root for, but I think the true gem of this story is it's MC.

The MC really shines in this novel, he is sarcastic and hilariously written. He is purposefully written as prejudiced, selfish and self-preservative and that's what makes his whole POV interesting. He does get better as the story progresses though. He is also an unreliable narrator and is often reluctant to admit his attachment to anyone even if his actions often speak otherwise. His internal monologue is gold and the way it almost always starkly contrasts the mood of the events unfolding before him is always fun to read about.

You won't be satisfied if you came for romance, but if you came for the comedy you'll find an entertaining read. <<less

While the original set up of the novel is hilarious and super awesome, the relationship is a little... terrifying, I guess? Not exactly healthy.

The side characters get little to no stage time or development and feel more like props than anything else, which is a pity, because there is a lot of plot background to develop them. It's just not really used.

The whole idea of the plot is actually right up my alley, since I love redemption arcs and evil characters being secretly not so evil- I had a blast... more>> the first few chapters and god I loved the beginning, I laughed almost every chapter.

But I'm a little too faint hearted for the more gore heavy sequences I think, so for me personally this was a little hard to read. Luo Binghe later is just never sane and has no chill or common sense or patience and feels more like a villain bullying and blackmailing the MC without ever fully acknowledging the MC as an independent person or you know... the two main characters talking and listening to each other. Serious communication break down. Rather than a love story, this reads a little more like having to take responsibility whether the MC likes it or not, so only 3 out of 5 for me. <<less

Good side characters, interesting plot, beautifully written, as expected from Mo xiang tong xiu. Didn't like the main couple at all though. Not my thing. Felt their relationship was weird. Luo Binghe was a full blown Yandere, Shen Qingqiu seemed reluctant like he wasn't really romantically interested in him at all, up until the end their relationship had troubles that got resolved in the literal last chapter and I just didn't feel it

There were parts I enjoyed. The dynamic between Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe were cute. However I felt the story line and actual character development fell short.

Spoiler

The ways in which Shen Qingqiu's feelings changed and how his affection for Luo Binghe grew just wasn't believable to me. Honestly, it didn't feel like they were in love and instead it mostly was one obsessed with the other and one reluctantly going along with it. Also, the s*x was problematic at the worst and was not enjoyable for the characters or this particular reader at its best. Don't get me wrong, I'm not above enjoying problematic explicit material, however this just had me cringing instead of biting my lip.

It would be unfair to compare this with the other 2 MXTX novels (TGCF and MDZS) as they are quite different. I can only compare with other ‘systems’ genre like ‘Face of the devil’ or ‘Earth is online’, my current 2 favourite. Scum’s Villain is very similar to 'The protagonist and reader have to be in true love', with exactly same premise about MCs who are readers and who transmigrated into the novel to rehabilitate the ML. Except that ‘Protagonist and reader have to be in true love’ has a... more>> better romance. Here, the romance is virtually non-existent. Up till the very last few chapters, ML was pitifully holding a one-sided love for MC and kept being betrayed and rejected and even worse, killed by the object of his affections. The fact that ML kept loving MC, despite the repeated betrayals, that is quite unbelievable and that’s a massive plot hole right there. There is some fluff and smut at the end but not enough to convince me that MC really loves ML.

The plot is so convoluted and complicated that it is full of plot and character inconsistencies. The system itself was not clear about it’s own rules. Why did the system force MC to stick to original plotline and yet in the end allow major plot changes? Why did the system force MC to stick to original scum character, yet allow MC to OOC just after a few chapters? Why does MC not use the OOC function fully and refuse to kill ML at the abyss? When is it ok to use OOC and when is it not? Is the MC here to fill up plotholes or find other plot paths? Why is MC whining about sticking to the plot, yet complain about plot points remaining unchanged a few chapters later? Halfway through the book it was difficult to unravel the why, the where, the what and the who.

Bottomline, I just loved the last few chapters and extras. Crybaby ML was adorable and all my points are for him. <<less

This is a good read. There's more than one transmigrated character and the system forces him to be in character for the first part. The romance is good too, the MC and ML are not madly in love and lots of misunderstandings happen between them.

I don't know why I all the time walked away from this novel, but after I read it I understood I was so unwise. Really, the story is very interesting and the plot is so exciting! Maybe it is because it was the first novel with an accidental traveler I read in my life, but still.

Just look at this cuteness Shen Qingqiu. So understandable character with natural temper. ... more>>

If anyone will be at his place he will be acting the same way. We have the big brute boy and what should we do? Of course, we will satisfy him to get his forgiveness for things we didn't do but stuck in this villain's body, so... You got it.

[collapse]

Anyways the first impression was like: omg, it is such a fun story, I madly adore it!
Spoiler

But no longer than some chapters.

[collapse]

But what I like most of all in the plot is that even in difficult situations there are added some fun and even romance! It makes reading very enjoyable and your mood, if it bad, will grow up. I think it is very important.
Spoiler

For example in The Mausoleum's Halls of Sorrow when it was dangerous and they ran from those blind creations they lay down in a coffin, you remember what happened then? If yes it is better than great. Because it was the first physical contact +1000 points!

[collapse]

So I really adore it and read again sometimes, this novel worthy five stars!

And sometimes I hear that people say that this is the first work and because of this it is not good, but I disagree. When the writer can describe all emotions and feelings that you feel it as your own it makes the story very incredible. And no matter is it first or tenth. <<less

Honestly this is a delightful, meme-y, satirical work that dismantles the harem/stallion novel genre and smashes toxic masculinity. This is difficult to understand without contextual knowledge, and I give so many kudos to the translators and reviewers who helped edit things and add TL notes throughout the translation process! Without them, this piece does not seem nearly as dense as it actually is. Most of this is translated excellently due to the love from the fandom!

A hallmark of mxtx is that her narrators tend to... more>> be unreliable; there are a lot of details and dynamics that are not explicitly stated, that you must pick apart from her work. As her first work, this is a more noticeable case. The build-up and eventual relationship of the main pairing (and the side pairing) are hilarious and intense. The characters are also generally very dynamic and the main characters are all well-developed. However, I'm not exactly a huge fan of the execution. I have a personal dislike for the character of the MC (at his core he's a spoiled, lazy eboy who, in a western context, would 100% be an annoying redditor). The pacing is decent, this is stuffed to the brim with references and satirical takes, but

the minor characters!?

I'm fascinated by:

  • TLJ
  • LQG
  • YQY
  • SJ!!! I love to dig into a jaded, cruel, yet devoted character
  • QQQ, hello awesome female peak lord here
  • LMY
  • etc,
So I'm a bit bereft right now, especially since I am so starved of content to the fascinating, selfish, devoted, and bitter SJ

This novel was never meant to be a representative work of danmei or some sort of brilliant saga, as some ppl seem to be treating it as, it is simply a light and fun satire on stallion protag novels and obsessive harem-fanatics. Due to its roots in the stallion protag genre, some of the flaws here are intrinsically tied to said genre, and are arguably intentional.

Note: the internalized toxic masculinity and closeting of the MC is a continued and ongoing theme, although reduced near the end. The "moe" of the ML is directly tied to the MC's hang-ups. The weirdness of the female characters and gender things are also related to the stallion novel bs, which is repeatedly revealed in interactions with the writer.

Because it is quite fun and successful as a satirical piece, with its flaws and all, I give this a 4! <<less

First of all I want to say is why people are pissed off that ML is a yandere?? That is the tag so why question it. The story to me is great and a good transmigration story but not that different from others. I had read MDZ first before this so I obviously will compare it when I read it and I admit that Scum Villain fell kinda flat compared to MDZ and from the style MDZ feel more mature and smooth since it is a latter book. I love... more>> yandere tag and I hate it when people bash the ML just for being what the tag for. If don't like it don't read it and LBH is not that bad cause there are worst yandere ML in the genre so if you can't handle him I suggest you not to read things that are TAGGED with YANDERE. That's all for my rant and I think this book even if lesser than author latter book it still have it charm and I love reading it because you can see the author growth in the writing style when writing latter books and not to forget all the funny and cute side character like LQQ cause he so cute with his tsundere-ness but I want him to be happy too and (a small part of me ship him and MC.... if the ML doesn't exist....)

I LOVE this!!! This is my first transmigration story, and I was a little hesitant to start it. I found myself at the start reading a chapter here, then chapter there, not really investing myself in it, because the first chapters are a little too choppy with the translation. But the story was interesting, so I kept at it. About chapter 20, I found myself reading in earnest enjoying the characters, setting and humor. There are some emotional parts, some bloody parts, and never let it slip from your mind... more>> that the story protagonist is a yandere. But as a whole, the story is amazing with wonderful story telling and some really fun and lovable characters.

The only down point I had was that it says this is yaoi, but don't expect any action throughout. There's only one scene and it's in chapter 80. <<less

I want to offset the review below. Come on! What did you expect? The story with tags male yandere and yandere? It's definitely not a healthy romance. And ML has demon blood and human blood coursing through his veins, of course he'll be mess up in the head. It's not only because of abuse that make him like that, it's also genetic.

And this story is the (dark) comedy story. So, joke on you if you take it seriously. It's parody of stallion novel. I think it's quite unique. Don't give... more>> me that crap like "this story isn't unique"..... It's a Parody, duh. <<less
