Well its time for me to review one of my favorite novels. This one is a gem. Its better than 99% of isekais, but its such a shame that it isnt more popular. It finally got a manga recently, but still its quite late. The author also seems to have gotten lazy and he is relesing only a few chapters a years as of late which is a shame. Before I get to the meat of it let me just say if you want to read this then it wouldnt be a bad idea to start with the manga first and then decide if you want to read the novel.

Well with that out of the way let me first tell you if you should read this series or not. So this series is for people who like op MCs that dont have it easy. It aint a slice of life, but the story of a man thats been transmigrated into the body of someone thats destined to die. He also cant communicate normally with others as everything he says ends up 1000 times more mean than he intends it to which makes him seem like a male tsundere. The pacing is solid, the characters are fairly intresting and the action is just right aka not too long, not too short and exciting. The MC is op, but not to the point where he can win every time no problem and he strugles quite a lot in fights. To add there is romance and while its not the central point of the story, its quite good. There is no harem as can be seen by the tags. Honestly I cant recomend this one enough, to remember you arent gonna see a new chapter in quite a while and the translator usually releses the translations for the current chapter when a new raw chapter comes out so usualky the translations are 1 chapter behind the raw.

Ok so now that thats donne you can stop reading as im going to write about my memories with this series and its quite honestly a boring story, but its a precious memory to me. I remember finding this series a few years back after finishing to be a power in the shadows and I was looking for a new isekai. At the time I was still in highschool and it was spring break for me. I... more>> spent the whole of spring break reading it and even the first week of school. I usually associate this story with me sitting on my porch at noon just peacefully reading it. The calm and quiet time when I had nothing to worry about and it was just me and this story is something that for some reason stuck to me and I just fondly remember that time. There is another memory I have of this series thats when school staeted after spring break I was still reading the novel and I had a super boring IT class. The whple time I was just hopping it could be donne so that I could go back to reading to find out what happens next. Usually for novels I have a memory of a time I read it and what I remember it for. Whether it be the music I was listening while reading or hell even a bad toothache I had when I read a certain other novel (funny thing was it was the novel that I read right after this one that I remember for the horrible toothache, yet I still love that novel and could even remember the exact point I was at with that novel when I had the worst toothache of my life)

And now that im donne with this review I just want to ask you whu did you read all of this and why you havent started reading the novel instead and why you havent rated it a 5, called ir a masterpiece and started following the author on twitter, begging for a new chapter like the rest of us. Still I hoppe I convinced you to read it and if I did have fun reading and I hoppe you enjoy it. <<less

As looking through the other reviews will tell anyone, you'll either like it or hate it. I liked it at first, but like so many others, once the third arc came, annoying and contrived events happen, one after the other.

Spoiler

In the first and second arc, it's what you'd expect. He's a misunderstood hero type, of whom anyone who spends actual time with him as a comrade would come to understand in a basic manner.

At the end of the second arc, he made a s*upid decision that was obviously going to backfire (wearing the true enemy's armor on a battlefield, hiding his face with a mask, in order to expose them, but failing to remove said armor when he didn't need it anymore, and being discovered by his 'allies' and suspected of treason.) He ended up with the death penalty after a shady trial, and the third arc begins with a five year time skip, where we eventually find out he got to live by becoming the final boss' subordinate and test subject.

The original plot he was so worried about deviating from is in ruins, commoners and nobles alike despise him, unreasonable rumors concerning his 'misdeeds' are circulating everywhere, and he... is absolutely useless in helping himself. He's still trying to be hated by his fiancée', but the reason for that has already become a moot point. He's thoroughly and purposefully ensured his image is completely ruined, and he has gained absolutely nothing from it, nothing at all. He has potential connections, but no brains to utilize them properly, and even tries to cut them off for idiotic reasons that people mistake for him trying to protect them (that ain't it).

Basically, as was stated in the first chapter, the protagonist inside the smart-mouthed Harold is a completely average university student, a person who really doesn't know how to scheme, unlike what some commenters have mentioned. All his cheats came from his knowledge of the game and Harold's body's ability. He did well in utilizing the body given and the combat from the game, as well as a bit of the lore. But to have been cornered when he knew the whole plot of the game, right down to the identity of the final boss and his actions, this isn't just an average university student, it's an actual idiot. All he had to do was assassinate him in the first place, before that battle took place in the forest. Really, for someone who's whole purpose revolves solely around avoiding death flags, all he does is make himself hated and almost intentionally find himself more death flags.

This sort of self-abusing protagonist, I really don't want it. He's being portrayed by the author as clever, but I doubt anyone who makes it to the end of the second arc really thinks so. I'd go so far as to say he's a meat head.

If I could just spam 5 star, I already did. This is just soo exceptionally written. The plot, the concepts are beautifully executed. Every main characters are restricted by their role, and grows internally, that also includes the sub-characters. It is built up over foreshadowing and foreshadowing which makes the story remains inside more and anticipates it better. He also drafts the characters feelings well so we could also feel, and in a exaggerated manner. Setting wise, is albeit bad, but it nourished as the stick (referring to carrot and... more>> stick) so that the portrayal of feelings to be very exaggerated, especially the character monologues which is restricted from their roles that reeks of the generic "If I could just tell the whole world this" is making you feel like shouting in glee. Not just that, it seems like the author himself doesn't like to have his stories tasteless, so this chapters ended up really refreshing, and that piled up every chapter, that's why it makes you wanting to read it again and again. <<less

I'd give the first part of the story a high score. It's flawed, sure, but the setup was compelling, his difficulty working with or around the original soul was a new and interesting change from the formula, and I looked forward to how the huge changes he'd made and the workarounds he'd set up would help him as we moved closer to the original story. However, all the supposed buildup he'd spent chapters on falls apart when he literally forgets to plan for a major event he knew about years... more>> in advance, slaps together the worst plan ever to fix the event, and then just lets himself get screwed over bigtime

because all his braincells died that day. The novel is broken from that point on, it's like reading a completely different novel, and not a good one. Every likeable and interesting element is used to fuel the dumpster fire of everything that comes after. Maybe it'd be less harsh if I'd started the novel after the buildup fell apart, but the beginning is so good that it adds to my immense disappointment. Maybe it got better later, but I'm to upset with everything to care, especially since it feels like the only reason that whole mess happened in the first place was to introduce new harem members. <<less

This novel... has made me cry so many times. This is seriously my favorite novel ever.

This novel first worked its best to make the readers love its characters... especially the MC. In my opinion, the MC represents one of the best tsunderes I have ever read. His mouth always talks in an uncontrollably condescending and aggravating way, but he genuinely cares about the lives of the people around him. It's never cringeworthy with how much he cares about the people around him, and how he helps even the strangers around... more>> him, without even asking for a cent in repayment, because... well... it always just feels satisfying when seeing how people see through his harsh words and notice his kind intentions instead. The misunderstandings, as well as the actual understandings, are always so rewarding to read! It's a weird cycle: this novel made you like the MC a small bit, the MC is then put in a position to do some good deeds, these good deeds then makes the people around him see though the MC's horrible mouth and like the MC as well, this makes the reader like the MC's actions more because we can see how people genuinely start to warm up to the MC because of them, which then makes the readers like the MC more by extension, and then the loop repeats. It is all brilliantly executed!

My ability to like the MC is also further amplified by how virtuous he is... by how much he is willing to sacrifice to live out his goals. As a character in the novel put it, the MC is a person willing to go to any lengths to accomplish this goal. And, although the MC deluded himself into believing that he only cares about avoiding death flags, it's obvious how untrue that is.

...

I cried... so many times... because of how much he sacrificed. I felt for this MC harder than I felt for any other MC. I, physically, couldn't sleep because of what happens later in the novel. No, I'm not kidding; I could physically feel someone grabbing at my heart... my tears still ran down my face even after a few days from reading chapter 144...I kept trying to imagine potential happy endings at what could happen, in order to comfort myself, only to be reminded of what IS happing to the novel protagonist and the female lead. I literally couldn't keep the tragedies from repeating themselves in my head, which forced me to read more in the hopes of seeing some happiness. The novel then gives the MC and female lead some happiness, only to completely rip it away later without any warning! That's why, even though this novel currently has 116 chapters, I stopped myself at chapter 114 because I'm afraid I'll start crying again if there isn't an ending I can satisfyingly read to make myself feel better. I... need a good ending at this point... or I might not be the same person.

If you like tragedies... if you like hard-working MCs... if you like MCs with a goal... if you like a story about eventual true love between the MC and female lead... if you like a story with good world-building and directive... if you like a story that you can't predict (because, my god, this novel is incredibly hard to predict besides "the ending will be good")... then you'll love this novel as well! <<less

I suppose I don't really see why people like this novel. At fiirst I kinda liked it, but then suddenly I felt like the plot sort of fell apart?

From my POV, the novel kinda went like this:
Cool protagonist, gets transported into a game setting, forced to speak rudely since he can't speak like he normally does but he adapts quickly. [Up until this point I thought of this novel as nice, even if its weird at least there's a plausible explanation for all this] Then he starts doing things... more>> normal people won't actually know to help his territory [Which is crap I expect in every run of the mill Isekai novel, so didn't really bother me]. He goes and help his fiancé, his fiancé falls in love with him as expected, and he ignores his fiancé. [It was still okay at this point for me].
After that he goes and does some weird sh*t and f*cks up. Suddenly it became kind of like a sword art online story. You know, black swordsman that rumours are spreading all over about? Girls unexpectedly fall for him even if they didn't mean to? Except its kinda even worse. At least sword art online had good action scenes and animation. I spent like 10 or 15 chapters reading this dumb MC's f*cking up (which is probably a basic mistake a normal CLEVER protagonist would never do), then spend another 10 or 20 chapter reading about that weird girl who showed up from nowhere fret over her crush on Mr. Harold Stokes and drooling at the sight of him training while showing his abs.

I wouldn't recommend this, but read more reviews before you read this novel, since I guess whether the quality of this novel is good heavily depends on the reader's preferences. <<less

Good story. Why everybody say the MC is idiot, are you guys don't know BUTTERFLY effect, if the MC change the story then the other character is gonna change, MC cannot know the future and how the villain thinking. You guy just don't like how slow the story go, this novel deserved 3 or 4 stars depending on the readers, but I gave 5 stars rating to this novel because some of the very low rating reviews doesn't truly justify the plot in this novel. And lastly, please don't... more>> be a shitty reviewer who compare a novel which is not a cup of your coffee to a novel which you liked. Its like saying "your shitty shoes are worst compared to my sparkling white shoes", when your shoes might looks like craps in other people eyes. Nobodies actually cares if you stated a novel with similar premise as the one you're reviewing, it might be good for you, but not necessarily for others. It might even be dropped by other who liked this novel instead. So stop comparing a novel to another novel, cuz you gonna be bias.

Death flag started out quiet an enjoyable read. It had a balance of lightheartedness balanced with the impending sense of urgency. It made the story quiet enjoyable.

What makes it great is that it's an active protagonist, basically someone who moves the plot along with their own actions instead of getting dragged by events left and right.

Unfortunately, this starts changing at later chapters with the introduction of the main antagonist. The main antagonist starts controlling the story in the palm of their hands with the protagonist being dragged left and right.... more>> Normally, an antagonist being there makes a story interesting but only when it's done properly.

A protagonist usually works towards a certain goal with the antagonist trying to stop that goal from working. But in this story, it's the other way around. It's the antagonist who is working towards the goal, with the protagonist trying to get in the way.

Although the protagonist do deal with the situation as they come, it's still on the basis that it's a situation that all happens without his control. The story moves on without him, and he becomes nothing but a side character who is dealing with the aftermath.

Basically, it becomes uninteresting to read. He stops becoming the protagonist.

The story starts revolving around the main villain. It would probably be more interesting to see things in their point of view, even though what they're doing is despicable. At least, they're the one moving the plot forward. <<less

ALSO BE AWARE! THERE IS NO VILLAINY DONE BY THE MC IN THIS NOVEL, ONLY A JAPANESE GUY WITH SAVIOR COMPLEX THAT PRETENDS THAT HE IS SELFISH WAITING FOR YOU IN THIS NOVEL. Well, if you're expecting a good guy that will be forced to make a villain like decision/ to do some villainy, you'll be disappointed, this novel is template 'dai nippon has the kindest pepol in the world' isekai novel.

Evil that's not evil? MC that was degraded by others because of misunderstanding? (nah not really, author made every people who matters know of the issue in like 10 chapters after his name got smeared by fake news), MC who plans ahead? Idk, it still looks like that he's s*upid as f*ck because most of his plan wasn't even necessary if he took proper steps. There are many of such novels and this one can't even set itself apart from them. But still, decent read to pass your time. Actually, the more you think, the more you'll hate MC's decision making, so don't think too much when reading and pretends that our MC is mega big brain mastermind.

[collapse]

Misunderstanding everywhere. MC dual personality makes him looks like a tsundere, but it's not, those two were pretty much separate being, harold original personality was something like anger translator for the japan guy.

Spoiler

He is being soft every time, saving bunch of people for no real benefit, "THis coNcERns HumAn liFe, I oUghTa Help" - then proceed to make a complicated decision that has so many loose ends.

The most annoying part was author's attempt to attenuate the part that Japanese MC are peace-loving, salvation bringing, modern day Jesus. When push come to shove, the Japan guy inside will not even be tainted by blood, because he apparently has a "SWITCH" that sort of push the original villain personality traits to cover for him "ooh, it wAs pArtiallY harOld's doing, so Ima still pure" There's no mentality change to that original dai nippon no hito of him, he's still drunk af with his peace as his mental cleanliness was preserved by this simple setting, I was expecting a mental turmoil where peace-drunk person was forced in a kill or to be killed situation, or even break down under pressure that the original Harold always in, to be honest was expecting that author will bring this issue, and yet he just shoved this convenient solution to fix it.

And sometimes he'll say something around the line of "tHis is tO keEp the oRiGinAl StoRylinE inTAct", despite him already pretty much destroyed whatever left of that story line he keeps yapping about. I was bamboozled by the author during the earlier chapter when the MC even going as far to say "the more it diverges from the original story line, the more disadvantage I'll have", I thought he'll stay true to that word, but alas, inserting Japan pride as Jesus bunch is a must for every isekai novel, so he'll start being a philanthropist and actually wreck the story instead, pretty much the polar opposite of the villain he should be playing.

[collapse]

Author also didn't forget to tell us that the MC has twisted personality yet kind, indescribably mysterious bla bla and every girls love him in every single chapters.

Author often swaps to another person POV, this isn't necessarily a bad thing normally, especially if it gives different take on the story, but most of these other people POVs were awfully boring and unnecessary that you can actually skip it and didn't miss anything, it literally is just a reiteration of "Harold is kind, but he won't show it. I owe Harold, I'll work hard" or people's misunderstanding about him (in a verbose manner).

Spoiler

But remember, what was this series title? "My Death Flags..."???, well, there's none of it, this is just a harem RPG now, and to begin with, the only death flag for him was his death in the hand of hero (that was explained on early chapters) as a result of game plot, well, now everyone happens to love the MC, including the hero, there we lose our death flag. It will be nice if he's pushed into some nasty inevitable road of death, but the story only has 1 death flag from beginning and now that author already dampens the possible damage, he gone full ret*rd and made MC do some s*upid and dangerous shit, that was illogical... s*upid s*upid sh*t just so that he can keep "MY DEATH FLAGSSSS" as the tile. (title should be : MY DEATH FLAG (S) THAT I MANAGED TO AVOID BUT AUTHOR FORCED ME TO MAKE MORE)

[collapse]

TL;DR :

Spoiler

There's no development in MC personality because any possibility of mentality change was covered by Harold original personality trait, he stays being a Japanese Jesus.

Synopsis: Guy is transmigrated into the child version of a minor boss nobility villain of a fantasy RPG that he is familiar with. He knows his character will be killed by the protagonists of the RPG. He has plenty of years of head start before the game's main story actually starts, to make plans and change the events and outcome of this world. One twist, for various reasons, is that he cannot completely change his villain impression to other people.

Genre/Features: Transmigration, fantasy RPG world, magic and skill combat, some nobility... more>> fiefdom planning/scheming. Minimal romance so far, no harem. Some misunderstandings affecting the success of MC's actions. MC is not super OP. His default strength is no more than the original villain's that he is possessing. His extra strength comes from having a head start in training as a child, and his prior knowledge of events. Not much non-human interaction.

Issues: The writing does strangely switch from 3rd person to multi-first person in the middle of V2. Very little explanation of MC's real world life, how he got there, and no investigation on how to get back. MC just assumes if he makes it to the end of the game, he'll go back to the real world. Story could be more robust with that overall picture/goal. Translation: 5/5
[[5/5 = Minor spelling and grammar errors. 4/5 = occasional serious grammar errors, may need to reread sentences, but no loss of meaning. 3/5 = common serious grammar errors, some loss of meaning, but no loss of overall story. 2/5 = difficult to read, difficulty understanding parts of scenes. 1/5 entire scenes unreadable.]]

Recommendation: 4.5-5 stars
Well written, plot progresses smoothly. Not much filler. MC is resourceful and not entirely OP. Some readers may take issue with the limited amount of comedy, lightheartedness, and romance. Maybe minus half star for issues above (could have more stuff about previous life/skills and bigger picture).
[[5 star = most readers will enjoy, the rest will probably not think it a waste of time. 4 star = majority of readers will enjoy, but the rest will be hit or miss whether they thought it was worth their time. 3 star = hit or miss on whether a reader will enjoy, hit or miss for whether anyone thought was worth their time. 2 star = a niche audience might enjoy, the rest will probably find it not worth the time. 1 star = even the niche audience may not enjoy.]] <<less

This is the best light novel I've read yet. Sticking the MC with a haughty, arrogant mouth is brilliant, if only because it creates such conflict between his word and his deeds, and makes the side characters work through their feelings and reactions. The writing too, though in translation, is excellent. Characters (like Cody, for example) always speak and act like themselves, however many chapters pass between appearances; and Harold's snark is wonderful -- inventive, cutting, and never cheap. Finally, I genuinely have feelings about several of the characters. Not... more>> "waifu" type feelings -- genuine admiration and sympathy. There's rare skill on display here. <<less

One of the best stories I've read here. The main character isn't some piece of tr*sh who stumbles into OP goodness with his shoe laces tied together. (Yes, I know. The initial chapters were good. Afterwards the story fell apart and it was not appealing to me. Romance though mentioned is too slow. I like reading novels with romance and plot going hand to hand or completely no romance. But this one had the romance between characters but neglected it.
