Chi Xiaochi: fourth-rate citizen at birth, three-time award-winning film emperor, second-rate temper, first-class looks.

He crawled his way out of hell on hard mode to become a winner at life.

Then, he was smashed into a vegetative state by a chandelier.

061: Hello, here’s a brief rundown on the scum gong reconditioning system. This system measures the regret level of the scum gong. Every time their regret level reaches one hundred points, you will be able to leave the current world. A friendly tip, usually, through dedication and self-sacrifice, our employees slowly foster a sense of dependency in the scum gongs, gradually making it so the scum gongs can’t live without them.

Chi Xiaochi: How many regret points is a complete loss of reputation and standing worth? How about a fall from grace? Or wanting something but never being able to obtain it?

This was a good one.

Not everyone is a scum.

I truly like the way they say about the original owner.

I hope all those contractor who have hatred in their hearts, will get a chance to redo their life.

and that Lord. I really hate this businessman

Excellent exploration on the transmigration genre!

The plot, characters, and world-building are well-crafted. Each arc is fairly self-contained (featuring new worlds and new characters) but linked together by an overarching mystery that runs throughout the entire novel.

The author knows her tropes but she takes it to another level. Each arc features heavy world-building and character exploration and it's so exciting to see the novel explore different aspects of people and the human psyche in creative situations. The themes get fairly dark ... more>>

but these themes are tastefully explored and treated carefully. Also, MC and ML are wonderful together and a great example of a compassionate and healthy couple which I love.

There is no glorification of abusive relationships... Only stories of healing (as guided by our lovely and compassionate MC) and that's something that's really unique to this novel and also a part of what makes it so incredibly captivating to read.

Highly recommend! <<less

I've only read 5 arcs so far, but im giving it a solid 5.

I didnt know what to expect when my friend recommended it to me, but after the small confusion I had on the first chapter I binge read it non-stop. What I love the most from this novel is the characters, the personalities are so well done, I could see myself being friends with them. And besides MC and ML, the characters of every arc are so well written you can feel the pain they went through in... more>> their past lives with the scum gongs. Ive definitely cried some tears reading the stories.

I love the interactions between MC and ML, the progression on their relationship, the foreshadowing... and the best of everything? I love ML eating vinegar ah, definitely enjoyed that a lot. <<less

Because of the good ratings and reviews of this novel, I had really high expectations. Like how the MC is super amazing and so on. Even though it really isn’t bad, the plot pretty interesting and is probably going to get better, I’m just waiting for the moment where I realize for myself how amazing the MC is, but the moment just isn’t coming and it really reduces my desire to continue reading this.

For now, I’m dropping this. Maybe I will pick it up again in the future but right... more>> now my enthusiasm for this novel is at rock bottom. <<less

I absolutely loved this book. Yes, it might be slow and the leads might not have the best of chemistry in the beginning, but I've never felt bored throughout the course of the book. It was engaging, sometimes intense, sometimes. Fluffy and I love the ML.

I didn't know the novel wasn't completely translated when I first started reading it, so I was very sad when I reached the end of the translation, but this is a book worth waiting for. (In my opinion)

This story is great. If I could give it a 10, I would. I won't elaborate much since they're many reviews about it, but boy, this story tops all the quick transmigration I've ever read (so much so that I'm willing to MTL it just to get to the bottom of the story). The characters are very 3D, even those scum gongs and side characters of each arc, with realistic motivations. Regarding the MC and ML, they're both my favorite type of main characters. Chi Xiaochi is badass, OP but... more>> not to the point that the way he solve things will be flat and boring. He is also not naive (a plus point for me) but he isn't also those MC's who doesn't have any empathy and only cares about their ML. Now regarding Lou Ying, the ML, the only thing I can say is that I'd die happy if I have someone like him. He is the perfect example that an ML doesn't need to be cold, aloof, indifferent, overbearing and possessive just to make a story good.

As for the arcs, each arc is memorable, not easily forgotten (unlike, cough, some qt I've read). It also tackles some issues or characteristics of some gongs that often being romanticize on BL stories (such as too much possessiveness (arc4))

What I like the most is the healthy relationship of the main couple. Their interaction is very good and as the story progresses you can clearly see why they fall in love with each other. Maybe I'm biased (since I don't really believe on love at first sight crap).

I admit that after reading DPUBFTB, for a while, I can't read any other QT stories without feeling that it's too flat or too boring. That's how much good it is. So don't hesitate to jump in and read. <<less

Overall: 5/5

This review was especially hard to write because I wanted to write just enough to entice people to want to read it but not enough to spoil its plot twists and thus diminish the surprise/joy felt on experiencing its sheer cleverness. If you're willing to heed my advice, stop reading this review right now and just start reading the novel!

Story: Be prepared to have all expectations blown away. The premise sounds mundane enough: MC pairs with system number 061, transmigrates to a world (one world is one story... more>> arc) where a pitiful shou offered up his body as host at time of death, travels back in time to before the shou's death, and takes revenge on the scum gong; once the gong's regret level reaches 100, the mission counts as complete, and MC can leave the world and take on another mission. Rinse and repeat for a total of 10 times, and then the MC can return to his original world (or stay permanently in a world of his choosing).

There is the expected--and satisfying--ass kicking. However, this novel is far more than just a gratuitous revenge story on repeat. Each arc is a story in its own right spanning 20-some chapters--with satisfying world-building, characters, conflict, climax, and resolution. The setting of each world varies: most so far have been modern (as the system explains it, the first few missions are similar to MC's original world in order to allow him to adapt quicker as a host) but started to diversify starting from the ABO setting in arc 4, which showcased the author's unique spin of this well-known genre.

And woven into each arc is the slow revelation of the transmigration/host/system process's true purposes, consequences of a host's actions on the original shou, and the MC's dedication to return to his own world. At chapter 113 (the most recent translated chapter as of 6/23/20), I'm constantly surprised by plot twists and just good, clever writing.

MC: Presumably the shou (not sure yet as of chapter 113). He is a beautifully compelling character: clever, resourceful, charismatic, seemingly shameless yet compassionate. His schemes to raise the gong's regret level are clever yet realistic. His antics (e.g. grinding regret points to buy special ability cards from the system's shop instead of just trying to hit 100 asap to complete the mission) are sure to give the system grief and cause you to laugh.

ML: Presumably the gong. A huge surprise when introduced as the likely ML, but the eyebrow raising quickly turns into cheering for the couple as their backstory is revealed. He is undoubtedly OP but kind rather than the cold/arrogant archetype. He is also very indulgent towards the MC but without stifling MC--a very hard balance to achieve.

Relationship development: The heart-warming and mature slow-burn between MC and ML acts as a foil against the relationships held between each gong and their original shou in the various worlds. Possessive behavior, dependent/borderline personality, and emotional/physical abuse are often romanticized in online--and especially BL--novels but would be red flags for a toxic relationship in real life. It was refreshing to see the MC reject these tropes. MC and ML are equals/partners in their relationship. It is also interesting (ongoing as of chapter 113) to witness the MC's hesitance to overstep boundaries with the ML while in a shou's body as MC respects the original shou as an individual person.

One final shout out to villain characterization. Without a doubt, each gong is a scum. However, the villains are as well fleshed out as the MC and ML (scratch that, even many of the side characters have backstories--kudos to the author), with their own motivations, and not all villains are the same level of scum. Although the MC must reach the regret level of 100, there are different flavors of regret, and not all of the gong push themselves into a "bad ending."

Critiques: Honestly, none. So, so good. I will be eagerly awaiting each new chapter. I wish I could read Chinese so I didn't have to wait for translators.

Actually, one final shout out... to the translators. Translation to English is superb but two things are the icing on the cake: embedded explanations on Chinese idioms (so don't have to scroll to the bottom and thus breaking flow of story) and embedded pictures of Chinese food described in the story! This extra effort is greatly appreciated! <<less

Best novel about Quick Transmigration because it's has:

Good depicted and thoughtful plot. Systems have own rules and tasks. MC won't transmigirate all his life senseless. His tasks have accurate aim.

MC is charismatic and morally powerful, he doesn't complain about his life, but overcomes difficulties. He went against the system, I mean other people even didn't think about solving problem, they just repeated victim's lifes and original body owner suffered more. But he works much for his "clients".

My favorite part is that Systems are live people like MC and it's much... more>> better than the systems which can only joking around, but they don't interact with plot at all, if you remove its nothing will change.

I love ML so much. It's just best men. Telling about him, it will be a big spoiler. He is a gentleman, has good character and leave good impression of his personality. Very carrying and lovely.

Indeed it's amusing, that the MC is egotistical, cruel and rude, from opinion many people, but ML looks like intelligent and gentle person. This couple so touching and a bit sad, but heartwarming and sweet. And plot really exciting, I want to know that will happen next. <<less

One of the best novels I have read with great characterisation and plot. Was doubtful of all the 5 star ratings but it really is well deserved. Genre changing and thought provoking, will make other QT novels look shallow.

The relationship between MC and ML is gentle, loving and filled with yearning. Very melancholic and different from the usual possessive love in other novels. All arcs and the numerous characters are very memorable and tugged at my heart. They are all so human and real. Chi Xiaochi seems so tough and... more>> smart but the little moments throughout show his vulnerable and lonely side and you can't help but cry. So many parts made me emotional that I had to reread them.

In fact, the novel is so good that I went ahead to read the raws even though im weak in mandarin. Strong from start to finish with no logic gaps or plotholes. Definitely the best QT novel!! <<less

I was shocked by the high rating and tried to read my first QT novel and I thank myself for doing so.

The way how the main plot was layer by layer unfolded is very piled up and reasonable, got me a feeling of watching Attack on titans...

i especially love how the story also show us the virtue of humanity even thru those pain. Not a person who would cry over a novel but I did, twice. ?20 chapters

I like to read transmigration stories where the characters are given their just deserts. This is so satisfying in how it's done because Don't Pick Up Boyfriends from the tr*sh Bin does transmigration revenge right.

Spoiler

For example, the MC of Capturing that Scum Gong was fine with all the abuse and r*pe that happened, but the original soul would probably be seriously upset.

The revenge that the MC does in Don't Pick Up Boyfriends falls in line with what the original soul would have wanted in this redo. The MC avoids having the original soul reliving their abuse, humiliation, and suffering as best as he can while giving them the revenge they wanted and deserved.

[collapse]

The story-building and plot are really good so far, but be forewarned that the two worlds I've read so far are pretty dark. A trigger warning is probably needed for the complete novel considering its contents. It breaks your heart.

Spoiler

The scum gongs in the arcs so far have serious psychological and physically abusive problems.

The first one was a possessive man who bordered on narcissism. He isolated and manipulated the original soul until he suffered from depression and committed su*cide.

The second one was a sadistic abuser and s*xual deviant who controlled everything he could get his hands on. He also isolated, tortured, and controlled his first and second husbands. Driving them to su*cide all while laughing.

This is the absolute best and most thorough quick transmigration I've ever read, for every reason these people have mentioned except afuruba, who has the most incredibly s*upid and mundane reasons for rating it poorly. Best QT novel after that every qt will feel bland. When I was reading Face of devil * I was like best novel, I will never forget it and here comes Don't pick up tr*sh bfs to crush previous words*

To me FOD became bland in comparison to this novel but still FOD is way better to many QTs..

he is isn't someone who is soft one needing ML help to save him at every corner. He is smart, cunning, strong, compassionate and indifferent.

His care for original hosts and meticulous plans for their future shows he is there for proper work.

At some arcs I was like how this is gonna be solved and Xiaochi comes up with his plans showing how smart he is, especially arc 5 (ghost) and arc 9 which even higher ups can't solve...

ML
Spoiler

Author is out here to break all stereotypes of other novels.

ML isn't like those overbearing, jealous at every corner, only cares for his needs. He shows how a man should be in a relationship. Both MC n ML care for their respective responsibilities. MC for his original hosts and ML as a system for his host (mc) . Whatever difficult stituation ML is in -like in Apocalypse arc his first duty is to make sure Xiaochi is in good condition.. he isn't like those Mls who won't care for MC work rather continously asking for attention, maybe those type of relationships (stereotypes one present in most novels) look good to read but in reality are toxic. ML is gentle not only to MC but to everyone which shows his maturity level. Whoever say Gentle Mls aren't in, those are here for a face slap.

[collapse]

Novel
Spoiler

well author picks up a simple arc and shows other novels how to write an actual novel without those dull repetitions only focusing on how op ML n MC are and how without doing any work qt is done only focusing on *romance*.

Author is out here to face slap all those novels out there.

Every arc is itself so intriguing. At every arc you will feel this is the most worst scum gong but no in next arc you will feel this one is worst. At end you just feel like taking out all those scum gongs with Lord God to beat them.

Author here even gives reason why this novel is BL as hosts/targets are taken up according to some rules fixed by lord God and hoho our Xiaochi fulfils all of them (fulfilling them meant person is weak, timid and cowardly) but MC presence became a bug..

The best thing about this novel is arcs are so out of box type not typical bland type. Every arc characters aren't 2ds rather they have their own charm and you remember most of original hosts with their side characters.. I even have many fav original hosts especially Xiao Ji (4) , Arc 3 original host, little snake from arc 7..

Face slapping here is rational not every scum ex was given death. Even arc apocalypse Ex was given chance again by original host as he (ex) was a extreme yandre but he didnt hurt orihost rather his friends. But when MC came he made him realise his mistakes as orihost does still have feelings for ex and wanted him to learn emotions, basically ex doesn't know any emotions as you see his past and may have little pity for him too.

In Arc 7 author shows how a transmigrator effects oriMC (orihost) of a novel. Scum was ruthless one, only using orihost as his charger for powers. He was peak of disgusting.

Arc 8 scum ex was like a pe*vert enjoying torturing n mol*sting orihost causing him to have ptsd. In this arc it was ancient era n orihost was a general. It was specifically chosen by Lord God so as to make it difficult for MC to go back to modern times. Here MC even helps orihost with his ptsd.

Every arc is itself a little story where you will care for every orihost.

Relationship development is natural in between them (MC n ml) and most of the time ML is eating his own vinegar as the guy MC love is ML who died long ago and ML has his memories deleted by Lord God..

ALL HAIL CHI XIAOCHI

Don't Pick Up Boyfriends from the tr*sh Bin is my favorite QT novel of all times. This novel made me rethink the purpose of the System in various genres. Surely, it does depend on the plot of the story, but once I have read this novel, I never thought lightly of QT novels and Systems ever again.

Chi Xiaochi is a very fresh point of view as a protagonist. Eveything he said and did, amazed me in everyway. He was the protagonist that really blew my mind off.... more>> From the way he handled everything to his simple remarks makes me smile. He is also a very good friend. Chi Xiaochi always regards the body that he is inhabiting with respect. He always wants the best for them even if he went to another world.

In short, Chi Xiaochi is an amazing actor with a heart.

As for 061, everything about this system also amazes me. The way 061 and CXC interacts is a refreshing feel in a QT novel.

I don't want to put many things in this review because I wholeheartedly want you to read this novel, and I can guarantee you, you might not look for a better system than 061. <<less

Absolutely amazing novel! I ended up MTL'ing from chapter 60 to the end because I couldn't wait for the updates, but I will reread it when it gets translated.

The premise itself is the usual quick transmigration into a lot of different worlds, but what makes it different for me are the main couple and the twist at the end of the first world arc (I'm not going to spoil what it is though). There are about 10 or so world arcs with some extra fluff in the extra chapters. The... more>> arcs are pretty well designed with different kinds of scum lovers and different sorts of situations, ranging from ABO, apocalyptic, historical, survival, modern, etc. Throughout the whole novel, the MC is pretty independent in his missions, though he does appreciate the help from the ML.

One thing I find nice about this novel is how often, the scum lovers were seriously scum. Unlike some other transmigration tropes, most scum lovers were very deeply bad and their actions terrible, and the MC usually has no sympathy for them either, which I really appreciate. The scums are not always "petty, jealous, idiotic", usually they don't see themselves villains even till the end, but realistically they are scum. The author did a good job addressing heavier topics like racism, trauma, grief, and depression, which I rarely see in novels these days outside of the usual anger and vengeful feeling. The plot of the novel wraps up pretty neatly in the end, I think, though I'll have to read the proper translations to be sure.

Speaking of translations, the official fan translations are quite nice, the author's notes are funny, and after MTL'ing, I feel a newfound appreciation since there were some arcs that were pretty hard to translate and I will never forget the time the MTL told me the word "Train" is a "ground drill". Or when it translated "can't help but suddenly reveal a smile" into "without a smile" and changed the whole atmosphere. Altogether, I got the gist of all the arcs, though actual character interactions should be much better in the actual translations. Personally I liked most of the arcs though the one that stood out the most for me was:

A thing that really sold the novel for me was the MC (and the ML). The MC is sometimes childish, but very strategic and smart. He is an actor and knows how to sell his act and convince people of his role. The occasional dark humour and blunt dialogue with the ML are also very refreshing, and he gives a new view on some things. He is not a white lotus, not a perfect being. past, and you'll get his whole story in the last world arc. Honestly I almost cried when I got the full story. Anyway, regardless of his dry bluntness and occasional childishness, the MC is also very caring. He treats every world arc as an actual world rather than just a stop to the end point and every character he plays as the character themselves and stays true to them most of the time with his own will and not forced by a system (in a way). He doesn't introduce a bunch of new abilities outside of the occasional buff from cards he buys from the system store. The characters he play, while all being shous that got wronged by their scum gongs, also have some variety in personality and a variety of support systems, some having no one, some having relatives, some having friends, etc.

As for the ML, he is also refreshing, because he is not overbearing, cold, cool, or, going the other way, idiotic and rash. Instead the ML is very warm and caring as well. He has his own skills and there are times in the story where he and the MC goes on and do their own things. He does get overprotective at some points and ends up helping the MC here and there, but never to the point of yandere or obstructing the MC. The MC makes most of the decisions by himself. I guess you can say that the ML is there for emotional and safety support. They are pretty sweet together, though the ML sometimes get exasperated about the MC. More info about the ML would be spoilers teehee.

Anyway, happy ending or sad ending?

Spoiler

Together, the MC and ML grow closer as time goes by and the MC doesn't do the "ignore his feelings until the end" thing. It's a happy ending!

Bigger spoilers about the boss:

Spoiler

The Lord God boss using the worlds to get entropy energy was a good twist and actually makes sense. The AI that's with him doesn't actually do much to the story though, it's mainly the Lord Boss that's the villain. Good riddance in the end there.

[collapse]

Bigger spoilers about the ML:

Spoiler

Previous reviewers have mentioned the ML being the childhood friend and yes that's true. In the last arc, the MC travels to a world very similar to his own and the readers find out what actually happened in his past. The MC and the ML were close childhood friends. The MC's parents hired a teacher for the MC and the teacher ends up mol*sting the MC when the MC was young. The ML tried to save the MC, but got seriously injured. The MC tried to find help but no one paid attention to him. When he got back, the teacher had found and killed the ML. The teacher told everyone the ML was a thief and the MC's parents believed the teacher. The ML's aunt and uncle abandoned the ML after getting bribed with money, the head police guy also did not delve deep into the case. Other stuff happened after but I won't spoil the entire last arc for y'all, but I felt really bad for the MC's past self.

This novel is very unique and breaks away from the cliche! You will not feel disappointed when reading this novel!

The translators of the novel cracks me up with their little footnotes for phrases and messages at the bottom of the chapter. I died in one of the chapter where the translators wanted to use the word "daddy" instead of "papa" or "dad." (also, thanks for the translations!)

Breaks away from the cliches by:

    • The system, for one, is actually very caring and not the usual emotion-less, rude, petty system.
      Spoiler

      System is male lead ohoho~

      [collapse]
    • The MC is rather clever. Although he comes off as childish and love to fool around, he thinks through his actions and all his actions end up coming together as a whole (which brings a huge sense of satisfaction) Also he says the most darkest things sometimes but I love it because its so relatable in a way. He makes the ML and even me speechless and I've laughed out loud so many times
    • The MC and ML are not OP. There is some "Lord God" of the world and is very powerful and evil. Might I say differ from other system novels, where the MC and ML can almost fight the world consciousness.
      Spoiler

The Lord God is tr*sh, using the MC and ML for his "experiments" He makes deals to those who have unresolved regrets when dying and when a "helper" transmigrate to that body, the Lord God has rules where you can't really change the original timeline, therefore those unresolved regrets will never be solved. And those negative feelings fuel the "experiments"

    • The ML is not some dirty, rude, forceful, lusty, selfish man. He is the exact opposite! He is so kind, EXTREMELY thoughtful/considerate, funny, doting on the MC weird ways and jokes, and sensible.

Intelligent characters, awesome counterattacks, great food pics, and an engaging plot of mystery and intrigue - this is probably one of the best CN novels I’ve ever read.

How it differs from every CN and BL novels out there: it makes sense. The slow burn romance with background stories between them, it just doesn't happen. The plot was well thought out and actually makes sense, not unlike Face of the Devil (I still love it, but the overarching plot makes no sense).

The plot is kind of like Puella Magi Madoka Magica

This is amazing!!! After I read so many Quick Transmigration novels, I feel that some of them are repetitive and predictable, but this novel is different a good different. I would say that this is better than FOD.

MC is smart, logical, seemingly cold but also caring to the people around him. ML is not a typical overbearing ml, but a really caring person. The romance is slow burn which makes me like all the interaction between MC and ML.

The best thing about this novel for me is the plot and... more>> the writing style. Each arc is different and unpredictable. Then there is also a mystery about MC and ML past. The translation is also good. <<less
