My Husband With Scholar Syndrome

Mu Xiaoya lived for twenty-six years before she knew that she had a sudden genetic disease. There was no medicine for it, and there was only death waiting for her.

Before she died, many people came to see her, but she was most impressed by Bai Chuan.

Bai Chuan was her neighbor, an autistic child with scholar’s syndrome. At that time, his face full of scars was desperate: “I – I studied all your medical records, but I have no way to save you.”

Mu Xiaoya was stunned: “You are a doctor?”

Bai Chuan: “I am not… …”

Mu Xiaoya’s disease was a genetic disease. Unless the gene was changed, there was no possibility of cure. However, Bai Chuan was the only person who tried to cure her after she fell ill.

Mu Xiaoya: “Why are you going to cure me?”

Bai Chuan: “I want to marry you.”

Mu Xiaoya laughed: “If you marry me, you will soon become a widower.”

Bai Chuan insisted: “I – I want to marry you.”

Bai Chuan, who has cognitive impairments, can’t express his meaning very well, and can only repeat it over and over again.

Later, Mu Xiaoya still died. When she woke up, she returned to the summer of her college graduation.

Bai Chuan: “I… I want to marry you.”

Mu Xiaoya: “Good.”

The starlight in the eyes of Bai Chuan was the most beautiful scenery that Mu Xiaoya had ever seen in her life.

As someone with a Psychology degree and someone who had read the first review that shows up on this page giving the title 2 stars for the inaccuracies of the diagnosis, presentation, and management of the MLs condition, I knew to not expect an ounce of accuracy.

Thankfully, this is normally never a problem with me because I don't expect realistic representations in fiction, and this is also the reason why I was able to enjoy the novel.

While, yes, the ML's psychological condition as well as the FL's physical condition were... more>> less than brilliantly wrapped up — which is a con I will admit.

The pro is everything else.

  1. Supportive family and friends
  2. A respectful relationship
  3. No red flags
  4. No third parties
  5. No major angst
  6. Just... warm love.
For those that were like me and wondered if the FL was able to be saved in her second life, here is the answer:

Spoiler

Yes, she was. The ML's grandmother gave her a family heirloom, which was a jade bracelet, and this jade bracelet (which is a sort of ore) put out radiation to the FL, which mutated some of her problematic genes (which was the cause of the disease) and this disabled the final part of the disease which normally leads to death, organ failure. So she survived. Till when? It can't be said but isn't that how life is? Full of uncertainity and hope?

[collapse]

Anyways, so yes, the ending is:
Spoiler

Happy.

[collapse]

Finally, I enjoyed it. I read it within a day and wouldn't mind reading any other work from the author if presented. They write well.

A heart-warming story. Overall rating: 4.6.

The plot is about a rebirthed woman who marries her autistic childhood friend, and how she tries to 'treat' her husband's autism by slowly incorporating him into the modern-world society.

It's well-written - you can feel the simplicity of the world in an autistic person's view, the happiness, wariness and exhaustion of the autistic's relatives, and the struggles and worries of an autistic's wife.

I don't know much about the medical knowledge in this story, but if those were 100% true, then the story brought us to... more>> real-life scenarios of a family with these circumstances. At the very least, this story let me sympathize with them.

The translation quality also managed to retain the feelings of each chapter - kudos to you guys.

A great story, very warm and simple - a refreshing read, especially after reading those stories with webbed conflicts and evil, contradictory characters. RECOMMENDED. <<less

I don't like the way how autism is shown in this novel. Autism is not something you can "cure" with love and rainbows but it's something to accept and to acclimate.
Apparently, the author couldn't bother to have any real research about the disorder. And the whole premise of this book is offensive to people on the spectrum and to people who are neurodivergent. And many people give this garbage 5 stars because it has fluff in it.
Also, there was a lost infant ML theme going on which creeped... more>> me out since FL does "things" in the name of "curing" him. I honestly got curious about which ways the author can fetishize the situation and skimmed some more of it after dropping the story. I'll admit it was a great loss of my time.
Translators site had major problems, the chapters were missing so I had to read it from another site.
Dropped at chapter 25. <<less

A reason why I specifically created an account only to give a review for this novel is that while the story is quite good it's honestly creating a stereotype which shows autism = antisocial disorder which is clearly not true.

I'll repeat the novel is good but autism is not something you can cure but accept and acclimate and I don't like the way how autism is being shown in this situation. I don't plan on giving a concrete review since I'm just a fun reader I just felt I needed... more>> to address the fact that Authors need to research a bit more about psychological conditions before using them in their stories and not categorize all disorders as a part of autism <<less

Everything about this story is wonderful: fully realized characters, realistic portrayal of autism, fluff, and GOOD COMMUNICATION. The outstanding point of this novel is its characters. MC is realistically mature: she is assertive, listens and communicates effectively, and productively focuses on her priorities. The ML is such a huge sweetie who always does his best to become better. All the rest of the side characters are similarly supportive and value the ML (although ML's brother is undoubtedly the best).

Also appreciate that the conflict in the story comes from the medical... more>> conditions of the MC and ML, rather than s*upid misunderstandings and petty rivalries (which is all too common in second-chance novels).

Unlike the majority of shoujo and cnovels, the author is very clear that the concept of loving and making someone your entire world, while romantic, is in actuality very unhealthy and prone to tragedy. Therefore, if you truly loved someone, you will do your best to expand their lives and let them live well. A beautiful moral found in too few romantic stories. <<less

A Must Read!

Its a very heartwarming story that enables other people to see beyond of what they see. Overcoming all the problems they'd have to face not only as a married couple but also dealing with the difficulties of having an autistic husband or having a wife with genetic disease.

Its very eye opening for a lot of people who doesnt know much about both issues. The care and love shown by both families despite the issues looming over their heads. How they cope, how they move on and go forward... more>> despite it all.

The novel is pack of emotions. From sadness of death, occasional funny lines (and alot of it came from ML ???), from panic and anxiety when ML is having trouble, from the happiness of the parents seeing their children lives get better, from the fulfilling feeling of accomplishments of the charaters, from the helplessness knowing what they lack or knowing the possibilities of them losing each other.

I find it interesting when the story is about or related with someone with disability. This is my first time reading with autism and I liked it. The story is very nice.

I kinda feel it as a light story; no dramas just the normal everyday life of people. It also opens up about the what ifs of having autism in the family and as a lover.

I super like the family and everyone around who respect and being patient with him. So much respect with his older brother for his unconditional... more>> love to him.

It is kind of feel good novel. Really worth it to try.

Btw, this is my first ever comment! Haha

Happy reading everyone <<less

It’s a simple, low stress heartwarming story about a girl who gets to relive the last four years of her life and decides to do what makes her happiness, thus finding her best end at the same time.

The ML is a precious and genius savant cinnamon roll who will make you love him even as he breaks your heart with his innocence and devotion. The FL is a sensible and kindhearted, easygoing girl. There are no jealous love interests or meddling side characters, just wholesome family antics and fluff everywhere... more>> ahhhh...

Be warned though, it’s got the kind of gentle, aching melancholy moments that just stab you through the heart at the most unexpected of moments... prepare tissues for the sneak attack of feels! <<less

Lots of people don't like the book's portrayal of autism, but if there's one thing that I think is misrepresented, I think it's how the author shows that love can help someone deal with it.

I don't think it's fair for the readers and translators to criticize the book because of the words the author uses to describe autism.

1 - things sound differently in different languages, so sometimes a straight translation doesn't capture the nuances. For example, I'm always startled that the word for patients is literally "sick person" in Mandarin,... more>> even if the person isn't technically "sick". How this gets translated to English heavily affects the connotation and feeling around what is being said, but both phrases are technically correct. However, if it gets translated to "sick person" instead of "patient", there's a perceived judgment on the person's health that is unintended in the original language.

2 - many people are offended by how the author says they "treated" or "cured" the ml's "illness". While the word choices are not great (and might be a factor of this being translated from another language), this is written more from a bystander's perspective, not from someone with autism's perspective. To me (having been around and lived with children and adults with autism), characteristics of some people with autism like violence and lack of physical coordination are not ones that I'd want someone to live with for the rest of their lives. While some people are offended by the idea of "treating" autism, there are things that a person can do to help their coordination, and things that the carer can do to minimize chances of violence. I don't care what you call these things, but it's better to try introducing them regardless of what guise they come under, because of the improvement in living standards they could introduce for the person.

These things said, I think it's great that the author shows some of the grittier symptoms of someone with autism. The lack of communication, sudden busts of violence due to frustration, the ocd in daily tasks. I do agree with one of the comments that say this seems like symptoms for someone on the more severe side of the autism spectrum. For most with these types of symptoms, holding a job would be unrealistic, but I guess this author has portrayed him as someone from a wealthy family who has had a custom position made for him.

The most unrealistic part of this story, which the author admitted in one of the translated notes, is that the symptoms are "cured" by love. Love is not going to change anything for an autistic person. Maybe the patience and persistence someone has because of love will help them stick around and try to help the autistic person learn to work around their symptoms, but love itself is not the key. It's also not magically easier just because of love. From what I've seen, someone needs to be constantly thinking of ways to help the person better grow. They'll also constantly be analyzing to death minor improvements and outbursts (trying to find a pattern to encourage the former and avoid the latter).

While this story might be more realistic about some of the symptoms of autism, I liked the dynamics in "I just want to be in a relationship" better. It felt less like everyone was babying the ML and the relationship wasn't so full of pity (and awe at how handsome the ML was). I actually had to stop because of this. <<less

*Not Medically Accurate.

However, very VERY romantic and sweet. If you're looking for tooth aches and a melted heart then this novel is for you!

Whilst I wouldn't recommend anyone use the ML as a poster child for Autism, those around him have one quality that really made this novel shine. Patience.

Patience, Understanding and so much love for the ML. As much as they can give despite the stigma that people with disabilities have in CN. There is very little the Bai family wouldn't do for Bai Chuan and that made me... more>> want to cry.

Read this for the romance and the familial love. Don't read it if you legitimately wish to know more about the Autism Spectrum and those with Autism. <<less

I only read up to chapter 39, and rage quit. I don't know if it got better, but here is why:

Although this fictional representation of autism is obviously dramaticed, I am disappointed with the way the protagonist sees the male lead as a burden.

The book has shown in various occasions that the ML can understand what happens around him, can develop flexibility in his habits/schedule/etc.

... more>> With sufficient conditioning [helping him create healthier habits, such as informing immediately when uncomfortable about something] they could lead a successful and happy life.

(maybe it's just me, but besides the incident when both parents met, he did nothing that should be a deal breaker, especially when she chose to be with him knowing he was autistic)

So... 2 stars docked for turning this fluffy romance into a wishy-washy female's pov about her marriage out of pity. <<less

Wow, such a heartwarming novel. MC and ML are childhood friend turn into childhood sweetheart who are missed being together in MC's previous life because MC choose to study abroad rather than accept ML's proposal. When she meet ML again, she's already in her deathbed while ML is trying desperately to save her. Then she's gone after seeing ML's dedication for her. She's back in time when ML propose to her and this time MC accepts him.

I love how MC helps to broaden ML's world and ML also works hard... more>> to be better because he wants to be worthy of MC. It's not easy and they're going through many ups and downs together, become more solid in each process.

Spoiler

The most heartbreaking moment for me:

    1. When MC's cousin is dead because of the same genetic disease as MC.
    1. (In alternate ending version) ML waits for MC in airport after MC returns from abroad only to find that MC loses consciousness as soon as she steps out from airport. Then ML desperately tries to save her life in vain. After MC's death, ML is trapped in his own world and never speak again.
[collapse]

Spoiler

Fortunately in this current life, MC isn't dead. Although she's not fully cured, the jade bracelet from grandma Bai help her getting better. She and ML have a son together whose face is like ML but with MC's personality.

One of the best Chinese novels I've ever read, and I can say I've read more than 100 plus. There is no random face slapping shiz. Great story. I thought it was the typical love drama where the ML was bullied due to his syndrome rather it was focused on MC and ML after marriage relationship. It exceeded my expectations. And The author did her research.

The story is well rounded and written very well. The author shows the reality of being with a syndrome, that it is not simple as it seems. There are ups and downs. The story is focused on the challenges that MC and ML face after their wedding. I also love both... more>> the MC and ML.

FL wearing grandma’s jade that can cause gene mutation and saving her life by making her disease not so severe.

[collapse]

The illogical parts made me dislike it. But I still found certain parts of the story to be enjoyable. I also liked the fact that the author didn’t magically made the FL the cure to ML’s autism. Sure he got better at dealing with his overstimulation and social skills but he wasn’t “cured” like many chinese novels. I dislike those “cured” ML cause neurodivergence does not work that way!! So in this novel I do appreciate that even if I cringe at some of the FL’s and families thoughts about the ML.

Still a good read to pass the time. <<less
