Pretty much a classic Mao Ni novel. There is plenty of mystery and extremely diverse characters. Has great actions scenes but some slice of life aspects too. WARNING is that these novels aren't for everybody since they are slow and it takes the whole book to be fulfilled but you need to take your time reading these (like 25 chapters or something at once). Story recently has took a weird turn but I am still enjoying it.

He's way to irresponsible. Way too lazy and mediocre when it comes to ambitions. First 2 chapters way too confusing if not for someone explaining the plot through spoiler, I would have dropped it. (I exactly did on the second chapter but I give it another try since I'm bored and want to read more xianxia novels)

I don't have a problem with slower novels like this one, but I think Mao Ni is overrated. In his novel the world is shrouded in mystery remarkably well, but when people only read this type only in novels by Mao Ni they get so mesmerized by trying to unravel the secrets that they can't see the true depth of the plot and characters. In Mao Ni novels, the decorations are better than the essence and mystery shrouds mediocrity.

The forced plot is still there and when seen, it shatters... more>> any hope about this novel
Spoiler

When MC goes to the icy plains after competition with all other prodigies, the mother monster, which is the most powerful in the whole world even more than the MC in his previous life starts giving birth. Its screams warn all prodigies that the area got super dangerous, so they start running having been warned beforehand by the MC. But the author wants by all means for the MC to be stuck in a cave with a girl for 2-odd years. So how does he justify it? MC: We can't move from here. The monster is anxious when she gives birth and will kill us if we make any move. We have to wait until she/it finishes and then she won't attack us, 'cause we're ants in its eyes. Lamest excuse ever.

While stuck there most people think he died and all the people he helped previously want to take revenge no matter the consequences in a forced righteous way. Just so that the author can flex indirectly what a cool above-mortal-mentality squad the MC had formed without even willing to do so. This is one example of how Mao Ni forces the situations to fit his desired lofty ideals. Some of the time it works, but mostly it is not natural.

It started off okay, but gets progressively worse as the story goes on. The lazy main character I actually liked, but he's hardly in the story later on. The main problem I have with this is the setting. It's in a cultivation world, but without any of the usual trappings. There are no secret realms to explore. No cultivation resources to fight for. No sect strength rankings to improve on, and in the 300 chapters I've read there was only a single fight that was somewhat satisfying.

It's a cultivation novel... more>> stripped of all the interesting bits you find in this genre. In the end, all that stuff is replaced by a lazy pace and LOTS of talking and scheming. From a huge cast of characters you're not going to remember outside of a selected handful of main ones. It's also missing any sort interesting antagonist, or situation to resolve so all those endless words end up feeling pointless.

I liked Way of Choices... didn't like this. <<less

Read it or hate it, your own choice. This is Mao Ni's novel. So full of convulted plots and philosophies about Xianxia.

The first part is Xianxia. But unlike other novel, the plot is not power up, change stage, more power up, loop. It's about conflicts of thoughts, ideas, goals, paths toward heaven, between brothers, sects, and the whole cultivating circle. So readers who love reading straightforward kill-fight-powerup will be confused by this world.

The second part is the life in heaven after the MC ascention. BUT be warned ! Xiaxia lovers... more>> will be confused and give **** evaluation to the 1/2 half of this 2nd part. Some may throw this novel to tr*shbin after 10 chapters ! It is NOT heaven or higher realm as in ALL other novels.

The MC in this novel is very inert up to pathetic level. There's not much screen time in MC. In fact, most time, the MC p, ays the supporting role !

So for most readers, in the 2nd part, pathetic MC + Mao Ni's slow pace & convulated style = novel drop!

That's why this novel gets a lot of bad reviews. I give it 3/5 too because of very poor & forcedown scientific background of the 2nd part. Mao Ni should stay away from this kind ot novel. It's almost on Chuunipiao-level SF novel. The final is also force-down-your-throat philosophy. <<less

I would say this is actually one of the slowest paced novel by Mao Ni with too many side characters that steals the limelight from the main characters. It took months for me to finish the translation to 840, and still waiting for the rest of the chapters to come.

anyway, the MC is basically a reincarnated man who reside in the body of a sword. The plot is really complicated and winding, but very much interesting. I loved the second part after MC ascended. Mao Ni’s creativity is surreal and... more>> definitely out of the box, almost the same as Joy of Life. A mix of xianxia and sci fi, which is very much my cup of tea.

there’s no love interest between the MC with any other female characters, because he is just unable to express love. I think the most sincere feeling he had was probably towards Lian Sanyue, too bad they couldnt be together due to Sanyue being too attached to the world. Of well, I think she didnt miss anything though, Jing Jiu would a super boring husband anyway.

all in all, I love this novel. Although it is extremely slow paced, mao ni was able to keep readers getting intrigued with the conflicts and mysterious plots. Well done indeed! <<less

The rating was not bad so wanted to try this novel out. I just couldn't take the super slow pace, along with staying in the dark to many things. Yeah a little mystery here and there wouldn't be bad but when you read a 100 chapter and you don't understand many basic things about the novel makes you feel like an idiot.

Let me just start in here saying I love Mao Ni's work Way of choices has to go on anyone's top ten CN novels it's just a must yet contrary to that this story was a disappointment in his earlier work Evernight he compares the dao to the semblance of a naked woman in a classy/crass manner let me just be completely crass in my evaluation of this story this is like the best-anticipated story that you waited with bated breath for. Found and could barely contain excitement on as... more>> the material is consumed it evokes a "Yes!" type of response to the point where you feel all the right notes are hit all the right itches scratched as it progresses you stumble across a few "Huh?" moments but can press on until eventually they "Huh?" outweigh's the "Yes!" and you just find yourself confused to the end where you can find yourself flipping the table by doing the mental equivalent of rocket science when all you wanted to do was just read an action story. <<less

I loved this novel mainly because of the characters. Main lead is like (MC from Hyouka) best at analyzing/deduction while antagonist is like Li Qiye, best at manipulation. They can both plan ahead (even the accidents that will happen), not just making goals but like almost seeing the future.

if you saw the first 10 chapters, he told his servant what if someone can see 1000 years into the future

In the past, I though that Mao Ni novel's were simple: you love or you hate it. But with this novel I see that I was wrong.

If you don't know about Mao Ni, I will explain... He creates a world and we see everything with this world: every expert and scenary. All his novels are slow and every novel will explain all things with many details that you think he wants to use the max words possible to describe whatever he wants. (ZTJ)

This novel is not different, but the... more>> problem is that Mao Ni made this novel with the laziest MC ever. This might be cool, but It's not. Everything in the novel will be noted by others because MC is too lazy to explain. Schemes and fights are too tired things for MC, he will only act If he wants and is extremaly necessary, If not, he's going to make a scheme to others guys fight for him (but don't forget that he's too lazy for doing schemes, so imagine how hard is to this happen)

If you want to read, be prepared to see a novel without a MC present. You will see something like 10 chapters without talking about the MC, and I think that he fought something like 3 fights in 270 chapters, and they were very sh*t fights.

Oh, Mao Ni's novel always s*cks at cultivation realms, so, be prepared to suffer. <<less

It a different type of novel but it get annoying later as MC is very handsome and intelligent despite being lazy. All his disciples are very loyal and very powerful. Like a CEO, he just give command and others have to find a way to do it as he is just lazy to care.

  1. Even if he is down or something, it just a temporary set back and nothing changes. His disciples and followers will fix it for him

Mediocre.

Overly mystified cliche plot, with a snail speed of progression. The sweet parts are the characters are more defined than other fast food CN's, though keep in mind in context with CN webnovels and not actual novels.

world building is standard and it somewhat blends with the Chinese poetic style of description. It really needs one to be norm with Chinese idioms&nuances, if not it becomes plain idiotic at times.

... more>> And the translation is fine, just sometimes I guess the translator gets hungry and dyslexic and jumbles and eats up words.

And so far the plot seems to be
Spoiler

the MC is the reincarnation of an expert who was schemed and killed while ascending, he is now trying to reach back to the top while investigating his enemies, and living his life fully rather than being a hermit like last life.
