This is my personal opinion about overgeared. For ~4 years of reading novels overgeared had a significant emotional impact to me. I felt myself in the novel as spectator. I saw Grid's growth as a person, a player, and as a man. He was an unfortunate man before he got pagma's descendant, but he shook off the shackles that bounded him. He grew up because of self-reflection and because of his friends he can count on.

There are many imperfections in this novel but it's my opinion so honor it atleast.

He learned a lot of things Friendship, being a guild leader, being a king, and being a role model. His personal growth of having a weak mindset to growing strong and dependable He met the NPC Khan and also the overgeared guild, Steim and Irene, Graham etc.

I laughed at the silly misfortunes of grid, awed and amazed at him achieving the impossible.

The story was predictable; sure it's because of plot armor. But I don't care about it; so much so that reading chapters brings me joy. But it also gave me emotions of sadness, that sadness is the death of khan. Grid met him and became his friend, he saved his smithy being taken by an evil company, he reminded Khan of his son in him, he treated him as his grandfather, and he is his first support before stepping on the world stage (I don't count smith and ashur). He was always there for Grid.

Khan was old. NPC doesn't live that long Grid played the game for just a few years. But in the game it's already a decade, he may have received blacksmith affection that increased an NPC's life, but time flows. Legends fall and new legends of newer generations will rise to replace them. But in that span of time, their relationship grew and solidified and it saddens me to see the passing of Khan, he was growing old (I won't elaborate but I encourage you to read it) and it pained me to read it, it was so vivid for me and made me want to write this while crying. The feeling of loosing someone important to you, the pain and sadness that comes along with it, I haven't finished with reading it yet but I'll rate it 10/10

The only novels that gave me this emotion is ISSTH and Overgeared.

Got to appreciate how Overgeared kicked off with a "Second Chance" plot, in a more natural way than I'm used to from Korean WNs. But it leads to a meandering story regarding a super advanced VRMMORPG, inundated with countless misunderstandings and inane dialogue. Featuring a naive, self-centered, lucky ass-hat of an MC. Until other character storylines converge into his, forming a decent 'rise to fame' story. Filled with epic quest, massive Guild conflicts and the kind of fun crafting I haven't read since EEiaR.

With so many remarkable NPCs that'll easily... more>> immerse anyone in the vast expansive virtual world. A virtual world that feels so lived in that it's easy to ignore the unbalanced nature of the game, until stats like "Divinity" come into play.

Eventually it does get tiresome, once Grid becomes tolerable, as side characters continuously sing the praises of God Grid's every competent action. Or whenever there's a fun event and near everyone spews out excessive amounts of nationalism. <<less

I've read a few reviews before reading myself and braced the story of a tr*shbag in the beginning, but the more I've read, the more it seemed that 'every word in this story existed to be cool' and not really logical.

The Tournament part just broke me.

Spoiler

Author points out multiple times how much the Satisfy tournament is an event on pair with Olympic, but then they want to tell me this event wouldn't specify that contestants can't be late to party? Really?

It's like a person emerging in a later parts of triathlon marathon, and everyone would be okay to give them the same rewards as for people who were running from the beginning? Don't joke me.

Author likes his character too much and wants him to be in a spotlight always, but there should be at least a little crumb of logic left in what's happening!

The novel is tr*sh. The MC is literally nothing you'd want in an MC. Characters with flaws are great - qualifying that they have redeeming character traits of some sort. I think the author made a very poor attempt to be ironic/funny by making the MC a brainless, irredeemable, ass - or as a consequence of the poor attempts of comedy, the character's personality became one-dimensional.

Perhaps this novel is just not my cup of tea, but from what I've read of other reviews, the MC has "character development" and "improvement".... more>> In my opinion, no matter how much you develop a one-dimensional character, if you don't take the character up to the next step and really elevate a character to the point where readers can actually connect and feel what the characters feel, then that one-dimensional character will always be one-dimensional no matter how much you develop it. Realistically, who can connect with the main character's personality?

Also, I hate the duplication girl, dunno why, I just hate her. She's like Nancy from Stranger Things, I just hate her. <<less

Most Accurate and Unbiased review!!

The MC's name is Grid, and this novel is written by a korean author and translated by rainbowturtle on WW. The main character is a Korean and 26 years old. He has a family of mom, dad, and 1 sister.

Ok lets get to the review now.

In this world there is a game that is basically another life (its a VR game), main character takes a huge loan to buy the special capsule to play this game. His family is poor and he strugles and eventually... more>> does good in the game and is debt free. He also get back at all the people who hated and laughed at him.

Most of the people will say the first 90 chapters are bad, but actually they are the best because after chapter 96 (litrally) the MC will start shitting gold and diamond, and every single character in the story is a tool. The strongest players are defeated at his foot within seconds. The prettiest and richest girls in the world are leaving their country, fame, dignity, and respect to just suck him off. This is still a biased review btw, trust me.

Basically after chapter 96 the Grid just keeps concurring every thing in his path and keeps becoming rich and popular while every one calls him god and greatest being in the existence and the most cringes stuff imaginable. He is basically the richest person every, even USA, France, Canada, Russia, and all the big nations leaders can't his attention, IT - IS - CRAZY.

All his friends and s*aves (actual players willingly) easily become stronger then the Number 1 player in the f*cking game in 5 chapters. Its a f*cking joke. I don't understand why this novel is so popular but there is not realism, his enemy will keep losing easily and his friends will get best in class for literally doing nothing. <<less

Yes, I believe each of us have their own opinion about the novel but please don't drag down the novel because of your self imposed picture of a 'should-be' protagonist in your head. Are you even perfect? If you were in his position what will you do? I must say, people who were dissing the novels so badly has a poor character and bad intention. Jealous with the fact that they saw or read a character that wasn't perfect from the start but wanted to grow through himself with the... more>> help of others beside him.

I don't know why you have to bring down the novel because you didn't like it or should I say that the picture in your head that was YOU isn't in line with God Grid.

If I were to list everything that made the novel quite a read then I would have been labelled as those who didn't have a taste. But, let's face it, bringing people down, stepping on others, insulting, hating, malicious comment because of envy and lack of self importance because they didn't like one particular fact were human nature. Yes! I'm talking about those who were dissing my favorite novel!

Especially when I remembered how
Spoiler

Khan died because he wanted the best for Grid! Under his last breath he made an armor for Grid because he saw him not just an adventurer but a real person that would leave his legends behind others. He wasn't perfect yet he was inspired by Grid! He changed because of Grid! Let's not forget that those who invented the game couldn't do anything about the game because they let the players decide the future of the game

[collapse]

It made me cry when I read that but because of you people bringing down the novel the others who were interested at the start viewed the novel lowly! Yes! I was also affected because of the bad review but thankfully I wasn't prejudice enough not to be opinionated at the start. I let the story progressed. I saw his growth like how a novel should be. Inspiring us, learning something from it, not OP characters from the start who viewed themselves as superior than others.

Let God Grid show how an untalented person changed the whole gaming world because of his unlucy yet lucky encounters and effort. Be amazed, experience the thrill watching a hatchling turned into a grown up adult who was not perfect yet ready to change for his friends, colleagues, and family.

Don't let those who gave bad reviews stopped you from experiencing the thrill I got when I read this novel. Thank you for reading this review about my dissatisfaction from those hate reviews. Lowly people with bad characters. Envious of those who were succesful and the heart to change. I must say that you really brought the novel down. The art that should have been circulated was broken by you lowly people. I, thank you, bishes. <<less

There are 3 things that I would like to mention about Overgeared:
1. Writing Style
2. World Building
3. Character Development

The way Overgeared is written is very interesting and very easy to follow. It makes the reader feel like they are playing a very good mmorpg and the MC (Grid) is their controlled character. Every loot, level-up and achievement that the MC makes feels like an achievement to the reader. Also, the way the author mixes in good comedy without turning it into a gag novel is very commendable. It... more>> could be compared to Sword Art Online Season 1 in terms of game-like-elements and with intense and exciting story, but without the fear of death for the characters. It is very light hearted and the way the chapters are cut makes you curse the translators for leaving a very good cliff-hanger. The pacing of the novel is slow and would feel like it is dragging on and on (as an element of adventure stories), but it would still be worth it to read it.

The world of Overgeared is very vast. It features the real world (China, South Korea, etc.) and the virtual world of Satisfy. The author gives a enough descriptions that it is easy for the reader to envision the place and the actions being taken by the characters. The East Continent in Satisy gave of an Asian cultivation novel feel while the Western Continent felt very medieval fantasy. The world of Satisfy features various places like desert areas, forests, caves, dungeons, temples, underwater cities, etc.

The characters in the story are very well-developed. The author makes a good effort in making the characters relatable by giving them good backstories. Their personalities are very constant. I would actually like to applaud the MC's character development. His personality development and change did not feel sudden (from selfish to valuing his comrades). His change in values were supported by strong and eventful experiences in the story. Actually he retains some of his original personality traits in the later chapters despite becoming "a better person". The supporting characters are also given enough screentime so it is better to love and relate to them. However, some characters are getting less and less screentime as a consequence of having a vast character pool. <<less

There some novels that you always see on the "must read" list, overgeared is one of then for some good reasons.

Ok the start is good but MC is a dork, there is no other way to describe it, MC dont have money, good friends, lover or even a functional iq, he is just a dumb pseudo soldier (and not even a good one!) who is about to be cheated by a npc and then get the "luck" of being stuck with a "millionaire item", what? Oh you already read something... more>> like this plot somewhere uh? Almost all of the other vr novels have an underdog and a "magical item"... Well sure this is an overused formul- ops yeah nope, this IS Overgeared after all.

Grid is dumb, egoist, but persistent and getting an legendary item that cant be sold just add to hes pain, so you will not see he magically becoming a good person, grow a smart brain or even get rich in a single night, nope and this is the best thing in Overgeared, there's no magical solution.

Grid/Shin Youngwoo will learn how to become a better human one small step after another, the moment he finally got money he learn to share with hes family, when forced to play a new class he learn how to play properly, the moment he got some good friends he learn to care and work with the people around him, the moment he got a vr marriage he learn that every woman in real world are sh*t and only the vr waifu worth true love... Well he learn some bad things too ok?

This novel initially is not about a vr game, sure we have a very good vr world, mightly side characters with heavy past, decent battles and a handful of memorable moments, we got even a "Broken Back Mountain" like bromance with Braham, but this is secondary at least until chapter 700-800, before that Overgeared is all about how someone broken is getting fixed using the game, relationships and some good luck to become a complete human again.

After 700~800 chapters the real world become less and less, the focus go to the game wars, massive competitions and some deep development over the "npcs" from here on we got ourselves some real vr action that are good too, right now Grid empire must develop and expand and this will lead to new wars, some powerful enemies are closing in and the creators of the game keep talking about the apocalipse, so we do have some action for the future.

Overgeared is a very good novel that describes how someone can be broken and regenerate, also is a competent vr novel about a world at war with very good plot and action in it, but still have some flaws, Grid now is like the behemoth MC, when he appears things usually got solved, there where some issues of nationalism/Racism (?), but really when a "hero" of a nation fails like Hao from China/Grid (when he "abandoned" the competition) things get ugly, it's not the nation, it's the chat, just read the twitter and be sad about that truth... trough some people dont like the "side chat" it is real and generally is what you read over a chat, I just hope Overgeared does not suffer from the bad end sindrome that atack so much good novels and series, one GoT end is enough for a decade or two. <<less

WARNING: The series starts out with a very unlikable MC and you will probably have to force yourself somewhat to read the first 50 or so chapters. Trust me he has something very rare called REAL CHARACTER GROWTH.

With that warning out of the way I wanna say that this is one of my favorite series. It has at the time of this review 1126 chapters and unlike a lot of chinese novels I've read, I never get the feeling that the author is just reusing old plots again with a... more>> different coat. The story often references old events that at the time of reading them seemed just as another thing happening on the author's whim, but later on seem to have quite huge impacts on the world.

About the characters I can only say that most of the side characters (and there's a lot of em) also have a lot of depth to them and even though we never get real arcs for them, every time that we see them again after a while it feels like they actually have changed somewhat.

So in conclusion Praise God Grid!!!!!!!! <<less

I am not here to give any review,

But this is a kind reminder for those users, who haven't even read 10% of total chapters, which is around 110 chapters.

I mean how could a reader give an proper and complete review when they are damn stuck on chapters around 40 or even 30.

Instead of spreading one's irritation in the form of reviews, it would be much bettet to be considerate of the words a user writes.

I've been reading Overgeared for quite some time and figured I'd make it my first review.
Anyways, I know a lot of people have stated you need to get past the chapter 100 or so mark before it's even worth reading and I have to agree with this.
If you're not planning on sticking with an immature, piece of sh*t and ultimately garbage human being for at least 100 chapters, don't even bother starting this. You'll hate it, and just waste your time.
If you want a character that actually... more>> develops into a functioning human being, and then proceeds to do epic sh*t read this. You have to stick with it, but it does get good. And it's infinitely more satisfying because of it. It's a book where the main character never, and I mean neaver stops improving.
There is a bit of nationalism in there, but it isn't all that bad. Apart from that well, ganbatte! <<less

This is my first review.

Overgeared is a story of Shin Youngwoo, a man who is in debt and failing to make up his earnings until he gets the class "Pagma's Descendant".

It starts off like another one of your "Weak to Strong" due to an artifact or gift story, with Pagma's descendant showing pretty fraudulent specs. Think of other stories on WW, like MW and BTTH. These characters usually gain a sort of artifact that they use to advance much faster than their peers and eventually rise to the top. If... more>> it isn't an artifact it's a great old man. If it isn't an elder person it's a spirit, or beast, or weapon, or etc, etc, etc.

It starts off like that.

However you quickly realize that, indeed, while the Class he gets may be fraudulent in certain aspects he lacks many skills and real life abilities (control) to make up for the shortcomings. Pagma's descendant isn't an all-powerful class that masters swordsmanship, masters blacksmithing and uses magic. No.

The person who does all those things is Grid, our character. We don't get mad that he gets that myth rated weapon, we don't call bs on how he gets those NPCs. We truly see him earn his way to get those items and have those NPCs respect him.

Like any good story, the main focus is on our main character, Grid. He starts off as a despicable, downright unlikeable person who people would not like at all. And yet, after reading chapter after chapter I find myself rooting for him. Why? It's simple.

Part 1- Character Development

This is one of the authors strongest points in this novel. It doesn't show, it does and it does it right, very right.

Grid is hateful. Yes very hateful. You don't want this lucky yet hard-working as*hole to win and yet he does. But in the process of winning he gains much more than just a simple power up or XO INSERT ARTIFACT HERE. No, Grid obtains real, close hearted relationships and struggles that he hadn't had in real life through Satisfy. We see him over time become a better person, with increasing responsibilities. He doesn't immediately go from tr*shy Personality to 'I got married so I'm going to be the perfect MC now'. He's still tr*shy sometimes but he gets the job done. He works, he tries and he cries. The relationships that Grid build up all come full circle, with them helping him and eventually him helping them. Whether it's giving his guild members his items or seeing a poor old man off at his last seconds, the important part is the relationships. He becomes a better person due to the people around him, not due to some twisted personality change and it is one of the best graces this novel has to offer.

Part 2- The World

Satisfy is not just a game. It isn't a lifestyle or a contest, no. It's a living, breathing world, full of different npc's, personalities and situations. There could be a royal power struggle involving nobles, or a great demon threatening the world, or even just a lonely farmer trying to farm his crops. The different religions, continents, species, areas- everything comes together to create a dynamic world with many situations that normally wouldn't happen in a normal VRMMO novel. (Praise Lim Cheolho!)

Part 3- Side Characters

Ah yes, the dreaded side characters. In most novels, these side characters are just lumps of text, built specifically to raise the MC up, with no defined personality or relationships apart from the MC.

Not here. All the side characters have well-defined personalities with goals and relationships with other people. I'll give a great example of two characters who are amazing side characters.

Pon and Vantner.

Pon- the joke-able, easygoing yet serious, dual spear user.

Vantner - The hard-working, friendly, sometimes pathetic (bald jokes), solo who gets clowned all over the world due to being bald.

These two have a friendship whose development is not shown in the novel, and yet you can believe it. These guys have been mentioned by several other characters who state that they've been partying together for a long time. When
Spoiler

Vantner dies to Grid's chaotic clone, you can see Pon's anger due to Vantner 'working so hard for month's just to get a level' 'You took away all that hard work you bastard!'

[collapse]

Part 4- The Goal's and antagonists

This is getting a bit long-winded.

I'll end it at this last part, Grid's goals and the people who push him forward. There are three I would like to focus on, who each have different personalities and one of which I favor heavily compared to the others.

Grid has many goals. There isn't an 'end goal' or anything like that, because Satisfy, like I've said, is another reality. You can't have an end to reality can you? No. Instead, Grid has many different, and constantly new and changing goals. They change to fit the situation, and they fit well in line with his character.

Now for the Antagonists/Driving Opposite.

I use the term 'Driving Opposite' because Overgeared doesn't really have antagonists. It has too much freedom for something like that. Instead we have people. Yes people. Normal ass people who strive to work hard in-game, gain honor, or just want to live a new reality. The three character's I'll be talking about will be Kraugel, Hurent, and Agnus.

Spoilers ahead!

Spoiler

Kraugel, the 'Sky above the Sky'. Hurent, A person who now lacks confidence in himself, and is working his way back up. Agnus, a broken maniac who seeks to live his life in satisfy, to forget his past. Not all three of them are driving forces, because Hurent doesn't really drive Grid forward. No, he is a great example of a person who fell from above, to now be a common person and to leave his arrogance behind. He drives the characterization part of this story forward, and I'm excited to see where he goes. I find myself rooting for him the most, but he isn't who I prefer.

Kraugel- The 'Genius'. Enough said, he's a pretty boy with a love for his mother (non-taboo) and tries to make her better and heal her Alzheimer's.

Agnus- The best 'antagonist-like' character in this novel. We don't know why he acts how he does in the beginning but get to see his past and I find myself to realize empathize with him. That's a terrible way to lose someone. As we move on through the story we get to see his 'maniacal' charisma, as well as his sadness. A part that got to me was when he held Elizabeth up in Jokbal's dungeon by the collar but there was no strength in his arms. He doesn't want to hurt people. He just wants to play but due to his play style and accompanying madness he ends up having the world turn on his back. I seriously hope he gets better, and the author has done a great job so far!

[collapse]

That's all I have to say for this novel, so go read it a try if you're interested in any of these topics I've written about.

I thinks its pretty annoying how everyone is giving the novel a low rating just because they are frustrated with the MC's characteristics. I wholeheartedly recommend everybody to continue reading past chapter 300, because the MC has matured a lot. Those who are writing negative reviews, bashing MC characteristics should stop since they the barely read anything.

I think most reviews are just unfair. They want a novel just like LMS and they are not getting it so they are unhappy.

Let's talk about the MC. People says he is the worst and they are about right at first. At the start of the story the MC is a loser. He isn't talented in sport and is slow to learn. He was bullied in school and doesn't have friends. He works in construction because he can't do anything else. He dreams of earning money by playing the new... more>> VRMMORPG Satisfy and borrows money to buy the capsule to play the game. Unfortunately he sucks at it and he is still low level after a whole year of playing. So he is in debt.

Then he gets his lucky break and receives a legendary class. In other novels he would become amazing right away. It's the story of the tr*sh who suddenly becomes a genius. It's just unrealistic.

Here the MC is still awful in the game after his lucky break. He doesn't know how to be efficient and makes mistakes. He is also still selfish because he never had friends, but who isn't selfish in life and more so in video games?

However this novel is about the journey of the MC. Little by little he will change. He will make friends and be good to them. He will learn to be a very good gamer in terms of ability and not just items. But this takes time because this novel is realistic. The MC can't overcome all his shortcomings in the blink of an eye and he will never be perfect, but who is?

This is what makes this novel good and unique, the MC isn't perfect but he gets better thanks to his life in the game.

Also, the side characters matter. Unlike LMS where they are mere decoration, the MC's friends really help him. They form deep bonds and rely on each other. It's not a succession of solo plays. He wouldn't have gone far without them.

It's really a good novel about VRMMORPG and it's way more realistic than other ones like it in which the MC is always amazing. <<less

A really enjoyable read. The translator clearly was right when they said or begged to wait for the character growth and stick with it for more than 90 chapters, I would recommend 100 chapters. The character growth is something that does not stop, even now he is not all knowing or OP. Yes he is OP in the eyes of the world but if you have stuck with the MC for a long time you will know he is not that OP, many can beat him and he still struggles,... more>> he still overcomes hardships, he still grows as a person. There are many great reasons to stick with this one for a long time, the game makes him grow as a person, and the game is nearing an expansion so how can anyone say he is OP when the game is yet show it's fangs on all the players.

A simple reason to stick with this and not give a 3, 2 or 1 star review would be - A very recent arc just ended and I can say this for people hating the character at the start and writing reviews. That same person you hated is not that OP or Worst in character now because if he was the same he would have lost it all a long time ago and would not survive in this world of his even with his so called OPness.

His strength isn't his Legendary class it's his power of growth and his strength to attract the world to him.

At first I really didnt like this novel, I had a hard time reading it until around chapter ~250-300 but then after this moment I've just been binge-reading it. Grid (mc) at first was a scum and I really dont like this kind of character (and that's why I dont like wuxia) but he really gets better over time. In the end, I dont regret reading the novel even if I didnt like it at first because it just gets good after and worth reading. I would recommend it to... more>> anyone looking for a VR mmorpg novel. <<less

Don't get me wrong, it is good compared to the bad reviews, but it's by no means good by the normal standards. I get the feeling the author is too young and he made the worst mistake possible since the beginning. He tried to portray the adult gaming world in a high school type of setting. The unpopular kid suddenly becoming popular, the weird but talented, the twin beauties of the school, the high amount of coincidences and so on. I guess it's hard to pinpoint but I believe everyone... more>> who read the story felt something off. And that thing is the world. The entire world of gaming has only one color, the korean one. No matter how much the author is struggling to make us see the immensity of his world you still feel like you are in a eternal deja vu.

Then comes the next problem. Oh grid, oh grid, a so called prodigy capable of surpassing everyone had one offset after another just because of his s*upidity. And yeah, the protagonist gets better, but in very weird and forced manner. Weird as he is portrayed as another version of Kirito (Sword Art Online's protagonist) while having the greed of weed. And forced as the women that should be untouchable flowers start acting more and more foolish. From proud and confident, to meek and wary of potential love enemies.

Lastly, the author has started the spiral. The proud characters are completely crushed, the so called rankings are changed faster than you could understand the f*cking reason. Some characters that were powerhouses are forgotten and others appear from hell knows where.

My personal problem comes from one thing
Spoiler

he can't f*ck that NPC Irene more because thats what the game decided

.

Well, that's it, a story worth 2 cents so 2 stars from me. Maybe you feel I'm wrong, maybe not. Read it, and try not to look at it's only good side, the wish fulfillment but also at the so called world and characters that have a lot of diversity. <<less
