I've never been so insulted by a novel before.

This novel seems to be targeted towards young girls (as it kind of have that 'shoujo' vibe), but I would never recommend this to any young girl. I don't understand how this can be written by a woman. Everything about this novel practically embodies male chauvinism. What's even more disturbing is that the one perpetuating female inferiority is the MC herself.

Sure, the MC tries to impress readers (and may even give off a "woman's empowerment" vibe) by boasting about her accomplishments... more>> as a child of a single mother who built up her career as a flight attendant. However. This is just a pretense. In the end, it all comes down to the damsel-in-distress MC getting rescued by her super powerful CEO husband. Literally every time the MC is in trouble, the MC is the one to get her out.

In regards to their relationship, they are not even equivalents as the ML is pretty domineering. I hate that the MC can never talk to him on equal footing. The disparity between their occupation (boss-to-employee) exacerbates the inequality. According to CrazyApple who finished the novel, it never improves and actually gets worse.

Another sexists theme that this novel perpetuates is China's obsession with a woman's v**ginity. I get the impression that the author is a sexist since the MC herself is the biggest perpetuator of this sexist ideology as she sl*t-shames her former best friend for getting a hymen repairment surgery (Yeah, that's a thing in China). Sure, the MC's best friend is very unlikable character, but this crosses my bottom line when I see discrimination. Nobody (both good and bad characters) should be shamed for their sexuality.

I hate seeing novels that labels non-virg*n women as the villainous characters and the virg*ns as the heroine. It's so sexist. It sends the message to female readers that non-virg*ns are 'tainted' and 'bad people.'

Spoiler

Literally the title of chapter 11 is "She Is Not a virg*n!"

In chapter 11, both the MC and her ex-bestie are looking down at each other for not being virg*ns. I hate how the MC attempts to make herself seem pure by arguing she's had only one s*xual partner (the ML) while the ex-bestie already had gone through multiple partners. The MC seems rather proud of this fact.

Sadly, the sl*t shaming doesn't end there. The MC publicly shames her ex-bestie for undergoing hymen repairing surgery (yeah, that's a thing in Asia)

What's even more dumb is that it was revealed later that the ML was still a virg*n when he met the MC. Like seriously???

Sexism is not my only issue. I find this novel rather superficial as it seems goes through a cycle of stuffing a bunch of random themes (that are out of place in this novel) and tossing them out once the drama is worn out. There are better stories out there that incorporates these themes beautifully into the character's personalities and the plot (I have a list of recommendations in the last spoiler box.)

I tried to give this novel a chance, but I finally had enough this novel when I saw how the latest clich drama played out in chapter 42.

List of clich themes in this novel:

Spoiler
  1. MC gets cheated by ex-boyfriend and finds a better one - (It's very straightforward. He cheated. She found a new boyfriend. End of story. There's no complex relationship dynamic between them, nor does it explore any possible relationship problems that could've lead to this outcome)
    • My recommendation: Gaze at the Scenes of Debauchery (a yaoi novel) This novel does involve cheating, but there is no "finding a better one." This novel delves a bit into depression and how adultery affects mental health.
  2. MC's ex-boyfriends falls back in love with the MC - (There's hardly any point to this theme since this novel doesn't explore the relationship dynamic between the MC and her ex. If the ex feels remorse, then why doesn't he explain his reason for cheating on her in the first place?)
    • If you like this kind of theme, I'd recommend Reborn as my Love Rival's Wife. Sure it's a BL novel, but it's hilarious. The MC's take on this issue is rather.... amusing. He definitely knows how to communicate his response to the ex-boyfriend. The whole drama does end on a serious note in spite of the hilarity
    • Skip Beat (a shoujo manga) - a crush, not ex-boyfriend but I love how she turns her heartbreak into a strength and how she was able to move on to the point that her crush has simply become a faded memory
    • Junjou Romantica (a yaoi manga) - Miyagi's ex-wife is very down-to-earth regarding how her feelings for Miyagi rekindled after their divorce
    • After Our Divorce, I Still Wore Your Jacket (a BL novel) - the characters are all pretty mature in how they handle their relationships.
  3. The MC's ex-bestie causes her own miscarriage to make the MC look bad in front of her boyfriend - (In my opinion, it's kind of dumb to see this kind of theme in a Modern setting. To add to that, the ex-bestie planned it out so poorly that the whole thing turned into a face-slapping joke. The scheme was debunked with the release of the audio recording the ex-bestie)
    1. I'd recommend watching Wu Zetian's documentary or fictional works based on Wu Zetian's life. Her story regarding this theme is more fascinating and the usage of this theme gives you insight into the brutal nature of the harem hierarchy system in ancient China. Wu Zetian's reasoning for her miscarriage is very calculated move that is politically motivated and has little to do with her own personal feelings. It is absolutely nothing like this novel in which the MC simply has a vendetta with the MC.
  4. The MC is rejected by her biological father because she is proof of his adultery - (I dropped the novel because of this. I found it insulting that this novel would use this theme as a superficial means to make the MC look 'tragic.'
It's an insult to the other great novels that puts complex characterization to characters of this background. superficial means to make the heroine look 'tragic.' If you compare with the recommendations below, notice that the characters are the serious and calculating types)
    1. Bringing the Nation's Husband Home -
The sheer complexities in the relationship dynamic between Lu Jinnian, his biological father, and his father's family is astounding that takes a whopping 900+ chapters to resolve.
    2. The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (a yaoi novel) - There's a huge mystery behind the topic of illegitimate children and is simply part of a bigger mystery with a gruesome reveal.
    3. The Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Reuenthal's adultery is something that haunts him his entire life and is something he struggles with in spite of his successful military career and close friendships. There's an unexpectedly beautiful ending to Reuenthal's internal struggles.

Themes that I have no recommendation for (no good ones at least) :

  1. Marrying on a whim - yeah, it was literally on a whim on the MC's part. This half-hearted attitude towards marriage really ticks me off. She really did not take it seriously. What kind of marriage can last with this kind of mindset? There was no huge financial or political entanglement involved. The ML simply got their parents to beg the MC to marry him and the MC caved in because she couldn't say no.
  2. The ML coming to the MC's rescue - I'm sorry, but this kind of one-sided relationship is a huge turn off. Relationships are supposed to be fully mutual with both parties sharing the burden and looking out for each other. I have no recommendations because I don't like damsel-in-distress MCs. This MC is incapable of solving her own problems and the ML always magically knows when she's in trouble.
  3. The ML dominating the MC - I don't like this theme for the same reasons I don't like the damsel-in-distress MC. It is a very unequal relationship. I hate that the MC is incapable of holding her own ground against the ML.
  4. The MC always knows when to make a audio recording at the right moment - The MC is dumb in every way, yet when someone is scheming against her, she somehow becomes smart enough to know when audio recordings are needed??? The MC is very tactless when retorting to her enemies and it definitely shows in the recordings

Story is cliche, which I don't typically mind, but is also poorly written. Events move too quickly with little to no exposition and the characters are one dimensional. Only worth it of you've run out of other stuff to read.

Mr. You Please Spoil Me is a cliche movie with all of the plots to make it longer. ML is tr*sh with a tr*sh ex Gf who everybody is suspicious of but overlooks that because of plot. MC is the typical bimbo. I would like to say she starts out with some brains but slowly loses it throughout the story. At around 5 chapters from the end you realize that the author is really trying to wrap the story up. The author ends up putting about 200 chapters worth of... more>> context into 1 chapter.

Now why is the ML tr*sh?

Spoiler

He hits the MC on more than one occasion and at one point had her sprain or break something. The he r*pes her and she develops PTSD and literally could not be around the ML which was patched up with " I love him and should try to understand him more"

Ending spoilers

Spoiler

MC ends up losing her memory after a plane crash with MC's half brother. (Another plot that was left unanswered) MC ends up being taken in by a powerful family in another city and lives there for 2 years. ML also loses his memory because of the pain of losing MC and his grandmother couldn't bear for him to remember so she made it though MC never existed and had all of her family, his friends, and her friends pretend that she didnt exist. MC goes to a party with her adoptive family who gave her a new identity and tried their best to have her not remember her previous life, there she meets a guy who I will assume was suppose to be the 3rd love interest. That love interest had met her prior to losing her memory and thus tried to help her regain her memory. So he takes her to her old city. At the same time ML slowly starts regaining his memory and asking questions and in the process he ends up at a cafe where lo and behold he meets the MC. Now after this meeting I forget if this all happened in the last chapter or the chapter before but the author reapply wrapped this story up ex gf moves MC and ML have twins and live happily ever after was literally how it ended.

The story is decent, it's just the common cliche setting of a girl whose boyfriend secretly hooked up with her white lotus best friend, then she goes clubbing to drink off her sorrows and impulsively decides to sleep with the no.1 host of the club but instead sleeps with the OP ML mistaking him as a host.

For a change the MC doesn't work in entertainment industry or regular office but is a flight attendant. The jealous best friend plots to steal everything MC has viz. Her boyfriend and her promotion.

The... more>> MC is a clear headed, talented and capable person. She loved her boyfriend but is not too hung up on him after his betrayal. The ML is a classic wolf in sheep's clothing, black bellied CEO.

What I don't like about these novels is their hypocrisy. I mean the MC has to be a virg*n when she is bedded by the ML even if he's a complete stranger to her then. I mean isn't it hypocrisy if the MC acts all reserved and pure with her ex boyfriend in their years of being together and suddenly goes to sleep with a total random stranger when her boyfriend betrays her.

At this point of time the ML's white moonlight has not yet surfaced so I don't know how the story will unfold then.

The story deserves 3 stars but I'll give an extra star for the good translation. <<less
