Pretty mediocre for how highly rated this is. Was alright for the first hundred or so chapters, but when gods heavily started taking an active role in the story, the quality of the plot fell. Led to all types of inconsistencies in power scaling, how fights were faught and left too much room for plot holes to develop. MC is described as being OP, but almost all his strength for the majority of the novel came from other gods, which left the possibility of him losing a good portion of... more>> that strength at any given moment for whatever reason. Wasn't until around chapters 500-600 that he really began separating from the powers of others. Then there's the fact of how easily mortals could fight gods which led to a bunch of confusion in how strong everyone really was. Just a big mess and that's leading factor for as to why I lost interest. Only read to the end (which was terrible) because I don't have the habit of dropping novels. <<less

Inconsistent and inane.

Writing is inane, repeating everything bit of information across exposition, dialogue and internal monologue like the reader is an idiot. There's also practically no characterization beyond stereotypes, and subsequently no character consistency. It reads like "Enemy, become my s*ave subordinate" "No, I refuse to betray my friends" MC is Pikachuface. Jpg, he had expected Enemy to be difficult, but never this stubborn "I'll twist your nips if you don't" "Well sheesh, if you're gonna be like that I have no choice" "And you'll have to mu*der your friends"... more>> "Eh, sure, whatevs"

Even the MC has no character beyond Gary Stu. Literally everything he attempts doesn't just go according to plan, it succeeds way beyond that, with knock-on effects that practically rain rewards on the character.

MC is described early as being the less smart of the siblings and has to work much harder, so of course he spends all of four days reading books to discover all humans are doing magic wrong, and he's the first person to figure out how to do it right in the history of ever. <<less

It's just a mess.
I haven't read far enough to make comments about how bad the logic of the plot will turn out to be farther down the line, but I can't read much more of this.

It's obvious that the MC is supposed to be set up as some kind of edgelord superhuman 'Cain' from the army with the personality of an ice-cold cynic on a mission. He's really not. He's portrayed like that but in reality he's just stumbling blindly into scenarios, gets "flashback memories" from his brother for... more>> every little thing, and uses "Draconic vision" for literally everything he struggles with for a free win.

That's just the MC though. There's soooo many problems here.
The mob characters? HOW DO THEY SURVIVE? The MC literally relies on "edgelord army skills", plot armor, prior knowledge and cheat abilities to JUST BARELY SURVIVE every "trivial" encounter in the tutorial. Is it even reasonable that anyone else can survive considering the apparent difficulty? No.

If you can meet people INSIDE the active tutorial, how come the MC never met anyone in stage A, saw corpses anywhere etc? Surely people should have died? Sloppy writing and should just be classified as a "per-person instancing". Just consider this; If the MC started out at the same time as everyone else, shouldn't.. Pretty much everyone do the same challenges at the same time? Hundreds of people running through 3 arrows? It's written like it was designed for an individual challenge, but obviously hundreds of people would be challenging it at once.

Just in general.. How can "guilds" in the main tower be "advertising" and "backing" guilds in a tutorial when nobody in the tutorial should know anything about the people in the main tower? We have to remember that the MC's illogical brother just found out about this place in a text message on his phone, much less our MC.
Also the future small-time antagonists and "mysterious characters" are edgy as f**k in the way they're written.

And the best part about it is that every point wrong with this novel can superimpose upon how ridiculous the scenario is about the MCs brother.
He's weak, introverted, has no special abilities except for perhaps that psycho skill, no experience, no prior knowledge etc.
How did he even survive the first arrow? He shouldn't.

Well that's it. I spent roughly as much time writing as I did reading. Don't waste your time with this garbage. <<less

I heard quite a bit of hype about this and came out thinking that it's alright. I can certainly see what people like about it - it's a typical KR wish fulfillment power fantasy with a stoic, dry wit MC who becomes insanely powerful at breakneck speed. At the same time, I can easily see why it's unlikable - it's a typical KR wish fulfillment power fantasy with a stoic, dry wit MC who becomes insanely powerful at breakneck speed. Perhaps it gets better, but I started to get quite... more>> bored right around the Monkey King chapters because once again, he sees all the secrets they can't see, once again he figures out how to survive the tests while the others have to run, once again he is granted more godly gifts when he could go pretty much the entire story without more of them at that point. If all you do is throw more and more sugar onto a cake it ceases to taste good.

He simply has too much given to him way too fast. His pocket watch creates an incredibly weird setup to begin with - if his brother knew all these secrets and the secrets are clearly repeatable, and the secrets have been around for hundreds of years... it becomes kind of implausible for them to be secrets anymore. Putting aside that weird plot hole, he's just too... good at everything, as these super special KR men are. He has a skill that makes it so he can never lose his composure, grants him resistance any times the skill triggers, has eyes that can discern the weaknesses as well as anomalies in both animate and inanimate things, a draconic body that has evolved way behind normal humans and the draconic knowledge that comes with it, a godly bracelet that not only stores souls but allows him to use them as permanent ghost servants that not only retain their memories but can grow stronger and regain their former powers, a shield of the gods, a holy sword, a dwarf friend who happens to be one of the top craftsman in the entire tower at his beck and call, the martial inheritance of one of the strongest combat races in the tower as well as the apprenticeship of its leader, and two mythical beast pets.

HE GETS ALL OF THIS BEFORE THE QUARTER MARK OF THE STORY. How to drain all tension out of a story 101. The bracelet alone is SSS+ tier overf*ckingpowered and we could've had a compellingly strong protagonist off of just that alone. <<less

I got pretty into it, and it's fairly interesting. The writing isn't bad, and I like the blunt and coldheartedness of the character.

One thing that pisses me off for asian novels is that somehow the girl, especially if she's attractive, always gets off scott-free. For instance, when Yeon-woo kills Phante (edit: Phante isn't dead, but oh joy Ephora has a favorable impression of him, what a surprise), but Ephora survives because of some mysterious insight eyes or whatnot. She and her "cherry red lips" can f*ck off and die already--I'd like to see ONE asian novel that has the "beautiful" girl die first and lose.

The novel it self doesn't have any flaws, the thing that ruined this novel for me was the protagonist After all this novel focuses almost entirely.. No entirely on the protagonist so if protagonist isn't likable same goes for the novel

Spoiler

It's clear from the very beginning that protagonist isn't a good guy, and certainly I didn't read this novel thinking that protagonist would be a good guy. The reason I started to dislike him is because he's a kid. Yup you heard it right he's a kid a kid who likes to steal and break others toys but starts crying when someone else breaks his, . Can't understand what I'm saying eh? I'm saying that the amount of hypocrisy that the protagonist have inside him can't be measured. His brother was betrayed by others this he wanted to get revenge, and how was he going to do it? By betraying some completely unrelated person like Hades (clearly he didn't betrayed him, or it's more correct to say he didn't get a chance to). Another one is that he thinks anyone that have even a slightest connection to his brother should have sacrificed themselves to protect him (his brother) He even expects someone like Athena who didn't have any relation whatsoever to his brother to help him (brother) unconditionally. Why should she help that guy? Because that guy is our protagonists brother and our protagonist is a unreasonable kid, no? I mean it's the responsibility of an adult to help a kid eh? It seems our dear protagonist thinks of himself as a kid. And the whole concept of getting betrayed by everyone of his party member (except perhaps one person, can't remember that guy's name) speaks of his brothers incompetence as a leader and I don't think just greed would be the reason to betray their friend. Some at least not everyone in his brothers team could be greedy right?

Regardless it's perhaps just my personal preference I don't like protagonist like him. Some other major characters have their own personalities, the whole concept of tower is well explained. It can be pretty fun if you can push thought about Protagonists personalities to the back of your head. But sadly I can't, so I'm quitting it and because of time I have wasted on this novel I'm giving it one star

[collapse]

But really it lack any sort of psychological pressure cause no matter what happens protagonist is going be profited at the end of the day, after some time you lose interest it feels like sitting in your class listening to your teacher explaining a subject while you have already completed it and there's nothing else you would like to know. Anyway if you don't mind above mentioned thing read it, after all everyone have different preference. Oh by the way you must like absolutely must like reading about grinding mindlessly without plot moving anywhere to read this novel. Or I don't think you would be able to bear with it. And remember one thing "Protagonist is always great, He is always wonderful, He is the best, He can never be second at anything" Yay!!! <<less

Ever wonder why ok is not 2 stars?? So we can't say something is just sh*t but we have option between horsesh*t and dogshit, this is dogshit, yet sh*t non the less.

Still it had potential, if author had brain and stoped for a moment to think. Instead he writes most senseless things, making everything around MC.

Every chapter you'll find plot hole guaranteed, listen to MC say he isn't talented but his brother is, see him know everything like he made the tower himself and get hidden pieces that for centuries... more>> non knew about.

Some chapter are total disappointment having to wait fot them to come just to find them filled with lvl up and points info.

Most intriguing conecpt is 98 floor demons and gods, but for them to have anything relevant to the story we'll have to wait for too long. <<less

Generic KR Dungeon themed novel, poorly written characters, and Gary Stu MC trope. Early on you can tell that this is not meant to be a quality novel, it's a guilty pleasure. To me, it's not worth continuing.

Addictive.

Again thank you nisaea and the other translators who worked on this novel!

I rarely get hooked on novels because I'm more critical when it comes to story plot and character development. But second life ranker blew me away and got me immersed in wanting to stay and watch the MC develop and get stronger.

The original author in my opinion is pretty skilled in writing. I like that it's hard to predict the decisions that the MC makes and, even more so, the path that the MC will take to get... more>> revenge for his brother.

Do take the time and try reading the first few chapters!! I can say for sure that second life ranker is a promising one! <<less

The story is good till MC become the 'child of Chronos'...

*For me* It starting to be stale after the 'oh my MC and his twin brother are child of Chronos' moment, at that time what I felt reading that chapter was "Meh.... here we go again *facepalm*"... Its fine if the MC and his bro are Chronos child, but after that the MC dialogue *kind of or feels like* he is quite arrogant, and proud cause he is Chronos child, its quite a bummer *once again, that what I felt for the chapters after that 'oh my..' moment*..

The MC *looks like* having a personality change, also the story gone from "Revenge" troupe to Chinese godly battles, I mean "C'mon... put that 'godly battles' to sequel with another MC"

The story goes from revenge+grind > grind+grind+grind, then the battle goes from mortal vs mortal>demi-gods vs godly beings.... I feel like I'm reading Korean-Chinese hybrid novel for the godly beings arc.

[collapse]

3 stars for the story after that SPOILER section...

Edit : I dropped this, cause the story goes way out of the main theme at the beginning of the story for the later half. <<less

Usually I try to weed out the novels with no substance by identifying the signs that it's gonna be a series that comes up short in post mid development, lack of magic system, and lack of individuality of the supporting character. Now this series was a run on streak, where the plot distracted me from the other signs, and like a fool I read up to the translations and here I am.

Just for context

Yes he is an Asian man child with no social skills, therefore all the side characters never... more>> say or do anything.

Yes, there is no magic system, skills and bullsht just fall out of the sky.

and Yes, the development does run short, at the 29th floor he inevitably gets too strong for anything else to be relevant. And the plot starts going downhills.

Typically for these OP MC Korean series there is a unique line designed to pat their own backs to affirm themselves to supplement their insecurities and dose up on the dopamine. And this time it was "You have achieved something that's not easily done." What I replaced that line with in my autoreader is: you have grown a pen*s that is bigger than average.

I think this series started out great, but the lack of magic system and significance of the female characters makes it one dimensional. It's got no comedy, no romance, and no intelligent conversations. A 12 year old can come up with plot, but the details matter. <<less

I only recommend this if you are waiting for a chapter release for a different novel or are entirely bored.

The plot of the novel is interesting even though I got Tower of God vibes from it (More like Author just read the WEBTOON and decided to make a novel extremely similar to it)

The Author proceeded to ruin the novel by giving the pocket watch filled with his brothers memories to him. If it was only bits and pieces then it'd be fine but nope it's his entire life in... more>> the tower.

MC knows all the hidden pieces because of the memories (if the brother knows then why not everyone else who sends their clan/families there) so expect him to get everything there is and know everything possible.

The novel read like a boring textbook to me, could be because of the glaring plot holes and nonsense. <<less

Latest chapter was lit af. Really good story if you like a solo MC. Kinda like solo levelling. The story is cliched of course and not many new elements are there. At least the world is not befallen by an apocalypse as you can choose whether you want to go to the alternate world. The MC has a heart but not much of a companion guy as his brother was backstabbed. Pretty sure the MC wont have any love interest as his brother was backstabbed (Which is a good thing... more>> IMO)...

I like it. <<less

I don't want to say much. To many times while reading it was clear the author was adding something that didnt exist, or they never thought of before to the story. Basically it's jarringly obvious when the author forces, changes and shoe horns in stuff to let a particular scene happen or magically allow the character todo something.

Poorly written.

Ignore all those low star reviews. I’m a really picky reader and I love love love this novel. It has all of my favorite shounen elements, an OP but tactical MC with a heavy back story, good challenges and adversity for him to overcome, great friends, interesting enemies and world building...I wish it can be continued!!!

5 stars... 2 stars

... more>> Into this... not anymore

I'm sorry for people who like my comment previously, but I no longer have interest to read this anymore simply because ihmo this is getting bland. Unless you still like to rate 5 stars, I won't feel sorry to change my rate.

Why??? I don't really know. I can't really find things I don't like or can't stand it from this webnovel (people can say this is bad because some aspects don't meet up to their standard). It just it's getting duller to read, I have no expectation to patiently read in detail (anymore). Although I was skipping some paragraphs, the next next words don't really make me wanted to re-read what I skipped. In the end, I skipped whole chapter. <<less

Start of the story was great and interesting with his cold and calculative personality which I like very much.

With each floor discovery the world building was taking pace slowly with MC becoming overpowered and also with his character being developed.

But after some time his power level suddenly increases and story also becomes bland. There is not much character development and story smells repetitive, honestly it becomes boring to continue, so I am droping the novel now for good.
