This novel is only the second Er Gen novel I have read. The first one, ISSTH, has been kinda dropped by me after the drastic drop of quality after the point where Meng Hao's cultivation went past Spirit Severing. This one instead has its ups and downs, but generally the story-line quality has been kept consistently decent even after more than a thousand chapters.

This novel has the longest prologue period I have ever seen though. This novel only properly begins after

Li Muwan dies, some time after 300 chapters or so. Wang Lin's quest to revive her is basically the overarching plot of this novel.

[collapse]

And his adventures when doing exactly that, where he participates in auctions, slapping the faces of arrogant young masters, become an alchemist, a carver, a mortal, a 'rapist' et al. Those adventures are far more interesting than Meng Hao's, which makes me wonder what happened to Er Gen between those two novels. Probably too much peyote. <<less

An interesting novel with excellent world building, a decent premise, and some of my favorite characters from any novel (Situ is the best). Another solid work from Er Gen, with swift and quality translations to boot. And though some parts may seem to drag the way I see it they're always setting up for interesting payoffs which make the waits quite worth it. All and all if your looking for something to read that you could just sink into this might be the novel for you.

Renegade Immortal is an awesome novel. I have been following it for about a year now. The twists and turns during the adventures of Wang Lin have been quite enjoyable. I am particularly fond of the approach to his cultivation and his journey of seeking the Dao. Definitely would recommend this!

Renegade Immortal or Xian Ni as we used to call it back when I started on it, is another one of Er Gen’s masterpieces. One that will take the reader through a roller coaster of emotions.

Marked as a tragedy the reader will go through all the plights of loss that Wang Lin experiences. But it is satisfying none the less with the scaling and friends he makes across his journey. The romance is unique in how it thaws his heart over time and then hits your where it hurts, I... more>> suppose you can say that even I got emotionally attached. All of this takes place in a vast world consisting of various realms and levels with a great history behind each one. Did I mention he also collects various beasts and such for battle.

Coming to read RI is like being by the side of an ancient master it humbles you. Truly one of my best reads yet. 10/10 <<less

I really like the MC of this one. It is one of those novels that really attached me to the character. For those saying that he has a horrible character because he walks the path of slaughter, you are just all wrong. He became a mass mu*derer because the first time he spared someone, it costs the lives of everyone from his clan. Then he knows that if you have a kind heart in their world, you will be the one that will be killed. Then sh*t happens.

Reading this novel is like climbing a tall mountain...

Exhiliarating along the way, Interesting while moving forwards... But like a shitty steep cliff going up once the story falls from its plot.

My Cons for Xian Ni:

I hate the fact that the writer rushes some scenarios. There are instances where the author could've added a little more scenes (and it would've been fine). There were a lot of open pages (which were fine being left out) but would've made the story packed and full. (I guess the author is trying not to... more>> stay generic, and is saving some plots as reserves)

Once the story gets generic and uninteresting, it's hard to comeback. I had instances where I would like to drop the novel (I would suggest to find an alternative to switch back and forth once this happens).

It's all about the Treasures. Treasure this, treasure that. Don't they have an alternarive term for their stuffs?... like, STUFF?...

My Pros:

This is the only novel where the MC gets killed AF. I know this may sound messed up, but think about it, but I think this was a smart move by the author. The MC got a chance to start over or recuperate from a weak state. And the story had an oportunity to shift and evolve from one theme to another. This makes the story interesting over and over.

I hope to read books as versatile as this. I thank the author and the translator. <<less

Yes, I dropped the series quickly. Although it wasn't because of any realism problems or anything like that. It's because every page of the book was depressing. I thought the writing seemed pretty good for an Asian novel. I seriously couldn't stand how drawn out and depressing the opening was. Chapter after chapter of this horrible downward spiral where the protagonist gets his dreams trampled on over and over. For the first fifteen chapters at least, EVERYTHING turns out as depressing as it can possibly be. The fact that telling... more>> you that spoils the first half of the first book should make you reconsider reading this. Even when he first gets that mystical bead he doesn't immediately power up like many MCs of other webnovels. His hard work still puts him at the bottom of the hierarchy.

So the first 70 chapters or so were great. I quite liked the writing style and pace. I tried not to think too much about the whole

revenge logic. I liked how MC is not an evil-only-because-I'm-misunderstood character but his morals really do get skewed. It's refreshing.

What I didn't like was that even though MC was powering up, cultivating, going on adventures and seemingly working towards revenge which honestly is only present when we're reminded through a specific sentence or two after tens of chapters, the goals felt so insignificant. Is his long-term goal really long term? I didn't feel or understand how badly he wanted to achieve some things. I think that's mainly due to the lack of emotional description. There's more explanation than description for sure. Romance is basically non-existent.

I'll push through with this novel since I'm still slightly curious of where the MC is headed but it's probably something I'll also read on and off. I just need to remind myself not to question motives and reasons. It's survival of the fittest in the world of Xian Ni. <<less

The first work of Er Gen.

It was a long ride reading the whole novel and I was glad I did it.

There are some lose ends, but the ending is still satisfying. I like how the author gave the readers a choice or to imagine who is the real Wang Lin or not in the end.

... more>> The novel is quite complex in it self and given me a lot of thinking about where we come from and where we are going.

I've also been given insight of life while reading this novel about family and about myself.

It also opened up my cautious side. How not to trust lightly on others because human beings are greedy and evil in nature.

In the end it was a wonderful ride I enjoyed reading this novel. I certainly learned a lot. I know it's a fantasy novel but it also gives a realistic point of view on human nature, from rich to poor, from strong to weak, lies and deceptions so on and so forth.

The novel is quite dark and I like how the writer was able to give at least some laughs here and there. <<less

I don't really like rating something 5 stars. 4 stars means it was absolutely amazing where 5 stars means its perfect. Problem with being perfect is that its extremely flawed. You change anything for any reason and that means that 5 stars is now a 1 as there is no 0. But I can't lie, to me this is a 5 star. Its one of those novels that was perfect, keep in mind reviews are opinions and while there are probably roughly 8 billion people in the world so basically... more>> no one is special at this point. At the same time nobody is the exact same.

From looking at other reviews I saw one calling MC s*upid. That is extremely accurate. He is insidious, but extremely dumb. His personality is rough, again as other reviews say he constantly in seclusion. He is basically cultivation equivalent to a shut in keyboard warrior. Only there is no internet therefore his personality is shaped by the beginning of his short life before he became a cultivator and short period of time when he first became a cultivator.

Spoiler

In the beginning his life is with his parents as he studies to become an official. Unlike usual clans with infighting still generally look to promote themselves while not harming the overall strength of the clan/family. In here there is animosity in his own family. To the point it could be said there is hatred. Literally MC is thought to have tried to kill himself, and evidence supports that. Not what really happened but just that alone shows mentality of MC before he became a cultivator. Say what you will about su*cide, but people are terrified of death, while su*cide is usually in a set tolerance with mitigation of dark emotions that offset the fear of death. Do you think those people don't fear death anymore? His will itself has already been shown before that event. These two plot points set up the very foundation of this novel and MC personality.

[collapse]

From beginning events happen back to back and not a joke to say story itself is f*cked up. If your reading the novel and not s**ked in, just looking back at it once shows the overall theme of the novel is not going to have tribulations overcome by the power of friendship, believe it!

Back to the s*upidity of the main character, he is hands down dumb. His insidious nature was nurtured from the beginning as he watches daggers fly and everyone seems to have their backs to everyone else without any caution. What makes the main character dumb is not that he can't think or comprehend, its in fact the opposite. He is a stubborn piece of shit. Which means he is only supported by one of the most unholy and ungodly writing assistance known to man, luck aka plot armor. He goes in knowing what he is doing is f*cking ret*rded. Yet still does it because while he might change his mind, he won't bend.

This creates a magnetic relationship between love and hate. In all honestly this novel should only be maybe twenty to thirty chapters. Obviously that would be horrible and even those who love or hate this novel would have likely read past that point. Thus a battle of epic proportions takes place during the entire story. Because of the character you either love or hate, your left with this love hate relationship with what could only be considered bad writing. No matter how well written a story is even in fantasy you can't have your cake and eat it too.

This battle is between luck/plot armor and continuation of the story without changing who the main character is. Thus one has to decide for themselves if they are willing to stomach this battle. From my perspective, which is MY OPINION, battle isn't really all that epic. I got s**ked in so my opinion isn't completely valid. To those who don't get s**ked in to the MC character will probably have to battle it out themselves to determine if they will lose or if author loses.

These two final notes lightly related directly to the story.

Spoiler

Final notes that should always be brought up in this genre is setting. Setting doesn't give a sh*t about you, author isn't coming to you to ask if this is a good idea or not. While an author will want a reader to enjoy their book. In reality person writing the book isn't you. In a sense if one wants to read fantasy they have to for a lack of betters words, f*ck off. It is fantasy, meaning this isn't the real world. Large selection of stories do take place on a parallel earth, some even with a modern setting. This is not one of them, majority of thoughts and opinions at this point are flawed. Look at reviews across NU and you will find reviews that criticize a story by outright stating things that make little if no sense if you read the comment as part of the story itself.

This is ultimately my way of saying, fantasy is in the very name not our world. So before we can comment on why a person acts or their ideology, I simply ask, look at the setting. Tired of seeing comments basically saying the novel sucks because people don't wash their hands in the years of bc.

Another key thing I have seen before is about relationships. Cultivation stories are difficult in this manner. Large number of people like cultivation novels and love side characters. Problem is, cultivation isn't a wuxia story. This isn't something that happens in the span of a hundred years. Cultivation stories happen in span of thousands to tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years expanding across lands that are often larger than landmass of earth combined and entire solar systems. While its fantasy, the setting is still realistic in ancient setting. Lifespan in cultivation stories is still fairly accurate depending on the setting. Add into the fact that cultivation is almost always about 1%'s. Those with talent to cultivate are only 1% of population, of those the number is still only 1% can break through to next level.

Because lifespan expands this balloons the numbers to appear this might not be the case if one doesn't think about it. Now combine that with the fact MC is forced out of the very country he was born in. Combine the two facts and side characters are extremely tricky. In this novel it is realistic and it is addressed in the novel but very subtly.

Renegade Immortal will always be my favorite Cultivation novel ever, it is simply incredible.

The story starts off slow but if you can get past the first 150'ish chapters you're on for a ride, I'm not saying they are bad, just slower, as it focuses on explaining how the world works and on character development. After that, it just gets better and better. Wang Lin is by far my favorite MC and you can understand and respect all of his decisions, even the bad ones.

The romance isn't its strong point for... more>> sure, if you are interested in well written romance, this is not for you, but it isn't the focus. While it isn't well written, it isn't bad, I would say, since I don't like romance very much, and this novel doesn't mention it as much its all good to me :p

One of the best if not the best cultivation novel I have read. Reason being is because it does not have many inconsistencies like most have, is straight forward, great story and ending.

The only reason I like 'A Will Eternal' more is because 'Renegade Immortal' takes itself too seriously for its own good. Don't think I like this novel. In the whole novel, I think MC never really love any woman, only a lingering sentiment towards Li Muwan. Rather than saying he's defying heaven, more like he's trying to defy fate that happens to him. I think the MC was too dumb, if only he allowed Li Muwan to reincarnate that time, there probably no need too wait 2000 years for him to reunite. Somehow Meng Hao was much better in this aspect than Wang Lin.

Years counting was f*cked up and numbers too... more>> like usual. The scheme's involved the whole story, for which also a decrease rating for me. Also hating the many so called 'beautiful women' while Li Muwan was just so so. Why mentioned it all the time? <<less

Another tr*sh wuxia novel where the same old template has copied and pasted with only changes being names of characters and places, and bits of story. But they're all the same pile of horse manure.

In case you're wondering here's the template:

  1. Insert seemingly honest and naive protagonist, who suddenly becomes petty, vengeful, arrogant, lying and dishonourable two faced brat as soon as he starts cultivating.
  2. Insert people around MC who all sneer and insult him for absolutely no reason except to make themselves feel good. They are also lying, thieving, backstabbing, greedy, ass-licking snakes that nobody in their right mind would want to be around, but pretty much all wuxia books are filled with them.
  3. Make the MC constantly try to get back at these people for being wronged all the time.

Good book. I would quote a guide to the chapters from a wuxiaworld review.

0-100 : Decent

100-150 : Gets better, good

... more>> 150-250 : Great

250-500 : Amazing

500-2088 : Awesome

It was Er Gen's first book so he gets better with more chapters.

The MC is kinda cool. Character growth is nothing special, he was naive at first (never s*upid), till 30-40 he drops it. Till 100 chapters, his character is totally developed.

I like him, he doesn't kill freely but he is not afraid to kill people who offend him. He also doesn't spares Jade beauties (unlike Meng Hao), he kills them whenever necessary.

The romance is nothing special as the MC totally falls for the female lead and like most of Er Gen's book she is used as a tragic plot device.

Cultivation realms are well defined. MC's cultivation is fast, but it still takes 100s of chapters to go to the next level.

I dropped thge novel around 1700 chapters during the final war.

Spoiler

The final war was basically inner realm vs outer realm. And inner realm people who join outer realm's force are somehow supposed to be scum. MC of course supports the inner realm, I don't get why. Nobody supported him and the people in power always opposed Wang Lin.

[collapse]

The author uses few clinches but they don't come out as cringe. The author knows how to write things in a epic manner. Just imagine a 100 foot giant punching the heavens. The treasure realm/secret realm arc are long, many and boring.

Its Er Gen's first and best work.

Its totally worth reading <<less

I’m only at 210/ 2088 so only 1/10th there, I’m guessing more will be happening later? The first 200 episodes are just about him training up so far and becoming more n more emotionless.

Emotionless as in no sidekick/ family/ love interest/ enemy (just cannon fodder villains so far) - nothing much else happens besides him trying to power up, so at this point o don’t really care about him. Lots of other male leads that are described as cold hearted or ruthless, but our MC here, well a more apt... more>> description would be he doesn’t experience anything that makes him happy/ sad so he’s really bland right now.
I’m getting a bit tired at this stage coz u can’t really get interested in a MC/ story like this, but I’m gonna hang in there for a while more to see if the story gets better.

might change my review then. <<less

Even though this is a must-read novel, it of course has it's bad sides. I also don't know how Wang Lin got in love with that bit*h Li Muwan. The first of Er Gen's stories, although weirdly, was the last one I read because I started the manhua and thought the reading of something I'd already seen was boring, in the end, it was worth it.

Honestly, this is such a good story but similar to all of Er Gen's works as the ending is quite fast-paced with a lot of power jumps and plot holes not answered. The mortal arcs were the true bread and butter of this story as they made it so much more enjoyable.
