The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

I can only say one thing, please read this novel, it isn't a disappointment. Don't believe those that gives this a 2-3 star review. If you have read tr*sh of the Count's Family and Overgeared, you're definitely going to like this novel.

First of all, the translation is 9.8/10. All grammars are correct and no inconsistencies can be find like those from other Chinese novels that sound out of touch. There might be a few misspelled words but you honestly won't even remember, because even I don't.

Now for the story without... more>> any obvious spoilers. The main character is definitely flawed, like an actual human being, and that's the biggest thing that makes this novel good, not the op one-hit protagonists from other stories. The MC is weak initially and actually makes an effort to change this without being given a magical power-up, a stumble to an OP weapon, or whatnot. Relationships of the MC are realistic and endearing. You actually feel their emotion when reading. This novel shows the flaws of the MC without blatantly telling the readers what it is.

For those that are wondering, yes, this may actually be a harem novel, since there are many possible harem members, but the story so far isn't about romance.

So far the criteria I have when reading a novel is, how long can I read it at bed lying down, and from my experience, I've read this from 12 midnight to 4pm at the very start, so yes, you can have high expectations for this novel.

Don't believe those that have read about 30 chapters of this novel, dropped it, then tell how the story goes nowhere. You can't expect something that would pass Lord of the Rings from a Korean webnovel. <<less

I will make this review short:

I REALLY LIKE THIS NOVEL. I LOVE IT VERY MUCH.

... more>> Best of the best fantasy "isekai"* (another world) novel that I have ever read.

I love the world building, the mix of MC's real world (Earth) and the other world (Paradise), and especially the character growth of this novel. It was started like a game element story but now we getting into so much more than ordinary Fantasy that I could imagined.

A well written story with a Great MC. BESSTTTT ♡

*) this is a Korean novel, not like the usual Japanese isekai <<less

I can't understand why people would rate this at 1 star at all. It's nowhere near as bad as some of the other novels out there. Sure there is some plot armor and the use of a stereotypical character type, but then again, are there really any books out there that don't use such things at some level?

The story flows well and there is a decent amount of character development, the combination of which is enough to keep the reader entertained. The author does a good job of adding new... more>> elements when the story starts to slow. Since the story isn't particularly long (something that I actually like about Korean novels), I'm hoping that the plot remains engaging and eventually provides the readers who stick around with a satisfying ending.

The translator is amazing and has obviously put a lot of effort into translating the work into English. If anything, I can vouch that at least the level of the language is not something that will ever put off any reader. <<less

A story about a guy who gained second chance by reverting 10 years time while retaining subconscious of what have happened. That means he only recalled stuff by instinct and deja vu. He basically gains a game system and participates in an alter-dimension war alongside with WoW's alliance-like coalition against a Zerg-like race.

In comparison to author's previous novel (MEMORIZE), this novel doesn't seem to put as much effort in portraying the dark horror and cruelty. Majority of characters aren't traumatized by the gore (well... most of them are psychopathic anyway),... more>> and there's no effort in writing adult romance at all. So, you can expect many JP comedic skinships and bakas harem.

Anyway, I still think this novel (2017) is much better in style and approach than MEMORIZE (2012). <<less

Great story.. Horrible MC.

At 200, the MC is just a generic Japanese light novel MC. Which is weird because he's Korean.

Basically, MC is a 26yr old virg*n. He gets flustered and runs away any time a woman touches him. He screams and whines whenever a woman tries to kiss him.

... more>> I'm at chapter 200, which is almost halfway through this novel, and there has been zero relationship progression between the MC and any of the women.

His cowardly and easily flustered personality wouldn't be bad if the author made him 14 to 16 years old. But, he's 26. <<less

I honestly don't get the hate in this series. I'm guessing maybe because it's a series that you'll either love or hate or maybe it's a series that will get hate because of how popular it is. Most of the one star review here are just nitpicky and failed to see the good thing in this series. It is better for you to read it yourself without minding the bad/overpraising review and judge it yourself.

At least after diving among the pile of tr*sh KR novels, this one is a good... more>> and enjoyable read.

– The characters felt alive and not just your typical characters with overused characteristic trope. They felt like real people that you could sympathize with because they have their own realistic circumstances.

– His circumstances with his family is pretty realistic. Especially for an asian household.

– The world building is okay, but the world is kinda too small? At least for me.

– Actions/Battles are mediocre at best.

– MC is annoyingly a betafag.

– But what makes me continue reading this is because of the superb character development. It's not your typical weak to strong character that became flat after becoming strong. As he get stronger, his character also continues to develop.

very good novel and if you like the first few chapters I think you will like the whole novel. There's big character development of MC, is realistic and you can sympathize with the characters. Great action, however not entirely focused on action, there's quite a lot of scenes filled with sadness and insecureness so if anyone was searching for the next martial art novel this might not be the one.

Lmao these low reviews that complain the MC is a 'pathetic dumb idiot', of course he's dumb at the start he's some gambling addict that hit rock bottom, if he was a genius mastermind that would be even weirder, go to a betting store and see how many god-like tacticians there are in real life lol. He has lost all confidence in himself but this 'Paradise' gives him something to live for and he tries to repay his debts (both financial and emotional) that way. Here you see some really... more>> good character development quality for a webnovel. People who expect to find an MC or any character in fact, to suddenly become some Alpha after years of degradation in society is totally naive. Recovering your ego and ability to communicate well is not some ON and OFF switch in reality and it takes time. Although the MC is not a good gambler, he is opportunistic and ironically matches the carpe diem idea well. The only fault being he doesn't utilise his 'nine eyes' as well, but the limits to the use are mentioned every now and again I guess.

The stats being categorised with High/Medium/Low etc. I can see to be a bit awkward to read at first, especially if you keep reading all these other Game and Level Up types of novels, but I actually prefer it now. There's no infinite levels (current highest being Level 8 if I remember correctly) so there's no infinite power scaling that inflates all the stats to extend the word count.

The only weird thing is how deaths in 'Paradise' works (minor spoiler), you lose your memories of everything to do with that world. True, I have always wondered how if you forget lose your memories, would you still be you? So theoretically losing your memories is like dying. But it's hard for me as a reader to feel emotional due to someone dying in 'Paradise' if I know they are still alive in the real World, but obviously this is a much bigger deal for MC (read it if you wanna know why). Therefore the main feels and emotional moments come certainly from the rare but powerful interactions with his family on Earth, I don't like describing moments in novels as 'realistic' but the relationships are certainly logical and well depicted by the writer. I can sense some kdrama-esque moments but it's certainly more tame than what I usually read from these translated WNs.

If you are still contemplating reading this webnovel, just try it out, it's a lot better than the other ones you usually see from this genre. The high rating and endless praise from the reviews should show you that it's to most people's taste on this site, I only wrote this review because I got mad at reading the points of critiquing that other reviews have given that I don't agree with lol. On the plus side, translated chapters get updated daily so once you catch up it's not so bad and I haven't broken the bank yet to quench my thirst haha (let's see how long this lasts). <<less

This novel is probably one of the best out there amongst other web novels when it comes to characters progression and growth.

The struggle of the main characters made each chapters meaningful and thrilling, that makes each of his achievements very fulfilling even for the readers.

Even side characters have more personalities than other novels' main characters. They are complex while staying true to their main personality, and that's how it should be with the setting.

My only gripes would be how some settings and locations couldn't be explained with anything other than... more>> "it's fantasy", however that's only a minor thing.

It was probably one of the greatest reads out there that would only come out rarely, but it seems the journey is halted by a translation-reboot. <<less

Edit: BTW, you can affix "cache:" (without quotes) to read the novel on PacificNovels and avoid the tedium of finding the proper chapter for 88, 89, and possibly 90. IE just go to chapter "X" on the website and when you get the site telling you "gee golly willickers, we can't find the page", just add "cache:" before the "https" in the browser. Because asians are kinda xenophobic, greedy, c*nts, in regards to IP.

This novel has a lot going for it (and while I understand where the <4 ratings are... more>> coming from, I'm not sure it's warranted).

To the pretentious... tools: Yes, there are a lot of unrealistic circumstances surrounding the plot. Even the most worthless military pissants know how important stepping up to fill a leadership role is to solve an imminent crisis.

However, the MC has tangible growth, the side characters are actually memorable (VERY rare in amateur eastern stories), and the world development is a solid 7/10 (I'd put it at a 9/10 if things were explained to the reader as they were presented).

It's a very binge-worthy plot. Each chapter is a 24+ minute read (The norm is roughly 10-13 minutes, per my browser add-on), and it's very tantalizing. If a chapter doesn't end on a cliff-hanger, it ends on possible plot progression. There's always a reason to read more and I'd honestly caution anyone looking at this novel to allocate their time properly. I binge read what I presumed was only a couple chapters at 8PM until I saw the sun burning through my window; almost as if saying "Dude, why the hell are you still awake?". Lost 9ish hours in what seemed like a snap of the fingers.

Problem with Novelupdates is that there's no screening for these dumb 13-16 year-old virg*ns that simply can't tolerate anything less than an action scene every 5 chapters. Might I suggest virtually any Chinese martial arts novel? Seems more up you guys' alley. 1% plot, 9% "other", 90% action/"Oh my god, I'm totally going to f*ck the MC into oblivion" harems. Seriously guys... It's not that hard to bed a middleschool/highschool girl (In that age bracket) or otherwise pick up a drunk chick with Daddy issues at a bar - or get into your first fist fight in the 15 years you've been alive, ya f*ckin' pansies. <<less

Great novel, truly worth reading. If you are looking for a game based novel this is the one. Great translation, interesting arcs and with a gore and more mature setting than other novels of this genre such as ROTWRTW or Overgeared.

The only drawback is the current number of translated chapters, will be a problem if you get hooked and like binge reading! Hahahah

Pros :

  1. Plot pacing in this web novel is perfectly done, how the author starts an arc, end it, and also transition to a new arc, absolutely well done.
  2. How author narrate char development, how the MC growing, how other char revolve around MC, unlike other authors that like to create a ton of char every arc end up forgetting after that char ark end, the author makes sure every char he/she introduced to the story keep revolving around the main storyline
Cons :

  1. Many ambiguous terms in char status sometimes confused the reader, either its from raw or translation quality.

The novel is pretty good but I do have a few complaints.
Spoiler

Is the MC really 26? This guy acts like he's 16, he comes off way too innocent and lacks common sense. But my main problem with the story is that this guy rarely uses his main ability. The one that's built up through the whole story so far. The one he's been saving up all his points to upgrade. What is the point in trying to upgrade the ability if the guy doesn't even bother using it? There are so many situations where he could be using it and he doesn't. It is very frustrating to read. You could maybe say he doesn't use it because he's afraid of losing it like the start of the story but even then that sounds like a poor excuse.

[collapse]

Other than that everything else is good.

MC has to explore everything on his own as he does not get all the future memories. He is one of the most human MC I have seen. I liked the other characters too and the story progression is very evident. I find it enjoyable to read, I hope you will like it too. Happy reading!

I've made an account just to comment about this one particular novel.

I've read quite a lot of them and honestly, this one is the only one that stands out so much. Translation is amazing, if every translator was half as good as Fudge, it would be amazing.

That aside, this story is so good in so many points, be it character development, world building, characters interaction,...

Everything is made so that we do understand that the main character is "special", but he ain't broken in any way. Of course he has subtle... more>> advantages, but they won't overcome any limit in half a second like typical wuxia novels.

I ain't gonna spoil anything, but from reading the reviews, you can see that it's pretty much one of the only novel that got so many 5 stars in the reviews. Just give it a go and you won't be able to stop :D

Enjoy ! <<less

Best thing I've read on this site, if it didn't have game-like mechanics it would be comparable to great high fantasy western novels. Fantastic characters that have interesting interactions and relationships as well as great world building.
