Yan Wushi had walked a path full of blood and corpses.

He did not believe in the good nature of humanity. Even more so, he did not believe that there could be someone with great kindness and sense of justice, who would be so considerate of others without asking anything in return.

One day, Shen Qiao, who was the sect leader of Mount Xuandu, the number one Daoist sect under the heavens, was challenged to a duel but somehow fell off the cliff.

Yan Wushi happened to pass by down there.

Seeing Shen Qiao who was seriously injured to the point of dying, he suddenly came up with a perfect idea…

After thousands of autumns, who could stay eternal?

I love this novel so much it hurts. Now it is definitely one of my most favourite novels out there. Thousand Autumns has a special place in my heart.

I enjoyed absolutely every single word, paragraph, chapter... I was so immersed in the story that I just couldn't stop reading.

I loved all of it. The story as well as the characters. There were things that happened in ways I didn't expect and things some characters did that left me thinking.

Shen Qiao. I think Yan Wushi wasn't the only one who didn't... more>> expect A-Qiao to be such an amazing character. I was surprised as well. There are, of course, many other stories with main characters with a golden heart, who suffer and go through hell but would still rather break than bend. But somehow Shen Qiao felt so real to me, not just some saintly attributes attached to him, but rather as if it was the true him.

Everytime he'd cry, I would too, when he was happy, I would be overjoyed.

Yan Wushi was also something I didn't expect - for him to be as bad as he was in the majority of the novel first part of the novel. I was almost a little scared of him at that time. That's why it was so satisfying when Yan-zongzhu realised that his calculations and estimations failed when it came to Shen Qiao. They terribly failed and was the best failure of his life.

I am so happy that I got to read this amazing story, including all of it's heartwarming moments, the heartbreaking ones, as well as the slow-burn love story which is truly one of a kind. <<less

Thousand Autumns, and anything by the author really, is a breath of fresh air in an oversatured BL Chinese historical genre filled with tiring cliches.

What’s so different here? It has some of the most realistic characters and relationship growth I’ve read. Also, I love it when an ML remains true to character and isn’t contrivedly bent in ways to make the relationship progress faster.

I’m going to read all of the author’s books.

mc: shen qiao

summary: contains spoilers

Spoiler

(relationship) MC loses a battle and becomes crippled. ML saves MC and keeps him around to with, believes that no one in the world is inherently nice and MC is cave into depravity sooner or later. ML and MC become close to the point that MC believes them to be friends, but ML severs that trust when he sells him out to the enemy. MC loses his cultivation in the process and hits a low point in his life. but he manages to relearn his cultivation and even saves ML when he was ambushed by five powerful enemy factions. ML lives but adopts split personalities for a brief period of time that reveal a more caring side to him - which charms MC - and eventually he forgives ml.

(jianghu) many characters in the novel were on the hunt for a powerful set of books that can enlighten martial artists to new heights. ML and MC were part of the search as they both incurred major injuries to their cultivation that supposedly the books can heal. MC eventually obtains all five books by the end of the novel, and earns a spot in the top ten strongest martial artist. ML challenges the current most powerful martial artist for the no.1 spot and wins by a narrow margin.

(politics) both MC and ML supported the former emperor as they both believe him to be the most competent of the lot. his successor was anything but, and they had to deal with the fallout of his tyranical rule after he ascended the throne. the dynasty was overthrown in the aftermath of a rebellion they supported.

thoughts

this novel is everything you want in a wuxia story, and mxs really outdid herself with the stories and characters she portrayed. there were so many facets to the plot and although the succession politics was complex it wasnt hard to follow at all. side characters were all well written, and the main characters even more so.

shen qiao is grew up sheltered most of his life. he used to live high on the mountains and didnt concern himself with worldly affairs or politics. this was how he cultivated his martial arts. it was only after his defeat from banbu peak that forced him to experience the highs and lows of the secular world, and it made him realize that his previous way of cultivation would only lead him to a bottleneck in the future. it was only after facing obstacles after obstacles, betrayals, hardships, and meeting all sorts of people from tyrants to martyrs, that he was able to hit his lowest point and achieve a breakthrough in his martial arts. shen qiao went through massive changes and by the end of the novel he is no longer the same gullible and naive person that he was at the start. he knows to stand his ground when he is wronged, and he knows how to demand respect from others. yet he never became the cruel person that yan wushi thought he would become - he remains honest and understanding, and gives back tenhold of what he received from others. he now knows how to appraise someone's character holistically, rather than focusing only on their good points.

on the flip side, yan wushi is someone who only believes that evil is inherent to humans and sees shen qiao as someone who hides his evil underneath a cover of good. he kept shen qiao around only to see if he could bring out that cruelty. to his disappointment, it did not, and he loses interest. after a near death incident, we learn that yan wushi actually has a caring side to him through his split personalities that he adopts - though he thinks that those are not his true self. later, however, it's clear that they provided insight into his feelings that he's kept hidden for so long. eventually he makes peace with the fact that he does care for shen qiao, despite how they still have vastly different morals. after overcoming that barrier, he chases after shen qiao wholeheartedly.

after yan wushi's betrayal, shen qiao has always kept him at an arms length to avoid being hurt again. so to no one's surprise that hes unable to return yan wushis advances. its only near the end of the novel, after yan wushi challenged hulugu to a death match and will very likely die a second time, that he realizes the gravity of the situation. his emotional response is no longer apathy but deepseated fear. (he was so anxious that he even drunk-cried and it was the cutest but most heart wrenching scene ever.) yan wushi realizes that shen qiao does reciprocate his feelings wont show it. it's only in the extras after shen qiao leaves on a self discovery journey to sort out his feelings that he finally affirms the relationship.

[collapse]

ANYWAYS I love how despite all the sh*t they went through, they both stuck to their own morals and it somehow works. shen qiao didnt blacken and neither did yan wushi become a softie good guy. they both know each others boundaries, know that they both do things differently, they dont get in each other's way. they just... have such an amazing relationship its fascinating to read and the extras provide the perfect amount food and the fact that its implied that 20+ years down the line when yan wushi is 60 and shen qiao is 40 that they're still together and traveling the world hand in hand..... just UGH. love it.

honestly I was so damn emotional finishing this story I could not accept the fact that its over. hands down one of the most impactful thing ive read. <<less

This novel deserves more than 5 stars alone from just the level of glee and satisfaction I felt for Shen Qiao whenever he blows others expectations of him out of the water. I enjoyed the world building, the poetic action sequences, and the laughs I got from Yan Wushi giving people sass. Will have to come back and finish this novel when I can find some good translations.

Thousand Autumns is an example of a story where a "good" character is not defined by strength or intelligence. Although Shen Qiao is indeed a powerful character, it's not limited to physical ability. He is morally just and his greatest strength is that he stays true to himself and nothing can tempt him from going astray. I love how the other main character, Yan Wushi, is Shen Qiao's foil yet they respect each other's opinions. Both characters are very strong (mentally and physically) and won't hesitate to achieve their goals.

Another binge reading. This is so interesting. I am so into the martial art world and the swords etc. I really enjoyed it. The plot flows well and the character, the development, the romance are all soo great! The translation is beautifully done, it's a pity that it isn't completely translated yet. MTL is still kinda hard for me lol. Hopes that there will be a completed proper translation in the future, I would definitely re-read it again by then. Anyhow, it is great. Give it a try, highly recommend!!!

I... more>> really love Meng Xi Shi's writing styles, the wuxia world under her pen came out amazingly real and beautiful. Peerless written by the same author is also so great! <<less

The novel main focus is Shen Qiao's development, how his view of the world changes as he comes in contact with it. After falling off the cliff it is really as if he's reborn, he experiences ALL kinds of hardships, some due to fate some due to....*sigh*. He's of the most lovable and inspiring MCs there can be; he represents all that is good and meets the ML that represents all that is evil, as you can guess it is interesting but also very painful. I think it's important to... more>> mention that romance it's not something you're going to find much of in this novel, the relationship between the MC and ML is indeed important for the development of both characters and the development of the plot overall but not precisely because of its romantic nature.

There are lots of politics and intrigues, especially considering that it's based on some historical elements, it can get confusing so it's not a light-hearted plot at all, but it's exciting nonetheless. Some characters that at the start didn't seem important end up being very relevant so you can't overlook anybody.

About the relationship of the MC and ML:

Spoiler

It's until the very very very end of the main story (meaning without the extras) and they actually get together until the extra chapters. The romance was of my least favorite parts of the novel, individually the ML is also very interesting and has a lot of depth as well so I was also looking forward to him through the reading, it was just them getting together that left me a bit of a bittersweet feeling.

[collapse]

Overall it's very interesting, the author's writing is very nice, it truly makes you picture vivid images and feelings. The main character's development is really well done, you can see the growth and depth of Shen Qiao, I ended up very fond of him. The plot can be a bit heavy but once you pick up the pace it's interesting. <<less

For those who don’t like wuxia but want more romance and drama, this might not be for you. However, I really enjoyed this read because it is beautifully written, full of daoist philosophy, and focuses on the nature of what is deemed good or evil.

A lot of so generic villains are extremely likable and on the other hand the supposed “good” characters appear conniving to me. I guess it goes back to what the ML said about demonic sects of how they are honest in their evil while the good... more>> sects will go around back stabbing.

The MC who was once sheltered living away from the secular life comes to realize the difficulties of everyday life. He tastes kindness and evil, but strives to believe in goodness. The ML falls for him because of this, but it took A WHILE. Their relationship is really something else. <<less

First thing first, the romance department is understaffed.

I’m definitely a reader who is here for the romance and I honestly don’t know how the MC fell for the ML at all. The relationship between the main couple was well paced but it dragged on too long towards the end because of how the ML treated the MC. I did enjoy the relationship between the mains but I still can’t understand how the romance happened hahaha.

I hate every ounce of politics but the politics in this story is bearable. The storyline... more>> is good and I liked the side characters a lot. Overall, a good read with frustrating romance. <<less

I started to read this novel after the Peerless. To be honest, this on lacks a lot. First of all, one of the main advantages of Peerless was compact and easy plot, with little politics - here it is the opposite.

Can't help myself to feel so bored struggling through all that historical gibberish.

This is a novel worth reading! Main character, Shen Qiao, fell from the top position in a righteous sect to the very bottom and learned about humans from their worth side. This is a novel about what being a good person means and how can you survive in a cruel world while showing kindness and being true to your morals.

Characters are very well-build and three-dimensional, they seem like a real person with their own beliefs and reasons behind their actions. I like how ... more>>

Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi don't start very well at the start and they can't trust each other yet but it's only to be expected- they have completely different world views so it would be weird if they fell in love just like that

.

Poems describing fighting styles or their battles are also a very good choice and they fit the writing style entirely. It's one of the best wuxia novels out there for sure. <<less

Although the ML is the biggest piece of sh*t and deserves to rot in the deepest parts of hell.. I was moved by the calm und optimistic nature of the MC. His way of being able to get up after being mercilessly crushed made me cry so hard. I've seen some reviewers call him 'spineless' but I don't agree at all. You don't need to be a macho manly man and beat up people left and right to be considered 'strong'. He's so mentally strong It's admirable. The MC naturally... more>> does lack in the strength department after being poisoned and falling off a cliff.. Expecting him to recover so quickly is just not realistic at all. The ML pushes the MC into very nasty situations which damage his body further and destroy the progress he's made while recovering. This novel is not the 'I like you that's why I bully you' but the 'I bully you because I want to see you suffer' kind. So yea don't expect to see a change of heart from the ML. Such a good novel with quality tl's.

Love the MC as he doesn't bore you nor does he give off that White Lotus sickliness of being a saint. The way the author portrays his emotions are really heart-felt and poignantly human. I thought the ML was going to be reprehensible as was told, but he's been likable so far. Maybe his cruel and manipulative ways will unexpectedly strike in the later chapters as we read further in.

Still, the translator is great, even if the updates are semi-slow, but are totally worth... more>> waiting for. <<less

Up until now, I can't find any fault with this novel. The plot is gripping, politics is well written and interesting and I really loved the dynamic between the characters.

This is a preliminary review though, but I hope Thousand Autumns won't disappoint in later chapters.

Picked up the novel after watching the donghua, and GOD am I late to the party. Thousand Autumns is the 5th Danmei I've read, the other 4 being (of course) MXTX's holy trinity and 2ha. Before starting TA, Scum Villain was the only other Danmei I genuinely loved & reread/rewatched multiple times.

I still love SVSSS but Thousand Autumns exceeded all my expectations. Every aspect of the book seemed to be an perfect fit for my novel-reading preferences; plot-heavy with romance as a side plot, intriguing and unique main characters who... more>> don't willy-nilly change their personalities because they fell in love and a slow-burn romance where actions speak louder than words.. I think Meng Xi Shi might be my new favourite author lol

Thousand Autumns is definitely not for everyone, especially if you enjoy pure love CPs. Yan Wushi is an as*hole through and through. He doesn't regret the things he did, because he's genuinely incapable of feeling regret. Shen Qiao, for the most part, just tolerates Yan Wushi's presence and curses him out inside his head, only nearing the end of the novel does he finally open his heart again. Watching how their personalities develop from chapter 1 to extra 13 is a very rewarding process.

Here's hoping season 2 of the donghua comes out soon (sob)

Personal fav side characters:
1) Yu Shengyan + Bian Yanmei, Huanyue Sect should consider getting into stand-up comedy because everyone there is funny as hell
2) Zhao Chiying, the Bixia Sect Leader. I pray that she'll recruit a talented disciple one day so she can finally stop sighing in her heart
3) Gu Hengbo and Yuan Ying!! Shen Qiao's younger martial siblings. Appeared quite late into the story but I did enjoy the few bits of screentime they received <<less

This novel is absolutely fantastic. Our MC shen qiao is the epitome of righteousness while our ML Yan wushi is the epitome of wickedness. What I love the most about this novel is that they stay true to their characters. MC goes through the most horrible things and betrayal yet do not lose his righteous nature while the ML stays true to his wicked nature and do not get whitewashed either.

If you wish to read a soul searching and thought provoking novel, this is the one for you.

Whatever I wanted to convey was already expressed by @Gerboker, so I definitely implore everyone to go and read that comment once (doesn't matter if it's to your liking or not as taking others perspective can be considered okay especially reading something like this), as everything was noted down by them from beginning to end in very articulate form. Especially with the traumatic comparisons between thousand autumns and my one of the most favourite HOB due to similar characteristics of MCs.

In the end, I just want to say that MC... more>> needs a good and strong mental health class to recover with what people like yan wushi, yu ai, his own sect people, other sects people, that c*ckroach chen gong, and many more.

LOL!!!!!

I rather ship Hulugu and MC, in terms of romance as the current one is really depressing and below par (you can't tell me you're not confused as I'm with how MC fell for that scum anyways)....

    • overcoming challenges especially qi fengge as past resentment on Hulugu's or taking on master fight over as a disciple on Shen qiao's part and changing with times
    • after making mistakes and rectify in more satisfying way (like kunye involvement where Hulugu regret and will not definitely belittling MC by sending him over to enemies hand just for own amus**ent as Hulugu's character is more stabilised compared YW)
    • and last but not least healing each other (after defeating that yan-sshole wuss-hi) as they further went down on the road of martial arts way on that little white deer A-qiao along with Duan weyuang babysitting Shiwu, yuwen song and dong yin.
Let's all normalise romance with not uniting victims with their abusers (emotional and physical in any form) !!!! <<less

Reading it to the end, and even keeping in mind that ML is scum through and through, yet by the end I still can't understand why MC fall in love with ML. I can understand how ML falls for MC tho cause he make it clear. MC on the other hand, I just feels like he's simply going with the flow, got attached to ML, kind of took him under his wings, even though ML betrayed him again and again, and just somehow settled down.

Maybe there's something I missed on... more>> my first read that make the story, although vibrant in it's own way, kind of unexcited for me. Simply, I didn't care for any of the characters, be good guy or villains by the end.

Maybe I'll see things better on my future reread...

One thing that did manage to give me a little joy are the extra. <<less
