On her wedding day, she was humiliated; her status as the legitimate wife was instantly changed into that of a concubine.

“Who*e! Marrying you is my life’s shame!” These were the hurtful words that came from her childhood sweetheart, now husband.

….

Jiejie, jiejie, thank you for your sacrifice. Jiejie, if you’re kind then go. Meimei will replace you and take good care of your husband, to help you enjoy the blessings that you are unable to enjoy!” these words spat out by her smiling cousin made her whole body feel cold.

….

“You are shameless! There is no need to say anything! From now on, our Shen family will not have you as our daughter! Someone! Throw out this shameless woman!” These were her relatives?

Becoming the target of criticisms, and being submerged in a small lake, she realized that all of this was the result of another person’s scheme – but it was already too late!

Instead of dying, she went back to the past, back to where both feelings were still alive and were loving towards each other; back to when she was not yet an orphan but the doted on Di daughter of the Shen family.

No matter what, in this life, she would never allow anyone to hurt the people she loved. And those people who harmed her in the previous life, she would make them pay the price!

There's nothing special about this story, it's the same typical rebirth story that's been told countless times, so if you're looking for something different, this is not it.

However, the translation is done pretty well (which is why I gave it 2 stars), and I actually rather enjoyed reading the first 30 or so chapters before meeting the ML. I especially liked to see how considerate and loving the MC's father was w/ his wife.

BUT, the thing that brings down this story is the MC's age and that of her 'enemies'.

In... more>> the story, MC comes back to when she's 5 - yes FIVE years old. This is why I have such a hard time accepting that people wouldn't be weirded out that a five year old would suddenly become so smart and mature. But actually that's not the worst part - it's when the scum childhood sweetheart and fake best friend appeared that I couldn't take it any longer.

The childhood sweetheart is 8 while the fake best friend is 5..... and the author writes them as these scheming little bastards.... and I just can't take it seriously! Even when they meet the ML at the childhood sweetheart's bday party, the 5 YEAR OLD fake best friend wants him as her husband..... like wtf???

She's 5 yrs old, she shouldn't care about getting a husband / fiancé, AND she would probably not even be interested in boys (if at all) at that young of an age!

Thus it makes the story way too unrealistic - I just don't understand why the author had to make the MC so young, it only makes the scheming by the MC and those around her of similar age seem utterly ridiculous. Like, I'm supposed to believe a bunch of children will be so scheming at such a young age..... OK.

Also, another reason I dropped this: the ML. He's like 9 yrs older than the MC, so 14 when they meet and he's already interested in her, even tho she's just 5. pe*ophile anyone? :) <<less

It's the same as Chu WangFei and Shen Yi Di Nu. Same old story is repeating over and over again. The summary itself is no different from other rebirth novels. Evil mei mei stealing husband, evil mei mei killing you. Rebirth. Revenge. Meeting ML. Taking revenge together. Nothing special. If you're a rebirth lover then this will be for you but if you're searching for something unique then this isn't for you.

I dont know how ancient chinese children behave and think, but for a 10year old boy to think like adult man preparing to eat a woman is somewhat disbelieving..... And his 5 year old liltle sister to be able to scheme and think of evil minds toward another children............

Or my childhood was just too comfortable, naive and innocence compare to fiction characters XDD

I wont say anything of the rebirth 5 year old MC, that is certainly not a 5 year old mentality.

This is the only novel which I have binged read (if that's a term) without putting down even once due to too much cringe, angst or irritation.

So here's what I liked about this novel:

  • Not draggy storyline. It goes on a medium pace covering the different phases of SJ's life with time skips in between which I got confused a lot when reading raws.
  • She has the most ideal family I haver ever encountered. Her father, mother and brothers, everyone is adorable in their own way.
  • SJ is the my favourite protagonist ever. She is neither a white Lotus nor a face slapping ruthless person. I love how she doesn't go high profile right after rebirth like other MC's and forbears, schemes and acts only when she is able to take down the villains in one full swoop without alarming her enemies and giving them no room to maneuver. Another reason I love her is her ability to conceal her strengths and how she doesn't put all her cards on her table. She is not omnipotent and occassionally will need the help of YW when she is counted by her enemies.
  • YW is also a great character who once decided cleanly breaks off any emotional entanglements with his poisonous family. He too has to forbear and suffer a lot in his growth phase. He is a little pushy but not the arrogant CEO type MC (who forcefully kisses or sleeps with heroine). He respects her and doesn't do anything that can even slightly tarnish her reputation. He ruthlessly tramples on any peach flowers that fall his way and doesn't let any misunderstanding grow between them. He considers SJ his salvation and fully devotes his heart and soul to her.
  • Even though Even though the female MC is able to take down all the enemies on her own with little help from YW, YW is the one to take down the final boss.
  • In times where females are the greatest bane of other females, Our MC is lucky to have met great female friends who love and support her all the way to the end. I love how they are mutually dependent on each other.
However there is still a couple of things which made me a little disappointed like a meat stuck between teeth after a great meal:

  • The friends deserve an extra for their own story, especially the male s*ave she bought. His background was never revealed.
  • Her mother is pregnant if not rehabilitating after delivery pretty much all the time. She is pretty much a prop in the story with no proper role whatsoever. Even though she is a great person in her own way.
  • The time skips were a little too frequent which left me confused at times (maybe because I was MTLing).

First of, let me say just don't read if you can't stand 5 year olds running around scheming here and there. Of course we expect our MC to scheme as a toddler but seeing other kids doing it is just so far out of realm of possibility. I could even grudgingly accept if they are 7/8 because before 6 years old kids just don't have any memories.

Secondly, if you hate fillers after fillers after fillers don't read this. Author tend to repeat the same point 4 to 5 times so... more>> eventhough the chapter seems long, there's only several useful sentences. I'm able to read through everything by just reading the first sentence of every paragraph.

Thirdly, at least she has a nice nuclear family. I love how loving her parents are.

In the end I have to drop this novel simply because I just can't get into the logic of this world. Who in the right mind care to look at 6-7year old kid talent show? I don't understand why author seems to never be around children, is she also a child thus somehow don't know/remember she was actually an embarassment when she was a kid? <<less

After “Malicious Empress”, I started this novel with high hopes, but so far the pacing has been very slow (with rather drawn out dialogues) up to the currently translated ~50 chaps or so. Example: As of chap 53, she is still age 5... So far all of the “conflicts” have been with 5-8 year olds...

The English translation is super high quality and very readable - many thanks to the translator for the hard work!!!

Ok. I actually wanted to take one star due to the many time skip confusions (I felt the plot was really good, but either to rushings or problems connecting different time frames when a time skip occurs the author has troubles describing how much time has passed exactly).

I actually agree with Dizaster's review on this novel, and I disagree with the people who say this is "one more reincarnation novel", here the protagonist doesn't have a computer like memory with all dates and times of events that happened in her... more>> previous life registered, she doesn't have master skills to back her. Her ML is not a magical plot armor, he grows up with the progression of the story, and the only reason he is able to help her a lot in the beginning its because her enemies are weaker.

I was quite pleased to see how human this story was, it was filled with the protagonist struggles with herself, it was real and believable. In the beginning it reminded me a bit of "Rebirth of Han Yuxi", where the protagonist enters this life with very low level of knownledge due to her passive position and her dislike for studying in her previous life. From there she tries her best, but she has no gold fingers to help her (her memory of the future contains only very select events that are mentioned and used by her).

I wished she had more time with the ML on screen, but I also felt that the progression of her feelings was real and believable. She was not someone super smart, but she was not dumb. She knows that her feelings fueled many of her bad choices that culminated in her bad ending in her previous life and she struggles with them, so her trying not to admit something that we as readers can see it is there due to some hints.... it's perfectly normal.

I really wanted it to last a while longer so the side plots and characters could be better worked out... and a bit more fluff (but I guess this author wants to throw more and more angst at us... grr).

Spoiler

And her parents annoyed me quite a bit. Sometimes they just go and turn blind to some events due to trusting too much on people close to them, and her mother is a bit... well, sheltered? She just passively accepts many things. Maybe its just how she was raised and just a common thing those days.

[collapse]

Overall, this is a must read. And oh, I recommend people to find the raws, because I saw that the chapters the translator was putting out were incomplete (most of the websites also had incomplete chapters, and it took a bit of searching to find the complete ones... and they were 5x~9x bigger than what was translated. (So if you are finding some facts confusing in the translation because they are mentioned but you don't remember them happening... that's most likely the reason). <<less

TLDR It's not horrible 3 stars

Details: This one was good fun in the opening and the translation was exceptionally readable.

The downside, bad characters, bad plot, somewhat annoying writing style

  1. The ages of characters are impossible to tell and just leave your head shaking. The MC reincarnates to the age of 5 or 6 and you will keep wondering she's doing what? Plus the level of scheming of her friends would put 40 yr old cougars to shame
  2. The conflicts are ridiculous. The MC and family are continuously having grenades thrown at them and they just take it
  3. The mother in law is psychotically over the top. She does things that will just get her killed.
  4. The ML falls for MC because she's not like other girls🤦‍♂️
Bottom line if you can turn off your brain... more>> you can go the distance with this novel <<less

This story isn't anything new, yet that's not its problem.

I have a few complaints about this one and, some, may coincide with other reviewers' opinions, but some may not.

First, the writing style is poor. It is readable? Yes, but only to a certain point, since the chapters are most of the time just fillers, filled with redundant dialogues that keep going around in circles and are even a little too much for the usual Chinese rhetoric, it's just written like this so the author can fullfill a certain amount of... more>> words and get more money and the chapters and story extended.
Also, about the writing style, it is so unballanced that, after spending too much time with nonsense, the story folds too fast and in an anti-climatic way. There's the issue of how the author lacks skills to develop her plot-lines properly or in a manner that doesn't bore the reader.

Although many people compare this to Chongfei Manual and is, indeed, an attempt to replicate its premise and narrative (the girl that meets the ML early in her rebirth timeline and how she affects his destiny), the story has many weak back-built characters and, sometimes, the actions of those (including the Main Character) are s*upid according to what the author has set for their personality and behavior.

On comparision with Chongfei Manual (the pe*ophile problem) :

Spoiler

We are constantly reading stories where very young girls (even pre-teen sometimes) "capture" the hearts of already grown man or late teens. It is the reality of the ancient times that it was acceptable behavior as well as there is some truth the kids developed earlier because circumstances forced them too (and that's why the "teen age" has keep extending lately, with social & welfare advancements), but there was still some questionable predator instinct (from men's part) in that. From men on their 20's marrying 13 to 17 year old girls, to Emperors and noblemen adding teens into their backyards even when they reacher or surpassed their 60's.

Chongfei Manual already present a questionable relationship with the main couple, because despite the age gap can still be acceptable for an adult couple, they meet when she is a little child and he's almost a teenager. But, at least, the author of that novel bothered to build an understanding enough (acceptable or not) reason on why they would become entangled so early, why a pre-teen would get attatched to a little girl, and she even was cautious enough to not include attraction and love feelings until the girl was a (back then) reasonable age to start attracting bees and buterflies.

This doesn't happen in this novel. The main lead's reason to set his eyes on the little girl is shallow and creepy, and he does set romantically his eyes on a 5 or 6 year old child. In addition to that, the bad writing includes inconsistencies like not remembering the ages she set for both leads. At first he is supposed to be 11 or 12 when he meets 5 year old female lead, then on the second half of the novel, he suddenly is 9 years older than her?

And this is not the only one. In comparision to Chongfei Manual, the inconsistencies extend to the side characters as well and those side characters haven't much interesting points, because they're usually too plain. The villains may not be initially too extreme with their bad actions, but they are just too simple and bad written, stereotyped c*ckroaches that are there so the female lead can get through the different staple tropes of the genre.

Another comparision is how creepy this ML is as opposed to Chongfei Manual's. The author tries to tell us he is actually gentle and a good man, but she unconsciously writes many red flag worthy traits for him that are beyond the black-bellied/tsundere/cold-hearted/usually possessive ML. He comes out as high abuser material, pushy and even a little yandere. Not even the sad enviroment he grew into helps to make all those traits acceptable.

[collapse]

s*upidity of the plot and some character choices:

Spoiler

The premise of the story is interesting, but most of the times the author just developes each scene poorly. We are supposed to have a smart female lead that also has a fair knowledge of pharmacology and medicine yet, towards the last arch, when she start feeling lethargic and has symptoms of a pregnant woman but confirms she isn't pregnant, instead of immediatelly look for signs of poisoning, she just keeps procastinating and telling her close-knit maids that is OK and that she only needs to rest and she'll eventually see what's happen. It really made me wanna beat the female lead hard. Not to mention it was a sloppy "damisel in distress" plot to create anxiety towards the end, there's more before the story wraps on this matter, which made it absolutely boring and anti-climatic.

The Old Madam Shen was another s*upid thing for the female lead. The author wanted us to see her as a grey character but, honestly, I couldn't get to like or pity her at all. And the female lead, as written, despite feeling initially indebted for her previous life, should had drawn a line at some point and even start questioning whether her grandmother's care in the previous life was out of interest and a little guilt (towards her eldest son), just to ensure she could climb a little higher once she married her. It shouldn't be forgetful the fact FL had a secure engagement with a promising family, and that's most likely the only reason why her grandmother protected her. But even the author forgot to mention this in the narrator's lines.

It is s*upid because the FL is written as someone who, after rebirth, is able to figure out many things she couldn't in the past life, after getting back to the Capital and seeing how Old Madam kept drifting to the second branch and mistreating her mother, she should had stopped trying to curry favor with her and made different plans.

The Old Madam was so hard to like, she never assumed her responsability on her crooked 2nd son, she was only sorry that the son she worked so hard to cushion and protect ended up disappointing her. No reflecting on the fact she contributed big time in his poor moral behavior, especially when filling his backyard with women while being so harsh on his eldest daughter-in-law. She also failed to see the key of the success of the first branch was the fact they were a loving family thanks to her eldest son's committmen to his wife and his children. Failing to make her a true grey character with her good and bad aspects.

Finally, all the female villains were just too stereotyped, none ever supposed a real threat to the FL, which would've been fine, making it rather a satisfying read, if it weren't for the fact all their plot-lines were too long and boring.

Seems like the translation has been dropped, so I read the raws instead.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. There were parts I really enjoyed and couldn't wait to read, however there were also parts (especially towards the end) that I just found repetitive and boring.

Things I liked:

  • MC's friendships with other female characters - I really enjoyed how she was able to make friends, both in the countryside and in the capital. Not only were they all supportive of each other, the other female characters had personalities and their own troubles too!
  • MC's relationship with her family - finally, a decent family. While I don't particularly like her mother (she's a bit too passive and weak for my taste), I do appreciate an MC having actual parents! Parents that love her, trust her and want the best for her. I also appreciated her relationship with the grandmother - while the grandmother is a very petty person, I feel like this is very realistic. Our MC didn't grow up beside her grandmother, it's natural that grandma would favour her cousins more. The grandma eventually develops a relationship with the MC and does want the best for her.
  • MC's character wasn't entirely revenge driven - although some parts were really those of a typical rebirth novel (where the MC has to avoid all these devious schemes), I liked how the MC wanted to enjoy her life and her time with her family.
What I didn't like:

  • Some reviewers have brought this up, but the scheming of actual children is slightly weird. I just like to pretend that she's not 8 or 10, but instead slightly older.
  • Didn't really like the ML - ML had no personality other than being doting towards MC. Very bland and boring.
  • Relationship development was also meh. ML pursued, MC resisted for a couple of chapters, and then they were lovey-dovey 100% of the time. No conflict, no tension = loss of interest.
  • Ending felt very rushed. I think the author just wanted to finish it quickly so what could have been another 10-20 chapters was crammed all into the last one.
  • Spoiler

The plot regarding ML's family is also.... annoying. They spent way too long on it and I get the stepmother was the "big bad" but it all could have been solved very quickly. The ML could have literally gone to the Emperor and said he wanted to leave this family and voila. This was ultimately the solution in the end, but I swear they didn't need to wait that long.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

I also didn't enjoy the plot of the MC being poisoned. Gasp. I guess I was not invested in this MC enough and I knew she obviously wasn't going to die. Again, the ending was very rushed. MC falls into a coma, only has 3 days to live, ML rushes off, it's the third day and he's still not back - end scene. I think the author tried to make it all dramatic, but I wasn't feeling it. The epilogue of them living happily with their kids also didn't do much for me.

Actually I like the story, but I'm tired to read many unnecessary and wishy-washy conversations that has been repeated over and over again in one frame, such as conversations when some characters denied things or to convince something, or FL's maids chatting with each other and etc.

It was a good read. It's very similar to "Chongfei Manuel" and "Rebirth of empress of military lineage", you can say that it's a mix of the two. What I like the most is that with her rebirth she also changed the fate of many poeple for the best.

For the rating I deduced one star because the ending was too ruched and many things were left insolved. I think it's a pity !! If the author added some side stories he/she could have solved everything.

Overall it's a good read. Not... more>> the best but still good !! <<less

I am someone who generally likes rebirth stories so I wasn't deterred that it was the same old plot again. However, I had to drop this novel for a number of reasons. The main reason was the age of the MC, making her older than 5 wouldn't have made any difference to the plot (13 -14 would be okay, since the author wouldn't want her to be of marriageable age yet). Not to mention I had just started reading a novel "rebirth of Han Yuxi" which I also dropped for... more>> the same reason. To be fair, at least you could still see some semblance of childishness in this one as opposed to rebirth of han yuxi where 4 year Olds were having and orchestrating schemes that would put imperial concubines to shame. Not to mention starting the novel with the MC so young is just a way to lay ground for unnecessary filler. Because nothing interesting can really happen at this age tbh.

Secondly the pedophilia representation. Why would anyone find a 5 year old attractive? Also in a weird way the MC could also fall into that box. Because if I went from a twenty year old to a 5 year old, there is no way I could actually find a 15 year old attractive much less a 10 year old. What exactly about them would be appealing to you? This is one reason why I couldn't get Into malicious empress, because the MC of that novel was a 30 plus old woman with grown & married children before her rebirth to her childhood. So supposedly falling in love with someone younger that her children is wild to me especially since the author makes sure to remind you. I personally find that rebirth stories are done better and feel more real when they go back 2 - 5 years. Because the villains are already evil and things have been set it motion. Which makes the MCs emotions more valid. That is a disadvantage here because why is the MC beefing with 5 - 8 years Olds? We know they are the eventual villains of your story but atp it's just bullying. The author then tries to compensate this by making the children terrible? Please what are these author's smoking? While reading this I just kept hoping for a time skip but alas it didn't happen.

Lastly the writing style was not engaging at all, I found myself skipping large block of texts and even situations that were supposed to be entertaining fell flat and were boring. I eventually had to drop it because I just wasn't interested in any of the characters. <<less

Fell a bit flat for me. The introduction for the FL was too poor. We weren’t really given a chance to care about her before we were ultimately thrown into the past to watch the drama in her family (who I had even less reason to care about).

Anyway, since I didn’t get too far, I won’t be rating it for now. It’ll have to wait until I get a second chance to reread and confirm my impression.

It's actually pretty interesting. If you're fed up with high-level scheming and wanted to take a breather, this novel is the top of my recommendation.

MC's a novice in scheming since her past life was simple and naive so it made sense that her ways were somewhat childish and funnily petty but I enjoyed it. Sometimes I just want to read simple ancient novels that didn't force me to keep up and think along with the MC.

The plus points for me are definitely the people on MC's side. The parents are... more>> my OTP, the maids are MC's best companions (and spies XD). MC's real friends are tight-knit. ML is okay, just your standard doting and protective hubby.

But what made this couple different from others is that they have this unbreakable trust in each other. They knew the personality essence of their other half and never have any misunderstanding, which saved a lot of time spent on household drama.

Actually, what made me finally succumb to rate this novel quite highly is the reason why MC accepted ML's proposal. They did it quite uniquely, too.

Spoiler

You see, they met in a pavillion when ML decided to pop up THE question. MC was doubtful and wanted to reject him, but then ML asked MC to play the qin-xiao ensemble with him. In ancient China, I think both music and calligraphy were used to reveal someone's true self. Sooo yes, I'd surrender too if someone proposed to me like that 🤧 I've always had a soft spot for expressing your true intention with songs ever since I saw Mir's true ending (Ar Tonelico 2 game). It's just... The author did it so uniquely and beautifully, I couldn't help but believe that this ML has helplessly fell in love with MC despite their gap in age and status, and he helped MC realized that she could give him one last chance of trying to love someone again after what happened in her past life. It was just so *chef's kiss* beautiful.

[collapse]

I think that the author's only mistake was regressing her age too far. MC's thinking and speech pattern looked more like 10 - 12 years old to me. But it's quite forgettable since the author barely mentioned her current age and just preferred to call her 'this child' in other people's POV.

Also, I don't know much about how female friendship goes on during ancient times but I'm already annoyed by how long MC has to continue the charade of being 'besties' with this one persistent dog skin plaster Qi Xueyan. I meant, MC's status is higher and they already close to breaking their ties but they still continue to be friends? WTF. <<less

I didn't have much hope for this novel. Scheme were pretty shallow, concluded with some convenient tools.

The biggest problem for me is the age of MC, starting as 5 y.o., she held grudge from previous life against a 5 and 8 y. O. Sibling. Of course the sibling is depicted as selfish, jealous person, but they are kids after all. Oh, and by the time she is 10 (or so I thought, the age is not really consistent after all), a prince most certainly fall in love with her and... more>> help her scheme. <<less

i had high hopes for this novel despite what others were saying. Yes its a repetitive rebirth story but I've always liked these kind. Anyways I stopped reading because I cant stand how they are 5 years old for almost half of the novel like how does this even work? Idk if the author is on the wrong pill but she could have at least maybe made them 10/11 years old?

I am enjoying it so far. It is moving a little slowly, but considering how much is happening and how things are moving, it is well paced. So maybe it feels slow because I want the face slapping to really happen.

I like how despite her thirst for vengeance, she is playing it smart and slow and really thinking about things.

I adore her parents. They are just freaking adorable.

No issues with the translation or editing so far.

I agree that the nov misquote similar to rebirth of empress of military lineage and princess we yang and some other rebirth novels, but once you get over that; it's actually a nice read. Would also have preferred if the ages are a little more mature, even though it's common knowledge that old Chinese culture encourage early marriage at 15, 5 years is still pretty young for all the scheming. 10 years would have been better.
