Great novel. The Main Character is interesting and the side characters have depth to them. There is no cliche villains that are screaming about face, your weaker than me so I must bully you or you killed my brothers uncle father so die. This is a must read for just about everyone.

Okay, so this novel seems to be a mixture of the 'transferred to another world' and 'modern world apocalypse' genre and is executed fairly decently, at least towards the beginning. Despite some reviews here bashing the story solely because of the MC's 'a**hole-like' attitude, I find it refreshingly unique in that he really doesn't give a sh*t what other people think, unlike other novels, where the MC seems alpha at a glance, but keels surprisingly easily to his harem/subordinates. He was the king/ruler of a powerful country in his old... more>> world, and this attitude was transitioned fairly smoothly to his original world, something most novels that attempt this typically fail in. What I disliked however, was the 'romance', as it felt very forced upon the audience just to appease the viewers who feared he wouldn't have a girlfriend of peerless beauty caliber (spoilers, he does!!!). Honestly, I probably would have given this review 5 stars if it wasn't for that. This is one of the novels I feel would be better off either without romance or if it did have romance, it would have to be something that is focused on being developed throughout the novel, not just thrown in the middle to appease the audience to show our "uber handsome good-looking badass alpha male lead" and his "peerless, divine, super attractive, even hotter than all of Korea's idols and models" girlfriend.
Spoiler

I know that he didn't explicitly consent to the relationship, but it was pretty blatant how obviously the author was forcing it on us and how he kind of just accept the relationship after she kissed him, personally I prefer the military girl who Woo-Jin kind of convinced/threatened to join his guild, I personally felt that relationship could have been much more meaningful than this one but she isn't the peerless beauty that all men covet so whatever...

[collapse]

Next, is something that's a hit and miss, miss personally for me, is the over-glorification of the MC. Most people who read the Isekai novels back then when it was still kind of new, myself included were completely euphoric when we would read about how the MC would be unreasonably overpowered and result in everybody glorifying him through passage after passage of purple prose, that, juxtaposed with the horde of useless, incompetent MC's that were useless and weak, at least gave us a reason that he deserved his harem, and deserved all the bootlicking he received. However, that too became old, because people soon realized that it was just pretty much the same old useless, indecisive MC, just with the extra attribute of strength, and people wanted more and more from the MC, which eventually would give birth the the MC's like Woo-Jin, (who I currently very much enjoy) however, despite the improvements in character, something completely superfluous that persists through all these novels is this complete worship and veneration of the MC and all his actions. Some novels, such as Overlord, despite being the embodiment of everything I said earlier about this MC glorification are actually interesting and executed impressively well due to taking the 'MC worship' culture of light novels, and making it into the central theme and joke of the novel, giving it a refreshingly comedic and ironic feeling. However, some novels like Magi's Grandson and Death March outright start sucking the MC's dick, although Everyone Else is a Returnee, another Korean novel with elements and themes very similar to this, is getting there. However, as I'm starting to digress, I'll get back to what my opinions of dick-riding the MC in this novel are. It was kept astonishingly tame towards the beginning, despite having a very flamboyant MC, however it started to progress and two parts that really started to push it for me were when
Spoiler

Woo-Jin goes to North Korea and started pushing the great leader around and the great leader taking it up his ass because he's actually a closet fanboy of Woo-Jin, trying to get his autograph and handshake, pics, whatever. This part, despite reeking of nationalistic pride, was still amazingly moderate, even despite the fact that Woo-Jin plundered the great leader's entire treasury of legendary artifacts. The part that really felt like was starting to push it was when Melody literally started kissing his feet in front of live television and reporters so the world could be exposed to his greatness. Yes I know why she did it, but it didn't mean it had to be done in a way so the world would want his d*ck in their ass.

[collapse]
Those were just two instances that I felt were noteworthy of calling out although it isn't like there weren't any more. Although the MC dickride is still moderately tame, I'm expect it to start increasing in scale, which is why I brought it up. Anyways, apart from the "romance" and this 'MC-dicksucking', the novel is fairly decent, go try it out. <<less

3 starts - the ok mark.

This novel is ok with wobbly balance just before falling to either poor (2) or good (4).

MC is very unlikable, he's a selfish a**hole, indifferent toward human's life. A tyrant (especially seen later on, when he interacts with xxx). I think his personality is one of the worst we see around lately. He doesnt act like a spellcaster should, no intellectual approach, just brute strikes.

... more>> The "system" is also lazy and bland. Meh taste.

The only pro I can think of, but quite decent one is that the setting is pretty unused yet, and despite his terrible manners, Woojin at least explained his "don't give a f*ck" policy in recent chapters with surprising reasonable way. <<less

I give this story 5 stars up to chapter 90. Then the author makes a s*upid bad guy and he won't die. The MC never meets his family or girlfriend anymore. The story is full of fun stuff after ch90. Chapter 90-150ish is a 3 star. Then the story just kills itself. Everything is random and bs. The author steals stuff from the matrix and other movies/novels/ games. This guy is a hardcore matrix fan. I would rate chapter 150 on up a -1 at least. I hate that his... more>> girlfriend never gets screen time. Its like what Coiling Dragon sc. <<less

What kills the story for me is the creepy political sub-text.

In reality, even though the TV news is constantly bleating about terrorists being a big problem, statistically they are an insignificant risk, in addition to actually being obvious patsies, but in this novel terrorists are the the #1 concern of Americans - way more critical to their personal lives than their jobs and welfare!

Furthermore, in this novel it seems like the Middle East has real mean terrorists that the government is fighting FOR REALZ. Luckily they have the MC's help... more>> to go mu*der them all in blood-soaked revenge! 911 Mission Accomplished!!!

Oh, and also, even though the MC smartly states and repeatedly shows that he trusts NO ONE, he makes a huge exception of the entire South Korean military, to whom he proudly and unhesitatingly not only gives his blood but also all his secrets. In this bizarro world, they are seemingly known for being deeply trustworthy and free of corruption (LOL).

So as much as you might enjoy his smarts and independence, as endlessly highlighted by various points in the story, when it comes back to the corrupt status quo and mainstream thinking, the MC is completely subservient.

Similarly, the MC's interactions with North Korea felt like I was watching the Mainstream News's fantasies, except in my web fantasy, which I actually read to escape this ugly society of lies. ---

Frankly, I prefer it when the intelligence officers (what a misnomer) craft their manipulative psy-ops using stories that are a little bit more detached from our political reality. I don't like how much the author takes his readers for morons. His manipulations are just too crass and obvious.

---

The rest of the story is OK, but not nearly good enough to offset the deeper problems. <<less

The description is very misleading. It sounds like a s*upid evil power trip, it is not. Also, the cover image is a lie as well.

Rather, RPG like dungeons appeared on earth, while a bunch of people started developing RPG like power. When the dungeons appeared MC was inside one, so he got dimensionally displaced and appeared in another world, where such things are common, and he is also one (of many) with such powers

Spoiler

the dungeons appear on earth to pump mana into it to make it possible to invade it via the dungeons

[collapse]

MC returns to earth (which resets his level, but not his knowledge, giving him abnormally fast growth, also you pick a class at level 10. So MC ends up as a gestalt character with 2 classes). And he is not coming back to ravage earth, rather he seems mostly concerned about protecting the earth from external invasion <<less

A story with a fantastic opening but near the 100th chapter, it started going downhill with all sorts of complications. And all the things that had me hooked in the beginning started going haywire.

I thought the writer handled the emotional line really well at first (with his mother and sister, something unique from other transmigrated/op MC books), but towards the middle the MC goes cold fish emotionally. At a point, the contradicting softness towards his loved ones was gone and it was all kill kill kill, he lost his wit... more>> and became a low IQ caveman character. The funny, witty nature with a hint of well veiled darkness turns to dark-black humor that's not funny most of the time.

The straight-forward immersive storyline turned so complicated that I had to drink medicine for the headache it gave me. Nothing made sense when it came to the dungeons. Then the dialogues and plotline made no sense at all after 100 chapters. Towards the end it was like the writer joined a cult and was trying to push the ideals of insulting the government, stable society, religion, the judicial system and every semblance of organised society. You name it, it tried to hit them all down. And worse, it did it without proper knowledge of how it all works.

Another point, somehow dangerous dungeons that monsters could flood out of are around the world and the government lets people live close to them? There is no militarized zone around these danger areas, just cheap housing, this makes no sense.

Various countries later start nuking these dungeons when it gets out of hand, why wasn't this done at the start?

Alphen is a world of magic, this MC has related with the "gods" but was unable to go against the enemy with all that power, what makes him think he can succeed now when earth and himself are far weaker?

He came back for his family but his sister is getting sicker and taken over by another entity but he doesn't care, how is this rational?

He is supposed to have lost his stats and powering up again but somehow he is going to other worlds and taking out colonies (colonies normally ought to start after 7 star to 9 star dungeon invasion but our MC at 8 star is taking them out, no sweat). Is everyone in this world a noodle?

There seems to be no single intelligent person on Earth or around him who can stop this caveman, atheist, anti-government MC.

If you enjoy endless hack-'em-to-death scenes with no rational, go for it!

5 stars on first 75 chapters

1 stars on next 50 chapters

0 stars on the next 50 chapters <<less

It is somewhat interesting to see a necromancer because no fiction novels I know deal with main characters with magic/sorcery well not even top sellers. So far the novel is kinda bad with dungeons that monsters only spawn there, guilds and bureaucracy. Also the magic is not really explained and is badly constructed, he can summon human skeleton mages from bunny corpses for example.

The novel feels like a diablo fanfic that the author has not planned at all and just writes for money.

This is my first review for a novel so I hope I can provide a good guide for the reader who is trying to decide if this is worth reading or not.

I am a very picky reader, I have certain requirements that I look for when selecting a novel to read. I was looking through all the list in novelupdates to pick something to read and it took me 4 hours to decide to read this novel. Just for reference I have finished reading Versatile Mage, Everyone Else is a... more>> Returnee, Infinite Competitive Dungeon Society, I reincarnated for Nothing, Magika no Kenshi, Solo Leveling, The Book Eating Magician, Release that Witch to name a few. So from this list you can understand if I as a reviewer is worthy enough to pass a decent judgement and review of this novel.

So this novel series is in a few words enjoyable and disappointing at the same time.

The MC of the series is someone well designed and almost perfectly executed. He is cold, arrogant, ruthless and caring towards his people and familiars. This followed 80% of the story but towards the end I feel like he softened up too much which caused him issues. He is not smart, he is just too strong through which he can enforce his will and what he wants to do. Some people might not like his character but I personally do and I think the reason why he is ruthless and cold is justified. Though towards the end it felt the character deviated and turned to something different.

The supporting cast was somewhat lackluster, the author really didn't focus on them that much and they just looked like lackeys that will do whatever their leaders tell them to do. Due to this it often felt like the story lacked life and spark to make it more immersive and diverse. I wish the author gave more "character" or "traits" to the supporting cast and included a bit more romance in it. Maybe he could extend a few more extra chapters towards the end and tell a bit more story of their life after the main event ended.

The plot is similar to Everyone Else is a Returnee and Solo Leveling (These two stories were better defined), with a twist of Matrix towards the end.

It was kind of linear plot where the MC gets strong by leveling up and he has his familiars and they are op and kill the evil invaders, just towards the end the author tried to make it a bit more different but it was too cliched, rushed and pointless. I was really into it at first, believe it or not I was reading like a madman, read 208 chapters in 3 days. It was good, it got me hooked but towards the middle it felt more like an obligation to finish rather than enjoying it. I think after 100 chapters or so the author was trying to incorporate a lot of things but it became a hot mess, it was lacking a lot and didn't mesh well (it wasn't peanut butter and jelly). The fights were good nothing special but at times it just felt repetitive and boring.

There are lot of things I want to write about but this review is already too big and I hate reading long reviews so I will just end it here. But overall do I think it is worth reading? Well if you don't have anything else on your reading list and you liked EEIAR and Solo Leveling you can give it a try. But don't force yourself to read it (it is not a must read), it will be disappointing by the time you finish it. <<less

Stopped reading around ch 140 due to the sheer s*upidity the story turns into.

Magic system makes literally no sense at all. Example being MC's lich commenting on how songhoon has more "magical sense and talent" than the MC. Excuse me, what? Last I checked the entire f*cking story revolved around learning from skillbooks. Seems like the author scratched that mid story and decided to start giving characters random insane powers out of f*cking nowhere flying around and throwing sonic booms without the need of those books.

MC turns into a deranged... more>> psychopath post ch100, which is incredibly jarring. He's not exactly portrayed as the most merciful person throughout the story but he went from "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" aka his "motto" to slaughtering whole innocent villages literally on their knees begging for their lives. Personality twist was... a bit much.

Side characters feel... uhh... redundant? Dude's got an entire army of skeletons... not like he needs some flesh bags following him around. Romance female lead leads to literally nowhere. What is even the point of having side characters when every situation MC shows up and solves it himself. It feels like the characters are only padding to glorify how great the MC is.

Last but not least, what is it with Korean litRPGs all copying the same plotline? I feel like I've read this novel twice already. It's exactly the same as "Solo leveling" and "I never run out of mana". It can't be that hard to come up with an original plotline. I could probably name a dozen other novels similar to this too. <<less

The underlying story has an interesting premise. There are elements of the world such as dirty politics that feel particularly realistic, and the mechanics of the world feel nicely fleshed out.

The Romantic interest in this novel also seems to be the best fleshed out character - I honestly feel that if the novel was taking a different path, she could have been fixing the issues I felt with this story - though I am not saying the lack of core romance is an issue in and of itself.

The trouble is...

The... more>> Main Character was supposed to be in 3rd year of High School - nearly an adult - and have spent 20 years in another world wishing to get back to his family.

The Main Character acts like a 3 year old with 0 life experience who can't do anything but act up and makes no real effort to be with his family.

He's a Necromancer who was supposedly a Necromancer for 20 years, yet immediately acts like a mindless warrior right off the bat and treats that as if it was the only natural way for him.

He makes a mistake once, but is saved from it - but when he goes to do the same thing again later? Same mistake! Moral of the story? There's no point in learning or improving, just rely solely on levels!

I like how he is merciless, however he is useless, barely getting by on using thick plot armor while being OP. It's like mixing the personality of Plankton and the intellect of Patrick Star with the Infinity Gauntlet.

Lastly, everyone in this world basically feels like scum; "After pretty girl lost her prettiness in an accident, she lost all her friends, but when she got pretty again, everyone loves her!". Honestly, Kim-Jongun is one of the more likable characters in the story - and it's not like they're painting him in an especially good light. <<less

This one's pretty easy to rate, even though it's inconsistent.

Important warning: The novel pretty much changes genre at some point, becoming yet another example of an author doing a 'not what I signed up for' change and potentially disappointing readers after they've read 3/4 of the novel.

Spoiler

Story changes from modern/fantasy to future sci-fi/VR

[collapse]

The Good:

  • The story is somewhat interesting, and had an interesting mix of hold to draw you in and events to keep you guessing.
The BAD:

  • MC is a huge huge tool.
  • All characters are shallow.
  • Forced plotting is forced. Everyone is crazy s*upid to help make it easy.
  • Very unsatisfactory ending with so many unresolved things. La easy 50 chapters are pretty much just the writer wrapping up homework, resigned to get a 65 because shooting for more is to much trouble.
The Different:

  • The story twists in a s*upid way. Some like it. Most don't.
Overall the story had good potential till about the halfway mark- then it's just a downhill slide from there...

First novel I dropped so close to its ending. I think that says a lot considering I've been reading novels for 5 years now.

The most disappointing novel so far. Great at the beginning, bit it just started going downhill from chapter 100 or so. It got so bad towards the end that I simply don't think it's worth it to read the last five chapters. I'm notrying even curious, which never happened to me. Overall, you're in to a huge frustration. This had a lot if potential. Oh well

there are a few reasons that I don't like SSN, but maybe that's because this kinda of novel wasn't my cup of tea. To be honest I actually kinda liked how the main character acted, he was a major A-hole who didn't mind killing people who pissed him off but that's how I expected him to be... He is a necromancer, you probably are more useful to him dead than allive

Here are things that I didn't like and if you don't mind them by all means go ahead and read... more>> the novel you might actually enjoy it.

  • This novel is not really about necromancy,
yes the main character is a "necromancer" but don't expect things like "ah that was a powerful monster lets make a minnion out of it", the part where he was collecting minnions was already over before the main story began and except for a few points in story he is more of a "summoner" than a necromancer. Also no mixing bones and making abominations....

Well this was a Turn off for me since I was looking forward to the necromancy part, and he gets a melee dual class which kinda ruined it for me.

  • MC being called a messiah by western reporters
he summons an army of undead and destroys slaughters a camp of terrorists, and then they start calling him a messiah.... seriously this (for me) was s*upid on so many levels that I almost gave up reading the rest of the novel

  • Zero Development for side characters
Well I don't think I need to explain much about this point... well honestly speaking its not like they get enough of it in most web novels

  • The ending feels rushed

The story is amazing it moves fast and doesn't spend too much time repeating it self. As for all the bad reviews about the main character's personality, for some reason some people seem to like your generic MC who is conflicted about killing or doing anything wrong. Sometimes that is good but not all stories should have that specially not the ones targeting a mature audience.

If you want your mainstream protagonist who never kills anyone or does anything bad or rude then read something from the shonen genre of books... more>> not seinen/mature <<less

--- NEW REVIEW:

The MC's won back some of my respect. This series gets bumped up to 4 for the time being.

Spoiler

He's revealed his intention to pay back the decent guy he extorted, showing he's not a complete a**hole, but it's still up in the air whether he'll pull something like this again in the future.

[collapse]

--- OLD REVIEW

3.5

Pretty interesting and enjoyable. I like the MC too, to an extent, but the MC loses points for being so selfish that he feels the need to juice people for benefits when he doesn't really need tem. I hope it doesn't become a regular part of the plot.

Mild spoiler:
Spoiler

He can save this guy's life but instead he makes the guy pay him money. What's the point? It's no skin off his back, and the guy was a good guy who was trying to give him and the rest of their team good advice so that they could help each other and nobody would die. So what was the point in extorting him? And he event went so far as taking advantage of a misunderstanding and asking for this guy's $40k despite how this guy -- who's done him no wrong -- will have to derail his life financially to scr*pe together the money. Wasn't it enough to already take ALL the bloodstones from the mission, including the stuff that guy killed while trying to teach/protect them? I don't care what world the MC came from or what he had to do there, an as*hole is an a**hole. So the MC loses major respect from me for being an a**hole. I know it was just a set-up to make this guy his manager, but there are a 1001 better ways that don't require the MC to be a selfish douche who won't lift a finger to help a friendly ally without getting benefits.

[collapse]

Other than that pet peeve, the story is great and I look forward to the MC's growth and adventures. I just hope he doesn't screw over more likeable characters because my rating of this series will just continue to drop.

I don't get how anyone praise this kind of protagonist. He's not some sort of "Dark Hero" or "Anti-hero", he's basically a villain and a bully who kills people left and right just because he can. The author tried to humanize him by giving him a love interest and family to protect, but it failed. Just because villains have family or loved ones, it doesn't suddenly make them good guys!

PS: This novel is chock-full of racism, ignorance, and politics.
