The Daily Task of Preventing My Disciple from Turning to the Dark Side

Description

As the number one pill alchemist of the immortal world, Mu Chen had always believed that it was because he had single-mindedly focused on concocting pills that led to him to neglect disciplining his disciple. Which in turn, caused his disciple to be led astray by the seduction of devil cultivation, leading to the three realms to fall to disaster.

After his rebirth, Mu Chen resolved to properly teach his disciple, give him the very best resources, earnestly love him, carry him close to his heart, teach him by way of example, and didn’t let him grow corrupt.

Sure enough, his disciple became more and more “intimate”. Every day his disciple even crawled into his bed, rubbing against his chest and clinging to his thigh. It was just that his expression isn’t exactly quite right……

The first part of the story was fun, the MC was sent back in time and didn't know why, so he decided to do everything differently to change the future

then the ML grows up and it all goes downhill for me ... more>>
Spoiler

the ML has also been reborn and has decided that the MC is going to be his forever, no matter what the MC wants

The MC is poisoned and instead of giving him the antidote the ML r*pes him repeatedly and forces him to sign a contract tying their lives together, if one dies the other dies and this contract will follow them into their next lives

This is not romantic, this is creepy and I never bought in to the romance after that

[collapse]

I kept with it because (thank goodness) there are no explicit smut scenes and I was curious about who the mastermind was behind the previous life's tragedy, and this is where the story falls apart (again)

I got bored waiting for any kind of investigating into who was behind the previous live's tragedies. All I got was more and more despicable behavior from the ML and s*upidity from the MC

I'm only a few chapters from the end and I can't keep on going. It is a chore to keep reading, so I'm dropping it <<less

Dull, uninteresting, boring, tedious, shallow, dreary, monotonous, exhausting, onerous...

Think this is a pretty lame review so far? Well, it's still better than this novel.

It hurt me in so many ways: it took away the time I could've spend on something that is actually worth reading, it bore me to death with all the uselessness of the described events, and, finally, it forced me to drop it, even though I absolutely always try to finish what I've started. It is so bad, I marvel at how anybody even gave it a... more>> good rating.

Not to go into details too much, as why the novel is problematic has been discussed here countless times, I will just say that the characters are so insipid that cardboard cutouts have more life in them. There is a great discrepancy between how the author tries to portray them and the actual impression the reader gets from their actions. I did not like either of them, as they rarely act as human being. They are simply the epitome of egotism and pretension. Their "love story" is sickening, and I am not even talking about the later developments of the plot line.

And the plot line is... Well, there was something about it, but I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe, because I started skipping somewhere on chapter 20 or even earlier, as I could not bear actually reading it any longer. The world is as flat as the characters who live in it and hardly even exists outside of the room MC and ML are in. There's nothing there, it's a barren wasteland populated by people with inverted morals and corrupt understanding of a concept of a good and respectable man. <<less

Firstly, the translation. The one on Flying Lines reads like a barely edited MTL (probably is one) and it was mostly that that degraded the whole reading experience. The one on Snowy Codex was better (and not an MTL) but the English was still a little bit awkward. So if you're a grammar nazi, this series is not for you qwq

Secondly, I agree with some of the other reviewers--that two-star review by winter-t is very misleading. It made me expect some kind of monster of a toxic 'yandere' character but... more>> the ML here doesn't even qualify as one lol. There are plenty of other books you can read if you want to see how actual toxic looks like. He treats the MC, manipulative, yes, but very well, and is very considerate and understanding as well. The love and s*xual attraction were also mutual, although the MC was in denial at first. The r*pe did happen and ML was coerced into signing an irrevocable couple contract while he was under the influence of the aphrodisiac (that another cannon fodder villain poisoned him with), but after that, the MC beat the ML up for a day and then accepted it, more or less. In fact, I feel like their relationship wouldn't have been able to progress if that event didn't happen so that was actually an incredibly important plot point. But more than that, I scorn pretentious people who act like their beliefs are the law and get butthurt for other people, (it isn't even a person but a character in this case). Likee the person in question could accept it without a problem, why can't you??? The MC also habitually beats up and kicks the ML, and although that's apparently 'his way of showing his affection', by the MC's words, I feel like it makes them pretty even.

Anyways, the characters weren't very well-rounded, the tropes/chiches in this novel were quite common and the twists were not unique and very tragically, there was no smut until the very end. I would've liked to see more side stories of the other characters like Jing Ting, Yu Tianyi, and the mysterious father. The ending was also very abrupt and it didn't feel quite like an ending... is there a sequel or extras we're missing? My overall impression of the book is that it's just readable (unlike 'Every Day the Protagonist Wants to Capture Me') though, but I would like to read the continuation if it existed. <<less

Great novel, just a bit heavy read with no particular angst. Beware of tags, please read carefully before you proceed so after that, you wont come to the reviews to complain about it. Don't nitpick every single g*ddamn detail, if you want a perfect novel, then this is not for you. If you want a light and sweet fluff all the way then this is not for you.

I'm at chapter 45 for a few weeks now and can't read any further.. It is boring..

The teacher blindly believes his disciple.. And his child rearing method left me speechless.. Give him everything so that he wouldn't covet anything ??? Wtf dude !!!

It was good in the beginning.. But now I don't know if later it'll get any better or not..

At the beginning, it was quite enjoyable and humorous. As it progressed, it started to feel a bit tedious and repetitive, though. I am sure I would have loved the story if it was shorter, but as it is, I would rate it as 'ok'.

At some points I was a little confused - it might have been the translation, but some of it didn't make much sense (especially what was said about the levels of cultivation of the characters or the relations of characters inside the sect).

Some of it was... more>> very predictable (the two main characters were a bit too OP thanks to their rebirth, which made fights a bit too one-sided), but there were a few instances when I was pleasantly surprised (some side characters that at first glance looked like they will be your usual s*upid cannon-fodder turned out to be relatively interesting).

I couldn't help but notice some similarities to The Scum Villain's Self-saving System - the relationship and behaviour of the Master and his disciple, the Master's violent friend and fellow master of the sect, the disciple's father's status (and intentions)...

I would probably recommend this to someone who doesn't mind too much that the plot is not very deep. The story is more on the light, funny and cute side. Try it out, you might find it amusing even if it might not hold your attention till the end. <<less

The story was really cute at first but I gradually lost interest as the story went on. I felt the story becoming dull and I basically rushed towards the end because I wanted to finish the series amd just get it over with, I even felt that the author felt that way too in the last three chapters.

Got kinda annoyed with the MC's tsundere personality and found the ML two-dimensional. There are A LOT of problems with the morality of this series too that made it seem... questionable. Like there... more>> is r*pe, coercion, and all kinds of bad crap but it gets brushed aside like it's nothing significant... The couple interaction was just really baffling to me towards the latter half of the series. It was cute and creative at first but the series wasn't able to keep me fully invested in the characters or story. <<less

Watching the MC raise the ML while being deceived by the ML was cute. I liked many of the interactions with the side characters

[collapse]

However, the story kind of didn't make much since and felt rushed towards the end.?

Spoiler

So this Nature's Law wanted to... not sure if he just wanted to control all of the Mu family or just wanted to control the Reincarnation Pearl inside the MC... but it just didn't seem to matter much. And how it was resolved didn't make me care. ?

There is plenty of mush between the MC and ML, but the smut is lacking. Seriously lacking.?

Overall, a decent story but not great. Average ⭐⭐⭐ <<less

~Ack~ I didn't mean to hit 5 but actually meant to hit 4... too much coffee. Anyway minus the very questionable r*pe in this story I rather enjoy it.... more>>
Spoiler

I will say that for those of you who have gone through multiple relationships, the forced marriage part will probably be more hard hitting. I myself have only been in one long relationship and still am so the thought of being with one person only, for life (even if forced) , is still palatable... not to mention if you're kinda unrealistically possessive (like myself), the thought of your partner staying connected to you forever is kiinddaa nice ~DON'T SMACK ME PLEASE~ with that being said I do not agree with what the ML did but I KINDA see where he is coming from (even us females can be horribly possessive, lucky you if you are not)

[collapse]

I like how the translator does their thing. Good translators can be somewhat hard to find on this site.

Overall the story is pretty good if your ok with "darker romances". Don't be fooled by the first chapters, things don't stay fluffy and this is foreshadowed in the ML's thoughts even when he's is still a "child". If you read all those tags and thought you were going to get all fluff then you really shouldn't complain too much. If any of those tags are questionable to you then just don't read it and save your review and/or stars for something you would actually read. Reading and reviewing when you know you don't like the tags (which are clearly there) is like walking in to a gay bar that you know is a gay bar and complaining that's its full of gays.... sounds silly right? that's cause it is, so avoid being silly. If you know you don't like the tags then avoid reading it, it saves you time and saves readers who are ok or like those tags from getting reviews that go against those tags. Don't be protesting on our lawn basically. We know what we are reading and we are ok with it, thank you for the concern though.

P.S. for those of you who enjoy this kinda novel of "darker romance" I can suggest another one that's relatively new to this site. It's called "Desharow Merman". If you like this novel quite a bit you'll probably like this other one too. They both are dark romances, fantasy based, Chinese, and of course BL/yaoi. Have fun <3 <<less

Okay, so to the person who wrote a whole rant about why ML's behaviour is okay and that's just how he is, and we can't judge him by normal standards?

Well what do you want to judge him by? The standards of a mass mu*dering psychopath? (If that's so, then it's okay I suppose. For you)

In my opinion any argument that has 'yes he did r*pe him but-' incorporated into it, is invalid (like seriously what is wrong with you?).

like, ML just straight up r*pes MC when MC had just come to rescue him disregarding his own wellbeing.

Then proceed to f*cking ens*ave him? Like wtf?

Honestly it was kinda my fault for not properly reading the tags before reading this. For those who liked this (not talking about those who are still reading the early chapters) and think that this type of relationship is okay, go seek help.

If you recognise that the ML is clearly insane and a menace to society, but still find this alluring (since it's not actually real). As long as you are not harming anyone. You do you. <<less

There aren't very unique qualities of the novel, and the writing is sub-par: I feel a lot of details were glossed over and leaves a lot to be desired. I did enjoy it as a light reading, but in the end I became bored and found the travelling scenes bland.

Almost every attractive male in the story is conveniently paired with another, and I find the foreshadowing of it rather amateur-ish instead of charming. That's just my own pet peeve though, some may enjoy these types of story.

All in all, not the best, not the worst. It reminds me of sth inbetween "Transmigrating into a Mob Character to Rehabilitate the Villain Plan" and "The Legendary Master's Wife", which are longer series & I liked better.

So do try those out if you liked this novel.

Translations were good, though the latest translation team has more notable errors but is still readable, even I who's half grammar nazi doesn't mind too much. <<less

I think the 'natural law' or something has something to do with it. There's only one lustrous blah blah pill (I forgot what it's called, sorry) which is used by the phoenix. It's either Mu Chen do 'it' with Gu Yunjue or Feng something (the phoenix, sorry my memory is really bad) That's just based on my understanding 'kay? Plus I believe MC also loves his disciple even in his past life, if not, then why didn't he just killed him as soon as he got a second chance at life? We all know that Mu Chen is really a righteous man, he perfectly knows that Gu Yunjue will just bring chaos once he grew up. Then why not just kill him hmm?

[collapse]

Spoiler

Others are also very agitated because Gu Yunjue still practiced devil cultivation even though Mu Chen did his best so that his disciple won't do the same thing as his last life and the two of them won't die. That's actually his only reason why he didn't want Gu Yunjue to practice devil cultivation, so that they won't end up the same as their last life where the two of them had a tragic way of death. For Mu Chen, one's cultivation doesn't tell wether they are good or bad. When they went back to the past, his (Gu Yunjue) spirit soul from the present went back with him to the past. So the power he has on his last life is the same as his power when he got his second life even though his body is of a five year old child. Also, although he practiced devil cultivation, he didn't brought chaos to the world unlike in his past life. We can say that Mu Chen succeeded to change their fate.

[collapse]

I hope I expressed my understanding clearly.

But I really wish that they give a clue on who Jing Ting would end up with. There are clues about other couples! Why does Jing Ting doesn't have one? Hmpp. Pout

Well putting that aside, I love this novel. Nothing can change my mind.

Now I realized that we can't really judge a story if we still haven't read it yet. Don't let others' review influence you. All of us have different perspectives so just go with the flow of the story and enjoy. <<less

Attention! do not be fooled by the first chapters, thinking that super possessive ML can "force" MC, it is nothing like that!

certainly the first chapters can give the impression that ML double-sided black belly is going to eat MC at any moment and everything will be "forced" but no! Building his relationship is solid, slow, and very fluffy! ah!

The first 20-30 chapters can be a little heavy but if you can resist I swear you will find a gem!

This novel is highly recommended if you want something simple, cute... more>> and easy to digest but with a little background plot (it is good to rest from other novels full of intrigue, misunderstanding and heavy stuff) ; honestly the world in which the plot revolves is interesting but not important, the same thing happens with the rest of the characters in the background, they have many interesting things to tell but they are simply left out of the picture because they are not the main point here! ah! the ending is a bit rushed but what you wanted to tell was told (i really need some extra chapters to know if the possible secondary couples got together :'v oh my ships)....

MC tsundere is very adorable and ML devoted wife waiting receiving love really made me fall in love, seeing them only makes me think of the misfortune of being single! ah!

(Percent if what you want is for papapa this is not essential here, you will have a little taste maybe but not more, you will only have flirtation and fluffiness on the way)

If you like possessive / yanders characters, this is possibly your cup of tea... about the story you really don't need to think too much! Take it as something to cleanse the taste and don't wait nothing fancy or super deep, nah! This is just something to relax, the translation has some obvious flaws but nothing that is not understandable with a bit of common logic, just enjoy the interactions of both characters and again, don't think too much! <<less

I really prefer JT over the ML... actually, I prefer anyone but the ML, or no one at all... I really agree with winter-t. I was so tempted to abandon the novel without finishing it especially when it has gotten to point where the MC was r*ped (cause consent is sexy) and was forced to sign a death contract with ML, but since I've started it and was also curious, I have chosen to suffer (this was just an exaggeration but ye) and continue it. This was not the worst novel I've read so I can still bear with it lol. Every time, like every-effin-time the MC, u know, was put into a situation where it seemed like he was willing to sacrifice himself for the ML and when he was asked whether he was willing to die for the ML or something like that, I can't help rolling my eyes like dude, whether he saved you or not, sacrifice himself for u or not for the name of love (I seriously think he got a Stockholm syndrome or maybe the problem also lies from the MC), it doesn't matter, he's going to follow u anyway. And when someone asked the MC (probably the ML) if MC was going to cry if ML died... again, I was like dude, he probably won't have enough time to cry cause he will immediately follow like he got no choice at all, death contract remember??

So, ye, thats it...

I only started reading cultivational novels recently and so far, it is the most informative one about the cultivational world. TDTPMDTD started cute and promising. However....

I am dropping this. Here's why:

    • There is no much substance in this story. I don't know if it's because my standard was influenced by MXTX novels but really, as the novel progresses there's not much to look forward to. Like, there's no big plot brewing. Only mini annoying obstacles.
    • ML is almost always making a fool out of MC in the pretense of love. That is super annoying. The fluffiness of the scene disappears because of the ML's manipulation. Like, Hello, ML! Can you please give your Master a little bit of dignity as your Shizun, please?! MC is not a f*cking toy! ML is a control-freak and that is not sweet nor funny!
    • I do not understand why the MC did not suddenly give another try to save his cousin. I mean, no matter how indifferent you are, it is still your only relative who treated you kindly! That's a major plothole for me.
I have a lot more to say since I am not like reader who suddenly drop novels out of nowhere but I have already forgotten most of the things wanted to say.

I have given it three

because it has been informative and there are some scenes I enjoyed. If only it were shorter, I might have enjoyed it better and not drop it.

I'm torn. This is usually the kind of story I would like (it hits all the right notes; my favorite tropes), but fell short in execution. Namely, I have a problem with the ML.

ML is acts like a clingy, neurotic fangirl. He's always pressuring & pushing the MC's limits; not respecting his Master's boundaries.

I didn't like the MC much either. He's described as having a 'pure white soul'... but he doesn't. He's flawed, and that's okay, but don't try to present him as a holy saint when he's not.

Spoiler

He's rather violent; beating up people on a whim. He's judgmental/shallow about people's physical appearances - remarking on others for being ugly or fat, and disliking them for it. He gets irrationally jealous every time ML even looks at a girl. He treats his family members rather coldly; even the people who are good to him. He hates one of the characters simply for having a loving family. MC treats that person poorly even though the guy was always nice to him.

[collapse]

It was an okay story, but much was left to be desired. The story's pacing was rather slow.

When it comes to the 'Shizun & Demonic Disciple' trope, I prefer SVSSS, although the premise for this story was more interesting. But the two lead characters are not as likeable. <<less

This story has everything I like in a story: a possessive/yandere ML; a hot tempered/unfortunate MC; OP-ness everywhere; and eventually lots of steamy scenes (mostly skipped with some fade-to-black).

Despite this... getting through it was incredibly long and boring.

I put it down and picked up it more times than I care to admit. I know you're not meant to mention the translations in these reviews, but I don't know if it was truly the story that got to me or all the small errors—both grammatical and spelling.

At the very beginning the... more>> story was alright. It moved at a decent pace, until it didn't.

These stories always begin with the ML in childhood, which I am A-OK with! No complaints! My problem is how unnecessary much of it is. So much didn't contribute to either budding the relationship or forwarding the story. As the time skips happened, this way of storytelling didn't let up.

"Why not DNF if you don't like it?" I can hear some distant peruser of reviews ask. Simply, I don't like to DNF, and I had hope that it would get better. I always have hope it will get better.

It didn't. Not to me. The whole thing read as bland and 2D. Which... I'm still gutted about, because very few novels tag all my favourite things! 😢

I'm a firm believer that different people enjoy different things. So, don't let my review put you off. Give the first ten chapters a try. Maybe you will like what I did not. And if you end up feeling the same as me and are fine to DNF, no harm, no foul! <<less

I stopped at ch75. I just couldn't take it anymore. From the beginning until the chapter where I stopped reading, I always felt that the novel was greatly centered on the concept "the strong shall reign and be revered, the weak shall cower and be despised". From the beginning I always felt that the story was cold, brutal and somewhat contradicting. I felt like the characters had no empathy, simply facades which showed warm emotions yet at the core is as chilling as the emptiness of the void.
