Ruo Xi is a stubborn, feisty lady who has no qualms talking back to princes and brawling with princesses. Even Emperor Kang Xi teases her with the nickname “the thirteenth missy who tries her damnedest”. This very same girl was originally just your average white-collared worker in modern bustling Shen Zhen but due to some cosmic slip, she manages to travel centuries back in time. Along with her knowledge on how history eventually pans out, she finds herself embroiled in court intrigues. She knows she shouldn’t be swept up in the power struggle but she can’t help herself because this involves the ones she love as well as the ones who love her. Thus, she can only forge ahead cautiously, step by startling step …

First of all, watch the Chinese drama as, in my opinion, it is one of those rare cases where the drama is actually better than the novel because we get to see and know more of the side characters.
It is often a risk writing a story with a first person perspective because it is limiting and sometimes boring but this novel manages to pull it off. It gives an intimate tale of a modern woman who suddenly wakes up in ancient China. She is scared, lost, misses her old... more>> life and, at the same time, she must learn to adapt to her new situation learning how to dress, how to address nobility and reading/writing old Chinese.

What really sets it apart from other novels of the same genre is the realistic and down-to-earth feeling of what it really meant being a woman back in the past. There is no idol prince who will only love you and will choose you over everything. A woman in the past, especially if born in a noble family, had little control over her life, at any moment she could be ordered by the emperor to get married to a stranger or to enter the palace becoming one of his countless concubines dying slowly in a golden cage. Even when she managed to get married to someone she liked, she had to compromise, sharing him with other women. So, don't expect a typical romance, there are sweet moments but they are drowned by the hard reality.

The title "Startling by each step" couldn't be more appropriate, Ruoxi lives all her life constantly paying attention to her steps, she has to think twice before speaking, she has to be careful in her work as tea maid in order not to displease an emperor whose mood Is always changing, every action must be thought over. I also like to consider the title's meaning from another point of view: each step made by Ruoxi sets her future, from small seemingly irrelevant actions like, for example when she pays more attention to the 4th prince because she knows from history he will become the emperor but that leads him to believe she is romantically interested in him, to bigger actions such as her stubborn refusal to plan her future blindly believing/hoping she could escape the palace life.

I could say so much more, but the review will be too long, suffice to say I recommend this novel to people who wants a more realistic and maybe sad take on the transmigration genre which is fulfilling and so emotional. <<less

Starts off light-hearted, then gets progressively heavier with a serious undertone before concluding as a tragedy.

I loved how Tong Hua managed to incorporate BBJX with history, weaving her own story into significant historical events during Kangxi & Yongzheng's reign like the succession battle.

I loved how Ruoxi was just a normal woman who happened to time-travel; she had no esoteric, mind-blowing skill, but lived an exciting life all the same.

... more>> I loved how everything came to a full circle at the end -- history cannot be changed.

I loved how the story doesn't deal in black and white. There's no 'good' or 'evil' characters, just a cast of individuals with their own motivations, each with different things they want to protect. Whether it's the 4th Prince or the 8th Prince, both of whom left trails of destruction in the wake of their ambitions, or even Empress Xiaogongren, with her favoritism towards her other son, the 14th Prince -- none of these characters were ever painted in absolutes. Maybe you disagree with the choices they made, but it's a matter of perspective and I don't think there was ever a right answer. Should the 8th Prince have traded his ambition for Ruoxi? Even with the clarity of hindsight, who is to say what was the best option?

I do wish it didn't end in a tragedy though. It took multiple fanfics and alternative endings before I could move on. <<less

This is my all time, favorite novel of Tong Hua. It's so sad though. Happy days are so short compared to unhappy times.

I love to read this kind of time travel books and thus stumble into this novel. Bu Bu Jing Xin has many characters that contributed to the whole plot of the storylines and each of them have their own charms that make us wanting to know more about their personality. All time favourite. Hands down. Should be considered a classic already, considering the amount of attention its drama adaptation got. I love angst novels, and this one tops the list, ticking all the right boxes. Tong Hua was able to blend true historical events with the plot of the novel, and at the same time, reveal the inner turmoils of the palace. The choices that the FL and MLs need to make, and the consequences they bring are a key to the story development. Though the romance is bittersweet, it... more>> was my favourite part of the novel. Literally, the first and only chinese book I've purchased (physical) and completed. <<less

I started reading this because of the new k-drama that's coming out soon, and was intrigued at the story. Although it's slightly confusing, what with the numerous princes and confusing actions, I really like it. The story doesn't focus too much on the mc's past memories, and it made me smile several times. I look forward to new updates.

Watch the drama series. It came out long ago. It would probably take decades for someone to pick up this translation without dropping them half way. For people who are not familiar with scheming, this might suit you as the MC starts learning it. There are betrayals, love interests, sad times, tragedy....
