its same, like the other toika novels, but different.

suffice to say that MC is more OP than your standard toika MC.

Well, I like it better than any of Toika's other novels so far but that's not really saying much. i was hoping it wouldn't be harem seeing as he's empty down there and all but despite that and having no s*x drive because he's undead he still has every female who meets him chasing after him. I was enjoying the story until the cliche rom-com harem stuff got in the way of the actual plot. Dropped.

I think I'm starting to become disgusted by harem settings.

This is the normal isekai setting, which starts very good in the first stages of worldbuilding, goes on quite strong with the establishment of the MC entourage and their growth and devolves into a dull second half where growth becomes unexplainable and sudden, lovers sprout like mushrooms after a good day of rain, and where you're just reading on to say you've finished it.

Yeah, this is just a crack fic, wishfullfillment BS story.

Only thing good is how the system works, but that too makes the entire power structure of the world ridiculous. A single tier above another means that guy can wipe out hundreds of thousands of people. Even though a single tier above can at most be double the stats of the previous tier with an additional 30% modifier. No matter what you think, you can't go around faceslapping armies.

Now with that out of the way.... What else would you expect from... more>> a wish fulfillment? The MC levels up crazy fast, gets insane powers and ever word out of his mouth is a talk no jutsu. If you expect anything else, you came to the wrong story. Nothing can be taken seriously and there is no tension what so ever. A complete waste of space.

Overall, the ending is rushed beyond belief. It is in one of the top ten worst endings I've read. The MC is Tier 8, turns into tier 9 then tier 10 (a God). He fools the world and one shots the main antagonist off screen. Now the whole world worships him.... The End. No, seriously, that is literally what happens.

Rate 1.7/5 - For being a complete waste of time. <<less

Alright its a pretty decent novel, I cant be asked explaining why I think its a decent novel but just know one thing.

The ending is the biggest blue balls you could ever get. So don't go into it expecting a satisfying ending.

I dropped this awhile ago, so I'm putting down my thoughts before I forget completely.

This is a very mechanistic novel, which might be okay, but here the mechanism is very obscure and random. So we hear a lot about his skills, but then they merge or new variations are found and so on more or less randomly. It just feels like nonsense. There is no plan, even his intent is unclear. I wouldn't mind if there was a bit of this, but there is a lot. This is a good... more>> chunk of the novel.

The characters are not likable, the interactions aren't fun. Maybe this is justified story wise due to the MC being a skeleton and hence less emotional, but if the story is not fun to read, then I won't be reading it. <<less

Maybe I haven't read far enough into the story, but both the fights and plot are lackluster. Whenever the "plot" goes further its just expanding on things you already figured out on chapter 2. The plot isn't very exciting in the first place, as well as being pretty slow.

Moving on, the fights. There is zero tension in any fight this character will have. Why? He has 99 lives. If that doesn't automatically remove the tension from any fight the character might have, theres more. Whenever he encounters a difficult monster,... more>> he suddenly learns a new skill that conveniently lets him win the fight.

The constant addition of new skills, level ups, and stat increases taking up several paragraphs a time doesn't really help the story out either. Now, I don't know about everyone else but I'm not super interested on skills to the point where it needs to state every single levelup for every skill and every stat increase. There are ways to avoid this absurd amount of repetition.

The final thing that really annoys me is how the main character complains. A lot. He'll obtain some super overpowered skill and start complaining just because it isn't omnipotent. Despite essentially becoming immortal, the first thing he does is complain about his appearance. It gets really annoying.

Despite all this, it seems like a good novel for some. However the way the plot, leveling system, and skills mix together just doesn't really work for me. It always seems like the same fight is repeating over and over just with a different color. <<less

This one starts pretty fast at the beginning, but then immediately goes into a crawl. Somewhere close to the beginning the author started throwing battle stats and skills that only an avid fan of min-maxing diablo-game characters would love. To the reader, it almost seemed pointless. At some point, a level up message can go a full page. You have leveled up. You gained *** and *** and **** and *** and your **** is now **** and this skill has now transcends *** and become *** and joined ***... more>> and you are now better at *** and this allows you to ****. With this, you are now known as *** and a title *** has now been added ***....

Yeah. Somewhere there I started wondering why I was even reading this book.

Then,... it picked up again. The accumulated skills started to take shape and make some sense. The humor started to take shape. This is action comedy at its finest, really. It is very cleverly written, and I think the only 2 criticism I have is I think 80% of the level up write up is unnecessary - I skimmed them only to get an idea of the new powers acquired. I mean, does it matter if your agility is now 8000 and it has been increased by 10%? when you have no idea what that means in the big picture of things, like, what the enemy agility is like? Also, the ending was a bit short. Its not a cliffhanger, there are no loose endings, everything is resolved, but... maybe I have gotten used to authors writing 3, 4, 5 epilogues of what happens next. This one didn't have it. Thats all. But it didn't mean it was not ended cleanly, and well. It did. Just... no after credit scenes, thats all.

But the characters are smart. And funny. Character progression? Well, this one didn't need one. To begin with, character progression is a cliche writer's tool to write about a cliche characters with imperfect personality who had to mature into an adult through various circumstances. Its as boring as dragonball - (no, I love dragonball), where you know this imperfect character will somehow mature during the course of the read.
No, for most, the main characters in Stop, Friendly Fire were mature. They didn't need to mature - what needed was for the reader to get to know them. Through their acts, we get to know their personalities, and its great. Its funny too. The banter between characters became something I really look forward to.

Highly recommended.

..i wish there was epilogue 2.

Spoiler

The closest I can think of, of Lee Shin Woo, is Loki, the god of mischief from the norse myths. As his personality and the way he resolves his situations starts to define his level ups (not the other way around!), his skill becomes more and more accommodating to his joker/loki/mischievous personality. Readers started getting excited with how he would resolve the next situation. Its a joker card in a deck, really. You don't really expect things to happen one way, and he'd resolve it in a novel, joker-ish way too.

There were a lot of small issues had here and there, but overall I'd say this was one of the best reading experiences I had and was the reason alongside 'Solo leveling' and 'Praise the Orc!' for why I got into Novels in the first place.

The ending is kinda bad tbh, but I can say I enjoyed the rest of it quite well. I hope you do too :)
(But if you don't, that's fine. You'll just have to find a different series to enjoy instead. Good luck!)

Do you enjoy:
1) Isekai (transported to another world) ?
2) Game mechanics?
3) Really deep game mechanics and grinding (+22 health, lvl 2 Mid tier Dark flame skill upgrade, Sword +250 damage, gain access to secret shop, Inventory) ?
4) Really OP MC that plows through all enemies while laughing and has super-duper plot armor?
Spoiler

5) So OP he kills 2 final bosses withought a fight in 1 paragraph?
6) Every one lives at the end?

[collapse]
7) Harem (not too big and only after he gets power and saves the day) and and a little snu-snu?
8) MC is not a friendly, shy, stuttering idiot who is afraid of killing enemies and using allies?

Then friend, do I have good news for you!

Minuses
1) I got a little bored of ling fights, and started skipping a little.
2) Ending was kind of rushed.
3) Deep game mechanics, some will be frustrated. Not me! (MMO junkie here)
4) No deep world-building.

A decent novel that kept me entertained for the most part. Wish there was more failures or defeats on the MCs part to make the journey feel like it was not handed to him. Other than that, even if its rotten, it's still a herring.

Stop, Friendly Fire is another one of Toika's novels, and one of the better ones at that. It has many positives and negatives, and some things you could take or leave, which I will list.

Positives

+Good action

... more>> +Non-dense Protagonist

+Good Comedy

+Simple but interesting world

+Side Characters keep up for most of the story power wise

+Short

Neutral

*Level-up system w/ stats and skills

*Transmigration

*Harem

*Light on details

Negatives

-Weak ending

-Poor characterization for enemies and side Characters

-A lack of meaningful suspense

Overall good novel, a nice refresher compared to something like ISSTH or CD. The novel does well at what Toika excels at, which is comedy and action. Don't come into this expecting grand 100 chapter chase scenes and universe shaking feats. It's a small, contained power fantasy that is there to entertain and nothing more. <<less

Toika best novel for me. The skeleton joke make me laugh hard and good jokes.

Starting with a good premise, but ends with a not so satisfying ending and no side stories....

Definitely recommend this novel, though I don't know why many people dislike it.

I usually read new novels to ch 100 and I couldn't even make it past 19 for this one. The story is too simple and there's no real challenge. The MC keeps meeting more powerful enemies, but there's nothing new about each encounter and it becomes very repetitive. There's a few unique encounters sprinkled in, but, somehow, there's no tension and I can't gain any interest in the story. Maybe the pacing is too slow or the sarcastic comments from MC lightens the mood too much, but it just doesn't... more>> feel like the characters are challenged or have to struggle much. <<less

Its okish at the start, but quickly gets repetitive, and if you've read any of the authors other novels, it probably feels even more repetitive.

Side characters are quite one dimensional, typical loner and secretive for no reason MC, levels quickly start to mean nothing at all, only the MC's skills compound on each other and everyone else doesn't have a clue.

I recommend this novel for anyone looking for a light hearted fun novel. MC goes from weak to strong and ends up tricking many of his strongest enemies into fighting each other. Good translation and not too many plot holes either. Although many of the side characters seem one dimensional. And the harem/romance is a joke: "Your bones are so smooth..." Also, I feel the novel degrades later on and starts getting trippy and nebulous: "I am undead, I am life itself. I have good karma, I have bad karma.... more>> I sever the existence of all things, I am creation itself. I use acid to melt my enemies, I was on acid when I wrote this..." And while the ending did resolve the plot, it also left a lot of things up in the air, particularly about the characters. I feel cheated not getting to know what happened to them. This novel could have used a few extra chapters to wrap things up. Besides the above, I did have a few other gripes:

Spoiler

Some of the good guys betray their own and turn into bad guys. One of them has a clear, albeit selfish reason why. However he manages to rope others into betraying their own as well. And no reason is given for their betrayal other than the bad guy needed to run a dog and pony show and wanted to have a spy inside the enemy's camp. Hello!!! Spies do not just appear because it would be convenient to have one! And the bad side was so reprehensible that it would take something VERY alluring to make someone switch sides like that. Yet instead the author brushes this a side so the MC could have another witty moment: "I already knew those two were running a dog and pony show on me. The fools, I saw through it all."

All enemies drop these two things: money and bones. And it just so happens that those are the two things MC needs most. Even when all of the other heroes hunted enemies they always get the same thing as well. However bones are useless to the other heroes so they sell them to the bone shop. Why did this shop even buy bones in the first place? Apparently god never had any intention of sending an undead hero so why was that shop buying bones for years?

There are some rare drops called tokens. Yet after being here for mere days, MC collects more tokens then the other heroes did in dozens of years. Why?

I love this novel.

The MC getting ridiculously strong over a short amount of time isn't the focus here. It's the comedy that you get as he gets ridiculously strong over a short amount of time.

This is easily one of the funniest novel I've ever read. Though the ending seemed really rushed and not as satisfying as I'd hoped.

At the very least, I wanted a conclusion on his relationship with the partner that he's spent literally the entire novel with. But the author left that open instead. *Sigh*

I really enjoyed this one for the most part, but as it progressed past chapter 200 it started to feel a bit rushed. Powerful villains started seeming incompetent compared to the protagonist, and all other characters seemed to be present just to hype up the protagonist more.

And as others have said, the ending is far too abrupt. It genuinely feels like there's 2 or 3 chapters missing just before the epilogue.

However, despite all of this I'd definitely recommend this novel. The early chapters really are the best part, and because... more>> the start is so great I can forgive the failures of the later parts, and all in all it's still a very memorable and fun read. <<less
