“I curse you to never die in peace!”

Thus, Shang Ke started a never-ending cycle of constantly throwing away his miserable life.

He would always show himself as a martyr while letting others cry over his death.

It was because of a woman’s curse that Shang Ke was hit by a car and turned into a human vegetable. This led to him becoming bound by an unlucky system in which he was cursed to die. The most unfortunate part was that he never cheated on anyone’s feelings. The reason for why he was cursed by a woman was because of a guy named Qi Chen. Qi Chen was a ladies man, and he would always use Shang Ke as an excuse to break up with any woman that he was with. As a result, Shang Ke was always blamed for the breakups. Since then, the main character could only be forced to cross into different worlds. He would thus experience for himself, the hero’s “thrill”.

I really liked this novel at the beginning. However, the ML is extremely overbearing and oftentimes doesn’t care whether or not the MC consents. I guess that’s the one issue I have throughout the series. My favorite novel with a similar premise was Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil. For the most part, the MC of that novel eagerly consents even though the ML is overbearing and assertive, meaning boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed are not crossed. I want to say that my second favorite is Heroic Death System,... more>> but I can’t. The reason is because of the last arc.

Spoiler

In the last arc the ML escalates. He directly r*pes the MC multiple times. And it’s not just the, “not now, omg you’re too much” kind of thing. It’s 1) ML breaks into the MC’s apartment while he’s asleep and r*pes him and the MC wakes up and actually fights back because he doesn’t know who TF is RAPING him. And 2) ML is jealous or something over MC and doesn’t want to listen to what he’s saying so while the MC is trying to reason with him he r*pes MC and doesn’t take no or stop as an answer. The second might not be 100% the exact scenario I described but it’s probably very close. Then, the worst part of it? Because I could accept this plot as being part of the ML’s mental issues in that arc, if the r*pe was addressed seriously and not brushed aside. But it was. It was totally brushed aside. The MC is like “you know that wasn’t cool right?” And the ML is like whatever. So the MC just ignores him for a little while, and the ML thinks about how he just wants to r*pe him anyway. And then, while this is happening ML’s as*hole family kidnaps MC and dumps him in a foreign country with nothing and allows the ML to assume that he ran away, so he becomes even more obsessive. And the MC is like ok cool I’ll just lead him on a wild goose chase, maybe that’ll teach him not to r*pe me. And all in all, it just was... such a poor way to end the series, I was so disappointed. I guess the only good thing is that, that isn’t their final world together. However, this arc almost made me stop reading altogether, I was that repulsed.

[collapse]

There were a couple other issues that weren’t dealbreakers but really bothered me when they happened. for example:

Spoiler

MC has the option to return to worlds that he already visited, in order to live out his time with the ML in peace, and reverse the damage that he caused by dying heroically. In one of those timelines, he has a child. Now, I was so darn excited for him to return to this timeline, because it’s one of the only ones they have a child together and I thought their interactions could be so beautiful. Anyway, so before the child is born, MC dies and the doctors manage to save it. In the OG timeline where he dies, the ML who doesn’t know how to raise a child clashes with his son because they are both dark sentinels. So he ends up neglecting his kid and is basically a terrible father. The kid grows up resenting his dad for all of that. When MC returns to this world, both the ML and their child return to the past with their memories from the first timeline. So the son comes to understand why his father was so heartless after MC’s death, and is really happy to live in a universe where his “mother” is alive. You’d think that the ML would be grateful too, now that he can now have a proper relationship with his son since that MC can ease their conflicts with his “guide” powers. Nah, dude literally treats his son like an outsider and a rival. He constantly acts jealous of his own child, and tries to mark his territory in front of said CHILD. I could not have been more disappointed. There is not even one moment where I felt that ML was trying to be a good parent. He just let MC do all the work while constantly sexually harassing MC in front of their kid. There’s even one moment where the kid sleeps in bed with them and the ML initiates s*x. And instead of shutting that ish DOWN, MC allows it to continue through to the end. Guess what idiots, your son was awake the entire time. And maybe it’s my western sensitivity, but I found that scene so gross, not funny at all. I wish that MC would’ve told ML to actually act like a father, but he doesn’t. He just kind of just acts annoyed and gives him the silent treatment instead of treating it seriously. If ML loves MC soOOO much, then wouldn’t he also love the offspring they created together? If that’s what you thought too, than this arc will probably be disappointing for you too, even though it was supposed to be one of the fun ones.

[collapse]

So to conclude, there was a lot to love about this novel. I have the same problem with the lack of consent as a lot of other readers, and how r*pe and assault was ignored and romanticized throughout. I won’t take off more than a star, however, because I enjoyed most of the novel. I definitely agree that you should skip the last arc if you want to get maximum satisfaction. It sucks to get so far in, only to have such a disturbing final arc. Anyway, this is just a warning. Read at your own risk, you’ll probably be able to get some enjoyment out of it. If you are coming in to it expecting it to be as good or better than Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil, you’ll probably be disappointed by the end. <<less

Was almost perfect for me. But I have to admit, the male lead is kinda all over the place. Literally.

Spoiler

So he's half a lamp forever? The protagonist will always have his memories even in the next countless reincarnations? And I've seen the "jealous of myself because I split myself into a bunch of other people" trope before, but this one's the strangest. WHY IS THE MALE LEAD A LAMP? Someone give me a better ending for this.

So... at the start it was interesting but everything kind of went downhill after the fourth or fifth arc. MC is given the chance to survive through the heroic death system but he dies. All. The. Time. He is given the chance to upgrade skills but for some damn reason, the author will do SOMETHING to render them absolutely useless when he needs them the most. Martial Arts is apparently God level and yet... he dies because of a chair. Mr Miyagi that shit, tf?

Also, the ML. He is your... more>> usual "you-are-mine-and-i-can-have-you-whenever-i-want" type of guy. Consent who? Don't know her. His character itself is pretty bland and even the side characters were just meh. Some had potential but they're quickly swept under a rug. Author places them there just so it could spark the ML's jealousy and give you that "oohh he's possessive" thrill but it's written out in a dumb way. For example. Alpha x Alpha. The main character of that world (not our MC or ML) apparently was a cold Alpha that wasn't interested in anyone but only focused on studying or whatever. So tell me why, when he escorts our MC to his room... he wants to try sleep with him? It was a forced situation where the author wants every cold character to automatically WANT the MC.

Stars was mainly given for the translation because they did a great job. <<less

Sigh. In all honesty, I liked the first few arcs. Both the premise and the missions were interesting. But as we wade through the arcs, I just can't bring myself to care for the MC/ML. The story is just the same darn thing rehashed with a slight setting change. They're so uni-dimensional and tepid. Romance? Lol. The ML is always the possessive, cold guy who's never heard of prep before thrusting into the MC. As for the MC, he's such a stereotype.. I haven't seen even a sliver of any... more>> real personality shine through.

I actually preferred the tragic endings cause at least I felt something while reading them. I didn't enjoy the do-overs at all. Gonna drop.

I'm sorry to say this doesn't even hold a candle to FOD (even though I admit FOD got a little incredulous from time to time). It's dull, so so dull.

Fav arcs: 72hrs, Covenantor, A+A

All snowy translations are top notch.. My second star is for them. <<less

Today I just completed the novel and it feels so weird because I've been following this novel for like 3 years-ish? I think.

This novel is an extremely great world-hopping/quick transmigration novel so I suggest that you add this to your book list if this is the type of genre you love.

There is one continuous male lead and the story is never bland.

... more>> Every arc has its own specialty that makes you want to go back and re-read (like QT Face of Devil <3).

The best part of this novel is that they include an arc for the arc. You know that unsatisfactory feeling you have when an arc ended but you can't do anything to fill it so you just distract yourself with the next arc? Well this novel include an after arc. I love this part of the novel so much, and I think you will too so you have have to read this.

I recommend this novel very very much.

Happy reading <3 <<less

This is quite disappointing.

I think I would like this if I didn't read QWFD. QFWD raised my standards high that I can't enjoy this novel.

The ML is without a depth in his characters. His personalities suck and sometimes he act as an obsessive psycho to MC. Their relationship was just like built outside and it's nothing on the inside. The author made it as if he/she made the ML contrasted to MC to stand out the character of the MC being a hero. The sub-stories are really not interesting, lack... more>> of details, lack of actions. Lack of communication. Completely boring.

I'm mostly on half of the story but I still can't enjoy it so I'm judt going to drop this and maybe read it again if there's a chance. <<less

Heroic Death System aka last arc should never have happened. Is an exceptionally unique novel in QT genre. Where the main part is exceptionally nice, while the last arc and ML exceptionally ruined the whole favorable impression.

Its' title itself explains a lot about the novel. Main goal of Shang Ke when he crosses for the first time is pretty simple - please protect the world heroically and it's very likely for you to die by doing your missions, but you will live happily in this world if you succeed. And... more>> it's easy to guess that MC is followed by a raw of failures, but not because he's incompetent, but because the missions are really hard to accomplish.

STORYLINE:

Let's talk about few unique story features: 1) missions of the worlds are not about rebirth or revenge, it's all about saving, they are also burdened by high level of difficulty; 2) the arcs consist of world stories and return to failed worlds stories, which is totally different from any other QT novel I've seen, simply because MCs and MLs in QT novels don't fail or fail only once. But here you never know when and where MC might fail. The full story can be divided into several stages, or I'd say - phases. Phase 1: Shang Ke being a novice transmigrator, getting a grip of doing tasks. Getting to know that he is followed in reincarnations. Phase 2: The story behind MC and ML revealed, going back to failed worlds. The seemingly irrelevant worlds finally become part of one big plot. The only huge elephant in the room is the last arc, supposed return to first world-starting... ML already acted not in a great way before, but this arc kind of hit the last nail. Because it's last it leaves a bad impression on the overall thing..

WORLDS:

A separate pay of respect to author for imaginative wrolds, even basic ghost or cultivation worlds have absolutely unique taste to them. And I don't even mention the use of fantsy genres and such. Thanks to the missions the storyline doesn't go too deep into things, because mainly storyline is directed towards with clear goals pointed by mission contents. Though storylines are relatively simple, but they bring enough interest, tension and tears for MC.

CHARACTERS:

    • MC. His character is quite unique, the story actually shaped him too, since he managed to persist for survival as his main goal, he also has a never-ending kindness to him, so it's a contrasting strong and kind personality. The greatest part is that he is basically the moving force, I like when MCs are the ones who control the progress, he and ML create a power couple where ML is a physical force, while MC is brains and a aguiding force.
    • ML. He has few parts that I am not a fan of, but I can explain them by the background of two of them. His obsession with MC is quite the burden at times and I can understand by the year of the release and by overall trends, this type of ML suffered from trends of those years. But at other times you realize that it comes from unfathomed deep love (thus in many worlds ML has absolutely worst ending when MC leaves). One is to have a good idea, other thing is to nail down great execution...
I personally treat that last Arc never happened.

When I read the background on the red flower I actually really liked the idea of it, it adds a really sentimental and great touch to the whole story. Although all QT novels are mainly directed at ending at some final world or final destination, which may not seem exciting, but HDS and its' unique worlds make it a fun and interesting read :) <<less

The story is so fking sad and make sure you prepare tissues while reading the story. I love this novel so much. It's very similar to Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil but 10x sadder. The main character is very strong and kind, he doesn't think about revenge or evil stuff but instead he want to make the world better and he care for people. He is willing to sacrifice himself to save people and his lover which makes the novel very sad. Every time when a arc ended... more>> I find myself crying and become a little depressed. The story is very sad and sweet at the same time. I'm glad that the story got a decent ending but I'm not very satisfied with it. I feel very bad for the male lead and whenever I read the part that tells what happen to the ML after the MC died I cried so much. The system is also b*tch.
Spoiler

After 200 chapter the MC can go back to each world/arc and have a happy ending but sadly he can't go back to some world because he failed the missions. The system becomes more friendly, too.

I just read a few of the reviews and I realised that people are drawing "parallelism" b/w other QT BLs (such as, FOD) and this which I think is wrong. This is because it is a great quick wear but you can also read "HE" arcs towards the later chapters which makes it "unique" amongst other QTs. I used to try the arcs (and indulge myself in the tragedy for a bit) and then later go for the HE ones. Its like alt. Ending. You get to "choose" which one... more>> would you rather prefer to read (but I do recommend reading the "tragic" ones first bec the "happy" ones are co-related to them). Not to mention, all the plots are pretty "unique" and these "one-shots" are a great way to read during breaks. Not to mention I really loved the translation quality, though I would appreciate it if the translator updated the actual number of chapters that have already been translated.

Spoiler

Btw if you want to check the HE ones of all the arcs, go for the "Re-arc" tagged ones. A few (like arc My heart beats for you, becoming your faith, conventor have already been translated. So you can check them out if you want to.

Btw the first arc's ending might seem "fast-paced" but it also has a good enough "Re-" arc for it. Also each arc has abt 10-16 chapters, so they aren't all that time-consuming. Not to mention it isn't your usual face-slapping (like the scum shou where the ML realises their mistakes and a few others or FOD where the ML goes on suppressing the supposed protagonist of that world). It mainly focuses on how the ML falls for MC and how he "dies" a "heroic death" later on (somewhat like "Let Me shoulder this blame"). So, it's pretty unique.

Utilizing his experience from Via City, Shang Ke grabbed the Queen with the help of his companions and pinned her to the back of a flying fortress arthropod. He was even so kind as to give the Queen protective armor. Then, they all concentrated their attacks onto this flying fortress arthropod, causing it to fly all over the place and lead the arthropod army into confusion.

The heart of that flying fortress arthropod, that had been beaten around everywhere, was very angry: Why are you humans only chasing and beating me!

The variant arthropods on the ground that wanted to rescue their Queen were also very angry: That big flying bug, hurry up and put down our Queen! Otherwise, don’t blame us for defecting!

Fort flying insect: Damn you guys, what are you guys doing bringing along the Queen to a battlefield? Is it just so that you guys can mate whenever you want to? No wonder you lot haven’t changed at all these several thousand years, you’ve only been raising numbers and not IQ!

Variant arthropods: You bird bug! You think you’re so amazing because you’re big? Because you can fly? If you have the ability, come down! Let’s see who kills who!

A solid 4.5/5. This novel is a decent mix of humor, tragedy, and romance. Unlike other quick transmigration novels where there's a firm resolution at the end of each arc, MC actually fails a lot of them leading to disastrous consequences. The arcs are fairly interesting and definitely unique -- in one of the arcs he's even a pen. This is not a euphemism, he's literally a pen.

Two points of contention, however. First, consent. What is that? It doesn't exist. I suppose you could classify most of it as dubcon,... more>> but either way -- very iffy so read at your own risk. Second, the ending was a little hazy.

Spoiler

In my opinion, the last arc could have been cut entirely. It wasn't really contributory and was just a some dog blood with a bad ending that was shoehorned in.

Who MC and ML originally were isn't made very clear. They were some sort of cultivators who got trapped in a cycle of rebirth, I think? Not too sure. The ending is also open ended and lacks a clear resolution.

Basically mini-stories with the same MC in different situations (some really s*upid but some how it makes sense) and ML (same soul) in different bodies. Very interesting scenarios and that pull at my heartstrings. My favourite is to read the RE stories which are worlds MC failed but can come back to and stay with ML peacefully this time. (人・㉨・) ♡ I will add that this is best read for the scenarios MC is in without much thought otherwise because the overarching story that links his transmigrations together isn't great and... more>> the ML in the very last world made me uncomfortable. But I don't want to retract any stars for that because I love re-reading this novels arcs every few months and still enjoy them even with flaws here and there. <<less

Highly recommended! Especially a must read if you are a fan of quick transmigration tropes. Although the amount of 'tragedies' in the story was a bit much for my liking (but it's ok bc things will eventually turn out alright), it is still very well written and quick paced (so you won't stuck being too sad XD).

Compared to another 'tragedy-filled' QT novel known as 'Quick transmigration: male god come here' also known for its 'quantity', you could say 'Heroic death system' is more sophisticated regarding its 'quality'.

I assure you that... more>> the chances of you disliking this novel is very low, AKA 5 stars deserved yay =^~^=/~***** <<less

Be prepared for all the onion ninjas, as they'll ambush you when you least expect it. I freaking love this story. I just finished MTLing it and kind of sad that it ended and no way of having a part 2 or something. And because it's MTL, there are parts that I couldn't really understand so it causes confusion but man, this is good!

I love the first arc, god, feels so sorry for Ravel. My favorite arc would be the Ghost Assistant where ML is kind of suffering from mild autism and our MC is just so caring and motherhenning ML. This story is good... more>> because it has MPreg and the children are so freaking cute! You would think that after having so many talents from many reincarnations, our MC would be so OP (he kinda is) but everything flows smoothly. MC is badass, so is ML. God, I can't have enough of this story!

I seriously recommend it to everyone. The ending kind of sucks for me because I want more but it's open ending so everyone can imagine their own endings (I'm continuing the story in my own mind haha) so it's good. <<less

if I had come here directly after reading FOD I might have had issues with this novel, but as I came here after struggling through Pleasing Start-Over I found it pretty good in comparison. For one thing, there was a variety of genres while PSO has five or six 3 gender worlds (four in a row) out of a total of nine that he hops to so the variety of genres is lacking. On a similar note, I don't like ABO but the story in this novel had an interesting... more>> take on it. In fact, this series took several generic genres found in almost every quick wear novel and gave us a different story. For example

Spoiler

in the ABO world it was two Alphas rather than the usual Alpha/Omega pair. In the zombie world it was complicated (and a little squicky with the zombie-human sex) and it wasn't only about finding a cure for the virus (on a side rant: viruses don't have cures. We can't even cure the common cold virus, or cold sores, or HIV. Now if it was a parasite or bacteria driven, then the search for a cure makes more sense. Also, using the imaginary virus cure on an animated corpse should result in a dead body since they were dead to begin with, not a suddenly living human)

[collapse]

i liked the MC. He doesn't start out OP; he slowly gains skills as he progresses, but each skill he gains he eventually masters, sometimes spending fifteen or twenty years in between world hopping. He was a little passive but not timid and naive. I also liked
Spoiler

that this MC fails sometimes. It's easier to relate to someone who tries his hardest and still fails because we've all been there and done that. And then he had to suffer his punishment

[collapse]
there's not much to say about the ML. He was a typical ML: OP, possessive and mostly rich and powerful in almost all of his incarnations. Also, the story lost a star for the NC scenes, since I have a problem with r*pe/ dub-con.

Spoiler

the soul thing was a surprise though

i read several quick wear novels recently and this was actually one of the better ones though I wish the ending was better. I'd rate it at 3.5 <<less
