Chen Yan travels between worlds, ending up becoming an honorable prince in a medieval fantasy world. Yet this world was not quite as simple as he thought. Witches with magical powers abound, and fearsome wars between churches and kingdoms rage throughout the land.

Roland, a prince regarded as hopeless by his own father and assigned to the worst fief, spends his time developing a poor and backward town into a strong and modern city, while fighting against his siblings for the throne and absolute control over the kingdom. Join Roland as he befriends and allies with witches and, through fighting and even farming, pushes back invaders coming from the realm of evil.

I liked this story very much. The MC is very calm and composed and has a lot of knowledge that he can bring into this isekai world. Because he is a king candidate, he can change a lot of things in this new world. I found his blind trust towards the witches a little dangerous at the beginning, because he didn't even try to verify whether the witches are dangerous or not, but I was then relieved that his trust was the right choice. I liked that there were hardly... more>> any desperate situations to make the story more thrilling, because I dislike that kind of angst in a story. And all the loved characters in the stories stay alive. It was heart-warming. <<less

I kinda hate the mc's mindset, it isnt to the point of unbearable like jp MC but still unlikeable to me. The first thing he think about when he saw a witch power is how to change the world with witch power like wtf. He only been there like 2 days like a conplete newbie know nothing about the world background. I dont mind changing the world but at least dive deep into researching the witches before thinking about that dangerous stuff. The first think he heard about the witches... more>> is religion is bad, they judge witches and doesnt even want to know whether they good or bad (and it more like he thing witches are the complete innocent one here). Why dont he think that this world had suffered so much from witch or what if it is genetic problem that the witches can suppress their desire to wreak harvoc, at least he should have some doubt or some thought about that. His mindset is so one-sided. I dont like religion at all but if I magically go into another world I would have to consider that this religion might have some truth about them since this isnt my old world anymore. I might be wrong but this give me the vibe of those Chinese MC who when they saw a weak (beautiful maybe) woman run into some sort of trouble they always head over heel trying to save the woman, tr*sh the seemingly villain without any background check, no need to ask for story just straight up kill the villain and maybe demolish the whole clan or squad of the villain. And what I say in here is trouble and may not be dangerous situations, maybe that woman is the trouble maker, a thief, a killer, a criminal etc but well nothing matter anymore since the other side is dead. The lack of background research is just so s*upid and even hypocritical sometimes, those chinese MC could have stop the fight, or just bring the woman and run away or disable those villain's ability to fight then ask for the story from both side but nope, what I saw and believe must be the truth :v <<less

Let me start by saying this, the fact that this series has not been licensed yet is astonishing. Anyone who reads online works with any consistency can attest that there are largely two 'types' of novels; there are novels that read like 'fanfiction' and novels that read like actual books. This is the latter. The only other series in recent memory that reads anywhere as well as this is "Everyone Else is a Returnee", although the lengths are obviously quite different (roughly 1, 000 fewer chapters).

Is this series perfect? No.... more>> In fact, the last 100 chapters (as with most similar works) meander a bit as if the author has run out of steam. The ultimate conclusion is somewhat bittersweet, although largely understandable given the circumstances.

As far as worldbuilding, general character writing and situational 'feasibility' are concerned, this series is more than worth the time investment. There are references to real-world technologies and psuedo-scientific explanations for basically every major plot development. There are vignettes and callbacks to seemingly minor characters, each having separate arcs that impact the main story.

And for those of you wondering about the harem tag:

Spoiler

The protagonist develops close bonds with two female leads, both of which are fully fleshed out characters. This is not a Japanese 'gacha isekai harem' experience. At all.

70 chapters in, and everything so predictable. And there's really no progression in character development. I chuckled like once.

It's hard to say, but I just didn't like the matter-of-fact way of telling the story.. It explains everything, upfront and leaves very little for imagination. It felt like I'm taking a science class or a history class... and not reading a novel..

Not my cup of tea.

For a wn with 1500 chapters, I expected this to bog down horribly in the middle, go off on some utterly bullsh*t tangent and self destruct like so many others, and then finally reel off into the abyss of increasingly long chapters to fill out long arcs designed to inflate the overall length. It does not do that folks, although it almost does with the Dream World but the author pulled back before that happened.

The story is pretty good, engineer gets swept into a world of swords and magic, single... more>> handedly starts the industrial revolution (and not a communist one, surprisingly, considering the author is chinese), and then obliterates all obstacles in his path to save the world.

I do think, however, this title could have gone on ~1000 chapters. The end wasn't rushed, but we jump from defeating the enemy of the humans to the destruction of a limited cosmos in about 50 chapters. What I mean by there could be 1000 more chapters is that in between those to plot points there was a ton of additional loose ends to tie up, alliances and wars to be fought, and so on and so forth. Essentially the story jumps from a point that could have been 2/3 through to finished, and I really would have liked to see more.

For f*cks sake, so much plot to explore!

But that frustration isn't enough to kill the story for me because while it has its low points, over all it's one of the best over all, especially compared to the overwhelming amount of wuxia garbage. None of the characters is overwhelming, individually, it's just that the use their abilities in a way the ends up with an overwhelming result. Also, character development is everywhere, and the world itself evolves in a pretty decent manner throughout. I will say that the tone of the story shifts around

in a way that, in retrospect, makes it seem like the story after that pivitol point was not planned for before then, but it doesn't detract from the overall momentum of the plot.

One of the Chinese novels that I was able to complete. That fact alone lifts the novel to 4 at least.

It is essentially a kingdom building story, with a lot of interesting technical and not technical details, developed and interesting characters, and fascinating world-building. It is a certainly well-designed story.

The main character is likable and pretty grounded person. Sometimes he feels too knowledgeable though, but his story is interesting to follow. There are a lot of side stories with various points of view that enrich the narrative and some plot... more>> lines last for a long long time and with the a lot of side characters that have a lot of exposure it makes the story very interesting.

The only lackluster thing is the ending. It is certainly not bad but it is not satisfying. And in general, the last arc feels kinda rushed, confused and the issues there are resolved relatively fast in comparison to the previous arcs where the single enemy was a foe that took many chapters to deal with while in the last chapters ultimate enemies are destroyed relatively fast.

My overall score is 4.7. It is not 5 due to the ending, but honestly, it is really difficult to find the story with a satisfying ending. <<less

I'm a sucker for worldbuilding, and thats almost the whole story of novel. The MC gets reincarnated from modern Asia to a medieval, Europe-ish world, in the body of a royal prince named Roland. And in this world, witches exist. Being an engineer in his now past life, he quickly realizes the worth of these witches. But since there are certain Stigmas against witches, they are despised and hunted. He takes it upon himself to lead this world into an era of development, making use of the witches powers to... more>> develop everything from cannons to better boats and much, much more.
In essence, this is like watching someone play Civilization with a cheat code. What would usually take centuries to develop and build gets produced within months, if not weeks.

Oh, theres also an actual plot of a story of course, and they are pretty good too. It gets a bit complicated and confusing at the end, at least in my opinion, but it does its job and everything gets tied up nicely.

For people who enjoy worldbuilding, this is a must read. <<less

Well written. It's nice to see an MC who has a brain and can use it. The plot moves pretty fast and the little side plots for different characters add more detail to the world. It's a thoroughly entertaining read, highly recommend.

I read all 1498 chapters of this webnovel and I must say that despite its flaws, I still find it the quintessential webnovel to read. It is honestly a masterpiece and although it's not perfect (especially towards the end), I still gave it a 5 star rating simply because I cannot recommend everyone enough: read this novel!

It's so satisfying to watch Roland introduce new technologies and wipe away feudalism. Especially since it is done in a relatively realistic manner, it just completely distinguishes itself from its competition in... more>> the isekai genre. However, with my clear recommendation out of the way, let me go over a list of the novel's shortcomings (Spoilers ahead!) :

Spoiler
    • Lazy game of thrones (AND wasted characters!) : Basically Roland has to compete for the throne with his five siblings, but the competition is so boring and dumb and not even that much of a challenge. One of his brothers is initially killed to kick start the game of thrones. One of his sisters is hiding out on a witch island and not interested in the throne. This leaves three people: Roland, his brother Timothy and his sister Garcia. There is real competition between Timothy and Garcia in the beginning, with Garcia somehow creating an entire pirate fleet (amazingly enough). However, all this tension immediately goes away when Garcia decides to go off to another kingdom to fight the church and dies. Literally one of the most interesting characters thrown away and killed in the most boring manner possible, never even meeting Roland!
    • Dream World: After beating the Church, Roland obtains the power of the dream world, which basically only serves to provide him with information that he didn't already know. So in this dreamworld, he can get more advanced textbooks than what he already had memorized (a tool for him to obtain more information basically). However, this dream world is dumb because it is its own universe and people that died are there for some reason? And apparently the author realized how dumb it is to throw away such an interesting character like Garcia away and brought her back to the dream world, but never provides closure on the fact that they are actually siblings in the real world. Seriously, they bring Garcia back in this dream world, but never reveal to her that she and Roland are siblings. She even comments herself that they both weirdly have grey hair, which is a clear sign they are related! Ultimately, it felt like the dream world aspect was too convoluted and I found myself skipping the sections in the dream world because it was boring and did not really affect anything in the main storyline.
    • No real enemy: Roland crushes every enemy he meets, which is cool until it's boring. The only time there is tension is when a rebelling region manages to create a primitive cannon that mimics Roland's cannon, however Roland has already upgraded to a new model and completely wipes the floor with them. Oof.
    • Large cast: They begin introducing a ridiculous amount of witches that I honestly found myself wondering "Who?" when they mentioned someone. It's not a big problem in the first 1000 or so chapters, but after a while they start to seriously blend together.
    • Bad ending: Yea, really bad ending that was okay but left a lot of loose ends untied.
[collapse]

Other thoughts: some other reviewers mentioned that the webnovel shoves communism down people's throats and as a communist myself, I don't see it. Roland mentions Deng Xiaoping a few times, but Deng is literally a capitalist reformer that undid a lot of what communist Mao did. Plus, the story takes place in the feudal era, with a transformation from a feudal mode of production to a capitalist mode of production. For f*cks sake, Roland even makes friends with merchant capitalists to spread his technology. It's literally a pro-capitalist story. Don't get me wrong, there are class conscious elements (like when the peasants kill their own lords in a really dope scene), but they are only class conscious to the extent that it is a bourgeois revolution. Think French Revolution rather than Russia/Chinese Revolution. <<less

A God tier novel

This is one of the very few long form novel that use logic and technology and I really appreciate the authors knowledge. This is what set him apart from others.

He is also brilliant in crafting multitude of characters all with distinct personality. Even the most insignificant side character like a Rat or an opposing noble have their own character arc, so you can see how easy it is for readers to differentiate characters even if we forgot the names. Roland himself is a static character, which is... more>> ok, because he change the world not the world change him.

The plot is meticulously crafted. The author already know the ending even before he start writing this magnun opus, because everthing tied neatly in the end. People complain about the ending only because there's a bit of an info dump the last 10-20 chapters, but actually it answer all the important questions. Of course personal preference of more waifu and stuff don't matter.

I would love to have more adventures inside the world (eg human demon relation) but no need Roland, so a sequel plox. <<less

For those who are new to the review page of this website, be aware that most people who rated this less than 3 stars haven't even read halfway through the story (this story is almost 1500 chapters long). Those people shouldn't write a review... sigh. Comment yes, review no. You have to read most of the story to give a proper review. This website doesn't have any other comment feature other than this review section so I guess it's the system that's flawed.

Alright, I will start my review and I... more>> will also openly compare/answer what other reviewers stated about this story.

PLOT

At the beginning of the story, it's all about nation building. How to increase population, develop technology, increase funds, dealing with political issues, and increasing military might. Roland, the MC, has knowledge from his previous world (ours) and he tried to apply it in his new life as a prince in his kingdom. Some people said this is interesting, some said this is generic and dull. However, the nation building plot, while still important until the end, was already not the main focus after half of the story.

Spoiler

On the later half, the plot shifted to discovery of the truth of their world--and guess what--the story actually focused on a great war between four intelligent civilizations: human, demon, underground, and sea-sky civilization. Humans were almost extinct after their previous engagement several hundred years ago, they were driven to the tip of the continent, and the next engagement is only less than 5 years away. Current living humans aren't aware of this since previous records were hidden/destroyed and the important people are busy with political issues.

[collapse]

The full plot of this story is very intriguing, full of mysteries and great discoveries. The matters with humans and witches are easily predicted, but the turn of events regarding their own world can't be predicted.

WORLD BUILDING

This story has a lot of adventure and in each adventure we know a bit more about their world. None of the human were aware of the full state of their world. Neither did the MC. This world has magic and only a few people can use it, with different properties. At the beginning, the world building seems simple, but later in the story it gets pretty complicated. The worlds and the magics were explained in lengthy manner. For those who hates technicalities, this could be boring to read since they will just skip the explanations. However to me this is actually a plus since there aren't that many authors who cares about explaining the world--the foundation of their story--to the readers. For example, most authors will just regard magic as the divination of gods and spirits. In this story, magic is explained from the origin, how it works, and what's the purpose of magic in their world. Of course, not everything will be explained from the front. Readers are persuaded to think with the MC as he goes with his experiments to discover the truth of his worlds. The method of introducing the world is superb because the author wrapped it with mysteries and unknown phenomenons.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

There are tons of characters in this story, and they have their own life to worry about. The world doesn't revolve around the MC, which makes it understandable that lots of characters come and go. Some people criticize that this makes a lot of characters forgettable and only few are given important roles in this story. This is true, but it's very realistic. In real life, do you think it's possible to keep close contact with all people you've met before? No. Only the currently closer and important ones in your life, and it may change as your life goes on.

What's important to take note is that the characters, even the forgettable ones, are actually developing. Some of them became more mature, getting married, or became more proficient on their job. Some changed their personalities due to circumstances. Witches actually develop their magic. All of these are explained in their own chapter in third person point of view.

What's disappointing about the character is actually the MC himself. He was an engineer in his previous world, but suddenly he is a master of politic, war, chemistry, art, economy, and phylosophy? Even his ability as engineer is overwhelmingly excellent. He knows the rough blueprint of cannons, rifles, diesel engines, ships, planes, and zeppelins. What's his specialty in his previous world? He also seems to be able to write several dozen pages of academic books and performance scripts in less than a week, all while managing his nation, drawing more blueprints of engines, and still managed to have afternoon naps! He knows too much and he does too much as humanly possible.

The fact that almost all of his subjects are trustworthy and hardworking is also not realistic. In real life, even in a small school organization there will always someone who slacks off. His subordinates are also very capable and intelligent, which is good, but in real life, where can we see this dream organization?

Romance is not the main focus of this novel. The MC has many witches--girls--by his side but most of them regards him as a good lord, not a love interest. There are some occasional romantic scenes though, but not excessive and it was kept on realistic manners. Some characters aside the MC, even the less important one, eventually have their own partners, which is nice to see.

STORY TELLING AND PACING

Explanations can be boring at some times, and incredibly confusing at other times. As I explained before, the author actually took the time to explain in detail and to me it's great. Some people think it's useless and detached from the story--but will you actually satisfied if the author shrugged the explanations with "that's just how it works"?

The pacing is actually pretty good. The world develops faster than what the MC predicted, forcing him to accelerate things and it makes the story more interesting. <<less

An amazing novel deserving 5 stars. There are some boring parts where the MC explains the working of machines and stuff, but the rest of the novel is so good that it more than compensates for these parts.

The main attractions in this novel are the amazing world building and the moments with feels. The moments with feels in every arc hit you really hard, and bring all the build up in that arc to a beautiful conclusion.

The ending felt a bit rushed. (I've read the raws)

Not a bad novel but the author has tried to incorporate far too much into his story. The "overarching enemy" is constantly changing till near the last part of the novel which is not really ideal. I will say that the kingdom building and secondary character interactions are quite good for this type of novel and there is a lot less of a plot armor for the MC in some cases. I feel like a lot of these enemies could have been fleshed out more and not rushed but it's... more>> bearable still. The plot itself also rushes quite a lot towards the end but I suppose the author was quickly getting bored writing at least there weren't too many loose ends.

Romance in the novel isn't the best I feel, that's mostly because the main female doesn't have much of a unique personality and ends up coming off as a Mary Sue. The secondary romance character is quite good which is strange but their relationship is up in the air for most of the story till the end. I didn't have too much of an issue since I like OTP's. <<less

This novel is not harem but it is supposed to be. Well I am not a fan of harem but the settings is really suitable for harem furthermore the female characters in this story is made for harem. Basically this is supposed to be harem but there's a big change because of the authors jelly wife interfering on his work (That's why almost all of the romance is canceled) which I really hate. The end is... meh, it feels that all happened so fast, the characters like witches, doesn’t have a “true end”, it’s like the author completely forget. I really would like extra chapters, to tell us what happened with Edith (my favorite), Iron Axe, Barov, Flummingbird, Wendy, Leaf, Scroll, Soraya, Echo, Lily, Mystery Moon, Joan, etc. He Witches of Sleeping Island and Quest Society. But right now we have nothing. We don’t know what happened to them. The arc of sleeping world was boring, the MC have a LOT of knowledge without a reason. I really hoped that the last chapters last at least the double to explain this but it isn’t. So, I highly recommend to you read his novel, but try to make your own final cause the author doesn’t explain that part xS

I just finished the whole novel and from start to end, I was not disappointed. Really loved the pacing of the story and even with so many characters in play, the writer was still able to make me care about and feel for so many of them. There are a lot of chapters but rarely did I find a single arc or chapter boring.

I highly recommend this to anyone. A must read

Someone said what "this is just another form of wishfulfillment type of web-novels" and I'm glad what this is it, because otherwise it would be super boring. So called wishfulfillment novels exist because they are interesting for us humans, they use our basic instincts to become addictive. If Release that Witch was just "realistic kingdom building" then it would be super boring novel, actually "realistic" parts weren't really interesting and it is good what most of the works was done by witches - this is how it should be. First... more>> hundred chapters or so was very interesting, there was a lot of conflicts and some intrigues with industrialisation and some science in between. But later this novel started to deviate from its initial path, fights and conflicts become more rare and most problems were solved way too fast, while we get a lot POV's of other characters, often those POVs were irrelevant to the main plot or just plain boring. There is not enough wishfulfillment in this novel and I prefer eastern type of novels precisely because it have it, instead of telling me plain boring story which is the case for vast majority of western literature. It would be more fun to see how MC conquer one country after another (like in Sengoku Rance, lol) while making progress in science and technology, instead here so far we have only three main "enemy sides" and nothing what couldn't be beaten (or rather one sidedly slaughtered) by already developed technology in case it would be expanded to army of 10 000 of soldiers or more. Also people mentioned what "how MC could know so much", you people think what everyone stop to learn something new after completing the school, or something? I know some people who have very broad knowledge in all basic science disciplines and if they were in place of MC then could do much more than he is, just because intelligent people don't talk with you about science doesn't mean what they have same level of knowledge as you are, MC here is just a little above average in basic knowledge and have a little above average memory, that is all.

Other than that there is no solid romance or some incredible plot twists in the novel, there is no amazing and unique characters so far either, so it is hard to say how good it is, maybe my opinion would be changed if I'll read to later chapters. <<less

he discovers that he has a dream ability after killing that magus that could absorb other people

[collapse]

Frankly, not bad. Like not bad if you do not try too hard to verify the scientific accuracy of most of the MC inventions and question how he has genius level memory skills (frankly I made up a canon in my mind that he memorized all this due to the pressures of the Chinese gaokao system). It is a breath of fresh air among all the god-damn cultivation/VR/gaming novels in the Chinese webnovel sphere.

Here, we get to see an interesting clash of science and magic, and frankly watch the author play out many of our "what if guns when against demons" and "what I will do to pwn the world if I go back to the past" fantasies. Don't think too much about it an just enjoy the ride.

The best part about this novel is the setting. I am a sucker of good settings and world-building. There is a sense of mystery in the world, as the author slowly peels apart what the world the MC inhabits actually looks like. As the chapter goes on, we get "oh shit", "oh damn" and "oh wow" moments as we too experience how the world the MC lives in is not what it seems. The greatest draw to me about this book the promised moment where bad-ass demons will finally invade and get screwed over by guns and artillery shells. Man, don't f*ck that up and I will always be reading this book.

The demerits though, are the authors conflicting emotions on whether to make this novel a harem or a pure romance story. You could see it in the chapters about MC relations with Anna and Nightingale. Like, come on, I am rooting for a pure romance story but make up your mind damn it.

Another issue I have is that the author could have done a bit more to explore the demerits of industrialization. I know I am expecting too much out of a webnovel but it is wholely possible for the author to have talked about how this transformation to industrialization may be affecting the land and the environment as a whole. If he could do that, then.......

All in all, recommended for those who are sick of typical big-d*ck MC pwning n00bs and need something fresh. <<less
