The novel was good, but it could have been much better. It had great potential, especially with the world building - concepts, techniques, treasures, alchemy, refining, inscriptions and many more, however 90% of that got forgotten midway in the novel. Quality also deteriorated near the end, because it seemed author started to rush it but it was bearable as the ending was rounded up quite nicely considering how bad it can get in xianxia and xuanhuan.

Main character was good, he did start getting one-dimensional near the end, but it was... more>> still okay. In the evil world he was in he could be considered a hero. He didn't kill or a single innocent person, all the people he killed were evil scum, he was there to save the oppressed in several situations, however his main ideal was pursuing the martial arts, everything else was secondary, that was especially so in the end that he forgot about taking vengeance, taking care of his family, enforcing justice on the oppressors...

The best thing I liked about this novel was the world development and cultivation - it was extremely diverse and complex. I didn't read IET's novels, but I heard that he had unreasonable sizes which also appears here in Martial World. Beside that, the concepts of alchemy, inscription and refining were also very amazing but they were sadly pushed away and only remembered on random times when it was convenient for the plot. It also had a very unique way of cultivation and other parts that accompanied it (will, laws, body, soul...) which I found very interesting.

As for the romance and the girls, well... it was at least relatively decent. While the author didn't portray it very good, it was still passable for the genre this novel has. As for the girls, they were had different personalities and their development with MC was interesting (especially so for the 3rd and 4th wife), sadly, however their uniqueness slowly started to disappear after they were "conquered" by the protagonist. I also didn't like how he neglected his children so much. I mean he had 4 of them, but we only got to see 2 of them on screen doing something and even that was minimal...

Overall, it entertained me for most of the story so I could neglect most of the bad parts which other xianxia and xuanhuan posses so i'll give it 4 stars. <<less

SHORT REVIEW:

Good story but JUST GET TO THE POINT! AAAHH!

... more>> LONG REVIEW:

This story should be a 4~4.5... but the author loves to slow the story to a crawl to go into excruciatingly painful detail about EVERYTHING. It wouldn't be so bad if it was once or twice, but it's virtually every chapter. Do you care where that guy's sword was made? Or about the life story of that random character who's only going to be on page for a fraction of a chapter, and will never be mentioned again? Or seeing everyone's reaction and thoughts, one by one, in painstaking detail, even though it's obvious already? No? Tough luck! Get ready to read it anyway.

At first I thought the author was just bad at building up the drama, but now I'm 90% sure that he purposely pads the story with words to lengthen his chapters. There are moments where something could be wrapped up in a sentence but gets dragged out for half a chapter. For example, there are a couple of scenes where the people mock the MC and he could just act and show them up, but instead the author spends (literally) a dozen or more paragraphs repeating the obvious or what's already been said before, or giving details that don't add anything to the story. If the bad guy's about to use a technique then expect to learn everything about it.

I've read another of the author's works, True Martial World, which he wrote after this one and it's miles better (it's great, you should read it!). It still has wordiness/dragging-out-scenes-for-far-too-long issues but they're nowhere near as frustrating and you can tell that he's taken people's advice and improved a lot.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic. My point is that it's a great story but you will only be able to enjoy it if you have a lot of patience and can read chapter after chapter of unimportant information for the good parts of the story. For me, it's too much, and while I wouldn't go so far as to give this 1 star like some other reviewers, I think 3~3.5 stars is a fair rating (a 4~4.5 story but a 3~3.5 experience, giving how much skimming and yelling "JUST GET TO THE POINT! AAAHH!" you'll be doing). <<less

It is a great story, not because the character, but because the plot, setting, and cultivation system.
Spoiler

Pros
*No reincarnation, just a hardworking MC
*Plot is great and is just a little redundant (which is amazing for novels nowadays)
*cultivation system is new and fresh
*World building is great and so are the mc's powers

Cons
*Characterizations are weak. Not as bad as in MGA and slight better than in BTTH. Still weak though you can't really get attached to the chars all that much.
*MC find heavenly item and becomes TOO OP in certain areas (such as secondary jobs) It does not affect combat all that much though.
*Retainabiliy: It simply cannot retain other characters throughout the whole novel which is kinda sad.

Conclusion:
I recommend it. Although it is not a heavenly quality novel like those written by IET and Er Gen (may he be long lived) it is just below them. It is of both excellent and enjoyable.

[collapse]

Don't be fooled. While I find the story excellent, the only reasons this novel is currently rank #1 is because of the amazing translation speed and quality. <<less

I actually read this story because of TMW because they occur in the same universe. In this universe, there are 3 items relating to 3 things, soul, body and energy (Qi or something). In TMW, the MC has the purple crystal, which is one the items relating to control of energy (Qi). In MW, the MC has a cube which is another of the 3 items which is related to soul and the item relating to body has been mentioned but it was taken by the others (alien race).

Actually I... more>> didn't like MW much till about 100 or 150 chapters but after that it was very good and interesting. <<less

The MC is an incredibly boring Gary Stu, the characters and plot have no depth, and the writing has the most dreadful amount of word count fillers I've ever seen from Xianxia novels. Although this novel contains mature themes, it's actually closer to shounen based on how naive, childish, and even robotic the characters sound. The world-building is pretty generic, and there is nothing special about its cultivation system as well. If I had to go into details, I could go on and on for 10 pages minimum. Nonetheless, I... more>> won't waste my time doing so because you can clearly tell the author didn't spend much effort writing this novel. This novel at most has some cheap and subpar wish-fulfillment. Compared to that, the amount of suffering your brain cells will have to go through just isn't worth it. If you think it's bad, don't be like me and keep reading because of sunk cost fallacy or you expect the writing will get better because of how popular it is. <<less

I really wanted to like Martial World, and I'm surprising myself to be ranking it lower than True Martial World, but here we are. I'm abandoning this series after a few too many boring battle and training arcs that fail to stand out. I just can't do over 2000 chapters of this.

I could see this as a decent introduction to those who are new to the genre, except maybe for the constant proofreading errors, past-present tense changes, translation inconsistencies, etc., especially in the early chapters. It's an earnest cultivator novel... more>> about training, battling, and ranking highly in various trials. For readers who aren't already well familiar with basic xianxia concepts like cultivation and martial intent, talent and bottlenecks, internal demons and tribulations, this is the kind of novel that attempts to introduce these things in its own words instead of just taking for granted that they're supposed to be there. That's nice to have. But for someone who has read a lot of these already, the word I keep coming back to is "plain". It never quite got its hooks into me.

Occasionally the hero Lin Ming does something I wouldn't expect, or there's a pretty cool worldbuilding gimmick. It wasn't compelling enough to make me stick through the rest, but I do want to give credit where it's due.

I'm willing to admit that TMW might not actually deserve a better score, but I read it many years earlier and at the time I did feel like TMW's Yi Yun exploited his way to the top more often through cheat skills and other fortuitous shortcuts that I thought were generally more engaging early on. I don't really want an "earnest" martial artist's journey so much as a good-hearted thieves' one. MW still has a taste of that rogue heart in it -- Lin Ming pins mu*ders on other people, steals treasures from powerful beasts and so on when the option has fallen right into his lap, but he's more interested in doing things the mindless and 'proper' way. If you enjoy a protagonist getting dozens of beautiful superficially-formidable women to fall in love with him, there's that too. But in my opinion, there's just not enough of a creative edge to justify worth reading through 50+ chapter arcs of tournament battles or repetitive trial floor climbing.

With the author Cocooned Cow, you can expect a novel that avoids the worst sorts of plot holes but is never brilliantly-planned either, occasionally awkward sexist double-standards that are more eye-rolling than offensive, no unbearably bad philosophical notions, somewhat safe picks to read but ultimately kind of revealing of the author's childishness. Lin Ming doesn't usually solve problems so much as rely on Protagonist Luck to compensate for his stubbornness. He's also pretty bad about falling to the level of grade-schooler diss contests with throwaway villain characters. I know Yi Yun was like this too, but while it was still cringe when he did it, it was perhaps less at odds with his other supposed character traits. How is Lin Ming supposed to have the heart to pursue martial arts so single-mindedly and yet also keep getting goaded into all this baby stuff?

The author dooms every arc to play out the same way because he can't let LM suffer indignity for even one day, even when he's crippled and teleported to a foreign land, which is an utterly wasted opportunity. And every time someone forms a death grudge with Lin Ming, I want to yell "How are you this fragile! Go to therapy!" The fear of cultivators creating potentially irreconcilable internal demons within their hearts if they suffer the slightest shame is too excessive. It's clearly just an excuse to goad characters into s*upid fights and drive the story forward, but this idea of never being outshone in any area by a junior else risking the destruction of one's 'heart of martial arts' is a very weak concept of strength -- brittle and immature. You're supposed to grow from your losses, not grow by never losing, but even that obvious truism is too sophisticated of an insight for this author.

I really can't overstate how messy the writing can be, either. Some is definitely the fault of the translators and some is from the author himself. If you took a shot every time a battle described floor tiles getting destroyed, you would die. Numbers mean nothing and the same distances can become ten times longer or shorter the next time they come up. Regular human characters are 8-10 feet tall because the translation changes 'chi' into 'feet' without converting the measurements.

I would be able to brush off some of the more superficial faults if the story worked for me otherwise, but I can't say that it does. If this was a novel you loved reading years ago and you've read several others since, you might find that it's not as good as you remember.

But in seeking the perfect introductory xianxia story to recommend to new readers instead of this, it would be tough to say. Maybe people don't need their introduction to the genre to be perfect. After all, the bar is much lower. (I still like Against the Gods, though.) <<less

I have read 340 chapters so far and out of that, there has only been 200 chapters worth of material. The reason is the Author is a hack and he pads out all his chapters by restating things from previous chapters but I'm not talking about 3 to 4 sentences no no no. I'm talking 5 to 6 paragraphs repeated each chapter that were repeated the chapter before and the chapter before that, and the chapter before that. Anytime the writer has a battle or a mini arc something that... more>> lasts 10 chapters the best way to read is to skim since he will just spend the next 10 chapters repeating crap that happened in the previous chapter and then he will repeat information about recent events in the larger arc and then he will repeat in each chapter on how the MC is god. This whole repeating, pads out the chapters by a third. The only time the story is good is when fights last 1 chapter or when there's world build, everything else is a circle jerk. The reader DOES NOT NEED TO BE TOLD EACH CHAPTER THAT THE MC IS OP BECAUSE OF A MACGUFFIN. No one starts reading a story in the middle shut up and stop padding.

Then there is the MC not joking were at 340 the MC has never lost a fight. He has ran but only to regroup and then win but he has NEVER LOST A FIGHT. This is the worst kind of stakes since even when he runs "and barley makes it out" it's a few scrapes and bruises at worst. I'm not going to name other books but there are many series where the the OP MC does run into a wall and Actually nearly dies. The MC in this story only gets a slap on the wrist at worst. The way the writer "counters" this is by having the MC claim he can't win only for 2 seconds latter to him winning the fight anyway. Or showing that he can do a feat that makes the the issue in question void. <<less

Negatives:
Every character that is pretty cool when he/she is introduced will just be responsible for screaming "Lin Ming" after becoming Lin Mings friend/wife.
Volumes 24/25 were just bad (2/5).
Volume 26 is 1/5...

Positives:
There is usually some drama and/or some major goal in sight.
Volume 1-12 are actually really good (4/5).
Volume 13-23 are still a pretty good read (3.5/5)

Conclusion:
I would still recommend this novel but when you think that its getting boring you should just drop it because it will only get worse.

This novel started out really good. But somehow lost the plot after a few hundred chapters. A few examples:

1. The author will say the MC did something that no other has done in billions of years, only to say someone has done the same a few days later.

2. He said the reward the MC got is something that no one has got in billions of years. MC went to some place and found the same reward (jade slip) in a pile of junk sold in some random place.

3. And there... more>> is the confusing cultivation method. MC kept changing his cultivation method without any side effects. Like going to slaughter road cultivation. Then he just dumped the method and changed to sonething else entirely but his level is still the same.

4. Trancendent divine might is something empyrean only got. He got a few from magic cube. Then late in the novel the author said the souls left in the cube are just holy lords.

5. Dumb dumb enemies. So dumb is unbelievable.

6. Asura Road. They said the cultivation will depend on god runes. But after awhile its basically the same with divine realm, god runes was not used at all. Author said going into Asura road is difficult and not everyone can leave it without fulfilling the requirements. Boom some saint dumb half empyrean said he comes and goes as he pleases to Asura road. Seems like MC enemies can travel freely to Asura Road but not the MC.

Conclusion: The consistencies in plots are so unbelievably chaotic. But if you just looking for entertainment its ok I guess. <<less

After coming to this point in the novel we get a beautiful trancedence where the authors many annoying epetitive description of the MC's past and many more irrevalent description are replaced by the MC's trancedence story.

In the beginning the first arc was stretched to beyond necessary chapters required for it as the author added many irrevalent worldly views and description due to which the story development almost came to a standstill at some point.

But as the next arcs continued on such matters were replaced by an amazing story line and... more>> the events and competition s procedure became less repetitive and more productive

And as we proceed onwards to 1700 and beyond the trancedence of the story reaches the peak and more ephermal in its own might.

Although the MC's the first two and his sister is forgotten for a long time due and sometimes there is a casual description of them.

So overall the novel is worth a read and there might be some boring points and tedious parts but just where do we do not encounter them <<less

So I recently finished this novel and overall it was a decent novel and I enjoyed reading. Anyway here's what I don't like.

  1. The conclusion was super vague and just bad. Hated it
2. I think the novel took to long to get off of Lin Ming's home planet. Once you get to the middle it gets pretty good, But it takes awhile.

3. Romance is meh.

... more>> 4. The ending few chapters felt like it was trying to stuff 500 chapters into 2 weeks worth of writing.

5. So much non-canon shit, feels like the author got side tracked while writing and just left it in. Also sometimes it just give the history on something when you don't need it. But really sometimes half of the chapter will be totally useless and will not push the story forward at all. Also the fights, the author includes the audience reacting to Lin Ming doing anything and that will take at least 10-12 paragraphs for everything he does.

6. Tedious to read. This relates to the off topic stuff but you really can just read the ending few words of a paragraph and get the main idea and then keep power scrolling down the page and keep doing it. <<less

Honestly I read a good bit of the novel. I really enjoyed it until I reached like about chapter 600. I just got absolutely bored of the novel, and just gave up. It started getting really repetitive, and didn't like the MC all that much later on. Might be a little bias, because I prefer one love interest stories compared to harems. However, some of these love interests seemed boring, seemed just like plot points that were nothing later on, and didn't seem like the MC really liked them. The... more>> MC had a number of moments where he just caused trouble pointlessly, or he got into trouble because someone had the common sense of a 5 year old. The MC killed some people simply because he could or because they might cause trouble later which is incredibly unlikely considering their sh*t for talent. Anyways I didn't like it, but it is not that bad; just very against my personal tastes. <<less

I'll make it short. This novel starts out really interesting but then gets repetitive. Cliche antagonists that call in helpers that call in helpers that all eventually die in the hands of the MC because plot. Unlimited amount of treasure that the MC just gets because plot. Characters talking about the same stuff over and over and over again because the writer had to increase the amount of chapters somehow. Also the MC might say something at the beginning of the novel but then completely abandons that a few hundred... more>> chapters later now some people say that that is called change but i'd rather call it the forgetfulness of the writer. But still this novel was somewhat interesting in the beginning. <<less

At fist I was a little disappointed as the plot gave the MC a way too sudden power up. Shortly after this his abilities started covering almost all possible supporting skills, like alchemy and inscription. To make maters worse the strongest and most beautiful girl in the entire kingdom also developed an interest in him. This is the general recipe of a crappy novel. But, this didn't continue forever. The plot took a sudden turn towards the alley of success from the alley of despair. Instead of over relying on... more>> the first part of the story, beside the first woman who developed an interest in the MC, everyone else was scrapped. It is a risky move as some people may appreciate some of the side characters. Thankfully, this was not a bad choice at all. The story picks up the pace, introduces a new woman which is way more interesting as a character, the villains become stronger and more ruthless, the MC powers up but he faces a bigger danger each time and the foreshadowing is done extremely well. In conclusion, this story evolves, and it does it at a pace that can make everyone happy. At last, I will divide the pros and cons

Pros:
+ A MC that can't always pull a rabbit out of his hat (or cube)
+ Love interests that are developed in the order of importance not in the order of meting
+ Well done battles, interesting power ups
+ A very interesting world build, well detailed and with many nuances
+ Villains that have both the brains and the power
+ Interesting cultivation realms
Cons:
- The translation is a little messy from time to time
- It is quite easy to lose yourself in the sea of details
- A very common beginning that resembles most xianxia novels

A small edit after finishing this story.

This novel manages to cover almost every weak point that a xianxia has in general. The rules and the reasoning behind these rules that govern both the cause and effect have been polished and perfect to a degree where the reader stops reading the story as a simple addiction to the action but as a clean work of literature with the intention of leaving a message. Surprisingly the ending was rushed, which I sadly couldn't understand why. Everything until the last fight was done in a very detailed and careful manner yet the ending was done either to surprise or to highlight the importance of accumulations (talent and fate). As for this, it leaves a slightly sour aftertaste, but on the better side, the protagonist is not considered the master of existence just because he touched upon the top but rather as a pioneer of the never seen before scenery of the peak of martial arts. Like this, the story ended, but it truly felt complete. Kudos to the translator for finish this heavy task of translating over 2200 chapters and to the writer that didn't indulge in the same troupe used by most writers. <<less

At first I was reluctant to read this pequel to TMW because I really like the MC in TMW and seeing the comments comparing YiYun to LinMeng, I didn't like it. So I was biased towards TMW. However, TMW has reached its peak and needs to grow because it's getting boring so I dropped the novel and looking for something to occupy my time I read this novel. It pleasantly surprised me!? LinMeng is a nice and loyal guy, straightforward and decisive when need be. Plus none of that too... more>> much u defeat my underling I kill u and so on shit. I mean there's comparatively less than other novels of the same or similar genre. The girls aren't just Willy nilly and OP they are real, they have feelings like a normal person. And also even though his cultivation is slow but that's good because there'll be more amazing arcs or plots and also his foundation is very steady and unshakeable. He isn't too clouded by hate and arrogance of his talent. He isn't ruthlessly arrogant like other MCs that I liked but became idiots. I binged on this for 2 days and can't wait for more chapters to amaze me. I really like this novel and will definitely place it in my ranking list in the top 10. Kudos to the awesome translator and his or her speed and also many thanks to the author for this amazing story!!???? 10/10 review for this! <<less

Its should enjoyable and intersting and hook the reader to next chapter and make people crave for more. Martial World fills that criteria very much.

MC wins fight against stronger enemies hundreds of times -> his friends reaction after MC yet again challenges someone stronger

ret*rd 1 - MC this is extremely reckless, VillainNr38 is a renown genius from RandomClan92, you simply cannot afford to fight him at your current level!!!11!

ret*rd 2 - Haa.. This Lin Ming is simply courting death, in a couple more thousand years he would be strong enough to fight this guy and yet he goes willing to his death!!!!

No matter how hard MC smashes people other ret*rds that were barely stronger... more>> than those he smashed come and comment on how MC is 'newborn calf that doesn't fear the tiger". How are these people old monsters that lived for hundreds/ thousand of years? Other reason why this novel f*cking sucks is the constant retcons. MC finds how hard a certain cultivation rank is to obtain, how you need enlightenment and all kinds of sh*t that is 'ImPosSiBle' to get, and yet when he gets there all he has to do is swallow a bone and whoopie he broke through.. First of all I'd like to say BEST NOVEL EVER.

Before reading Martial World I was getting sick of the repetitive plotlines of these chinese novels. Everything was MC getting humiliated and being cheated or cliches revenges. Until I read MW and I saw what a awesome novel is like.

Since the beginning I was captivated for the story. I'd say that MW is the best web novel ever written in my opinion.

This is one of those Xianxia novels where there are a bunch of cliches/tropes and repeated tournament arcs but it does everything well enough to hold your attention and actually, it was way better in the later arcs than the beginning which is surprising for these types of novels.

Its kinda like My Hero Academia which takes the staple shounen tropes and does them to perfection.

Actually, nah, its more like an pretty good isekai where you know what's going to happen, but you read it anyway because its isekai and it... more>> did a good enough job.

Here, its Xianxia, so you know there's going to be a harem, you know MC is going to enter those 'dangerous zones where anyone who enters it will die', you know MC will be separated from his harem and come back just in time to save them from getting r*ped/forced marriage by an older stronger dude, you know there's gonna be a bunch of tournaments and that MC is going to win them all, you know MC is going to get chased by older stronger people but still live and come back, you know MC is gonna find some rare million yr old herbs, and you can bet your sorry ass that MC is going to have some OP techniques and fight above his level.

This novel does not do anything special, it just follows the standard tropes set in Xianxia and ended up being a pretty enjoyable read. <<less
