All Hail Asada ty for picking this novel up. Great novel concept for a vr, great translation quality and update speed. Been hoping for this novel to be picked up for ages. 10/10 stars.

This novel is frustrating because it could easily be at least a 4 star if it just stopped doing a few really irritating things. The MC is acting as if this is real life and not a game. Very minor spoilers, but ... more>>
Spoiler

his parents get killed as collateral damage when they were going to meet up and later in the chapter he's remembering the image of their dead bodies and gets really angry and sad as if his parents actually died

[collapse]
. He then literally says to himself "What kind of people would come after me for revenge instead of apologizing?" It's not as if they were just accidentally committing a massacre. These are your stereotypical bad guys, but yeah they're going to kowtow and say they're sorry.

The story is decent enough. So far it's your pretty standard VRMMORPG story with some mildly interesting concepts. The problem is that they don't take those concepts and actually do anything interesting with them. The fact that the story is about a guy who voraciously reads books of all sorts and yet he hasn't displayed any sort of intelligence, tactical skills, or hell, even any creativity is a major let down. Maybe it changes in the future, but the fact that there would be no difference between this MC and a MC where he powers up by staring at walls for hours on end is really disappointing.

The first 10-20 chapters were absolutely atrocious when it came to padding out the word count. The MC would think something and then it would pretty much just copy, paste that line saying he was doing that thing he just said he was going to do. They'd also explain a concept when it was introduced, then say in the following paragraph "That means..." and then just repeat what they just said in a more long-winded manner. It isn't nearly as bad at this point, but there's still a handful of lines each chapter that are just pointlessly repeated.

The translation quality for the first 14 chapters is bad. Once it switches to Asada translations it gets much better. There's a brief dip when a new translator takes over but quickly goes back to being pretty good. <<less

not a fan of multiple POV but aside from that the story is light and fun with a grossly OP MC who really just wants to read more books. A very relaxing read so far. Dunno where it will go from here but I liked the first part, nonsense or not.

Edit Note: *** Early Access Paywall. Chapters will be released for free eventually.***

Pros:

  • Somewhat Protagonist - He is fairly normal compared to other MMO based novels on this site. Only quirk he has is that he likes to read everything, which I find somewhat charming.
  • Human Interactions - Some of the human interactions have been pretty good so far, though somewhat sparse. He seems to be interacting more as time goes on. *** I like the interaction with his friend when he tells him the secret about his character. I think it was something along the lines of "I only told you, cause it's you". ***
Cons

  • Unbalanced Game - Not a huge deal for me, but like most game based novels; game seems pretty unbalanced.
Waiting for further judgement

  • NPCs have not been the greatest so far.
  • One "villain" interaction. Not the greatest, but not that bad for me either. Waiting for other interactions.
Edit: SullivanSlight left another review that was based on what the translators were doing, but his are slightly more understandable than the previous reviews. The Odin thing was eventually changed back to the more accurate description of Archmage's Descendent. Other than that I don't think the translations take too many liberties, but then again I don't know korean and can't look at the source material, so maybe Sullivan knows more about that. The TL note weren't that intrusive to me, but maybe I phased them out and they don't show up enough for me to care or I got used to some other translators doing it. I think some of them just added context as well. Either way there is a new translator after chapter 46. <<less

Great novel, previous issues with the translator don't seem to merit the low rating anymore, so I changed it to the better fitting 5 stars.

The novel itself contains many of the usual hooks and
It is an interesting and fascinating read, with a nice theme it keeps up until now and a main character without any noticably inconsistent characterization for plot reasons, which I appreciate greatly.

I am writing this review for two reasons.

1: I am finding many of the reviews objectionable. According to the premise, and we see that in the earlier chapters, the MC is a bookworm. Rather passive, and deeply interested in books. Logical to a fault (his decision to work out to improve his stamina to read more?) and like most people, not used to violence. He’s a BOOKWORM. Not a typical power obsessed KR protagonist, with a tragic past, but apparently a happy home life, with kind parents. So he’s... more>> perfectly in character to not worry about power leveling until someone tries to kill him in the game. Wishy washy, not used to dealing with the ruthless nature of gaming guilds, not used to people who are violently jealous of his OP stats, or obsessively aggressive in collecting powers and items. He’s BOOKWORM. I find it very refreshing and consistent with the premise of the story, for the author to write about our MC this way.

2: The translator farming reviews and reading lists on her (?) website was amusing.?

Many, many of us her on NU will really GET this character. I certainly see myself in the protagonist. I hope very much that the author who seems to well understand the motivations and personality of bookworms and keep it in this style. I find how he deals with the aggressive gaming types as a bookworm very interesting, and hope to see it continue. I love this series. <<less

I really really like this novel. Having read hundreds of Japanese and Korean light novels by now, I really enjoy these VR type stories with a great story and interesting characters. This isn’t a party of characters, nakama, or harem, it’s just one polite and intelligent young man who loves to read, and we can already see him propelling to the top of this VR world in his pursuit of reading. Absolutely love it! Do give this a try

When this story was translated last 2017 I was caught by the teaser. It's a story of a reader being true to his passion and reaching new heights in fulfilling it by getting into a world trending VRMMO just to read :) My roled model right there. LOL so I was frustrated when the original translator disappeared but absolutely thrilled with MagicFishCat and TheMonitor who took this project.

If you want some new outlook on how VRMMO games can be played stay for this book. If your a reading addict then... more>> keep reading this translation. So far the story has kept me hooked with it's slow pace and light hearted vibe. This really has a unique plot and I want to read it til the end. :) <<less

Thanks Asada for picking this up!

I just went through the 22 first chapters and I love this novel. It is a bit slow paced but not in a bad way in my opinion. The hero isn't completely s*upid in regards of things other than books and that's what made me put 5 stars on this novel. The translation is good and the release frequency appears to be high so I hope it will continue like that!

This is really interesting... it was fun reading this novel with MC's personality... Not only that, at least MC have some common sense in gaming experience though he lacked a bit when it comes to reading...

I'm very thankful to Asada translation to pick this novel up... keep up the good works

Damn the story progression is quite enjoyable. Making the fantasy premise a post AI virtual simulation game experience allows for suspension of belief more effectively than the conventional isekai. Instead of blaming the author for the unreasonable bullsh*t that's in the story, you can blame the fictional game developers*taps brain*. The part that is particularly unique about this series is the mysterious attention to detail the game developers put into the world building, in particular the tens of thousands of books unique to the game, as well as the depth... more>> of relationships that can occur even between NPCs, making you wonder whether there is a deeper purpose to it. The blend of interactions between NPCs and multiple competing players becomes a glue that binds plot points together. The frequent quips and comments from the developers overseeing the progression of the players are also very fun, it's like having observations from god every few chapters in your isekai.

Some complaints:

  • the transitions to different character perspectives are extremely abrupt and rather frequent, making it a chore to follow at times. The translators should at least put a divider between the perspectives.

it is a good novel it is just too bad that the translator seems to be on a power trip here, even going so far as to say do not tell spoilers even with a tag, despite spoiling the novel himself in the same comment previously.
along with the unprofessional translator notes I would suggest leaving this to see if a better translator
picks it up.

I really enjoy this book. As the name suggests this book is about a Reader who obsessively reads anything and everything. It's not really fast paced and I guess people think his character is bland. His main goal is to read. Pretty much any actions he takes is to advance to more books and libraries. BUT I think there's a lot more to his personality than that. Right now it's just kind of covered up because of his obsession. I dont know where this story is going but I'm looking... more>> forward to it.
Spoiler

Plus I think maybe there was a foreshadowing that all his reading in the game isn't just changing his avatars character stats but also maybe in reality as well. Dont know but can't wait to read more.

The MC is way too OP and has too many lucky encounters, but the story, so far, is written in a very simple way (with no brainless antagonists) leading to a surprisingly enjoyable read. The MC's journey is pretty solo- and most of the times he is just ensconced in the library, getting quests from the books. We also get to read the NPCs point of view... Looking forward to when he joins a guild - his behavior/relations with the guild, considering he needs to kill huge monsters as part... more>> of skill-quests. <<less

I suppose the first 50 chapters might be boring as the MC started the game mostly to read books in the library. However, later on he starts fighting and finishing up quests. What makes this novel a bit different from others of the same genre and setting is that the quests are different. The quests aren't just "oh deliver this" or "do this" or "defeat xxx". The quests are very interesting as it seems like the NPCs have a mind of their own and both sides of fighting can have... more>> users accept quests. The plot for the continuous quest in chapter 70+ is really interesting... <<less

As soon as the story reached the second town the author instantly forgot that it was supposed to be a mmo. Now it's delving into the evidently sentient (!) npc's perspectives about politics and history while the MC engages with normal game systems elsewhere. This doesn't actually make any sense unless it's one of those 'mmo that's actually accessing a real world' stories. It's a bit of a mess, but an unintentionally funny mess.

Very good to pass time and just enjoy. Nothing worth getting invested in but a good slice of life. It's pretty much smooth sailing for the MC and although many flags are raised, only a few actually happen. (Which I like cause I hate foreshadowing) There's no romance atleast until c255 and it doesn't seem there'll be any.

The over description of everything is kinda annoying but you'll get used to it soon enough. I usually like Multiple POV but I don't want to see the POV of a person who... more>> appears and dies in the same chapter without leaving any impact! But I like OP MCs being overpowered and I don't like watching the MC suffer. So, if you're like me, you should definitely give it a try. <<less

Its a nice OP MC fantasy, which holds well for about 65% of the novel, but towards the end, there is an event that locks the story in a certain direction that starts to go more and more crazy. To the point where the author himself gives up and rushes the end.

TLDR: The author shot himself in the foot after 65% of the novel and bled the novel to death in the end.

Not as bad as 2.5/5 stars.

not as good as 3/5 stars.

i'll give this 2.9/5 stars.
