The first time they met, he was a downtrodden prince everybody bullied whilst she was a small palace maid responsible for washing the clothes of the people in the palace.

Twenty years of companionship; he is the only one capable of influencing her emotions. For him, she is willing to immerse her hands in the blood of others, to help him rule this world.

Even though she wasn’t the one he loved, and she wasn’t the one he married, she insisted on remaining by his side, aiming to become the one and only woman capable of standing by his side whilst he held court and the one and only woman in his harem – even if doing so would cause her to get insulted by the entire world.

However, that person whom she loved so much, that person for whom she committed all sorts of preposterous acts for – wanted her to die.

He said, “In this lifetime, I don’t wish to see you ever again!”

She returned to him as a spirit, yet he begged for another lifetime together.

“If we have another lifetime together, I want you to love me and respect me from a very young age, and help me clear all the obstacles standing in my way. You would be forced to watch me love one, and marry another – but both of them would not be you. You must love me so crazily and so deeply that everybody knows about it, and yet you would never be able to truly receive my entire love and affection. On innumerable occasions, you would be misunderstood by me, and hurt by me. The only few tears you shed in your entire lifetime would be for me, and ultimately you would have to die for me. Even after you die, you would not be allowed to rest in peace – instead, you would transform into a spirit and return to my side… Only if you do all these, would you be able to compensate me for what I have done in this lifetime.”

"comedy posing as a tragedy"

I definitely noticed that too like in absolutely somber scenes especially at the end we would have the female lead (Gu Hongjian) observing and saying some of the funniest stuff. Especially that plot twist had me laughing so hard. Also, the truth bombs that the moonlight dropped. I was like yes!!! Girl this is all so absurd.

(Not to say the Male lead, Lin Si Ze was a fool. He was calm, mature and did have some brain cells. But his idea of romance was just so illogical. And really it was such low EQ that even after 20 years he couldn't figure this stuff out. Especially their reason of fallout wasn't even so huge. It just made sense that Gu Hongjian would not leave and try to wait it out for him to calm down)

But yes, I think this is the first time I

didn't even feel the sign of a tear (still chuckling at some of it tbh). Because that's how I saw it, the female lead getting to silently observe it all, realise how absurd it all was and finally being able to let go once and for all. I was genuinely relieved for her in the end. I did enjoy the flashbacks though. I think they were necessary to build context. In fact it is one of my complaints that in these kind of novels, we don't get enough details and that leaves us with a shallow understanding of the characters and events to unfold. Plus did appreciate the flashbacks for showing how badass and cool the female lead was.

It also etched out the female and male lead's bond quite well, from childhood companions, to lovers, to Emperor and his minister.

In fact I thoroughly enjoyed their dynamic in the past when things were fine. They were definitely equals even though there was a big difference in their social positions. I adored how they were once each other's comrades and partners-in-crime. Like their tacit understanding during their emperor-minister relationship. Loved that. I do feel sad for the ML

in the sense that he can never have a companion like her again. And even though he made the promise. I don't think even without him taking his life. He would live that long without her. It's not just the regrets. They both only had each other for 20 years. They have no friends/no family per se. They were in a way too dependent on each other we can say. So I don't think it would be too long before the emptiness and loneliness eats him up. Unless he starts to live again and make new connections which I highly doubt he would do.

So, that's how I see the story ending for both of them. In the end though. I would say it was an engaging read overall. And I definitely enjoyed it all from beginning to end! <<less

This is a very pitiful and simple story that starts from a misunderstanding. And the moment it starts you can somewhat tell what's going to happen at the end.

I usually like it when the ML finds out the truth and gets abused because of his previous wrongdoings but here I even wanted him to not know about ... more>>

the fact that the whole time it was the MC that had helped him in the past and not that Zuo girl

[collapse]

I think that both the MC and ML have their wrongs so even if the MC is pitiful, the ML is just as much pitiful as her.

There should have been an extra for this story

I cried so hard for the last 10ish chapters. This novel... honestly I could see its trajectory. What's charming is each individual scene and reminisce as it reveals pieces of their dysfunctional relationship. I really loved the descriptions of their childhood and their present and even when I was on the first chapter I felt kinda angsty. I've always had a guilty pleasure for tragic and one-sided romances. This story is one of those that you'll know almost immediately if you'll like it. I know I did

Beautiful. Bingeworthy. Tragic. I cried while reading this, the cheerfulness of the FL, coupled with the ignorant ML, despite the circumstances really brings you on an emotional ride. Prepare tissues, you'll need it.

I should avoid tragedy tags because I always end up crying.

Loving someone for 20 years, and believing the other party only feels resentment and hate for you is a terrible fate. It's even worse when you realize that it didn't have to be like this but you are powerless to stop it.

This story was painful to read, yet I couldn't stop myself from reading because I wanted to find out what the ML's reaction would be. There was a lot of flashbacks, that while I recognize it was important as... more>> it showed their history together, I don't think all of the scenes was necessary. I was blown away by the twist near the end and it just made me feel sad all over again. <<less

My teeth hurt watching/reading the ML basically emotionally torturing the foolish FL almost the entire chapters. ... more>>
Spoiler

afterward he emotionally tortured himself due to self blaming for causing the FL's death. To me this was a big plot hole: the ML sending FL to a dangerous war just to make her go away from his sight? He never wanted her to die yet he sent her to WAR?? Unreasonable.

[collapse]

The second FL, the white moonlight in the ML's heart, was far more refreshing to read. She decided things... decisively. I also like the 'second male lead', the clever scholar. The only two people with straight mind, I think.

5 stars for making me with a stuffy chest the whole morning. <<less

The way the author pulled off the tear-jerking feelings here is just T-T

I just wish that there was some kind of final closure like a few lines on how Lin Size lived his life after they said farewell to each other for the final time. Still, the epilogue is amazing. This is a tragedy novel so expect the norms and enjoy the novel^^

A novel that made me cry so much. A sad story of a girl waiting for the person they love to turn around and realise there is someone who loves them unconditionally.

I just finished crying my eyes out TT____TT

The story is so beautiful and unique.

At first it might seems rather messed up, but don't give up and continue reading it, because it will gradually make sense! The story also seems as if it keeps dragging on, but in the end you will see, that that's just the way it had to be, because that's the only way which can make this story this good.

The relationship between the two main characters is quite confusing at the beginning. With each chapter you will... more>> discover that despite being complex their feelings are also very simple. And in the end it's simply heartbreaking.

Through the other characters you will realise that the FL is rather dense in her own way. I love her for being unlike other female characters (no crying around, depending on the ML or being clueless whenever it is more practical that way...) and at the samt Times it feels like I have to cry or get angry or hurt on her behalf.

Spoiler

there's just one thing I'd criticise. The whole tragedy is built on a misunderstanding which kind of disagrees with the characteristics of the Main characters. I rather can't comprehend how the MC could believe that he loves the second FL that much just due to that incident. What the second FL says at the end pretty much sums up my opinion about that whole affair. How can one soup compare to twenty years?

Well, all in all it is still a really good story.

I totally recommend it! <<less

I honestly don't know why I chose to torture myself. Reading the synopsis, it's obvious that there are onion-wielding ninjas inside this novel. It's bittersweet and it has a lot of twists. It was worthwhile reading this. I don't usually like tragedy and angst but this just gave me the right feels. Sometimes, no matter how painful it is, we must let go. My throat clenched painfully and my heart feels sorrow after reading so I need to immerse myself in comedy. Life's too depressing.

Hesitating to read it and looking at the reviews first? Have a tissue box on hand and click as fast as you can to begin reading! (Tldr; at the end)

Plot: A bit cliché BUT it's not unbearable. The biggest plot device in this novel is the same as any other tragedy, a big great misunderstanding. The misunderstanding isn't so bad that you want to flip your desk but it's crucial as a plot device. I agree with the translators note that you can't just skip to the end and... more>> see ML's reaction because the build-up is essential to all the emotional reactions it'll provoke at the end.

Spoiler

I did hate that the misunderstanding could've been easily solved but I guess the ML wouldn't have believed her. It's also partially the MC's fault to an extent for ignoring her own feelings but hey, I guess that's what love can do to you.

[collapse]

Characters: The MC is the most selfless individual. I don't agree with the above review about how the MC is worthless because love makes you do things for people even if it means hurting yourself. However, I can absolutely agree with the fact that ML is scum.

Spoiler

Karma really hit the ML once he found out about her death. MC deserves to live another life without him because he's not grateful for ANYTHING she's done. Without her he wouldn't have ascended the throne or even made it that far. *massive eye roll*

[collapse]

It's a shame that the translations have been paused or dropped at this stage so I couldn't really read the proper ending, just excerpts and summaries. You really do need to read it from start to finish in order to fully appreciate the authors (and the translators effort!).

Conclusion: It's a 5 star novel for me. It brought out my masochistic side by leaving me to cry, but in a good way. I would definitely recommend it if you want a tragedy or even someone like me who loathes tragedy and runs away once they see that tag.

tldr; Cliché in a good way to understand the MC and her struggles. Ending is a tearjerker when read from start to finish. <<less

I'm kinda hoping that there are side stories that someday she really became a guy and the emperor the girl. And the MC will do what she had promised to the emperor when they meet again, if ever in their next life. Nevertheless, I hope for the MC the best among the rest and be happy in her next life and all of her next lives. Curse that guy and go to hell. Lol.

I recommend you to read this one. Lol. To encourage communication with your partner to avoid misunderstandings like this one. Hehe. <<less

The only reason why I'm giving 4 is because my heart is aching too much for me to give a 5. This is a really great novel for angst lovers though. The ending isn't a typical ending either and really just hits RIGHT IN THE FEELS. Well, I'm unsure if the translations will continue to do the story justice but so far the translator has done a great job.
