It's so satisfying for once to have a cunning MC who know what's up, isn't a puppet being controlled or manipulated, not playing by the rules of others, and mostly out-manuevering the opponents.

I like it better than Summoned Slaughterer, maybe because MC isn't a psycho and his actions are all justified.

I enjoy it.

MC too OP, I want to see him suffer and lose and mature a bit more.

Side chars are kind of lack luster, progression is smooth.

Only thing that is slightly annoying is the infrequency of updates.

I'm sure the person (s) working on this series is using up spare time for this as is usual, but unjust want some consistency is all, th though for hard work!

It's somewhat nice that the MC is all so very smart and decisive but like some others have said, he's just too smart and decisive, unrealistically so. I could believe it if he was broken from the start but he was just a really well trained kid that practiced some ancient martial art, with no other real experience other than pseudo deadly combat practice.

But even with that, it would still be a good read if he was at least an interesting character but there's really not much else to him... more>> other than being a superhuman killing machine that helps anyone he could, and it certainly doesn't help that there's also the clichéd 'there's a darkness deep inside that's just waiting to come out'. And then there's the s*aves, they're just so incredibly shallow with a short sob story and pretty much nothing else.

Overall it's not that bad, it's just very flawed. I really like the antagonist characters, they have done a number of morally questionable things but they are not outright evil. If the MC wasn't so flawless then maybe we could have more interesting interactions or conflicts between them and the MC.

What's ironic is that there are a few lines that pretty much say that "this MC is so assertive unlike all those other wimpy LN MCs" and while he is, at least a lot of those wimpy LN MCs are better written than the MC here. <<less

For me, this story started off pretty good.. Then it took a turn for the annoying. It got far too political for me.

Spoiler

Especially when he joined the neighboring kingdom's royal crew. My real question is, no matter how smart he is, why did they accept him? He's a man with a questionable background.

Such a good effort... Wasted by poor choices, techniques, and writting...

This novel is two potentially good stories mixed into a mediocre one.

But the big annoyence I have with this story is that the author has a few "arrows" in his quiver he seems to really like he over uses to try and make the story "smart". And each one is just an exemple of poor or awkward writing.

First are the inane discussions between the MC and new "in power" characters he meets. The discussions make no sense, are silly, characters... more>> jump to conclusions they should not be able to make given what they know. All of that in order to make the new character sound mysterious, and the MC smart by having them "test each other out" and the test is passed if both characters seem to know exactly what the other is thinking... Which always happens. Those discussions are a waste of time, illogical and just annoying. It's like the characters are talking without saying anything.

This is almost always followed by the second "arrow" in the author's quiver. Which is to rewrite those new characters by making them dumber than they appeared in the first meeting. Because they'll most likely become ennemies soon. This is also over used.

Next is the completely hallucinating choice of the author, to ignore important moment of the story and just do skips to the boring stuff. You'll often finish a chapter with a cliffhanger, or in the middle of the fight, or a battle, and just go to the next chapter and wonder if you didn't miss stuff. Because the author did not write the end and decided to move forward. It's irritating. The novel turns into a kingdom building genre after a few volumes, but even city dvpt is completely skipped.

There is also the complete lack of character dvpt, even the sisters, the first two characters that joined him are completely ignored. The author actually has good characters. They seem interesting and distinct. But the author spends no times on them except to use them as walking props for the MC. To validate his view, receive his order, or to try and build some drama by pretending the MC has doubt's on the success of a particular endeavor which will anyways succeed... While the author spends ENTIRE chapters on random people that we care nothing about, never heard off before, that will die soon anyways...

And all of this is wrapper in nonsensical choices made by the author and characters. Sometimes infuriatingly s*upid, ridiculous, and just dumb.

This is really a let down because there is a lot of potential here. The basics are there, the characters are there, the dirty plots ar there as well. Not much is needed on top of that for a great story... Sadly the author couldn't manage to pull it off.

I'm giving it three, because it's still readable and the foundation for a great novel is there. But frandkly, I think a 2 or 2.5 is more appropriate. <<less

So. At v6c39. Someone just gave a spoiler and I am so thankful for it. I just had enough of this sht. Each chapters are just a waste of fckn time. Each actions has meaning. Sitting means something. Wooden chair means something. Sipping tea means something. Everything means something. And it keeps on explaining what those actions means like I give a single f*ck about it. No. I dont give a f*ck. Just get the f*ck on with it you tr*sh. So yeah. Waited for months and nothings new. Reading... more>> this sht just puts unnecessary infos or words I dont need in my head. So im dropping this sht. Wortenia Senki: a collection of genuinely interesting ideas, dragged down heavily by the writing style. Yeah, as mentioned by other reviewers, there are some plot contrivances here and there, and the MC definitely has some strong Mary Sue traits, but the utterly frustrating writing style is the main thing I can't look past.

Now, if you've read a lot of translated web/light novels, you've probably noticed a lot of them have this quirk where the author tends to over-explain things, repeat themselves, go off on unrelated tangents, etc., and just all-around... more>> have a problem getting to the gosh darn point. Well, Wortenia Senki dials that up to 11, containing enough useless fluff that you could easily tell the exact same story while cutting out 80-90% of it (and I'm not even exaggerating there, especially in the more recent chapters).

Even worse, after spending an entire chapter laboring over useless details and irrelevant trivia, and/or musing at length about basic concepts and facts of the human condition as if they were earth-shattering truths, the author will appear to finally be moving back to the main plot, only for the chapter to suddenly end at a cliffhanger (usually with some variation of a character opening their mouth to speak or a door being opened/knocked on). After all that, the next chapter will start off with a time skip/POV change/whatever, and MAYBE you'll get to find out what happened immediately after the cliff in another 10 chapters, if you're lucky.

And this happens over. And over. And. OVER. AGAIN.

Seriously, the English title for this novel should be "Record of Wortenia Filibuster, " because that's exactly what the author is doing to the plot.

Either the author is cynically padding the word count, or he's just as narcissistic as the nobles/royals he writes about and actually thinks we want to read his thoughts and opinions more than the actual plot.

If you're planning to read this novel, learn how to skim, it'll help a lot. Good rule of thumb: whenever you start to feel bogged down by author rambling, start looking for quotation marks or parentheses and skip to there. <<less

I enjoyed the majority of the first 3 Volumes despite some gripes here and there. One can see that it's a quite interesting novel with a grand ambition. However the more the story goes, the worse it just gets.

There has been quite a few inconsistencies here and there, but it's not that glaringly apparent at first. As time goes though, it feels like the author doesn't know what to write anymore. Deus ex Machina, sudden character change, pointless backstory plagued the plot which quite frankly have a really great potential.

One... more>> of my worst gripe with this is how the Author can go off tangent so freaking hard, that an entire chapter can be summarized with 2 sentences. The exposition are overly done and lots of the time it feels like the author was just inserting some random trivia that he read last week just to pad up the story. Exposition if done correctly is crucial to the world building, however the exposition that has plagued the majority of the chapters here doesn't really add anything to the world, plot, nor current situation.

Another thing is how the author handles a Cliffhangers. Cliffhangers done properly is of course a great tool to keep the suspense. Sometimes you can also do a cliffhanger, and do a timeskip without showing the conclusion of the cliffhanger, and instead allowing the reader to read inbetween the lines and deduce what happened themself. This is also done sometimes in other novels like Overlord that has managed to do this kind of cliffhanger masterfully. The first few times this novel has done it, I wasn't that bothered cause I still can deduce what happened. However, starting from volume 3, it has done it waay too many times. It feels like every 2 chapter has a cliffhanger, but the conclusion will be skipped completely. It makes me think that the Author doesn't have the confidence to deliver the impact of concluding a cliffhanger, and thus chosen to omit the conclusion that we wanted completely. It can work, but doing it 5 times in a row is just gonna result in me thinking that the Author is out of ideas

In summary, a novel with great potential, but it's quite clear that the Author is either overworked, having a mental block or actually sick because of the release of the Manga and Light Novel. I do sincerely hope and think that the Light Novel would be much better, just because it will have an editor that will edit out all the crap the author typed to pad up this Novel <<less

Yes, it’s a good read, enjoyable, but once you get to the battle of Salzberg. Once it’s done, if there are not at least 100-150 chapters waiting for you, stop there.

Why? It’s a perfect pausing point until the series has enough chapters built up that you actually start reading again. For some 25-40~ chapters as of volume 6 c24 the best you get is “oh there was a banquet” and narration about it happening, NOT THE STORY OF, just the fact it did and how some things where done.

I mean... more>> a whole chapter on the dish’s... and how they kept the food hot/cold.

At this rate, I’m not even sure 100+ chapters will skip to actual storytelling again... <<less

Started promising. The MC is summoned into another world, but instead of instantly aligning himself with the summoned country, he rejects them immediately. In his escape from the country, the MC is shown to be calm and intelligent. He makes smart choices to collect information about the new world. Fully knowing he has the advantage of no one knowing what he looks like, due to him killing any witnesses, he quickly takes steps to blend in as your average citizen. Then we hit the end of volume 1 and he... more>> throws all that out the window. He reveals his face and full name intentionally to his pursuers for a "trap". What trap was this? No idea because nothing of benefit came out of it. It seemed as if the author wrote himself into a corner and decided to open up an easier writing path by forcing the MC become less than perfect (dumb).

Reading volume 2 was a struggle with how poorly it was written. The time skips, sudden change in how the MC behaves, the amount of scene changing, and introduction of many new characters with a relationship built in the time skips, a sudden plot about a power struggle between nobles/royalty in which somehow the MC figured out. The amount of vagueness makes the story difficult to follow and hard to emphasize with any of the characters struggles because we had no idea about anything that happened during the time skips other than one or two sentences leading up to the drama.

I have to say that I really hate the generic hotheaded character who takes offense for any kind of disrespect for the king/queen. They will instantly demand for extreme punishments against anyone for the tiniest of fault. Yet, every time, this character always refuses to listen to the king/queen’s judgement their selves and go off on a s*upid annoying rant, even after being told by the king/queen to shut up. It seems this character type plagues all the worlds’ royalties. In fact, all of the villainous characters are hot headed and conceited fools. What a terribly annoying character type to read and fill your story with. <<less

The WN starts off as decent. Sure, the MC lacks any distinct personality and is basically a Gary Stu but at least he is not as annoying as other spineless generic isekai shounen MC. And despite his blandness he is a good enough character for someone looking for a light read.

I'm going to get straight to the point, the author rambles too much in his story. It was bearable from the start as it only happens few and far between. However, as the story progress, these ramblings will take... more>> on an entire chapter and happen throughout the whole volume. Most of it adds nothing to the story, some focused on characters that will not be mentioned again, some focused on characters that will be dead soon. And if the author wasn't rambling on about a faceless character's backstory, he is rambling on about recaps of what just said or philosophies and morals that you would have learned in elementary school or middle school at best.

These chapters mostly comprise of 90% of ramblings and 10% of moving the plot forward a little, so guess what? You can't skip it. The worst thing is that this WN is also filled with cliffhangers that stop right before something interesting is happening after a snore fest.

Here's an example of what I mean:

Spoiler

In volume 5, one of the chapters starts with a minor character wanting to say something to the queen. In this chapter, we get mostly of that minor character's and the queen's inner thoughts and ramblings. Most of these ramblings comprise of recaps and facts that people with common sense would know already.

After all that, just before the character opens his mouth, a messenger with an urgent message arrives and before the messenger can speak, the chapter ends.

At the start of the next chapter, the meeting with the queen ended suddenly and what the minor character wanted to say becomes irrelevant. After a few more paragraphs of ramblings, we finally learned that the queen passed out because the messenger told her that a rebellion is happening and the plans the minor character made is useless now. What are the plans you say? Don't know. The author didn't bother to ramble about it.

10/10 story pacing. Totally worth my time. Will totally buy Japanese LN and support Author. I'm being sarcastic, obviously.

[collapse]

And despite of all these ramblings, most supporting characters are shallow and bland since the author did not bother to add more backstory and character depth to them. Quite ironic, don't you think? The two main heroines are also reduced to less than minor characters in the later volumes. It is to the point where you almost forget their names since they barely appear and haven't been of any significant support for the MC since volume 2.

And on top of that, many characters also have inconsistent characteristics. They seem to change according to the author's whim. Example of author's worse offence:

Spoiler

One of the characters is a generic scumbag noble that are kinda fat and loves to f*ck his maids all the time, and suddenly that character became a powerful fighter that can give our powerful MC a hard time just so our MC can use some bankai power-up bullsh*t with his new edgy chuunibyou demon katana.

[collapse]

Lastly, the most annoying part of Wortenia Senki is its reluctance to give priority to occurring plot events. It contains much rambling from the author and also many "foreshadowing" that are so in your face it's basically a teaser that tries to keep you interested. Some of them are mentioned just so that the author doesn't have to write a chapter or two about it and just straight up skip that part. Many characters that mattered are thrown away and mainly appear for a short while. All of their action are done in the background while the author focuses solely on faceless or soon-to-be-dead characters. And even when that is not the case the author will spend paragraphs upon paragraphs recapping or explaining things that are not needed in between what is currently happening in the story. Reading this reminds me of essays written by people desperate to increase their word count, which made me felt that the author has no real passion for his story, it's all just meeting a quota for him. By the end of the day you end up with a bunch of meaningless side stories giving you too many information that has little to do to the overall story arc while the things that lead to the main events are given as little detail as possible.

Tl;dr, don't read past volume 3 or 4 of Wortenia Senki even if you enjoy the earlier volumes. It's a fun read at the start for an isekai power fantasy novel but not good enough to read it seriously as a kingdom building novel since it's filled with irrelevant descriptions, inconsistent characters and leaving out important parts of story despite excessive ramblings from the author. <<less

I really love this WN. Because I love how he overwhelm his enemy with stategic from earth. I like how the MC thinking like he make soldier with with Quality over Quantity, he use wind magic to sail the boat, he use war to make profit for his own country, something like that and of course his revenge plot againts Princess.

I like this story.

BUT I can't give it a 5 star. 4 sure. 5 no.

Why?

... more>> Because in the opening chapters it's established that the MC has martial arts sword training by his Grandpa (wizened old asian powerful dude type).

Once summoned we discover ALL sorts of cool and dastardly things our MC can do. Supposedly due to his Grandpa's training.

But... that's what annoyed me the most. It's not made clear in the opening chapters if his Grandpa was a hardcore super powerful dude that was on par with Batman and he bestowed ALL his might and knowledge upon Robi-..I mean our MC.

Because our MC does come off as being nearly as all knowing and well trained as Batman at times. Devious, cunning, smart, terrifyingly cold, and very driven. All good qualities in a hero or villain.

YET.... my annoyance at the not enough details of his training history leaves me in doubt.

Other than that issue, the story and translations are WELL done. Superbly so. If the backstory of our MC gets developed enough that I can see him suffering as much training as Batman did to get to his level. Then yea, I'll come crawling back and redo this review as a 5 star.

But do read this novel. If you can ignore that weak backstory, then you'll enjoy it as much as me. <<less

At first, I thought the storytelling was pretty messy since I think that the author tried to avoid obvious spoilers by going from one perspective to the next without much context. But the more you read, the more it all makes sense. It feels like it's going to be a good novel, but I'll reserve judgement when there's more chapters and the plot is better revealed to the reader.

Also, there's a manga adaptation of this novel. It kinda helps if you have a hard time visualizing some parts of the... more>> story.

Side Note: It does feel like Summoned Slaughterer, but this is a different author so there's only a small (but not zero) chance that both stories are linked. I'd like that idea, though. <<less

Have you ever read a novel where the Author seems to think he is smarter than what he actually is?

This is the epitome of that.

Let me clear something, the first volume, fantastic, wonderful, interesting with a good twist with good characterizations and representation of different concepts and ideas in your regular Isekai setting.

The first volume is filled with a whole lot of things that help convey how the MC, even if not a "genius" is at least smart enough to outmaneuver his enemies, he's painted as a person that thinks... more>> things trough before doing something rash, and that does rash things when he's out of time to think things trough.

It's Alexander cutting the Gordian knot, so at the very least read it, because it's interesting.

But then... it all devolves into "MC is smart... because everyone else is dumb"

No matter how many times the author says "This guy is a competent person" if the next sentence is "but..."

We are "told" plenty of things, only to be proof that the MC is a genius.

And this becomes bothersome.

It's interesting enough, but I'm only at volume 2 and it already devolved into forced characterizations to make the MC outstanding.

And reading other peoples reviews, I'm dreading that this will not change.

It is, at least so far, entertaining enough, the set pieces although a bit forced are competent, and when he's in the battlefield it's interesting.

OH! the Japanophile in this author is strong by the way, the only person that is portrayed to be able to match the MCs wits is another Japanese, and again there is the common trope of "katana best sword" and stuff like that.

I mean this IS a Japanese novel so whatever, but just be aware that it's intertwined with the whole premise so if you find those things obnoxious, they permeate the whole novel. (I personally don't mind but is worth noting)

I'll keep reading but I feel that I may end up dropping this if the chapters begin to devolve into endless "goes into a room, chats, goes out of the room" as other people are saying begins to happen. <<less

I'm sad that there isn't more to read at the moment. I binge read the chapters until v6c22 and started to wait for more to binge but only have 5 more chapters to read so far after more than 6 months of waiting. Oh well...

I like fantasy genre where strategy plays important part and this is one of the best in my opinion. The MC is also not only planning strategy and staying in one place and gradually gains more subordinates etc.
The different places/scenery are also easy to imagine... more>> because of good storytelling.

I also would like to note that many side character/villains actually have quite a lot of depth. Even though some of them still stay generic shallow side characters they are still better than many many other novels in this aspect. <<less

Really liked it at first, I liked the protagonist, hard pragmatist, that changed from the ever so present ballsless humble and meek typical hero. But you quickly understand that character developpement is not in the cards, five volumes in and still nothing, no dialogues between characters (beside the plot), no change in relations, etc.

The author mainly focus on background developpement and description, to the point of shooting itself in the foot. Every events, thoughts, actions are developped and explained ad noseum, again and again, to the points that two or... more>> three chapters are necessary sometime to have the follow up of a scene that should take place a second after.

But the thing that did it for me was the constant non-sensical chain of events in the story. You are constantly brought in one way or the other by new plans, new events, new characters, new ennemis, new plots... do not get me wrong, it sound good said like that, but it is poorly done. The author never really end anything or use the things he start, it is like a kid with no patience. Each time you think the plot will go one way with what he started, you take a slap in the face and forced to go another and forget all the rest. Like I said, could be nice if done well, but that is not the case.

So in the end, that could and sould have been great, but everything is too poorly done to be good. <<less

I actually really liked it for the first little while, it would even be considered one of my favorite isekai at the start. Sure it had some parts that hinted it was going south, but sometimes a story recovers, this one did not.

Im definitely dropping this for good.

My main reasons for absolutely hating this disappointment:

1. The MC's personality, motives, and basically everything else about him changes drastically, he turns into the typical hateable limp dicked Japanese beta protagonist. His behaviors are contradictory, nonsensical and in a few words simply... more>> beyond idiotic.

2. The s*upidity of national leaders and government officials is so terrible (come on, they atleast realistically should have a decent IQ) I guarantee you my 11 yr old would be able to write a better story and develop better characters. (And run a kingdom better!) It ended up making me hate the "good guys" to the point where if I didn't drop this I'd be rooting for the "bad guys" in the story.

3. They took what could have been a top class isekai and totally ruined it. I hate getting my hopes up like that. <<less

I enjoyed this story till v4 despite having full sh*t of plot holes, forced situations, MC being smartest dude who despite being a student understood politics. I don't say that MC can't do politics or he shouldn't be genius, what I want to say is that MC should be a genius but not too over the board. He should learn politics step by step. Mistakes should be made as no human being is perfect. Anyway these were the common or very miniscule problems for the story to be ignored.

I don't... more>> know about others but what I'm about to say is for myself. After v3 starting from v4 author became a b*tch. Mr. Author started leaving everything hanging in the middle to creat a suspense or to look scholarly. He made his style to (1) never complete a sentence, (2) give answer of a question in a question style and

(3) question in a simple answering style as a character is answering someone's question.

This kind of sh*t irritates me if used too much to ignore. Man everybody understands the meaning whether you write your story in a simple style or make it complicated to make yourself look like a "scholar". <<less

I can't really vouch for the plot. It looked promising, the MC is decisive enough to be refreshing after all the idiots I got to read about. Then it got too much of everything real fast, and it kind of feels like reading Bleach, where Ichigo is everything. The manga is better:

    • Nice art
    • More linear
    • Better english translation.
Really, the translation is kind of a joke and I suggest getting an editor, because while almost funny on its own, reading something like
