Due to a Mishap, I Gave the King a Love Potion to Drink and I Became Queen

Due to circumstances, Iris needed to get married quickly. She only had one chance to capture the man in her sights.

At the Royal Ball, armed with a love potion that could manipulate body and mind, she aimed for a quiet and somber earl.

Alas!

Instead, the King, Ernest, drank the fruit wine she had dosed with the potion, and then confessed his love for her before the guests of the ball! He proposed to her under the spell of the love potion, and became rather forceful!

Is what was to follow, a sweet married life, or was it to be tainted by lies?

Where do I even begin ? This story is not just bad, it borderline unnerving...

Spoiler warning : I don't care about destroying the surprise and nor should you, but now you're warned.

Spoiler

Let's first address the MC :

She has the power to decide her own husband by herself, which means that no matter who her sister bring she can just say no. The only thing that I saw from her in the first two chapters is that she don't trust her sister nor men, with a good reason to boot, she just lost all hope in making her sister understand her (which I understand why) but know she will never have issue with the people she'll bring her. So how the f*ck did she get swayed that easily by the guy that already betrayed her ? Better, why did she even listen to his plan in the first place ? Only reason : because plot. That pissed me off. Author never needed the potion in this setting, all he/she had to do was do the same, go to the ball and get proposed by the king, which is already hard enough to refuse, especialy when you know he is bad with women. The rest of the plot till now depends on the fact that she is too DUMB (not dense, just dumb at this point) to get the clue that there never was a potion in the first place. Why ? She seemed quick witted in the first two chapters... well know what ? Don't care anymore, as she lost hope in her sister understanding her, I did in her getting back her brain.

The story :

What, there is one ? Jokes asides, there is no need in the potion, never was in fact, not with this setting, which made the story fall flat. Could have been fun if the potion was real and she really needed to get back the flask, but there was no potion in the first place, just a plot of the king to marry his beloved... why use that plot tho ? I mean, she is still active in the society, so why go this far ? Because author decided so, but I need a logic reason behind it, he isn't nobody ffs he is the king and she is an influencial noble thanks to her talent, he just has to propose and she can't refuse him, and the worst part : he knows it. The story is even slowed to no ends because of this potion, if there was no potion then she would have saw that he is serious, because they are similar, she would have begun to cultivate some feelings and this would have been a better story. Heck I could rewrite the story without the potion and still have an interesting story, would even argue that it would have been better.

[collapse]

TL;DR : The author has no story to tell and just earn time pointlessly by using a potion that never should have been there and that needed to make the MC really dumb.

Should have noted 1/5 but one bonus point to the trad because she is really patient. <<less

The translator is absolutely brilliant. Zuben's choice of words ???. Some people found the translator's comments annoying, but I think otherwise; they're very engaging. You couldn't have done better Zuben sama! Thank you so much for translating this story!

I was checking out the raws and here's what Google translate showed me "his *choke* JAUNDICE coloured eyes....."

Like seriously? Jaundice? XD ???

Normally, I'd say Japanese novels are good with smut but iffy with plot but with this novel, the smut isn't enough to give it 2 stars. Brainless, brainless, brainless. Uhoh's review is spot on. I don't know how the translator had the strength to continue with this novel but the comments peppered throughout carried me through. All the characters are shitty: Dumbass MC who the author claims is strong and independent but is really just braindead, a manipulative brother-in-law, a manipulative king who if he had opened his mouth could... more>> have ended the story in one chapter, a white lotus sister who I swear must be an evil step-sister and her entourage of brainless admirers and a sister-in-law who's a white lotus in training.

Spoiler

I sh*t you not, all the king needed to say was "dumbass bit*h who I fell in love with and stalked for more than a year, the love potion was fake and was a plot by me to marry you" and have her tympanic membrane vibrate as it does every three sentences, bring her to bed, tell her you like her small breasts and she can keep doing her cross-stitches, the end.

[collapse]

This story only earned a star because of Zuben, the awesome, patient, witty translator who is stronger than us all. <<less

Umm first of all the author's comments throughout the novel is annoying. But as the story progressed I couldn't agree with her more. I don't even know why she translated this when it seems like she's irritated by the characters. The dialogues are questionable, the characters is questionable, the whole story is questionable! I don't even care about spouting spoilers so get ready.

There really should be a r*pe tag on here because that one time he got angry at her he just went on full yandere mode. The MC's brother... more>> in law, I'm not even sure if he cared about her at all. The MC is utterly s*upid for god's sake. Sister is a shining white lotus. Sister in law is suspicious for emotional blackmailing and on her way to be a white lotus. The whole plot stemmed on the MC not standing up for herself. I don't know what ties her to her sister that she could not leave despite the malicious intentions???

Do not waste your time. <<less

Sometimes I just want to enjoy something light or even melodramatic. If I can enjoy a story in this way, then I'll willfully suspend disbelief and critical analysis, so that I can immerse myself in the story and enjoy it for what it is. If the story is written so badly that I can't even do this, then I give up on it. I don't enjoy snarking on a story (although if that's your thing, go for it).

When it comes to the Zubeneschamali translation, you really have to enjoy reading... more>> as if with a snarky friend at your shoulder who is constantly breaking your immersion and the mood of a story with their funny, cynical comments. If you get more enjoyment this way, then this translation is for you. On the other hand, even if you know it isn't prize-winning literature, but nevertheless want to immerse yourself in the world of the story just to see if you can enjoy yourself this way, snarky shoulder friend makes this almost impossible.

I find it really hard to give a review of the story itself as I know that the biggest thing that influenced my enjoyment was the translator's constant comments woven throughout the text of the story. I don't think the story was great, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been an enjoyable read for those in the mood to read it for what it is -- but I think this translation will be a frustrating read for those who don't want translator-inserted immersion-breaking commentary. (This is of course no problem for those who like snarky quips that take you right out of the story while turning the scene's atmosphere farcical, and see this as a good price to pay for a laugh.) <<less

The story is unique. I enjoy the story.

I don't mind with translator comment. Funny remark tho. Just like you read and share your thoughts with your friend.

Also I love the translator works. I love to read their works. Sometime I read a novel because I follow the translator.

This... Might be the worst novel I've ever read.

I cannot believe 37 people gave this 5 stars.

Every single character is beyond hateful and need to die in a fire. Exept those who aren't fleshed out enough for me to hate them.

... more>> Especially ML. He is literally the worst. r*pe, gaslighting, threats, more r*pe, being a complete creep. Truly, he is a vile waste of space.

Iris, the main character, is a completely brainless doormat, despite what the author tries to say. I had some pity for her at the beginning, but by now it's been completely drowned out by hatred because she is just So. f*cking. s*upid. And. Spineless.

Don't read this.

Seriously. You'll regret it.

Even if you like male yanderes and this is one of the few novels with that tag, stay away. He doesn't even count, he only likes her cause watching her crying made him c*m in his pants that one time.

Find a better novel. Any novel.

Or don't blame me for the trauma you're gonna get. <<less

I am in 2 minds with this story. One 1 hand, I agree with the other reviewers about how so many things seem to be so obvious or could be fixed with a conversation, but the story would be 5 chapters long if not for all the drama.

Her sister is beyond annoying. She really is a woman of the time period though. The only value and accomplishment of a lady was to be married. It was the greatest joy and every woman's goal. Iris isn't like that. As a lady... more>> that has grown up with a sister that drew men like bee's to honey, not to mention always having her thoughts and opinions squelched or talked over, she has become withdrawn, shy and someone that just needs a good shake.

It is very obvious from the beginning that the potion stuff is a trick. It is so obvious that it's not even worth a spoiler tag since the author doesn't hide it.

This really could have been a cute short story. But because of its length, it feels like it was drawn out and becomes dull.

Her sister is awful and every moment she is mentioned makes me want to beat her with a stick.

Her brother in law is clearly team king.

They king obviously adores her.

She is completely oblivious to things around her and is a s*upider version of the bibliophile princess. (Another light novel and manga which I would recommend over this one)

This is a story that is frustrating because you can see it's potential. It just needed to be faster paced and could have been wrapped up in 10 chapters. If it had been, it would have been a much better read. <<less

God, the Darkness-induced Audience Apathy is strong with this one. Around the early 40s, it was really hard to keep reading. I can only tolerate just so much s*upidity from characters before my "humans are s*upid tolerance" runs dry.

Heroine that was set up to be quite clever was written thicker than Mt. Rushmore.

Hero couldn't decide if he was a good guy or a yandere rapist a**hole. It's one or the other guys, not both.

Translator uses MTL if you haven't read them before, and destroys any possibility of immersion and suspension... more>> of disbelief with in-text asides. If that's your thing, great. Personally, I want to enjoy my TL notes and story separately, because scenes, where I might have otherwise sympathized with someone, were consistently, unceremoniously ruined. [Most of this is minor frustration because of how frustrating the rest of the story was. The asides were funny, but a barely enjoyable story was made irksome for lack of immersion.]

Read with patience or don't read at all. <<less

Im tempted to do a detailed reference of all the instances Iris mentions the potion. Separate it into sections, and put chapter number references. Just watch the number of her silly head.

Thats about the worst I can call her. Silly. For now.

Although I'm only halfway through, I can pretty much guess what's the 'twist' and how it's going to end already.

In the first place, the whole concept of this novel was flawed from the very start. As another person said, all the misunderstandings (which is the main thing that drives the plot forward) could've been resolved, at any moment, with a couple of words from the King. But of course he doesn't say anything, considering that literally each and every character is a major ret*rd in one way or another.

Secondly, this... more>> feels like it was written by a woman with a very specific r*pe fetish, which that alone should let you understand how uncomfortable it is to read, unless you know... you're a straight woman with a very specific r*pe fantasy.

But it still has some interesting or cute moments. It kinda works as a smut and kinda don't, but I think I've read enough to say that it won't satisfy neither a smut enthusiast nor a romance one. <<less

Not the best nor the worst novel I've read. It was decent as a time killer but not something I'd invest time and emotions in. It started good with the premise being interesting and MC being sympathetic but quickly goes downhill by chapter 20+.

The main conflict in this novel is the MC and ML's inability of actually communicating honestly with each other outside of s*x which causes a lot of misunderstandings and its just so frustrating. Like literaly they're in a middle of a confrontation and they have s*x instead... more>> of idk actually talking to each other about their problems??

I just honestly hate this misunderstanding trope and the problem just keeps getting dragged on until the story ends. Its so repetitive that I got so bored reading it but I pushed through so that I can finish this. On another hand Leticia is insipidly s*upid and I don't know how Matthias can stand her and even love her. She's a typical Mary Sue but surprisingly she's not the MC (thank goodness) and I abhore her.

Overall interesting concept but failed with the story execution. Honestly this story would've benefited more if it was shorter since there's really only 1 major conflict that the entire plot revolves around and it just felt like it kept being dragged on until the end. Would've enjoyed this more if it was less that 20 chapters but Author's too productive I guess lol <<less

Just read this due to curiousity because of the low-rated reviews lmao. Can't say this was a great story, it had a lot of plotholes and shit. I just enjoyed it because:

1.) I was amused by how s*upid the story is. Like they could've ended the novel with just 5 chapters if ML just straight-up confessed to MC. The love potion was sooo unnecessary. It just made the story funny with all the plotholes, and how all the characters, not just the MC, are so s*upid. Made me roll my... more>> eyes countless of times.

2.) The smut. I mean, duh.

3.) Also, I love the translators commentary! I have the exact same thoughts as the translator while reading the novel. It made the experience hilarious.

Anyways, it's up to you if you want to read it. Not really recommended if you want a good plot. Recommended if you have like, so much time to spare to read this. <<less

The smut was great, and the translation was spot on but I had two issues with it:

  1. The translator kept inserting notes and commentary => ruined my submergence in the story/smut
  2. Too repetitive => I think this was the author but the narration kept repeating too much for my taste. Like I get it, you feel guilty as heck, I don't need to read it 10 times per chapter
So yeah, if you're looking for smut and can overlook translator's annoying comments, then this is pretty good. Plus it is completed so you... more>> can finish it pretty quickly and not worry about waiting for the rest to come out. <<less

Ok, where should I begin? First, thankfully this story is short because I always have an urge to throw my phone while reading this. But I try best to finish it so I could give it a fair review.

Spoiler

Almost all the characters in this novel make me frustrated. First, MC. I love that she is an independent woman who doesn't rely on man to be happy. But her monologue about "love potion this" and "love potion that" greatly annoys me. But I still feel pity for her because her sister mentally abused her and later ML does that too.

When does ML mentally abused her? When he keeps lying to MC about the fact that he's not under love potion influence and enjoys MC's guilt and despair. And he said he loved her? Bull***t. And after he admits it, MC still easily forgives him (throw a table).

And MC's sister (Leticia) is the worst. I don't believe that she's really innocent and has no malicious intent towards MC. She keeps act pitiful and makes other people hate her own sister. I don't know why MC doesn't let go of her toxic relationship with her sister.

[collapse]

Although I'm disappointed with this story but still kudos for the translator. <<less

I can't say this is the best book ever written, but it's also not the worse book ever written. The positive and amusing things are the decent smut scenes. And the desire to really wanted to B*tch slap the sister and shake the ML in to standing up for her self. Zuben Was an amazing translator and I decide to play the drinking game suggested which made the book a hella lot more amusing but I think the game should also apply to the phrase 'love potion' now that would... more>> be a contest to see what ran out first your tolerance or you drink of choice (refills included). If it were not for the wonderful snark from Zuben I probably would have give up with this book.
So 5 ⭐️ for Zuben.

3 ⭐️ for the smut.

2 1/2 ⭐️ for the story and plot <<less

If you're just looking for a light read, you might want to read this one just for the fun of it. It surprised even me that I was able to finish reading this from start to finish. Every single character is questionable, I would like to talk to them about life for a second. It's honestly your typical romance smut that just blooms beautiful words everywhere to the point where I ask myself, "Why do I torture myself so?"

But even then, it ended up being addicting to read. I have... more>> no idea how, either. I just felt like I can't drop it, y'know? Also, at first, I was a bit annoyed with Zuben's comments. I mean, I don't have qualms in translator notes ever since before this, but in the beginning, I just felt like I had to flip a table somewhere. But as the story progressed, I realized that Zuben's comments were the comments that made me hang on to dear life and I'm very thankful for that.

Overall, a light read. Very interesting and makes you want to question life (in a completely different way). And sometimes, you might just want to kill every single character on the inside. *insert smiley face* <<less

I made an account just to write a review for this god awful book. I really appreciate the translator’s work, and this is in no way a reflection of the translator’s hard work - this is purely due to the book being so dumb. The smut is good, but the plot is so annoying and the characters make me want to scream!! I stuck with it until now hoping it would get better, but no, still friggin annoying.

If you’re going to read for the smut, then sure, give it a... more>> try, but if you have more than 1 brain cell you will likely get annoyed. <<less

I'm here for the smut. But man! That storyline. I dont know how many times I rolled my eyes everytime the FL mentioned the Love Potion. After reading this, my whole existence was exhausted.

I really like the translator though. So funny, especially the comments within the novel made the whole thing hilarious. I had fun reading this but my head hurts. I was surprised I even managed to finish this.
