Read till Chapter 153 on gt.

Typical Xianxia stuff so far, except the modern day setting. Its one arrogant young master after another. Its on repeat.

He has two arrows in his quiver, with brute strength knock them down or call his backers for support. Or both at times. He never had to run away or make a strategic retreat, he always comes out on top. MC=OP.

He gets his strength from training while sleeping. He completed one set of exercises to become a Super Agent. His AI comes with another set to... more>> make him even stronger, for what? We don't know yet. Its just small fries so far.

He is committed to his gf but it doesn't stop other girls from coming into his orbit.

You won't miss out if you don't read it. Unlike Vpna this has no supernatural stuff or harem so far but chances are there might be harem.

Like Iras he does learn a lot of skills.

Chapters are on the short side or just felt like it because of how slowly the story actually moves. Just one year has passed in 153 chapters with time skips.

Characters are 'meh'.

Story is time-pass.

You won't miss out if you don't read it. <<less

Mixed feelings.

On the one hand, this author has two big things going for his novel: guts to write about such things I honestly am shocked he wasn't taken down by censorship and consistent quality even throughout 3000 chapters.

On the other hand, this novel is simply mediocre. It's good to kill time with, but nothing beyond that. It honestly fails to live up to even 10% of its potential.

So basically, the story is that we get a bastard child underdog from a small town getting access to a cheat - an... more>> AI with a massive store of alien knowledge and alien kung fu slash cultivation. Then he of course gradually becomes OP, overcomes (or not quite) his opponents, gets hoes, and so on.

Firstly, I appreciate MC's character. He's an okay guy and doesn't have any obvious personality issues except for his big hate for the Japanese, but at least even he seems to realize that his hate is unreasonably deep and unreasonable, and other characters sometimes gently try to chastise him or make him change his mind, so big plus for that.

What I don't appreciate is MC's capability. Honestly, he should've done so much more with his alien knowledge. In the course of the story, it becomes increasingly clear that his biggest enemy organization, Dynasty, was established by someone who has a similar or the same cheat as he (no, it wasn't discovered for sure by chapter 3000, so I can write about it without spoiling much). And I think the dude who set it up used his cheat much better: he established an international organization with powerful soldiers, efficient organization, and great economical and technological prowess. What has MC done? Set up a measly company, and he has to hold back so that his country doesn't steal his stuff and to avoid attracting too much attention. Honestly, he should've just made a secret organization as well. The paternal family which he returns to (as is the usual trope) is honestly more of a drag on him than a good backing, but that doesn't really matter anyway, coz MC has intellectual limits too low for it to matter much.

Then again, let's face it: MC is a village boy, pretty much. It's normal for him to have limited capacity and mental horizons, so I think it's pretty realistic. The problem is that I think that it wasn't the author's intention at all - the author wanted to have an OP MC, but he himself lacked imagination to write such an idea properly. MC failed to use up 95% of the potential of his cheat imo.

By the way, the title says the ultimate student, but that's bullsh*t too. MC doesn't spend much time at the university at all, and he doesn't learn a lot from alien data storage, either. He is fixated on two, three technologies and doesn't develop properly, either.

Another thing I appreciate is the harem. The way it came to be more than just a couple relationship was really awkward, but what I really love is that you can't be sure if a love interest will join the harem - it takes a hell of a lot of time, and some love interests weren't accepted by MC at all:

Spoiler

For example, something Fei girl is too materialistic, too focused on gains and losses while being rather indifferent to common people. Therefore, even though she confessed to MC and even stood naked before him, he held back and didn't accept her, because he couldn't accept a woman who thinks like her. Another example is the police girl; on the one hand, it's understandable that she almost got a boyfriend because MC really ignored her for too long and didn't answer her feelings, but on the other hand, she also is somewhat unstable emotionally (like most women, actually), and did a few s*upid things that made MC disappointed and disinterested in her, so she probably won't join the harem even at the end unless the author pulls off some bullsh*t twist. Additionally, some other characters (female bodyguards) were introduced as if they were potential love interests, but I think it was just author tease.

[collapse]

So harem in general is nice, but love interests inside it are a bit meh. They all have their distinct features and backstories, but their personality is not really detailed anywhere nearly enough, and they don't spend enough time with MC doing relationship stuff if you ask me. It makes the harem a bit meaningless when their interactions are infrequent or glossed over.

As for other characters, well, I think most enemies are too much of a c*ckroach that just won't die. MC should just use his super spy abilities to go over secretly and kill them instead of p**syfooting or pretending the problem doesn't exist. That's why he keeps having attempts on his life that sometimes get pretty close. As for allies, it isn't too bad. There are a few male friends and male relatives of MC that play a prominent role. They may not have particularly deep personality, but they aren't too superficial, either (for a Chinese webnovel, that is).

The plot is so-so. It's in a large part the result of MC's mediocre mentality and plans, for once. However, it isn't that bad that you can't read to kill time, and it's fairly consisted even after 2000 chapters. It was only after chapters 2700 or so that I started to skim through chapters as I started getting impatient to finish (and as you see, I dropped 150-200 chapters before the end as I decided I had nothing better than mediocrity to expect from the rest). It's thus much better than your average shitty Chinese webnovel, but nothing special if you have proper standards.

One thing I was really shocked by was the author's willingness to pull out dirt on stuff in PRC.

But first let me mention the usual racism. It is of course there, mainly aimed at Japan, but also Korea, Vietnam, and Philippines. I like how China tries to claim their territorial waters, but the author claims it's those countries in the south provoking China all the time. Then again, the novel was written around 10-12 years ago, so the situation back then might've been different than in the last decade. Japan is naturally a nest of little pe*verted devils that can't wait to revive their empire, while Taiwan is of course part of China, and shouldn't think of itself as a separate country (dumb MC, thinking their communism is so great people who enjoy democracy would ever want it).

So anyway, the stuff that shocked me was how the author didn't go China best - he indeed went "China has bad points, but we gonna be da best in the future somehow." For example, he mentioned problems of China as a country in terms of greedy officials thwarting economical development, or he alluded to hardcore communist repressions from olden days. He also said stuff like, always consider what [Chinese state] media say by a factor of 3 - if it's good, then think they exaggerated it thrice over, and if it's bad, then think they only mentioned a third of the problem (for example, if there's a catastrophe with casualties, then multiply casualties by three).

I'm honestly shocked this novel wasn't taken down. Maybe censorship wasn't as rampant or as capable back in those days, or maybe it's because translation of Chinese novels was still in it's early stages 10-15 years ago, so they didn't expect Western audience to read this. At any rate, I appreciate the author's candidness about China's true face instead of idealizing it, even if he pulled off the racism and Taiwan stuff anyway. This makes it much more fun to read because the author isn't lying through his teeth. I also like to read about such a China more than perfect paradise on Earth that is obviously bullshit.

One last thing: mtlnovel. Com has a readable MTL. Afaik, there's no actual translation. That site also has mistakes (sometimes ridiculous) in their version, but it's much more readable than average MTL. I recommend, other pages have worse versions.

So anyway, I recommend if you have nothing to read. If you have good novels to read, I don't recommend. <<less

If you like modern wuxia, and MC who's mostly likable, and harem- this may be worth checking out. Reading a bit more, the author gets super-racist later, and the story degrades as well- so... don't bother, really.

It was ok to a point- but it only gets worse as it progresses...

The Good:

  • Mostly likable MC
  • MC is designed as 'intelligent', and mostly pulls off at least average intelligence.
  • Quite a few detailed side characters- and not just the women. Many show some growth as well.
  • Females in this can be powerful, reliable, intelligent, or just friends/family without too much other nonsense. This shouldn't be a big deal, but for wuxia it is pretty rare. It should be pointed out that the context for this is that they are all subservient to the MC, or enemies in need of face slapping.
  • Reasonably good plotting. Nothing spectacular, but sometimes intricate & planned.
The BAD:

  • Villains are networked, in cooperation, able to access disgruntled, defeated opponents quickly, (etc) to facilitate plot advancement.
  • Many villains are quite dumb- standard 'you deserve a face-slapping' setup.
  • Quite a bit of recycled themes for the infrequent 'face slapping'. You would think there are more ways for people to deserve to get humbled- but apparently there aren't too many variations according to this author.
  • Many females end up harassed/needing to be rescued at least once. Some sexist ideas of 'women needing to be protected', etc. Not even going to get into the tolerance for his dumb sh*t related to various harem members...
  • Everything related to 'the system' is OP/broken- and consequently is frequently ignored.
  • Suffers from 'fight your enemies according to your level' design, where the MC will rarely meet someone who can kill him out of order.
  • At least one chapter of 'why did he do that?' related to s*x. Authors- your weird fetishes should stay private!
  • Various points of 'I'll get to that later' related to old enemies who 'disappear off the map' for extended periods till the author feels they can be useful again.
  • MC is seriously beyond dumb at times, just to kill time so the plot can progress.
  • Too many enemies 'come back for seconds' (since the MC didn't 'finish them off' properly). Sometimes this is excusable- but mostly it's just sloppy.
  • Lots of 'seriously- someone should look into that' for unanswered questions/issues. As well-connected as the MC is, he should have tons of info access. Well, the author making his seniors 'want him to learn/do things himself' is seriously dumb. With his level of enemies, he would easily die if not for being secretly OP.
  • Some pro-China, anti-Japanese, anti-Korean nonsense. Not much compared to the whole, bloated saga- but it's there. Ed: (Author goes full-on racist later)
The different:

  • I guess the attention to loyalty and family gives this a somewhat different feel- or the harem members being more than just hangers-on-- but those doesn't really count, so other than that, nothing particularly notable.
Overall, it's an enjoyable, though 'nothing exceptional' read for the most part. It has high & low points- don't expect too much, but it's a good time killer if you like the genre...

Up to a point-- after that, the author gets s*upid and the work becomes tr*sh. <<less

This author must be f*cking chinese nationalist. In reality everyone knows China beating America is just a fantasy.

Its a f*cking novel not a book for you to spread chinese nationalism. Next time you write deop the f*cking nationalism.

Other than that the book isn't that good. Just repeatative actions over and over. Much more than the cultivation levels.

I only read this for the girls.

The beginning point is original and interesting IMO. An outer-planer force changes the life of a down and out MC is good stuff and has been the basis of other great novels as well.

One of the main problems though, which shows the author's inexperience, is how repetitive the villains are, and other than the names and faces, they tend to resemble one another like Pringle potato chips. A good villain is often presented as someone who really isn't evil-natured, but the reader sees the villain feels forced to act that... more>> way due to circumstances. This author hasn't learned that and all his villains are petty, evil, and looking to pick a fight over anything and everything right from the get go. This gets tedious and repetitive as one antagonist after another appears to conflict with the MC over his women, his background, etc. There's a lack of imagination on the author's part to discover new ways of driving conflict other than sending drooling dogs in heat after the MC's women.

I can see portents that later on there will be original idea conflicts like probably a conflict over the MC's gift / tech, but your novel needs to carry the reader to get to that point and not fizzle out early on.

Another rookie mistake is you don't want your MC overpowered as that makes for less uncertainty and less drama overall. This MC never experiences a major setback that he has to recover / overcome and is yet one more sign of clumsiness on the author's part. Before we write, we have all read novels. How can the author have not run across the things I've just mentioned?

This and a few lesser reasons are why I felt it rated out as a 2 star novel........ <<less
