Spirit Realm

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Thirty thousand years ago, the Heaven Fighting Race who called themselves “Gods” invaded Spirit Realm. Hundreds of races rose up in resistance, but ultimately suffered a crushing defeat. The human race was the first to concede, and the rest of the Hundred Races soon followed in succession.

During the subsequent ten thousand years, all of the races were ens*aved by the Heaven Fighting Race. They were cruelly treated, and lived beneath the shadow of terror.

The Heaven Fighting Race’s march of conquest did not stop there. With Spirit Realm as the starting point, they invaded other secret dimensions, and spread war to all corners of existence. After greatly exhausting their combat strength, they were finally defeated by the Hundred Races who took advantage of this opportunity. With no other choice, they fled to the starry skies outside the realm.

Thirty thousand years later, in an era where the Heaven Fighting Race has already faded to become ancient legend, an amnesiac youth possessing the Heaven Fighting Race’s bloodline is being fostered in an insignificant household. Whilst struggling to live on, he silently awaits the day of the bloodline’s awakening.

This started out interesting, but went pretty bad afterwards. It somehow manages to remain readable though. Which is a big surprise considering who the author is and how awful his other works are.

Everyone is extreme s*upid here, the MC personality is inconsistent, the author keeps on forgetting stuff and changing his mind. (He goes into an infodump-rant about how thunder and lightning are two separate distinct elements, where lightning is the electrons flowing from the cloud and thunder is the sonic air vibrations caused by it that act like an... more>> explosion. Then 2 chapters later they are one element again).

Unlike the author's other works where the MC is a remorseless villain, here he is aiming for a hero. So of course he (and literally everyone else actually) is a psycho killer. That being said, despite being psycho killers, MC and people of allied factions (he has many of those) are somewhat decent human beings overall, this is quite exceptional in xianxia (ex, some rich kids are about to be killed by monsters, MC comes, they run away and abandon him. Realize he hasn't immediately died and decide to come back to help him), or this one clan diligently takes care of the MC and keeps all their promises to his dead father even when they think of him as a worthless cripple, and they don't bully the infirm and actually treat them well.

Of course that gets all those "nice" (relatively) factions abused and taken advantage of constantly so that you feel pity for them but also so the MC can save them. Enemy clans or factions are of course filled with nothing but insanely s*upidly evil people, every single one of those is a rapist, a ret*rd, a monster, a bully, and moustache twirling villain. As bad as it sounds, it actually is the best thing about this story and what sets up miles above the author's other works!

The author's other works have the MC be Chaotic-s*upid-Evil rapist lolrandumb. Here the MC is supposed to be a hero, which means they are not detestable, and their bouts of s*upidity are far less painful. It is far easier to forgive s*upidity when it takes the form of an idealistic hero than it is in a character the author claims is a "cunning villain MC" who is actually a moron.

It honestly reads almost like shonen (think comics aimed at teenage boys). Not clever, but not awful, now have your "Freedom, Justice, and the American Chinese way". It is cheesy and maybe childish, but vastly superior to the alternative and the author's other works

Example 1: the soul devouring monster is breaking to tier 4, if it succeeds it will exterminate our clans! Things are not looking good for the extermination team which means we are all going to die probably. The fighters from 3 normal clans try to rush to sacrifice themselves for aid. Villain clan though? Instead of plotting how to escape with their lives or help kill the beast to save their family, they plot treachery against the entire group so they can assassinate the MC, the tier 1 nobody who admittedly has talent but is far from actualizing it, at this crucial point in time. So what if it dooms our entire clans to extermination from the soul devouring monster!

Example 2: evil mcbadguy hates some people from the MC's faction for daring to defend themselves when evil mcbadguy clan tried to kill all witnesses to the discovery of a rich mine. They are both subordinates of another faction and are told to work together. Being a cunning person who plots well (informed ability) they go "the supervisors are out of our immediate sight (they are not, they are looking with their superior divine sense from miles away), let's mu*der them all in front of a bunch of witnesses" (other subordinate clans who have no reason to cover up for them). This is not a plot, nor is it cunning. It is just s*upidly and openly mu*dering in front of witnesses. Which the author falsely informs us is a plot by a cunning person.

MC of course is OP. And there is this entire "MC is the messiah" thing as well as tons of filler. Where you would have paragraph after paragraph of people dissing the MC, then being shocked by him and praising him. And the MC keeps on saving the day in improbable ways that smack of plot armor. (Breakthrough just when he needs to which somehow lets him easily kill a monster at least 2 full realms above him because his cultivation method is specifically that of holy lightning that gives him a type advantage against Evil magics) <<less

Nope. I just can't. Gave it a try but it's just your typical xianxia. Usual tropes with mediocre excecution. Side characters though get more screen time, are still 1D. Apparently, almost everybody in the world likes to either praise or disdain the MC.
Spoiler

what killed it for me was when they had the last fight with the soul devouring beast and the appariton came out of gao yu and everybody else started dissing the MC. Like wadafaq. You're potentially dying here and you still have the mentality to show disdain. If it was a one time thing, I could've let it go but its recurring soo yeah.

[collapse]

The cultivation is quite well off. Very clear and detailed inscription methods as well. All in all 3/5 (ignore the stars. I pressed wrongly, hehe) for a generic xianxia. If you can get by the forced parts then its readable I guess. Its good points just barely balances off its bad points providing the reader a paltry read suitable for those with nothing on thwir reading list. <<less

I kind of regret investing so much time into this novel.

As expected from Ni Cang Tian, it was really good and got me hooked for a while but the last 200 chapters or so... Honestly ruined the whole thing for me.

The ending is super super super rushed, a lot of it doesn't make sense, many people who were build up to be the 'main cast' type are completely forgotten halfway through, a lot of the badass sh*t the MC did earlier on is invalidated, and he basically turns into a... more>> completely different and unfamiliar person. To be honest it's kind of like the real MC died and someone else replaces him. Also, most of the super cool unique powers that defines the MC earlier on become useless and irrelevant.

Spoiler

Basically, it turns out MC is actually some reborn super expert and after he recovers his memory he's basically someone else. The real Qin Lie actually did die 300 years ago and this other expert purposefully took his body for the bloodline. After that he regains his millenias worth of memories so he's basically an entirely different person even though he wants to keep his prior relationships with friends/family. (but of course that can only be on a surface level considering he's actually as old as the universe itself)

The entire novel is actually just a tiny tiny portion of a enormous plot/scheme war between two super beings and the 'MC' we thought we were watching never actually existed.

[collapse]

In the latter half, 'powers' and 'abilities' also get shoved in like they're mass produced. "Eight profound whatevers!" what is it? what's it look like? no one knows, you just have to know it's some super powerful ability that's the accumulation of knowledge of an entire realm, but it's only mentioned once and all you know is the name. Repeat 3 times per chapter. In stark contrast to the detailed explanations of the cultivation and power systems/inner workings in the first 700 chapters or so.

Sooooo yeah, worst ending I've ever read. Ever.

Before that, pretty good.

Additional rant:

Spoiler

Certain characters are built up so you expect them to be protected by plot armor until the end, except 2 suddenly die right in front of MC with no warning whatsoever. As expected, MC is utterly enraged, and knowing Ni Cang Tian you of course expect some bloody revenge. But guess what? all that build up for nothing, no revenge, nothing. The guy that kills them even becomes a semi-ally in the end. two of MC's close friends that were supporting him for a large part of the novel are forgotten just like that. Poof.

Did I mention the guy who killed them is a complete two-faced as*hole who tried to kill MC multiple times while blatantly denying it and pretending to be all enigmatic and shit? Then kills the two in a hissy fit like some toddler. One of the most dislike-able characters in the whole book IMO. Then everyone just forgets about it like it wasn't a big deal.

Also, he nearly kills Yushi, which usually throws MC into a blazing rage, but this time for no specific reason he just endures it and forgets it later on... And this is before he 'recovers' his millenium of memories, which supports my theory that the author just rushed it and threw character and plot to the f*cking winds.

Good world building, interesting story, but when you get things really complicated like it was here, you truly want to meet all ends in the end... and when it doesn't happen, it feels really really frustrating. Ending felt rushed as hell as well, I felt like the story could've lasted at least 400-500 more chapters without even needing to go too in depth beyond the described world... oh well, rated 4 coz among the myriads of novels i've read this one is clearly not on the lower spectrum of quality.

Spoiler

Bloodlines... unless I've skipped by accident, I'm not sure how he actually resolved his competing bloodlines without tree of life. The whole bloodline system feels so... unpolished. He never even got the 5 bloodlines from his families...

His mother - never introduced

His promise to Enos and her father, and, in general, the future of the races related to his bloodline. There was too big of an emphasis on this so... it feels very sour to not see an actual ending in this field: no children or anything in this regard...

Some characters for some reason becoming forgotten/irrelevant... the ice phoenix, this dude with ogre rings, the guy who carried Indigo to the spirit realm

The whole artifact forging, soo big emphasis on it at the start, all these mysterious symbols and diagrams, I'd expect him to at least craft something on his own, I dunno...

Chaos blood world or w/e it was called. I'm not sure if he ever revisited his blaze world after rank8. Why?...

Romance. I dunno, typical case where his first and real fiance is someone who he ends up barely interacting with and two other girls being relevant for 200 chapters and then cya (I mean, they are still there, but kind of not there, I guess). For the first girl, I'm not sure if they even kissed once, I'm actually so frustrated that they never even slept together seeing how positive of an impact this would be on her. Instead he slept with some random soul s*ave. Just... so weird

The 300 years ago event and his age... confused me too much for me to even try to understand... I've just let it go.

Combat, especially mass-combat, felt very crudely done. It felt like in any many vs many it was just 1 guy fighting 1 guy in turns.

Everything about this novel is quite good except for some incredibly major problems:

1: The bad guys are overtly evil and yet the not-bad guys are incredibly bad at dealing with them and never properly preemptively guard against what's obviously coming. It happens CONSTANTLY and makes me more angry at the author than anyone in the story.

Spoiler

Dark Asura Hall is responsible for all the mu*derous conflict between Nebula Pavilion & Shattered Ice Manor, and their sub-Limestone tier subordinate families, because immediately after a bloody conflict with a lot of blood debts between the two groups, they station Nebula Pavilion at the same city as Shattered Ice Manor, thereby guaranteeing a vicious cycle of constant conflict and mu*dering. (Not a single person points this fact out, despite the information being given pretty straightforwardly)

Du Haitian lures all his rivals in the sect into a trap where they all get butchered- but it was his people giving them the information and everyone knows he's a psychotic conniving megalomaniacal mu*derer.

Liang Shaoyang, a known killer, tries to have someone literally assassinated in the sect and then literally just as they discover it was him, he comprehends one of the twelve pillars of the sect (which is absolutely ludicrous timing and if there isn't some trick behind it the author must be trying to top his own bad writing), gaining immediate immunity from all repercussions (plot armor for bad guys is another problem). Then he, surprise surprise, tries to have more people killed (one of which is someone who also comprehended the pillars) and somehow, through sheer ret*rdation she ends up getting punished and all the elders and sect master immediately ignore her and believe him, despite his reputation and the fact that she's been with them for years- though continuing the ret*rdation, she never thinks to mention that she never actually struck him and he's faking the event to cause problems- AND TO GO FURTHER, she doesn't even f*cking mention he literally tried to have her assassinated.

The sect master and the elders, acting like a bunch of drooling ret*rds, completely cast off the genius girl who's been with them for years for a new person to be the sect master, despite him being overtly evil. She has informed them of his assassination attempt and they, despite having knowledge of how he's a killer and would totally be willing to do such a thing to gain the sect master seat (therefore making him power-hungry and untrustworthy to others in his own sect and THEREFORE UNQUALIFIED TO BE SECT MASTER), completely don't believe her and then within like ten days they completely cut off all resources of the sect that she had access to. My suspension of disbelief is utterly shattered here, it's like the bad guys can just waltz in wherever they want and have total immunity from repercussions and gain power without having to do anything at all.

Thus far both major conflicts in the story (3 if you count the Du family trying to take over the Ling family, which is actually odd and kind of insignificant in hindsight, making it questionable why the relatively powerful Du family bothered with such a minor family) are specifically about evil people in a sect trying to kill other people in the sect to take it over. The author needs to be more creative and switch things up.

[collapse]

2: The protagonist takes his sweet time doing things that the audience is well aware he needs to be doing, and it's just exasperating.

Spoiler

He finds out someone had a messenger killed and sent their own messenger, likely calling in their own forces to hush up the other groups here by killing them all? He does literally nothing for 4 days and acts surprised when it comes true at the last second.

He repaired two of his friends' weapons, making them far more powerful than they were before, but he doesn't remember to give the weapons to his friends when they're in life-threatening danger until someone else mentions how their current weapons are shit.

The sect has twelve important pillars and anyone who can comprehend anything from even one instantly gains the sect's full support and becomes one of their absolute most valued and protected disciples, so what does the protag do? He puts it off and never bothers to even attempt to comprehend them for over at least six months.

[collapse]

The protagonist is NOT some kind of genius, he's not even very clever. He seems to only be powerful because of his advantages. This sets him apart from most other protagonists who, while they tend to need to depend on their special advantages, are frequently wily, cunning and/or extremely talented in some regards. (I'm actually okay with this, it makes things a little interesting- as long as he doesn't act like an imbecile!)

Just the fact that there hasn't been a mention of alchemy and instead all the crafting focus is on Artificers sets this apart from most other cultivation stories.

His background is mysterious and it does add something to the story, making me curious what it ultimately will be (undoubtedly some high-ranking force, probably Gold tier).

There are actually a decent number of good, likeable characters- unfortunately the one-sidedly vicious, evil characters are too much and make things less interesting.

At this time, I have decided to drop this novel. It always makes me feel a bit sad when I was reading something with potential but the author just wouldn't make any effort to make the situation at all plausible and not infuriatingly s*upid. I'm unwilling to invest my time in something the author clearly won't invest logical thought into. <<less

I really wanted to like this novel but something about it just irks me. Instead of being entertained by it, I feel like it's a bit too chaotic. There's so much betrayal that you start questioning every relationship the MC forms. Enemies becomes friends and friends become enemies, and you just have to wait for the backstabbing to begin. I feel that real life is already quite complicated so if you are like me that enjoys escaping reality by reading, this novel might not do the trick.

I am writing this for all those who have read the negative reviews about MC disposition and turned away from this diamond as I once did because of it. I am not going to talk much, only say as with any novel the MC has a starting point and grows from then on, it is to be expected.

this is from Chapter 675 a section that shows his growth in character best. I have edited out info to make it as spoiler free as possible.

He never thought that (Girl A) would turn down one proposal after another for two years straight, seemingly waiting for him all this time.

He suddenly felt a bout of strange amus**ent.

Back then, he, a ripe greenhorn who entered (Place), was given no attention by (Girl A) at all. Moreover, he was often scorned against and attacked repeatedly by her.

But after he grew stronger at (Place B), experienced a breakthrough in realm and encountered (Girl A) once more, he only needed to switch a face and an identity to easily win (Girl A) ’s heart. He had caused (Girl A) to lose two years of her life in a false relationship; one that she was so deep in that she couldn’t walk away.

The two points of interaction between (Girl A) and him were as different as heaven and earth.

“Why is that?” Qin Lie thought to himself.

A long time later, he gradually came to understood why.

(Girl A) had never changed. She had always been the way she was be it in terms of identity, behavior, appearance, or realm. She had never changed.

But he himself had changed completely.

When he first entered (Place A), he was wooden, shy, weak and introvert. He possessed neither an outstanding identity nor any self-confidence.

The second time he encountered (Girl A), he was arrogant, brash, powerful and full of confidence. He had also picked up a brand new identity.

Although in both cases it was still him, his time at (Place c), his battles in the Realm A, and his experience as a foreign delegate had increased his charisma by leaps and bounds when he encountered (Girl A) once more. He was a far better man, which was why (Girl A) had looked favorably upon him and fell for him easily.

“Change and the improvement of one’s insight, mind and strength would naturally cause someone to exude a completely different aura. So that’s why...” Qin Lie abruptly came to realization.

It was at this moment he experienced a magical feeling of enlightenment, deepening his knowledge.

The story in this novel is decent enough to be readable when you are waiting on the translations of better novels. This one is quite a bit better than Invincible while sharing many of its less desirable traits. The overly padded word count leads to an easily skippable 50-70% of each chapter. tr*shy authors like this tend to over imbellish and try to give the reader a sense of the profoundness or impressiveness of things by literally saying, "THIS (insert random thing that's supposed to be impressive here) IS IMPRESSIVE!",... more>> instead of trusting the reader to form their own opinions. Proof that most chinese webnovelists are idiots who never read a good book or payed attention in writing class. Other than the obvious faults this novel has a lot of parts where it is naming all these characters you aren't going to care about literally 5-10 chapters later and just wasting your time reading as much as possible to increase the word count in order to make more rmb by having more chapters. This novel in particular does have some good ideas and original concepts but the implementation and writing style are serious detractors from the overall novel experience. Save this one for in between times when you need something to read while you're trying to fall asleep late at night and it'll last you a long time. Otherwise go ahead and read it in a state of full alertness and skip 60% of each chapter with quick speedreading and smash through it in a couple days. Be prepared to be dissapointed if you are trying to give this one a serious read as it isn't very good if you are reading at the pace of the translation.

Edit: I was thinking more of martial world as I was writing this review and later realized that this novel is a bit different. TLDR version of this novel review would be...

explanation of some stuff,

repeat explanation differently,

repeat again slightly differently,

have a conversation about said thing that was repeated 3 times,

something might happen and be explained twice

someone might say something else that was explained

explanation of the thing someone already had a conversation about

end of chapter, rinse, repeat possibly with explanations from the previous chapter. <<less

Overall it's pretty good. Kind of slow at parts, but that's normal. I kind of lost interest around 800, so I'm stopping with it for now and waiting for more chapters to build up.

I feel like the earlier chapters had more interactions with other characters while the last 100 feel like he only interacts to get the news of where to go fight next. Solo cultivation, is boring as hell. No one to make jokes or anything, no one to flirt with, just cultivation.. That much focus is a cultivation... more>> deviation. <<less

2 stars. Here is why;

MC is always fighting against people much stronger than him and since he is the MC he wins. Guess how? Plot armor ofc. Most of the time our MC has no idea how he will get through the trouble he is facing (and he faces a lot of them, like, wherever he goes that place gets fcked up).

There is also a pacing issue. I mean the story progress slowly but MC never gets to rest. When you think he can finally settle down for little... more>> while immediately another bullsh*t conflict starts. Let the guy stay at one place for more than few chapters ffs.

MC is weak. Author keeps telling how his skills are op but then, you realize he is in some shithole continent (not Africa Mr. Trump) and there are still so called geniuses who are stronger than him. I mean if you are gonna make the MC weak why say he is practising one of the opest techniques in the universe. The MC keeps getting one op technique after another but he is still weak at the end of the day.

Mc's character makes no sense. He is so inconsistent I can't even say he has a character. He just acts randomly. Sometimes he is domineering, sometimes he is a sissy. One chapter he acts like the epitome of justice, in another he acts like a villain.

Well at least translation is good so there is that. Good for wasting time and waiting for other novels.

Tldr; This novel is frustrating and makes no sense but there are definitely worse novels out there. <<less

The only thing I can say after reading all the review is that, you can't really relied on the review to actually determined whether the novel suit your own taste. For me Spirit Realm start good, then going down hill starting from the armament sect arc, Qin Lie is just arrogant, I know that most Chinese novel have MC that is arrogant, at least one way or another they have something that can back up their arrogance but Qin Lie just an idiot that making enemies all over the place,... more>> what tick me off is after Qin Lie is suck into the demon world, he basically bombed many villages and killed many horned demons, and the next thing is they are invited to stay in the horned demon world. I know that Qin Lie grandfather (?) have basically saved the horned demon, but are we just gonna ignored the fact that Qin Lie basically mu*der all the villager, I mean it's understandable during war, but Qin Lie basically sneak into the demon world and mu*der all the innocent horned demon that does not involve in the war (women, children.. Etc). <<less

MC is so s*upid and ignorant. He is very weak against beautiful woman (common in cn novel) and it is so annoying. Just like one girl who trying to attack him with charming skill but she failed, and ended with MC didn't do nothing even he helped her with put his life on the line. WTF...

Not bad for story but also not very good.

Now before people like/dislike the review let me be a bit honest - I don't like novels which are constant mayhem just for the heck of it. What I like to see is every arc to be setup as independent story with its own - start, middle and end. If it just jumps from one fight to another without setup then it's pure filler. Others might see it differently and like the mayhem. So the story went pretty decently with it's setup for the most part. Though it had it's share of repetitions things dint get out of hand. And then came the "third/fourth arc", I guess:
Spoiler

1. Starting with the family
2. Joining Sect 1
3. Running from Sect 1 and ending up in Sect 2 (Armament Sect)
4. Now the Netherworld

[collapse]

and by the end of the last arc and starting of this arc, wheels start to come off. There is constant fighting for the heck of it and the new arc happens by "accident" - the dues ex machina of arc setup.
I tried to preserve to see if the writer goes back and tries his hand at setting things before fights but no, he doesn't. Still if you are looking for something with lots of mayhem, look no further.

Firstly, I'm not writing this review to grade it and speak about its advantages. So far, it is so-so, but good enough compared to many other CN, thus my grade hovers around 6 out of 10. And I'm one of those more demanding readers.

The thing I want to address, is people like riida who apparently can't read, despite having such a nick. They're saying how MC is ret*rded coz there is no point to him pretending to be a fool. Well, I've got bad news for you: you guys can't... more>> read for shit. My reasoning:

Spoiler

First of all, at the beginning, it isn't MC who acts like a ret*rd. He IS one, in a sense, because his cultivation technique makes his soul leave his body to a certain degree. Hence, his body only does what it was programmed to like a robot and nothing more. He doesn't have his senses in his state, but rather is cut off from the world and only finds out what happened once he exists this state -it's like reading the log of what happened despite not being there to supervise it. However, for most of the time of his "pretending to be a ret*rd", he is unable to exit it by himself. Later, he indeed gains that ability as well knows that is happening in real time and pretends to be a fool, but it is not to avoid responsibilities, but rather any attention. If he was to be found out, with his strength, he'd end up like Martial Asura or PMG where MC had to drive out rival families raiding their own families. Only, it isn't HIS family, he just stays there because of his grandpa's arrangement as he has a good place to cultivate there. It's like studying at a school doesn't mean you have to help the local bullies fight the bullies from another school, and if you show off you can fight well, they'll pester you to help them. Well, of course no one would pretend to b a fool to avoid that, just pretend to be an average guy. I admit that the author wrote a sentence or two around ch 20 where it sounded like it justified your claims, but if you can read between the lines and see all the bullsh*t that was happening there (those who think you can have the power to do sth and not have any responsibilities and expectations of other ppl once they know of it, they simply don't know life) that he didn't have to worry about coz everyone thought him a fool, and then read the novel as far as I did and see all that happened once others knew he wasn't a fool but one of the strongest amongst them, then you will understand what it was exactly that he wanted to avoid. He just wants to finish cultivating (as in, get to the next stage or sth), which will take him sth like 3 months at the moment he was found out if I got it right, and then leave this family as he doesn't rly consider himself one of them. And also about the thunder plot armor, it is indeed unlikely, but not impossible. It's like being baffled because it started raining during rainy season and you were about to go water your flowers in the garden, but now don't have to. I don't think it's because of your plot armor... Plus, it may be my misconception, but I felt like it was his power that attracted the storm and made it form faster. EDIT AFTER READING CH 71: in this chapter author provided reasoning for that thunder plot armor (though not explicitly), which shows it wasn't actually plot armor, more like a lucky bullseye. Dunno though if he was going to do it from the start or Chinese readers told him to do sth about it b4 he wrote it xD

This was quite long, but I was fooled by the ppl who claimed what I have just proven wrong above, and only started reading it several months later bcoz of it when I was bored and attempted to read it with the healing-the-dead-horse-as-if-it-was-alive kind of attitude. So I am quite peeved at them. Not at the fact that I got to read it late, but that they write reviews not understanding the subject. Now it seems like I've gotta READ all CN rather than rely on any reviews in case I got misled by another, heh, fool.

For positives, you've got other ppl's reviews where they get into details after having read much more than I have. This review is just to warn you ppl so that you aren't duped by those who can't fully understand what they're reading, regardless if it's bcoz it being too much of a mental challenge, or that they're not fully focusing on it, or just bring their prejudices into reading the novel. Regards to u guys, and remember not to rely on reviews that much and see stuff for yourself -- whether review says sth is good or bad. <<less

Okay so for me this is partially a vent tied along into a review. Although I gave it a 4/5 stars it feels more like a 3.5. I see all of these reviews and comments on all of these different sites but what is incredibly mind blowing to me is how nobody has managed to notice the constant back-tracking or inconsistencies that happen in this novel as if they don't exist! On so many occasions a character will say or do one thing and act shocked like they didn't know... more>> 'this result' will happen, but then the next chapter the character is like, "I actually knew this would happen" or "I planned this all along." Like really what the hell?

The story in and of itself is pretty good.

The world building is a solid 8/10 for me

Character development I'd actually even give it a 9/10.... If there weren't these strange inconsistencies that pop up that make you go "I thought the author said that 'blah blah blag' earlier..? or was it somehow translated wrong...?" soooo 7.5/10

Ah yes and the way the author builds up the Romance is pretty clean too. 9/10 I do understand why a lot of people dislike some of the girls too, but in my head I always try to keep in mind that 'this is still a Wuxia novel'.

Enemies. I kind of included my score for them in character development. This novel does an excellent job with actually giving a lot of so-called villains reasons for their actions which constantly surprised me because I'm not used to reading it in these type of novels so its refreshing. At the same time... It's only for a select few enemies that this happens for. 8/10

Consistency -.... 6/10. Okay so the lifespan thing in this novel where I'm at currently is also confusing as hell. <<less

This is a below average cultivation novel. The early chapters are pretty good, but the latter ones are crap.

Thoughts:

    • Early chapter fights are really great, up close and personal, but unfortunately most of the later fights are terrible and they often drag on for many chapters and have anticlimactic results. Other aspects of the story also feel artificially dragged on. "You will know when you are ready", "Your long lost relative wants to see you but he cant right now, try again in another 500 chapters".
    • Most fights end with the enemy getting away, it is incredibly frustrating because it happens so often that it is predictable.
    • Exposition is poorly done, all the characters, including the MC, have a tendency to explain their plan to their opponent who then escapes. MC also magically knows things sometimes cause of his magic blood or whatever, it is a terrible way to expose the audience to the story. The world itself, the different realms, and passage way to them are pretty interesting.
    • In almost every arc (so far) the enemy ends up becoming a necessary ally against a bigger threat, This can be fun a couple of times, but it quickly looses its charm.
EDIT: Dropped it, it just kept getting worst, it suffers from the same problems as MGA|

EDIT2: I realized afterwards that it ended very shortly after I dropped it, but I don't care to finish it.

Quit mediocre novel, unlike some bs 5-star reviews said. It's about the same level (or slightly lower) as martial god asura. This is a bit boring bellow average novel and is easily predictable. You can literally jump a 3-5 chapters every now and then and still perfectly understand everything.

After having read over 1k chapters, I am disappointed in how it seems to be turning out. It is your typical, run for your life, but kill everyone MC, who is powerful and better than his contemporaries, but is always running into situations, where he is just way to weak to do anything.

The start was good imo, but then it just kept going from one place to another, with nothing being really finished, except at the start. I lost track of people quite easily.

Since it has been a year or... more>> longer since I read it, I can also testify that is quite forgettable, since the above is about the only things I remember despite reading over 1000 chapters. <<less

I find it sad seeing 1-2 star "top rated" reviews done by people that only read 25-50 chapters without giving this novel a chance to shine.

A chance, thats what you need to give it, stick with it and you wont be sorry.

While the novel isnt anything new and conforms to the standard xuanhuan template, its charms lay in the quality of the writing, in the pacing, and the attention to the side characters, which dont feel like empty shells meant to further the plot but rather are well thought up... more>> characters that help push the plot forward, this doeant mean that the MC wont always be in the spot light, but the side characters are far from useless.

Bag that up with a fair amount of weekly chapters and an amazing translation team and you get a great novel just waiting to be binge read :)

Pros.

- high quality writing.

- good pacing.

- fleshed out characters (main and side characters).

- lots of plot twists that will keep you at the edge of your chair/sofa/bed/toilet seat.

- great translation team.

- main story isnt too repetitive.

Cons.

- sometimes the plot twists and turns feel forced.

- start is slow, apparently not many people get through it.

- im not too sure about the romance aspect :x

Thanks for reading and hope this little review gets you even a little curious about the story :) <<less

I both love and hate this novel to the absolute peak... It's a very annoying feeling because this novel is really well written, it has a very beautiful landscape and interesting techniques and systems throughout the story I've read so far, but it's also such a psychological beatdown that it's frustrating to read.

To try and put it as best as I can, the author is truly going out of his way to not only make the main character being constantly pushed down and have obstacles at every turns, betrayals from... more>> people he thought was his friends to the strongest people of the current arc doing all they can to makes his life a living misery, he also want us, the readers to feel that frustration that Qin Lie feels. He wants us to be angry and frustrated on how absolutely hammered this MC is and it's going to leave you frustrated even after you stop reading.

I would also like to point out that there are some reviews I've read here saying that the MC is too arrogant and offends people left and right and as such he's not a coherent MC, I would like to explain why this is a very crude way of seeing it but because some people might deem it a spoiler I'll put it in a spoiler tag.

Spoiler

As the synopsis says, Qin Lie is an amnesiac, that means he doesn't remember anything that happened before he became 10 years old. There are however moments, such as in dreams and under deep distress that he catches glimpses of his life before he was 10 and those memories are of people cruelly teaching him languages, information on treasures and also torturing him in darkness so that he would become a brutal monster with no sympathy or emotions.

This is the problem that relates to people thinking he's too arrogant and offends people left and right, because there are often times where the personality from before he was 10 and when he was after slightly fuses, causing him to become extremely conflicting and it changes his personality. He's not actually arrogant, he's just struggling to an extreme extent to figure out who he is and control his personality once those occations flare up. He also has ancient diagrams that was left behind by (probably) his parents that are meant to calm his soul down, which he spends a lot of time doing gradually soothing his personality back to normal, only for it to flare up again on a later occation.

Calling this MC extremely and pointlessly arrogant is not right in my opinion because it's a factor of him trying to figure out who he actually is, it's also one of the reasons I love this novel because it's not only a story of where you feel frustration of how others treat the MC, you also see just how much the MC himself struggles within his own mind, fighting between the monster before he became an amnesiac and the gentle person he is now. The battle of these two behaviours is the cause to both enemies and friends inside the story and one of the best factors of the entire book, because I've read no other novel that has such a factor.

[collapse]

All in all, by what I've read so far, I really enjoy the novel, but frustrated by how the MC is treated, if such a thing affects you more than "usual", read it in short bursts and don't binge read it, it's only gonna piss you off even more. <<less
