The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”

I can only say one thing:

Good kid, do not try to read this after dusk.

Spoiler

So the MC is the owner of the horror house. Maybe bcs he grew up with horror things around him his immunity to ghost is quite high compared to normal people. He even has this strong red female ghost as so-called girlfriend/yandere stalker/admirer and their first date was I abandoned school building.

And for me the spookiest ghost in this story is the one related to mirror ghost and bathroom/toilet. Gosh after I read this I even started this habit to open my curtain all day to let sunlight into my room and my wall mirror. I read somewhere (idk if its hoax or not, but u know.... just in case its true haha) that a mirror can store so much yin energy if its placed in dark area that the sunlight never touched.

The plot is scary and exciting. And im hoping for the improvement of side characters like the ghost team, haunted house employees, and that kid who can see ghost, maybe in the near future. Afterall its only 300+ chapters, too early to judge this book. But overall its a good read~

"Popcorn Read" earns a ★★★★ rating. The book starts strong but loses steam in the latter third. Despite this, it remains an engaging read. However, the repetition of "red bla bla red bla bla red red" detracted from the story.

There are too many side characters introduced, leading to insufficient screen time for each, particularly in the conclusion. The main character also doesn't spend enough time in the horror house. Some story arcs drag on and become tiresome, leaving the reader eager for their resolution.
The ending is unsatisfying and abrupt, failing to provide a proper conclusion to the story.

Let me start by saying that I have the weirdest relationship with the horror genre. Long story short I pretty much hate it. I haven't watched any horror franchises intentionally nor do I plan to. At the same time, I've read quite a few horror light novels, mostly BL. No matter how scary they are they always had a comedic undertone to it. They say you have the best laughter under immense mental pressure. At least that's how it has been for me. Until now.

Since the past few days I've... more>> started binge reading this I haven't been able to sleep without a light. Some parts in this novel has successfully raised my blood pressure. But for the life of me, I haven't been able to put down this novel until now, Almost every part keeps you on your toes. I haven't read such brilliantly written horror novel until this one.

Many parts of this novel is thought provoking. They deal with very real issues in our world. The ML is more of an anti- hero that you can't help rooting for. His charm points increases due to the fact that there is only one (hella cool) FL till the very end.

However there is a few things that irk me.
Spoiler

I really dont like how nothing goes according to plan for the ML. For example he would begin the day saying that he has to do something fixed that day. But he always ALWAYS finds something else along the way and gets distracted. Like he mentions a lot of things then does something else instead.

[collapse]

Another things I dont like is the POVs of those who comes to visit the haunted house. I generally skip these because they feel like fillers more than anything.

Anyway this novel is a gem and I'm lucky to come across it. <<less

I agree with everyone that it's a gem. One of the best. I'm going to miss it.

Quality doesn't drop after 1k chapters and all the characters are so good??? Like, the MC is hilarious and genuinely a really cool dude. The side characters are also really likable? I have so many side characters I got attached to. It's also really cool to see the same characters from chapters back showing up again with a purpose.

If you're not a fan of horror (I'm scared easily lol), the horror isn't that scary.... more>> The MC isn't scared (most of the time) so you feel safe next to him like the other humans do. There are a few scary moments (usually from other POVs) and one scenario in which MC had an especially strong handicap, but overall the story is a mixture of horror and heartwarming.

There's a mixture of stuff going on in the novel, so you don't feel bored reading the same thing over again. The ending was pretty good. I was scared that the ending would be messy, but it tied up fairly well.

Romance was minimal, but I felt it was alright.

Welp, I'm yeeting this into the 6 pages of reviews saying that this novel is awesome. One drop in a sea and I doubt people will care about this review, but hey, the novel deserves it even if it doesn't need it. <<less

I’ve read so many webnovels over the years and this is the only novel I can read many times without getting bored. Everytime I get bored reading other novels and ran out of novels to read, I go back to this novel. It’s not perfect and maybe due to censorship the author had to make changes to the novel which is too bad since we won’t know what the novel will be like if the author was allowed to freely write it. It’s still my favorite novel though.

This is one of the very few books which I don't think I'll ever be able to forget. Every single ghost story is well written, has a depth to it and is thought provoking and touching. Sensitive topics like assault, su*cide etc. Are touched and are very well portrayed.

The main plot is interesting and MC is one hell of a sarcastic bastard. It was a combination of his weird humor, livestreams, new ghost stories and that madman Dr gao who made me read 1200 f*cking chapters within 2 weeks. There... more>> are some parts which did not contribute to the main plot but were interesting to read nonetheless.

Side characters were good and That birthday scene (around c720ish) had me in tears.

Romance was a bit forced and weak but I'm not complaining as it was less than 2% of the total story.

Rating: 9.3/10

Translation and Writing: 8.5/10 <<less

The good, the bad, the meh parts.

The Good

  • It's a great horror novel, I would place it end after Ghost Hunt out of all the horror novel in this site. While some arc develop into action/saint MC arc, there's still some occasional horror parts to save the day.
  • It's clear that the author already planned the story (or at least partially), so there's no weird story development and stuff from the past actually contribute to the end.
  • The side characters are interesting.
The Bad

  • I skipped almost all the scene in horror house (both the MC and rival horror house). They mostly act as filler, and while there's one or two that actually contribute to the story line, most are just copy paste with different character name and setting.
    Spoiler

Tbh, with the amount of people fainting and what not in his horror house, the nightmare he got at the last arc with the house being closed after safety inspection is more realistic.

    [collapse]
  • After several stellar arc, it get mixed with 'MC solve problem by solving inner trauma of the ghost' and 'pokemon battle, horror version'. Horror are interesting because makes people fear the unknown while being so familiar to us. It's not great because it contains mental therapy lol.
The meh parts

  • The romance is forced. In both literal and figurative sense. The female lead existence is more like a plot armor that save the MC anytime, everywhere. Thankfully it's almost non existent so it only make it a meh factor.
If you want to read a shorted, more compact version; read Ghost Hunt instead. The horror there is pure horror without mixing genre. If you want something long to read, this one is pretty good.

I found it quite enjoyable and it is firmly in the horror genre with a bit of the system trope that is quite popular giving bonuses. I'd probably say a fair rating is around 4.5/5 as it does have a bit of filler in the latter half and then speedruns the ending.

Like most horror novels the start is the best as the MC is literally facing supernatural entities armed with nothing but their wits. Later on a lot of the fear is lost as the MC has his own ghosts... more>> that can deal with most threats. Having said that it's an issue with the genre as a whole as it's either that or the MC flees in terror for the whole novel. <<less

Was a nice read but tended to be filled with fillers where you can browse to the end of the chapter and you won't miss much. Started with really scary chapters and ended with Pokemon Battles where you have higher level ghosts / more ghosts than your enemies, Overall a good story that ended abruptly due to Winnie the Poop.

A different take on writing a horror novel. Who knew that there could be other forms of horror stories. This novel brought me to a whole new world. It has a good ending for the protagonists. A pity though, there are no extra chaps here. I would have loved to read what happened to the other ghosts and their endings.

The second 1000+ chapter novel that I have read. It is excellently written and an absolute blast to read. Don't mind the reviews about how the story gets repetative. Trust me, the story goes much bigger than I ever would have imagined. I think the ending of this story is (as with almost every novel on here) slightly rushed. However, it was still an extremely satisfying ending that tied up almost all of the loose ends in a logical manner. I highly recommend you give this story a shot, it... more>> hooked me in so badly that if it weren't for the fact that I had to wait for updates I likely would have finished all 1211 chapters in a week. It has great comedic elements at times, but can still be really quite unnerving. Even if you hate spooky stories, I still say you should try and give it a read. With Chen Ge by your side, despite how scary it can get I always felt reassured that our MC was there. My only gripe with this story is how I would have loved if it focused on Chen Ge's workers a bit more, but this is so minor it might as well not even matter. <<less

With regards to web novels of this genre, this one strikingly stood out among the ones I've read before and after it. It's so good that I can't count the times I've had goosebumps while being deeply engrossed in the story. It somehow manages to pull you in without any warning. You'll just realized that you are "in" the story because you end up feeling the dread and horror, amongst other emotions, the MC has whenever he gets thrown into situations with and out of his control.

I highly recommend... more>> this. <<less

This is actually a good novel. Just sometimes the plot can be contrived. It needs editing and it could be a top class novel. Forgivable because it's webnovel format.

Author has a talent for horror descriptions. 4 Stars.

One of my all time favorites and definitely the best one in the Horror genre. I love the main character Chen Ge and the over arching plot. Seems like the story is slowly starting to approach its end, I could be wrong though and the author may choose to continue beyond the conclusion of the current arc, let’s see. You find yourself getting attached to the side characters and some of the ghosts as you read along. Definitely recommend for those who like horror and even slice of life. It’s... more>> not excessively gory or but slow paced and relaxing in some parts while others will get your heart racing as you devour the paragraphs. Definitely in for a good time for any new readers <<less

My dude, my pal, my guy! Listen! This is really a horror novel, terrifying-type, you know? The not-for-the-weak-of-heart-or-for-those-who-suffer-from-recurring-nightmares-type of novel.

It's very well made, I cried, I laughed, I felt anxious, restless and afraid in all the right places.

This novel will be a journey filled with an amazing story, where every nook and cranny have a twist, and it will get to a point where you will expect it to happen, and if it dont, you will suspect even more. I swear, just take my word about this. (And no, Im... more>> not saying that the twists are absurd or something. No! It's the exact opposite thing, it makes a LOT of sense, and it scary me)

Anyway, why dont you give it a try?

Ps: just remember to not read it before sleep, try the mornings, I discovered it works very well in keeping my imagination at bay. <<less

This book is amazing! I've been reading it since there was only 5 translated chapters and I've never once regretted it. It gives me nightmares sometimes, but that's fine. It makes me so happy to see the characters grow and I maybe celebrate Chen Ge's birthday but shhhhh! We don't talk about that! It's really just a good book! I recommend it to everyone IRL and I wan to recommend it to you guys too.

A TRUE HIDDEN GEM.

In sea of tr*sh and cheap writing there's exist something that's truly trying to present a 'story'. Horror might be the only places left for one to seek a neutral and fresh view from soo many weak ass or edge lord that's been plaguing the current trends.

It's an okay writing but has a great story and thick heavy plot, but still has the light subtlety in the form of system.

All in all, the current CN novel still worth reading

Lovely novel which I highly recommend.

If you want to lay back and read something that won't make your balls ache, this is the perfect novel.

Lots of creepy ghosts and some badass moments, there's even a yandere ghost waifu!

Not much else to say really but the novel easily earns a 5 star from me.

Lovely creepy tale. Honestly my crap review does no justice to how beautifully scary this story is. Well-crafted plot with smooth transitions throughout scenes, and amazing unforgettable characters.

I juggle many stories at a time and also have a crap memory when it comes to remembering names... so for me to remember an MC's name (yes, MC.. my memory sucks thaat much) is already quite an amazing feat, yet for this story I remember not only the lovely CRAZY and brave Chen Ge (MC) but also his little ghosts and companions...... more>> that's amazing, tbh.

also I got chillllllllls the whole time I was reading the first 50 chapters, like continuous non-stop hair raising moments. Literally the second my arm hairs get a break, the next moment some creepy scene pops up... ? too good I tell you, this story is TOO GOOD. Tho, I mean, now my hairs rarely stand up bc I think they're either too tired or just 'immune' to the creepiness. Or not. My hairs may be immune but... after I read the story, I don't dare to off the lights in my room myself!! My bed is 1 metre away from the switch but I'm just too terrified lol.

Learn from my experiences y'all. This book scary, but also scary addicting I can't stop reading. Am I an extreme M who loves torturing myself? I hope tf noT ? <<less
