Unrivaled Tang Sect

The legend of the continent, the battle that brought fame; the Sacred Phoenix Lady, the Windfire Meteor Godrealm saber-art; the pair that ascend and fuse, the golden sun and the blue moon, the fury of the crashing thunder. There is no magic, no battle qi, nor any martial arts in this land. However, there are martial spirits. Ten thousand years have passed since the founding of the Tang Sect on the Douluo continent, and it has declined. A new, proud generation of heaven’s chosen has been born. Can the new generation of Shrek’s Seven Devils rally the Tang Sect and once more compose the song of the Unrivaled Tang Sect?

A million-year-old spirit beast, a sacred deathgod that holds the sun, the moon, and the stars in his hands, and a brand new spirit tool system which caused the fall of the Tang sect. One miracle shall occur after another.

Can the Tang Sect’s hidden weapons rally the winds, and can the glory of the Tang Sect ascend once more? All of this will be continued in the second installment of Douluo Dalu—The Unrivaled Tang Sect!

Very good story.. Lots of interesting stuff and kudos to author to introduce spirit weapons and how it affected the continent. One problem with MC is toooooo much love emotion.. Story mostly has he dies for her and she dies for him. MC plays sympathy card with all the girls he meet.

It would have been better to have waited months than to have these tr*sh TJSS godspeed endings.

This novel was great but the rushed ending made the ENTIRE novel seem like just a prequel. Not a stand-alone novel.

Although I did see it coming, this novel just had so much potential and it fcking frustrated the hell outta me

I expect the 'god of emotions' TJSS to know the mixed feelings his 8yrold readers have when reading these blissful endings. Sooo.. Good job man, job well done. This ending made me grow up!... more>> ? <<less

While this should be a really good story its flaws are too much for me to give it a good review. I'll get the bad out of the way first. While the base is good, the author continuously shoots himself in the foot throughout the course of the story. I can think of 6 points in the series where the author creates an incredibly contrived or infuriatingly dumb situation to create tension or loss. I don't think I've ever been mad at a story or characters as I have at... more>> this one. It's hard to watch one of my favorite series go to utter sh*t in front of my eyes and I don't wish that on anyone else. Thankfully the bad stuff doesn't really kick in until just before halfway through the series.

That said, the positives (i.e. Almost everything else)

Characters: As in all of this author's series, the characters are all well developed, including the side characters who get their own moments to shine and develop. Dialogue feels natural and characters can actually be funny. On a side note there are badass female characters too, and relationships don't feel one sided as is often seen in these sorts of novels.

Cultivation: As in DD1, the cultivation system is addicting to read. It's a blend of soul power collection and refinement punctuated by regular bottlenecks that are broken through by going and hunting strong soul beasts for their abilities. These abilities they get from the soul beast are what define their growth path and moveset. It feels satisfying and makes each character so unique. Everyone's strength is based on a totem beast or item that they inherit from their parents as well as a bit of power from each soul beast they've hunted for breaking through. So you can have an enemy show up whose martial soul is a poisonous toad who's hunted a spitting cobra for their third skill and can now spit a poisonous cloud at their enemies.

Pacing: The characters are pretty consistently challenged and have enough reasonable reasons to rely on to overcome their challenges. It's kind of funny because most of the frustrating situations I mentioned don't have a big effect on the pacing of the novel. They change the way things work out, but usually don't quicken or slow down what the characters are actually able to do. Which kind of makes them even more frustrating because they don't matter, but also a little easier to overlook because you can try to forget they ever happened.

Magic: There's something about this series that can create these magical moments where I found myself with a s*upid grin plastered over my face. Moments where character's chemistry just clicks perfectly, or where something cool is discovered, or a character gets to show off their perfect side and you're filled with a longing to be able to see it and admire yourself. I cannot think of many Xianxia series where this can be said so consider it high praise.

I noticed a couple of reviews comparing it to DD1 and calling this series derivative. There's similarities but I think they're being disingenuous in their comments. There's a very different focus in this series whether it's the modernization of the entire world, a new look at conservationism vs selfishness, or a number of new things that come up related to cultivation which I can't go into.

This series has put me through some of the highest highs but also the lowest low I've ever had where I had to put it aside and spent the entire evening cursing the characters, the situation, and the author up and down. Read at your own peril <<less

I'm going to assume that whomever reads this has also read Douluo Dalu.

This sequel is set 10, 000 years into the future of the original DD, and many things have changed. It seems a great deal of attention is put into making this more of a story-inspired-by than direct-sequel-of DD. And the author throws a lot of things into this sequel:

There is technology, mecha, mystical spellcasting, military affairs, royal power struggles, and brief flashes of paedophilia. It has everything. The one thing it doesn't have is a cross-dimensional rebirth.

Yes, you... more>> read that right.

There is one chapter that apparently had been removed (self-censored, perhaps?) from the original text, and in it, there's a chapter-long description of paedo event. It's the grown woman vs. 12 year old boy type, and it struck me as being odd that this chapter was totally removed -- to mean not even re-written or retconned -- but then subsequent chapters about the MC, Huo Yuhao, a Chinese-ish character, sent into a foreign nation to steal their industrial and military technology, doesn't get censored. One would think considering the country of publication, this issue hits a little close to home, and someone would want to... ahem... not draw attention to it.

Also, the original DD covered a timeline between childhood and full-on adulthood, and moves quickly across that time range. The sequel seems to be focused mostly during adolescent teen years. Halfway through it, the MC is still basically a teenager.

And, as is usual with most CN webnovels, the girls and women in the story aren't given much to do, other than be arm candy and occasionally bursting out to win inconsequential battles.

The plotlines in this story, at least to ch. 324, seems to be revolving around mostly the school years and multiple gladiator-styled competitions.

My guess is that if you like the original DD, you're likely to equally enjoy this, if you don't mind it being a little 'busy.' Personally, I believe the best way to enjoy this story is by not having read the original DD first.

Enjoy! <<less

The story itself is pretty good and the writing style too.

But I can only give it a 3/5 because of following reasons:

  1. Questionable moral decisions of the MC: Hue Yuhao is not someone ruthless who kills everyone for gains, but sometimes he still does decisions which are in my opinion not morally correct, especially in duels/competitions.
  2. Perfect chinese charater: In every single aspect Hue Yuhao is the absolut best at his age group at one point. This also includes his feelings, which are perfect for a chinese charater. His friends are obviously all peak genius too.
  3. Predictability: You know the outcome of most things before they even started. This doesn't only include battles. This is also because of the perfect MC character.

Sometimes good, sometimes too tiring to read. At first, I like the pacing of the story, and honestly liked the MC of this than the MC of the prequel since he's got more emotions on him (he's a TOTAL crybaby. It's kind'a irritating sometimes).

The good side is that this sequel invested in the emotional parts, and I like that he focused on that aspect so as to make the characters more lifelike. Other characters also have more depth.

But the bad side is, the author's narration is just too redundant that's... more>> why it's so tiring to read. Another one is that since the MC got together with the FL, the story just focused on the romance part so much that it's getting too cheesy. The other characters were overshadowed by the romance and lost the earlier depth the author created. Seems like he lost interest in writing the others and just wanted the MC to progress and completely dominate the platform. And the FL is also losing her interesting quality from the start of the story. I like her badass attitude before, but she just became a plain vanilla girl with the childish and stubborn package that I've read/watched before.

Spoiler

Tang San is a jerk. What father is he to butcher his own daughter's lovelife LOL. Even if he cares for his daughter, he doesn't have the right to control another's life just to test his future son-in-law. It's becoming abusive. Not interesting. I feel sorry for Wang Qui'er since MC is a jerk to her too.

[collapse]

Edit:

So until the end, it's just the MC's obsession to the FL. The author just abandoned the other characters. <<less

Have to say, I do like this book. Thank you for translating it..

But : 1. The main character has to go through so much suffering that a usual person would go crazy mad by the end. Not sure how he can still hold on. And somebody still thinks it is not enough and has to ask him to go through trails. I do not think that even Tang Sang has to deal with so much angst.

2. It feels like every one is pushing him to get better constantly cos they... more>> want to use him to protect themselves and others. Why is that only this one person has to be pushed so much with no air to breath? At least Tang Sang was doing it to resurrect Xia Wu and his mother.

3. Too many women that attracted to him. Just too much.

4. In the end I am glad am reading it but it feels that the book has too much info, too much angst and too much sorrow and some things do do not make sense.

Will recommend to read it though, just do not expect to read it in one go. Stop and do something else, then come back. <<less

This is my first time review just to share, I have read all the versions of soul land (yes fan boi asf)

A lot of people criticise shrek academy during the tournament arc about how they helped themselves and screamed shrek's pride but to be fair to them, I'm sure many of the other academies did some underhanded method as well and we can't completely blame the 7 monsters for what they did in trying to help their academy gain more recognition, I mean wouldn't you? Anything goes in the... more>> cultivation as long you are not caught. An example i'd bring up is like naruto during his initial test, sasuke used his sharingan to copy whoever he was looking to get the answers, gaara used his sand eye thingy to get answers. The point I'm trying to make is whether ninja or fighter or whatever when our characters grow up they will be expected to use all sorts of tricks which can be considered dirty and unfair but hey that's life, deal with it.

The second version I feel that people are criticising too heavily on the romance as I would agree being a bit out of hand but when can you expect from teenagers or young adults? The audience is teenager-young adults. Although I do agree it basically became a romance sh*t show as Tang san was being a overly protective father of wutong but what'd you expect? She's is his daughter lmao and not just any daughter, the daughter of a God. Of course whoever his son-in-law had to be tested very harshly but I believe any father who wants to entrust his daughter to a man would do so as well.

In conclusion I feel that soul land 2 has generally improved from the previous one as we get more in depth about the fights, stealth missions and of course our standard overly powered protagonist <----Anyone complaining about YuHao having 2 martial souls or having many overpowered creatures becoming his ring gorget that tang san inherited 2 first class god powers

Theres no perfect story, if you are looking to nitpick, you will definitely not enjoy the story, I read soul land 2 and all the others because I enjoy reading about it though I also have various complaints i'd like to share I'm gonna take a nap and maybe edit it? <<less

Downgrade from DD1, wasting my time.

It started great until the romance hit. It was totally bul*sh**

Spoiler

Wtf about the ML's child and about juzi 'just borrowed some seed' to create a child??? And they totally ok with that?? And even Tang San treat that as a joke??

And the poor wang qiu er, really can't say anymore.

Tang san turned to be the greatest jerk here. He created all the soap operas only to test his son-to be -in law

[collapse]

And the main reason for ML to be strong AKA revenge all being thrown to the air at the end chapter.

Spoiler

With all good heart and benevolent, ML just forgave everyone. Even the main culprit are already dead 5 years prior so he can't do anything to her and choose to do nothing. It's just erase the main porpose of the story.

Revenge by doing nothing -_-

I would give the second book in the Soul Land series a rating of around 4.5 stars when compared to the author's first book, Soul Land (Douluo Dalu). One of the aspects I particularly enjoyed was the main character's growth and development throughout the story. Yuhao's transformation from a zero to a hero was captivating, showcasing his resilience and genuine compassion.

However, there were certain parts of the book that involved the protagonist from the first series, a character I hold very dear, and I wasn't quite satisfied with how he... more>> was portrayed in this second series. The choices he made and his behavior felt shallow, selfish, and even childish, despite the explanation provided at the end of the book. As his die-hard fan, I was disappointed to see this deviation from his original portrayal.

Moreover, I have some reservations about Yuhao's other half. Instead of being a source of blessing, she seemed more like a harbinger of disaster for poor Yuhao. I struggled to see any positive influence she brought into his life. In contrast, the other devoted girl who is willing to die for him appears to be a better partner and more deserving of his love. The dismissive explanation about this wonderful girl at the end of the book also left me feeling unhappy and even saddened, as if she was conveniently erased from the picture. It was quite perplexing why the author chose to include this unnecessary information. In my view, it would have been better to leave it out, as the story had already reached a suitable closure without it.

For now, I've decided to take a break from this series, but I do plan to return for the next book when I feel ready. I've heard that the protagonist from the first book will also appear in the third book, and I hope the author does justice to that character in the upcoming installment. It's disheartening to witness him acting so out of character in this current book. Overall, I have mixed feelings about The Unrivalled Tang Sect, but I remain hopeful for the future of the series.

First of all, I have to say that I absolutely adore this author's writing style, albeit being a little dog-blooded sometimes.

Commenting about the story, this is placed ten thousands of years after Tang San's generation and the story depicts vividly the changes that could happen in the world with the time.

It is always essential to keep up with the times.

And speaking of Huo Yuhao, his journey to the top was both miserable and exciting and I quite liked his character, for he was not perfect and it made him all... more>> the more relatable and likable.

All in all, it was an enjoyable read, but I just have to say that I love this world the author has created, it is magnificent.

ALSO!

Spoiler

Tang San is such a sadistic father-in-law. Half of the time I was cursing the fellow, he was so villainous. (Saying this with all the fondness I have I adore Tang San) But he is such a jerk!

Series starts out great, but then romance happens.

The author seems to be talented at writing emotions, but unfortunately he seems to lack any talent at writing characters who would warrant such emotions.

Psychos, psychos everywhere.

... more>> And yet, for some inexplicable reason other characters develop feelings for these psychos. Then they just take their abuse or watch while the psychos are abusing others.

Alternatively they fall in love with the cursed devil-spawn of some divine psycho and just pretend it is all worth it.

Ever seen a sequel eventually turn out so bad that it drags the original down with it? This work not only works toward destroying its own main character, it even manages to turn the previous main character into a terrible excuse for a sentient being.

I should have stopped reading after the first 200 chapters before they turned the story into a shitty dating show. Sadly, I continued reading, because I liked the main character. Turns out my sympathies for the main character actually make the following chapters only worse.

Eventually, I had to resign myself to put down the series after one of the cherished psychos stole some sperm from an unconscious person as a sign of affection. Screw that. Screw all of that.

The story is interesting, but the characters and their relationships have become insufferable.

Not worth it. <<less

Douluo Dalu 2, so this novel is a sequel to the first Douluo Dalu. Although you can probably read this without reading the first one, I highly suggest that you read the prequel.

It's been a long time since I read Douluo Dalu, it was the very first few chinese novels I've read. Since then I've read several of TJSS works like HJC, CoL, and SFA. His works have a certain quality and it's quite consistent across the board like great side characters development, good battle scene, and systematic power system.

It's... more>> lovely, and the fact that this novel is a continuous sequel, which rarely happened, made the world building an extensive story spanning ten thousand years.

So after a long time I decided to read Unrivaled Tang Sect when I see the completed tag when I was browsing for something new to read. The story starts around 10k years after the first novel and a new continent (Sun Moon) collided with the Douluo continent 4k years ago, the characters from the previous story will appear from time to time, but they can't affect anything since it's practically impossible to do so.

With that premise, we then follow the MC, Huo Yuhao. His background is amazing, but his start is typical. Bullied, not talented, orphan seeking revenge, then somehow got a lucky heavenly break that propel him forward. The MC is on the good side, very loyal, but way too soft. He's just too kind for his own good and too emotional when it involved someone important to him, It made for some frustrating moments when reading.

Side characters are good, well developed, that includes the villain. No harem here, but the MC got a lot of bees around him.

the story pace is quite slow, but it's pretty enjoyable. The battle system, just like the first novel is well described with a deep history to it. The only new thing is soul tools, which is a GREAT addition, BUT toward the end it f*cks the power system up to make for a strong enemy. If I have to describe it, it feels like that the first novel is in the medieval era, while soul tools feel like the modern era with guns and artillery cannons, except that toward the end we're seeing exo-skeletons, iron man, and energy weapons. It totally screws the balance of the story that made me wonder on why would the countries let someone develop that for 4000 years without stopping them or matching them.

the battle are well described, but at some moments it's lengthy. Also the fact that there are tons of tournaments doesn't help. So if you find that is is tiring, especially during tournaments, just skip read them.

The ending is quite meh... I'm simply not satisfied, not enough closure.

Characters (5/5)

Side characters (5/5)

Story (4/5)

Battle (4/5)

Ending (2/5)

Total score 4 stars

Overall it's an enjoyable read, there are some annoyances that made you question the decision made, but read a few chapters ahead and it'll be all fine. The ending is not what I'd say ideal, but hey, this story got a sequel. Recommended! <<less

It's a very good story. I was glad to meet the DD's world once more and things have changed too. There are soul tools now!

Shrek academy is powerful and deeply respected.

The MC has a good reason to be powerful. He grows as the story advances.

... more>> The big conflict in the story is exciting and very logical.

I generally enjoyed the story.

But I have some complaints :

-MC has more "lucky" encounters than talent from my point of view.

-too much unnecessary drama in his love life. Things happen and I ask myself "why?". It feels unnatural.

-he is a soul engineer but that isn't developed much. It could have been more interesting if the MC focused more on that.

A vefy gold read but not a masterpiece. <<less

Personal my favourite Duoluo Dalu, is the best one mabye not but its the one I find the most enjoyable to read.

Likes:

Main Character Personality: Huo Yuhao out of all the Protags of Duoluo Dalu is my favourite. He has the power of leadership and level headiness the protagonists all share but he a bit more unstable and emotion compared to the others because early maturity and makes him feel more human. Also I like how he is not related to any other of the main characters.

Huo Yuhao Powers: I like... more>> the power system of Duoluo Dalu alot and the powers of the main characters are some of my favourite. While I enjoy the Grass and Smash combination that Tang san and Tang Wulin share I like Huo Yuhao powers the most. Huo Yuhao uses Ice and Spirit power which he uses to great effect with illusions, mass area debuffs, Fezzeing and exploading Ice and so much fan stuff.

Main Duo: Going Keep this short my Favourite Couple of Duoluo Dalu

World Building: I enjoyed new and old placing reintroducing in the new age of Soul Land 2 and what is shown and explored.

Enemy: The enemy aren't the best ones you will ever see in a story but they are good and enjoyable.

Dislikes:

Mostly left out side characters: Beside a few side characters most feel not forgotten but not used.

Soul Tool Creation Sections: Section of the story where Soul Tool are created are not that great. They are mainly just lengths of time where characters work but nothing really happen. Soul land 3 does a lot better job with its main character side gig as each time blacksmithing happens it feels a lot more exciting. <<less
