This was a novel for those simple minded and naive person. This novel suited the saying "All brawl but no brain". All of the characters here was too s*upid, there were no good schemes here. All of the schemes here was like a child's play, even a intelligent kid could scheme better than the schemes here. There were not even a so-called Grand Scheme here. In fact, it was really easy to kill this MC here, but the characters here was just too s*upid to use their brains. I dont... more>> know if the author intentionally made the characters s*upid, or is he really a naive person.

This novel was like a one-man show. Almost all of the characters here was too useless including his friends, family, and enemies, it seems like they were just made for the MC to show his might. Every setting in this novel was so advantageous for the MC to the point that it was always have a cultivation limits. It was a huge and hidden plot armor in this novel.

The MC here also shows the badside of the humanity. He believe that he was an upright person, but he was even worst than his arrogant enemies. His arrogance was too much, to the point that he did not even put anyone in his eyes. Every little bit conflict, the MC would teach that person a lesson. He was always angry to the others overbearingness, but he was even more overbearing than the others. It seems that he sees that the other races were beneath him. The arrogance of the MC here was too much. He dont want the others humiliate him but he always humiliate others. Just a bit of conflict, and the MC would humiliate that person. He's even worst than his enemies, he's just a hypocrite person, he believe that he was upright but he was even worse than others. This MC also could not also control his emotions, even a s*upid person could easily see through this MC but many of the characters here was more s*upid than a s*upid person. The MC was also a narrow minded person, he always act without thinking advance thats why he was always in trouble. The worst MC of all, or let say the worst author of all, because he was the one who created that, and I think that the author think that this kind of MC was good, but the reality was far from good, its the worst. Childish, Arrogant, Petty, Narrow-minded, this was the words that fitted the MC the most, and I think that the author too. <<less

This is honestly one of my favourite novels in general from any site like WW, GT, and volare. I first read PW on the WW forums years ago, and I fell in love with the MC. He was extremely cute and hilarious to read about and I continue to enjoy the novel to this day.

Here are some concerns with the novel that I'd like to address for potential readers:

- the 'alleged' personality change of the MC. Yes, he changed from an innocent, fun loving child to a greedy, violent... more>> person, albeit he's still funny in my opinion. For me, it's not that his personality changed so much as he became more ruthless towards people who try to do him wrong. When his past was revealed, any person may become more ruthless and cruel afterwards, let alone a child. And he's still quite kind and nice to his family and friends, which is all that matters in these types of cultivation novels.

- the cruelty of the cultivation method via cauldron boiling: well, the people here in this world have stronger bodies and tougher personalities than us because 1) we are in a fantasy setting and 2) their world is much more dangerous as it's survival of the fittest. The boiling method works as the people there can take it and it doesn't actually harm them, but it hurts. No one is advocating boiling people in the modern world, but let's suspend our modern/scientific way of thinking with a novel set in a desolate wasteland with animals that just need to breathe on us to kill us.

If these things don't bother you, give PW a try. The characters are written uniquely and distinctly; the setting and the cultivation method is very different from other novels about daos; the MC is not some weakling who miraculously becomes powerful. Yes, the MC has some plot armour (I.e. He's not gonna die anytime soon in battles), but he works hard to get the weapons and benefits he has. He gets guidance from a strong guardian spirit, but essentially, most of his benefits are from his own merit. PW's MC is also a young kid who by chapter 300 is only around 10 or 11 years old. He acts a bit mature, but kids mature faster in tribal settings and even in our historical past when they married at 12. But there aren't any romantic attachments yet btw.

This novel needs some love so please give it a try when you have time. It starts off slow to some, but to me, I enjoy the author's writing style and the translator's interpetation of it, so I was hooked from the beginning to where we are at currently. Happy reading guys! <<less

Ok. After reading ALL THE CHAPTERS of Perfect World I'm going to give my unbiased and HONEST opinion about it. Truth be told it held a lot of promise at the start. However, it became a taxing when you get to the middle. The romance is uhh... *facepalm* I don't even know how to explain why he didn't even bothered to "make an effort" to make it work. It's just too annoying to even look at the so called "romance" of this novel.

Frankly, I'm trying to read all the "completed"... more>> novels here in Novelupdates and by far this is probably one of the most annoying titles I had read from the start till the last chapter. If you manage to survive reading the story up to the last hundred chapters, you'll just feel empty.

It's like... you're just reading it for the sake of completing it. In all honesty it was a very EXHAUSTING EFFORT to even finish this title. The last few chapters are a DRAG to read. Really annoying, really disappointing, really a waste of time and effort.

Hey, if you have nothing to do you can waste your time reading this title. I'm just writing this review to saaaveeee you the trouble of wasting your time. Seriously, It could HAVE BEEN WAAAY BETTER. My disappointment and annoyance can't be measured by years of cultivation atm.

Again, I'm writing this review just as I have finished reading all the chapters (which means I just finished reading the last chapter a few minutes ago). An honest advice from me. You're better of reading something like "The Strongest System".

Even though the ending of the Strongest System is lackluster, the story is still way better than this one. <<less

A unique novel for sure, and training/cultivating as well as the whole world setup is refreshing. We have a small child who grows up in a loving village in a forest full of beasts. To counter these beasts and gather food, the young ones have to train and harden their skin in a tub with boiling blood, which might sound awful, but in that kind of vicious and brutal world, that is required to get stronger, otherwise u might starve. (And dont come at me with child abuse, your comfortable... more>> western ideology is narrow minded, these guys dont get food at Walmart, but in a forest fighting in death battles. Its not like the people throw the children in the boiling blood because its fun).

Oh well, nonetheless, we have a cute child who trains and lived through a traumatic experience/betrayal by his family when he was only a couple years old and still is cheerful about life itself. Watching the small pure punk grow is just cute and u root for him.

Although, I agree with some fellas, his personality did change at the later chapters. Dont get me wrong, a child cant be pure until he dies and he ought to grow sooner or later, but this change was just so abrupt, without any significant time skip or anything. It felt like u are reading a different character, which is why it may have caused some people to dislike this kind of change. However, his change isnt so bad, he is still like 10? Years old on the later chapters and is in a very rebellious age, so being naughty is part of life. He is just doing what he wants, takes what he wants, and he backs it with his power. (Lets be honest, were we that different at that age? We wanted to be free and without rules from our parents).

Overall, good series. Defo recommend it. <<less

I would give it 3.5 to 4 stars if we talk about the chapters till which MC was called little guy. It was heart warming, funny and hooked me up. I liked the villagers and the world as well.

But after that it transforms into those arrogant young master novels. out of every 5 chapters 2 to 3 chapters are just describing battles. yes I mean 2 to 3 chapters not 2 to 3 battles. if the author did something like 2 to 3 battles in 5 chapters I wouldn't mind... more>> so much but he is fighting with arrogant youngsters. the fight also has no significance to the story. But no that s*upid fight has be explained in complete detail. there are people who have nothing to do so they just underestimate the MC. And the small fry villain also has to speak irritating nonsense. that s*upid fight goes on and on for 2 to 3 chapters.

this a*sh*le author only knows how to write s*upid fight scenes and arrogant young masters. none of the people showing even a ounce of intelligence. all the people from start till where I am lack integrity and act like villains or there are people like war king who act like dogs and servants.

Just for making small fights happen author spoils the story and make people act like fools. example:

Spoiler

shi yi is strongest talent. people respect him a lot, they also fear him. even archaic descendants acknowledge their inferiority.

shi hao defeats shi yi. shi hao flirts with yun xi in front of everyone (including archaic descendants). everyone, "how did this 'brat' have thoughts about our goddess"........

these weren't the exact words but the tone was something like this I am not sure even if brat word was used or not.

then there was a fight with detailed explaination about how the audience feels, how the small fry villain believes that MC is nothing in front of him and then MC wins.

Now just for this idiotic fight out of which no one gained anything, a entire group of geniuses was made to behave like ret*rds.

[collapse]

i especially came to read this novel because I heard it had good world building but no it just average rather according to me it would be around 1/100.

His family and wives are complete shit. always taking and never giving anything. his parents made such foolish decisions all the time that I do not know what to say. that grandfather made sacrifices but it is so excessive that I do not understand if some grandsons of his died and he is repenting or something. his wives might act like loved ones later (i havent read till the stage they confirm their relationships) on but earlier whenever MC was hurt, dead or in danger they never even shed a tear. yue chan's situation is special so I won't say much about it but
Spoiler

yun xi also acts like a thankless wretch in the celestial clan. yun xi: "please release him, he saved me!" ok my formality is done whatever happens to him I don't care. she could try to kill youyu and then threaten them with su*cide (this way they would lose the only two geniuses who could bring glory back to celestial race), she could try to help him escape or atleast cry and create a scene but she did nothing.

[collapse]

Whenever there is a crowd fight (say for some treasure) all of it comes down to KILL THE MC! the treasure could go and f*ck itself. if you belong to some power who is already MC's enemy then it is fine if you are scared that he will grow up and bring trouble but if you no relation with the MC why would you bring trouble by trying to eliminate some genius. rather if you are some person whose cultivation is a lot higher than MC you should give him something which might not be very important to you but would be very important to MC, when he grew up he could unexpectedly help you or something.

although these problems exist in almost all such novels but still it is irritating.

another thing is that it is game like and not in a positive way.

you want treasure? -> fight

strength increased?-> test yourself, fight

you obtained supreme treasure without fight-> will only be usable when you are stronger

it is very boring because of all this.

conclusion: just another 3rd rate story, read only first 200 something chapters, after that it is just garbage. if I could find those people who said this is a novel with good world building I would curse them non stop for a while.
Spoiler

wastelands are a prison, 8 realms are 8 prisons, now what, in higher realms will he find out that 8 realms were just components of a toilet in a prison room and higher realms are also a prison. just another way to show those higher and lower worlds from other novels.

[collapse]
Everyone wants to take MC alive and they think they can take his techniques. now if everyone says so it must be the truth right. but MC is never shown to extract abilities from a enemy even when he can overpower them because of some s*upid restrictions which he has also placed on his spirit. this proves that he does not take those abilities because he would extra overpowered. which also makes the magic system complete tr*sh.

now characters are tr*sh, magic system is tr*sh, there are no beautiful descriptions for setting or anything and just another small realm to big realm and to bigger realm and to more bigger realm type of BS. I don't world building consist of anymore things.

MC: 9/10

Writing: 1/10

plot: 3/10

world building: 1/10

close characters: 4/10

side characters (normal people, small fry villains etc.) : 1/10 <<less

Its good but the thing that annoyed me the most was that the author created a circle of useless friends for MC. Thats right, useless!! Why? Almost all of the life and death situations, the MC was only the one that make the move, and his friends just watch it from the sidelines and guess what, when there was a fortune in this life and death situations, it would be split evenly with his useless friends. And his friends was so fvcking thick-skinned to casually accept it like it was... more>> normal to do so. Fvck, its okay to split it, if they contribute something to acquire it, but they did not. This fvcking s*upid author seems want to create a useless friend for MC so that the MC could clearly display his might, but it disgusts me so much. His acquired treasure and pet was also fcking useless, the divine striking stone was too fcking useless, it would only move when the MC offered it a reward, and when it was already dangerous, it would always hid. And the Butterfly was too fcking useless too, always sleeping, the author said that it could find many medicinees, but it was always the MC who find the medicines. His family too was too fcking useless. And also his friends. I was disgusted by this author, he always made a companion for an MC but that companion was also too fcking useless. It seems that the author just want a character so that the MC could always show his might. You could already see that this author was also a fvcking disgusting show-off in real life. Fvck you man. I really want to beat you badly. The author made a useless and shameless friends for MC, and the fortune that the MC obtained was always evenly split between them. Hairy Ball and Little Red was a bit useful but this s*upid author left them in lower realm and made the MC's company was the useless and shameless stone and the useless butterfly. What are you doing s*upid author? Your so disgusting man. You dont even know the meaning of friendship? I think your always alone, or you always have a fake friends and family. Because I cant see the meaning of friendship and family in this novel. I only saw the shamelessness and uselessness of the friends and family of the MC here.

And here, there's not even a scheme here, its like all of the characters here was just a 'fist without brain'. Yeah, theres not even a little bit scheming here.

And I dont know why many people like this s*upid MC. This s*upid author seems wants to clearly display to the whole world that the MC he created was so fearless. To the point that it was already s*upidity. Come on man, there was a fvcking difference between the word 'fearlessness' and 's*upidness'. Why would I say that the MC is s*upid? There were times that the MC could resolve a conflict with someone clearly stronger than him just by stepping back, but he did not, he would still fight even though there were many people that wants to kill him that was watching. Its not already fearlessness, its simply a s*upidity. Lets say that he manage to barely win by some fluke, but what about after? There were many people would clearly attempt to kill him while he was down. In fact he already experienced it once and he almost lost his life. But he still did not learned from his mistake. He was still so fvcking fearless to the point of s*upidity. If not for some characters that intervene sometimes, the MC would already dead.

This s*upid author seems wants to copy Luffy of One Piece for his MC but was utteredly failed.

The emotional scenes here was so fvcking lame. The author did not deliver this scenes properly.

The author seems want the MC to be always on spotlight in this novel. There were many situations here that the MC have to become low-key but this fvcking author would create an annoying thing so that the MC could display his might again. There were not even some schemes here. If there is, this fvcking s*upid MC would already be dead. Why? The MC here was fvcking s*upid, he would always act without even thingking or planning. And this fvckin s*upid author would also say "the little guy was fearless, bold, and strong. He defeated many opponents". Sigh! I guess this s*upid author was too fvcking s*upid or naive that he could not create any schemes.

And the MC here was too fvcking arrogant. He was even more arrogant than the other s*upid young noble in this novel. He believe that he was undefeatable thats why he always acts without thinking. And when a powerful person arrived, he would seek help to others. Sigh..

He believe that he was already powerful when he was just at spirit transformation, but did not think that he would die with just a point of a finger of an old monster that want him dead. And caused a chaos again. Sigh!! I dont know if this author was s*upid or just really fvcking muscle-brain person. Fvck you!! I really want to slap you to awaken you in your s*upidity.

And this s*upid author seems wants to copy One Piece but because of his s*upidity, he really failed.

And read chapter 305. You will see the s*upidness of this author here. The MC here was already fused with the IGB the entire time thats why he was already strong. But because the s*upid author seems want to make people really think that the MC was unrivaled and fearless. He made it fuse with it again even though the MC was already fused with it. The reason why the MC could cause trouble in Rain Clan was because he was already fused with the IGB but this s*upid AUTHOR seems want to display the might of this s*upid MC so he created a projection of a Rain Deity and he made the MC fuse with IGB even though the MC was already fused with it. Sigh

One of the most tr*sh MC. Cant even control his emotions. Typical MC with arrogance to its highest level.

The emotional scenes was cringeworthy. I could only feel awkwardness in the emotional scenes. It seems that the author was really not good in this part.

The MC always wants to be on spotlight. He knew that many people want to kill him and still he always shows his face even though he have a transformation technique derive from Hairy Ball and repaired by Second Baldy. Sigh... <<less

This novel posseses a decent plotline but fails on its execution through the overwhelming use of tropes which lead me to giving a below average rating.

The troupes that bothered me the most are:

1) Arrogant characters - e.g. "How dare you kill/attack XX after he tried to kill you?"

... more>> 2) Plot armor / Lucky encounters - for a significant part of the novel the MC keeps finding/coming across things continuosly that "would make sect masters want to fight for it"

3) Bystanders in fights - repeated use of bystanders always following the same line of dialogue.

Before the fight - "It's impossible for the MC to win against XX. He is a genius...."

After fight - "OMG, MC beat XX. He is much stronger then I expected"

Also, the comedy in the novel is a bit forced because the author always uses variations of the same 2-3 "jokes" throughout the chapters and the ending is a bit incomplete (a few characters plotlines weren't addressed).

Overall, it's just a meh novel which I wouldn't recommend especially if someone already read several different titles, however it is not one of the worst titles you can find in here. <<less

I started this novel quite some time ago but took a break after reading the horrible episode of him losing his supreme bone. Damn, I felt horrible reading that. It hurt deep inside, as I'm a very sensitive soul... LUL

Bored or whatever, I returned just recently and guess what, I loved it. The story will only get better in my opinion and I love his little 'Devilish Personality'. It has resulted in some seriously disturbing outburst of laughter for my roommate next door. However, she will survive, unlike the main character's enemies, since he will try to eat and cook most of them xD

In the start, the whole universe was quite confusing, but don't mind the details and please just enjoy the story. I still don't quite get the whole symbol thing and how they exactly work. Don't even mention the cultivation, I've stopped trying to decipher it and go with the flow, and the flow is good ^^

To sum it up; I have thoroughly enjoyed my return to this novel and will be looking forward to any future updates. I fully recommend it.

Going to be honest.. I have no idea who the girl is! But I do know the main character at chapter 25 is still a child! Whoo! The story seems interesting and the characters seem a little bland at this point in time, but it still seems to be the early phases of the book. The world seems well thought out and interesting.

I do recommend this to people who would like a XianXia that Doesn't start off as usual :3

Was about to label this Novel as tr*sh, stop the review here and give it 2 stars, but after drinking a little of coffee and considering it a little will do a extended explanation.

As most of Novel the start is very good and interesting, but then the history becomes a mess, the Author starts to bloat the plot with holes and it turns into a convoluted mess of :

  • Words Count
  • Random Gibberish
  • Filler text
  • Repetitive pattern
  • Nonsensical moments
You will get to the point where you start skimming and will notice that is better that... more>> way, and later you just want it to be over already.

No romance, NONE! Whatever interaction you read will be simple fan-service of the MC teasing the girls, but the Author make every female into a Tsundere, by the time you see some development (1500+ chapters) you will just "Meeh" it.
Which is most Chinese Authors's Fault to keep MCs free from ties so they can move him around without Children who become forgotten on the history, STILL. Why then shove us women to the readers? Dont want romance? Just don't show beautiful Country toppling women and tease the readers, there are many novels who dont put women into the reader's mind at all. And they are awesome.

Support characters are useless, they become materials for increase word count, the Author will spend 2-3 chapters explaining things and random gibberish between characters. If you used to Hate Dragon Age Inquisition's Party Banter you will hate this even more!
No to mention the Cartoon-board Villains, these people don't have even an ounce of Brain, and this is Author's Fault for bad Villain Development.

The Plot is Horrible. MC dont have self freedom, he is dragged by the nose to every place. Always something to do, always something to train, always something to look for one after another, MC roam the same areas over and over. Too much Foreshadowing, by the time you see something happen, you already knew that it was gonna be THAT way, since the first Quarter of the Novel you get to the point of

f*ck This Author! By the time this happen, do you think we will be impressed? When you repeat the same thing many times?

I never quit, once I start to read something, but this novel is a massive waste of time as a whole, if Author compress the plot into 800 chapters of the most important plot, this would be a Bad Ass Novel.

Hate when Author drag the plot around. It ruins the Novel. <<less

Starts OK but then you start skipping 10 chapters while reading 1 and not missing anything from the story. Then let's talk about the story it self, every bad Chinese novel cliche there is has to happen nothing original just word count with no real story everyone is after the MC with 99% of ppl after him having no reason to be just for the sake of word count everyone and their grandmother's quite literally in some chapters are after him.

There's some really cool sh*t buried in this novel. There's some rather unique ideas regarding cultivation. Every 50 or so chapters you'll get a really good laugh. To the criticism of him changing his personality, I very much disagree. The setting changes, and he ages. It shouldn't shock anyone that a savage acts like a savage.

Chapters are absurdly long. Each chapter usually has a theme that has the same content repeated over and over again. Only to follow it up with "You have to understand..." then repeats himself again. This... more>> gets worse as the novels progresses. I wouldn't be surprised if the author was getting flamed in China. Narrator picks up a combative tone, and the content starts to feel a little underdeveloped. There are couple of cool action scenes, most of them are vague af.

I can't continue anymore. Best of luck with novel. <<less

The story was barely entertaining from chapter 1 to 90+

Starting from the school arc everything went downhill.

I didn't have an account before this to even review and I created one simply for this Light-novel which is beyond garbage.

... more>> The amount of round about explanations and writing the author used is beyond excessive, sometimes I had to skip chapters simply because of the useless fillers that repeat half of the chapter twice for a Guardian Spirit to die or for him to get done over with a conversation with someone.

If I had to count how many “Heaven-angering” sentences were written I would say its above the chapter count.

At chapter 88-91 The Mc’s personality took a complete flip. Everyone now say he’s a devilish brat while he steals, breaks, and destroys everything his sight lands on.

Its bizarre how the author or readers could even possibly continue putting their eye sight on such bullshit.

No one even likes the part of him being Naive-Kind or devilish.

IT TOOK one chapter from somewhere between 80-90 for his Nickname “Milk Baby” to be forgotten and replaced with devilish baby, how inconvenient and incompetent do you think this is?

I personally hated everything after chapter chapter 90 while it was barely readable to kill time beforehand.

World building and personality building is even more garbage.

you are given a village in the middle of nowhere with nothing but stone houses and cauldrons, towns 50-100 thousand lis away and their advanced countries plus academies 300 thousand lis away.

I am at chapter 108 and still don't know what is the point for all of this happening.

Sentence: Complete waste of time. <<less

This thing is just candidly bad. It has everything that people complain about in Xuanhuan/ Xianxia novels. The MC goes through this novel eating near all his opponents!

it's to be comedic? Because he is human and his opponents, often are not but if you simply think about the roles being reversed in species it becomes closer to what it is a story about a beast devouring others. Things are also too convenient this MC will need something Que random young master who is unbridled not knowing how high heaven, is... more>> craziest thing the thing he might need to the know the taste of that young master's flesh. This novel the author will spend so much time stroking mc's accomplishments or weighing him against others to highlight his worth it becomes near masturbatory "Oh young master, has slain his thousands, but Shi Hao his tens of thousands" or "Shi Hao is so smart, he can see that in the woods a trap was laid out to catch food with his Heaven Warping Genius (term will be mention probably well over a thousand times this novel in reference to him) "

The reasons for some of these conflicts are absurd someone once heard of the MC being disliked by someone so sent assassins after him just because of that no other reason. This guy also loves his righteous indignation he will get mad at opponents for not leaving him good things to have after he kills them truly, but then will raise biblical hell on the clan of one who tries to rob him. <<less

Good in the initial stages, but after the introductory arc this novel is written like a summer blockbuster - the plot is literally action scene after action after action scene. It may seem weird to complain about this when good fights are a cornerstone of the xuanhuan genre, but other good stories intersperse the action with world building, developing characters, alchemy, drama, etc, but Perfect World eschews all of these in its quest to pack its chapters with as many descriptions of fight scenes as possible. Fights will drag on... more>> and on and on, and random characters will be introduced or established characters will act out of character in order to drag the MC into yet another fight. It doesn't help that the fights are always injected with more than the usual amount of typical xuanhuan reaction p*rn ("How dare you be so arrogant", "You're seeking death", "Doesn't know the difference between heaven and earth", etc, etc). The opening arc is solid and built up the story to be quite epic, but the way the writing has developed leaves me quite disappointed. Read this if you want to kill your time with just another average xuanhuan story. <<less

Can't stand this anymore, it is well written I give you that, but the start is slow, then we get some very good moments and then it turns out MC is just as much of an evil as*hole as the villains, MC!why the hell were you angry at the wolf village kid when at the same age you do worse?

Won't argue with people claiming he was always an as*hole and only didn't act like that against his village (if that's so why are the scaled birds still alive?) But when... more>> I read something at least I want my MC to be better than the irredeemable evil guys or at least have a really strong reason to hate the world and acting like it, not be explained as child being naughty!

I don't need too much empathy to accept an MC but I need to see him being better than his opponents and having at least some moral limit, up to now I've seen neither. <<less

Weak writing. Author is not sure what he wants his characters to do (kill not kill?). 4 year old fighting it out with mountain-sized beasts and talking like an adult.

Awful story-telling. The kind that doesn't let go. From fight to fight without rest, from battle to battle all day long. There is no respite for the readers. There is no "victory" although the MC is always the victor but the battles never end.

One of the most infuriating reads I've had in my entire life. Thank god I dropped it when... more>> I did, otherwise I would have been torture myself more and more. <<less

This is a wonderful read. It comes out on par with great novel like TMW or CSG. I have read some of the other reviews before I read this and was really skeptical about reaching chp 90 because so many people were saying that the MC made sudden changes. When I finally got there, I sensed no sudden change in personality. This story is wonderful in the fact that it shows us the exponential growth throughout childhood, instead of the usual soul switched stories and then the MC suddenly gets op. No, this is fantastic in the fact that we get to see him grow up and even get to know his mysterious past which
Spoiler

was so sad and just plain depressing for the MC that I cried. Not like "Oh I'm so sad I feel like crying" feeling. I mean like there were literal tears falling from my face and onto my computer and coming from me, who has cried like a total of 15 times in my 14 years of life, that is impressive. Hats of to you perfect world for being the first novel to actually make me cry.

The sudden change thing that people are saying though, is bullsh*t because there was no sudden change. We got to see the MC grow up, and as we see that, we get to see his mischievous nature kind of build up to what it was. Now, granted, that mischievous part of him intensified quite a bit later on, it wasn't really forced. It was just him growing up into that nature. And we get to see a bit of his mischievous nature in childhood too. Plus, in the early chapters, we only get to see him deal with people in the village, who were actually really nice. Especially the elder guy who was like the grandpa of the MC. We only see that super mischievous part of him when he's dealing with absolute dicks who underestimate him to an extreme.

However, in the village, with all the people he loves, he has no reason to go into mischievous mode and wreak havoc.
Spoiler

I will admit though that some readers may have gotten a kind of serious nature from him from the time when he was training, that was just a kind of phase thing because he really wanted to get stronger quickly for his parents and the willow deity.
