This WN is very good if you like your typical powerleveling story with a samurai twist. The author has clearly done their research when it comes to the historical context of the time period when this story was set. One star lost due to the over excessive sexualisation of the MC. I get that it’s something that needs to be done to get more readers, but you hear about it around once at least every 15 sentences and it interrupts the flow of the story a little. Overall though, this... more>> is an excellent read. I may update this when I have read further. <<less

Let's just make this short, since the other reviews here pretty much discussed both the pros and cons.

The story is great, especially the Japanese folklore involved but the MAJOR downside is that the author keeps on emphasizing the beauty of the MC and the MC can be pretty annoying at every chapter.

Although it can be understandable that the MC develops some weird quirks being in a female body, the fact that he constantly attributes it to the body just feels frustrating.

Another important downside is that the MC is pretty much... more>> a hypocrite most of the time. Especially since he seems to denounce the discrimination against females yet he himself discriminates. <<less

TLDR: Where it's good it's very good but after ch 200 it went downhill 4 stars

This was like reading a Kurasawa movie. A really fun look at Japanese myths and samurai culture, with a dash of echi thrown in. The characters are well developed and rather fun. The translation is superb, and the world building is marvelous.

I just wish it didn't run out of steam

If you think of the plot of the story as a whole it is kinda cliche but the types we love.i don't know what others think but I think the author is a degenerate and a genius at the same time because he can make simple tasks like walking in the woods and drinking tea sound like a beautiful poem and I am not exaggerating. The pacing is good and although there is the problem most gender benders have where all the things that have dicks and balls are evil... more>> there are guys that you would respect for the things they do for their people and the pc that is a good point I think and the characters are really detailed which makes it easier to think of them as real people. Thats what I think of this light novels and also the author is kinda pe*verted and has weird fetishes like sweats and stuff but I like it :) 👍 <<less

A somewhat simple yet very enjoyable plot, accompanied by a great story along with attention to details in this world. The story has great potential, not to mention it was very pleasant to read (Also how the TL added in some notes to explain what the story was referencing was a nice touch, added to the atmosphere). The characters feel unique in their own ways and helps build up the immersion of the story.

Overall a nice story to read.

The novel is good, I especially like Chinese novels which have no chinese names, like this one or 'release that witch'. It's a reincarnated MC, as usual, but the story is new and interesting right on the first chapter. Still, I'm not reading this because currently there are too few chapters.

Over a thousand chapters translated of a novel that stretches over two thousand chapters and is still ongoing.

Honest opinion? Cookie cutter gender bender harem with our male lead (yes, they're a man pretending to be a woman, not a real woman) obsessing over their body in the most disgusting way possible and women throwing themselves at his feet.

So, you want actual yuri? Don't. Read. Gender bender.

... more>> You want a good story? Don't. Read. Harem.

You want resolution to plot developments? Don't. Read. Novels. With. Over. 1000. Chapters.

There ya go. Hopefully I've saved someone a looooooooooot of time. If you're smart (unlike me) and you still want to try reading, you'll probably abandon ship long before I did.

I punish myself in the name of yuri too much. <<less

Honest the story so far is pretty good. At the same time the story is very hypocritical, the writing is very sexist but at the same is full of powerful women. The story is very ecchi but never actually crosses the line (even if sometimes you wish it did). Well it did happen once but was written in such is way that you would have to use a decoder to read it that way. The author also does mention her body a lot, but if you don't focus on it... more>> it's not that bad. I did stop reading for a year or two around chapter 150ish, but when I came back I was able to read all the to 539 with only a few chapters where I was like "really". They were chapters where she gets "debuffed" for a while but that later turned out to be important. In the end the story has very few plot holes and the enemies have been getting more and more personality. (At least the powerful ones are the small fry still suck.)

Lily can be frustrating at times but usually in the end everything turns out fine and often has reasons or reactions that actually effect the story hundreds of chapters later. The story is good as long as you don't go out of your way to over analyst it. Does he really have a logical reason to love his senior sister so much, likely not, but when are real people logical all the time? Also don't worry about anything being forgotten, they almost always show up again, and everything she started with plays a major role in the story. (Except her clothes, unless their high grade they are almost always destroyed in battle.) <<less

I've been reading this for quite sometime now and I've come to like this story. There were times when I felt frustrated by how much the MC hides her potential and lets herself be bullied but I feel like it's very logical. The MC is slowly growing stronger and learns from her mistakes until she is able to overcome her problems.

I also applaud the author for being a creative person when it came to the, um, mature scenes. I think that this book is well balanced and it's also one... more>> of a kind since I don't see a historical, drama, comedy, GB, yuri, harem type of book a lot.

The characters are unique and they each have their own distinct personality that makes them different from both the MC and the other characters around them. I also like how the author doesn't only focus on the MC but gives a chapter or two about another character that is likely related to the MC.

I think I can understand how other people don't really find this book as something that suits their tastes because I felt the same thing at first. I just think that it's worth to give this story a shot if ever someone is into a historical, GB, yuri. If they like an MC who likes to take their time in exploring things and extending their capabilities then I can say that they will be interested in our dear MC. <<less

I like this but this novel is definitely written for a specific audience and if you don't fall within that group there is a good chance you will hate it.

It's a chinese telling of an alternate japanese history which is kind of just bizzare but I really like it. The internal struggle of the MC is really interesting to me. It's almost comedic and tragic at the same time. A lot of characters have just enough mystery or personality to them to keep them interesting. Also, The translations are actually... more>> done really really well.

All of that being said, the story does have flaws. All the females are lesbian somehow. There is a particular characteristic in a lot of Chinese novels where characters show disproportionate amounts of agression or retailation to even the most mundane slights. Those tendencies are present in this novel and they do annoy me every time. Some of the ecchi scenes are well done but a vast majority of them are repetitive or just forced without any real logic as to how or why these things are happening. The author seems to have a few different fetishes that they lean into quite heavily. If you share those fetishes it's probably not a big deal. But, if you're like me and you dont share those fetishes.... is uh.. it's a lot sometimes.

Like I said, I really like this but I would have a really really hard time recomending it to a good majority of people. It's definitely a niche type of novel and not for everyone. But hey, if you're feeling adventurous give it a go. <<less

I don't really know what to say regarding this novel.

Translation: Very good, probably one of the best translations, for a Chinese novel, that I've read in a while.

Plot: The plot is okay and it slowly gets revealed over time. I'd say that the plot itself is good and relatively interesting, but other factors overtake and ruin this aspect. If I were to give a review solely based on the plot, then I'd probably give it a 4/5 or 4.5/5. That's how much I enjoy reading the plot.

Characters: This is where... more>> the plot starts to get ruined. The characters, as a whole, are actually pretty good. They have some cliches about them, but I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. The only problem is that the males is the story, as a whole, are a bunch of degenerate a**holes who only think about raping women (at least when it comes to the MC). Of course, I'm only generalizing here as not every man is like this, but for the most part, it doesn't get much better than that. Now, onto the females. The females in the story all seem to be lesbian, but only when it comes to the MC. As soon as any girl sees the MC they instantly fall for her and become obsessed. This is extremely infuriating the more you read as it doesn't get any better. There is no reason for the women in the story to fall for our MC, they just do. This is also about half of the story and is sometimes even chapters or several chapter-long rants about how much another woman is in love with the MC or how sexy and cute the MC is.

Now that we got that out of the way, let's discuss the MC, Kagami Lily.

For the most part, I like the MC. She's a well-fleshed-out character with her own strengths and weaknesses. She possesses a good mindset and has a decent head on her shoulders. Her personality is rather meek and shy for the most part, which I find odd. She used to be a man whose soul was transported into a woman's body, but there is nothing about him that shows that he used to be a man. Even if he was a shy and weak little boy in his previous life, you'd expect that after gaining great strength, he wouldn't be such a little b*tch. He is constantly blushing at nothing, always says "Eh?!" to just about everything which makes his usual smart self look like a f*cking idiot. He is constantly talking about his senior sister and how he'll do anything to get stronger so he can find a way to revive her, but this is only in times of need and is often used as plot armor. Every time he is in a difficult situation, all he needs to do is think "How can I die now when I haven't even revived Senior Sister?!" and he will instantly become smarter, gain like twice as much power, and end the fight in an instant. His resolve to stay loyal to his Senior Sister/Previous Life Lover is incredibly weak. As long as the other party is a girl, he'll allow them to do anything to her, whether it be touching her skin, breasts, butt, body, kiss, pretty much as long as they don't stick a d*ck inside her it doesn't matter. And after this is done to her, she'll just gloss over it while still thinking she's remaining faithful. I wouldn't have an issue with this if she wanted to have a harem, but he doesn't which is the problem. If she didn't blush at everything, was more decisive, and didn't let these b*tches in heat do whatever they want to her, then Lily would be an amazing character with a great plot that has a pure and righteous cause.

Setting: The setting is in a parallel version of ancient Japan that has demons and beasts running amok in the world. The world is slowly growing along with the main character and I find myself encapsulated by how big and amazing the world is. Samurai are everywhere and are constantly fighting not only each other but the demons as well. If this were all, then the story would be absolutely perfect. But the problem lies with the samurai. These guys are absolute degenerate pieces of tr*sh. The demons, that are supposedly the main villain, are better than these samurai. These demons actually possess rational thought with in-depth feelings rather than the samurai who only seem to care about money and women. The story constantly talks about the honor of samurai, but so far there has only been a few samurai, both male, and female, that I would consider honorable. One of those is Lily, but the few honorable samurai usually die, crippled, or abandoned soon after they are introduced so they aren't worth mentioning.

Overall: There are so many aspects to this story that I find enjoyable, so much so, that I don't want to stop reading. The various issues I have, by themselves, aren't that big of a deal, but out of the nearly 250 chapters that I've read, only about 100 or so are actually readable. The other 150 are either talking about how sexy the MC is, how much she sweats, her scent, her blushing at every word someone says to her, how possessive the women in love with her are, and various other things that only take away from the story. I find myself skipping these scenes or even whole chapters as they are completely useless to the story while only making it worse. The yuri scenes are bad and feel out of place, the relationships the MC has are dull and shallow, the MC has an incredibly weak personality, and the background characters serve no purpose other than making the story worse. If I didn't believe in the potential of the story, I'd give it a 0/5 since literally half of what is written is pointless. That, in my opinion, is worse than just a bad plot or bad characters.

Verdict: I give it a 5/10 due to the potential I see in the story along with the elements that the author does well. I believe that if I keep reading then hopefully the author will stop writing pointless scenes. <<less

Demon Sword Maiden is a hidden gem. Our protaganist is gender bent into his crush after they both die together on earth. Her soul is comatose while he or now she, must survive in a dystopian samurai world. Demons, vices, and danger are ever present. While she does meet some kind souls, she meets far more greedy for her possessions, beauty, or strength.

Our protaganist has thrown everything away for love, he/she cannot even be considered girl or boy anymore. Though the determination and dignity of a man is maintained, so... more>> is the grace and ethereal beauty of a maiden obtained. Lily is a very interesting character due to all this.... and becomes more so as the series progresses.

Ultimately, the plot is good as it is unpredictable. The s*xual and yuri undertones are more so comedic than sexy. I find the story to be excellent. <<less

This is a very, very good novel, even though it makes me go"WTF am I reading?!" every five chapters.

This novel is both, a dramatic samurai ghost story in ancient Japan _and_ an ecchi Yuri BD*M fan-service.

And it works. Both parts are perfectly interwoven and support each other! Masterful!

... more>> The world is breathing and alive, the "Samurai system" works (comparably with something like Against the Gods), and the main character (s) Lily, Uesugi Rei and Misachi (?) have depth.

There are a lot of things that bother me, but as they stem from the unique combination of plot + ecchi, and -more importantly- the author clearly steered away from that direction in the later volumes, I give it a pass.. 5*!

Spoiler
  • Either women are suppressed OR they hold all the most important offices and are the humans with the most combat potential (Cursed swords, mirror girls,...)
  • Too many clichés (Rei = bad at directions, Shiu = blabbermouth, Nanako = chest envy)
    • They seem to get dropped later on (V2+)
  • Kagura, Nanako and Shiu are bland and annoying. It is as if the lvl 100 Lily still has to drag around her lvl 5 side-kicks.
    • At least Shiu should have never been employed, as she can hold no secret.
  • Why is every other woman a MILF, a lesbian _and_ deep into S&M?!
  • The "bath" scene in V1 was very, very strange. Honestly, wtf?!
  • Lily is a great character, but I would like her to be more cruel and less s*upid. Her base-naiveté is "cute" and works, but if someone is a traitor, you don't welcome them back with open arm and then go pikachu_face when they stab you in the back again. Same for someone that tried their hardest to kill you just earlier.
    • I really like the "overly feminine" mode of her. This was most emphasized in the beginnings of V1 and I hope it comes back again.
  • The whole gender-bender backstory is weird but also works very well. Will it end in a male-females harem? Will Lily fully transform into a woman? What is going on with the elder sister? Everything is weird, new and I have no idea!

Honestly, I don't know how this got a decent ranking. The premise of the story is good. There's a goal, characters and magic. Yay.

HOWEVER, this author has a lot of issues. Especially the portrayal of the characters. Every single time, he feels the need to comment of the beauty of the main character, the smell of her sweat and her breasts. I already get the general description, I don't need to imagine the author drooling over his keyboard as he writes.

I can accept the previous issue since it's pretty standard.... more>> What I can't accept is the constant simping over him/herself of the main character. My god! He/she is also extremely undetermined despite how they tell themselves. Imagine setting a goal for yourself to become the strongest and then getting distracted by a store that sells nice stuff. They know that the world is a strong eat the weak world yet they constantly antagonise people.

Being a trouble magnet is par for the course, you might say. Well yeah, but this MC is jumping headfirst into a lavapool. If it wasn't for the heavy plot armour, instant death.

My last issue is the portrayal of the girls and the guys. The author clearly doesn't understand either very well and the assumptions and explanations for all the pervy stuff show it all. I may not understand much either, but I sure as hell know that a person who walked away from efficiently killing 4 people without any mental burden would scream like a child when seeing an Imp in a forest were, you expect to see imps.

  1. I apologize, this has become more of a rant than a review. I like the premise of the story and any man of culture would like echhi, but not when it's this forced. Thank you for your time.

.... Haaa there are times where crossing over two genres from differing cultures turns out great, this is not one of those times. The Author is a pe*vert and constantly thinking with his dick, but not outright putting anyone in *ahem* situations, just that he makes too much mention of things he really shouldn't... No joke it reminds me of a webnovel written by h**ny tweens that focus too much on details like how the protagonist is very sweaty, and the like. Beyond that shitshow, there is also the issue... more>> of they tried to blend Japanese with wuxia in a way that makes the entire story boring, too much arrogance, hypocritical characters, and people that don't stick to their personality. Oh suddenly this character has memory issues like a ditz, why wasn't this done sooner? Idk screw yourself. The entire novel ain't consistent the yuri is terrible and there really ain't any progress here, and the author loves to swear, making a lot of censored words in the thing which makes it even more unreadable. All in all? The author did have a good concept, you can enjoy the first few chapters, but beyond that, you will be more annoyed than corrupted nobles in a grimdark story. I'm not joking there's way too much inconsistency with the clans of this novel and everyone does things dishonorably which really shouldn't be done in an honor striven society at the time. Want a better read? Legend of the Five Rings has a better portrayal than this shit <<less

Honestly it's quite entertaining, a bit risque at times, but here we're given the story of a Demon Sword Maiden as she (originally he) is thrust into a unknown ancient japan like world and he/she travels the path of a Samurai, or more accurately a Demon Sword Maiden. yeah, I know, it has its cons, no story is perfect

But the novel itself is incredible, the world is very well thought out and everything is well arranged, it doesn't feel artificially long or anything

... more>> the events are exciting and ingenious, and everything is well built in general, the only problem is the character of the protagonist but something minimal in my opinion

it's very good as a story... some want to complain just because to complain

I mean, let get it out of the way. Its pretty much exactly how some other people described it. Hella cringey with the author and his sweat fetish, and sexualizing the MC every chapter he can. The plot is pretty average at best, you can tell the author really has no long term planning here and is just writing softcore p*rn here.

BUT, after you get past the first volume, it has some improvement. Less weird fetish stuff and a bit more combat and training. Its not still great by no... more>> means, but its alright enough to read a couple chapters a week in. If I could, I would probably rate this a 5/10. Would improve vastly if Lily stopped trying to focus on collecting women and doing SCP, but its already an improvement from volume one. Maybe one day it will improve further. <<less

This MC beta son of a turtle really got a knack for getting on my nerves.

Speaking & thinking about cringe-worthy lines for a living, getting embarrassed for his own body (and soul), and squealing like a pig that's about to be slaughtered on dangerous situations (airplane crash scene).

I'm fine with freezing due to fear, shivering like a washing machine, or even fainting, but screaming is untolerable. An MC has to at least have enough self-control to not scream like a lil bit*h in the face of danger. Else it's too... more>> relatable and I don't want to see my own pathetic self in a novel I read. Even freezing seems exaggerated to me, but I never experienced such fears so that's that. I hope I never experience such a thing because I still like my happy-go-lucky life.

Maybe it'll become better later on with character growth, but I have no patience for such a thing. I couldn't even wait for Overgeared's lil bit*h MC's growth so I also can't do it for this novel. Equality for all. <<less
