I have read lots of novels from best to worst but this novel Is real shit. MC is always under someone control not Just in one arc every arc the same story. The author is trying to Control people mindset and I have to say is worst type. This novel is my worst experience and wasted lot of time.

AAAAAARGGHHHHH

I really fell in love while reading the novel, but I just can't continue... The character of the MC is just contradictory, wasn't he supposed to be a person who has lived through wars, led an empire and an army ??

I just can't stand the soft side of the character, it's way too soft. Especially for a person who is supposed to live in a world where the law of the strongest reigns, a world of cultivation.

Ok so I feel the need to edit my rating because the story has gone to shit.

It was fine until about the 1300-1400 chapters, with some annoyances here and there but nothing too big of a deal.

But after that... it really turned into something worse than a complete waste of time: yes it's one of those novels that the more you read the angrier you get.

Plot holes, nonsensical plot devises introduced 2 chapters before they're needed, incoherent world building and character progression, conveniently forgetting powers, powers working then conveniently not... more>> working anymore and the author trying to justify it with some bullsh*t reason that none of the readers will fall for (seriously in some chapters the reader comment section can be resumed in two words: pure rage).. It's just tr*sh writing at this point.

Good translation though, and thumbs up to the translator for enduring this mess.

But seriously don't read it, unless you want to get angry.

Old review:

I'm really enjoying this story, it's got some really well done satisfying twists you'd never see coming, and it's getting even better in the latter chapters (1200+), it's at the point where I just want to keep reading it to find out what happens next, which is what I've been doing for almost 1 year every day! Good entertainment for sure, most other novels I drop pretty quick.

The world-building is alright and mostly consistent. There's the usual "next world is on a completely different level" you see on CN novels. Accompanying the MC's progress as he gets stronger feels satisfying.

Despite most characters (even the fodder) having about 20% more brainpower compared to the vast majority of other novels here, some parts are still frustrating to read, mostly because of some s*upid decisions the MC makes. This happens more in the earlier chapters (<800) as the latter decisions are more logical in the context of the situation they occur in. These plot situations can sometimes be a bit forced.

There's a romance (the bad one) that's been written about in other reviews and it's really annoying in the earlier chapters, but you get used to it as you start understanding the thought process of both parties. Still, this is one of the more negative aspects about this novel. Normally I am unable to ignore these kinds of things (same with illogical plot-lines as mentioned above) and just drop those novels, but somehow this one still has me immersed in it. Maybe I just like the setting and the overall plot enough to ignore the shortcomings.

In a context of consumer entertainment value, considering that I'd rate most of the novels here on NU a 2.0-2.5 (even most of the ones that get 4.5 on average are usually a 3 at best), my rating for Heaven's Devourer would be undecided between a 3.5 and a 4.0. <<less

Had a lot of potentials but the author chose the safe route and be generic. The novel would build up a nice story and decent character in a "region" of the story but then the MC would be wisp away to another one where the level cap is increased... Just like 99% of the cultivation novel on this site. I mean the side characters are decent but the author never develops further instead introducing tons and tons of superfluous characters that will be inevitably discarded. Some of the story arcs... more>> are excellent but others feel like fillers. After reaching c573 I've had it. Another s*upid filler arc where everyone underestimate the protagonist only for him to come out on top in the end. It's so generic and boring. <<less

Author of this novel wrote 4 novels (2 finished and 2 ongoing).. Even though this isn't his first novel, it felt like a first novel from a new author for me.
The novel's main plot was neither extraordinary nor any common run of the mill story to entertain readers. Still he could've done much better given the skeleton of the story picked up.

First of all I missed the tag "naive protagonist" under this novel, or else I might not even have picked it up in the fist place, but I cruised through till the end as I wanted to take notes for myself how much it could be improved at certain points (ofcourse I am just an arm-chair strategist, with zero writing skills).

Just a few points I'll focus on..

MC is not bright, there are more than dozen bookmarks where I noted him as moron and an idiot not even recognizing obvious enemy plots.

Atleast he won't become very bright at times to counter enemies ingenious plots and almost always falls for schemes.

*Hostage situation* The thing I hate most about the novel is MC is threatened dozens (even more) of time with his family and friends to give into AYM (arrogant young masters/misses) & some slightly powerful enemies even though he could easily run away from them. Worst thing is he almost always gives in until he is pushed to a dead end. Worst thing is he never takes revenge on any of those fellows unless they once again come back to push him to a wall.
If you like your MC to take revenge for any grievance, this is definitely not for you.
As our MC is *idiot*, even after his family and friends being threatened multiple times in first arc, he (and author) never once thought about relocating them to be rid of such future hostage situations.

*Not much character development* As the plot progresses, MC's character isn't much changed and as his cultivation increases and thousands of years passes, any other MC would easily be able to figure out good/bad people easily (compared to their earlier stages) after suffering so many set backs. Even after being deceived many a times he still believes in people without many precautions. Neither does he improve in understanding overall picture.

MC's scheming enemies often become dumb and let MC escape
Spoiler

Given the scheming nature of Yan Huang emperor, he could've easily publicized about heaven devouring beast clone of MC and great ink realm & Xuanzang believing MC after he (MC) knows he was deceived

[collapse]

*Plotholes* I have read more than my fair share of xianxia, but this one remains at top in plot holes in my list.

eg:
Spoiler

there are bunch of inheritances left behind by ancient cultivators but none of them (remnant souls, written inheritances, weapons) tell what happened in the past, and about true enemy.. Which could've saved many deceptions and saved MC from making blunders.

[collapse]

There are many small one which indicate author's inattentiveness, must be hectic job as he finished 1800 chapters in 2 and 1/2 years parallel to another novel

The Biggest plothole (this is the final nail in the coffin) :
Spoiler

The very first sect MC joins when he is weak keeps soul tablets about sect's worthless elders, but as MC gets stronger he kills many young masters and openly disguises as them for years even with the dead fellows' friends and families. Incomprehensible

[collapse]

*Romance* It is there but our MC isn't a romantic and he believes in the concept of single dao companion.
Spoiler

Though there's an ex through out the journey but not much love left after first spat over stubbornness

[collapse]

I still don't get why MC got the top inheritance that he got, he doesn't have a staunch character neither had strong will power, let alone a vengeful character. F*ck, he's not even funny.

A fantastic novel. To be honest, I've grown tired of most CNs; I feel they've used up their tropes, the constant OP is this cool guy, whose silver tongue always shows the one-dimensional baddies whose names get forgotten, if even mentioned, 3 chapters after the MC is done with them.

I don't want to spoil the story, so I won't write much about it aside from the fact that while it is written very well (at least the WW translation does justice to the reader, I saw some guy posting here... more>> that he read the entire novel already, I'm assuming through MTL), it does have it's fair-share of plot-holes and inconsistencies. But every novel that needs to get updated day by day is like that, I don't think any Chinese webnovel is free of discarded ideas that the author tried to implement, and etc.

The thing I actually love about this novel is character development. MC has constant inner-debates, and slowly builds up his confidence regarding what it is he wishes to do, what is his path towards becoming an immortal. Wu Yu, the main character of this novel, starts off relatively naïve. He has general aspirations, and knows he wants to walk down the path to becoming an immortal, but doesn't really understand what it entails. Throughout the story, at least up until to the point where I'm at, Wu Yu keeps facing dilemmas between conflicting ideas or desires, while also finding for himself what he believes to be the correct path. This is a story about a man looking for his own justice, a man who slowly builds up character and turns from someone who only knows how to fight for himself, learns how to fight for what he believes is right.

If you like meaningless villains whose only job in the story is to be a pedestal to raise the people's view of the MC, and an MC that constantly gets underestimated only to show what he's truly worth and awe everyone every single arc, this might not be it. If you want a Chinese novel with western quality, where characters have feelings you can actually feel, not just read off of a page, and a main character you actually can see develop and grow as a person, from a naïve youth to a then this novel probably will satisfy you. <<less

It's good story at first, but jump to deep pit of tr*sh. Had to save the 'girl' multiple of times. Everyone who has link to him is all burden. Everyone was a scum who threatened him for the place he coming from, and he actually buy it, what a ret*rd. There's no genius here, only dumb MC to fall in multiple scam. He should kill the 'ex' cleanly from the start! I practically skip every time Nangong Wei was involved since her betrayal.

The quartet companion, the three is never really... more>> of help for him, instead become straight burden from the start, especially Luo Pin, the girl he likes. They always a burden and author keeps them till the end. Heaven's devourer should be above the heaven's equal, but then MC using the monkey skill more and more, defeating the main title of the novel itself (I think this one is major blunder from author part). What lame excuse, won't use the demon's emperor body, resulting him to go straight to abyss of torture right after (like I said s*upid MC, with unreasonable excuse).

He used to triumph anyone, but later on Author cuts that. There's no precedence immortal king defeat immortal emperor, but later in late story, quite a few immortal emperors descendant actually also have that kind of power. In the story, couple of times, the 's*upid' author call for amnesia, and change many facts around. The MC even got defeated 100 chapter less to end of story, makes me want to throw up this story already. If it's at the beginning or probably about in the middle of story it was still OK, and I can't accept that. Lame, lame, lame story. Don't read it, and remember the author's name, probably produce same shitty novels <<less

The logic is flawed, character action/reaction does not make any sense, the flow of event is unnatural, there is at least one of those three in almost EVERY chapter. There are also a few inconsistencies and I don't really like the MC personality (no fatal flaw though he is a little too s*upid for me). Also sometimes there are no consequences to certain action. Example : (Minor spoiler) ... more>>
Spoiler

The sect protector [2nd in sect] blatantly violated sect rules in front of a lot of people, after that MC killed the disciple (also violate sect rule) of that sect protector (SP). Than the SP tried to kill MC because he killed her disciple, before she succeed the sect leader [1st in sect, the strongest in sect] came and saved the MC and make him his disciple. After that, there must be some consequences for SP for breaking the sect rules and tried to kill sect leader people, right?? Nope, nothing at all. The SP just leave freely without care, and the book indicated that it is not the first time they fight like this.

Among the worst novel i've reas, which means a lot as i've read a lot of novels and I reached arpund 1/3 of this novel length maybe?. Nevertheless, I cannot see what drives the MC goal toward immortality despitehe always mention that it is his goal.

The fact that he can jump power level to defeat one upper big realm is pretty much interesting in the beginning but it start to become boring as it repeats multiple times, and make you wonder why he is so slow catching up (which... more>> is not the truth considering the time) but the facts he defeats effortlessly while in lower realm make you think so. If other author can make it interesting, why can this author do the same. <<less

Bros before hoes. I can respect that. As compatible as the protagonists Tao is with his demon buddy, they should be Tao partners. His buddy could just grow a v*gina once they're a bit stronger so it's not gay.

Or it could just be gay.

I'm shipping on the protag and his demon buddy.

I would prefer if they grew a v*gina though.

It was an interesting read, though I did stop after he set off for the new continent.

As you'd expect, the author is part of the Sun Wukong idolization group. Even MC's weapon was a staff and his cultivation inherits 'ape' iirc.

Just keep in mind that the world separates the mortals from those aiming for immortality. Though its peculiar that nations rely on these sects which contradicts the concept of abstaining from mortal affairs.

MC is slow. Only decides to become an immortal due to inheritance.

QHe kills based on what he thinks is right and wrong. He sticks to his ideals. He doesn't hate anyone only gets angry due to his weakness because he understands it's a man eat man world and if he can't protect or fight for the things he believes in then they shouldn't be his ideals.

A lot of MCs enemies and friends he makes are ignorant which don't shares the same ideals due to sheltered living.

He is two inheritances that... more>> are from immortals (body cultivation and the Ying yang energy cultivation), soul cultivation is him choosing is path (his ideals and goals which effects his understanding of the DOA as far (Ch 300)).

The writer doesn't push novel forward with a woman who gets taken away or moves due to his one weakness.

Novel is very dark. Similar to warlock of the magus world. Relationships are open but not to the woman in high positions as they have a role to play in the family. <<less

Have you ever wonder why sects of high caliber haven't gonr extinct already with so many conceited young masters? Have you ever like RWX's aunt protesting the behavior of protagonist on a Chinese LN? Have you ever wonder why anyone outside of protagonist is like an NPC in a RPG, never have any intelligent on MC after doing things so big?

I think this LN may suit you.

The story sweet so far. I like how many of the characters is behaving like how a normal wise person would do.

Of course, love... more>> and pride can cloud someone's judgement. Which is normal. I've seen it in real world. That's why, I can understand some motivations of each character.

The translation is great as you would expect from WW site. I can read the story without ever feel confused.

Kudos to the translator and author. <<less

The Being That Encompasses
I hate this main character he is so hang up on his exits so infuriating, one time was enough the second time was ok the third time was creepy but till now he is still doing this??like bro you already have someone you already love why are you so hang-up on someone who doesn't want, love or even give a sh*t about you, I know his Dao is steadfast and righteous in a way but the author wrote him like some overly infatuated confused guy with no standing in his... more>> relationships. Like bro can kill people who are 8 times above his level but cant stop thinking about a girl who wants to kill him and to make matters worse he still has the dragon that he wants and had proposed to like bro just stop you look desperate. Even if you try to sound me out telling me that Dao partners are eternal and he is supposed to wait to get over it but no no no you cant convince me, he was embarrassed publicly by her she hard no remorse respect and love for him, she I literally trying to kill him just to throw a tantrum and bro is still hang-up with wanting her, I'm sorry but Wu yu IS THE WORST MAIN CHARACTER OF ALL time in regards to love interests and love story progression. I'm so angry and fed-up and I'm only holding on because I love the monkey king and I want to see what happened to him for him to leave his legacy to a pu*sy punk bit*h like Wu Yu. I know in Wu Yu's defense that the girl is his first love but even I am not that hang-up on my first love its to the point that it could be considered an obsession. He has pissed me off for like 400 chapters and I'm so close to dropping this, the only person funny is just the pig and the spirit inside the ruyi jingu bang, but Wu YU is actually total tr*sh if you remove his cultivation feats, he has no story or love progression he is so wishy washy to the point it seems like the author didn't have a definitive outlook to his main character, even the side character and villains are better than him. <<less

What a shame... It started above average, but suffered from the curse of rushed endings, just like so many others...

But let's talk about the pros and cons.

Pros :

-The translation is of a good quality. One or two errors, but not enough to be bothersome.

-Characters have their own personality. They're not all blank slates. ... more>>
Spoiler

Except Luo Pin, she becomes "copy/paste of the usual lover girl". At least it didn't go the harem route...

[collapse]

-Some things are set up correctly.
Spoiler

Being saved by the Ruyi Jingu Bang makes sense, knowing how powerful of a weapon it truly is, or the Immortal Emperor actually fooling WY with his "I'm your father"

[collapse]

Cons :

-Some things aren't set up correctly. Sadly, they're the majority.
Spoiler

It's extremely present in the ending, which is basically a bunch of payoffs without setups. A new great enemy with incredible powers, another powerful unknown character, and so on.

[collapse]

-The hero is a passive hero. Things happen to him. All he does is react to them. Rarely is he ever the cause of the events.
Spoiler

Oh no I've been framed / Oh no someone forces me to choose between friend and lover / Oh no my power forces me to devour and become a beast / Oh no someone stole my body

[collapse]

-Whenever he chooses something, there is too often no consequence from his action. However, there can be a consequence for someone/something else's action over it. [No consequence over trading the Ruyi Jingu Bang for Ming Long's life, but consequences over the RJB deciding to go back to him anyway]

-The MC probably has the IQ of a ret*rded oyster. He gets fooled way too easily.
Spoiler

Once again, especially present at the end when the megamonk fools him.

[collapse]

-There are events where someone is introduced to the story while something already existing could have easily fit the bill.
Spoiler

the filan enemy should have been the Heavenly Devouring Evil Lord, and she should've been released by WY. not through Ming Long.

[collapse]

-The amount of untied ends is just... way too big.

Spoiler

One simple example :

-Who was Sun Wudao? The book clearly states that he is a follower of the Great Sage, Heaven's Equal legacy, and that he didn't die in chapter 15, but he never reappears, and who he was is never explained.

[collapse]

Overall, it was nonetleless an interesting read, but it can definitively be improved. And this ending, so rushed... <<less

All other good reviews (4* or more) have a way to 'review' only mentioning one thing they liked and then nothing else, as if they didn't even know what they read. That is not review, just your personal opinion, pretty sure the page is to leave a review, regardless of whether you want to show your opinion or not, a review is mandatory. After all, it say 'leave a review'.

Been through many novels in many ways worst than the other or in really unique ways to just f*ck up. This... more>> one reminds me of that damned and doomed novel 'Lord of All Realms' where Ni Cang Tian, having shown me that he has great skill for talent that he can be a huge suck-up and lapdog for the government and whatnot. MC is just not a MC, just one that is mentioned non-stop. And all things that drive him drives none. Introduction to his immortal path is shown at chap 7 or so. And so, and so, and so, and so again and yet once again non-stop all the way to more than a hundred chapters up. It's the same with anything else that is also being introduced in.

-Like techniques and treasures. Used once and then completely common or never ever used again, only once for each stage and advancement.

-Like comprehensions, they're null, non-important. Literally he grows strong, and his physical body is stronger than Jin Dan cultivators at barely the 2nd stage of qi condensation, what's the result? Someone of the 4th lvl easily beats him up and is forced to use everything, everything. But he only uses qi.

^^^ - That reminds so once he enter qi condensation, meaning, even if he gets the best of the f*cking universe and even advances in said techniques he still has just the same old ret*rded battle power, Let's say he got 10 million warhorses strength and lvl 1 qi condensation, well a 3k warhorses strength and lvl 3 qi condensation will always beat him up unless he sacrifices his body to great harm, and even with that 9.997.000 million strength difference he can still harm him with just qi.

-So, all enemies are 100% prob rate of nat 20's.

-So, MC is always 100% prob rate nat 1's.

Power leveling system and battles are a f*cking joke and laughingstock overall. And there is a fight, a completely forcefully tense, complex, life-and-death, impossible odds fight every 5 chapters. f*cking disgusting, braindead.

And I know it changes later on, but, you already disappointed me and got me balls all shriveled, the fact that elevates later on is just a pat in the back, and MC's dumbest personality for being kind-hearted... there goes the being a military genius since childhood, holy f*ck.

-There's a battle where he loses in a breath, then that's it, the author tells you he lose, he lost, DONE. ???????????????????????????????????? I got my mouth hung open for a full 2 minutes, dumbtarded.

Ch355

It's really boring. It reminds me of when I discovered the true nature behind MGA. Fights are literally nat 20's from all sides. There is anything else.

I LIIIIIIIIIKE body-tempering. But in here it isn't body tempering, it's battle power tempering, it doesn't make any sense.

And the fact that MC literally has killed like 5 or 7 people (yes in 355 chapters) with all sh*t that he's being forced through... wow, wtf. And this is even after his 'character-progression'- basically, the same as overgeared; aka Overrated. That his Dao, that his path to immortality yada yada yada, over and over the same ret*rded already known and read through same old bullshit. Aw, of awful.

Spoiler

He meets a chick who doesn't know what she feelin', and he knows it well and so he is responsible. Literally next time she appears they're best lovers forever (???) and they just spent their time cultivating next to each other, a few kisses from his father doing something to her body (nice twisted mention, FQY, not a f*cking cuckoldry weirdo at all, as well as with her suddenly out-of-nowhere childhood friend that's accompanied her through everything and even after knowing MC, nice FQY, f*cking cuck), but then she is "do this, it's against your beliefs (MC for some reason doesn't realize until he's told in a small paragraph what's up, niiiiiiiiiiiice) and if you not, we're not lovers anymoe". -MC doesn't do it and pum, underwhelming boring development of getting kicked out and sob-story randomly written, have fun.

[collapse]

The only reason I kept reading was of how well translation was made, and how it didn't 4th walled around like korean novels I read just before.
No, no fun at all. <<less

Guys, I wont say much. I'll admit it was a bit boring at the beginning, even upto Chp 1000. But as I read on, the story became more and more interesting. It's super interesting after Chp 1220 and even until now. So please read atleast 90% of the novel before rating it.

Spoiler

MC against MC is a lit storyline that I haven't seen anywhere else. And the romance also picks up after Chp 1270

Plot twists, are kinda disgusting. I don't have fetish for the kinds of thingies in here. So don't mind the word I said.

Few early chapters of him joining sect and cultivating in it was good. But really, staff in a sword cultivating sect, they even got A staff in there.

Not my liking part is, disgusting family issue
