You can actually skip this danmei, it's not worth it. I'm ok with SM but here it leaves a sour taste. The plot is very weak and chapter after chapter it's only boring abuse with s*upid MC who can't even say anything except "you, you". I persevered because I thought finally we will get deeper psychological understanding of ML but nope. Half of second volume and still nothing, person with such pathological personality and there is no mention why Emperor is like that. I lost interest when author decided to... more>> make readers believe that MC

can abuse verbally and physically Emperor in public. Even a bandit wouldn't be able to behave like this.

What an utter nonsense!

This novel doesn't contain any interesting histories or cultural informations, it's basically a low quality smut. <<less

I'm not surprised by the low rating for this novel, even if I don't think it's warranted. I think, in the grand scheme of imperial setting, male-concubine stories, this one is actually pretty realistic. Lu Cang/MC is relatable in the sense that he knows Jing/ML has only brought chaos and stress into his life, but that doesn't stop him from wanting to be with Jing. Also, it's not like Lu Cang doesn't attempt separation, it's just that every time he tries to leave, Jing brings him back... and Jing is... more>> a tyrannical emperor so there's not really much choice Lu Cang has...

The only thing I don't like is the author trying to inject 'love' into the story. I don't know if I would necessarily call what they have love -- it's more of a contented companionship with a heavily imbalanced power-dynamic in favor of Jing, but that's just my take on it.

I think a lot of the low ratings are due to this not ending in the typical 'happy-go-lucky' and whimsical manner a lot of other BLs set in this period do -- you're not going to find the ML getting rid of his harem or claiming the MC as his 'official consort' and giving him the biggest/closest inner palace or changing the law to have a male empress... but again, I think it adds to the realism of the story.

HHYL is also one of the few -- if not only -- stories in this trope, that touch on the topic of aging, legacy and procreation/children for the MC/bottom. The reality is that a lot of BL often revolves around young males, especially those set in imperial eras, where male consorts are often teenagers to very early 20's (like 21/ 22 max), and I liked how the story touched on Lu Cang's fear of what might happen to him when he turns 30 and that male lovers past 30 are rarely seen -- which is true even from a fictional perspective where most BL novels, manhua, manga, webtoons, etc., typically fall short of having anyone be older than 35... I also like how the novel touched on the fact that these 'Emperor/Concubine' relationships entirely remove the possibility of biological children for the bottom... there is a whole chapter that touches on this which was really good (and sad) -- I do wish they had gone a little deeper, but just seeing it being acknowledged for once was great.

There are some continuity issues in the novel, for example, Jing is stated as already having 5 kids (and 3 crown princes) in the early chapters/part one, but then at the end, they are celebrating the birth of his third son... also Lu Cang's starting age is not clear (it never really is in these things because of reasons...) but just based on my math, he likely starts his relationship with Jing closer to 18/19 than 20/21 which they try to imply at the end... these are minor things though.

To wrap up, I think it's worth a read if you can handle TRUE toxic relationships. This is not BJ Alex, this is true s*xual violence, manipulation and control... many instances of s*xual assault and s*xual humiliation occur. The ML is a horrible person and that's acknowledged by the MC too. The ML changes in some ways but it's not a full blown redemption, so if you require full-blown redemption arcs I would not recommend because you will not get that at all with HHYL. <<less

The way jing treated lu cang is absolutely unforgivable. And I find it vile that lu cang actually forgave jing just like that. The only reason I persisted reading this is because I was hoping in my heart lu cang will seek vengeance even though I know that's not going to happen. I honestly would have rather killed myself in front of jing just to show how disgusted I am. And it's even beyond my comprehension how lu cang could have even felt a tiny bit of emotion towards jing aside from hate, much less actually love him.

[collapse]

Overall, the reason why I dont like this is because I refuse to chip what little bit of humanity left I have in me. For me, liking this novel means accepting r*pe and torture, which will never be even at least borderline "okay". Most people think it has a good plot, I dont really think so, the plot is mediocre at best for me. There isn't any twist or shocking revelation. IMO, the tragedy of the novel overpowers the actual content and plot. There are plenty of other novel that exceeds this and without the mental and pyschological trauma it brings to the readers. <<less

I think this novel is sick in one way and sad in another. It's hard to imagine one individual liking their rapist or even liking someone who had hurt them badly. The s*xual intimacy between the two were abnormal, force at most, hardcore, and have tons of blood. I don't know how Lu Cang lives through all that without medical intervention or medical issue down there.

Jing is someone who is selfish and spoil. I'm not sure how his parents raised him. Sounds like they spoil him. As an emperor he does what all emperor does, uses their power to indulge in pleasure even at other's expenses. Regardless of his out of earth beauty, I think he's a sl*t.
I can't understand Lu Cang. Jing has humiliates him, hurt him both emotionally and physically, cages him in the palace, isn't afraid to kill him at one point, and a cunning as*hole who doesn't keep his words. His beauty is the only good thing about him. Despite of Jing's thousand and thousand of flaws, Lu Cang found something loveable about this crazy man who is more of a psycho than anybody alive in this book. Plus, the fact that Jing's at one point became afraid of his feeling toward Lu Cang. Lu Cang pays a very high price for this and was emotionally hurt while physically beaten. Regardless of how this relationship looks, Jing is emotionally unavailable and tend to stay that way. Even after he found Lu Cang and confesses his feeling, he never once thought of Lu Cang and the sh*t (yes, the shit) Lu Cang has to go through because of Jing's fear. Jing didn't apologize or when he was beating Lu Cang up or when he was raping Lu Cang in the jail cell had he experience fear because Lu Cang could die.

I wasn't going to write a review but I find it so disturbing that so many people gave this novel high ratings. I had to put my two cents into this.

It was r*pe over r*pe and I skimmed through a lot just so I knew what happened in the end. ML went way overboard dark and mysterious love interest. He was just a disgusting sick person. Please do not encourage this kind of r*pe culture. How ML treated MC was wrong on so many levels. Please do not find this... more>> kind of behaviors romantic. Apart from physical violence, the emotional abuse he put on MC was so revolting.

(Add on in 2021: What I'm saying is it's not wrong because r*pe and abuse are in the story. It's wrong because the author is glorifying r*pe behaviours. They're portraying it as a romantic element between the two main characters. This is not targeted as a dark psychological thriller, it's clearly targeted as romance. Take Killing Stalking for example. It's a good psychological thriller. It's dark and disturbing. It has good storytelling and complex characters. That's how you write dark stories. Though part of the fandom can be toxic but that's another story. I read this novel a very long time ago when there were like a handful danmei novels available to english reading audiences. As far as I know, they are full of non-con trope like this. HHYL, War Prisoner. My friend introduced this to me and honestly this is my first ever Chinese BL novel and I was excited to read it. Needles to say, it didn't turn out well and it took me a long time to try them again. What's worse I was so upset when I discovered the reviews on novelupdate which lead me to writing my first ever review, more of a rant, on this site.) <<less

My review will be very much biased since this is my most favorite novel of all time. This story has all I want in it. Seemingly perfect but not so flawless Emperor. Seemingly reckless but actually naive bandit. The dynamic between these two is the most commendable for this story. And Of COURSE, the great plot with pretty males. XD

If there are ten stars for this, I definitely will rate this story as perfect story that deserved the 10 stars. XD

... hardcore xD

that's it in one word. uhm, basically, this novel is Not Safe For Work, Not Safe For Home, and almost Unsafe For Everywhere xD maybe a closet would be safe... or an underground bunker.

i've been reading so many lovely and cute and nice bl manga and fics that I almost forgot this kind of yaoi also existed. so if you are starting into yaoi, save this for later. MUCH later.

... more>> leaving an alternative summary, because I think the other is a bit misleading.

"Much to the despair of his sworn brothers, Lu Cang, the young and famous leader of a mountain bandit gang, is still single. They kidnap beautiful women for him, but he always rejects them for not being perfect enough, until they bring one particularly stunning beauty who steals Lu Cang's heart at a glance.

Unknown to Lu Cang, this meeting will teach him the meaning of pain and despair, and will test the limits of both his pride as a wulin practitioner and his pride as a man."

basically the story contains violence, blooood (i think only the later chapters don't contain blood x'D), torture, r*pe, foul language, and... it even made me cringe a few times. but it still will make you read until the end.

The story IS good, and contains a couple of 'wait, what?' plot twists. i'd rate it 5 if not because I think there are a couple of inconsistences with Jing's character, which is a serious flaw imho. this flaw should make rate this 3.

so 3+5= 4.

enjoy your hardcor- erm, I mean, your read! <<less

If you don't like psychological, r*pe and stockholm syndrome tags then this is not for you!

But honestly, why don't give this a shot?

The story is amazing. The main characters' love story is not instantly developed and there's a deep explanation to ML's behavior. The MC is not also weak willed, damsel in distress and he's not easily giving in to ML's desire.

The smut scenes are hot and sexy and you'll want more! 10/10 for me! The story is well plotted and you'll be easily hooked, promised! I really enjoyed and... more>> love this novel. <<less

Sadistic lover. A devil with the face of an angel.
A twisted romance of brutal and dysfunctional relationship. Be ready for multiple stab wounds on your poor heart.

This book left a bitter aftertaste. Yet I am appreciative of the author's skill at manipulating the fragile human heart. I am also grateful for the author's effort to keep the story real. So real, it left an indelible mark on my mind. To me this meant the author is successful in his/her work since their main aim should be to grasp the... more>> reader's mind and mold it to their own desired shape. A book that is able to control the psyche of its reader is a winner. That's how I see it. And this book had subjected me to various onslaught of intense emotions of amus**ent, joy, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, frustration, anticipation, surprise, expectation and last but not least love. Yes, love even-though this is a very brutal romance story which I had nearly lost hope of finding a flicker of romance within its pages. Some might reject the ideal of romance in this story due to Jing's (seme/antagonist) violent and selfish way of pursuing love and also Lu Cang's (uke/protagonist) seemingly masochist acceptance of abuse from his lover. To be fair, I too could not exactly shake off the possibility of Stockholm Syndrome in play as I did find it hard to see how Lu Cang as broken as a battered rag doll could ever find in his heart to forgive Jing's incessant cruelty upon this mind and body. Nevertheless how ever twisted their love is, love is still the catalyst of their tragedious joining. Sigh such highly dysfunctional relationship this pair has. I am still worried for Lu Cang's future even upon finishing the book. Afterall, to serve the king is like accompanying a tiger. (famous Chinese proverb).

The version I read was in Chinese Text via TTS (text-to-speech). For the record, I have also read the manga adaptation up to volume no. 5 and am keen on reading its next installment. The artwork is not bad and so far the story sticks with the original novel.

I don’t like the emperor. Selfish, egoistic, and self-centered.

LC is not bad but he forgave the sh*t easily.

I love the hard core Yaoi and S and M for this but I didn’t sign up for heart breaking sh*t the emperor does to LC! Ugh.

also, he (emperor) r*pes his uncle while PC is there like WTF?! Insensitive to the point I think that the emperor has mental illness.

To be honest, I liked the story. Not because of the r*pe scenes, but because of the heartfelt progression between the main couple.

Idk why some rated it as 1 star just because of r*pe scenes when it doesn't basically say that you have to 'like' r*pe scenes if you read it.

-The inner turmoil of the MC in his feelings for the ML is so heartwrecking.

-It's not a cringy smut yaoi story you'll find anywhere. It felt real to me and experienced tons of emotions in just 21 chapters.

-Reading it will not make you think that you "romanticize" r*pe. Honestly, my heart pained for the MC too.

-It described the normality of the human nature for gays like normality of having a family and having children.

I was honestly sad that ML "had" slept with the concubines but it's still in the past so okay. And I was honestly happy when MC didnt went for rongrong.

An emotional ride. They lived happy together :) <<less

I would never say this is a good story because duh of all the twisted stuff that happened but idk the ending was really satisfying for me. Realistic is really on the tip of my tongue. I don’t know how you want to visualize ancient eras, but for me this era emphasizes the peak of debauchery and self-indulgence. The royalty is the main representative of this. There may be myriads of achievements under their belt but there’s no covering the fact of their debauched life. The emperor was just being... more>> himself, completely inline with what was expected of him, beautiful, skilled and grand - twisted mentality. They had got to be with all the inbreeding happening! Anyway the fact that he was able to be marginally good and argumentatively devout towards his lover, was already asking for too much. Yes, I am saying it! The MC or Lu whatshisname was a dumb bloke. To expect kindness from the guy who r*ped him repeatedly is proof of his insanity. Though undeserving of the r*pe and whatever torture he got, he really dig a pit on his own. From the get go, I for one would just end my life then on there the first night it happened or even then wouldn’t go so far as to heed the words of my rapist on go seek him on whatever bridge for whatever antidote. The fact that Unspeakable things would be brought forth from the pill I was stuff with was the rapist fault, but the fact that I seeked him afterwards and chose to believe his words would be my blame. Smh. And on this I have first hand experience to scold him. Dealing with the aftermath of r*pe is a tough and confusing mental ordeal but nevertheless a mountain you can climb over. You need help, alot of help from everyone you know. Hell with the ‘can’t let anyone find out’ notion. It shouldn’t be your burden to bear, but a badge you stick to your chest as an achievement of getting past it. Anyway, it was a respite to find that in the end he got the rapist to own up to him even though that sounds twisted, atlesdt he was foolishly happy in the end. <<less

First up, let's clear a few facts. This world is full of all kinds of fiction- The soft, the brutal, Twisted romance portrayed as twisted and twisted romance portrayed as "romantic"- people need to realise that the author is in their right to write whatever they want and to judge a story (completely fictional) with how much it aligns with their moral standards (of real life) when clearly, the author intended it to be amoral/morally ambiguous is plain s*upid.

"Oh but there's r*pe in there", "I don't have problems with... more>> r*pe if it's not romanticised"- I'm sorry but nobody gives a f*ck. "There's r*pe"- Surprise, there's a "rape" tag right there, if you were too blind to see it's not our problem. "But r*pe is romanticised" Sure bro, so is "mu*der", "plunder" and whole lot of other crimes in fiction throughout. Consuming something that you know won't bode well with you and then leaving a bad review in the wake will ultimately kill the joy of those who actually enjoy it and wrote it. Why bother at all if you can't stomach non-con? Seems illogical and futile no matter how I look at it. Imagine "Money Heist" - infamous for romanticising and glorifying robbery, clearly a crime-And somebody who loathes robbery and finds it morally wrong (it actually is wrong) decides to watch it and deliberately rates it low for its "robbery romanticism". Sounds s*upid? Yeah, the same logic. If you get it, then please see yourself out.

And now I hereby declare that I try to give this review an objective eye, ignoring any negativity implicated by "non-con"/"rape". Because I'm a fan of non-con and it has no effect on my overall opinion of the story whatsoever.

Onto the review:

Truthfully speaking, this novel is somewhere above 3.5 but definitely below a 4. But I gave it a 4, because even with the flaws I find in it, it's still slightly underrated to be a 3.4 which is honestly the worst rating I've seen for a danmei.

This story is simply put torture p*rn done well and by "done well" I mean with enough drama and story elements to look forward to what happens next. It starts off rocky and ends the same.

Characters - Of course, the characters aren't anything legendary or intricately designed, They're very basic caricatures of the most overused tropes out there. But these basic bastards still evoke some emotion from you. Warning- all characters have and by that I kean

ALL CHARACTERS

have a missing nut in their heads that makes them act out of character or just plain s*upid to suit the plot.

    • ML- Sadism and psychological impairment are inherent parts of him. But I still feel he would have made for a teeny bit decent person if it wasn't for the large amass of power and authority he possessed as both the Emperor and as a near-damn perfect martial artist. With great power comes great responsibility - and Jing is the epitome of power abuse because he had zero responsibility towards his relationships, kingdom and even his own feelings. He's self-centered, self-indulgent, arrogant, unapologetic and beyond anything has a 'SUPERIOR COMPLEX'- all his feelings are centered around this one thing. This one damn thing. Anything that defies him will catch his interest - because he's too lost in his own ego. He evokes your emotions in a sense he'd boil your blood with wrath and fury and it's weird because you still root for this piece of shit. You'd come to love-hate this man or simply hate him but ultimately feel gratified that he had some character development (?), Not sure though it's a positive or negative development at times.
    • MC- A genuinely good guy who didn't deserve all the bullsh*t he went through. Poor man fell for the wrong person. But he's also kind of fascinating because despite the amount of abuse and purge he went through in the hands of the ML, what actually really breaks him almost everytime is the feeling of not getting loved by the ML. He looks strong, both inwardly and outwardly but actually weak, real weak to the ML. Half the time, the reason why the torture is bearable is because, the MC only feels bad for himself when the deed happens. After it's over with, he's indifferent to the pain that he himself went through (because he barely ever questions the abuse he's pit through) and this lackluster reaction though isn't necessarily good also makes him come across as rather strong. He also has good camaraderie with his bandit brothers and has a good conscience and grasp of his priorities (though at times he still gives in the ML).
    • Side characters - Shitty or s*upid most of the time and took advantage of the MC at one point or another. His bandit brothers were okay though despite their airheaded-ness getting the MC in trouble.
Plot - Completely romance centric and has an uneven pacing. Some elements introduced out of nowhere and some elements completely forgotten. The plot is basically---> MC (Lu Cang) trying to escape+ ML (Jing) catching him= ML torturing him or sexing him because of love or sadism. It did come off as slightly anti climactic at times though,
Spoiler

For eg; After Cang was nearly tortured to death because he was mis-assumed to have killed Jing's moonlight f*cking uncle I had expected Jing to be apologetic and regret what he did when they met the next time and have Cang not accept fir quite a while but... No. Cang just melted right into his hands and Jing sexed him even then

[collapse]

So yeah, it's nothing special but dramatic enough for masochists out there with a love for dog blood drama.

Romance- Romantic development was definitely lacking and romance as whole? Not sweet people, not at all. Just a heightened, intense version of Stockholm Syndrome and added with the unbelievably unequal power balance comes across as very toxic. It's a toxic love, but love nevertheless. Love comes in different forms and types and who's to say twisted, obsessive sh*t ain't love if the both parties acknowledge their feelings? Be it due to victim mentality or some other psychological impairment, does the cause and root of it matter than the happiness they experience? I know ML's an as*hole but it is this as*hole that makes our lovesick MC happy and therefore I'd still brace myself to call this love and wish them happiness.

Emotional Impact- If you don't shed a tear or two reading the absolute destruction this story elucidates, congrats. Because you're probably a warrior at heart. The very reason I took the time to write all this on something this objectively sub par

IS BECAUSE OF THE FEELS.

No seriously, it will f*ck with your emotions and to me, any fiction that can evoke intense emotions such as blazing anger or agonizing pain and also manages to spur a tear or two is worth it despite how bad it's technically written. Writing is truthfully sub par but we ultimately want entertainment and if that's fulfilled why bother with the rest?

Final word- Do I recommend it? Absolutely, to anyone who's got a thing for non-con or even for those with a masochistic streak in them who wouldn't mind digesting hardcore elements, this is the right treat. This is the book if you're looking to get your heart broken and mended and revel in your sadomasochistic fantasies.

Enjoy!!!

Other reviewers are so hilarious. Like are you seriously expecting to get something educational from a tropey fiction? There's a TAG for a reason. Don't be that unreasonable kid who still does things despite the clear warning all over the place.

Freaking crybabies who can't differentiate fiction to real life. Go to your idealistic kiddie romance. Or stay at shounen-ai. Or just read a bibliography, something.

Again, READ TAGS. Don't be such a kid. Leave alone mature stories if you can't tolerate it.

I love the characters, been binge read any other work of Chinese historical bl, I came across this one and become one of my favorite. The beginning of book 1 really showed how Jing forced himself upon Lu Cang, and LC developed Stockholm Syndrome tendency, but as the story gradually unfold, it was Jing that later make me vommitting blood of his cheesiness. I also love how strong character LC is, a true tsundere, and though he got deceived so many times to surrender to Jing, but he himself rarely... more>> leave his principle. I love that Jing is god like in everything that he does, leaves no weakness though he love his LC so much. I love that the personality did not differ so much from beginning to end. I came across this story only to love it. I give it 5 star! <<less

Okay so this is a 4/5 for me, but I am rating it a solid 5 due to the pathetically low rating this novel has.

So, let me start my review (+ bonus rant)

Is the ML abusive? Yes. Is the relationship mostly unhealthy? Pretty much. Is there loads of torture and trauma in this book, which the MC has to deal with thanks to the Ml? Yep....100%

... more>> Then why the 5 star rating some all will ask?

If this story was given to me as a book and claimed to have cute characters, loving relationship and fluff etc, I also would be running to give this a 1 star rating like the rest of the commentators and be yelling 'abuse, r*pe etc'. But you cannot just slap those names on a novel like this one.

One of the reasons due to which I wrote this review is because of the low ratings this novel had. Many complained of how the ML was straight up torturing the MC and this book was pure abuse and gave the book one star. I agree, they're all right, but there's no need to throw their frustration of the ML on the novel like this. This novel is rated so low not because of the story being boring but just because of one character the Ml. Like seriously ? 1 star just because of the ML and ignoring the rest of the cast and the storyline. It's not fair to both the novel and the author.

This book is self aware. The author made it pretty clear of how the relation dynamics between the MC and ML operate. The MC is completely aware of how the ML treats him and doesn't delude himself unlike the other hundred or so MCs out there. And that's why I really like this book. The MC knows what the Ml's doing to him and isn't afraid to point it out when.

REVIEW:

The relation b/w the MC and ML though being completely unhealthy, which stared as pure r*pe on one end somehow cl**ked in the end and became a genuine relationship. And the way it was done was not rushed but was beautifully drawn in. Seeing that this book is 50% forced smut and yet accomplishing a happy ending (where both the MC and ML survive and are in genuine love), fellow readers is amazing.

One problem I had with this book was that it had a lot of characters jump in and out within chapters. That's why I wanted to give this book 4 stars. I felt the side characters were abruptly cut in the story when needed, to make way for smut relation building between the MC and Ml.

About the Ml:

So the Ml's a jerk but..... He's a goddamn emperor and one of tyrannical ones too. It's pretty obvious that he'll be a tyrant who does as he pleases. Well his character does grow and he ends up growing a lot in terms of character (according to me at least). So just holding on to one thing and hating the entire novel because of that.... isn't beneficial to both the reader and the author.

So please don't thrash this novel due to the ML being a awful person, cause he is was and the novel isn't afraid to say that. There is character development on his end and though it isn't great it's still something. You could give this novel a try if you're not afraid to see such things. But like I mentioned earlier, please drop it you're uncomfortable with it and don't hate on the novel just beacuse the ML's a jerk.

EDIT: So, thanks to the novel update system my 5 star became a 4 star review X D. Plus corrections of the review. <<less

*2.5*

I liked certain aspects of this story, but some things I truly despised. One of the main ones being the r*pe. It's horrible and made me extremely uncomfortable. I honestly wasn't even expecting something like that to happen when I went into this. However, once you get passed that, the characters can be quite fascinating (not necessarily likable, just interesting), especially the emperor. He's completely insane, and I never knew what he would do next. He was kind of like a horror movie villain at times even.

The love story in... more>> this was okay. Definitely not my favorite, for obvious reasons. And it kinda felt like Stockholm Syndrome. They did, very rarely, have some nice moments together though. <<less
