A Demon Lord’s Tale: Dungeons, Monster Girls, and Heartwarming Bliss

Description

One day, I woke up only find out that I’d become a Demon Lord, an individual responsible for protecting a dungeon. The world I’d been spirited away to was one filled with violence. Gigantic monsters wandered through it and competed with each other each and every day for the right to survive. I had no choice but to strengthen my dungeon’s defenses in hopes of living another day—or at least that was what I’d thought. For some odd reason, I instead ended up spending my days in relaxation and bliss.

This is Yuki’s story, my story. It tells the tale of how I spent my days after settling down in a dungeon with a self indulgent, “supreme” dragon girl and a young vampire.

At the beginning, ML and FL's way of approach and their development is fun and their way of handling situation -like Iruna rescue mission, ML's ideal haunted fortress and Trip to Town to Gain Info were nice and fun.

Thus it made a wonderful start but as it goes further especially after the ... more>>
Spoiler

King's rescue or Fake prince plot

[collapse]
no notable development taken place and ML's language felt annoying.

Spoiler

Even though Lefi and ML married - it didn't create much of a memorable scene and just ended up as one of another mating fight between alpha males.....

[collapse]

In a world said to be filled with various magical monsters like ML's summoned servants - wolf, snake, cat, bird monsters, Spirits... or Vampires, Elves, succubus, dragons, demons etc.... nothing was significantly explored.

ML soon joined the rank of world's strongest! - while his stats were still a fraction of Lefi's. Even if Lefi said to be the strongest - Why no other beings were even remotely close to her? - No explanation and left hanging.

And most importantly

  • MC's typical goody shoes savior behavior rather than earlier crazy otaku DL
  • Unnecessary loli additions,
  • No significant character growth in later chapters
were its demerits and thus it made the plot -boring and dragging.....

I was direct to this novel from Manga might bcoz of that or not, but I felt Manga is better than novel. Manga - 4/5.

MC language at Manga is great. (I might sound like Captain America, but you will understand, why I was like this - once read it, MC language is crap) If you tolerate conversation niches and some dragging scenario - this novel might reach 4/5. <<less

The beginning is superb.

But the more you read the more you feel how shallow decisions and characters are. Almost everything has explanation, especially relationships. But to be frank even if 5 chapters are explaining the reason of someone's feelings to MC, author still can waste all this chapters to repeat 'MC is great, comfortable and kind' 100 times. Which still doesn't explain why SHE likes hero. And author loves to waste paper and readers time in this way.

Good point is MC character but again after 200 chapters he is still... more>> empty for me.

Don't get me wrong story is easy to read and has good jokes. There is even some plot. So it's still worth your time. Just don't expect characters development. <<less

No I've changed my mind about this getting a 3.5. This novel is sh*t and the only reason it gets a three is because of the first half.

K lets start off. This novel is a slice of life novel (but not really because the protag seems to find trouble all the f*cking time). And you might think: Well thats good. But, no. There is no character development at all. The girls like the MC just 'because' except the loli dragon. And the protag loves using tr*sh talk. And I... more>> mean all he ever says is just really gangstery. No, its more gangbangey.

Well, I've might've overreacted a bit. Lets backtrack. First half of the story is great, seems like the protag has room for development and the love interests are ok. The plot is fairly good and it all makes sense. Then it goes to shit. And I mean shit. This novel does not deserve anything above a three, it just got that bad. First half: 5/5

Alright now lets move on, protag meets new girls, new girls have no personality. Protags personality just seems like he has a personality of a f*cking seashell, because he never really wants to f*ckING MATURE. New girls like protag, protag is having a fit because loli dragon. Loli dragon says its ok, FOR NO f*ckING REASON. Protag goes ahead and brings the new girls into the family. Then a character that was only mentioned in like only 20 chapters, never really developed, never had a strong plot, not a lot of backstory JUST f*ckING MARRIES HIM! Like what? You just married this weird f*cking side character because of a misunderstanding? With her father? So what you gonna f*ck her because her father said so?

Ok now lets move on. Here comes the lolis and plot holes! Protag has a lot of lolis, but it felt like a family at first and was kind of cute with its slice of life. Really liked the first half for that part, but he just goes ahead and f*cks them. Or probably f*cks them. Oh yeah did I forget to mention how bad the world building is? Well you might say: You dont need world building in slice of life. But no, the author had to make it a f*ck loli fest and ruined all the other characters to really not have any slice of life gimmick running for it. So he switches to trying to start an adventure, but it honestly never goes anywhere, it's really boring.

And you know... I really, really, really have no time to go ahead and fix all this grammar for such a dumb f*cking review. Dont read or youll be disappointed like everyone else. First half: 5/5 Second Half: 0/5. <<less

awesome novel, great characters, a little bland and a little shallow in the world building but its a slice of life focused on a small group of characters so you don't really notice it too often. This is slice of life done right, so much good fluff.

one of the few criticisms I can find with it is how it handles the screen time of the characters. When we transition from the whole group to a smaller group I feel kinda bad for those who get left behind as they don't... more>> get as much characterization. But the author put in enough effort to build up a foundation for everyone, so I don't think he is going to abandon them.

If you see reviews talking about how its boring, they probably read asian hobbyists lazy machine translations, don't make their mistake and read the cardboard translations instead. They put so much effort and emotion into the novel that it really makes it stand out. <<less

I must tell dat this novel had a good start, many aspects involved here dat make the novel it self such a unique one, comedy, hearwarming story, little bit of action so far, game elements like, and others.

For those who need some refreshing strory with game element and isekai background, I think this is the best one I found so far.

This novel is alright I guess.

Let's start with the main character first. Ngl, this novel's protag is quite different from other novels, and that might turn some of you off. The main character is an alpha at times, but also an extreme beta when in front of female characters. In other words: he's a massive simp. Now then, let's move on to the side characters. Just so you know, there is an ungodly amount of lolis so you should watch out for that. *Cough* Ok, the side characters aren't really... more>> anything to look forward to honestly, and there are also some that are just plainly annoying (hint: hero). I also don't like how the author makes completely s*upid characters and then tries to justify these completely s*upid characters, it's honestly very annoying.

Ok, then unto the world-building: the author seriously needs to stop being lazy and write an at least decent world-building. The world-building on the skills department is very unstable. Like with the sword mastery, for example. Yuki didn't improve his swordsmanship despite his swordsmanship reaching level 7, which is only 3 levels behind the max level, and he still kept swinging his sword like an amateur, which is annoying.

Demon arc rant: The entire demon realm arcs are forced. The demons found out that Yuki's the demon lord, despite Yuki never using his wings and actively hiding his identity when he's fighting in the beginning arcs. There's also the problem with the side characters, as none of the new ones introduced in the demon arcs are likable. This entire arc is just a mishmash of forced stuff and annoying characters, making it extremely frustrating to read.

And it's not just the demon arcs, a lot of the later arcs are also very forced, like the one with Lyuu's father, like: how the hell did Lyuu's father found that Lyuu's working as a maid in Yuki's castle? I'm pretty sure Lyuu didn't went to any civilization after he met Yuki.

But the translation of this novel is one of the best though.

I can sum up my issues with this novel with one phrase: out of place.

Many plot points and power ups just seem like they're forced on him out of nowhere, conversely there are bad guys and plot points he hears about and decides to do nothing about, but it never fails that doing nothing was not a good idea, yet he keeps making the same decision. Not only do major plot points come out of nowhere, but during each plot arc there will be more and more side story interjections... more>> at random points. Which never fail to include a character who's supposed to not be able to spend much time with the main cast.

The harem and romance are out of place, with a protagonist who acts alternately like an elementary school student bullying his crush or an old man with his wife of 40 years celebrating their anniversary. One of the wives in particular never gets treated as a love interest at all, before or after the engagement, she's just kind of there because the author wanted a girl of her race in the harem I guess.

There are a lot of leaps of logic on the author's part and the story just became a pain to read along the way. I think if the author took the harem out of the relationships (more than 3/4 don't even look old enough to be high school students) and left it as a basic adopted family, rearranged the order of events for a better plot flow, showed any sign of growth in the protagonist or his relationship with others, it would be pretty good, as it is it's just a mess. <<less

Possibly one of the best slice of life, isekai novels I've read so far. It blends together the comedic yet action-packed elements of a good story altogether very well.

The main character acknowledges the dumb decisions made by most novel protagonists and actually acts in a way that moves the story forward.

He's also is eccentric in a way that allows each chapter to be equally as entertaining as the one prior and the plot is logical in the way that it implicitly provides foreshadowing elements to future arcs/plots. The idea of... more>> "plot armor" does not really come forward as much as other isekai novels I've read.

There are complaints I've seen about people saying that the main character acts like a chūnibyō but it's there for entertainment purposes where he even acknowledges that it's a joke and it's not something that I considered to be cringeworthy. He mostly does it to create light banter with the side characters or his love interests.

Each of the characters, including the characters that aren't love interests to the main character, have good depth to them so that they can be seen favorably to the audience and contributes to the plot of the novel overall.

Spoiler

The main character gets together with the Supreme Dragon (Lefi), the Hero (Nell), & the Beastkin Wolf girl (Lyu). Leila also is interested in the main character but suppresses her feelings due to the fact that she does not want to interfere with the 3 lovers that the main character (Yuki) already has.

Before I start this I'd like to say if your on the fence of whether to read this or not, go ahead and read it, it's fantastic.

So in most reviews I have a few good and a few bad things about whatever I'm addressing but this is a special case. Ill fully admit I am not a big novel reader and only started this because I got tired of waiting for the manga. However this is fantastic beyond measure.

1:the translation. Holy sh*t it's fantastic. It feels almost alive in a... more>> sense that you will never find anywhere else. Even if the chapters are higher on a different translator just wait for cardboard translations as a major part of this story is the way it is phrased.

2:the story. It is the absolute perfect s.o.l novel in my opinion. Things are both laid back and intense depending on the chapter. The characters are the most likeable characters I have ever seen. Ever. Idk who the f*ck wrote them but they should be given an award.

3:MC. He knows who he is. He has logical emotions while also acting irrationally based on impulse. Idk how it works it just does. He accepts that he might have to commit evil to protect his family and does not falter in his commitment or duty to do so.

Overall 11/10 f*cking fantastic and you should absolutely give it a read. <<less

TLDR; A very uniqe read focusing on personal relationships and feeling, while providing a generous worldbuilding, action and a lot of fluff. I highly encourage you to read it and take it in, let the story wrap your heart around with love, dungeons, monster girls and a heartwarming bliss. :) Why do I read? Now, before you go, hear me out. I look for uniqueness and value in literature. This one has it all. I have read my fair share of iseaki and demon lords, but this one uses it "as a pretense" to write about human emotions. Mostly love and about what we value. It is not hard on the mind as it is pretty straightforward. The way it conveys those feelings and thoughts is untainted. This is why I love this masterpiece.

Now from a more technical point, if you are looking for an isekai adventure this one is pretty good. There is no bullsh*t random deus ex machina in it, pretty good power scaling and diverse world. First it might seem like it turns into some harem shit, but most definitely not.

For instance (spoilers)
Spoiler

I have never seen an isekai where love, family and personal values are discussed so naturally like between Yuuki and Lefi. Recently she is pregnant and for example the scene where she contemplates her new meaning in the long life as a supreme entity, or more like the first real responsibility and way that she shoulders is breathtaking

Sadowfax comment sum up the story well And this is far too cringe to be called slice of life.

"The writing in this story went from good to horribly cringy. ~The story is now full of a self-absorbed MC with a personality disorder~.

And the translation is mangled by a group who either decided to ~self-insert their own slangs and insults, or the author is actually an American (?) ~."

Same thoughts as the two reviews just before me. It was really good up until harem. ML and FL had good chemistry, a relationship that was cute and believably genuine. Then, out of nowhere, MC can't say no to other characters completely running the heartwarming and wholesome story up till that point. What makes it worse is that while the FL is a genuine character with some depth to her (definately my favorite character) the other two harem members are almost carbon copies of eachother who feel shallow by comparison,... more>> as if their relationships with the MC were added as an afterthought. It was such a sharp change that I wondered if the author was deliberately poking fun at the harem trope. I would have found that amusing in another story, but not in one that had been so enjoyably wholesome until then. The story is character driven, pretty well written, and is genuinely enjoyable. Lefi (FL) and Yuki (MC) really carry the story whenever they are together, and throwing in romantic sidekicks really just takes away from that. That's not to say there aren't good LNs that have harems. For instance, I really enjoyed Arifureta. But Arifureta has two major differences from A Demon Lord's Tale... Arifureta doesn't take itself seriously, and the characters are all well developed. In Arifureta even the harem members treat the situation as a running gag. However, all the characters are engaging and are given their time in the spotlight, endearing them all to the audience, with each being equally well written and developed with unique charecteristics that make it genuinely hard to pick a favorite. This, combined with Arifureta's theme being that the main characters are aware they lack all "common sense" and don't care, instead choosing to live happily in their own little bundle of crazy (much to the frustration of the supporting characters) leads to a harem that is actually entertaining and one of my favorite isekais. Having said that, I am still reading A Demon Lord's Tale. It is still an above average isekai that I enjoy and look forward to updates on, but I can't shake the feeling that it had the potential to be so much more. <<less

Not a very interesting or new take on this genre. Only thing I do give props for is the MC will go out of his way to kill people.

However, the MC has zero attention span, multiple jokes are over-used to the point its cringy, we got 2d villains appearing everywhere and he has NO plans for the future.

The worst thing I read, are the villains in this fic. Every time the plot moves forward it is due to evil r*pey humans. For Example:

Oh a vampire girl is running from s*avers,... more>> oh vampire girl gets captured with zero foreshadowing, oh our MC saves all the r*pe victims, oh a hero brings them into town where bandits proceed to try raping them and oh the prince is some kind of rapist.

Pretty much every other man in this fic is either a evil horney racist or some kind of ass kisser who worships our MC. All the girls flock to him like hens in heat and our MC refuses to kill woman no matter what. Where the plot of the story is based solely on our MC reacting to events. Where zero effort is spent in engaging any further with these events or branching off into other world building elements.

Overall, the fic is a slice of life, but with out the life aspect in it. Instead we have numerous POV switches in middle of story arcs that interrupt the flow of the story. While at the same time the pacing is abruptly stopped with scene transitions from him building things one moment to him going full mu*der hobo the next instant.

The novel had a promising start, but turned to tr*sh since the moment he summoned his first monster.

I really enjoyed this so far. Translations are done great, a nice SoL in a fantasy world, with a harem and OP protagonist. I am a bit unhappy with the size of the harem constantly growing, but can't complain too much about an entertaining story that I get for free.

That being said, I feel there is a lot of unfounded hate about the protagonist. Spoilers, btw.... more>>
Spoiler

People have pointed out a lot if inconsistencies with his personality, I.e. Lack of regrets in killing humans invading dungeon, being hard working on the dungeon, but not in improving personal skills, leaving the hero alive, etc. However, all these can be explained easily by one thing: the dungeon is altering his personality to increase its odds of survival.

Cba to cite chapters, but when he conquers another dungeon, he gets a notebook describing another Lord's descent to madness. It was speculated that the dungeon core alters its Lord's mind to best keep itself alive.

Lefi was right by where to the dungeon was. Out of all souls to make its dungeon lord, why Yuki? He was Levi's type, had a lot of knowledge (including about otherworldly food), and he was relatively smart. Heck, he even has a pair of wings Lefi is enchanted by, and attracts girls to him like a magnet.

While it is not established how intelligent a dungeon is yet, all these could easily be deliberate. What better way to ensure you, a dungeon, doesn't get destroyed? Get the freakin' Supreme Dragon to guard you.

Story started really good, I hoped that it'll not turn up to be a tr*sh. The way of speech of MC outright annoying but it was tolerable but it just goes out of control as the story moves forward that it just feels straight to boring that it's happening the same way again & again, it just felt like out-of-place. And at starting it was not an issue but now? Everytime MC sees kids & his wives & the way they act, he uses "adorable", "cute" & whatnot words so... more>> much that it feels like the author is trying to just fill the page. In each chapter, he states adorable, cute, cutie pie, words for like 5-6 or more times that it becomes annoying.

Spoiler

First100chap are kinda good, but as the story continues MC starts helping the neighbouring country & when the king & governor just do what 'has' to be done, the MC straightly state that the MC owes the king & the governor. This way of thinking is quite idiotic & not logical at all.

Story starts going down when he has to take Hero as his bride (dragon convinces him). After that it just feels like he's just helping & helping the hero while other characters are side characters. Lefi (Dragon) was not given enough screen time& it just felt like total let down, right now it feels like the story of romance of demon lord& hero, cuz he helps the hero just too much. After marry her he helped the country too much that it doesn't Evel feel like he's neutral. At this rate he won't even hesitate to go to war of human & demon, for that country & the Hero. And the way he distribute things, he gives teleport necklace to characters like Charlotte. And for the hero, she's totally useless & the only thing she can do is giggling, chuckling & whispering, while the other characters really feel like important, the hero is totally useless & always asking for help.

[collapse]

Many irrelevant things are written, kinda feels like that the chao is just written to fill the word requirement. At this point of time I can just see this series going down not because of harem but because the hero & just his irrelevant things, the way the hero is given a spotlight, other characters feel like highly side characters to me.

Characters don't actually feel like acting according to the logic & the way how things actually was & should be, kinda feels like author is forcing the hero & the MC to remain together.

I seriously hope that the story improves. Like a twist is needed, like the Hero was actually using the MC for her country's sake, so that he'll help them & she actually doesn't love him.

I hope characters starts acting like how they should & acting via logic. Just to give fan service & make the story just "another" cringe & idiotic story. <<less

I have read my fair share of Isekai, this not the fanciest World ever, but a solid MMO-World, where this Story shines, is the interaction between the protagonist and all others.

I wouldn't call it 'Slice of Live', but it shows clearly, what will happen, if you love life, good food and have kami-like powers.

Really enjoy this WN, this is one of the one's that I try to catch up on as regularly as I can. The MC is pretty OP, but gradually gets into it at the beginning as is more helped by his OP friend around him. The relationship's that he has with the girls and other characters that gravitate around him are really enjoyable to read, although one downside is that the MC sometimes goes a little overboard with his strong personality (although can't knock him too much since he's... more>> a Demon Lord).

The story, in general, flows pretty nicely. The MC just basically want's to be left alone to do his thing, and even though he's pretty ruthless to people he deems enemies, he for the most part has a somewhat ethical mindset and helps out the friends that need it. There are several arcs that the MC has gone through by chp 166, and you can start seeing the makings of an overarching story beat that is happening throughout the world that keeps it pretty interesting.

Overall I would recommend if you're looking for a MC with a pretty unique personality, even though it does follow some of the tropes of other JP WN's. I would also put it somewhere between a Slice of Life and action, there are chapters where it's just day to day lives and then there will be an arc over the course of a couple dozen chapters with action (so be aware 0f this if you're just looking for nonstop action). I would rate somewhere around 4.3 overall. <<less

One of my favourite web-novels here, though there still are some things that kinda don't sit well with me.

For once, I feel like some heroins get neglected. Harem's not really my cup of tea but this novel somehow manages to not ruin it. Just, give them somewhat equal screentime, please?

Then there's the fact that we don't get too much insight in the characters' past. E.g. It was mentioned that Yuki, at some point, told his wifes that he's reincarnated but almost nothing about how they reacted. Maybe that'll change later on though. And about some of his wifes we don't actually know anything significant about their prior lives. Makes them feel not quite real and it's hard to bond with them.

Aside from that, all characters have pretty unique personalities and are very likable. They're hilarious.

World building is okay.

Story is good.

Romance is sweet but could be more.

Comedy is great.

Last but not least, the translation is awesome. Better even than some official ln translations. <<less
