One the best Chinese novels I have ever read, and that is after reading a fan translation. With all the praise this author gets for her verbosity from her Chinese readers, I can't even imagine how much we are missing out, but it's still the best story I have come across in a LONG time.
Beautifully developed characters, a vibrant well explained and well-constructed world, beautiful dialogues and an PLOT that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
And a beautiful beautiful romance that will wreck you!
Do not hesitate, do not shy away. This is the best of the best this Genre has to offer.
Don't miss out.

I first watched the drama and then I decided to read the novel to have a better understanding of the story. They complete each other in my opinion, some things differ but the storyline, the way the author developed the characters and the story couldn’t be better. Just I would have liked to know what his brother thought about their love story and if they decided to forgive each other

Guys, I tell you now that this will forever remain one of the best BL novels in your memory after you read it. It's seriously one of the greatest literary masterpieces I've come across in web novels, on a whole league of it's own with it's only similar counterparts being The Legendary Master's Wife and Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil.

The story, world, and characters are immensely rich and dripping with attraction. Seriously, the way things work out in this novel really shows how much thought... more>> and effort the author put into designing this story. There's flashbacks of flashbacks, but it's not done in a way that feels like it's cleaning up after bad storytelling; rather, it's done ingeniously and makes you crave for more. I'm not one to like having the main story getting cut at parts, but seriously this is brilliant. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, comes back full circle.

I'll say it starts of slowly and a little confusing. However, its enjoyment increases EXPONENTIALLY as the author unveils their masterful story weaving as we get further into the story. Wei Wuxian is one of my fav MCs of all time, and Lan Wangji one of my favourite MLs. The MC is strong and humorous, and he seems almost like a spoiled young master, but boy oh boy. The ML is strong and overbearing but at the same time not; he wants to keep MC to himself but he lets him fly, protecting him and catching him if he falls.

I don't even know, guys. I read this a while ago but ugh, it has such a lasting impression on me. By the way, it also has a manga adaptation. <<less

This was my first ever BL. It was a great introduction to BL in that it had everything that hooked me, great story, awesome wholesome characters, (and side characters who made me feel like they all just needed separate arcs to keep telling their stories.) Awesome translation (Thank you translators) and a happy ending (cries in BL heaven)

It was a terrible introduction in that I don't think I'll find a better book than this. Some have come close but none can go hand in hand.

Firstly, I am sorry about my english.

Secondly, I am fond of this novel! I really appreciate the characters, all of them are well described. I like the way how the story begins and finishes. I laughed a lot and I also cried a lot. Plus the plot is incredible!

The love between the ML and the MC is amazing! I am so jealous of the MC I would like to have someone as Lan WangJi.

Only one complaint... Why aren't there more chapters?!?

This novel has a web series, manga (called manhua), anime, audio drama... Yes, its that good.

Excellent story and characters. The translations are great as usual by the Exiled Rebels group.

... more>> I loved the younger generation especially Jin Ling. The story has so many tragic elements but does not come across as melodramatic at all. There's no angsty description when something bad happens.

Its a novel where the author shows the reader what happens.

I would love to know what happened to Wei Ying's soul in those 10+ years. But on second thoughts, its better if he doesn't remember.

I love the fact that unlike in the web series, the author doesn't white wash what Wei Ying does in the past. After all, even the most powerful person can't avoid accidents.

The Yi city arc is so sad.....

This novel is the slap in the face to those who says Yaoi/BL novel/manga is tr*sh. I was soo amazed by the clever writing of the author. The character she has created and their role in each and every plot she created is soo amazing. This is not your typical novel where you can get good or bad vibes about characters. In the end you will know the characters action is right in their own setting. This novel blew my mind away and heartache; I cried many times.

The live-action adaption... more>> and anime has got us all fans hyped up (and I am not getting over them soon). But I gotta admit no matter what reading this Novel is the greatest joy in my life. To international fans EXR team has done such favour by bringing us this amazing master piece; we are very very grateful to you all. <<less

This is not a light read. Look at all those tags. This is a rollercoaster novel. You'll laugh, cry, hate, love, be frustrated and horrified (by the tragic experiences of the characters).

You will hate some characters but in the end you'll ask yourself: do they really deserve hate?

Because everyone is a victim of their own circumstances. Of course, they could have chosen to do things differently. However, the path they chose is what's presented in this story and these paths interconnected and like dominoes caused a cause and effect that... more>> brought forth misery, grief, tragedy, unnecessary deaths, and second chance.

I actually go for fluffy light reads since I want to forget my own life's boring hell but this novel was very interesting when I started reading it so without noticing I have reached the end already. Thank you author for creating this story and thank you translator for sharing this with us.

*People complaining about the wrting style:

ehhh... Are you new to reading? Flashback is a very old technique used in storytelling. The author's intention here is to put hints here and there and present us with the present events while the character reminisces the past through flashbacks (read carefully, the flashbacks' is when Wei Ying reminisces the past) . Through this flashbacks we get to understand why such things are happening right now or that things aren't what they seem to be at all. Confusing? Read with comprehension. It's understandable that you will have questions since you are at the beginning of the story. Continue reading and hold your questions. You will get your answers as you dive deeper through the story. <<less

There are absolutely no words that can describe how strongly I feel about this novel.

It's a piece of art and I loved every second of it.

It had the thrill and excitement and it had the heartbreak and the laughter, it's a story to remember. The two leads are amazing and cute and I just love them so much !

The translation is done beautifully which is something to appreciate, so I'm very thankful for the translators.

(and it's not just a bl story)

I don't even know how to begin this review.

The story is so amazing. It has it all. The action, the drama, the romance. I have lost count of the times I genuinely cried while reading this book.

Wei Ying is such a relatable character. He worked hard to protect to protect his loved ones but in the end, not only did he failed but was instead condemned as a villain. Despite this he wasn't bothered but was instead content. He never even tried to save his reputation once he came back... more>> to life. Such level of maturity shoes his growth and progress and it's a very beautiful journey.

One thing that I've always wanted to see in this series though is Lan Zhan's perspective throughout the story. I get to see a glimpse of it on that incense burner side story (lol the first one. That was so steamy btw) but I've always want more.

nevertheless, it was a very read. There's a good reason why this novel is so popular so kudos to you Miss Mo Xiang Tong Xiu!! <<less

This particular novel opened a whole new world for me. The story is beautiful. A must read!

The way we get connected to a character, their emotions and feelings, the way we feel hatred for the people who have wronged the other people, it is a well written story. You feel connected if you understand what is happening.

The way it makes us question what is right what is wrong- everything is beautiful.

It's an incredible story with well rounded and developed characters that just sucks you in. I especially love the relationship between the main characs, especially in the extras. It is definitely worth a read and even those that don't like BL should at least watch the drama adaptation!

One grip I have with the story tho is its flow, the author likes to have flashback chapters placed at cliffhangers. While it does provide the needed context and information for the next scene, it is still immensely frustrating, especially at one particular... more>> cliffhanger. <<less

Masterpiece. The plot is intricate, there are several sub-plots and plenty of unexpected plot twists, a gallery of well-rounded characters.

The protagonist: is an adorable chatterbox with ADHD and kindness and love to spare who accidentally becomes the founder of demonic cultivation and becomes a scapegoat for many. He's a genius cultivator but his power ends up being too tricky even for him. One of the best things is that he's really strong and smart on his own, so the main couple is well-matched.

The love interest: is a total tsundere, a... more>> total softie and mama boy. He's like Star Trek's Mr. Spock. Educated so rigidly and so emotionally constipated that the only one who can crack his surface is a force of nature (the protagonist).

The past: the rich and engaging plot is alternated by flashbacks which give much needed insight in the characters' personalities, relationships and motives. Do NOT skip any line of the flashbacks, 1) they're so interesting why would you skip them and 2) they'll make you cry and laugh and hate and blush.

Other aspects are the great world-building (not gamer-like as in other historical BL novels), beautiful imagery, peaceful scenes, action-packed fights, comedy and zombie galore. Some horror scenes will haunt you at night, the array of monsters is impressive and well-balanced in comparison the fluffy and comedic scenes. Cliffhangers abound, turning the novel into a real page-turner.

This is a classic of BL Wuxia now, always worth re-reading. <<less

I watched the anime first since I heard the names and story could get confusing and boy am I glad I did. It really piques your interest, and although it is told in a different order, it is still very faithful to the novel (except for the BL aspects... so far haha). It allowed me to get really clear imagery of who was who and what was happening. And after you have got all of that down--strap yourself in, because you're in for a helluva ride.

The... more>> author would foreshadow and have many things working in the background so that when it was finally revealed, it was like a splash of cold water and everything made sense. There were barely any loopholes, and you could see how much effort was put into the planning and pacing of the story. I had no idea what cultivation was when I started, but I could write an essay on it right now lmao.

This novel is more plot heavy compared to the romance. Only slight caveat for me was aspects of the romance. Their relationship was hella cute, and I super shipped them at the end. But some parts were pretty farfetched like

Also it's really clear on the uke/seme distinction and the whole seme must protect the uke thing. I'm usually not a huge fan, but it worked out that it really fit with the MC's character.

Character development was amazing. Each person stuck to their beliefs despite the consequences. I really admired that, especially the main character. Wei Wuxian was extremely like-able, and I could see why Lan WangJi couldn't keep his eyes off him. I found it hilarious each time WeiWuxian would say twenty words to Lan WangJi's one lmao. Not even. Mn isn't even a word haha. But even small interactions such as that really gave you insight on the characters and their relationships. I have cried, laughed, and really felt like I knew these characters. I'm sad that it's over but overwhelmingly glad I decided to read this. Definitely recommended. Time to go read the manhua lmao. <<less

This is perhaps one of the most compelling romances I have ever read. I actually read it twice. And watched the anime. And read the available chapters of the manga. That should give you an idea of how passionate I am about this novel.

The story is presented in a nonlinear fashion, with the plot being interspersed with events from the past. This serves to deepen the reader's understanding of the characters, the relationships between them, and the events which shaped them. As a result, the reader's perspective is gradually changed... more>> as the plot progresses.

The book thoroughly explores our relationship with the past. Can we truly leave the past behind? Should we? The characters are both trapped and strengthened by past events.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. Just avoid the "bonus" chapters. <<less

This novel was written really well! I loved every chapter!

Pros (what I love) :

    • I love the MC personality. He loves to fool around and joke regardless of the situation. He doesn't like the strict rules to cultivation and you it makes him so much more relatable. Although he jokes around and flirt a lot, he is actually very skilled, witty, clever, and the kindest considerate soul out there. Also, he is extremely thick-skinned to the point that it makes other people speechless. The MC adds a lot of comedy to the novel. His character made me love the novel so much!
    • I love the ML. His character does seem quiet, stern, and aloof but he spoils the MC is the cutest way. He is not the classic playful, strong-willed ML. He is very considerate and very much in love with the MC. He really puts up with the MC. He dotes on the MC a lot. They suit each other so well despite almost being total opposite haha. Romance was so cuteeeee.
    • The romance was not rushed. It was so gradual and natural you could hardly pinpoint where the love happens. Which is good, instead of the how the ML or MC falls in love within like 10 chapters. The ML and MC are so cute I can't explain in words how much I love reading them interact. The MC talks a lot so it makes up for the ML quietness. You won't regret reading this novel. Romance is A+.
    • The mystery was very interesting! It shows how smart and clever the MC is when he is faced with a situation. Instead of a bunch of mysteries in the novel, the mysteries the MC encounters all connect to the next one and lead up to the final culprit. It was a fun rollercoaster ride!
    • There is a huge misunderstanding in the novel and that keeps you on your toes. You just have to keep on reading because the misunderstanding makes you crave for the truth to be revealed.

      The MC has a huge hero complex lmao. He keeps secret and the truth to himself for a good reason but in return everyone sees his action as arrogant, foolish, and a villain. He does accidentally kill people due to his loss of control over his dark arts but you honestly can't blame him (his sister killed in front of him & made a powerful weapon). He only turned to dark arts because he gave away his cultivation core to his brother, Jiang Cheng, who lost his cultivation core (destroyed in a fight) and was pushed down a cliff of dark miasma by an enemy which left him no choice but to learn dark arts to survive. He lost his core so he could not learn the righteous cultivation again.

Cons (what I wanted - my personal feelings)

    • I wish there was more closure between the MC and his brother Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng extremely hate the MC and after the misunderstanding has been resolved there should've been more closure to their extreme hate/love relationship
    • I wish the MC reputation could've been restored to the whole world. It was more like the cultivations sect and his friends know the truth. But I don't remember if it was ever announced to the world that he wasn't what the world thinks

What I will complain is I want more of mystery cases for them to solve together, or even those juniors are okay XD

This was the book that brought me to wn, c/k/jn. I knew jpn light novel, but never had the enthusiasm to read daily.

First and foremost I must say it's a great work by MXTX, probably the best of all the three novels she has written, not because of the fact that this is completely flawless or something, because there's always some drawbacks and always room for improvement but because of how she has dealt with the entire work from the plot to the characters and everything very very beautifully done.I'm quite sure that as stated by other fellow reviewer's most of the people enter this fandom by keeping a tag in mind... more>> about BL, but but please even if you have entered by keeping this thought in mind no issues because I bet you won't regret it either way whether your a fan of BL or not it's a masterpiece, it's not like any BL work in which there is no room for affectionate growth, they are like catching sight of each other and boom ! Love blossoms and all, no no this work is a slow burn that will leave you enchanted and mesmerised, a beautiful growth of feelings and understanding takes place and eventually they fall in love. The adventure part is amazing with how the theme unfolds and than the solving of the mystery along with various adventures ranging from shameless and humorous acts to loving and sweet moments to pain and heartbreak and ofcourse the raising of kids? haha. It's a combination of everything a reader wants an intriguing story line that always keeps you gripped tightly and not wanting to leave your laptop even for a sec.. you want to keep on reading and reading.. seriously I must say I was so engrossed in reading this that I didn't even realised how much time has passed. The novel is hilarious from the time you start reading the first chapter, the main protagonist Wei Wuxian is considered shameless in his previous life, he has become even more shameless of a brat in his new body for the owner of the body considered as a lunatic, there's no boundations for Wei Wuxian to behave he keeps on shamelessly sprouting non sense which I must say gives us readers second hand embarrassment, but ofcourse he won't stop, would he? Removing the shameless part, his personality is slowly unveiled as a character whose quite intelligent, observant, kind, energetic, believes in helping others around him strangers and friends alike, is quite loyal, self -sacrificing who puts the well being of others infront of him and ofcourse a loud brat ! The story follows the current timeline as well as the flashbacks which makes it easier to understand the events took place in the protagonists previous life and gives a view of the current state of relations he has with the other people in this current timeline, although the first few flashbacks would make you laugh and all but than ofcourse a story without pain would be incomplete.. than you see how the events of war leading to the the destruction of the happy and merry environment, making all the adolescent cultivators to grow up too fast and shoulder the burdens of their respective sects. All the sects pay a heavy price to win the war ofcourse Jiang sect paying the highest loss, which was the extermination of the entire clan excluding only Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli. After the war is over you think that things have started to get better but that's only for a small period of time after which everything went downhill leading to the death of Wei Wuxian. The flashbacks keep on appearing in which we will understand the emotional and psychological trauma of the protagonist, but he also portrays a trait of searching every thing positive in the grievous of situations. Ofcourse without introducing Lan Wanji, this review would be incomplete, at first he has being shown as a cold, aloof protagonist whose distant from all the kids of his age, but slowly and slowly you get to know more about him and the way he thinks and acts, although not being in a very great start they first met, Lan wanji eventually starts respecting Wei Wuxian and seeing him in a new light, ofcourse though most of the counters in which Wei Wuxian will annoy him in the end haha, but there are hints given that can gives us an idea about how Lan Wanji views Wei Ying although our poor thick faced Wei Wuxian is oblivious to the hints, since he's more busy causing mischief and flirting with ladies although he's a biggest naive when it comes to actual love scenario ?. It shows how Lan Wanji tries his best to save Wei Wuxian and to clear out the misunderstandings that keeps piling up between them but to no vain as in the end Wei Wuxian still loses his life, leaving LAN Wanji in a state of despair. The flashbacks have more of a painful side if we compared to the proportion of the current timeline, but nevertheless the main important thing is that they get a happy ending and the most important thing that, "Man they are married and living Happily"!

If overall summarisation of this story needs to be done than its a story about every single emotions and conflicts a person goes through from innocence to arrogance to despair to jealousy, learning from mistakes and maturing and everything has being portrayed so well. It teaches us so many things and most importantly the fact that we are all humans and we are all tainted by the earthly attachments, nobody is perfect and flawless, but embracing the fact and working on it, to learn from mistakes is more important. All the characters aside from the main pair are also very well portrayed and as you finish the story you cannot put a finger to who the villian is because the way in which MXTX has presented makes us have a deep analysis of how humans work, how the perspective and actions of individuals always have some unexplained story leading to their current state. Love is a beautiful thing, although it's a love story surely but the main part is not only about the love between the main pairing, it's about healthy relationships between friends, families, the understanding, loyalty and trust, the betrayal as well, Love is a big part but at the same time can be considered as a small part as well that governs this story, cause there are more greater elements which are taught to us by the story. Now if we talk about the main couple, the best thing I like about the Semes and Ukes of MXTX is that all of them are independent and have strong bases of their own, unlike how semes are being portrayed as always being shielding their Ukes and like typical definition of a seme and Ukes always crying and that softy.. man really I will be honest no offence but those all not my type... As for MXTX all of them are strong, righteous with their own ideologies, they are all able to support themselves very well and together they pose a great team for their opponents, everything is very well balanced which brings it a more beautiful and captivating story. Ofcourse our Main couple, "WANGXIAN" are beautiful, the loyalty, trust and understanding they have on each other makes it heart warming and sweet and even more beautiful before the intimacy starts in the extras. As always the author won't disappoint you because there's some good amount of smut too in the extras?, haha and you got to see that just as our main couple is unique, their love making is all the way more unique! Man I ranted so much.. Sorry but this is a must read novel and I'm 100% sure that this isn't disappoint you !

And my personal choice this is the best work of MXTX!
