Shu Nian who grew up in the orphanage dreamed of becoming a princess since childhood so that a prince will come to rescue him. In the end, the one who came was not a prince but a cranky 「master」 Xie Yan…

I recommend reading this story only if you are interested in themes such as:

  • Tragedies of our own making
  • Inevitable love
  • Denial of being in love due to a taboo
  • Irredeemable mistakes
  • Accepting and fighting the taboo
  • Justifiable distrust in a romantic partner
  • Saving someone else from making the same mistakes
  • Complex negative feelings after a r*pe and how to face the perpetrator (x2)
  • Relationship where one partner always takes while the other always gives finally doesn’t work out
I don’t know how to rate this novel. The writing, plot, and even the ending are not ‘bad’. However, something... more>> about the execution left me unsatisfied and even upset. I agree with the view that some of the drama is unnecessary and there only for the sake of drama. I feel like the story had more potential to explore the themes presented better.

I also kind of wish the extra explored the last minute love rival rather than an oddly rushed ”happy alternative ending”. I would give 5 stars to see her regret her part in what happened. Well... it would also help certain characters have more depth. Really, the ending just needed to show long-lasting impact to the world beyond the male lead. Some characterization of other characters along the way wouldn’t hurt.

What I hate most about the alternative ending:

The impressionable orphan who thought he was in love with a straight man kept a positive relationship with the yaoi couple after he found out otherwise. Wtf? A bent man denied him by leading the boy to believe the man was not the same orientation. It is true that the man could never give the boy romantic love, but the boy who went to such extreme measures to keep the man by his side happily accepted this ending when the excuse was no longer valid? The Male lead allows someone who hurt his lover around his family? I *suppose* it can be presumed the boy moved on after much trouble.

I do like that the main couple seem to have adopted though... It was a nice touch that went back to the main characters origins. If only the adoption or at least donating money to orphanages also happened in the real ending.

I don't like it. The ML is disgusting. The MC deserves better. Though the novel is well written and the the translation is excellent, its just that I can't stand the shameless, obnoxious, liar, scum ML. That 1 star is for him.

Couldn't stand the ending.

I can't stand that disgusting woman who caused a misunderstanding between XY and SN. She goes on a blind date with XY, both of them unwilling, and made her family believed that XY took her v**ginity, who then wants the marriage to go through. Then in the HE chapter, she is allowed in that same house as them. Honestly if that's the HE version then I'd rather the BE be the only ending available. At least that piece of sh*t is longer in contact with XY.

I finished reading it. And am not going to rate this because I am not sure how I felt about this story.....

This novel was full on abuse on my tear duct... Sometimes thought out reading this story I was wondering 'why even am I abusing myself' Like seriously, the happy moments in this story could be counted one hand, and that's also because the abuse was too much so slightly less toxic moment became sweet for me.

The ml' family:

ML's parents adopted someone as a substitute for a dog for ml...

ML's parents didn't understand MC at all nor did they believed in him, who had stayed for 18 years with them.

ML's mother, forces ML to go to the blind dates after ML declared that he liked MC. ML didn't didn't liked anyone women so she arranged a tomboy girl who claims that she is lesbian.

ML's father.... This old man.... I don't have any word for him... But well at least he persuaded ml's mom to leave him be.

The tomboy woman.

After ML told her that he likes men and has someone he likes and only wants to get married to him, she straight up knocked ML down, kidnapped him, took him to a hotel, stripped him naked and acted like ML took her v**ginity and blackmailed him. She isn't even interested in him and only wants to get married to him just to avoid blind dates.

She even had the audacity to go to the ML's house where MC lives and act like a hostess in front of MC. Demands food, and the workers doesn't do their jobs and wait for MC to cook. Gets poisoned and blame MC even though it happened to her because of her own stalker. Did she apologized? NOPE! And she also stayed with MC and ML in the extra H.E.

Lets talk about ml..

ML this piece of sh*t damn right declares he is homophobic but still touches MC all over his body and when MC refuses, he vents all his anger on either MC or the people near him...

ML treated MC as the substitute for his dead DOG... For a freaking 18 years he treated him like a dog

Because he learns that MC like him, he directly sends him to London (?) Without even thinking whether MC could speaking the language over there. Then act all braty in front of everyone else like. Then suddenly makes a decision to go see MC by using the excuse of the important meeting in London which eventually he didn't attend and someone else had to do the job. Sees MC getting assaulted by someone and feels gross out by him and then he gropes MC while MC is drunk and that is not all he r*peD him.. then in the morning he goes' it was awful' while this bit*h was quite happily thursting that garbage into MC last night. And he goes it was all your fault you seduced me, blah blah blah and runs away meanwhile MC is there sitting with his chrysanthemum ripped apart dripping blood. MC also had to had to send him to the taxi with his whole body acheing. MC falls ill and ML storms off on MC for not calling him meanwhile MC is in the hospital alone.

Goes on blind dates and tells MC to believe in him but he himself doesn't believe MC. When that bit*h was poisoned everyone thought MC did it including this garbage. MC told him he didn't but still even though he knew MC wouldn't do that but he still didn't believe him and then he gets angry at MC and ignores him.

Later he acted like a maniac when MC disappeared.

Let's talk about Ke Luo...

Honestly I pity him at the same time also hate him.

This kid was downright a psychopath. He r*ped MC, mixed sleeping pills in MC's food so he doesn't escape, imprisoned him in his appartment, emotionally manipulated MC, and finally gave MC his shares so MC doesn't or couldn't run away from him.

Why I pity him? Well because his mother abandoned him and committed su*cide, his father nowhere to be found, his relatives doesn't like him and continuously keeps surveillance on him. Doesn't allow him to have friends and all his old friends are also frightened away from him by them and finally he found a person he loved but that person also doesn't love him.

Now lets talk about MC.

Honestly at the beginning I was quite sympathetic and pitting him but as the story goes on I eventually started to dislike him aswell.

MC, he's weak and I don't mean that as physically but both mentally and emotionally... He had many chances to escape all that sh*t but he didn't. He loved someone and that's good okay but the person he loved treated like a substitute for a dog...

That's why he's emotionally weak.. he could have atleast tried to stand up for himself but he didn't.

He's like a puppet. And anyone can manipulate him and he'll still forgive him. A typical little white lotus holy saint... And he is always disregarding himself for others. He's depressed. It wasn't stated in the story but thoughout the text I could feel his depression... He was r*ped twice but still forgive the assaulters and thinks that it's his own fault. He hated his own sexuality because of the society. He feels inferiority complex, and has lacking confidence, bottels up his emotions.

He has no ambitions, dreams, even no opinion. He lives like a puppet. At one point I even wished he would just commit su*cide because it became unbearable...

I hate him because I could relate to him and I don't want to. Living with having no opinion and ambition is dengerous. It later becomes depression, gets suicidal thoughts, have inferiority complex, introverted personality, and most of all you become so afraid of every little changes, becomes a coward and I don't want it...

Thought out this story the thought I most had was.

I am not a fan of angst and melodrama. This novel has both aplenty. I loved the characters though... realistic, flawed and endearing. The author is very skilled at making her characters come alive, with their emotions so overwhelming and heartfelt.

What I did not like was the constant drama created by the author... drama just for the sake of drama. Halfway through the book, ShuNian already went through so much bullshit, that each new drama seemed more and more contrived and unrealistic. The mere fact that the author had to... more>> write an alternate ending, shows some incoherence and indecisiveness. Or else, why the need for another ending? mannnn why the author plays with our hearts so much 😭

i was really sad with the last chapter (ending) and was regretting reading the story, then I continued with the extras and here I am, smiling again.. I really like the extras. They're like the true ending.

Well this story is good enough, most of the times heart-breaking. You can totally understand how low-confidence MC is, the is older than ml, with average look, nothing special, so he just accept anything lies upon him. I got mad at ML something,... more>> cause we really sounds like typical rude rich boy who get anything he wants, that he often disregard people's feeling. Still, glad I finish the whole story at the end. <<less

"Shu Nian gave him a feeling of having a candy hidden in his pocket where others wouldn't be able to have a taste except for himself who had already enjoyed the deep and hidden sweetness."

This story is so bittersweet. One second everything is beautiful and happy, and the next I'm crying uncontrollably. There were a couple of scenes, especially the entirety of volume 2 chapter 2, that I wasn't a big fan of. Some of them felt like they were only put... more>> in for extra drama. But those didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of these novels. The ending was really sweet, and the extra scene was pretty funny. This duology was really good, and I look forward to reading more novels by Lan Lin. <<less

This novel was another guilty pleasure.

I like reading novels with a tsundere main lead who chugs on vinegar (lots of it) unknowingly with sadistic tendency (in the bedroom, I mean). He was abusive, but at least he is not throwing punches left and right. By no mean are his actions and behavior okay, and in reality he would probably get a lot of lawsuits, restraining orders, and face jail time. Yet again, this was like a guilty pleasure for me only because of the jealousy and the hilarity that comes from it, so that was why I gave it a high score.

Another trope I love are unrequited love novels! The MC was an absolute white lotus, doormat character, BUT there is a reason why he is that way. As an orphan, being with the ML was probably as close to affection and care he will ever receive and he feels indebted for that. Although abusive, readers can't ignore or deny that the ML also favored and took very good care of him too.

If you are looking for a well written and well thought out novel, this is not it. It is nothing but melodrama. If the trigger warning doesn't put you off, I say give it a shot so you can laugh with us while also cursing the main lead. <<less
