Description

Lacking a pocket dimension, power, a thigh to hug onto, and the three life advantages (money, power, and looks), he had been cautiously living in the apocalypse for ten years, getting closer to falling inside the zombie’s mouths.

Unexpectedly, he had the terrible luck, to be caught in a fight between two gangs and die, it really left people feeling disappointed. When he opened his eyes, he had returned to a decade ago, three months before the apocalypse!

Like before he still lacked an ability, an ordinary person without a pocket dimension, but he did have ten full years of experience living in the apocalypse! Even if he didn’t fight zombies, didn’t hunt monsters, he could still live a carefree farming life in the safe zone.

Find a safe house, utilise all kinds of skills from his previous life to farm in exchange for meat, and if possible, find a person to peacefully spend the rest of his life with; ordinary people had their own ordinary little pieces of happiness.

Originally believing he had picked up a beauty he returned home to prepare a golden house, but on the contrary he was the one being pushed down……someone once said, whether it is people or matters, by no means can you only look at the surface!

Update as of Chapter 29: I'm loving the relationship dynamics being displayed, it feels like a real couple slowly starting to tease their way into the other party's heart. The feelings don't feel plastic like many other "Romance" stories, it feels genuine and as spontaneous as real life thus far.

Update as of Chapter 19: The grammar is going into a slow decline, but nothing too bad, yet. The story is slowly starting to gain traction, with the setting firmly taking root, and the beginnings of an undertone to the story... more>> showing its face. I'm really looking forward to where this story takes us.

Update: I 300% missed that Yaoi tag... or was it even there to begin with? Either way, just do note down that it's there.

Loving it so far. Fairly well translated, just a few errors that don't detract from the word flow too badly. The premise and setting are nothing new but are executed quite well thus far. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series. <<less

Hatequit around chapter 80, bc I couldn't justify reading this blah meh thing any further. It was mysoginistic, lacks a compelling story, bland characters, not enough romance or chemistry (there are several CPs and all seem to have the same problem), not well researched, illogical.

  • The author keeps saying that the longer the apocalypse goes on, the less women there exist. They give no reason for it. It is just constantly and heavily implied that women are lesser than men in every way and would only become a burden or a commodity in an apocalyptic situation. Not OK!
  • The author keeps saying how the MC has no ability, but HE WAS REBORN. Normal people are not reborn. That is obviously an ability! A fricking second life!
  • There are many little illogical details that keep piling up. Example -> They are worried about a lack of clothing in the apocalypse, so they decide to forage for fabric and sew their own. EXCEPT if there is one thing the world has an OVERABUNDANCE of, it is readymade clothing (it is literally a fast fashion epidemic we have going on). And that is with billions of people. Only a fraction of those survive the apocalypse. And even a heavily worn item of clothing can last in a usable condition for years. Sure there would be a lack of resources, but definitely not clothes! And that is just one small example.
All in all, nothing that made me want to keep reading and a lot that made me want to quit.

It was a good novel that did what it set out to do. Unlike other 'reborn before the zombie apocalypse' novels, this one features an MC who couldn't be more normal. No abilities, no mysterious pen/broach/strange family heirloom that's actually a secret space/martial arts guide/etc, and few large scale fights. Because of that, this character is one of the more relatable ones I've dealt with- knowing his own powerlessness, he hesitates to save others, he avoids power struggles, and constantly plans ahead before he makes even the simplest decisions. Also... more>> because of that, the pace of this novel is VERY slow; you could even call it glacial. It's not just slow paced, the MC's desire for a stable/leisurely life means that there are very few moments of actual action and, even then, there's an overwhelming sense of practicality throughout that makes even the fastest paced scenes feel a bit... drab.

Overall, I took off a star mostly because, in the author's attempt to give the MC as leisurely a life as possible, I feel like he avoided anything that could/should have been a more dramatic situation, or led to a more dramatic result. A few situations in particular:
Spoiler

-Yun Fei's dad wanting him to vie for power, but he just sort of goes away after Yun Fei says no and blocks his phone.

-Yun Fei being one of the only 3 metal users in what looks like all the bases yet the strongest invitation he got into their ranks was along the lines of "hey, you free?". You'd normally expect someone to follow him home or go through the MC or something, right?

-MC basically picks up a whole bunch of new pets who manage to fit into their base perfectly without any issues that can't be resolved in 2 paragraphs

-Did we ever figure out why the dog didn't grow even though he mutated?

[collapse]

That and all the romance just sort of happened in such a dull way that I wasn't particularly interested.

Simply put, this is basically a super slow slice of life in a fast paced and action filled world. Not a bad read at all, though, so I recommend it. It's probably worth it to just continue reading the translations as they come instead of MTL, though, since this isn't something you need to go out of your way to read ASAP. <<less

Thus far, this series has been very dry and focused on prepping. Oddly enough, it focuses on some details but leaves out the bigger questions. For instance, how is he toileting the dog if he never leaves the apartment??? So far, it's only focused on getting things together, planting, planning, etc. The MC doesn't have much personality; his only distinctive feature is that he blushes easily. There is minimal amounts of action, comedy, and gore, even though this is supposed to be an apocalyptic novel. Unfortunately, I'm dropping the series... more>> at this point. It doesn't have anything to catch or hold my interest. <<less

Man I have to say this is bothering me at this point. Idk if it's accurate to the homos*xual experience or not, but as much as this is enjoyable in some parts, the internalized misogyny is really starting to bother me.

Usually I can ignore it for entertainment novels or something, but I think with this apocalypse, it's just too much to just see women like this as a total generalization.

If you cannot spot the internalized misogyny in this book so far, then I need you to spot it in yourself... more>> first. It's not a burn if it's not true ok. By 55 even, if you need me to list it, there is a list:

    • There has not been one main female normal character who has spoken.
    • All females so far have been depicted as either weak/clingy in the face of an apocalypse, as prizes, or morally deprived and aggressive
    • Let me tell you the fact that there is no picture of a woman being anything other than trouble, and the multiple surrounding friends of the leads are all "normal" good, helpful men really paints a picture, when it directly opposes the idea there is no such concept with women.
Do you understand? I mean, fine I understand culturally men and women are separated in asian cultures, but I disagree bc modern Chinese people do have both girl and guy friends imo so yea this is internalized misogyny.

Anyways, if you don't care it's fine. I mean I'm bothered but I'm still reading it. So far. Lol

I read one more chapter and dropped it lmao. I'm just bored. The writing is neither good nor really bad. I think if you want an apocalypse that's "comfortable" with a quick romance then go for it ig. The trans does need an editor tho... <<less

Love this one! It’s about the MC who goes back in time to a zombie apocalypse and gets the chance to make extensive preparations for it.

The best thing about the story is that all the characters are REAL PEOPLE! Not 2D cardboard cutouts who may or may not have powers. The human interaction is realistic, if a bit sad at times, though never too dark, but the MC is kind, generous, decisive, smart, and occasionally even ruthless.

The MC and ML fall in love not too quickly or too slowly and... more>> ML is thankfully not abusive, most of the time aside from s*x it doesn’t even seem like he wears the pants thanks to MCs preparations.

also be forewarned the MC remains a normal person and does not gain an ability- I was put off by this originally but the story is good enough that it didn’t even matter in the end, definitely this is highly recommended! <<less

This has a special place in my apocalypse loving heart!!

The main character is normal!!!! And isn't babied or looked down on!!!!!

Ugh I loved this so much.

... more>> Now there were a couple of points that weren't my favorites. Some characters felt like they were built up to have plotlines and then were just cut off. (Capt. Guo anyone...?)

Towards the end the pacing felt like it was trying for another arc but again, got cut off in the build up.

But these weren't disruptive to the story in my opinion, just minor annoyances, which is why I still give it 5 stars.

Not a huuuuuge fan of how they paired the girls off? I love the boys and am all for the pairings actually it just felt shoehorned in at the end. But when half the novel is stressing how rare women are and how bad depopulation is, I guess it's not surprising that they would get paired off.

I really loved how they treated the girls after they joined the team. Towards the end they sorta got pushed to the side but honestly still by far one of the best depictions of women in a danmei. <<less

Bestestest BL!!

MC is a normal person who just wants to have a good home and life a fulfilling life with good food & his pet dog. ML is an OP with Metal powers. He is much powerful than anyone else. But he is not interested in being in power. He rather stay with MC in his home and be his family (swoon, I wish all MLs were this cute).

MC saved ML and ML stayed with MC just because he felt the warmth of family for the first time. Even... more>> though ML was OP, he always followed MC because he knew MC was always right.

Really a match made in Heaven!

The story overall is also great. I got a bit intimidated with the number of chapters I.e. 256 but once I started, I couldn't stop 😍

Very Highly recommended!!! 🔥🔥 <<less

I absolutely love this novel! The one thing I dislike while reading zombie novels is the lack of practical living styles and the necessity to be the savior of humanity. With this novel, it's a lot more easier to see how a normal person - the majority of people - would survive in a zombie apocalypse and the limits of this lifestyle which is explored in its minor (or background) characters and the MC's past memories. It gives what it offered - a lot of farming and slice of life... more>> with some action due to the environment and some romance due to luck.

Our MC is very lucky because he has memories of 10 years in that environment which have trained him to survive the apocalypse. It's a logical consequence of skill through experience rather than a sudden download of knowledge in his brain. He makes mistakes and does a bit of experimenting. He lacks knowledge in certain aspects because he is a normal person - what he remembers is what he lived through and what was the most important to him. In this kind of environment, most people would be content with just being able to live peacefully, not worrying about food or water which is what happens in this novel! Not everyone wants to go out to find a cure or be a leader, and this novel shows that. Rather than forcing readers into the position of a OP!MC who bulldozers through the world with little trouble, we see a real person who is meticulous and vulnerable.

The romance between our MC and ML is not quick, though not exactly a slow burn either. It's more of the two of them advancing a relationship rather than quickly becoming lovers. They grow comfortable with one another and peruse the other's intentions/feelings before attempting a relationship. It's a more realistic approach to dating than I've seen in most novels, BL or otherwise.

One thing I saw reviewed frequently and discredited was the women in the apocalypse. I agree that, at times, the novel did seem misogynist. However, it still gave rational reasons for it. There is danger in menstrual periods that attract zombies and make them more frenzied. They are, biologically, weaker than men. In periods of chaos and conflict, women are taken and just tools for men (such as the comfort women during World War II). The treatment to women are historically accurate and in Eastern countries where women individualism and power has yet to match that of the US (which still lacks beyond the EU), this would happen. Heck, it still happens today in these countries what with bride kidnappings and men having multiple wives (I'm a woman of Asian descent, I have personally encountered this and have heard stories from relatives - it still has happened in the US as well despite what some may claim, it's just hidden behind "cultural traditions"). The idea of this is not just because of misogynist ideas.

Other than that, I found this novel really relaxing with some rising action. It was a great read to smile and laugh through while also nod along with its more realistic aspects. It progresses in a slow pace that I felt mimicked the actual speed that the real life experience would be - slow, waiting for the next harvest, waiting for the paint to dry, going to work day-by-day. Its pace matched the content. If you're looking for a slow-paced novel that explores the world of a zombie apocalypse rather than the power plays and rise to fame, this novel is great. <<less

I gave this story three stars because I like the characters and the main couple. Literally they were all that kept me reading as I hoped desperately for something interesting to happen.

My main complaint about the story is that the author goes way to far into the details of surviving the apocalypse. It seems like 90% of the story was about the home improvement projects the main character did to make his life easier. Which would be fine I suppose if this were a manual on surviving the apocalypse and... more>> not what it was advertised as: A romance novel.

My second big complaint, and it's already been mentioned in comment before me is the intrinsic hatred of women this author seems to have. All the women I have seen in the novel are either evil or totally helpless. (Except for the one who started a biker gang who is actually my wife.)

Now maybe this is because I'm some mouthy american woman but some of these scenarios, while I could see happening. I certainly would not describe them as happening as often as this author is making them seem. Men leaving women on their periods to die, babies being thrown out of cars as their screaming mothers watch in horror all while. All in the name of avoiding zombies.

Now I'm not from China. Who knows maybe ladies there are more passive then I could literally ever imagine. But I know a lot of women, I know a lot of men. I cannot possibly even conceive that even 80% would let things like that happen to them or to other people.

The fact that these horrible things are happening to all these women and nobody is even trying to stop it or help them, and there is not a single woman in this book that seems to have the wherewithal or the drive to at least smash a bottle over a guys head is incredibly unrealistic and frankly insulting.

I literally didn't realize how mad this made me until I wrote this, but yeah that sucks. <<less

I loved reading this (ノ◕ヮ◕) ノ*.✧

Though with 259 chapters (because one CH (I think it was 171/175, had.5), I had to stop and breathe halfway...

but once you come back to read, it will be all straight reading (*´ω`*)

Translation was from MTL, I think. just minor proofreading needed on most cases. Some typos but your brain probably would supplement that pretty well. Still a pretty good read!

The translator worked really hard to get through those piles and piles of words. So you better appreciate it (θ‿θ)

Novel:

Spoiler

Yes, like the other reviews have mentioned it's more slice-of-life (specifically, farming) approach but it's to be expected with the title.

characters are pretty good

Spoiler

Our MC, Lou Xun, was mentioned to be average-looking man who worked hard through the apocalypse to survive and eventually wanting to adopt a child but ends up dying and regressing a few days before apocalypse happened. Even with slight doubt, he quit his job, moved to a secure place (renting for a month), bought some seeds, seedlings, birds, food and other things he would need if the apocalypse does happen again. All this was pretty much in the description.

probably due to his hard-earned survival skills, he can be called an Otaku. An apocalyptic survival Otaku.

ML

Spoiler

Yan Fei, a slightly typical beautiful ML. They met (when zombies have become rampant) at a staircase while he was being pursued by his treacherous team members and was injured. MC didn't outright help him, just directed him to the vacant room next door.

Though MC did ended up moving him into his (MC's) house to avoid the pursuers and eventually ML just nesting there after getting pretty secure.

He started with honey-trapping intentions (even faking his weakness for a while, lol; eventually almost getting kicked out), to voluntary cooperation, to confusing attraction, to outright seduction (ML tried really hard), and lastly, a successful conquest (ノ◕ヮ◕) ノ*.✧

idk I just enjoy this pacing of relationship build up. not too slow like most novels I've read. And thereafter, just bits of dogfood, rivercrabs and whatnot.

[collapse]

Puppy

Spoiler

The gourmand chow chow MC adopted to be his companion through the apocalypse. Given that she survives through the night of that day and don't turn into a zombie. She is very dear to MC, although she did get cooped up in that house for most of the novel.

[collapse]

The 5 fresh graduates (?)

Spoiler

Li Tie, Wu Xin, Wang Dou, He Qiankun, Han Li

These kids where pretty good supporting characters (although timewise they're the same age as MC).

Li Tie was actually a follower of MC's blog (something he created during preparation for apocalypse, about tips in survival, mostly home-growing help, and diy projects) and saw the warning MC sent out during the day before zombies became rampant. So they were able to prepare even a bit of rations before things happened.

They teamed up only after getting to know each other once they became neighbors.

I don't recall them ever finding out that the blogger was MC. Maybe they lost their original phones where they saw the blog?

[collapse]

Deadly beauty

Spoiler

Zhang You, the beautiful male doctor who also got betrayed by his team members almost becoming fodder for zombies as the team runs away.

Thankfully, the 5 kids and our duo main helped him through that crisis.

He ends up as their slightly dangerous neighbor into a sharp-tongued powerful team member.

[collapse]

Th**ny Rose

Spoiler

Xue Mei was a fire-weilder of a team who lived in the floor below them, but was betrayed by her boyfriend. It was hinted (non-graphic) that she was assaulted but the other tenants on the same floor. She was eventually rescued due to the Team scaring off the bastards, and got a fresh start with a little help. she teamed up with them on a mission for crystals and the event just became permanent.

[collapse]

Water-weilding beauty

Spoiler

Song Lingling, another beautiful female character who ended up living with Xu Mei. She was a water-weilder who was hinted to also had tragic experience during the end times. Water ability was mostly not attack type, so she must've suffered a lot without being able to defend herself. Although after she teams up with the Otaku team, she has grown and developed more skills.

although, I never saw her getting strong attacking skills unless we count the combination attack with

[collapse]

Little sand lady

Spoiler

Yu Xinran, a kid who got sand ability but without proper guidance got treated as a waste ability. She was almost killed after getting sold by Xu Mei's ex (he's the cousin of her parent and last relative) to cult-like people who let her bleed and drank her blood. After being rescued, she lived with the two ladies, and became an essential part of the Otaku team. The lead trap-setter or essential construction member.

I don't recall the cult being ventured into... although that would turn this into a whole different genre

[collapse]

The rest of the companions they gain:

Spoiler

They eventually passively acquire two dog/wolf mutants and two eagle babies. They raise them up and eventually got around to being able to command them to attack (≧▽≦)

[collapse]

spoiler for endgame couples:

Spoiler

Lou Xun x Yan Fei

Zhang Yi x Wang Dou

Li Tie x Xue Mei

Han Li x Song Lingling

Wu Xin x He Qiankun

Tags are pretty straightforward, save for aforementioned

nothing too graphic narrated if I remember correctly. Zombie-killing (this is to be expected in a zombie apocalypse novel), mutant battles, and some human-human battles. But I don't recall any gruesome details (ー_ー゛) Also some minute hints of s*xual violence. Yes, JJWC has probably strictly tied the author's hands. It still worked pretty well for the apocalyptic setting their going for.

[collapse]

Thank you translator for doing this novel! I enjoyed this a lot. Your dedication to completely translate this is very amazing. I wish you best of luck on your current projects!

Thank you to the author for writing of this world! (although it was not a great situation the people where in) It was a very interesting take on how a zombie apocalypse would end up. <<less

This novel is deeply write a stories about survive in apocalypse, not fight the apocalypse.

MC is not about power or legend but about making a nest and eat good food.

ML too who seems OP don't really care about being the leader some group of people but he is searching a warm home that is the MC *squeals*

... more>> Not combat, action, or adventure but slice of life thingy.

No deep character explanation but describe a lot how to do things like planting, cooking, rebuilding, etc.

This is a rather boring and long novel but will give u a fresh breath after reading too much OP MC and ML that have to fight against the world *lol*

So, read this with not so much hope but to take a breather ☺️☺️☺️ <<less

First of all, I love how MC and ML love and respect each other.

The relationship between ML and MC:
Spoiler

- The MC is just an ordinary human, without powers awakened post-apocalypse, while the ML awaken powers. But despite this, ML respects and supports ALL the MC's decisions.
- ML knows that MC is capable, intelligent and a natural leader, and he always makes that clear to MC.
- The way they two interact is so natural and so beautiful. They really care and love each other.
- There is no scene of meaningless jealousy that happens in almost all novels. (For example, there is a scene where a friend (one girl) of them hug the MC and ML doesn't bother. Simply because ML trusts MC and their friends!)

[collapse]
They become a couple in chapter
Spoiler

46

[collapse]
I think this scene is so beautiful. They talk like adults and express their feelings clearly. I thought it was so beautiful that I cried reading it (tears of happiness). They have s*x for the first time in chapter
Spoiler

57

[collapse]
There are NO explicit s*x scenes! Just mild comments that something happened.

About the plot:
- Remember that this is a novel about a zombie apocalypse that has a romance in the background. NOT a romance story with a zombie apocalypse in the background. The difference? The story of the novel is focused on the zombie apocalypse not the romance. So if you want to read, know that you will follow the story of how the characters did to have a good life after the apocalypse. (But know too, that the iterations between MC and ML are very beautiful and full of love <3)
- The final chapters (I don't remember the number exactly, but it is after 170) are not as good as the first ones.
Spoiler

They want/need to change the base, and the whole problem of building a secure base starts again.

[collapse]
If you start to find it boring you can just read quickly without much attention OR skip to the penultimate chapter. The penultimate and the last chapter is where everything is resolved.

About the characters:
- I really love how MC and ML don't want power. They just want to live in peace, together and happy, until the end of their lives, without getting involved with politics or the military affairs.
- Secondary characters (the friends of MC and ML) are important. I was able to connect with them and feel that each has a role in the novel.

What I didn't like:
- As I said, the final chapters are a bit repetitive, since we have to see
Spoiler

again the whole process of building a secure base.

[collapse]
- I wish I had seen a little more of the
Spoiler

life of MC and ML after the zombie threat was controlled.

[collapse]
- In the end, it only mentions how the secondary characters form couples. I wish I had seen them fall in love throughout the novel.

I gave it 5 stars, because it is exactly what I was looking for to read: a smooth reading, with nothing too deep, with good protagonists. Before reading, I looked at all the comments here so I already knew what to expect. <<less

I binge read all the chapters in three days and I gotta say Wow, just wow. The slice of life perspective of a zombie apocalypse is so refreshing. The fighting did not dominate the plot, rather, a lot was dedicated to actual survival. As someone whose biggest fear is zombies, this perspective was extremely satisfying and I was cheering with the team all along the way. The story doesn't focus much on the romance, but it definitely had its fair share of fluffy moments, it's much better like that honestly.... more>> The couple pairings are all very cute, and I especially loved
Spoiler

Wang Duo and Zhang Yi's interactions with each other.

[collapse]
The story also fleshes out the characters nicely - they're all there to pitch in in some way, and it also reveals the dark parts of humanity like greed. I am also really grateful for the translator, a lot of long novels are dropped for all kinds of issues, and even though this is partially MTL, it still reads smoothly for the most part. <<less

This is not for people looking for high-action, plot heavy adventure zombie apocalypse novels. There isn't a lot of face-slapping or the like and the level-upgrade isn't the bombastic type. Although there are political conflicts, the MC is either always at the edge of it or is actively avoiding much of it.

HOWEVER, this is a really good look into how a zombie/power-mutating apocalypse could change society and its people and structures, told from the POV of a man who was given a second chance to prepare for it. It's a... more>> fairly leisurely read and does focus more on the MC (a normal man with no powers beyond his prior knowledge and experience in the apocalypse) and his struggles to establish a space for himself in a post-apocalyptic world. It's very slice-of-life.

I like how the ML is built to be OP but subverts many OP expectations. I also like how this novel took the time to treat women as people too and how it treats the way relationships are formed.

Although there are action scenes, the majority of the plot is just how the MC and his band create a safe haven for themselves and a look into how societies and people may act when met with the zombie apocalypse combined with power-mutation scenario.

Because this approach to this genre matches my preference, I'm adding a half point and another half point for the translations, so I rate this a 5. <<less

This novel needs some serious editing.

The story and translation are decent. Lot of zombies, mutants and plants are described. The ending is realistic with no miracle cure for the virus. The romance is ok.

The problem with the writing is the endless paragraphs about planting and meat. So repetitive. Ugh.

Overall, a dull read.

7. Make sure none of the allies have living family or friends during the apocalypse!

8. Build your own base!

And that's about the gist of the novel. There's nothing dramatic, no angsty moments, no Shakespearian tragedy. Just a friendly guide on how to fight zombies effectively and to live a fairly comfortable lifestyle. <<less

Second time reading, and it feels less engaging than what I remembered.

In summary, the narrative revolves around hoarding, home renovation, and zombie fights.

On a positive note, the MC's versatility is really well-executed without crossing into overpowered territory, and I really enjoyed the concept of an "ordinary" person living through the apocalypse; even though he got a lot of help from the ML, who can basically do anything, from home renovation to building furniture and setting traps for defense and offense. The author balances what they can and cannot do pretty... more>> well. The other teammates are also all very nice and likable. I really appreciate the fact that even though half of the team is made up of ordinary people, everyone tries to do their part to keep the team thriving and peaceful.

However, despite my enjoyment of the Slice of Life aspect of the story, there are times the author went too far in detailing some of the constructions/renovations, making a portion of the story feel redundant, and the story progression becomes slow and seemingly without plot (It went from the MC preparing his room before the apocalypse to renovating the ML's room, his other teammates' room, the whole 16th floor, the 15th floor, the new base, the tunnel, and bas**ents 1-3—this is just too much renovation and construction).

In addition, the scale of the team, with 10 people, 2 children, and a pet is quite small, and the team feels too closed off since there isn't much information sharing with outsiders nor cooperation with other factions (I really wish the old metal team would reunite sometime later, but, too bad, that doesn't happen). Although the reason behind the team's move and the establishment of their own base is totally understandable, I still think the story would be more fun with more people's interactions and contradictions. So, story-wise, this might be a bit too bland for my liking.

Notwithstanding my criticisms, it's still a good read, and I don't regret reading it, even though there are occasional boredom due to excessive and repetitive explanations in some aspects. <<less

Starts a bit nice but soon becomes real dull, nonsensical everyday life, with no plot, no characters development, and a few s*upid stereotypes I could live without...

it also portraits a humanity that is so s*upid and greedy, that they have time to kill each other, while surrounded by zombies... honestly disappointing and tiresome...
