10/10 I know everyone and their mother loves this story and you are probably tired of seeing it in lists with good reviews. But you know what sometimes things are deserving of the praise they get. This is one of those cases <3

pros:

1- Good characters. Good as in well written, and good as likeable and relatable. Wei Wuxian is the most interesting MC I have seen in a long time. In this book, the deep characterization isn't limited only to the main characters; the side cast, and the... more>> villains (I don't even think I can call them that because the novels does such a good job at writing morally grey characters) also have an interesting past, reasons to their motivations, and different ways of thinking and goals... I was legit impressed. It is simple to write an as*hole and loathsome villain, and a very holy and self sacrifizing MC. But to write antagonists that, althought they do horrible things, have an understandable (not forgivable, but understandable) reason for doing it/ don't follow "villain hates everyone trope" and shows that even in twisted ways they have humanity, love and needs, that shows real skill. The MC, WWX, is also not a classic hero. He suffered a lot, but honestly he was hasty, hot headed, and narcissistic at times, and brought some of the suffering he went through upon himself by making bad decisions. He isnt just unjustly wronged, and 13 years later he even admits it and cringes remembering his past self's actions.

1.5- As I mentioned before, all characters have interesting backstories, different flaws, qualities and motivations. That is shown, not only told, and is consistent throughout the story. But the interactions between the characters are also priceless. The book deals with serious topics and has kind of a heavy story, but the author knows exactly when to add humor and make things ligh hearted. I love it

2- THE MYSTERY was AMAZING. I love love LOVE the development, it was original, interesting, well written, without plot holes, I honestly cannot convey how good this was, and this is one of the best parts of the book in my opinion. Absolutely flawless

3- Romance oh god what to say about the romance. WWX and LWJ are the main and only couple, and unlike a lot of story- focused stories (lol) that just put the romance on the side like oh these 2 are dating ok? now lets go back to thing happening, this book does it WELL. The romance scenes dont get in the way of the story, they are so cute, and they don't rely on s*upid conflicts like "anothers person that likes the mc/ML appears! jealousy ensues!" or " character is tsundere and they fight because of dumb misunderstandings" noooo the author is such a good writer they wrote a believable misunderstanding and the MOMENT one of the characters realized what went worng they fixed it. Imagine good characters that are clever and don't make dumb mistakes or fit idiotic steriotypes other ppl could never

4- other things: you know when the translation is done by exiled rebels, that it is gonna be good. I don't know how much of this I can attribute to the translation or to the original piece, but althought the story is long, it is not dense at all, and the pacing and writing is complex and perfect. The worldbuilding is also simple hisorical cultivation world, but I like how this world has a set history " theres this clans, and this and that happened, and x and y are possible in cutivational word" that doesnt get lost in itself and everything is tied together without getting lost on the timeline or straigh up being a plot hole. The story also doesnt just give the MC a major golden finger and goes like " ooh this amulet ot plant that came out of nowhere is a hing now and will save you when youre at your wits end" it is a trope I hate a lot and I love that the cultivation world in this has limits and doesnt pull this shit

cons... what cons? honestly I can admit when a book that I like has flaws but I literally can't find one with this one. the mystery, the characters, the romance, the writing, the translation, the worldbuilding everything was on point <<less

This isn't my first danmei novel but this is definitely my one of go-to novels. I reread this multiple times for several reasons:

1. I like the gong's character, not too aggressive but not too subtle either.

2. The shou isn't a damsel in distress kind. I like that the gong can rely on him as well.

... more>> 3. The plot does not revolve solely on their love story yet it helped to introduce and build their characters.

4. Since sweet times aren't too flaunted when it comes you get the feels and it leaves you wanting for more even if they have given you enough. Greedy much? Haha

So after I watched the anime, drama and listened to the drama cd, I finally read this. I really love this novel to the point that I wanted to read more novels just like this and I might be fired from work because I can't focus XD oh God Help me.

The only thing that disappoints (not really) me on this story is the ending, it's actually good but it made me laugh and giggle instead of feeling the feels, yah know what I mean? XD

OMG THIS IS A MASTERPIECE. The authors's amazing sense of time and how you can understand what's happening no matter how many flashbacks. There's virtually zero plot-holes and each character has a motive and a good reason as to why they did that action.

And Wei Wuxian, like whoa dude, talk about flirty. I really like his character and how he can be straight with his feelings and tell and do exactly how he feels. Lan Wangji is equally amazing, the trust this guy has for WWX is on point. He... more>> stuck with WWX even when he started going insane and killing people, he protected him and suffered for him. LWJ is hubby goals!~

The plot is so fleshed out and done with so much detail, all the useless canon fodder were actually useful and their backgrounds and relations perfectly mix to help enhance the story.

Summary: WWX's soul gets called into some random cut-sleeve cannon fodder, he starts unconsciously helping LWJ solve the mystery of the ghoul hand they found. Over the time they spend together, WWX's past comes back to face him and the mysteries begin unraveling. LWJ is of course, being the kind and always protective guy he is, and they fall in love. (That's what I got so up to Chap 108)

Personal Preference?4/5

Amazing? Amazing

I would absolutely recommend this as a must-have read, I finally know why so many people love it and way it is the god of BL novels. Seriously, give it a read. <<less

It’s just breathtakingly beautiful.
My first Chinese novel and first ancient, and I’m in love. Every version is incredible but the novel will always be superior in my opinion.

It has it all.

Two unique and compelling leads. A cast who’s diverse and full of depth and charisma. A romance to die for, and a beautiful bittersweet ending (happy overall but with its dose of sadness). It can be hilarious at times and extremely sad too. The main love evolves slow but it gives you enough to root for them.

The mysteries are interesting, it took me two reads to fully grasp the whole thing but overall is not that brain wracking. The action is fun and dynamic.
It’s the type of novels that will just haunt you forever, and it’s so compelling you won’t want to let go.

This was my frist novel. I mean, I alred started read anothers, but that was the first one I have fineshed.

I loved this so much. And obvius it wasn't just the romance, but all the history. The way how the charaters are built and how deep theis personalities are worked.

The way the autor shows us how the people aroud Wuxian used him for prove to them e to other that they are good persons. And yes, the devoted love from Wangji to Wuxian was the most beautiful thing that a... more>> ever saw.

My first BL novel of this genre and I must say I an hooked. I really like the characters. Wwx and lwj are both so well written and their characters compliment each other perfectly. Of course their younger selves were idiots (keke). Only character I feel got the shorter end of the stick was Jiang Cheng. His character is so annoying...I get where he is coming from but in 13 years he's been angry and torturing and killing people who remind him of wwx. How is he a sect leader...... more>> and why doesn't anyone stop him all through this time?! And I love Lan Xixchen aka brother reader... he's a blessing in wangxians life. <<less

This is by far my favorite BL novel. Although it did take some time for me to get on a roll with the chapters, the plot is well worth that struggle. Each chapter either makes me feel sad, happy, or angry. It is beautifully written, in the sense of feelings and emotions. The other confusing thing about the novel is that there are times where the book talks about the MC's past but doesn't signify so. Otherwise, I would read this over, and over, and over again.

Great plot, great story. I got immersed with everything that happened in the story. Though, I actually wanted to give this a 4 stars if I counted the extras and how MXTX made MC and ML together at later parts of the story but since it's still tolerable I'm giving it 5 stars!

Favourite novel. Love the characters. Wei ying and lan zhan story is brilliant and how they face so much hardship and finally get a happy ending. Deffo a must read. Also check out the animation and it's called Untamed drama series for it. Be wanted highly addictive once you start you cant stop watching it. To see the 2 main characters on tv and the actors who play them are like the characters themselves highly recomend. Deffo read the novel first then anime/drama next.

What can I say. This was the first translated danmei novel that I read and I fell in love with this story. Hands down this would be at the top of my list along with Heaven’s official blessing...i may have only read a few so far but this is one of the best for me.

An extremely wholesome read that had a very satisfying ending. Great characters and lots of moral gray area. It's BL but is a fantastic romance whether you like BL or not. In general the BL is very tame with a few NSFW exceptions. Would definitely recommend.

Holy rusted metal Batman!!

I am absolutely in LOVE with this novel. I was putting it off, thinking so much hype this could be leading me to a major letdown which will really irritate me. By end of chapter 1, I was giddy and giggling with Wei WuXian's personality, by chapter 10 I was on the edge of my seat with the roller coaster of events, and by Chapter 12, there was no turning back. (Though honestly, the no turning back part happened in chapter 1, I just didn't want to... more>> get my hopes up that early on.)

I'm still early on in the novel at the point of writing this (Chapter 18), but damn son, this is seriously something special. I just had to share my excitement and enthusiasm for such a fantastic read. ♥️

Edit: From beginning to end, this is hands down the most awesome thing I've ever read. I'm in awe of the author. The length, the detail, the comedy, drama, and even the romance. Every little bit of this novel was just inspired. Let me also comment on the amazing translation. Top notch. On some translations, I am stumped by what some passages are supposed to mean, but I never felt that way. It was translated beautifully, professional grade for sure. Big shout out to Exiled Rebel's team for their dedication and generosity for giving us this beautiful story. <<less

This is my gateway novel to the danmei hell and I have no regrets. The characters are sooo well written so the plot seemed like it just weaved itself naturally. I especially like how multidimensional the characters are; realistic and very human for they have motivations behind their actions and can get affected by emotions too.

This is the most satisfying and complete CN novel I read so far. And my favorite one. There is joy, sadness, fullfilment and love. So much love!

The story is well ballanced and it doesn't drag, I could not wait to reach the next chapter after chapter.

The translation is also excellent. Thank you to the hard working team!

Things I wanted to say have already been said in the reviews many times but I still can't help myself from gushing over this novel. I finished this novel a long time ago but only reviewing it now. This was my debut novel in the vast universe of danmei and I've been exploring since then to find another one as good as this one. When I was following the novel, in the beginning, the translation frequency was so freaking low that it was agonizing to just wait for the next... more>> update. So I did what any average person would do, looked for other options. This being my first danmei, I had no freaking idea how to access the raws and what the hell to do with it afterwards because I don't know sh*t about chinese. Then I found out about this miracle called "MTL" (yes I was illiterate like that). So I mtled the novel and died laughing. In short what I wanted to say was, in my entire f*cking life, this was the most effort I ever put into something. I usually have a very short attention span so it was kinda liberating for me that I found something so interesting. It was also the first time that I fell in love with someone else's way of loving. Yes ladies and gentlemen it was Lan Wangji. I loved the way he loved Wei Wuxian and this is how he became the best lover in the universe for me. I loved the plot, the characters, the smut and everything else about this novel. I've already reread it two times. All I wanna say is, give this novel a try and you'll find yourself in a swamp you can never get out of. <<less

This novel transform me from a LGBT+ and Boy Love hater to a Die Heart, Devoted Fujoshi!! Best Novel Ever. A masterpiece!!

And this is the first time I've ever invest in side characters that's not the two leads. Ever in my life have I felt anything about the side characters, but now I did. They are worth paying attention to.

It also have a very elaborate plotline and no plotholes found. Everything just falls into place and it's easy to follow. I also love how much time the author probably put... more>> into the names. Every name have a deep meaning that define each character and shows they're three dimensional.

Though it's slow romance, you can still feel the love. Especially the male lead, Lan Zhan's devotion to the main charcter, Wei Ying. <<less

I already finished reading this story and I love it. Thanks for the author and translators. You really make me happy. I laugh, I cry, and awed at those cute moments of the ML and MC. I also love the others sweet, and tsundere characters! Love the extra chapters also. Been watching the drama The Untamed and soon the anime. More love and powers. I hope I can read more stories like this soon.

Ok. I just loved it. If you by any chance, come here after watching the drama, and you are disappointed because of the ending. Then reading the novel is really what you should do right now.

After finishing additional chapters I still wouldn't mind reading more about our favorite couple or their friends.

Its crystal clear to me that this story will always be in my top 10 novels.

Look, if I could give infinity votes I would, this novel is just something else. Some fridge logic at the end, but eh, its all good. The plot is believable, entertaining, and keeps you on your toes. The characters are three dimensional and intelligent, the main CP is tooth rotting fluff, heart wrenching angst, and smoldering chemistry. I started with the donghua, watched the drama, and came to cry over the perfection that is the original work. Legit tried to find the original publication so I could own this beauty, sigh. It does help to go into this with some background, as the beginning is easier to understand, did skim through some of the extended flashbacks of secondary characters, it is the CP interactions that give me life. Could read another dozen extras of just the two of them being domestic. <<less
